In 1979, when a little book titled Atlanta at Home was published to serve as a benefit for Egleston hospital, a landmark residence designed in 1939 by Philip Shutze graced its cover. Fast forward 33 years and that home is being published again—in this month’s issue (beginning on page 92). Long before renovations began, the new homeowners called upon experts in architecture, landscape architecture and interior design to not only make the house work for a 21stcentury family of six, but also to respect its heritage. The result is a house that honors both Shutze’s original design and the homeowners who came before them. However, this house is no museum. Although it’s filled with beautiful things, nothing is too precious —it is a living, breathing thing that has never been full of more life. Modern HISTORY Bon vivant Tony Conway transforms a legendary Buckhead property into a new spot for special events Tony Conway is a busy man. In addition to being the celebrated mastermind of A Legendary Event, one of the city’s premier special events companies, he is fast at work ushering in a new era of style and elan at the former Anthony’s. Located in the heart of Buckhead, this new venue—3109 Piedmont Estate and Gardens— promises to bridge the allure of Old Atlanta with the modern-day amenities required by today’s cosmopolitan clientele. Amid a flurry of last-minute selections and fi nal touches, Conway took a few minutes to answer our questions about the property. The events arm of your company, A Legendary Event, produces everything from cocktail parties to grand galas. How did the idea for 3109 Piedmont Estate and
Gardens (“Estate”) come about? I have been looking for
another venue in the city to hold events for a couple of years. When this opportunity came up, I knew it would be perfect for restoration—a three-acre landmark in the heart of Buckhead. We call it a legendary location! What excites you the most about Estate? For A Legendary Event, this new venue will offer us the opportunity to give our guests another option in the Buckhead area for weddings and events. I am also excited that we are doing a great job in preserving this 1797 antebellum home. What kind of events can Estate accommodate? Estate is proving to be the perfect location for the wedding industry as well as the corporate event. With 14,000 overall square feet of space, the venue can host up to 350

I like to say that Estate is for weddings, events and moments in between. “Moments in between”—we love that. Why now? Although Atlanta has some amazing event venues, there is always the need for more event space. What types of services are you offering? Valet parking, catering, event design, floral design and entertainment. In addition to the storied history of the property, which dates back to the 1700s, what sets Estate apart from other venues in town? I think the three acres are amaz-
ing. What Ed Castro Landscape is doing to enhance the property will be wonderful. The residential salons that Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams are creating on the second floor are amazing, and Bill Lowe of Bill Lowe Gallery has selected wonderful pieces for Estate. The

Ready for TAKEOFF The Atlanta History Center kicks off the holiday season with a celebration of the world’s cultures “Passport to Celebrations,” the Atlanta History Center’s newest event, features global style with a Southern accent. This two-month-long display of holiday tablescapes depicts cultural traditions around the world. Opening November 14 and continuing through the end of December, the event—chaired by Debbie Neese and Karen Spiegel, and supported by the Members Guild—incorporates stylish table decor and settings interpreting secular and religious holidays around the world. Grouping holidays according to the season, guests will enter the Goldstein Gallery to visually engage the harvest festivals: Thanksgiving, Succoth and the African Festival of Yams. Holidays reflecting the winter solstice— Christmas, Chanukah and Diwali—will continue the voyage around the globe to include Venetian and Brazilian Carnivals; Chinese, Ethiopian and Persian New Year’s; as well as the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival, Buddha’s Birthday, Ramadan and Dias de Muertes. Also on view will be the Art Wall, featuring works by international artists now living in Georgia, curated by Marianne Lambert and her daughter, Anne Lambert Tracht. Among the 35 designers creating vignettes and tablescapes are Dan Belman and Randy Korando, Ann Davis and Martha Reeves, Courtney Giles, Raymond Goins, Suzanne Kasler, Carter Kay and Nancy Hooff, Patricia McLean, Bill Musso, John Oetgen, Barbara Roos and Chris Macksey, Melanie Turner, Beth Webb and Barbara Westbrook. “Passport to Celebrations” opens November 14, with a gala featuring a cocktail buffet of international fare and live music. Baker’s latest book offers a snapshot of his design work from across the United States From an incredible Adirondack-style house in Cashiers, North Carolina, to a refined beach house in Jacksonville, Florida, Atlanta residential designer William T. Baker’s latest book, Great American Homes: Volume II (Images Publishing, $90), offers a survey of his recent work from around the country. Unlike his previous books—including New Classicists and the first volume of Great American Homes—which captured a number of luxury residences in Atlanta, this second installment of an eventual three-part series showcases a number of estate homes, vacation properties and accessory buildings, such as a sports pavilion in Indiana. Not only does this latest book capture the evolution of Baker’s nearly 30-year residential design career; it also shows the changes that have taken place in American architecture and home building over nearly three decades. “The message of the three volumes is that the American

