“ My breast cancer diagnosis was the heaviest weight I’ve ever had to bear.” Karyn K Kary Ka ary yn Ma M Mars Marshall, ars rsh hall hall ha ll,, DC Breast Cancer Patient Doctor of Chiropractic World Champion Weightlifter

As a world-record-setting weight lifter, I was determined to bring the tenacity that had served me so well in the gym to my fight against breast cancer. My team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) combined advanced cancer treatments with supportive therapies like acupuncture, nutritional counseling, and chiropractic care to help ease the side effects of my treatment. I know it made me a much better fighter. Today, I’m busy training for fitness competitions again. And I’m more certain than ever that CTCA® was the right choice for me. Karyn received Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) – a procedure that combines surgery and a single dose of radiation to help patients finish treatment faster. To learn more about IORT, visit cancercenter.com/IORT or call 1.888.845.2471. No case is typical. You should not expect to experience these results.

WELCOME

Personal style

is one of those things for which we all strive. After all, nobody wants their homes or wardrobes to be cookie-cutter versions of someone else’s. That said, there are often individuals who have the confidence to forge their own paths and create something so unique, it inspires others to embody, emulate, or, at the very least, adapt for themselves. Atlanta designer Suzanne Kasler is one of those individuals. In addition to her highly anticipated second book, Timeless Style (Rizzoli), debuting this month, the tastemaker’s reach extends far beyond I-285. Her successful product lines are scooped up by those who aspire to live a life surrounded by casual elegance, and her interiors are favorites of international magazines and design bloggers alike. It’s this sort of reach and influence that compelled us to ask Kasler to serve as guest editor for this month’s issue. On the pages that follow, she shares her secrets to a well-lived life and timeless decorating advice that comes from more than two decades in design. We know you’ll be inspired by the special section that she’s curated, as well as the rest of the issue. Enjoy! —The Editors

FINDS A CUR ATOR OF CHIC AND TIMELESS STYLE, K ASLER SHARES SOME OF HER MOST CHERISHED BELONGINGS.

“This miniature stone landscape by French artist Claude Boulle is one of several I own. I had it framed and I love how the rough texture of the piece looks against the linen and the gilt frame.”

“I love my vintage Hublot watch, which was custom designed and came from an estate sale in California. With its matte gold finish and simple black strap, it’s the perfect combination of casual and elegant. Although oversized like a man’s watch, the diamond bezel adds a feminine touch.” hublot.com

“The Hotel Costes in Paris is so chic. The first time I went, I was so taken with their music. When I play it at home, it takes me back.” hotelcostes.com

“I think I have a definitive collection of Eiffel Towers. Its shape continues to inspire me and, surprisingly, it took years to find an all-white one.”

“I was passing a perfume vendor booth at Scott Antique Market and immediately fell in love with this overscaled vintage Andy Warhol Lalique perfume bottle. I went back to buy another one as a gift and there were none left.”

“Cartier clocks are like pieces of jewelry for your dressing table. This one was given to us as a wedding gift and I love the detailing.” cartier.com

ESSENTIALS WHAT MAKES A HOUSE A HOME? THE DESIGNER OPENS UP ABOUT THE OBJECTS SHE USES IN MANY OF HER INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECTS, AND WHY.

“Collections are important to our work. The composition of a collection or how it’s arranged can take it to another level. These miniature portraits were found in a Montpelier flea market. I bought all they had, but it was not an even number. This arrangment gives the antique pictures almost a modern edge.” The chair is from Kasler’s collection with Hickory Chair and is upholstered in a Clarence House fabric.

