A classic midcentury residence receives a faithful renovation complete with today’s conveniences Written by Kate Abney

This Buckhead gem was the work of noted midcentury architect Andrew Steiner, and it remained unspoiled by renovations in the decades before it was acquired by this creative family of five. Architect Frank Neely took great pains with its redesign, improving flow and functionality while carefully preserving Steiner’s masterful precedent. That included revamping the dated kitchen and public spaces at the heart of the home, an area he transformed by eliminating walls to create an open cooking and entertaining space. Along the perimeter, an expanse of cabinetry is topped by sliding stained-oak windows that overlook a lush front yard; a deceptively simple vent hood all but disappears against the picturesque views. Here, Neely also installed a four-inch step to set off the custom Lacanche range and coordinate with a Caesarstone island of the same width. Tailor-made with a waterfall edge, it takes on the appearance of a Parsons table floating mid-room. In the ceiling above, Neely’s telltale shadow lines are placed on the same axis as the appliance-concealing cabinetry, helping to delineate the adjoining rooms while maintaining visual flow—an effect that milk-washed oak floors selected by interior designer Amy D. Morris enhance beautifully. “We originally wanted light cabinets and dark floors but Amy inverted it, and I think it was a brilliant call,” says Neely. Beyond Morris’s choices for colors, textures and furnishings, her pick for pendants really made the space, explains Neely. “Even with all we did in this kitchen, when you walk in the room and see those light fi xtures, they absolutely knock it out of the park,” he says. “In a contemporary kitchen, God is in the details. And here, every detail counts.”

Q1: How is kitchen design evolving in the Atlanta marketplace? Do you see the same overarching design trends that are happening in kitchens today, i.e. Transitional Design and Living Kitchen Design influencing Atlanta homes? In Atlanta, and around the world, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s for so much more than just cooking. People do homework, work, convene, entertain and more in kitchens, so they have to provide many functions. Poggenpohl addresses this need very well by considering the kitchen part of the living area of the home. Because people are spending so much time living in their kitchens, the trend in design has also moved toward more contemporary or transitional style even in homes that are traditional. People are looking for fewer flourishes in their kitchens and more organization and efficiency. Our lives can be almost chaotic, and we need spaces that help us organize and conceal. Poggenpohl kitchens are literally engineered to function well and help homeowners cut down on clutter and with classically modern lines will also stay fresh for decades. I always say that if your kitchen and master bedroom are organized, your life probably is too. Q2: What is your personal definition of luxury? Luxury is found in something that is aesthetically pleasing, that makes me feel good or that has an agreeable tactile quality. With references to late-Victorian stylings, this tailored kitchen combines varied architectural inﬂuences for a room that’s both sophisticated and restrained Written by Kate Abney

This newly constructed home for a family of five in Brookhaven was designed by Frank G. Neely Design Associates to have the historic hallmarks of early 19th-century architecture—but with a fully equipped kitchen that blew turn-of-the-century precedents out of the water. Its layout is ideal for a wide range of activities, whether the kids are grabbing a juice box or completing schoolwork at the countertop, someone is preparing dinner or the entire family is turning it over to a caterer for at-home entertaining. A built-in fi replace is raised to direct heat to the island and barstools so that the owners can sip their morning coffee while enjoying a warm fi re. The color of its granite hearth picks up the gray veining of the chic Carrara marble spanning the perimeter countertops, while painted wood throughout the room establishes a monochromatic effect. That same wood was applied to the backsplash of the charming LaCornue CornuFe 110 range, located beneath a meticulously crafted vent hood complete with custom spice racks. Above, the intricate structure of the ceiling includes rustic wood beams made of wormy chestnut that create striking architectural shadow lines. Noticeably, cabinetry was installed on a lower scale line for a look that’s a little cozier and less grand. “I’m still a huge fan of taking the cabinets to the ceiling, but in this kitchen that shadow space softens the room,” Neely explains. “The cabinet doors and drawers are also not ornate. A very simple, almost Quaker-style panel keeps the look understated.” Wide-plank, quarter-sawn oak floors and chained-and-weighted windows with laminated glass add timeless character to the room, while herringbone wood island countertops and custom pendants selected by interior designer Wendy Meredith lend a softly tailored fi nish to the classic kitchen.

