FOR A RECENT TASTEMAKER TAG SALE HOSTED BY ONLINE FLASH-SALE BEHEMOTH ONE KINGS LANE, I was asked to define what, exactly, makes Atlanta’s design style so distinctive. Because I had been spending an extraordinary amount of time at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles 2013 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse & Marketplace at the time (and the sale would feature buzz-worthy items from its tailored-to-a-T spaces), the answer was as simple as taking a seat in one of the house’s inspiring nooks and allowing its mastery of self-expression to sink in. My response, in short: Atlanta’s design community is best known for taking risks, for their originality and for their effortless blending and layering of styles. (For proof, see our cover, where interior designer Barbara Westbrook’s high-style but approachable dining room is the definition of easy elegance.) You’ll also find an incredible amount of inspiration from the Showhouse on the pages that follow, from our highlights (“Top Design,” page 65) to a trend report (“New + Next,” page 17). A huge, heartfelt thanks to the many design professionals whose brilliant execution of carte blanche provided such a feast for the eyes—in addition to the countless volunteers and generous sponsors who made it Elizabeth Ralls all possible—and successful. Design with Purpose In an age where thoughtful, handmade furnishings rank high on a consumer’s wish list, Jerri Hobdy is delivering just that. At last year’s Salone Satellite at the prestigious Milan Furniture Fair, the recent SCAD grad showcased three pieces, including the intricately crafted Ampy stool. Made from compounding two miles of yarn that she chain-stitched herself, Hobdy describes the concept as “amplifying one unit to create something bigger than itself.” It’s this creative outlook, along with her innovative combinations of materials, that has retailers knocking on her door. (Locally, her products are sold at AtlantaMade.) Hobdy is currently working on a seating collection for her newly launched label, Pure-if-Hide, that focuses on creating toxin- and chemical-free products. “What’s most important for me is creating lasting products that are healthy for people,” she says. A FINE VINTAGE After 25 years in graphic design, Tonya Beach got the itch to go down a fresh path. Translating her talent for color, texture and form to the merchandising of midcentury furniture, she swung open the doors to Westside Modern in October. Featured among scores of Copenhagen imports are names like Milo Baughman, Patricia Urquiola and Adrian Pearsall, along with Moroccan rugs and accessories gleaned from excursions to Scandinavia, London and Brazil. LUXE LUCITE
MORE THAN A FEW CLEVER TRENDS revealed themselves at the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Home for the Holidays showhouse after weeks of tours and visitors. Atlanta designers are known for taking risks, and showhouse veterans Cheryl Womack and Alison Womack Jowers are no exception. In the lady’s retreat, they went for the bold, employing a striking hand-painted Silk Scarf linen from Porter Teleo on a window cornice and small stool. These painterly textiles, whether brandishing abstract watercolors, bold brushwork or irregular repeats, are quickly gaining traction in the industry. Best reserved for flat surfaces, this type of pattern begs star treatment, so avoid using too many additional textures, advises Jowers. Equally stunning were the multi-spoked chandeliers on view in the family room by Kay Douglass Interiors and the back porch by Steve McKenzie’s. McKenzie incorporated a tangerine fi xture from Stimulight. “I love using a Sputnik in rooms to bring a modern element and provide some creative tension with otherwise classical and traditional style,” says McKenzie.
RICH OCHRE
Throughout the home, a golden ochre tone reigned. The office and mudroom, both by Insidesign, combined a curry color with vibrant vermillion and teal, while Harrison Design Associates’s Karen Ferguson complemented a wall papered in Sister Parrish’s Chou Chou with a ceiling painted in high-gloss ochre. To add a similar dose of warmth to a sun-starved space, she suggests limiting the color to a pattern and pairing with high-contrast neutrals. Contemporary accents in the form of durable and easy-to-carefor acrylic maximized a sense of freshness at every turn. Ideal for creating layers of interest without visual clutter, transparent pieces, like the Lucite bench and lamp in B.D. Jeffries’ powder room hallway, shook up any sense of the traditional or staid. 17

of intimate dining experiences that transported tastebuds to her native Kerala. After gaining a cult-like following, Gomez opened the doors to her first brick-and-mortar restaurant, Cardamom Hill, in 2012, which quickly grabbed the national spotlight. Now, Gomez unveils her latest concept—Spice to Table.

AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham I DOUBT THAT I WILL EVER CURB MY ENTHUSIASM for decorators’ showhouses and tours of homes. On any given weekend, you will find me in attendance at one of Atlanta’s myriad showhouses, including Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Home for the Holidays, the Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House and the Cathedral Antiques Show’s Inspiration Avenue. And when there’s not a showhouse on view, there is more than likely a tour of homes taking place in one of our city’s storied neighborhoods, including those sponsored by the Junior League of Atlanta, Peachtree Garden Club and Modern Atlanta. Taking a peek inside some of Atlanta’s most exquisite homes is possible on an almost weekly basis. However, there are times when physically touring homes isn’t possible, and that’s when my favorite social media app satisfies my design cravings: Instagram. Sick in bed? A rainy night in Georgia? No problem. Stay home and look at Instagram. You’ll find all kinds of glorious photos uploaded by top designers. There are some who take snaps of their own homes and post them to Instagram. These might be my favorite photos, because they’re like virtual tours of really chic homes. You can see how one A-list designer sets his table for a dinner party, while another might show us what her bedside table looks like. Ever wonder what kind of dogs designers have? Instagram will let you know. In the short time that I have joined, I have learned that most New York designers prefer little dogs (no surprises there). Thanks to Instagram, I feel like I’m taking a trip around the world. I view photos that capture life and style in such far flung places as England, Australia and even Qatar. I have visited Albany, which is the most famous apartment building in London, the U.S. embassy in Madrid and the Louvre in Paris—all from the comfort of my easy chair! But as satisfying as Instagram might be, it will never take the place of my beloved showhouses and home tours. Those are two traditions with which no technology can compete.

AFTER TASTING SUCCESS WITH HER JAMES BEARD AWARD–NOMINATED RESTAURANT CARDAMOM HILL, chef Asha Gomez is presenting Atlantans with another unique dining concept—Spice to Table. The fast-casual breakfast and lunch spot explores Gomez’s culinary ventures from Kerala and Mumbai to New York and now the South. The result is a tantalizing menu enhanced by Gomez’s affinity for flavorful spices. “My spice tray is always close at hand. A pinch of turmeric or a dash of masala combined with other fresh ingredients is the essence of Spice to Table. I try to discover from and savor our surroundings,” she says. Embodying this philosophy is Gomez’s fluffy rice muffins with banana leaves—they’re stuffed with anything from vegetables and fruits to eggs or any other produce currently available from local farmers. The chef also invites Spice to Table guests to grab a cup of chai and shop the restaurant’s retail market, which is stocked with spiced jams and jellies, savory pastries and other handcrafted foodie goods by local artisans. spicetotable.com 28

A Slice of Paradise
FALL INTO A KEY WEST STATE OF MIND AT THE OCEAN KEY RESORT & SPA WRITTEN BY Sejal
KEY WEST HAS LONG BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH THE MYSTIQUE OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY. The literary legend arrived on the small island via ferry from Havana in 1928 as a stopping point on his way north. But when the Ford automobile that should have been awaiting the author near the docks didn’t arrive, a day’s delay turned into a lifetime love affair with Key West’s sun-kissed shores. Hemingway described the island as the greatest place in the world—a tall statement for someone whose passport included stamps from exotic locales such as France and Spain. He’s certainly not alone in this sentiment, as visitors continue to flock to this balmy paradise to soak in its sunny skies and easygoing ambiance. Spend an afternoon getting lost among its charming streets lined with pastel-colored bungalows and soaring palm trees, but save some time to explore the island’s cultural hub: Duval Street. Lined with boutiques, restaurants and bars—many that Hemingway himself use to frequent—the street is Key West’s beating heart. Walk south down Duval and eventually you’ll happen upon the southernmost point of the United States. At the opposite end of the street, you’ll fi nd the posh Ocean Key Resort & Spa. It’s said that location is everything, and this resort’s enviable address of Zero Duval Street is indeed the best one in town. Nestled beside the Key West harbor, 30