▲ “The new platinum sisal from Stark is the perfect color tone for all of our projects. I’ve used it at my own home and at my office. It just looks so fresh.” starkcarpet.com

▲ “Taffeta, linen and velvet are three fabrics that I love to use on almost every project. Three of my favorites include John Saladino

velvets, Rogers & Goffigon linens and Lee Jofa taffetas.” saladinostyle.com, delaneyandlong.com and leejofa.com

▼ “Armless sofas are like architectural pieces. They can go in modern spaces or traditional ones.” Leigh Made to Measure sofa by Hickory Chair. hickorychair.com

“Rose Tarlow’s Sabre Leg chair is simply timeless. I often upholster it in linen, which gives it a tailored touch and really shows off its silhouette.” rosetarlow.com

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi von Habersham I recently wrapped up a month-long sojourn in New York City, where I stayed in my postage stamp-sized pied-à-terre on the Upper East Side. Never mind that my apartment is so small that I must step outside to change my mind. Who spends time at home when Bergdorf and Barneys are right around the corner? And why worry about not having a kitchen when one can take breakfast at Viand, lunch at Sant Ambroeus and dinner at Swifty’s? The excitement of being back in the big city—not to mention those two cocktails I consumed at Bemelmans Bar— must have taken hold of my faculties, because for some mad reason, I texted 12 old friends and invited them to dinner at my place. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but when I awoke the next morning, it dawned on me that I have no dining table in my apartment, which, by the way, only has seating for eight. So, I did as any space-challenged New Yorker would do: I got creative. The secret to dining in a one-room apartment, I learned, is the tray supper. Sturdy bamboo trays balance easily on guests’ laps, while oversized linen napkins (the kind that designers go on and on about) really do protect laps and furniture from spills. And, as much as I dislike stemless wineglasses, they’re a lifesaver in just these situations. A tipsy glass on the lap tray of a tipsy guest is an accident waiting to happen. Seating wasn’t the problem that I initially feared, though. Six guests would commandeer the sofa and chairs, two guests could perch on the pair of Billy Baldwin Turkish ottomans, and the rest of us would utilize big floor cushions. But the best thing about my party was this: no grocery-schlepping! I ordered Greek food from the restaurant up the street (they deliver), and my liquor from Sherry-Lehmann (they too deliver). All in all, the dinner turned out to be a smashing success. Atlanta may have more spacious abodes than New York, but it sure doesn’t have package stores that deliver.

WHERE TO GO

NOW OPEN

PRESERVING PLACE, a retail market-meetscooking school concept, is making its mark among Atlanta’s locavore-loving set. Styled after a traditional general store, the new shop—located just below Westside’s Abbatoir—is stocked with locally canned and fermented goods like chutneys, relishes and jams. Owner Martha McMillin, who draws upon her childhood roots in rural South Carolina, where canning was a family tradition, brings her passion for sharing exceptional preserved foods to the forefront with handson classes ranging from canning to cheeseand even baby food-making.

WRITTEN BY

SEJAL BHIMA

“My goal for this shop was to create an inviting space where people can gather and learn about preserving techniques,” she says. “I like to source produce from local farmers and preserve Southern food heritage through recipes and traditions.” For preserved goods made in-house, McMillin collaborated with culinary maven Virginia Willis to develop a line of signature recipes. In keeping with an authentic Southern experience, the shop also sells gift items made by local craftspeople, such as wooden recipe boxes, heirloom knives and Charleston seagrass baskets. For a schedule of classes, call (404) 815-5267 or visit preservingplace.com.

Local chefs dish on their favorite fig creations

“I love the combination of fresh figs and high-quality chèvre. At Opulent, I poach figs in balsamic vinegar and red wine to give them a sweetness and acidity that just sings with the CalyRoad Creamery chèvre. Coupled with confit chicken, locally sourced arugula and olive oil, our chicken and fig flatbread is a guest favorite.” –Bob McDonough, Opulent

38

“Fig season is one of my favorite times of the year here at the restaurant. One of the most overlooked parts of figs is the leaves. We love to wrap sea scallops in fig leaves, then skewer and toss them on the grill. It really imparts a nutty, aromatic flavor on the scallops. I serve them drizzled with aged balsamic, olive oil and a side of grilled figs for a quick and simple meal.” –Drew Beeline, No. 246