A streamlined kitchen for an established businessman ﬁnds harmony in sleek surfaces, warm textures and convivial features Written by Kate Abney

Located in a traditional Buckhead neighborhood, this kitchen represents a solid collaboration between D. Stanley Dixon Architect and Design Galleria Kitchen & Bath Studio. During measures to refresh a 1926 house with contemporary updates, Dixon combined three existing rooms to create a sound architectural shell for the kitchen that was bound by an expansive grid of steel windows looking out onto the backyard. The homeowner, a retired family man, had waited 20 years to remodel, and desired a “more open flow for entertaining and a modern space that was flooded with light,” says Design Galleria’s Mary Kathryn Timoney, who served as principal designer on the project. Taking her lead, Design Galleria fabricated an immaculately proportioned bank of seamless, exotic-looking Manzana cabinetry on the walls opposite the windows, where integrated, top-of-the-line appliances flank a pass-through to the home’s private quarters. On a hallway leading to the deck, a shallow stretch of touch-latch pantry cabinets stows the gentleman’s entertaining essentials. One of this room’s shining features is its unique countertop design: An astutely engineered, cantilevered stainless steel peninsula hovers above a Calacatta marble-topped storage island on casters, which can be rolled under the cantilevered counter to free up space or relegated to an opposite wall as a makeshift bar. The clean, linear effect of the room is tempered by the curving, cylindrical shapes of the Futuro vent hood and slim stainless steel pendants. Warm woods and cognac leather stools ramp up the room’s masculine yet balanced aesthetic, while—like a favorite pair of cuffl inks—a perfectly scaled Danze faucet serves as the room’s fi nal shining statement piece.

For an accomplished international businessman making his own domain out of a Buckhead estate, the team at Poggenpohl completely overhauled a formerly out-of-date, cramped kitchen replete with unsightly details. The renovated results could not be more different. “He was one of those dream clients,” says designer John Coulter. “He just gave us an idea of what colors and appliances he wanted and said, ‘Now you do the rest.’ ” With the homeowner’s only directive being a dark, streamlined look, Coulter created a moody, masculine scheme using pro stainless steel appliances and dark-toned matte “Titan Gray” cabinetry with an aluminum edge. It integrates such features as a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer combo, pull-out pantry and Miele dishwasher. The hardware boasts slim lines, inset brushed aluminum and, for a bit of contrast, the upper cabinetry is composed of etched mirrored glass with soft-close engineering. It’s the perfect complement to perhaps the most impressive range on the market—Wolf. The island includes full-depth hidden cabinetry concealed behind touch-latch doors, providing ample storage without crowding the homeowner’s favorite spot for morning coffee. The home’s interior designer, Shawn Alshut of Studio A2, chose the contemporary wallcoverings and rich black ﬂoors, which lend a decidedly handsome effect to the hard-lined room while also blending seamlessly with the surrounding interiors—which are enclosed in a traditional facade that conforms to the neighborhood standard. “This kitchen is an example of Poggenpohl doing more and more work with our product in traditional homes,” says architectural sales manager Alison Weidner. “Modern kitchens are becoming much more common. They are a great way to maintain the exterior of a house in a very traditional Atlanta, while still perking up the inside.”

What’s trending now in kitchen design? Interior designers, architects and kitchen designers share tips for homeowners embarking on renovations in 2014.

THE SHEER NUMBER OF POSSIBILITIES might seem overwhelming to a homeowner looking to redesign the kitchen, and delving into the details can prove challenging for even the most opinionated homeowners. So, where to begin? Hire an architect, says interior designer Carter Kay. “Very small changes, which an architect or a kitchen designer can point out, can make all the difference in the world.” Beyond securing the right team, consider not just form and function, but also personality. “My clients want fresh, clean kitchens that have soul and style but with all of the new bells and whistles,” says Bill Litchﬁeld of William B. Litchﬁeld Residential Designs. “There is nothing worse than walking into a good period house that has a factory-built kitchen with no personality.”

FURNITURELIKE FEEL “Find a great refrigerator, such as a full overlay Sub-Zero that looks like a killer piece of furniture or an old pantry cabinet or a glass-front refrigerator,” Litchﬁeld says.

OPEN IT UP “Open shelves add to the streamlined look because they demand a certain amount of organization,” says Kay.

KEEP IT COMPACT “Increasing the size of the mudroom or pantry allows the primary kitchen to be a little smaller so you don’t feel like you get lost in it,” says Warner Warner McConaughey, founder and owner of HammerSmith. “Make the kitchen a sophisticated, integrated part of the house.”

