We’re always asking designers to share their secret sources and favorite finds, so I thought I would share some of mine with you for the holidays. Here’s to a season of inspiration and delight! SWEETS: Boxes and boxes of French macaroons and dark chocolate cov-
ered orange peels that I order from a Parisian baker who comes to visit family in Atlanta every year SONG: “Christmas to Remember” by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton TREE TRIMMINGS: Buckets of ornaments in every color from Target EAT: Five dozen tamales and chicken tortilla soup on Christmas Eve (I’m from Texas) and my dad’s famous smoked ham and pork loin DRINK: Egg nog TRADITION: Holiday tea with friends at the Four Seasons DECORATION: Large pine cones from California in clear glass vases, blooming paperwhites and red berry wreaths (messy, but beautiful) MEMORY: Two surprise birthday lunches in my honor, one of which I accidentally foiled ahead of time, and the other for which I had not dressed appropriately or even combed my hair ! expanded the boutique to a third house on East Andrews Drive. The house, formerly occupied by Susan Lee women’s apparel, is next door to the original Boxwoods—
including the garden shop—which is connected to the gift shop. After renovating the new-to-them two-story house, Boxwoods Home opened its doors this fall. Customers
can venture from room to room, discovering all things entertaining and tabletop. Each room has its own theme, such as Country French, transitional or al fresco dining, and wares
run the gamut from invitations and serving pieces to a woodbeaded chandelier. The famous garden shop still boasts pre-made and custom floral compositions, planters and to-die-for orchids. The remainder of Boxwoods concentrates on gifts, keeping the children’s and women’s areas—along with its fabulous mix of vintage, antique and new decorative accessories—as is. Navigating your way through Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts was already an adventure, but the addition of Boxwoods Home makes exploration that much more satisfying. Such is the case at luxurious home decor gallery OwenLawrence. The store’s revamping included replacing carpet with hardwoods, moving cabinetry and adding lighting, all of which not only increased display space but also brightened the mood. According to store manager Fio Pichardo, a little purging allowed room for an entire Ralph Lauren Home line, plus a better flow among classic favorites such as Hermès and Lalique. “We have many price points, but all of our merchandise is of the finest quality,” Pichardo says. Maison Atlanta is doing its part to help lessen the frustration caused by Atlanta traffic thanks to huge windows that make it impossible for commuters to miss the showroom when they inevitably get caught at Howell Mill and 14th Street. The store’s perpetually updated vignettes feature such eyecatching palettes as yellow,

turquoise and red with chocolate brown, graphite gray, even tangerine and white. “We are constantly bringing in new pieces, from traditional to transitional to modern,” says sales director Crawford Bray. This boutique has moved from Piedmont Road to a new 25,000-square-foot space on Pharr Road. “We love the neighborhood, easy access, plentiful windows and large space,” says owner Kathryn Leach. “The positive response from our customers has been tremendous.” More space equals more inventory, of course, and Leach now has
room for Agraria home fragrances, Gianna Rose soaps, Lafco candles and Kumikookoon washable silk linens. Also new are Ann Gish robes, nightgowns and slippers to match Ann Gish bed linens. It’s kind of East meets West,” laughs Jennifer Van Galder, describing her partnership with William “Bryan” Rose. Van Galder and Rose joined forces to open Maudlin et al, an all-inclusive retail showroom and wholesale warehouse where customers can order custom draperies, upholstered furniture and lighting, even pick up an unusual antique or have the interior of their own abode designed from top to bottom. Van Galder, a Californian, opened the original Maudlin almost 20 years ago in La Jolla. Meanwhile, Rose—a native Atlantan— traveled the world in search of antiques, industrial furniture, architectural salvage and other objects of interest, filling the needs of his wholesale clients. Over the years their paths crossed many times, often when Van Galder purchased some of her favorite pieces from Rose. Each admired the other’s work, but it was when they worked together on a project a few years ago that they realized they