Years ago, I swore up and down that I would never host Thanksgiving dinner again. Mind you, my decision was made after that disastrous holiday when I burned the Butterball, Mr. von Habersham got drunk on Beaujolais Nouveau, my brother Bubba choked on a Brussel sprout (he survived), and my not-so-adorable niece and nephew took permanent markers to my Scalamandré curtains. Ever since that debacle, I have enjoyed many a solo Thanksgiving dinner at The Colonnade, where I always order the turkey and dressing with a stiff martini. Now that’s something for which I like to give thanks. This year, however, I have had to renege on that promise. The von Habersham clan is coming to town, and they expect yours truly to serve them a feast. I’m going to have to put out a gracious plenty on the buffet table alongside my Herend Rothschild Bird china and Francis I silver. But read my lips: No scorched turkeys. I’m going to rely on others to do the cooking, and who better to help me prepare this all-American meal than the latest all-American food craze: food trucks! I admit that before my first visit to the Atlanta Food Truck Park, I assumed it was going to be similar to getting a hot dog at the Dairy Queen window. Boy, was I wrong. Who knew that one could order fish and chips, Cuban sandwiches, chicken and waffles and even pudding, and all from such cute little trucks, too? It’s a veritable smorgasbord situated next to I-75 on Howell Mill Road. With so many options, it’s going to be hard to narrow down my Thanksgiving menu. Should I stick to Southern food and order from the barbecue or mac ‘n’ cheese truck? What about giving my meal some international flair with Asian-style fish tacos or kabobs? I’m banking on King of Pops to have their Banana Puddingflavored popsicles that I can serve for dessert. Do you think any of the trucks’ chefs plan to cook a whole turkey? Decisions, decisions. The one thing I do know with certainty is that no matter which food truck dishes I serve to my guests, it won’t involve my calling the Butterball Turkey Helpline!

November 16 – December 9, 2012 As you meander through the hilly and sometimes hidden streets of Atlanta’s prestigious Chastain Park, you pass by stables, cyclists, runners, both modern and classic homes, and sometimes a treasure that causes you to pull over and just look. This year, on Dudley Lane, you have such a moment. With exteriors of stone and brick, multiple entrances, peaked rooflines and graceful columns, this home has the feeling of an updated New England farmhouse, welcoming and comfortable while still elegant and inspiring. French doors lead to a tiered pool area, visible from the kitchen and breakfast room. The first-floor rooms, designed for both entertaining and intimacy, are showered in light, with custom floors and ceilings. We welcome this newest neighbor to Chastain Park and to Atlanta. The Christmas House will be open to the public for tours Thursday through Sunday, beginning Friday, November 16, and ending December 9. Traditional highlights of the annual Christmas House include the Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts Holiday Boutique, the Holiday Tabletop display, Product Showcase and ongoing programs and seminars. A Champagne and Candlelight Opening Night Party will be held Thursday, November 15, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Opening Night tickets are available for $125 per person at AtlantaChristmasHouse.com.

