p p y, g y y Baldwin once said. A master of scale, proportion and editing, Mr. Baldwin’s own work was also impeccably tailored—without looking contrived, and that’s a balance not easily achieved. Squaring comfort with beauty, though, is exactly what the interior designers and architects behind this issue’s two homes stories (beginning on page 98) have accomplished. For a new, old English-inspired abode in Tuxedo Park, a collaboration between architect Peter Block and interior designer Joel Kelly resulted in a home that feels collected, timeworn, and above all, livable—no small feat for a house that’s 7,000 square feet. And, at the center of Buckhead, inside one of the city’s most notable high-rises, Robert Grayson, Andrew Harris and Harrison Design Associates transformed a three-bedroom model home at The Residences at the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta, into an artful, energetic space that’s as polished as it is stylish; yet nothing feels impersonal or too precious. Isn’t that the ultimate balance? Elizabeth Ralls

INTRODUCING:

THE FIONA SLEEPER COMFORT FROM DAY TO NIGHT, OPEN TO CLOSED In our quest to design the most perfect sleeper, we reverse-engineered our creative process. Rather than starting with a sofa and designing backwards, our forward-thinking strategy elevated the style and comfort factor to create a new class of sleepers as collections of one.

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi von Habersham THANKSGIVING IS QUICKLY APPROACHING, while Hanukkah and Christmas seem fast on its heels. For many of us, this means that our formal china, sterling silver flatware and crystal stemware will emerge from dusty hibernation to see the light of day. If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t use your fi ne tableware on a daily basis, thanks to the hand-washing it usually requires. Life is too short to stand over the sink with a bottle of Palmolive every night, so I’ll continue to eat my Stouffer’s lasagnas off plates that can be thrown into the dishwasher, thank you very much. Sadly, though, I fear that the pendulum has swung too far in the direction of ultra-casual entertaining, and formal tableware is now avoided like the plague. Many people no longer seem interested in collecting the elegant china and flatware that were once hallmarks of well-appointed homes. Some don’t see the point of having fi ne china if it’s used on holidays and special occasions only. Others refuse to accept gifts of family silver because it requires polishing. Can you imagine passing up your late grandmother’s set of Francis I flatware just because it needs a little polishing every now and then? Objects of beauty often require occasional maintenance, but that’s no reason to forgo them altogether. And really, what’s the fun in setting your Thanksgiving table with the same china and flatware that you use the other 364 days of the year? Where’s the sense of occasion? And why go to the trouble of cooking that glazed turkey and sweet potato casserole if you’re only going to serve it on your weeknight dishes? No, holidays call for extra effort, even if that entails hand-washing one’s dishes. So, come on people. Put your Mottahedeh china, Tiffany & Co. fl atware, Waterford crystal and, yes, your grandmother’s Francis I to good use, and set a Thanksgiving table to remember. Your family and guests might be so bowled over by the classic beauty of your table that they’ll fight over who gets to wash the dishes. Well…one can dream.

WHERE TO GO

THANKSGIVING DINNER

Carve the stress out of preparing a holiday feast with these local dining alternatives >> Start a new tradition this November with an elegant Thanksgiving day brunch at the RITZ-CARTLON, ATLANTA. In addition to its sensuous smattering of breakfast foods,

smoked seafood, fine cheeses and charcuterie options, the downtown property’s special holiday menu includes peach glazed free-range turkey, buttery fall root vegetables, pimento cheese farfalle pasta and more. Top it all off with sweet selections such as caramel pecan pie or fig panna cotta. For reservations, call (404) 221-6550. >> Diners looking for traditional Thanksgiving fare—without the prepration or clean-up— should reserve a table at one of Atlanta’s oldest eateries, HORSERADISH GRILL, for an

authentic Southern prix-fixe meal with classic trappings: velvety mashed potatoes, green beans, biscuits, pecan pie and, of course, turkey. The restaurant’s white-chocolate-croissant bread pudding is a holiday favorite. For reservations, call (404) 255-7277.

THE SCOOP Under its iconic blue dome, the recently renovated HYATT REGENCY ATLANTA on Peachtree Street now boasts a rooftop bee garden that’s home to thousands of bees. Two hives of queens and workers will produce honey each year that will eventually be served at the hotel’s two restaurants and be sold in its lobby marketplace. The bees are part of a diverse rooftop garden that grows herbs, tomatoes, peppers, vegetables and flowers that are planted in soil enriched with compost from the hotel’s eco-friendly food waste program. atlanta regency.hyatt.com

>> Solo diners will want to reserve a seat at ROSEBUD’s bar for a heap of the “Holiday Orphan” plate. Think turkey, ham and traditional scrumptious sides that highlight the fresh bounty of the season. Last seating is at 6 p.m. For reservations, call (404) 347-9747. >> Bring the fresh, gourmet goodness of STAR PROVISIONS to the Thanksgiving table