This December, I plan to cloister myself in my home so that I can avoid the following hazards of the holiday season: crowded malls; gridlock on Peachtree; Britney Spears’ version of “Santa Baby” piped through the speakers at my local grocery store; and cars with wreaths attached to the front grilles. (I’m willing to wager that a lot of you agree with me about that last one!) When I do inevitably have the need to venture out of my home, you can bet your bottom dollar that I won’t be wearing a novelty sweater adorned with jingle bells, battery-operated tree lights, nor appliqued reindeers. Bah! Humbug! I figure that as long as I’m spending so much time at home, I might as well make it seem like a haven of holiday cheer. I burn Rigaud Cypres candles to make my house smell like a Carolina pine forest. (Sure beats Pine-Sol.) Thanks to iTunes and Pandora, I’m able to create playlists of classic holiday music sung by Nat King Cole, Mel Tormé, and the Robert Shaw Chorale. Oh, and I can’t forget Alabama’s “Christmas in Dixie.” That’s my favorite Christmas song! And I make sure to have plenty of food and drink on hand for invited (and oftentimes uninvited) guests. You know, things like spiced pecans, rum balls, and Claxton fruitcake. Claxton really is the crème de la crème of fruitcakes, much like Le Sueur is for canned peas. But for all of the festivity that the holidays bring, we mustn’t forget those who are less fortunate. If we all give some of our time and money to charity, whether we put a few dollar bills in the Salvation Army red kettle, donate gifts to Toys for Tots or even volunteer at a soup kitchen, perhaps others can experience the true joy of Christmas. After all, that really is the reason for the season. You see? I’m not a scrooge all of the time. It only comes out when I’m face to face with a wreath-decorated car.

The magic of the holidays begins with one of the most anticipated attractions of the season, Christmas at Callanwolde. Period furniture, designer treasures, fine art and breathtaking Christmas trees reflect a glorious era when the Candler family lived in the mansion from the 1920s to the 1950s. This spectacular event enchants young and old with family activities, music played on the Aeolian pipe organ, cabaret nights, even holiday shopping that features “Charming ARTifacts” from the Callanwolde Artists’ Studio. The magnificent Gothic Tudor mansion, set on 12.5 acres in Atlanta’s Druid Hills neighborhood, was built in 1920 as the home of Charles Howard Candler, the eldest son of The Coca-Cola Company founder, Asa Candler. The mansion, centered around a large courtyard, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The immaculate attention to detail throughout the home is evident in the excellent craftsmanship of the walnut paneling, stained-glass windows, bronze balustrades, delicate ceiling and fireplace reliefs, and pierced tracery that conceals the Aeolian organ chambers.
Callanwolde Fine Arts Center Christmas at Callanwolde originated in 1977 as a decorators’ show house to raise funds to benefit Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, and has developed over three decades into a cherished holiday tradition. It’s the signature fundraising event for the non-profit center, which has served as a hub of cultural activity in Atlanta since 1971. Callanwolde offers classes and workshops for all ages in the visual, literary and performing arts. Special concerts and arts events are presented throughout the year, too, as well as gallery exhibitions, outreach programs and more. About the Callanwolde Estate
Callanwolde, the magnificent Gothic Tudor-style home of the Charles Howard Candler family, was completed in 1920. Charles Howard was the eldest son of Asa Candler, who founded of The Coca-Cola Company in 1892. The name “Callanwolde” came from the family’s ancestral home of Callan Castle near Kilkenny, Ireland; “Callan” is the Irish name for Candler and “wolde” is the Old English word for woods. Thus, Callanwolde is simply the “Candler Woods.” Callanwolde was designed by Henry Hornbostel, a renowned Pittsburgh architect. Hornbostel personally supervised the construction of the building, which boasts 27,000 square feet of living space. Located in the Druid Hills section of DeKalb County, Callanwolde is part of the residential area laid out by famed parks designer Frederick Law Olmsted, best known for his design of New York’s Central Park. The original grounds encompassed the mansion, gardener’s cottage, fourcar garage, swimming pool with club house, six tennis courts, two large greenhouses, barns for livestock, vegetable and flower gardens, formal gardens, fruit and nut trees, as well as spaces dedicated to native trees and shrubs. The mansion’s first floor comprised 10 rooms and two porches while the second floor had seven rooms formerly used as bedrooms as well as six bathrooms and two sun decks. GREAT HALL Through the front doors you enter the home’s central room, which was the scene of both Candler daughters’ weddings. The room is paneled in walnut that was obtained through W. J. Healy, an official of the Southern Railway Company. The paneling resembles that of the Pullman rail cars. GRAND STAIRWAY The large staircase, connecting the upper and lower halls, has bronze balustrades curving to either side of the landing. Another feature of the staircase is the stained-glass window at the landing and the intricately designed precast masonry grillwork on the ceiling above. It is this masonry detail that has become a symbol of the Arts Center. MUSIC ROOM AND LIBRARY The music room and library flank the front entrance. Surrounded by walls decked out in Asian motifs, the music room featured a grand piano. Charles Howard had a deep appreciation for music and many of the family’s parties were planned around it. Guests to the house included grand opera singer Rose Ponselle and light opera star Irene Dunne while virtuoso composer and organist Marcel Dupré gave performances at Callanwolde on the Aeo12