Ocean Key is a stone’s throw away from all the action, but far enough removed to provide some solitude from the city’s buzzing nightlife. The jewel of the boutique hotel is the heated harborside pool that boasts views of passing sailboats and yachts. Take in the scene from one of the many plush poolside cabanas. Servers are on hand to indulge guests with tropical drinks and even chilled refresher towels for a respite from the hot southern sun. Another daytime favorite for Ocean Key guests is a visit to the property’s quaint Spa Terre. Treatments are enhanced with exotic tropical oils, aromatic herbs and purifying volcanic clays from Java, Bali and Thailand. The ritual bath—a before or after treatment experience—is not to be missed. An outdoor wooden tub is prepared with fresh flower petals, salts and fragrant aromatherapy essence for a serene soak that’s accompanied by a glass of bubbly or a cup of herbal tea. Other highlights of the chic resort include luxuriously appointed accommodations with ocean views, sunset sailing
excursions and waterfront dining on Sunset Pier and Hot Tin Roof. The latter’s inventive menu is a mix of seafood and land fare prepared in a unique culinary style dubbed “conch-fusion,” a mélange of tastes and fragrances that combines traditional Florida and Caribbean fl avors. No matter how Ocean Key guests divide their time at the hotel, one thing is certain—spectacular views are part of every experience. oceankey.com

Grace to you, and peace!
The 2014 Show is packed with many fascinating and educational events that you will not want to miss!
On behalf of the people of the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I welcome you to the 2014 Cathedral Antiques Show and Tour of Homes. I also welcome you to this church, established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta. We moved to our present Buckhead location in 1932 and have grown tremendously since then.
Once again, we have a great complement of antiques dealers with beautiful furniture and decorative items for everyone. In addition to our keynote speakers, renowned architect Bobby McAlpine and award-winning interior designer Susan Ferrier, we have five other leading tastemakers who will give presentations on subjects ranging from the historical evolution of furniture to the creation of handmade wall coverings to incorporating antiques into today’s lifestyles. Our two annual parties, the Gala Preview Party and the Drinks & Antiques Party, offer delicious food to enjoy while shopping the magnificent dealer booths. We also have three new facets of the Show. Inspiration Avenue, located on the second floor of the Cathedral, features vignettes created by nine interior designers for influential historical clients, including Winston Churchill, the Queen of Sheba and many more. Furthermore, we have added tours conducted by appraisers and dealers to enhance your experience on the dealer floor. This year, we have incorporated flowers more prominently in the Show, with floral designers displaying their work on Inspiration Avenue, six church flower guilds showcasing their talents throughout the Cathedral and a presentation by Joseph Massie, five-time winner at the Chelsea Flower Show.
The Cathedral Antiques Show began as a small and seasonal fundraiser organized by our parish Episcopal Church Women. Their work—and ministry—now requires a year-round commitment and has raised more than $4 million dollars for charitable organizations. Obviously, we delight in the antiques presented here—in a show considered one of the finest in the Southeast—but this effort involves so much more than antiques! This is a powerful ministry of outreach. The proceeds this year are designated for Crossroads Community Ministries. Their mission is to empower the homeless to progress on the road to economic and personal self-sufficiency. Each year they assist almost 4,000 individuals and families in metro Atlanta, including an alarming and increasing number of children.
All of these great events are bookended by two fabulous tours of homes. The week will kick off with a tour of six first-time residences in Peachtree Park and end with an opportunity to experience five spectacular homes in the Buckhead area. We hope you will purchase tickets for these events and encourage others to participate as well. Every ticket sold increases the funds that we will donate to our beneficiary, Crossroads Community Ministries. We chose this remarkable organization due to its positive impact on the Atlanta community. With limited resources, Crossroads has proved successful in helping those who face dire circumstances turn their lives around with the goal of becoming productive citizens. Crossroads needs your support to continue to achieve its mission!
I thank this year’s Co-Chairs, Marion Williams and Katherine Hill, for doing an outstanding job. They have organized hundreds of volunteers in creating this weeklong event. Furthermore, I salute Tish and Rowland Radford for serving as Honorary Chairs of the Antiques Show. I am proud to recognize Tish and Rowland as friends, and they represent Cathedral faithfulness and generosity at its best. I also thank each of you for visiting the Cathedral today, and I invite you to return for other occasions of service and prayer. We are open daily, and this is truly a house of prayer for all people. Your presence helps us fulfill our mission of openness and hospitality!
Thanks and enjoy the Show!

