passion projects IN TODAY’S WORLD OF INSTANT EVERYTHING, taking the time to get something not just right, but darn-near perfect seems almost counter-culture. Why does being 100 percent present; devoting your energy solely to accomplishing one task; and eliminating distraction seem like yeoman’s work?

Our October issue explores in depth residences that are both restrained and welcoming. While these two adjectives are seemingly irreconcilable, it’s possible to achieve both when passions of the designers and their clients are kept in check. In “Modern Milieu” (page 54), interior designer Kay Douglass’ flair for the spare is emboldened by punches of playful color in citron, citrus and lilac. Douglass has always been known for her dramatic contrasts, but here, they emerge through artfully arranged pairings placed in elegant restraint. In “Poetry of Place” (page 64), architect Bobby McAlpine and interior designer Betsy Brown strike a rare balance between the ethereal and the austere with an intriguing residence where rhythmic gestures meet a studied seriousness, both inside and out.

The architect, whose book, Poetry of Place: The New Architecture and Interiors of McAlpine, debuts this month, sums up his passion for creating personal spaces: “The net reward is creating a place so congruous to who you are that there is nowhere else in the whole world that makes you and your loved ones feel that particular way, because it’s an without you.” Breathing an intangible spirit into the tangible is a talent, indeed.

W

HEN LIZ GODWIN ENGAGES in a new project, she keeps her catchphrase “luxurious livability” in mind at every turn. And she’s certainly well equipped to accomplish that goal to lovely effect. After interning at Sotheby’s and with design legend Dan Carithers, Godwin worked with noted decorator Jackye Lanham for 14 years before starting her own firm.

She’s not afraid of pairing valuable antiques with more contemporary pieces and doesn’t believe that luxury always means expensive—with smart choices, a little can go a long way in creating chic, approachable rooms. “I actually have a passion for finding ways to save money when we can and enjoy that process,” she explains.

When it comes to color, Godwin generally gravitates towards softer shades. “While working with Dan and Jackye, both masters of the neutral palette, I learned that layering neutrals and mixing multiple textures keeps them from being anything but boring,” she says.

For this Buckhead renovation, Godwin collaborated with architect Amanda Orr and builder Jason Cole. From the start, Godwin sought to bring fresh life to the house with a much-improved floor plan, enlarged kitchen, new back porch and custom accents throughout.

“We wanted this to be a family, pet-friendly home that’s comfortable, with entertaining options and timeless, stylish appeal,” says Godwin.

Each room shows off the designer’s confident touch in creating that signature luxurious livability.

right The kitchen renovation included a new whitewash-stained pantry door for a touch of patina in the pristine white room. The same stain treatment transformed the paneling in the adjoining breakfast room. below While the living room did not change dramatically in the renovation, it did receive a beautiful limestone fireplace topped by a dreamy painting by Laura Hathaway and striking gilt floral medallions above the piano.

In the entry, she accomplished this with an Oushak rug, a dramatic Venetian mirror, high gloss–painted paneling and a metallic foil-papered ceiling. In the dining room, she introduced elegant texture and shimmer through grasscloth wallpaper, window panels on gilded rods and a gold-and-crystal chandelier. The former powder room, now a butler’s pantry, is hardworking, but it’s also a little jewel box thanks to the addition of a glamorous, antiqued-mirror wall and an X-pattern design on the glass-front cabinets.

Details matter in Godwin’s presentation—that X-pattern reappears in the adjoining kitchen’s upper cabinets, while the pantry door’s whitewash stain treatment is repeated in the breakfast room’s wall paneling. The home also speaks to her preference for neutrals that also make a statement. “In the breakfast room, I blended the whitewash stain with the rattan of the chairs and the sisal of the rug—all in the same tone—but each texture brings its own personality to the space,” she explains.

However, the designer doesn’t shy away from bolder color strokes when needed to introduce a little drama into a space, such as the teal blue garden seats in the entry and the jewel-toned oriental rug in the butler’s pantry.