lian pipe organ. The library, where a portrait of Charles Howard hangs over the mantel, was a favorite spot for the Candler family to gather. BILLIARD ROOM AND LIVING ROOM With its simulated leather walls, imposing Romanesque fireplace and impressive stained-glass windows, the billiard room achieves a stately old European charm. Featured in the design of the window is the Candler family crest with the motto “Faithful Unto Death.” Next door, the winter living room is surrounded on three sides by windows and features a massive masonry fireplace as well as two ceiling panels through which music from the organ can be piped. DINING ROOM AND BREAKFAST ROOM The dining room features a white Italian marble fireplace, which went unused due to the hearth’s shallow depth and delicate interior tile design. The original Tiffany chandelier, a focal point of the room, was miraculously returned to the home in 1976 after having been stolen. The breakfast room is small in comparison to the other rooms, but the detail of the antiqued wood trim and teal tile fireplace made the space a cozy spot for small family meals. THE AEOLIAN ORGAN The console of the organ is located opposite the staircase in the Great Hall. During the 1900s, when symphonic orchestras were virtually non-existent, organ builders crafted instruments that could give audiences the fullness of symphonic sound. Crafted by the Aeolian Pipe Organ Company of New York, the Callanwolde organ has 3,742 pipes arranged in 55 ranks, or sets. The entire mechanism weighs 20,000 pounds yet blends with the architecture so well that it’s nearly impossible to know it’s there. When played, the organ fills the house with melodious sounds emanating from the ornamental grills in the front entrance, over the staircase and in the living room. This unique instrument, lovingly restored by the Callanwolde Guild, is one of the few of its kind in the world that remains playable in its original residential installation.
UPSTAIRS The upstairs served as the living quarters for the Candler family. Its Petite Hall, another one of the family’s favorite gathering places, is now a gallery featuring rotating exhibitions of local artists. The upstairs bedrooms have been transformed into the Arts Center’s administrative offices, class studios and The Callan Café. THE EXTERIOR AND CONSTRUCTION The exterior walls of the Callanwolde mansion are made of a steel framework covered with cement stucco. The home’s wooden floors are anchored to timbers laid in concrete over masonry units, supported by reinforced concrete beams. Although it was first heated by steam, the mansion was converted from coal to gas in the 1930s. A central air-conditioning system was installed in 1996. THE GROUNDS Although the Callanwolde estate today consists of 12.5 acres, the mansion was originally situated on 27 beautifully landscaped acres. Downhill from the house was a swimming pool surrounded by tall, lovely trees and nestled in the woods, near the pool, was a two-story stone house with the entire top floor dedicated to a playroom. The pool house, now called the Samuel Goldman Retreat, has been fully restored to its original design and provides additional space for Callanwolde’s ever-growing community arts programs. Behind the main house, duplicating it in style, is the carriage house. Its ground floor could hold four cars and housed a large laundry room while the upper floor had four bedrooms and two bathrooms for servants. Behind the carriage house is the conservatory, which serves as the headquarters for the DeKalb County Federation of Garden Clubs. Made up of 157 clubs, the organization was responsible for raising funds to restore the grounds. To the rear of the property is the former gardener’s cottage, which is now home to the Atlanta Young Singers of Callanwolde and houses music studios.