Naomi von Habersham AM I THE ONLY ONE who thinks that New Year’s resolutions are doomed to failure? I have yet to read Proust (a resolution from 1990), learn to cook Thai food (2002), take Zumba classes (2011) or marry a British aristocrat (my resolution from back in 1967!). I’m getting mighty depressed thinking about my inability to succeed at my resolutions (especially the one about the British aristocrat), so rather than make yet another list of goals that may never get accomplished, I have decided to try something new— and a little more positive—this year. In lieu of New Year’s resolutions, I have devised a short list of things for which I am grateful. First, I am thankful to live in a city that takes its decorating very seriously. Atlanta has ADAC, AmericasMart, topnotch interior designers and great shopping. In fact, I would argue that Atlanta is one of the top-tier design cities in the country. Wouldn’t you agree? However, I sure wish that someone would open a bookstore in the spirit of the old Oxford Books. I used to spend hours there looking at design books and magazines. Something else for which I am grateful is the purchase of and subsequent move of the Randolph-Lucas house, which was saved from the wrecking ball late last year by two Good Samaritans. Formerly located on Peachtree Road but now ﬁ rmly ensconced in the city’s Ansley Park neighborhood, the house has a secure future ahead of it. I only wish that other historic houses would receive the same treatment. I guess I’ll just never understand why people feel the need to erase our city’s past. And ﬁ nally, I thank the heavens above that Atlanta still retains some of its Southern charm. Strangers greeting each other with a friendly “hello,” respect for our elders, handwritten letters, fried chicken, collard greens, pimento cheese, the importance of home, storytelling, family traditions, a well-set table and grace under pressure are, more or less, alive and well here. Time may march on, but at least we haven’t completely lost our Southern sensibilities.

and affection for stylish drama in mind, Atlanta interior designer Courtney Giles was otherwise given carte blanche to transform a lovingly preserved 1911 home from classic to current for its young owners. Having upsized from a tiny bungalow to a four-bedroom house in Atlanta’s historic Ansley Park, the homeowners, together with Giles, approached the design process room by room, which allowed each space to inform the next. “All of the public spaces on the first f loor share the same colors and feel,” says Giles, who pulled out her swatch book of grays, metallics and signature shine for the project. “She wanted the dining room to look like the face of a ladies watch,” says Giles of her jewel-inspired mission. “I gave her metal tones, silver and gold, mother of pearl, diamonds and all.” The first room Giles tackled was the dining room; she then built off of that room’s glimmering tones and level of formality in the study and living room, by taking its silver tones darker. The gray office, which moonlights as an entertaining hub, boasts a bit of an edge thanks to pops of yellow, Greek key-patterned valances and a cream-painted fireplace. Chinoiserie-style wallpaper envelops the pewter-filled living room, and was designed with the couple’s company in mind. “They weren’t worried about big, heav y upholstered furniture, but more of a pretty space in which to have cocktails and easy f low,” says Giles, who remedied the room’s tight layout with a multiseat furniture arrangement. “The drop-arm chaise is my favorite piece in the house,” she says. “It’s covered in mohair, which I thought was a little daring.” The local designer has a fondness for including unexpected twists in the rooms she creates, like the lustrous

silver, red and black f loral wallpaper she hung in the powder room. “It’s kind of dramatic in that small space, but it echoes the shine connection,” says Giles. Whimsical polka-dots on the upholstered banquettes presiding in the spacious foyer create a grand entrance and reaffirm pattern as one of the home’s leading design elements. Adept at symmetry, Giles counteracts each dramatic moment with a serene one. In the master suite, for instance, the homeowner requested an aqua-and-cream palette—cool tones that helped the small room live larger. Attached to a generous sun porch, the bedroom was kept minimal. “We installed a built-in window seat, small yet functional nightstands and an upholstered queen-size headboard,” says Giles, who completed the look with gilded accents. The neutral palette continues into the master bath and his-and-her closets, an expansion created by tearing out a spare bedroom. In the lavish bath, selections such as mother of pearl tile and a sparkling chandelier provided inspiration for a showstopping centerpiece: a nickel tub. The overall effect recalls a stylish bracelet to layer with that ladies watch of a dining room. The heart of the historic house, of course, is the family room and kitchen, which combine the couple’s passion for color and art. The window-wrapped family room, overlooking the leafy backyard, is an airy space grounded by warm orange and brown hues. “The couple already owned a big horse painting—one of them is from Kentucky— which we displayed on an easel, so that’s where the pops of orange came from,” says Giles of the bright hue that adds a youthful vibe to the space. Elsewhere, eye-catching contemporary art helps establish a fine balance between traditional and modern interiors. “The house is pretty classic with a twist…and not stuffy at all,” she says.

