Ahh, fall! It’s such a beautiful time in
Atlanta, but is usually jam-packed with so many things to do that the season is gone before you know it. Next up: Christmas! New Year’s! (Yes, I realize that I’m getting ahead of myself.) From football season to fashion shows, fall is peak season in Atlanta’s style and design circles. And speaking of jam-packed, this month’s issue is brimming with advice from some of the city’s leading tastemakers. They’ve opened their little black books to reveal their must-haves, mustsees and must-dos of the season (page 21). In our features section, designers John Oetgen and Betty Burgess take us on tours of recently completed projects (pages 48 and 62, respectively), while Bill Musso walks us through his personal garden (page 56), and William Peace and Malissa Ladd share special moments from their recent at-home nuptials (page 72). Exaggeration you say?

On October 1, the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) will open to consumers for the first time. Until now, only licensed design professionals have been able to access the 550,000-square-foot interior design center. With the goal of introducing more consumers to the benefits of working with professional interior designers, ADAC now allows anyone designing a new or existing space to visit the center and browse the 1,200 product lines represented in its showrooms. Resources will be available to guide visitors through the process of hiring and working with a designer, and will assist in finding the best designers for their projects. The on-site offices of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and International Interior Design Association (IIDA) will also be available to those seeking the expertise of a design professional. The opening date marks the beginning of two weeks of events created to educate consumers about the showrooms and its products, many of which are exclusive to the center. THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’! Here we are with fall upon us, and I’m in a quandary as to whether I should bring my coats and woolens out of storage. Do you remember the days when we experienced our first frost of the season by early October? Not anymore. Last fall and winter, I never wore my winter coat once! And those UGG boots that I bought a few years back to keep my tootsies warm are simply gathering dust in my closet. I do realize that women of a certain age ought not to wear UGGs, but I only wear them within a two-block radius of my home. Raking leaves, I fear, is becoming as rare as cool fall temperatures. I’m aware that this task requires more physical effort than taking a leaf blower to the front yard, but at least it’s not offensive to the eardrums. And will the people operating said leaf blowers ever learn to stop directing the dead leaves into the roadway and onto passing cars? It’s simply passing the buck, so to speak, making one person’s leaves another person’s problem. Inevitably, it happens to me when I’ve just had my car washed! Food is changing, too. Over the summer, I was shocked to learn that my local grocery store had stopped carrying pole beans. I was told that nobody bought them anymore. I’m assuming that the same goes for grits, too, as the store’s selection seems to be getting smaller by the day. In Atlanta, I’ll bet it’s easier to find kielbasa, clam chowder and other Northern delicacies than our traditional Southern staples. And don’t even get me started on network TV. I used to eagerly await the season premieres of Dallas, Dynasty, Designing Women, Hart to Hart and Remington Steele. Can someone please tell me why the major networks no longer air shows that are witty, glamorous and just plain fun? Why must we be subjected to those reality show wack jobs who love to cuss, slap and cry, all while butchering the English language? In the words of another TV blast from the past, fitness guru Susan Powter, “Stop the insanity!”

THE HIGHLANDS HOUSE owned by Claude and Ann Sullivan is, like the mountain it’s perched on, a picture of quiet beauty. It’s a beautiful balance of informal elegance, like stepping outside— a breath of fresh air. That’s due in large part to designer, and Highlands neighbor, John Oetgen, who helped the couple renovate their mountain retreat. And fi rst on the agenda was to reorient some spaces to take full advantage of the breathtaking views. The former kitchen, for instance, is now the dining room. “We opened it up because the main view was right there,” Oetgen says. “Originally, it had very few windows—just this funny corner window over the sink. We opened it up with all these doors out onto the terrace, so you can step right out onto the terrace with its beautiful views. And we didn’t add any fancy curtain treatments. I mean, this is a mountain house—the whole look was supposed to be very simple.” Simplicity is carried through the color palette, too. While many designers might have taken their color cues from the dining room’s stunning rug (one of many the owners have collected in their travels around the world), Oetgen found his inspiration in a more unexpected source: a pair of lamps with bases made of pipes from an old French organ. “They’re painted beautifully and their background