After receiving a fine arts degree from American Intercontinental University, David William D’Ambrosio furthered his design studies abroad in Barcelona, Florence and Costa Rica. His portfolio spans a broad range of projects, including upscale residential, maritime and high-rise developments in Atlanta, Miami and New York. He has also worked in Venezuela and Guatemala, where he collaborated with local artisans to infuse projects with regional artistic elements that reflected his clients’ personal styles. Kathryn Leach is an internationally recognized interior designer who expanded her career in 1980 as an in-house interior designer for Turner Broadcasting System, where she designed the original CNN Headline News on-air set. In 1988, she launched Leach Associates, Inc., specializing in corporate, residential, healthcare and hospitality environments. Leach has been involved with creative organizations such as The International Color Marketing Group, even serving as chairman of the group’s Color Forecasting Committee, which allowed the designer to hone her instincts and passion for projecting colors. Leach was recently appointed to the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance at Florida State University.

For designer Benjie Jones, Christmas has always been special. It was inevitable, perhaps, given his father was a retailer who sold, among other things, toys. As soon as he was old enough, Jones readily jumped right into the season’s fray. “From the age of 12 through high school, I helped out at the store,” he recalls. “And, I had a very creative mother who loved the season. Our house was always pretty festive.” Those holiday memories have translated beautifully into Jones’ own Virginia-Highland home, where there’s a seasonal touch, however subtle, in every room. The Christmas tree stands sentry in the foyer, clearly visible from the living room, while the dining room table is decked out like a white winter wonderland—artificial snow and all. What’s refreshing, though, is how the designer takes his holiday decor to an unexpected level. There are live trees in the kitchen, wreaths and a tall wooden Santa in the master bedroom and bath, greenery tucked behind paintings everywhere. In the guest room, there’s even a tabletop tree from the ’60s that Jones spray-painted black. “It looks like a tree from a forest that burned down, but it’s a beautiful, sculptural piece. It looks like it was made for this house,” he says, referring to the abundance of black used throughout the residence. One of the reasons it all works so well is because Jones applies his everyday decorating philosophy to his Christmas decorations, too. “Albert Hadley once said ‘once you hone in on your own aesthetic, everything you buy goes together.’ I’ve certainly found that to be true through the years,” says the selfdescribed collector. “As a designer, I like yin and yang. I grew up in the ’60s and ’70s. The Williamsburg era took over in the ’70s, when Christmas decorations were beautifully and tastefully done; my mother was a big proponent of that and I guess I still am, too. But there are some things from the ’50s and ’60s that are fun—Santas, reindeer and such. I try to mix things up by using a little of each era. I don’t think you ever want to lose the fun of Christmas and make it too serious.” No matter what your aesthetic, Jones stands firm on one thing: Christmas decorations should enhance your house, not overpower it. “You don’t want to take everything out of a room to bring Christmas in. I never have liked the idea of destroying a mantel just to put a wreath on it; just add something to the mantel that makes it Christmas-y. It may be that wreath, but don’t ruin your whole decor to put it there.” Editing, after all, is what good design is all about. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 49