Tish and Rowland Radford Tish and Rowland Radford have served as pillars of the Cathedral of St. Philip and the greater Atlanta community for more than 50 years. Tish grew up in Beaufort, North Carolina, and was a voice major and president of the choir at St. Mary’s College before graduating from the University of North Carolina with a degree in education. She moved to Atlanta in 1955 and taught at Peebles Street Elementary School. She is a life-long Episcopalian who has served in St. Anne’s Guild, sung in the Cathedral’s choir and led music for the children’s chapel for many years. Tish is a member of the Ivy Garden Club and belongs to the Decorative Arts Committee at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens. Rowland attended Georgia Military Academy (Woodward Academy) and the University of Georgia. He was confirmed at the Cathedral in 1945. Upon graduating from the University of Georgia, he led a distinguished career in public finance with The Robinson-Humphrey Company. After retiring, Rowland served his community as a board member of Canterbury Court for 17 years and as its president for two years. He has served the Cathedral as a 50-year member of his ushering team, a member of the finance committee and as both Junior and Senior Warden on the Chapter. Rowland is a Trustee of the Georgia Museum of Art. The Radfords have been recognized for their loyal service and dedication to the Georgia Museum of Art as they have been instrumental in strengthening the museum’s art exhibitions and educational programs. They have been married for 57 years and have three beautiful children and six wonderful grandchildren. They love traveling and have toured the world extensively. When at home in Atlanta, Tish and Rowland can be found in the Cathedral every Sunday morning, enjoying the service and singing exuberantly with their extended family. In recognition of their substantial and long-standing support of the Cathedral and the Atlanta community, we are delighted to welcome Tish and Rowland Radford as the Honorary Chairs of the 2014 Cathedral Antiques Show.

2014 Beneficiary
The Cathedral Antiques Show raises funds through event ticket sales and donations by patrons and corporate sponsors. These funds are annually donated to a local charity. This year’s beneficiary is Crossroads Community Ministries.
Crosssroads C Crossroads Cr Community omm mun Ministries Mi inistries It all began with a simple act of compassion. A parishioner at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church handed a man a sandwich in 1972. That man, referred to as a “street person,” left the church and told a buddy, who told a buddy. Eventually, the number grew to some 600 people being fed daily at the St. Luke’s Soup Kitchen. Thankfully, other churches, faith groups and organizations took note and began to reach out to those who were now labeled as “homeless.” As the numbers swelled, those involved with operating the St. Luke’s Soup Kitchen began to ask themselves a profound question—can we do more for those who are homeless than offer a sandwich? Today the mission of Crossroads, born out of all those years of experience, is to assist women, men and children as they progress on the road to self-sufficiency. For many homeless individuals, the first experience with Crossroads comes through Clyde’s Kitchen. Clyde Corbin, along with his dedicated staff and many tireless volunteers, rise before dawn to prepare more than 60,000 meals each year. A warm, healthy meal from Clyde’s Kitchen is usually the only meal many guests will eat each day. Beyond a warm, nutritious meal, Crossroads’ guests are offered access to services through the Renewal Project, a 90-day stabilization program providing a mailing address and assistance with state identification cards and birth certificates—all part of the critical first step in gaining employment. The Angels Over Atlanta program provides extended case management tailored specifically for each of Crossroads’ guests with a physical and/or mental disability. Through the Housing Solutions program, Crossroads also provides access to safe, affordable housing for chronically homeless men, women and children. Over the last three years, more than 200 women and children have moved into safe, affordable apartments. These working moms, many of whom have been in domestic violence situations, will be provided fresh starts, free from the torment of physical and mental abuse. Equally important, their children will enter school systems where a good educational base will be built along with positive social skills which are needed in any work environment. We are thankful to be the beneficiary of the Cathedral Antiques Show this year and appreciate the generous support of the Show’s patrons and sponsors. “Being named as the beneficiary of this incredible outreach program of The Cathedral of St. Philip is an honor,” says Wayne Vason, Crossroads Board Chairman. “Metro Atlanta continues to need more focus and financial aid for our homeless. Support from the Show will provide us with funding so that the people we serve can regain self-sufficiency and dignity.” For more information, please visit us at CrossroadsAtlanta.org or call (404) 873-7650. Tuxedo Road
Built in 2000, this enchanting stucco house with a mansard slate roof was designed by local architecture firm Pak-Heydt and Associates. Architect Charles Heydt worked with the homeowners to create a French “hotel particulier,” or grand townhouse. The curvilinear iron balconies outside the second story windows intimate the beautiful iron rail of the interior staircase. The parquet and limestone floors evoke the Palace of Versailles and the many French doors lead to beautiful gardens designed by Howard Design Studio. The home’s interiors are faithful to its French inspiration; designers Ginny Magher and Judy Jordan created a beautiful Provencal setting with authentic French boiserie paneled walls, luxurious toile fabrics and exquisite antique French furniture. All of these features create a unique and charming residence that evokes French living at its finest.
Nawench Drive
Duane Stone designed this American Georgian house for an Atlanta couple that wanted a classic family house which entertains well. The exterior of the house—red brick with a cedar shake roof—took its design cues from homes in rural Virginia and Charleston. The house was built in 2007 and features traditional interior architectural details which set the stage for beautiful furniture and art that the homeowners have both collected and inherited. The house is filled with gorgeous color, fabrics and wallpaper, and is a reflection of the couple’s good taste. A standout section of the home is the bright sunroom with metal casement windows and a vaulted ceiling. This sunny space overlooks a spacious and appealing backyard.
Blackland Road Palm Beach architecture is the inspiration for this Mediterranean, Italianate-style house in Buckhead. Architect Jeffery W. Smith has a deep respect for Gilded Age pioneers Addison Mizner and Maurice Fatio, therefore, Smith’s designs seek to recreate their elegant design aesthetic. The splendor of the Mediterranean architectural style is on full display in this residence, which was finished in 2010. The lot was purchased by the owner’s parents in 1951 and the original house was designed by Atlanta architect Clem Ford. In keeping with her parents’ legacy, Ruth Dobbs Anthony and her husband, Tom, built a house that would accommodate a large extended family and also have a suite for the family matriarch, Ruth’s mother, Ruth Dobbs McDonald. In 2008, the original structure was torn down and the new project paired builder John Berndsen with landscape architect Alex Michaeledes of Land Plus. Ruth Dobbs Anthony is an accomplished interior designer and the interiors reflect her love of beauty, detail and color. The house recently won a 2013 Obie award for single-family residence.