D
esigners often find themselves playing marital counselor or psychologist, but diplomat? In a way, the latter might accurately describe Atlanta designer Robert Brown’s role when decorating a young family’s Buckhead home. It wasn’t that the homeowners were at odds. Far from it. Rather, Brown was charged with negotiating a peace accord between the home’s classical architecture and the homeowners’ cache of ultra-contemporary art. As Brown succinctly puts it, “The challenge was in coming to the middle ground.” Because the owners’ art was to be the focal point of the interiors, everything was chosen to enhance the collection. Notes Brown, “If art is a major consideration, you have to make sure that you think of what the backdrop will be.” In this case, the designer created a neutral background by painting most of the home’s walls chalky white, a color often used in museums. And yet, fabrics and accessories in shades of dusty pastels were introduced to soften the “sturdy” architecture and bold artwork. Furniture presented another opportunity for Brown to “bridge the gap” between old and new. In the living room, traditional an-
tiques—a holdover from the owners’ previous house—stand alongside contemporary, clean-lined furnishings. Nowhere, though, is this generational mix of furnishings more apparent than in the master bedroom, where classical furniture shapes and an elegant folding screen mix with a modern Lucite cocktail table and a soft, contemporary color palette. The husband’s study is where Brown’s sensitivity to balance and harmony proved especially valuable. Taking an iconoclastic approach to decorating a classic, dark wood-paneled room, Brown bypassed the expected traditional furnishings in favor of contemporary pieces that don’t compete with the room’s eclectic art. “The upholstery and furnishings could stand on their own, and yet they don’t overpower what the art is doing,” he explains. While a mix of such diverse elements might seem incompatible, Brown succeeded in striking a most attractive compromise. Designer Robert Brown was charged with negotiating a peace accord between the home’s classical architecture and the homeowners’ cache of contemporary art. As Brown succinctly puts it, “The challenge was in coming to the middle ground.” The result is a striking home where the two effortlessly coexist.
Clean-lined furniture, modern lamps and a painting by artist Jimmy O’Neal provide contemporary counterpoints to the study’s traditional paneled walls. Brown chose a Rogers & Goffigon blue-gray plaid fabric for the sofa, a nod to the husband’s English roots. ONCE UPON A TIME, Atlanta designer Bill Cook decided that his mountain home was just too small. He wanted to be able to share the magical feeling he had every time he escaped to his Highlands, North Carolina, cottage with more friends and family. So Cook decided to tear down his post-war weekend home (Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, August 2005) and expand up until it was just right. “When I cross the state line, I feel bathed in the green light through the trees, and relief and relaxation wash over me—like I’m stepping into a storybook,” says Cook. “I wanted to take that feeling even further with the design of the house.” The designer worked with architect Michael Faust, and the early plans were inspired, in part, by Grimms’ Fairy Tales with exaggerated pitched roofs and more ornate details. Cook drew back a bit. “I didn’t want people to drive up and feel like they were going to be baked into cookies,” Cook laughs. “But I did want the home to look conjured from the imagination, like a dream.” So fairy tale images were blended with the local architectural 85

influences of the Appalachian region. “Dutch and Scottish details were added as a nod to his family heritage,” says Faust. The result is Laurel Nest, a home tucked into the hillside with exhaustive attention to detail inside and out. Confi ned to rebuild on the previous home’s footprint, Faust took the opportunity to vault the foyer and second story in perfect proportion to the house, which suffuses the residence with airiness and light. Cook salvaged an array of objects from the demolition, reusing kitchen cabinets, light fi xtures, wisteria vines and laurel branches—anything that might work with the new concept. Then he and Faust set out to fi nd quality reclaimed wood and materials indigenous to the area, giving the new house instant character. Stonework was designed to look as if incorporated from the ruins of an old house. The hallway into the living room is a grotto that appears as a natural extension of the stone above the mantel. “I didn’t want to overkill the stonework,” said Cook. “This is not the Flintstones’ house.” Cook was determined to be in by Christmas and started moving in while the paintbrushes were still going because there was a lot to unpack. 86