“I appreciate everything about the design process,” she says, “and love when my vision and the client’s desires meld together to create interiors that meet their needs and are also beautiful.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Growing up in a tiny South Georgia town as the daughter of a businessman and an artist, Deanne Levison aspired to be a doctor.

“However,” she says, “while working on a study of Southern woods, I discovered microscopic wood analysis as a way to verify provenance and authenticity, and that changed my career.”

Deanne Levison American Antiques opened in Buckhead in the 1970s. Longtime friend and collector Sally Hawkins joined Levison as the manager of the gallery while Levison expanded the clientele to include museums, collectors and designers.

The National Stage

In 1987 Levison was the first Southern dealer to be invited to exhibit at the prestigious Winter Antiques Show in Manhattan. “We were thrilled when The New York Times featured our booth, designed by Nancy Braithwaite,” says Levison.

She soon caught the attention of the preeminent dealer of 18th-century American antiques in Manhattan, Israel Sack Inc. “Sack has galleries represented in The Metropolitan Museum of Art,” she says, “so when they asked me to become a consultant, it was an incredible opportunity to work with prominent museums and distinguished collectors.”

Levison was also president of the invitation-only National Antique and Art Dealers Association of America. Additionally, she was a contributing writer to The Magazine Antiques and authored the foreword for Neat Pieces: The Plain-Style Furniture of Georgia (the catalog for a 1983 exhibition at the Atlanta History Center) and for Albert Sack’s The New Fine Points of Furniture: Early American.

After a decade of commuting to Manhattan, she returned to Atlanta in 1998 to open The Levison & Cullen Gallery with her daughter Suzanna Cullen.

Levison has served on advisory boards for numerous museums and institutions, including the Henry D. Green Center of the Georgia Museum of Art, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA), the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum and many others.

Her clients have included the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Colonial Williamsburg; the High Museum of Art; and the McKissick Museum.

Levison has also developed collections for private investment collectors and worked with the country’s top interior designers.

In 2012 she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Decorative Arts by the Green Center at the Georgia Museum of Art. Today she still travels between the South and New York for clients, saying, “The market hasn’t stopped, and neither have I.”

Naomi Von Habersham IF YOU WERE AN ADULT IN THE 1970s, you’ll remember when modernism was defined by the high-tech look. Like a well-appointed Radio Shack, these contemporary-minded interiors featured gadgets front and center, and the more conspicuously displayed they were, the better.

Take audio equipment, for example. A necessity for the ’70s-era modern home, hi-fi systems tended to be so cumbersome, they often became a significant part of a room’s architecture. I vividly remember the apartment of one stylish friend whose living room had Ultrasuede-upholstered furniture, black walls and a built-in stereo system so big, it practically took up an entire wall. It all sounds dated, I know, but back then, it was cutting-edge. Thank goodness today’s home gadgetry is all about discretion. With tunes cued by our iPhones and wireless speakers practically hidden into a room’s framework, we can listen to music without having to stare its mechanics in the face.

Do you also recall how aggressive modern furnishings used to be? Stainless steel was practically a requirement, whether on furniture, walls or (shudder) beds. So, too, was leather, preferably used as upholstery in shades of white or black. Even window treatments seemed risqué, with shiny chrome blinds (both horizontal and vertical varieties) shutting out the light and creating dens of iniquity. Taken as a whole, the look was even more louche than an evening spent partying at Studio 54.

We’re fortunate that today’s modernism is no longer a nocturnal-only endeavor but rather a style of living that also addresses daytime pursuits. How nice it is to walk into a sleek, minimal space that is filled with light, not perpetually cast in darkness. And I can’t tell you how glad I am that modern materials are no longer limited to hardened, metallic surfaces, encompassing instead soft fabrics and even wood left in its natural state. Just as disco should be left to the past (oh, OK, crank it up once in a blue moon, if you must), so should the high-tech look. I’ll take today’s easy-to-live-with modernism any day—or night—of the week.