Muscogee Condominiums
William Rooker built these handsome stucco condominiums in 1968. First developed as 16 apartments for Rooker’s widowed mother and her friends as they downsized from their Buckhead homes, they are now privately owned condominiums. Mack Tucker of Tucker & Howell was just launching his career as an architect when Rooker asked him to begin the drawings. Tucker had been the project manager at The Villa condominiums designed by Philip Shutze, and that project seems to have influenced his ideas for these classic residences. The Cathedral Antiques Show is excited to present three of these beautiful residences for the house tour. Two of the residences are the homes of interior designers Linda Beth Loughlin and Allyson Kirkpatrick and the third residence was decorated by Atlanta native and New York designer Sarah Norwood. Each condo presents a unique style and approach to decorating for a small space.
West Paces Ferry Road
Atlanta architect Robert Norris of Spitzmiller Norris describes this charming shingled country house as “East Coast vernacular.” Sited on a wooded Buckhead lot, the inviting home is filled with beautiful architectural details. Inspired by a previous collaboration with the owners in Charlotte, architects Spitzmiller and Norris designed the home for the family when they moved to Atlanta in 1998. The team gathered again to renovate the entire house in 2012, adding new entertaining spaces off the back. Interior designer Candy Lloyd filled the house with warm colors and interesting textures which coordinate perfectly with the architecture. The kitchen and light-filled family room are the heart of the house where this bustling family and friends gather.

Each room has its own personality while still adding to the home’s cohesive design scheme. The colorful living room with its unique spirit has personality for days. Each piece was deliberately chosen and plays a critical role in the overall ambiance of the space.
This cozy cottage was flawlessly designed with simple sophistication in mind. Guests are welcomed by the open living room with a variety of unique pieces that come together to create an ambiance of rustic elegance.

Inspired by the homeowners’ tasteful sense of style, the nursery redefines the phrase “a place for everything and everything in its place.” The muted blues and bold patterns throughout the room create a soft, refreshing dynamic, making it the perfect place for a baby.
Resting on a gently sloping hill, this home is brimming with character from the inside out. The precious guest room is filled with natural light and vintage pieces. The opposing patterns come together beautifully, giving the room a stamp of originality.

Throughout this home, there are personal touches that boost its character at every turn. The bedroom’s soft color palette provides the perfect backdrop for the asymmetric design scheme that blends the eccentric and classic.
The spaces in this charming home seamlessly walk the line between grace and comfort. The living room’s warm color palette is paired with unconventional animal print and custom pieces that reflect the homeowner’s personal flair.