In Season

Local chefs dish on their favorite QUINCE creations

“I have a beautiful quince bush at my home in Serenbe, and I love to sauté thinly sliced quince in butter with freshly ground allspice and kosher salt. Then, I take the mixture and place it under the skin of a chicken breast and spoon the remaining seasoned butter on top. Place it in the oven and bake at 350 degrees until it's juicy. This also works well with quail or dove.” –Marie Nygren, The Farmhouse at Serenbe

20

“Quince chutney pairs well with venison or game birds. Simmer simple syrup in a sauce pan with Star anise and minced orange peel, and then add in diced quince and cook until quince just starts to get tender. Next, strain off the syrup and set the quince aside. Return the syrup to the stove and reduce until it thickens somewhat. Once everything is cool, combine both components and keep refrigerated for optimal flavor.” –Jay Swift, 4th & Swift

“I love to pair the mysteriousness of quince with the richness of duck. Pan-roasted duck breast with caramelized quince is a delicious dish. Start by peeling, coring and poaching the quince in a water and sugar mixture with a cinnamon stick, allspice, vanilla, black pepper and a halved lemon for about an hour. Remove from the poaching liquid and allow it to cool completely. Using some of the reserved drippings from the duck breast, sauté the sliced quince in duck fat and serve with Pinot Noir.” –Doug Turbush, Seed Kitchen & Bar

▲ Heat up your next experience at Ford Fry’s KING + DUKE by reserving a counter seat next to the restaurant’s 24-foot open hearth. A chance to get up close and personal to the culinary action, the view comes with a special rotating five-course tasting menu prepared by executive chef Joe Schafer and takes its cue from fresh, seasonal ingredients. $75 per person, 6 & 8:45 p.m. seatings. Reservations required. (404) 477-3500; kinganddukeatl.com The local chapter of national non-profit MEALS ON WHEELS is hosting its 26th annual black-tie fundraiser at St. Regis Atlanta. NEW ENGLAND PEARL Thirty miles from the mainland, Nantucket boasts a blustery island charm WHETHER ARRIVING BY SEA OR SKY to the tiny land mass of Nantucket, a fi rst glimpse of the island’s sweeping beaches is enough to signal that you’re approaching something special. Though its cedar-shingled, weather-beaten cottages and quaint allure may recall Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket (an island, county and town all in one) reveals a charming character that’s steeped in tradition and all its own. Declared a historic district in 1966, Nantucket hearkens back to a quieter era; stoplights, neon signs and chain stores are noticeably absent among its cobblestone streets. In summer months, the population swells from 10,000 to 55,000 as sea- and scene-loving tourists who vacation on the island descend for the season. For all its beauty in the glittering sun, Nantucket is just as exquisite in the winter months, particularly during the island’s Nantucket Noel festival that takes place from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. Hundreds of Christmas trees line the streets while residents bedeck homes and businesses—and even the iconic Brant Point Lighthouse—with holiday decor. But no matter which season you visit, Nantucket’s palpable magic is only enhanced by a stay at one of its many luxe lodging options. In the very center of town, the stately Jared Coffi n House—the fi rst mansion ever built on the island, dating to 1845—offers graceful accommodations and easy access to the 24

clockwise, from top right The historic Jared Coffin House hotel was once home to one of Nantucket’s most successful ship owners. The Cottages & Lofts at the Boat Basin offer prime waterfront accomodations. Guests of the White Elephant can enjoy lazy afternoons on its lush lawn. The whimsical ivy-covered facade of popular women’s clothing boutique Milly & Grace adds to the island’s picturesque charm. Local favorite Brant Point Grill serves up gourmet cuisine at the White Elepant. opposite The beautiful blue waters of the Nantucket Boat Basin cater to the largest megayachts on the east coast. Stunning views and award-winning dining go hand-in-hand at The Wauwinet’s Topper’s restaurant.