“I love the simplicity of figs; they don't need any fussy preparation. You can create a decadent dessert by combining the fruit with just a few ingredients. First, I create a compote of fresh figs, sugar and honey. Then I place three or four halved figs on top with a butter-honey-lemon sauce poured over it all. Add a scoop of whipped cream and enjoy!” –Cindy LeBlanc, White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails

As committee chairs for Georgia Aquarium’s Next Wave Society, Joanna, Dan and I couldn’t be more pleased to welcome you to the 8th annual Aqua Vino! The entire Aquarium is yours to explore this evening, and we encourage you to take in as much of this wonderful world of sea life as possible. All proceeds from Aqua Vino 2013 support Georgia Aquarium’s Whale Shark research and conservation efforts. Since 2003, Georgia Aquarium has been a global leader in whale shark research, and we are constantly growing our knowledge base for this majestic species. A few of the many projects have included: migration pattern studies through tagging; diet studies to learn what, when, and how whale sharks eat; and how whale sharks interact with other species in the area.

Celebrity’s Caribbean is the perfect getaway for your family. And with a wide variety of vacations, ranging from 4- to 14 nights, you’re sure to find the perfect escape. On board, experience modern, upscale accommodations, world-class dining and intuitive service. Because we believe every moment of your vacation should be measured by just how far it takes you from the ordinary.

That’s modern luxury.SM

Georgia Aquarium has recently become a founding partner of a new initiative, “Blue Realm.” The primary goal of this new organization is to achieve UNESCO world heritage listing for the coastal marine waters of Northern Quintana Roo, where hundreds of whale sharks and other species of sea life congregate each year. It is a tremendously important hot spot of biological diversity, and one worth concerted conservation efforts. This lofty goal will help protect not only whale sharks but also manta rays, sea turtles, bill fish, dolphin, mobula, and countless other majestic species. This goal can only be achieved through education, advocacy and the continuing research efforts of Georgia Aquarium and our partners as well as through funds raised from generous supporters like you. With your support, our dedication to global conservation, research and enhancing the quality of life in our communities on both land and sea is as strong as it has ever been. Our strong foundation of remarkable members and leadership is the key. We send a special thank you to all of our 2013 sponsors, our host and auction committees, patrons, restaurants, wineries, and our team of volunteers. Your efforts and commitment make this event successful year after year.

WHALE SHARK CONSERVATION AT GEORGIA AQUARIUM Until recently, aggregations of whale sharks off Belize and Mexico were not well known. Seeing a whale shark in the ocean was so rare that even well-known oceanographers such as Dr. Sylvia Earle and Philippe Cousteau did not see their first whale shark until coming to an aquarium. Georgia Aquarium is committed to whale shark conservation, advancing the scientific community’s understanding of whale sharks and growing public awareness of whale sharks as an ambassador species for sharks. By researching and caring for whale sharks, the Aquarium is able to participate in groundbreaking scientific research and to educate millions of people about the animals, both of which encourage and promote the conservation of the species. We hope by attending tonight’s event you will come to appreciate this majestic species even more, and will be motivated to help us in our research and conservation efforts. An unconventional but winsome composition in Suzanne Kasler’s master bedroom includes a vintage Georges Braque poster (an Avignon flea market find) and a pair of reverse-painted glass pieces from the Murano glass factory in Venice. left Known for her masterful eye for editing, Kasler created an artful combination of pieces by Thomas Pheasant, Bunny Williams, Rose Tarlow and Nancy Corzine to formulate one cohesive statement in the master sitting room.

The mirrored diamond element bracketing the window in the master bedroom is one of the space’s most striking features. Kasler created it with the help of residential designer William T. Baker, who removed all of the molding for a streamlined effect. An upholstered bergère chair from a Paris flea market punctuates the scene.