Food is a familiar topic of conversation among friends Father Austin Ford and Marie Nygren. They recently gathered in Nygren’s Serenbe home to cook Ford’s legendary gumbo recipe for her family. Some of the day’s ingredients, such as okra, red peppers and parsley, were plucked fresh from Serenbe’s 25-acre organic farm.

simmering on the stove. “Yes, really get it going,” replies Father Austin Ford. The duo is preparing Ford’s hearty seafood gumbo recipe for an evening dinner with “my five most favorite people in the world,” says Nygren. Today’s intimate guest list is reserved for her husband, Steve, daughters Garnie, Kara and Quinn and longtime friend Ford. Nygren fi rst met Ford as a volunteer at his afternoon summer program at Emmaus House, a community center in South Atlanta that he founded in 1967. From its humble beginnings, Emmaus House eventually grew to be an essential support structure for the community, yet this endeavor hardly sums up Ford’s legacy. Almost 30 years later, the pair is still discussing food. While Nygren slices fresh okra on the chopping board, Ford recounts his recipe for scrambled eggs with vinegar, a dish the Serenbe chef has yet to successfully replicate. So when Ford asks her secret to making the perfect corn bread, Nygren giddily responds that she can fi nally teach him something. The little victory is short-lived, though, as Ford promptly reminds her to check on the roux and quips that it hasn’t been tended to. Ford is always one to keep Nygren on her toes; the special dynamic between the longtime friends is a balance of great respect and witty banter. Nygren values Ford’s guidance so much, in fact, that in 2009, she turned to him for advice when the future of The Farmhouse at Serenbe was in question after its fourth chef in three years departed. Like many times before—and still a routine ritual—she and Ford sat on the porch of his Grant Park home with a glass of bourbon for him and wine for her. Within several hours, the pair fi nalized five recipes to reopen the eatery with Nygren at the kitchen’s helm. Today, she’s still top toque at the restaurant, and Ford’s shrimp and grits recipe remains a guest favorite.

Whether cooking for a restaurant dining room full of patrons or just a special few, Nygren’s appreciation for the process is palpable. “For me, cooking is a very sensual experience in that you rely on all fi ve senses,” she explains. “You’re touching the ingredients, and then—whether it’s onions sizzling or a stew bubbling on the stove—you can taste, hear, smell and certainly look at it. Cooking is one of the few experiences where all fi ve senses are essential.” Ford’s take on cooking is somewhat less poetic. “I don’t love to cook. I love to eat, therefore I have to cook,” he says with a sly smile. But his knack for creating divine dishes is apparent as Nygren’s fi nal stir of the seafood gumbo fi lls the kitchen with appetizing aromas. “His food is exquisitely delicious and this recipe for gumbo is the best I’ve ever tasted,” she proudly boasts of her friend. While Nygren sets the table with bowls of tonight’s feast in her charming backyard, she’s overcome with emotion as her “favorite five” take their seats. “Cooking is such a great gift of one’s spirit,” she says with sincerity. “It’s an act of nurturing others both physically and emotionally. But most importantly, for me, it’s an act of love every time I can bring people together over a shared meal.” 69

started renovating kitchens right out of college, so forgive me if I feel like by now I should have a Master’s degree in kitchen design. It all started with my house on Stephen Long Drive—and thinking way back then that a quick renovation might just get me the seed money I needed for my handbag business. My fi rst project, I made every mistake in the book. I went through contractors like I was downing burgers at The Varsity. Now, this was before Angie’s List, so it was defi nitely hit-or-miss (or miss, miss and miss in my case.) My contractors had a litany of excuses. Their dog died, their mother died. They were in a psych ward, or rehab. By the time it was fi nished and listed for sale, I was exhausted. Thanks to its cool, sleek black cabinets and red sink, though, the house sold in less than a week. For full ask; cash. It was official. I’d caught the kitchen renovation bug. My next kitchen adventure (think impeccable molding, vintage knobs and a giant slab of Alabama white marble—and this was long before kitchens were cool!) would go on to be photographed by a glossy mag. Which brings me to one of my all-time favorite projects in which we scoured antiques stores for 18th-century farmhouse beams, reverse-painted

glass panels from a French boulangerie, onyx countertops and 17th-century Portuguese tile. That kitchen is magniﬁcent. It also cost about a halfa-million dollars. Recently, I underwent my own kitchen renovation, opting for a stunning, high-gloss red design sourced entirely from Ikea. Paired with chrome accents, it looks like a half-amillion bucks. Today, Atlantans are spoiled with an embarrassment of riches. Ann Sacks tile, Wolf ranges and Sub-Zero refrigerators with full-panel overlays— we can customize to our heart’s content at ADAC thanks to a myriad of resources, including heavy-weights like Design Galleria and Renaissance Tile and Bath. Even Home Depot and Lowe’s offer customizable cabinets, lovely sinks and accessories…promise. Yes, we’ve come a long way from the kitchens of our youth. Gone are the laminate surfaces, ersatz-brick linoleum tile and stainless-steel cooktops. Our kitchen may be small, but thanks to antique knobs, a Chinese deco rug, a giant Jamaican acrylic ﬂower painting, Momma’s sterling silver and Mottahedah china, it’s also chic, eclectic and irreverent. It’s us.