Meet our presenters: BETH WEBB
JOEL KELLY
Beth Webb has a penchant for great art, beautiful proportions, and comfortable, yet luxurious touches. With a background in art history, culminating in a Master’s Degree from the Sotheby’s Works of Art Course in London, Beth came to the world of interior design via her first career as an art dealer. Today, with over 20 years of experience as president and CEO of Beth Webb Interiors, Beth believes that proper scale and a sense of timelessness are the foundation of any successful interior—whether it’s traditional, eclectic, or contemporary. Based in Atlanta, GA, Beth Webb’s projects include homes throughout the southeast, as well as residences in Los Angeles, Florida, Connecticut, Michigan and Costa Rica. Beth and her work have been featured in numerous regional and national publications, including Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Coastal Living, ELLE DECOR, House Beautiful and Southern Accents.
Architect and interior designer Joel Kelly, principal of Joel Kelly Design in Atlanta, had his formal training and education at both Georgia Tech and Princeton University, as well as a stint at the Ecole De Beaux Arts in Paris. Working under Michael Graves immediately following school put him in the thick of a well-known firm at an early age, giving him invaluable experience that he carries to this day. Recent honors include the 2013 Shutze Award in Interior Design and a Silver Award from the ASID Georgia Chapter. Other distinctions include being named one of the “Top 20 Under 40” by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles in 2008 and one of the 50 most influential people in the Atlanta design community, again by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. Joel’s work has been included in the pages of VERANDA, Traditional Home, The Atlantan, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, Paper City, Décor Magazine and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.

At the recent Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Home for the Holidays Showhouse & Marketplace, area designers unleashed their impeccable style on a rambling Colonial-style Buckhead abode. The result: tailored-to-a-T spaces that both push the envelope and beckon guests to stay awhile.

Family Room
K ay Dougl ass and Dixie Peeples, South of M ar k et
The concept for this home’s warm and contemporary family room began with the idea of a cross ottoman anchoring the space. “We decided the ottoman should be Swiss red, and the room’s palette evolved from there,” says Douglass. A vivid red-and-blue tribal rug found in France reinforced their vision. An extension of the kitchen and breakfast nook, the family room also opens up to an outdoor living space. Douglass and Peeples designed the room as a comfortable gathering space, where children and teenagers alike would feel welcome. To that end, the design team utilized the perimeter of the room to maximize seating. “The custom-made banquettes soften the room and create comfortable reading nooks,” Douglass says. 67

Library
William Peace, Peace Design
A long, curved sofa swept visitors into the cozy paneled library. Designer William Peace was inspired by a collection of wooden bowls by the Moulthorps—three generations of Atlanta wood carvers—and displayed the coveted pieces throughout the space. “I wanted the room to be warm, rich and somewhat masculine,” says Peace, “since the rest of the house is light and more feminine.” To enliven the traditional space, he hung an oversize red and white encaustic painting, and added a mirrored coffee table for shine to contrast with the tactile fabrics, artwork and books.

Dining Room
Bar bar a Westbrook , Westbrook Inter ior s
The white-on-white dining room felt anything but ho-hum under Barbara Westbrook’s skillful direction. “I wanted it to be a room that would entice everyone to stay seated after a meal and chat with one another,” says the designer. Comfortable dining chairs, upholstered in an approachable wool, received just the right dose of formality from elaborate embroidered monograms. Lush linen curtains with a row of tiny pleats at the hem lent the room Westbrook’s signature dressmaker polish. Above the table, Westbrook hung an eye-catching piece to create a strong focal point: a sculptural antique chandelier made of bronzed leaves, hand-cut crystals, carved wood and red-painted metal.

Master Bedroom
K elly Wolf A nthon y, Wolf Design Group
The unabashedly glamorous master suite included a palette of blacks, whites and greys. “Black and white always inspires me,” says designer Kelly Wolf Anthony. “I find this palette to be both calm and sharp at the same time.” She counteracted the palette with sumptuous textures such as lamb’s wool, fur and velvet for added warmth. The showstopper: a polished malachite headboard, an unexpectedly chic twist to the plush space.

The lavish luxury of the bedroom extended into the master bath, where a tufted suede ottoman set on a sheepskin rug created a glamorous feel. Kelly Wolf Anthony suspended artwork in front of the windows, adding dimension and privacy to the spalike space. Cascading, moisture-resistant curtains softened marble countertops and tile floors while agate and nickel sconces added a jewel-like touch to his-and-hers- vanities.

Living Room
Jimmy Stanton, Stanton Home Fur nishings
This home’s front door opens directly into the living room, requiring the light-and-bright space to both welcome visitors as well as entertain. “I wanted it to be a room that’s not too stuff y, but refined and inviting,” says Jimmy Stanton, who strategically hung collections of botanical plates between on the walls between French doors (the room features six sets of doors). A soothing assemblage of tailored, comfortable seating with low, metal-framed chairs beckoned visitors to stay, while patterned fabrics, from the zebra cowhide to a Greek key design added visual interest to the tailored space. A pale oushak created subtle pattern and character.