THOUGH SHE MOVED into the Regency-style home she shares with husband John Morris more than five years ago, the master suite was the last space designer Suzanne Kasler completed in their Buckhead abode. Perhaps that’s because creating a sanctuary that not only strikes a balance between relaxation and rejuvenation but also one that’s intensely personal is no easy feat. But these days, an escape for Kasler, one of today’s most in-demand designers, is more essential than ever. The designer’s new tome, Timeless Style (R izzoli, $55), arrives in stores this month, and devotes 10 full pages to the sanctu-

clockwise from top Antique Russian benches are upholstered in a sumptuous Fortuny fabric; the pair’s serpentine wooden legs and stretchers, and scalloped cushions inspired the designer’s Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair Anastasia bench. The original versions hold court in the master bedroom beneath a series of framed intaglios. The architect’s cabinet in the hallway, previously black in another residence, once stowed artwork but now houses the designer’s costume jewelry collections. A custom mirror by Antonio Crespo adds a little glitz to the arrangement. Even Kasler’s favorite statement jewels reveal an interesting mix of color, texture and material.

ary where she retreats to read and recharge. Kasler tailored the space to a T with the help of residential designer William T. Baker, creating a cocoon-like, ethereal effect with plaster-inspired walls in a f lat, f loral white finish. A sugary white Stark rug and glimmering accents complete the look. After searching at length for the perfect periwinkle taffeta silk, Kasler fashioned the fabric into tailored window treatments and upholstered the walls. A sumptuous Fortuny fabric ties it all together, gracing an elongated bed pillow, a Nancy Corzine R ichelieu bench and a pair of antique Russian stools, which hold court beneath a set of framed intaglios. Both high-glamour and highly personal, even Kasler’s most private spaces embrace a sense of stateliness. In the closet, a quatrefoil chair named for her daughter, a wire mannequin festooned with festive baubles and a collage of framed invitations resonate with memories. “Bedrooms are very personal,” Kasler says. “They’re where we begin our days in the morning and end them each evening. I always want the bedroom to be a place of elegance and escape.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

A wall in her closet displays framed fashion show invitations. “I often tell people that pieces not seemingly valuable as artwork are often the most special. They can be treasured menus or invitations with beautiful memories. I like having this whole collection. It reminds me of when I was at the couture shows in Paris.” In the pristine master bath, a Waterworks tub floats amid square tiles of Thassos marble and pure white walls. opposite Kasler’s Asheworth campaign desk for Hickory Chair was lacquered white, topped with glass and adorned with nickel hardware to create the perfect dressing table.

SPITZMILLER & NORRIS AND DESIGNER LAUREN DELOACH REFRESH THE INTERIORS OF A TR ADITIONAL BUCKHEAD TOWNHOUSE FOR A PAIR OF DOWNSIZING HOMEOWNERS W tten by Wri Kat a e Abney Photog Pho o o rap r hed by M i Azima Mal Pro oduced by Clinto C Cl nt n Smith

In the combination dining roomlibrary, traditional but handsome details are tempered by curvy, feminine upholstery and draperies which puddle softly on the floor. The silvery sage hue of the coffered ceiling is one of the sole splashes of color in the neutral home. The antique breakfast table is from the homeowners’ collection. 69

In one of the most significant cosmetic changes, architectural firm Spitzmiller & Norris raised the height of the windows and doors. Designer Lauren DeLoach enhanced the dramatic effect by painting the panes a rich gray. Balcony doors in the sitting room keep the townhouse from feeling too contained. The island countertops are Lagos Azul limestone.