NANTUCKET MUST-DO’S Take a step back in time at the Nantucket Whaling Museum that pays homage to the island’s once-prominent whaling industry, immortalized in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.

diverse shopping and dining scene. In a prime spot along Nantucket Harbor, just steps from downtown, sits the White Elephant. This landmark has evolved from seaside cottages to a sophisticated hotel with an impressive repertoire of rooms, suites, garden cottages and an in-town loft. It’s also home to the island’s premier steak-and-seafood restaurant, Brant Point Grill. The White Elephant Village, a stone’s throw from its sister hotel, boasts spacious residence suites and earns bonus points as one of the few hotels on Nantucket that’s equipped with a heated outdoor pool, complete with private cabanas and an ice-cream cart. If embarking on a sailboat or yacht isn’t in your cards, opt for a shingled cottage perched right above the harbor wharves with water swishing below. The Cottages & Lofts at the Boat Basin offer pet-friendly accommodations in a setting reminiscent of a seaside fishing village. But if you’re looking for complete quietude, look no further than island stalwart The Wauwinet. Ideally located on the northeast corner of Nantucket, the historic hotel’s unparalleled vistas are best enjoyed on one if its signature wicker lawn chaises with a glass of bubbly in hand. If you manage to pull yourself away from the stunning landscape views, be sure to take advantage of the hotel’s lobster excursions, surfcasting lessons and scenic off-road drives. nantucketislandresorts.com

CARIBBEAN CRUSH CASA DE CAMPO MAY BE BEST KNOWN for the heartwrenchingly difficult but breathtakingly beautiful Pete Dyedesigned Teeth of the Dog golf course, but world-class, oceanside golf is but one of many exceptional recreational pursuits drawing visitors to this sprawling, exclusive Dominican Republic retreat. A longtime favorite holiday destination for Europeans, Americans are just catching on to the appeal of the “DR,” as in-theknow travelers refer to it. Size-wise, it’s a little more than double the dimensions of New Hampshire—but with nearly 90 direct fl ights from major U.S. cities each day into the country’s three international airports (La Romana, Santo Domingo and Punta Cana), tourism is booming. The 7,000-acre resort in La Romana, often referred to as the “Hamptons of the Caribbean” features not only a hotel, resort and exclusive residential community, but also endless ways to summon your inner adventurer thanks to a 245-acre skeet-shooting center, 63 holes of championship golf (including seven seaside holes hugging the shore), a polo and equestrian club, tennis center, yacht club and marina. Arriving by sea, in fact, is not uncommon. Casa de Campo’s 370-slip La Marina is known in yachting circles for its quietude and privacy, while the adjacent Mediterranean-style village and Piazza Portofi no provide entertainment and shelter in the form of restaurants, cafes, shops, nightlife and apartments. 26

Pete Dye’s indomitable Teeth of the Dog beckons golfers across the globe.

At Casa de Campo, the easiest way to relax in style—and completely let go—is to book a private, open-air villa (53 villas are available throughout the resort). Choose from three- to tenbedroom homes complete with furnished living and dining areas, fully equipped kitchens (includes maid and butler service; private chef upon request), private patios with outdoor lounge areas, lush gardens and a pool and private bedrooms with air conditioning, baths and TVs. Each villa comes with two four-passenger golf carts to transport guests from their home away from home to their desired location. Couples looking for romance, families with kids in tow and rebel rousers searching for vibrant nightlife options will each fi nd something to suit their needs. The Beach Club by Le Cirque on the private Minitas Beach offers tropical cuisine with enviable, calming views, while the 16th-century Mediterranean-inspired Altos de Chavon village features live entertainment and a variety of restaurants and bars, in addition to art galleries, boutiques and more. La Casita and Chinois, both restaurants at La Marina, offer fare from fresh seafood to sushi, steaks and pasta. Explorers, adventurers, escapists and connoisseurs alike can customize the Casa de Campo experience to fit their personal style and vacation needs. With luxe options catering to every whim, it couldn’t be easier to enjoy the good life. casadecampo.com.do 27

LOWCOUNTRY LUXURY Indugle your every whim at the haute Charleston Place Hotel CHARLESTON HAS ALWAYS BEEN a place of quintessential Southern hospitality. Over the decades, this venerable port city has continued to be a favorite destination with tourists from all over the world who wish to experience the South as they’ve always imagined it. The center of attention—downtown Charleston—pays regard to its history but has reinvented itself just enough to stay chic and relevant. At the heart of the downtown district is the iconic Charleston Place Hotel. Considered relatively new by Charleston standards, the 28-year-old property is perfectly suited to the history of its surroundings. Elegant grandeur and a sense of sophisticated restraint pervade the hotel’s dazzling lobby, restaurants and lounges. A part of the well-appointed Orient-Express collection of hotels, Charleston Place occupies almost a full city block at the epicenter of downtown activity. Its grand staircase and bustling lobby are flanked by retail shopping concourses—stretching all the way from Meeting to King Streets—that accommodate luxe boutiques such as Gucci, St. John and Louis Vuitton along with the hotel’s restaurants, Palmetto Cafe and Charleston Grill. The sunny Palmetto Cafe is a favorite garden-style breakfast and lunch spot, where cheerful service—guided by vigilant general manager Michael Barto—and American Lowcountry 28