Stair Halls
Courtney Giles Deck er , Courtney Giles Inter iors
The central intersection of this year’s showhouse: a large, airy stair hall. Courtney Giles Decker filled the lofty space with a mix of antique furniture and interesting works of art designed to complete the area without making it feel cluttered. “For inspiration, we started with the large canvas painting and then pulled colors from it,” says Decker. Touches of blue, including the antique glass jugs (downstairs) and a pair of columns (upstairs), contributed to the central hall’s breezy ambiance and prove both dramatic and soothing in the large space. Slipcovers tempered the formality of antique French chairs downstairs, as did the nubby cotton-and-linen fabric on a pair of small benches beneath the console. A collection of framed intaglios anchored an upstairs wall.

Kitchen
Bell K itchen & Bath Studios
The spacious, light and airy kitchen melded the best of traditional and modern design. Classically styled cabinets—some with glass fronts—lent interest to the upper walls, while an island stained in a rich green suggested the structure of an old farm table. The centerpiece of the cozy space: a white range hood with brass trim, alluding to the graceful elegance of a European kitchen. Tracery’s Paige Schnell and Anna Kay Porch completed the space with decorative details.

At the opposite end of the kitchen, a lively breakfast room offered the perfect spot for casual weeknight get-togethers and family meals. Paige Schnell and Anna Kay Porch set the tone for the cheery space with a vibrant overdyed rug, echoing its saturated colors in the blue skirted chairs and colorful table settings. “We began with the idea of peacock and citron colors and eventually tied those in with the rug, pillows and curtains,” says Schnell. A modern crystal chandelier above the table enhanced the room’s youthful feel.

Men’s Guest Suite
Bill Musso, Todd Fa lconbury & L aur en Dott, Musso Design Group “The inspiration for this space came from an editorial spread in Vogue,” says Musso Design Group principal and lead designer Bill Musso. “There was a modern approach to luxury with a baroque twist to it that was intriguing.” Ornate elements, such as a tufted chaise, crystal chandelier and chartreuse velvet paneled walls contributed to the room’s opulent, old-world aesthetic. Drapery panels trimmed in bold tape hung from the ceiling and created the illusion of a four-poster, while the absence of pattern kept the room rooted firmly in the present. Gleaming elements, from glass lamps to mirrored finishes, added a bit of sparkle.

Heather Dew ber ry and Will Huff, Huff-Dew ber ry, Inc. A second guest suite revealed an exercise in confident color, and the Tree of Life fabric hanging over the bed inspired the room’s color scheme. “We thought that a bed hanging would help cocoon the room and make the ceiling height cozier,” says Heather Dewberry. The upholstered headboard and footboard were inspired by a classic Parish Hadley design, and helped create a sumptuous feel. “You can take risks in a guest room that you may not normally take elsewhere,” she says. The powder room repeated the bedroom’s fresh aqua tone, with a patterned wallpaper enveloping the space. Huff-Dewberry extended the marble backsplash to surround the mirror in a wide frame, adding structure and contrast to the wallpaper. Polished sconces, hung directly on the vanity mirror, added sparkle to the cheerful space. “Luminous bits throughout the space brighten the room and help bring it into today,” Dewberry says.

Lady’s Retreat
Chery l Wom ack & A lison Wom ack Jow ers, Wom ack Inter iors
Sophisticated and bold with a fresh and fun feel, the lady’s retreat was also notable for its delicate details and an invigorating color palette. A choice spot for relaxation, Cheryl Womack and daughter Alison Womack Jowers fashioned a space with dinstinct personality thanks to handpainted fabrics and plush leather and hide accents. Jowers says she chose the room’s coral palette because she adores the hue: “The combination of coral and pink is yummy, the wheat is grounding and the black adds depth and dimension,” she says.

A bedroom tucked away under the eaves presented designer Allison Hennessy with the challenges of a dormered ceiling. “Rooms like these are an opportunity to use wallpaper, since there’s no space to hang art,” she says. A playful, abstract pink and white pattern swathed the walls and set the tone for the feminine space. A fanciful ceiling light fixture inspired Hennessy to repeat the arched motif around the room, on both the daybed design and an arched awning at the windows. Striking a balance between the playful and energetic, even the desk area boasts sophisticated flair.