To take full advantage of the breathtaking views, designer John Oetgen extended the home’s covered porch with a half-round that can accommodate a table for 10. “The gardens all around the house are extraordinary,” says Oetgen, noting that Jeremy Smearman from Planters, Inc., was in charge of it all. “There’s every variety of conifer you can imagine.” The chaises are ideal for taking in the undulating countryside—there are mountains and valleys as far as the eye can see. opposite Because homeowner Ann Sullivan loves velvet, Oetgen used it generously throughout the house, including aqua and forest green interpretations in the living room’s main conversation area. preceding spread A mossy tree trunk in the garden echoes the home’s interior palette. color inspired the whole scheme,” Oetgen says. “And Ann adored the color—a smoky aquamarine.” While aquamarine is predominant in the dining room, it plays a supporting—but equally important—role in the living room. Here, it’s a refreshing accent to rich jewel tones, played out in lush velvets and leathers. Throughout the room, too, are unexpectedly elegant pieces, including a 19th-century chinoiserie table and a 1950s Venetian glass floor lamp in a green hue. “We even hung a globe in there, because they’re always going around the world,” Oetgen says. It may be the master bedroom, however, that’s most surprising in this mountain house. In a complete departure from the darkpaneled living room, this light-flooded space is wrapped with Palladian blue walls and decked out primarily in chartreuse paisley linen—the epitome of restful and relaxing. Meanwhile, that everperfect balance of casual and chic is achieved by adding an 18thcentury Gustavian table and a bedside chest of the same genre. But the true measure of success in this home’s redo lies in how Oetgen infused the owners’ travel collections, love of color and sense of style. “This couple has a vast personality,” the designer says. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR INSPIR ATION and, sometimes, you have to listen for it. As it turns out, Bill Musso and Bryan Cooke did both in creating a garden to complement their grand Italianstyle villa in Druid Hills. During the planning stages, says Cooke, “we went to the Carlos Museum to hear a lecture about ancient Roman architecture. [The lecturer] put up some slides and our fi rst thought was ‘wow, that so mimics our house—or our house mimics that!’ There were similar characteristics, such as the central axis from the front door to the back door all the way through the garden. And the main rooms having views into the garden; he talked a lot about how the garden was an extension of the house.” Before they could create the garden they envisioned, Musso and Cooke had to take it down to nearly its bare bones. In fact, their fi rst step was to call in a landscape demolitionist. But once that work was done, the homeowners immediately took steps to create a formal garden befitting their c. 1925 residence. There was, for instance, originally a curving sidewalk between the back door

Providing a focal point in the lower courtyard is a bronze fountain with a classical theme—an infant warding off a large bird—while a Crown of Thorns tucked into a niche affords an ever-blooming backdrop. The sago palm is winterized every year, and the TLC has paid off ; it’s now a towering version of the three-foot-high plant brought home eight years ago. Tieback curtains and a suspended decorative frame—all readily able to stand up to the elements—do their part to up the decorative ante. opposite “There used to be a bigger pool here,” Cooke explains. “Built in the ’70s, it was 20x40 feet and 13 feet deep.” And the old one held 54,000 gallons of water; this one holds 17,000. “It was a lot less money to fill it in, to build a new pool rather than repair the existing one,” adds Musso. “We found some tiles that were appropriate to the period of the house, creating a pool that felt like it would have been in style when the house was originally built in the 1920s.”