culinary traditions rule. Regional dishes take on an international twist, such as Shrimp Poke with avocado, a light caper vinaigrette and crisp wontons. To present the regularly changing menu in a really interesting and fun way, chef de cuisine Andrew Coins has classified his appetizers, entrées and desserts into four distinct categories: Cafe Classics, Ocean, Range and Farm. Long considered a big-name restaurant, Charleston Grill seamlessly blends ambience, cuisine and service that have earned the establishment its many awards (Forbes Four-Star Dining Award, AAA Four-Diamond Award, two Wine Spectator Best Of Awards and Nation’s Restaurant News Fine Dining Hall of Fame, just to name a few). In the kitchen, the talented triumvirate of chefs—executive chef Michelle Weaver, executive sous chef Andy Champion and pastry chef Emily Cookson—have created a menu that explores a breadth of influences and, like sister restaurant Palmetto Cafe, they have also grouped dishes into four concise categories: Pure, Lush, Southern and Cosmopolitan. Each section expresses distinctive fl avors and ingredients. Says Chef Weaver of her style, “I’m Southern-grown with a global palate,” and her gutsy yet sensible menus reflect someone who’s traveled well— and taken good notes. Charleston Grill’s longtime manager, Mickey Bakst (whose

popularity in Charleston could easily win him the mayoral election), is proud of his team and delivers an overall guest experience worthy of the restaurant’s accolades. Bakst is equally proud of the meaty 45-page wine list with more than 1,600 brilliantly organized selections that is surprisingly easy to navigate. With so many choices, wine director and sommelier Rick Rubel, one of the few sommeliers of his level in the city, along with assistant wine director Andrew Marshall, are at the ready to help with the perfect pairing. To accompany our light appetizers of yellow tomato gazpacho with poached shrimp and avocado and Charleston Grille crab cake with shrimp, Rubel chose a J.S. Dauvissant, Saint-Pierre, 2008 Chablis—crisp and fl inty and perfect with both dishes. Entrées of rabbit with pork belly and Brunswick stew and a plate of grilled wild Salmon, English peas and horseradishlime butter matched well with a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, 2008 Alexana—earthy, dense and again flawless with each. Charleston Place is the type of hotel that, once you check into your magnificent guest room, you will never want to leave. Room interiors are elegant and richly decorated without being fussy and overdone. Understated tapestries, chintz and damasks provide a sense of history amidst a soft, earth tone-based color palette. Works by local artists enliven walls, and a star-medallion stenciled on each room’s entry foyer by local artisan Karl Beckwith Smith III boldly greets you. You’ll also want to stay a long time to experience as many treatments as you possibly can in the European-style Spa at Charleston Place. Spa Director Annette Sandford-Lopez greets everyone with such enthusiasm and pride, it’s as though she is welcoming you into her own home. A 10-page menu of services ensures something for everyone, from forward-thinking skin treatments to lavish scrubs and wraps, healing massages and even special Spa Kids services. Spa amenities include hydro-kinetic Vichy water treatments, a 50-foot heated horizon-edge saltwater pool with retractable roof, Jacuzzi, dry sauna, a full-service weight and fitness room and a full range of toiletries. And, if (on the off chance) you decide to venture outside your Charleston Place sanctuary, let the city continue to wrap you in ultimate Southern hospitality like nowhere else on earth. charlestonplace.com; orient-express.com

The elegant lobby features an “open arms” staircase and Murano glass chandelier. A grand outdoor water fountain greets hotel guests. Heated to a comfortable 84 degrees, the rooftop pool is popular for fi tness and socializing year-round. opposite Open nightly for dinner, the Charleston Grill is a local culinary landmark. Chef Michelle Weaver gives traditional flavors a global verve. Favorite Charleston Grill entrées include the Kurobuta pork chop and Frogmore stew.

BREATHTAKING IS A WORD that’s often overused, yet it becomes the de facto expression when visiting New Zealand. Each new view and each new experience far exceeds the previous. And just when you think you’ve seen it all—including otherworldly fauna and flora and prehistoric landscapes—there’s a new (breathtaking) surprise right around the corner. And this time of year (fall and winter here, spring and summer there), offers a pictureperfect opportunity to see the country at its best. With its tailored furnishings and welcoming demeanor, the main lodge at Kauri Cliffs affords 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean and the Cavalli Islands that dot Matauri Bay. Every suite at the property, housed in cottages, features gas fi replaces and has its own private porch that overlooks the Pacific. Activities range from strolling along one of three beaches to a round (or two) of golf. Fifteen holes view the ocean, six of which are played alongside cliffs that plunge to the sea. At the resort’s spa—where guests can choose among treatments such as the waterfall massage or kiwi mud wrap—each treatment room opens onto a private patio. Off property, guests may opt for a guided tour of the famed Ninety Mile Beach or an afternoon of horseback riding along the shore. A private helicopter charter can be arranged to get you from the resort to Auckland (or vice versa) in about an hour (versus about 3 hours and 45 minutes by car). Not only does it save time, but it also offers a birdseye view of New Zealand’s varied topographi-