ALL TOO OFTEN, AFTER CHILDR EN GROW UP AND the youngest finally leaves the nest, homeowners are faced with the age-old quandary: live with too much house for too few inhabitants, or pare down and redistribute belongings to a humble new dwelling. Challenged to consolidate favorite pieces to fit in a reduced footprint, many are left feeling unsettled. But when this active couple decided to trade a Brookhaven manse for a four-story townhome in a walkable Buckhead community, their longtime architects, R ick Spitzmiller and Robert Norris, made sure that wasn’t the case. That meant making sig-

72

nificant changes to the existing interior architecture, including gutting a kitchen that was “awkwardly stuffed ” into the front of the house and building it anew at the heart of the home. For this pair, both avid cooks and organic farmers, the modified layout makes sense; their airy new workspace blends seamlessly into the sitting room, adjoined by a wet bar in an updated Shaker style. Throughout the residence, constricting walls were whisked away, resulting in open spaces such as a cozy dining room-cumlibrary complete with a fireplace, curv y upholstery and painted wood paneling.

Part of what made the design so successful was the acumen of contractor Greg DeLoach, who executed the architects’ vision with uncompromising exactitude. He also brought in his better half, interior designer Lauren DeLoach. Taking her cues from the homeowners, Lauren’s finishes and furnishings played with texture and tones rather than patterns and hues. And every understated design element was edited with painstaking precision. “The homeowners didn’t want it to be perfectly set or decorated down to the last tchotchke,” Lauren notes. Instead, art collections—from turned-wood bowls by Robert Piscitelli to works on

paper by Brett Smith—take the spotlight in custom niches and walls, set amid a soft palette grounded by crisp black accents. “These homeowners really like elements that contribute textural interest and warmth to their spaces, and it’s this sort of vocabulary that we’ve developed with them over time,” explains Spitzmiller. “These decisions give scale and definition to their spaces.” Thanks to this design team, they’ve gained a retreat that feels just as spacious and warm as their previous abode. It has privacy, but it’s appealing. And it’s made the whole process of paring down entirely pleasant. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 73

Simple but sensual arrangements of sweet peas, lavender and purple heather set the scene for the summery affair held inside and out of Suzanne Kasler’s Regency-style estate. The lush setting, complete with casual and formal touches, created a convivial atmosphere for mingling business and pleasure.

Behind the Seen If there’s one thing Suzanne Kasler does more beautifully

than create inspiring, comfortable spaces, it’s supporting the generation of like-minded talent currently coming of age. After joining the Savannah College of Art & Design’s advisory council in 2012—following years of involvement with its interior design program—the designer embraced the opportunity to host May’s SCAD Seen Gala 2013 patron party, where she entertained approximately 80 of the university’s most valued supporters at the Regency-style Buckhead estate she shares with husband John Morris. “As a person in the creative world, I know how design can make a difference,” she says. “I’ve seen what [president] Paula Wallace has done—all over the world. The students and staff members of SCAD show such energy and enthusiasm...how they’re thinking outside the box.” Kasler applauds the school’s excellent instruction of “design thinking,” a skill she utilized with aplomb when planning this fête. The key to party-planning success, she says, is preparing the day before, leaving the date of the event to weather unexpected snags. This laissez-faire attitude allows the hostess to relax and have fun, which is a graciousness her guests will in turn notice and appreciate. At the patron party, guests moved freely between indoors and out, which encouraged conviviality and conversation, strengthening friendships and fostering new connections, both personal and professional. The evening’s cuisine, prepared by Dennis Dean Catering and served buffet-style from the formal dining room, was enjoyed beneath a lush canopy of European-clipped sycamore trees in Kasler’s backyard, where French cafe chairs and a linen-draped communal table anchored the intimate architecture of the pea gravel courtyard. “I love the juxtaposition of relaxed and formal. I do it in my work, and I love it when entertaining,” she says. “It’s those wonderful details, in entertaining as much as design, where the fun is in mixing high and low.” 77

“I love the juxtaposition of relaxed and formal. I do it in my work and I love it when entertaining,” says Kasler.

Esteemed guests from the SCAD coterie, as well as the local design circuit, included from left: Nathan Lycan; Moattar, Ltd., president Jason Moattar; senior vice president for University Resources Glenn Wallace; Wendy Conrad Aronson; and president Paula Wallace.