right With Scottish blood on his father’s side and a proud history of Scottish culture in the Highlands area, Cook decided to recreate the look of an old Scottish manor for his master bedroom. “It’s my favorite room,” Cook says. “I love its comfort and luxury.” below Faust highlighted the vaulted ceiling in the space with beams, painted and stained wood paneling, and dormers, which let the light stream in.
“I did edit my old collection,” he says. “Then I gathered during the building process. Now, if I fi nd something new, I have to pull something to switch it out or the house would be bursting at the seams.” While designing, Cook was inspired by the personalities of friends and family, even the memory of one of his most beloved dogs, Diesel. But overall, he aimed for a balance between luxury and comfort. His guests had to feel invited into the fantasy. Humble pieces mix with fi ne antiques, and dogs and people alike are encouraged to put up their feet and relax. “I want visitors to be able to peer inside that feeling of loosing your way in the woods and fi nding yourself in a place of refuge.” The layers, the history and the patina that fi ll the house may be the story, but it’s the welcomed flow of friends and family that creates the fairy tale. HERE’S A GREAT SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY that comes with owning a Philip Trammell Shutze-designed house. One of America’s finest classicists, he designed residences from the Swan House at the Atlanta History Center to the Italian Baroque Calhoun estate in Buckhead, each boasting a level of craftsmanship and grandeur that have become part and parcel of Atlanta’s collective architectural heritage. In the rare case that a Shutze-designed house changes ownership (many, like this one, change hands without officially landing on the market), it’s with bated breath that Atlanta’s modern-day tastemakers hope a historically sensitive renovation will ensue. Indeed, the current owners of the Shutze-designed PattersonCarr House, a 1939 Colonial Revival on Northside Drive, recall project manager James Jordan of Pak Heydt & Associates breathing a visible sigh of relief when he witnessed part of the interior design installation—two years after the couple embarked on a renovation of the historic home. (As a young man, Jordan had spent time at 95

the house; maintaining a renovation appropriate to the standards of previous owner, Atlanta grande dame Anne Carr, was imperative to him, as well.) “This house is complex in its subtleties,” explains Birminghambased interior designer Tammy Connor, who worked in conjunction with Yong Pak to revive the home’s glory days. Those subtleties would require calling on artisans with encyclopedic knowledge of Shutze’s nuances as well as that of Athos Menaboni, the Italian-born painter commissioned by the architect to create a mural for the foyer which, due to water damage, was not exactly ready for its close-up when the current owners moved in. Because this refined farm-style home was originally designed by Shutze to have the appearance of being built over time, modifying the floorplan and putting on an addition was a no-brainer, says Connor. In fact, an untrained eye might find it difficult to discern where the original floorplan starts and stops. The owners, parents to four teenagers, set out to modernize the house for their busy lifestyle, blowing out the back of the house to make room for a combined kitchen, family and breakfast room, along with a fourth bedroom upstairs and a new master closet and bath. Outside, they were particularly sensitive to the grounds’ luscious 96

The original kitchen was more utilitarian. The renovated space— which now includes a new kitchen, breakfast area and family room, all of which open up to each other—needed to suit the modern needs of a busy family of six. “This is the part of the house the family really lives in,” says Connor. Windows—painstakingly rebuilt to imitate the originals, with shutters that fold neatly into pockets in the window jambs—were left unadorned, as the shutters provide for privacy.
gardens, the product of previous owner Anne Carr—a longtime champion of horticulture and founder of the Cherokee Garden Library at the Atlanta History Center. Though they opted to remove tennis courts to make room for a pool and poolhouse, the owners worked with landscape architect Richard Anderson to transplant boxwoods, hydrangeas and more elsewhere on the property. One of the most endearing things about this house, says Connor—in addition to its harmonious proportions—is the constant conversation between inside and out. “The home was designed on an axis so that the surrounding landscape and formal gardens could be seen from various focal points inside the house,” she says. The designer established a natural, earthy palette for the interiors that would not only invite the outdoor gardens in, but also allow the home’s spectacular architectural bones to regain their rightful place. And that desire to respect, not overshadow, the estate’s aesthetic integrity will prove the home’s enduring legacy. For years, the current homeowners had admired the house from afar; the wife would drive by with her grandmother when the cherry trees were in bloom and the husband, who has a degree in architecture, had always been fascinated by it. Renovating the house to fit their needs was a dream come true.
In front of the estate’s gun house—which contains a living area, bar, office and recreation room—is a vegetable garden. “One of the biggest compliments we’ve received from friends of Mrs. Carr is that she would have loved what we did,” says the homeowner of the property’s meticulously designed gardens, which she “inherited” from of one of Atlanta’s most devoted horticulturists, Anne Carr. A pair of tennis courts was removed from the property to make room for a pool and poolhouse. Jill Biskin, the artist commissioned to restore the Menaboni painting inside, was also responsible for creating the swimming pool design, inspired by a David Hockney painting. “It’s extremely modern and not at all what you would expect would go on the property,” says the homeowner of the hand-laid tile “scribble,” but they couldn’t be more pleased with the result. opposite Connor, who received the Shutze Award from the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) earlier this year for her work on another Shutze project, says this refined farm-style home was originally designed to have the appearance of being built over time—making it the perfect candidate for a sensitive renovation. 102