cal charms. Beaches, soaring seaside cliffs, dormant volcanos and islands are all within a stone’s throw of Auckland’s urban skyline. With its rolling hills, temperate climate and surrounding winemaking region, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers at Hawke’s Bay might feel a bit like California wine country, yet unparalleled ocean views and a one-of-a-kind golf course are a reminder that this couldn’t be anywhere else but New Zealand. With a cluster of buildings that evoke a working farm, the lodge and cottages at Cape Kidnappers marry rustic architecture with stylish interior design. Activities are as varied as the scenery: extensive walking trails, tours of a gannet colony and ATV quad biking are just a few of the ways to discover the 6,000-acre working sheep and cattle farm. Dining in the lodge is an event in itself. More casual at breakfast and lunch, the dinner menu changes nightly and features New Zealand lamb and beef, as well as the fi nest local produce and seafood. There’s also a small, but bountiful, vegetable garden on the property. Off-site, there are more than 70 wineries; both short excursions and full-day tours can be arranged. Nestled at the edge of Lake Wakatipu at the base of the Remarkables mountain range, Matakauri Lodge seamlessly blends nature and design. Modern New Zealand cuisine is at home in the lodge amidst contemporary furnishings and large picture windows that frame the jaw-dropping mountain backdrop. The on-site spa offers a number of holistic treatments. Nearby, jet boating into the World Heritage area of Mt. Aspiring National Park with Dart River Jet Safaris offers an only-in-New Zealand experience. Fans of “The Lord of the Rings” can opt for tours to see where parts of the fi lm series were taped. Queenstown, a former mining town, is dubbed the adventure capital of New Zealand. But if paragliding, heli-skiing or bungee jumping seem overly stimulating, trout fishing, horseback riding or winery tours can be arranged as well, and are just as memorable. Also nearby is Arrowtown, an 1800s gold mining community, which has been restored and is home to a number of charming shops and restaurants worth browsing. kauricliffs.com; capekidnappers.com; matakauri.co.nz

WELCOME to Home for the Holidays, formerly known as the Christmas House. We are thrilled to have you join us this year as we have many exciting things to share. Home for the Holidays takes the tradition, the style, the dreams, the stories and the glamour of so many wonderful ways of living in Atlanta, and brings it all together—with a sprinkle of holiday magic on top. This year’s Colonial American-style showhouse by Harrison Design Associates on Blackland Road has a markedly graceful Southern charm and is an example of an estate home that feels as if it has been expanded over generations. Our new beneficiary, the Southeastern Horticultural Society, is a wonderful partner and you will see their involvement and influence throughout your experience. Our presenting sponsor and builder, Dovetail Homes, has not only built a home that is both spectacular and inviting, but has also employed sustainable practices throughout the home as a responsible community citizen and keeper of the environment. In addition to the showhouse this year, we’ve set out to create lasting lifestyle experiences for our guests. Don’t miss our Weekend Workshops, mini-seminars, kitchen garden and gift marketplace, all held throughout the home and gardens. We hope your Home for the Holidays experience will help you celebrate not only this magical season, but also great design, sustainability and our ever-evolving lifestyles. Happy holidays!

WELCOME As we put the finishing touches on this year’s Home for the Holidays pro-

gram, it is (ironically) early fall, and we are watching our interior designers measure and create; we are admiring Dovetail Homes as their talented craftsmen complete this beautiful estate from the ground up; and we are tirelessly working to create an exciting new holiday experience we expect to surprise, inspire and delight you. This year’s Home for the Holidays showhouse is so much more than a large, well-designed house filled with beautiful things (but my, oh my, what beautiful things they are!).

KATE BYARS

Our showhouse and marketplace brings together the collaboration of many minds—in board rooms, over coffee (and of course, wine), by email and by phone. We dreamed and we brainstormed and we collaborated, all in order to make sure this Home for the Holidays house would shine with a newfound soul and spirit. We believe we have accomplished this—through Weekend Workshops, special events, strategic partnerships and more—and hope you’ll find a reflection of your own lifestyle and inject some of that enthusiasm into your own abode. Many talk about the magic of the holidays—how the world becomes a bit kinder and how the days are sprinkled with a bit of magic. We hope that you find that magic as you enjoy this year’s Home for the Holidays; that you share that experience with friends…help your children learn something new…and absorb the beauty and the stories behind each room. It’s our sincere hope that the ideas and moments that you find in this house are ones that you’ll take back into your own home, and endeavor to create this magical, most beautiful time of year, all year long. ABOUT THE BENEFACTOR