and the steps leading to the upper courtyard. “We thought it would be much nicer to get back to that straight axis from the front door to the back door, up through the arch that leads to the pool area,” Cooke explains. In the lower courtyard, boxwoods border individual areas. “The boxwood hedges have been somewhat of a challenge,” admits Musso. “We started out with dwarf English boxwoods, not realizing that they’re very prone to disease and drought. And, of course, the fi rst two years after they were planted were our worst two years in terms of drought. The originals only still exist in one spot; the rest have been replaced with Korean boxwoods, which grow faster and are much more drought- and heat-tolerant.” “We like the formality of the boxwoods; it’s kind of a framed-and-contained approach,” Cooke adds. “You can put almost anything inside the gardens as long as it’s nicely framed and contained. That’s the Bill part—the framed-and-contained. My approach is more ‘oh, let’s experiment and see what lives!’ ” Experiment or not, it’s laid out beautifully. The vistas from the main rooms of the house are dramatic, including lush ferns and boxwoods, Calla lilies and hydrangeas, soaring palms and crape myrtles, classic statuary and fountains—with creeping fig and clematis defi ning the courtyard walls. “The thing that gives me the greatest joy is Bryan’s pride in what he has created,” says Musso. “At the end of a stressful day of work, he walks around looking to see what is new, what needs help, or he takes time to admire a bloom or texture combination.” And there’s a lot to admire. he Tudor-style residence of Paul Raulet is a good fit with its Peachtree Battle neighborhood, known for its architecturally significant homes. The house has a quiet, unassuming quality, one that’s welcoming from the get-go. And that’s precisely what the owner was looking for—a comfortable home to share with his children, Charlie and Grace. Raulet knew that the property had a lot going for it but, before making the purchase, he consulted with Mike Hammersmith. Having worked with the builder/contractor previously, Raulet respected his opinion and needed to know if a few “tweaks” he had in mind were feasible. “He wanted a more useable backyard,” recalls Hammersmith, which was ultimately 65

Mike Hammersmith, Inc.’s custom cabinetry is showcased in the kitchen, but it’s the extra-thick Calcutta Gold marble countertops that—in this homeowner’s opinion—take this space to the next level. “This room would not have near the look if the countertops weren’t as thick as they are,” says Raulet. He points out that the La Cornue range was a fortuitous find, too; it wasn’t easy to find something to fi t on that short wall, but the company made one that was just the right size. Next to the range, Burgess curtained the doorway to the pantry, adding softness and warmth to what can often be a cold space.

accomplished by removing a detached garage—and truckloads of dirt—and leveling the area. But just as important to Raulet was adding a master bedroom on the main floor. The original plan was to add not only the master but also a family room, providing space off the kitchen in which to entertain. But, Hammersmith says, it wasn’t long before he realized that the house would better accept a two-story addition. “Paul had to be talked into the second-floor space; he didn’t want to go into that much of a project.” In the end, however, the revamped floor plan turned out to be everything the homeowner wanted—and more. Another smart move on Raulet’s part was to bring designer Betty Burgess on board early, just as the framing got started. “From the moment Paul and I met for the fi rst time at my office, it was instant chemistry,” says Burgess. “We’re completely honest with each other, and at the same time respect each other’s opinions. And that’s key.” “It’s like a marriage!” laughs Raulet. “I can’t imagine how things would have turned out if I hadn’t picked the right ‘partner.’ ” Throughout the house, Burgess stayed true to her signature style while creating a purely personal place for the owner. “I feel like there have to be classical anchors as well as some unexpected modern elements to make a place fresh,” she explains. Case in point: A pair of classical chairs in the living room are covered in a modern orange fabric. “I’m not a modern or contemporary guy but I like the mix, the edginess,” says Raulet. 68

Likewise, the designer deftly merged pieces Raulet already owned with new acquisitions. “I used a lot of what he already had, and—from a budget point of view—I think that’s really important,” Burgess says. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to start a project with a clean slate, but it’s always important to be sensitive to the sentimental value of my clients’ possessions.” “She was very good at using things I already had,” Raulet confi rms. “That zebra rug in the dining room? I bought that when I was in Tanzania. It was rolled up in a closet and I hadn’t looked at it for a long time. But it’s perfect there!” In fact, the owner seems hard-pressed to think of a single thing he’d change. “I really wanted a comfortable, cozy family house in an ‘old school’ neighborhood; that was the goal,” says Raulet. “And I think we achieved that. Not only do my kids love this house but everybody who walks in says they could move right in. To us, this house has a soul and represents a very welcoming feeling.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 70