AST APRIL, A GROUP OF ATLANTA DESIGNERS and architects traveled to northern Africa for an annual conference that’s held for professionals within the design community. The Atlanta contingent—of which there were about a dozen— joined other members of the Design Leadership Network from across the United States for this year’s event, which was held in Marrakech, Morocco. As a precursor to the event in Marrakech, Marmi Natural Stone, one of the sponsors, escorted a handful of Atlantans on a trip through Egypt. In addition to touring the company’s facilities in Cairo and some of its marble quarries, the group crisscrossed the area over the course of five days—from the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Karnak to the Great Pyramids. At the official Design Leadership Summit in Marrakech, members participated in four days of design-related lectures, seminars and networking events, along with architectural tours, sightseeing and guided shopping tours of the souks within the city’s medina. Social events included cocktails at Jardin Marjorelle (the former home of Yves Saint Laurent), a grand nighttime feast in the desert and in-
timate dinners in private riads. Optional excursions included a trip to Fez or a visit to the Atlas Mountains, where a traditional Moroccan tea ritual in a local casbah inspired our story back in Atlanta. A Moroccan tea service, which often begins with the washing of hands in orange blossom water, is one of the highest gestures of hospitality. “Green tea is steeped with mint and sugar, and its preparation in uniquely shaped pots and glasses has been elevated to an art form,” says Atlanta designer Beth Webb, one of the travelers on this excursion and the creator of our Moroccan-inspired environment. “I love the blend of African and French cultures there. In America, Moroccan design has been around us all along. In the past it was more subconscious—a plethora of color and geometric patterns—but there’s certainly more of an awareness of it now simply because we live in a global economy, and Marrakech is such an international city.” Editor’s Note: Designers Beth Webb, Suzanne Kasler and Barbara Westbrook—attendees on this trip—are among the 35 designers participating in the Atlanta History Center’s “Passport to Celebrations” event, which opens November 14. Table Talk For the holidays, Marcia sets a scene for beauty and a tone for beautiful remembrances Thanksgiving is here again, and I think it remains the holiday that we all can celebrate equally. Many of us have lost the parents who hosted us year after year, but now we must take our parents’ rituals and come up with our own. My family liked to engage in the hustle and bustle of cleaning the never-used family silver and “company” china, and then run pell-mell into the woods for a suitably fall-ish centerpiece of pine cones and holly in our untended yard. My Momma passed away last year, but we still all gather at her house. After years of contributing a mere casserole of indeterminate ingredients (topped with the mandatory canned fried onion rings), I’ve installed myself as the Thanksgiving Madam and cook the turkey my way. I buy it. I coax my near and dear into bringing the rest of the food, except the Sister Schubert’s delicious yeast rolls. I act like they’re homemade. We still have Momma’s silver and her china, and the mismatched Waterford crystal. Our Thanksgiving is about her. We give thanks for our Momma; we laugh and we cry and we sing Irish folk songs, playing Daddy’s newly tuned guitar and her grand piano. We keep their love of life alive. We give thanks for the beauty of southern Novembers, and Alabama and Georgia football, and our children make their own memories of us.