THE SOUTHEASTERN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY (SHS) formed in 2008, growing out of the annual Southeastern Flower Show. Now, SHS has expanded to year-round educational programs and events with a mission to connect children, teens and adults in metro Atlanta—and throughout the Southeast—with nature. SHS provides a platform for communities to learn about, experience and sustain healthy environments. SHS Learning Gardens & Urban Farms are vibrant, active spaces located within communities throughout metro Atlanta. Each LG&UF is unique because it’s developed through engagement with community members. SHS brings knowledge, experience, technical assistance and year-round programming to develop a healthy, vibrant “green space” within the neighborhood. The sustainability of the LG&UF is accomplished by investing in the human capital of the local residents who acquire ownership through their continued involvement. Our focus on youth is apparent in these outdoor “science classrooms,” where SHS educators lead hands-on environmental education programs for children, teens and families. Each LG&UF features rain-harvesting water conservation systems, organic vegetable beds, composting stations, and native plants that attract and support pollinators. SHS programs promote healthy lifestyles through organic gardening and urban farming and teach people about good nutrition. We also support educational workshops by area experts that focus on current sustainable techniques and introduce teens and young adults

tto green jobs and careers in environmental sectors. SHS programs support innovative technology and sustainable practices such as Aquaponics, a large-scale composting, organic farming and water cconservation through rain harvesting. All of this helps build environmental awareness and creates a domino effect; as residents within a community are educated e and learn important skills, they are able to pass them along to others in their neighborhood, thereby building a stronger, more sustainable community that takes care of their own health and that of the environment around them. This is all essential in today’s world where there is a growing emphasis on green initiatives. Alex Smith Garden Design, Ltd. is thrilled to support the SHS at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Home for the Holidays showhouse by designing and installing a Kitchen Garden. This garden will be a charming outdoor room filled with vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers that offer year-round visual appeal. Winter vegetables will include broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, kale, chard and mustard greens. The plants will be arranged so that they form a colorful carpet of geometric patterns in the garden. Hedges of rosemary and blueberries will surround the space for definition. Plants with edible flowers such as nasturtium and violas will line the garden pathways and bed lines will be delineated by low willow fencing. Garden ornaments will include a central strawberry pot and an aged wooden bench. For more information on SHS, please visit sehort.org.

The Southeastern Horticultural Society hosts various educational programs for children, teens and families throughout the year.

ARCHITECT PETER BLOCK AND INTERIOR DESIGNER JOEL KELLY CREATE TIMEWORN BEAUTY FOR A NEW HOUSE IN BUCKHEAD

The dining room in this Tuxedo Park home designed by architect Peter Block and interior designer Joel Kelly possesses medieval flair. The trestle table is by Formations at Jerry Pair; Parsons chairs from 14th Street Antiques; sideboard from Provenance Antiques; oil painting from Tew Galleries; sconces are from AinsworthNoah; and iron chandelier from Dessin Fournir.

“IT’S A BOUTIQUE HOTEL FOR TWO with occasional

guests,” says architect Peter Block of the grand Shutze Awardwinning home he designed in Buckhead. The permanent guests are Marcia and Mark Miller, the CEO and CFO, respectively, of baby clothing and gifts behemoth Mud Pie. Marcia, the company’s founder, wanted to build a sanctuary where she could not only come home to her husband and cocker spaniel Chester, but also welcome her son and daughter’s future families. “We knew Peter wouldn’t give us ordinary,” she says. “We wanted an eclectic house and he achieved that.” In turn, Block, whose calling card is built on historicalinf luenced architecture, designed a 7,000-square-foot house for the couple that is split into wings and straddles the line between Old World and new. “It has kind of a fictional history,” says Block. “It looks like an Old English home built in the ’20s that has been really well maintained.” For the exterior, Block combined an Old English and an old American vernacular—steep roof lines, lime-washed brick and multi-paned windows—while a Belgian inf luence is evident in

