TOURS AROUND TOWN BY LIESL MERKEL
The weather in Atlanta is perfect for outdoor exploration and what better way to see the city than on a tour? These tour groups will present the most enjoyable spin around Atlanta whether you go by bicycle, electric car, Segway or on foot. You’ll learn little-known facts about Atlanta’s street art, culinary secrets or even the latest news from Atlanta’s film scene. When you’re finished with your tour, you’ll know all the best insider secrets of our great city.
UNEXPECTED ATLANTA TOURS Akila McConnell
Founder and Owner Unexpected Atlanta Tours include Atlanta Food Walks and Atlanta History Tours. You’ll enjoy a guided tour by storytellers who are experts in the culinary scene and Atlanta’s history.
Where is one of the most popular spots on your tour? On our Grant Park Food Walk, people love eating at Six Feet Under. The grits are

out of this world and convert grits haters. Plus, the patio gives an incredible view of downtown Atlanta and Oakland Cemetery.
What is the best tour for families? Our best tour for families is our King Historic District Tour, which focuses on the story of how Atlanta changed the world with a focus on the civil rights movement. And, it showcases hidden treasures in the city that even locals don’t know, like Dr. King’s elementary school and his office. How have your offerings changed due to COVID-19? We have limited group size to eight people, require masks for all attendees and guides, encourage social distancing, require signed waivers from guests agreeing to wear masks, our guides do daily temperature checks and/or are fully vaccinated. MORE TOURS! The Unexpected Virtual Tours let you explore Atlanta from the comfort of your home with very interactive virtual experiences that include local treats and hands-on
activities shipped directly to you. www.unexpectedatlanta.com
ATL-CRUZERS Stephen Chester
Owner Guided tours of Atlanta are offered by ATL-Cruzers via unique modes of transportation: by electric car or Segway.
Where is one of the most popular spots on your tour? The historic homes of Inman Park are a big hit. Many people don’t expect Atlanta to have that old architecture. Just as impressive are the buildings and history of Sweet Auburn Avenue. What is the best tour for couples, families or simply the most unique? The historic Eastside Segway Tour truly is the best for all categories. However, my favorite is the 90-minute car tour because it covers so much and we have access to talk to the guests for a straight 90 minutes. Not too many tours in general allow that type of connection with the guest and guide.
BICYCLE TOURS OF ATLANTA
Bicycle Tours of Atlanta at Historic Oakland Cemetery
How have your offerings changed due to COVID-19? We have not had to change anything other than group size. Segways are naturally socially distanced and the cars have removable sides that allow for airflow.
Ebenezer Baptist Church
What is the best tour for couples or families, or simply the most unique? The Upside Down Stranger Things Tour. This tour takes guests to locations such as the homes of the Wheelers, Sinclairs and Hendersons; the studios where “Stranger Things” is filmed, the Hawkins Public Pool, Brimborn Steelworks and Hawkins Middle and High schools.
MORE TOURS! Other ATL-Cruzers tours include the Atlanta Midtown Segway Tour where guests glide through Midtown, the heart of the arts in Atlanta, and explore the Midtown Business District, beautiful homes of Ansley Park and Atlanta Botanical Garden. www.atlcruzers.com
How have your offerings changed due to COVID-19? We offer small private tours, so things didn’t change too much. Masks are worn on the tours.
BICYCLE TOURS OF ATLANTA Robyn Elliott
Chief Happiness Officer Take a spin on a bicycle while discovering the history, art and culture of Atlanta’s coolest off-the-beaten-path gems of the city.
Where is one of the most popular spots on your tour? The murals from The Forward Warrior are one of the most powerful, colorful and surprising stops on our tour. What is the best tour for couples or families, or simply the most unique? Our Fall In Love with Atlanta tour is a great overview that showcases beautiful neighborhoods, art, culture and history. It is definitely our most popular. How have your offerings changed due to COVID-19? All bikes are sanitized before every tour