Laundry Room
K ar en Ferguson, H ar r ison Design Associates
Sunny, hand-painted tile in an adjacent powder room inspired Karen Ferguson to extend the ochre color palette into the laundry room. “In a family home like this one, you spend a lot of time in here, so the room needed to be warm and inviting,” she says. Ferguson also ingeniously wove in space for a dog bed within the cabinetry and adorned the flooring with unexpectedly chic penny cork tiles.
Powder Room
K ar en Ferguson, H ar r ison Design Associates With an industrial-type sink with double faucets, the powder room was uniquely suited to washing muddy hands. The sunny decorative tile inspired the adjacent laundry room’s color scheme and gave the utilitarian space a richly traditional appeal. Wrought-iron sconces reinforced the old-world ambiance.
A rambling Colonial-style Buckhead abode set the stage for the brilliant execution of carte blanche throughout the interiors.

Office
R ick A nthon y Bonner , insidesign
Tucked into a secluded corner of the rear hallway, the home office provided privacy and minimal distraction for correspondence, work and family management. “A home office must be a comfortable and desirable haven for productive work, with the ability to become a respite from the activity of public areas when needed,” says designer Rick Anthony Bonner. Plentiful storage under the desk surface kept clutter out of sight.

For the family command center, Rick Anthony Bonner envisioned the mudroom and adjacent home office as highly functional spaces. The shiplap paneling of the mudroom gave it an air of casual efficiency. A row of lockers for each family member, with drawers for off-season storage below, are connected by a built-in bench while not one, but three clocks “keep a busy family running on schedule,” he says.

Outdoor Garden
A lex Smith Gar den Design
Just beyond this home’s outdoor living room, Alex Smith created an outdoor garden delineated by a gravel pathway edged in Cherokee stone, which contained plantings of boxwood globes, sarcococca, autumn ferns, sasanquas, and nandinas. “We created the central pattern out of ajuga and dwarf acorus groundcovers,” says landscape designer Lacey Gibbons, “and filled a glazed urn with cut branches of deciduous holly to create a colorful focal point.”
Outdoor Living Room Stev e McK enzie, Stev e McK enzie’s
Steve McKenzie took advantage of the remarkable innovations in outdoor furniture and fabric design to create an outdoor retreat that could be used in every season. He chose the teal blue, green and natural wood tones from the surrounding garden and added splashes of orange and paprika to reflect the autumnal leaves. “I love the outdoor fabrics by Laurie Bell,” he says. “They have the feel of cut velvet but function outdoors. I wanted the outdoor areas to be an extension of the beautiful interiors, to be comfortable and welcoming like the home itself.” 93

MARCIA SHERRILL
Life … According to Marcia OUR SENIOR CONTRIBUTING EDITOR REVEALS WHAT’S ON HER RADAR THIS MONTH
February must-visit ... The 2014 Cathedral Antiques Show, where you’ll spot me rummaging through the Vintage Linens by Lois stall. (Shhh…don’t give me away! I’ll be inconspicuous in a top hat and combat boots.) You may also spy me at the lecture by Bobby McAlpine and Susan Ferrier.
The best thing I just ate ... A lunchtime treat of pimento cheese toast with smoked ham hock at Watershed on Peachtree.
I’ve gone gaga for ... Classic Oxfords and Clarks Wallabees. I am not kown as an outdoorsy type, so I’ll rock them with lace shorts and Wolford stockings from Neimans.
I’ve been on the hunt for… A Syrie Maugham sofa—love the tufting. Comfort? Who cares!
I am headed off to ... Barcelona to shoot cool places for my travel website, avenue822.com, and my new YouTube channel, World Of Design. I’ll stalk some architectural marvels by Gaudí, even though with his NeoBraoque style, he is considered just that—gaudy. London for the trade show Top Drawer London, where we showed our Anabelle by Marcia Sherrill handbags and tortured unsuspecting Brits. clockwise from top left Royal Street Gisele handbag, $60, at Anabelle by Marcia Sherrill, annabellebymarciasherrill.com. Interior designer Susan Ferrier. Watershed on Peachtree. Alice + Olivia scalloped lace shorts, $297, at Neiman Marcus, neimanmarcus.com. Syrie Maugham sofa by Mariette Himes Gomez at Hickory Chair, hickorychair.com. La Sagrada Familia designed by Antoni Gaudí.