To step through the door of Jill Sharp Brinson’s 1930s cottage is to be instantly swept up in her consuming passions. Guests are greeted with an architectural mix of salvaged woods and steel, embroidered textile as art above the mantel, and decor with references as far-reaching as Marrakech. “I treat my home like a great outfit,” says the interior designer and stylist of the farmhouse-loft cottage she shares with her photographer husband, Rob, in Atlanta’s Peachtree Heights neighborhood, along with their three dogs. “Sometimes it feels like jeans and a t-shirt, other times, cool heels and an amazing jacket.” This perpetual styling and personalization of spaces is the designer’s daily pursuit as creative director for Atlanta-based home furnishing company Ballard Designs. “We try to give people a method to build a home that’s personal by moving things around, buying beautiful pieces, then mixing them with pieces from your travels or your amazing eclectic aunt,” she says. With a kick of her Tory-clad heel, the multi-hyphenated Brin56

son boots the notion of a conventional Christmas up into the air, creating an unexpected space where you simply want to sit back and soak in the season. To begin, she enlisted the help of friend Suzanne Kasler, incorporating the Atlanta-based interior design star’s latest holiday collection for Ballard Designs into her decor. The line includes chic staples, from glass ornaments and glitter baubles to faux trees and linen tree skirts with velvet trim. Inside, Brinson maximizes every inch of her European-style cottage’s lofty 20-foot ceilings and open floor plan by installing unique focal points at each turn. A floating branch suspended above the dining table adds unexpected dazzle with hanging glass and glittering ornaments. “Every year I hang things on it that I love, like a Jonathan Adler horse and a funny little bird,” she says. Brinson’s fresh take on a classic holiday statement fulfills an ethos that she and Kasler share: that “a room should be collected, not decorated,” she says. In the kitchen, Brinson strung Kasler’s sparkling sunburst mirrors across the enlarged casement windows

She says she gravitated toward the pearl, bronze, and pink painted glass ornaments from the boxed set of 24 in Kasler’s collection. that overlook a Provence-inspired garden. “They look like jewelry,” says Brinson. “They make a traditional space look fun and an energetic space look grounded.” Throughout the house, natural-looking greenery and Frasier fur trees from Kasler’s collection usher in a warm, woodsy feeling while playing up the house’s rustic character. When faced with convention, Brinson’s imagination shifts into cutting-edge. For the Christmas tree, she pays an artful homage to her favorite French artists Christo and Jean-Claude by wrapping the 9-foot tree with more than eight yards of grey matte silk fabric. “It’s modern, it’s pretty, it’s a little bit ‘wow,’ and that’s how I want to live,” she exclaims. Indeed, the storybook cottage radiates the warmth of Brinson’s lively spirit, from the fresh cedar letters spelling out “joy” that herald the season to the glamorous sea of votives inside and out. For nearly two decades, Erica and Michael Dines have proudly called Inman Park home. The neighborhood—one of the nation’s first “garden communities” which would later inspire the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Druid Hills—is known as much for its historic character as it is for its curvilinear streets and generous public spaces. The couple’s bungalow overlooks the park, so when a rare blizzard blanketed their home last winter, Erica and Michael, along with daughters Eva and Grace and pitbull Mia, simply headed for the neighborhood’s hills to take advantage of the sparkling winter wonderland. ¶ “The girls remember every time it has snowed in Atlanta, each time they’ve gone sledding,” says Erica. “This is the house they grew up in, and we’ve always built snowmen across the street. It doesn’t matter what time of day or night, but the fields just light up in the snow. I love sitting on the front porch and watching from afar.” ¶ Creative by nature—Erica is an editorial and commercial photographer, while Michael is an established artist known for his large-scale landscapes and still lifes—the Dines family culled their artistic aesthetics to create an unforgettable holiday display among the quietude and calm of the surrounding snow. ¶ They began by framing their fragrant evergreen within the profile of their carefully cultivated 8-foot privet hedge (Michael’s labor of love through the years), fronted by a Puziodesigned wrought-iron gate. Grace, a middle schooler, and Eva, a college student, both craftsmen in their own right, hand-strung popcorn and applied a glittery finish before adding the strands to the tree. Also taking pride of place: Erica’s collection of vintage silver metal stars and discs and oversized antique light bulbs, while mercury glass ornaments from Anthropologie added a festive pop of color. The result is a picture-perfect wintry scene only the Dines family could craft.

It was warm and tropical but it was perfect. FOOD: When our family gets together, it’s an Italian feast with Erica’s grandfather’s eggplant (her sister makes it best), fresh cannoli, lasagna or Swedish meatballs.