DTOURS Dan Tanner
Owner DTours operates tours that are private for each party. From an overview of Atlanta to stops at popular film sites, there is a tour for everyone’s taste.
Where is one of the most popular spots on your tour?
MORE TOURS! DTours offers Hollywood of the South: Atlanta Film Locations; Atlanta Nature; Historic Atlanta Homes; Champions, Legends and Olympians; Where the Walking Dead Lives; Gone With the Wind; Atlanta Architecture; Atlanta’s Art on the Streets; Atlanta Highlights; or even Plan Your Own Adventure. As a bonus, tours can also be given in Spanish. www.dtour.me
ATLANTA PRESERVATION CENTER The Atlanta Preservation Center (APC) will roll out new tours and offerings this summer. Bird watching tours begin at the Grant Mansion, APC’s headquarters. In partnership with Georgia Audubon, the tour will wind through Grant Park and other historic neighborhoods and parks. APC will also collaborate with the Braden Fellman Group, which has helped shape Atlanta by working with architecturally unique and historically significant mixed-use properties. The group develops, restores and repositions these properties. Regular tours of the Abbey at Westview Cemetery will soon start as well. The Abbey is a fascinating space with lots of history. Film crews have been known to use it as a film site, including serving as Navarro’s house in Mexico for the Netflix series “Ozark”. Please check the website for more information and to schedule a tour. www.preserveatlanta.com SUMMER 2021

A family-friendly museum devoted to trains, big and small
Atlanta plays a huge part in the state’s film production industry, from “Captain America: Civil War” transforming downtown Atlanta’s The Gulch into a Nigerian market to High Museum of Art and Atlanta City Hall serving as backdrops for “Black Panther.” WHAT ARE THOSE YELLOW SIGNS FOR? You might notice a bunch of yellow signs with random black letters. They signal an active film production, and the letters are code for the show or movie being filmed. Locals know that a quick online search usually brings up the name of the movie. FILMING RIGHT NOW: At press time, Atlanta had almost 50 active productions including “She-Hulk,” “Raising Dion,” “Stargirl,” “Stranger Things,” “Doom Patrol” and “Black Adam.” Check out the current list of shows prepping or filming in Atlanta at www.georgia.org

Summertime in Atlanta means temperatures in the high 80s and sports are in full swing. There are exciting sporting events to keep you busy all summer long. Here’s what’s going on that you won’t want to miss. BY CASSIDY ALLEN CHUBB
Atlanta United FC
The 2018 MLS champions are in the middle of their fifth season with an exciting batch of home games including a July 24 match-up against the reigning 2020 MLS champs, Columbus Crew FC. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or
visiting for the first time, MercedesBenz Stadium offers an unforgettable experience. Enjoy watching talented stars like Josef Martinez and Miles Robinson compete on the field while indulging in a fan-friendly priced hot dog for just $1. If you can’t make it in person, United frequently hosts outdoor viewing parties throughout the city. www.atlutd.com
Peachtree Road Race
The Peachtree Road Race returns for the 52nd edition spanning two days (July 3-4) after being canceled last year due to COVID-19. In years past, the race was known as “the world’s largest 10K” but this year the main focus is to be the world’s safest 10K. Participants have the option to compete in person at the usual starting spot (Lenox Square) or virtually. Safety measures worth noting are smaller start waves and more times, which will have half the participants than in a typical year. If you’re not participating in the race, there are plenty of volunteer
opportunities including four days at the expo and two event days to choose. www.atlantatrackclub.org/Peachtree
Atlanta Rugby
The RATLERS’ season continues through July 18 with two home games (June 19 and June 26) at Life University’s Lupo Family Field. Game days give fans the chance to win free bites and sips from local sponsors like Chattahoochee Coffee Company, Academic Pizza and Fox Dogs. Take a short drive from downtown Atlanta to catch some Southeast rugby in action and for away games, attend watch parties at Reformation Brewery where you can taste Rugby ATL’s own Sin Bin Brew. www.rugbyatl.rugby