the interior, with painted wood beams and thick plaster walls. “You feel a sense of substance with thick walls, like the house has been here a long time,” says Block, who enhanced several walls with unexpected deep-set interior steel windows. Though her brand is built on a precious aesthetic, Miller wanted anything but for the decor of her home. The couple was fortunate to find interior designer Joel Kelly, who got behind their vision. “The directive, as I saw it, was not to get in the way,” Kelly says plainly. “We have a saying in the industry: ‘Good architecture doesn’t need to be decorated.’” The only space where Kelly seems to have broken this rule was in the cozy, wood-paneled library. “The library is the most designed room in the house,” says the designer. “We found an antique map of London divided into 24 panels, so the room was designed around that find taking up an entire wall.” Furnishing a space with such arresting light and scale was a challenge perfectly suited for Kelly, known for his masterful editing. Together with Miller, he scoured Scott Antique Markets for accents and oddities that felt as though they had been there forever. “I enjoyed collecting quirky pieces, which my mother refers to as ‘quite odd,’” Miller says laughingly of the vintage scale that sits at the top of her stairs and the trio of cowbells on the living room sofa table. Another score was a bust by one of Rodin’s pupils that Miller found in Paris. “The house is peppered with unusual objects and it feels collected and authentic,” says Kelly. Though the house is dramatic in scale, the design team consciously established a sense of welcoming instead of formality, intimacy instead of austerity. “We weren’t trying to impress with this house, but invite,” says Kelly, who achieved that subtle balance through a mostly muted color palette and mix of high and low pieces. Because most of the house is plastered, it forms a warm envelope for cool colors. “There are little dashes of color every now and then, especially the orange,” says Kelly, who stacked salvaged books in the living room and lined up vintage transferware in the dining room to introduce those hues. “I think that one of the keys to this home is that nothing is too precious,” says Kelly. “You feel perfectly happy to come in and relax with the family that invited you.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

WHEN ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES launched a major design competition this past spring—a collaboration with the Georgia Chapter of ASID and iStar Residential—the response was unprecedented. The concept called for creating a three-bedroom model residence for a couple who loved to travel and collect fi ne art. But, given the location—the artsy and contemporary Residences at the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta—it also had to have an edge. Robert Grayson of GraysonHarris received notice of the contest via ASID, in a mass email like any other. But this one stood out, and he immediately forwarded it to business partner Andrew Harris with the unequivocal statement: “I want this.” It was all this pair needed to set their imaginations in motion. “When we were pulling our presentation together, there was no question in my mind that we would win,” reveals Harris, with a touch of humble hesitation. “I can’t explain it; I just got this feeling that we had figured this space out.” His intuition proved right. When the juried panel narrowed the entries down to three stellar submissions, readers submitted a startling 15,000 votes, ultimately naming GraysonHarris the winner. Essential to the duo’s design scheme: the interior architecture by Harrison Design Associates, which marked the fi rst in a series of new floor plans designed by the highly acclaimed fi rm for the Mandarin Oriental, following its transition from the Mansion on Peachtree. As modern studio director Robert Trestch explains, his team played up the angles of the unusual, octagonal architecture of Robert A.M. Stern, developing a layout hallmarked by interesting twists and turns. “It was important to us to embrace this architecture, to support it and enhance it,” says Grayson. Playing off the existing light black floors and warm gray surfaces, the pair delivered a scheme that spoke to a single overarching theme: Life is art. Going above and beyond

114

the obvious—collector-worthy pieces by such talents as Joseph Guay and Aaron Whitehouse—the designers selected sculptural lighting, textures and patterns interesting enough to make visitors stop and stare as if the space were a canvas on a gallery wall. In the combination living-dining area, the pair shook up the floor plan, turning a designated dining space on one end into a convivial keeping room, then placing a contemporary table by Skylar Morgan in the center. An inset elliptical ceiling detail specified by Harrison Design Associates runs the length of the rectilinear room, softening the room’s sharp angles. GraysonHarris mimicked its shape with a sensually curving sofa on one end and an integrated custom desk by Beau Holland Studio on the other. Taking center stage in the living area: a deceptively simple fi replace created with a monolithic slab of book-matched Calcatta gold marble, negating the need for art. Pops of color appear in every bedroom—one guest space bears a splash of amethyst; another, juicy citron. The master takes a sunnier approach, with lemon yellow pillows and equally engaging rugs. Just one room over, an oversize rubber ducky injects fun into the angled master bath, as does Jonathan Adler’s brass Maxime chair, recovered in nubby Persian pony hair by Bjork Studio. In fact, nearly every piece of upholstery in the residence—dozens of headboards, chairs, barstools and more—was crafted locally by the lauded workroom. Very new for the studio was the extensive metalwork involved, which GraysonHarris insisted upon for an extra shot of gleam. And in the end, it offered just the haute couture effect the fi rm was after. “This is the level of sophistication that iStar Residential said they wanted, and this is the level of sophistication we always want to give our clients,” Harris explains. “We didn’t want this to be a model; we wanted it to be a home.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