It was only a matter of time before the two creative souls were destined to meet.
F
ive years after being introduced by a mutual friend, Malissa Ladd and Bill Peace stood at the altar of their sacred space and said, “We do.” How does one blend a menagerie of friends, family and distinct styles of a renowned interior designer and an awardwinning marketing executive to plan the wedding of the year? One peace at a time. Immediately following their engagement, the question of “where” would follow the two into virtually every conversation about their special day. “We thought about a ‘runaway wedding’ out in the middle of an unsuspecting rancher’s field in Montana—our home away from home—at sunset, but decided to stay here where the people we cherish most
in our daily lives could be there,” says Malissa. “It was all about sharing—our relationship, our home and our favorite people.” Final wedding destination: Villa Petrol, a 100-year-old-gas-station-converted-home purchased by Bill in 2004. The couple’s private Atlanta residence offered a backdrop of beauty, ease, and sophistication—unmistakably the home of Peace. Grammy-award winning Jerry Nettuno played the fiddle as the breathtaking bride cascaded down the aisle to the guiding hand of Gene Ladd, her father. “My dad developed a beautiful ceremony for us,” beams Malissa. “He is a wonderfully spiritual person, and having him perform the ceremony was extremely special to us both.”
Following the much-anticipated nuptials, family and friends from Kentucky, New York, Montana and Atlanta moved from the living room to an outdoor veranda, where an intimate dinner for 36 was held under a wisteria-covered arbor. The menu (consisting of small entrees of regional meat and seafood served with local produce) was designed and prepared by Todd Annis, executive chef at Bold American Catering, “to provide our family and friends with a unique experience,” says Bill. “It was amazing.” Enter 100 additional dynamic guests— artists, architects, designers, chefs, business professionals and restaurateurs—and the magical day culminated with music from The Whiskey Gentry, poolside specialty cocktails by Atlanta Concoctions, and a flawless cake by Virginia Rankin of Mert’s Cakes handdelivered from Louisville, Kentucky. As the last guest left and celebration now complete, the newlyweds crossed the threshold to their new life, knowing the enchanted day was but a glimpse of many to come. 75

I READILY ADMIT THAT I CAME OF AGE WHEN N a summer trip to the Alabama coast was a thing of wonder. We rented ’60s- and ’70s-era condos with AstroTurf carpet, stalagmite ceilings and their own salty-air ecosystems. It was heaven. But now, with a daughter, Anabelle—who thinks Lyford Cay is an appropriate winter break—I find myself on the road again, and it is far from the boiled peanut stands and putt-putt courses of my youth. Anabelle signed up for a summer in Florence with four extra days in Rome, little realizing that I would be tracking her every move like a wildebeest on the Serengeti. Even though the Duomo and the Vatican were the priorities of the day, my best friend and I made sure Anabelle’s trip was punctuated with unannounced sightings of us in Florence. And Rome. What the trip really did was remind me of how much has really changed in Atlanta. We don’t need a trip to Italy to shop like Florentine gentry, with Ferragamo and Frette available in our own backyards. We have access to the profumeria de Santa Maria Novella—such delicious scents. So what if we miss the frescoed ceilings? From Peachtree City to the Piedmont, we have all the Parmesan and pecorino cheeses, truffles and paninis we can eat. Our young ’uns ask for Farfalle pasta—al dente, of course—not the SpaghettiO’s we clamored for. We have all the Italian silks you could ever need at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. You can even buy a Vespa to get them home, further proving you don’t have to leave Atlanta to live like an Italian. Ciao!