WHILE LIFE’S A BEACH WHEN LIVING SEASIDE, the hustle and bustle of city life beckoned David and Melanie Jorden back to Houston in 2014. After discovering the perfect four-bedroom abode on a tree-lined street, they embarked on a home redesign with their good friend Kay Douglass, an interior designer and owner of Atlanta’s South of Market, who worked with the Jordens on their previous homes in Rosemary Beach, Florida. As recent empty nesters and parents of three young adults, the couple wanted a family-focused home with plenty of space for themselves and their visiting children.

“It’s a lovely, rambling home with lots of living areas, so everyone has a private space to retreat,” says Douglass. “The upstairs is beautifully divided into two main wings—the master suite with a sitting room, and a kids wing.”

As they did in their Florida residences, the Jordens made connecting the outdoors with the interiors a priority. In the sun-drenched master bedroom, iron doors were installed to maximize views of the courtyard, where Melanie practices daily yoga. Equally as peaceful were the subtle textures with which Douglass outfitted the retreat: woven carpeting, custom linens, an oversized headboard and plush gray chairs, culminating in

what Douglass describes as “understated elegance with a dash of European restraint.”

Both the master bedroom and adjoining bathroom are painted a dewy neutral (Seapearl by Benjamin Moore) that syncs well with the violet accents in both spaces. The spainspired bathroom is outfitted with contrasting details, like small-scaled Carrara marble tiles and black-and-white abstract watercolor paintings, which add a contemporary touch above the upholstered bench.

Connected to the master suite is a private study and sitting room, one of the most dynamic spaces in the home. Boasting dramatic walls with vivid color pairings of striking green and burnt orange, this adult space—which also functions as David’s office—is both bold and graceful. Orange velvet chaises, a flax linen-blend couch and green throw pillows, all from South of Market, create a cool and contemporary seating arrangement that’s equally comfortable and glamorous. A geometric black walnut fixture, also from South of Market, anchors the sitting area, while the streamlined library table holds court beneath dynamic art by Susan Hable.

But the adults don’t have all the fun. In the entertainment room, oversized gray sofas and club chairs create the perfect setting for lounging in the cozy, elongated space, which pops

against playful citron-hued ottomans. Downstairs, the adjoining dining and living rooms counterbalance each other with contrasting color play. The dynamic green of the formal dining room walks the line between moody and calming—especially when paired with a chic banquette and vintage seating upholstered in green velvet, all surrounding a midcentury French tulip table.

In contrast, the living room bursts with natural light that bounces against the neutral walls, with well-appointed furnishings 60

and accents, including the lush purple velvet arm chaise and a gallery wall of Brian Carter ink drawings from Holland & Company, keeping the eye focused. It’s juxtapositions like these that create a merry mélange for the entire home.

“They wanted a space that felt comfortable and happy. It’s the playfully paired color combinations against the neutral backdrop that bring these spaces to life,” Douglass says. “When you walk into the front door, it truly feels magical.” See Resources, Back of Book.

In the restrained yet welcoming living room, Betsy Brown’s ethereal interiors complete the feeling of quiet intrigue in this compellingly designed residence.

A

AS PRINCIPAL OF HIS EPONYMOUS firm since 1983, Atlanta architect Bobby McAlpine is revered for timeless, inheritable architecture that is at once pared down and distinctive. As an artist, McAlpine has an esoteric, almost mystical manner, while as an architect, he is a master at distilling down ideas to their purest, sometimes monastic forms.

This flair for the spare was imperative to the owners of a new residence in Birmingham’s upscale Redmont neighborhood. The house sits upon “the edge of a precipice with an outrageous, comprehensive view,” says McAlpine, an Alabama native. “You can look out onto the city as if it were a harbor of lights.”

As worldly wise as they are book smart, the homeowners, both academics, embody a studied seriousness that’s perfectly captured in the unadulterated stucco of the home’s street-facing facade.