UNOBSTRUC TE D LUXURY THOUGH ATLANTA-BASED ARCHITECTURE FIRM HARRISON DESIGN ASSOCIATES HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH THIS PROPERTY SINCE IT OPENED IN 2008, THE FIRM EMPLOYED A COMPLETELY FRESH APPROACH FOR ITS TRANSITION TO NEW OWNERSHIP AND BRANDING. ONE YEAR AGO, AFTER BEING TAPPED TO DEVELOP NEW LAYOUTS FOR ISTAR RESIDENTIAL, OWNERS OF THE RESIDENCES AT MANDARIN ORIENTAL, ATLANTA, THE FIRM SET OUT TO CREATE MORE FLUID MOVEMENT THROUGHOUT EACH UNIT. “THIS WAS A CHALLENGE GIVEN THE ELONGATED, OCTAGONAL SHAPE OF THE BUILDING,” NOTES MODERN STUDIO DIRECTOR ROBERT TRETSCH. TO COMBAT THE UNUSUAL ANGLES IN THE LIVING/DINING SPACE, THE FIRM CREATED AN OVAL CEILING—A SHAPE ALSO REFERENCED IN THE GEOMETRY OF THE MASTER BATH AND THE ROUND VESTIBULES THROUGHOUT THE RESIDENCE, WHICH HELP ELIMINATE SHARP, 90-DEGREE ANGLES IN ITS CORRIDORS AND ADD DRAMA VIA COVED LIGHTING EFFECTS. IN ADDITION, THE SINK IN THE CENTRALLY LOCATED, COOK’S-QUALITY KITCHEN WAS PLACED ON A PERFECT AXIS AND COMPLIMENTED BY TRANSPARENT GLASS CABINETRY, PROVIDING AN UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW OF THE PEACHTREE ROAD SKYLINE THROUGH THE LIVING ROOM WINDOWS. ANOTHER ESSENTIAL ELEMENT TO THE THREE-BEDROOM CONDO: THE MASTER SUITE, WHICH “HAS A CERTAIN GRANDEUR, A GENEROSITY ESSENTIAL FOR THIS LEVEL OF SALE,” EXPLAINS TRETSCH. “THE HIS-AND-HERS CLOSETS ARE ALSO AMPLE, AND WE ENVISIONED THE MASTER BATH AS A SPA-LIKE RETREAT. THE TUB IS ON A PLATFORM, AND IF YOU LIE IN THAT TUB WITH YOUR HEAD ON ONE END, YOU GET A WONDERFUL VIEW OF STONE MOUNTAIN.”

LIFE QUINTESSENTIALLY ATLANTA

BLUE AND WHITE

What makes an Atlanta house a HOME? In the eleventh installment of our year-long series on the essentials of every Atlanta residence, MARCIA SHERRILL reflects on a classic color scheme.

IN BETH ELSEY’S HOME, A NICHE IN THE DINING ROOM, COMPLEMENTED BY BLUE STRIE WALLS, FEATURES CHINESE PORCELAIN PLATES FROM JANE MARSDEN ANTIQUES.

OR MANY ATLANTANS, our back lawns—and outdoor living spaces—simply would not be complete without whitepainted metal urns, blue hydrangeas and delphiniums and white wicker decked out in blue canvas or blue-and-white ticking. Whether this combination is repeated in bedrooms with head-to-toe toile, dining rooms enveloped in patterned wallpaper or the porcelain of our wedding china, Atlanta’s love affair with blue and white has carried on longer than our infatuation with Coca-Cola—or, for proper Atlanta hostesses, that little bit o’ heaven in a crystal bowl: ambrosia for dessert. My childhood crush on blue and white started young. There were 48 grandchildren, and we had our very own dining room, though it was a veritable shanty compared to the grown-up version—which boasted a chinoiserie mural in blue and white. Grandmother Nanny served adults their dinner on blueand-white Wedgwood. Their room was beautiful and the laughter abundant (I wanted in). The “grands” were allowed to make momentary forays into their enclave if, and only if, there was a serious crisis. (A broken arm barely counted, as four doctors were almost always in residence.) I quickly

became the family pest, claiming an urgent need to be with my mama: I had seen a ghost. I had tetanus. I had a verifiable report that the older cousins were kissing. Anything to get a glimpse of their veritable blueand-white heaven. Blue and white has always been soothing in the heat of Atlanta summers. Our mama was a Yankee, but she dropped that Minnesota pseudo-cabin look when she crossed the Mason-Dixon line. Blue and white was classy, and classic; it just never went away. Not that the last two decades haven’t seen challenges from colors such as lavender, green and red. Even black began popping up in interior design as folks realized its appeal wasn’t limited to the Little Black Dress. But these colors also seemed to change with the wind. Icons like Ralph Lauren in fashion and Charlotte Moss in interior design always return to the tradition of blue and white. (One can endure only so much orange.) But here in Atlanta, we never throw out the baby with the bath water—from our blue-and-whitetiled bathrooms, of course.