The same pale lavender linen used to drape the long dining table, Kasler’s signature fabric for Ballard Designs, was used for curtain panels that envelope the intimate outdoor fireplace furnished with seating by Janus et Cie. Dennis Dean Catering prepared pear tarts on turbinado-sugared shortbread crust.

WHEN LONGTIME ATLANTA R ESIDENTS Claire and Jason Zintak decided to build a house in Chastain Park, creating a space that was not off-limits to their three children was top of mind. “We wanted a family home where every room is used,” says Claire. Searching for a free-f lowing f loor plan to accommodate their party of five (not to mention two f luffy Labradoodles), the Zintaks looked to their former neighbor, architect Greg Palmer, principal of Atlanta’s award-winning Harrison Design Associates, for guidance. “We took a traditional house blueprint and exploded it to fit a more updated lifestyle where there are few doors and openings,”

says Palmer of the transitional layout, which links the kitchen and living room at the heart of the house. Bathed in natural light and cool tones of white and pale grey, the space is the Zintaks’ epicenter of family meals, homework and movie nights. In keeping with the family’s relaxed aesthetic, Atlanta interior designer Beth Webb stocked the three-story, five-bedroom house with furniture and accessories for living, not just for show. “There’s not a formal seat in the living room. They pile up in that room and watch TV as a family,” says Webb, who brought in outdoor fabrics, as well as translucent window treatments to soften the light. The designer also infused the house with a playful mix to appeal to the couple’s sense of eclecticism. “Although the dining room is more formal than the rest of

the house, it’s still organized in an eclectic way so that it relates back to the foyer,” says Webb, who added a pair of patinaed lamps on the sideboard to reference the adjacent entry hall ’s antiqued focal mirror. “This house is a major chameleon,” says the designer of the home’s cool versatility. Texture also plays an important role, from the honeycomb molding in the dining room to a vaulted pyramid breakfast nook. “There aren’t a lot of obstacles to feeling comfortable in this house,” says Palmer. This also holds true in the cypresspaneled library, which Webb warmed up with rich nav y tones and strokes of Hermès orange. “We wanted one little cozy room that’s tucked away,” says Claire. “In the cool of winter, it’s the perfect spot to cuddle up in front of the fire.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

QUINTESSENTIALLY ATLANTA

SUNBURST MIRRORS What makes an Atlanta house a HOME? In the tenth installment of our year-long series on the essentials of every Atlanta residence, MARCIA SHERRILL reflects on the fairest of them all.

A

SUZANNE KASLER’S EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION OF SUNBURST MIRRORS FOR BALLARD DESIGNS FEATURES VINTAGE-LIKE APPEAL. BALLARDDESIGNS.COM 96

TLANTA HOMES used to be uniformly traditional. Remember when the Colonial Williamsburg look of the 1970s and ’80s took hold of every house in town? As a city, we refused to be beguiled by anything smacking of modern design. While some threw out heirloom Sheraton-style dining room tables in exchange for matching contemporary suites, many stayed true to classic design. For those who dared to go mod, it was all or nothing. Out with granny’s Aubussons and in with sisal rugs. Where was the happy medium? Finally, Atlantans decided that we really could have the best of old and new, and Atlanta suddenly became the epicenter for a whole new way of blending both. The ubiquitous contemporary painting hanging over a

19th-century bureau became the de facto modern element in an otherwise all-traditional home. I, for one, refused to get rid of my antiques, instead simply adding one-of-a-kind murals or a Plexiglass table. Somewhere along the way, our love affair with sunburst mirrors settled in to stay. Above fi replaces, flanking stately beds, even taking the place of a window, this decorative element stands the test of decor time because of its versatility and damned good looks. Not to say that we are vain, but Atlantans do love a good mirror. Passed down as gently as our beloved silver and china, sunburst mirrors feature two things we adore: a reflective surface and a large amount of gilt. Just like our favorite jewels, they add a little shimmer and sparkle that flatters everyone.