It is formal and fortressed, like “the embassy for a country whose name you can’t quite remember,” says McAlpine. Or, as he even more curiously describes it, “a beautiful woman without eyebrows.”

Though an architect by trade, McAlpine tends to approach a project like a storyteller composing a narrative or a filmmaker setting up a scene (ironically rendered more authentic by the use of smoke and mirrors). He often talks about something he calls “emotional accuracy,” or capturing the es67

They become walking sequences long enough to allow you to complete a thought, to walk the house meditatively in an almost monastic way,” says McAlpine.

sence of his clients during a particular phase of life. While often a moving target, personal truth, he says, always trumps doctrine. It is that tireless search for truth that informs the ethos behind his firm.

“When [a new client] shows up at our office, they present the opportunity to mine ourselves and our psyches for what is pertinent,” he says. “All the hunting and gathering and depositing we’ve done in our [mental] archives finally gets to speak, because at last there is a call to it.” While McAlpine typically lays down the initial idea for a house, he says it’s his associates who deftly fill in the gaps: “They mature and develop that initial vision, especially if it’s vaporous.”

In the case of this stately Redmont residence, collaboration was central. Birmingham designer Betsy Brown followed McAlpine’s foundational architecture with interiors that are expertly edited and largely austere; McAlpine coined the term “Gustavian blanc-ness” to describe Brown’s light-handed approach and ethereal gray palette throughout—save a colorful library of textbooks upstairs.

“Bobby’s homes are very light-filled,” Brown says. “They flow very well. He is a master at putting together a plan with minimal hallways and beautiful allées from one room to another. The views

throughout this house are evidence of this; they are very powerful.”

As visitors enter the home by way of an elongated gallery, a floating scrim blurs the cinematic cityscape beyond. “I didn’t want to give it away just yet,” McAlpine explains. “Having that veil between two realities allows you to take the time to greet and hold and address someone before you gush about where you are.”

Spanning nearly the width of the entire house, the grand salon’s golden symmetry showcases those jaw-dropping views under a soft swath of Roman shades—an effect McAlpine compares to an 18th-century palace draped in sheets for the winter. Like the master bedroom he likens to a “launchpad” into the great wild yonder, McAlpine is constantly sussing out stories and giving them flight.

That thrill for narrative is central to his second book, Poetry of Place: The New Architecture and Interiors of McAlpine (Rizzoli, $55), out this month. Throughout its 288 pages, McAlpine’s voice comes on as strong as if you were chatting with him in his office. For that, credit writer Susan Sully, whose prose reflects her long-standing rapport with the architect. Yet, Poetry of Place reflects a noticeable shift in perspective and tone from The Home Within Us, the pair’s 69

first tome. In this collection, McAlpine gives each house a voice—appropriate, since his sophomore book is the house personified. This rhythmic dialogue is both reflected and illustrated through each of the 19 projects featured, including work from the firm’s celebrated interior design partners, Atlanta’s Susan Ferrier and Nashville’s Ray Booth.

So what is poetry of place? “It’s about the desire to create something that is so deeply familiar to you. The net reward is not just living in a place, but creating a place so congruous to who you are that there is nowhere else in the whole world that makes you and your loved ones feel that particular way, because it’s an extension of who you are, and it could not exist without you,” McAlpine says. “In our fourth decade of practice, I think we trust— more than ever—who’s in front of us.”

WHEN NEW YORK–BASED DESIGNER Aamir Khandwala’s well-traveled clients—a couple who also own two Khandwala-designed homes in New York—requested that he design their third residence in Atlanta, the designer knew he wanted the 2,500-square-foot condominium’s aesthetic to be both functional and unique.

Because the Midtown condo would be inhabited only four days out of the workweek, Khandwala and his clients set out to make it comfortable, stylish and not overly fussy. “We wanted to create spaces that are masculine, eclectic, warm, functional and easy to maintain,” he says. “The challenge was to make this apart-

Inspired by his clients’ favorite colors, the designer infused the condo with modern touches and a palette of blue, black and white, introducing earth tones here and there to add warmth. In the den, for instance, Khandwala incorporated a deep-brown sectional with soft-gray piping and a modular, custom bookshelf (designed through Atlanta’s Made Again) to create a cozy, masculine retreat.

Here, a felt orange chandelier provides a shock of color, but it allowed Khandwala to carry the warm hue throughout the condo.

“It’s the combination of all these elements that creates a fun room

that feels modern yet comfortable,” the designer says.

The living room—which received a chic but streamlined makeover thanks to a deft combination of playful patterns—takes a similar approach. “I wanted to keep the palette limited to two to three colors but find the right pieces that have a conversation with each other,” Khandwala says.

An antique black-and-white rug from Mazandaran, Iran, creates a striking focal point, its stripes mirrored in a coffee table inlaid with mango wood and bone. Vintage 1970s chairs (blue, of course) serve as comfortable perches to enjoy the condo’s sky-high views, while a pair of rectangular copper tables adds subtle sophistication.

Khandwala carried this deft use of bold, graphic motifs into the dining room, which he designed with intimate dinner parties in mind. With the help of artist Todd Seay, the designer created a color-blocked wall using various hues of blue and gray—Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, Parma Gray and Skylight.

“Since the palette in the living room was black and white, I wanted a little splash on the main wall in the dining area to wake things up a little bit,” says Khandwala. The wall colors are echoed in the drapery and dining chairs, which sidle up to a glass dining table from Restoration Hardware. “I can live in blue, and luckily I have a client who loves it as much as I do,” he notes.

It was only natural, then, that Khandwala carried blue into the master bedroom via a striking accent wall, painted Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, which he also used in the entryway. “I like to play with similar colors and items that may have the same sort of graphic feel,” he says. “I think that by using one element, the interiors become stronger.” See Resources,.Back of Book.

HILE BOTH ATLANTA AND LOS ANGELES are building state-of-the-art stadiums for their NFL teams, the differences between the projects speak to the two cities’ distinct personalities.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank is overseeing the internationally touted Mercedes-Benz Stadium with his trademark attention to quality and presentation. Designer-created suites promise elegance, while commissioned pieces from the Savannah College of Art and Design will be incorporated throughout the stadium—a winning combination that endorses the arts and sports. The 13-acre Home Depot Backyard will engage the Westside community with event and entertainment space. In total, Blank has executed his vision for a world-class stadium with the precision of a quarterback touchdown in the final second of the Super Bowl.

At the opposite end zone, Los Angeles prepares to debut its version of a state-of-the-art stadium at Hollywood Park, located in Inglewood and closer to LAX than Hollywood.

True to the LA image, it promises maximum bling with a 19acre transparent canopy over a 70,240-seat stadium designed by celebrated firm HKS. 88

Proclaimed as the “NFL Disney World,” the Los Angeles stadium will be the world’s most expensive stadium and is located on a piece of land 3.5 times as large as Disneyland. It will encompass an entertainment complex made up of retail and business districts surrounded by parks, luxury hotels, a live music venue, and multiple dining options. The capstones to this massive project are the NFL Network studios and the Hollywood Park Casino. After all, why go to Vegas when you can go to Inglewood?

Atlanta and Los Angeles frequently mirror each other, but in different ways. Atlanta’s stadium has been envisioned with attention to sophistication, culture and retaining the identity of the city and its inhabitants, while the Los Angeles stadium is unfolding with the same bling and flamboyance of Hollywood red-carpet events.

If the first similarity between these dueling cities is their state-of-the-art stadiums, the second is the ubiquitous theme songs by Southerners Hank Williams Jr. and Carrie Underwood.

On that literal and metaphorical note, the Southern Grits Blitz just trumped the Left Coast bling. See ya on the fields!
