Having planted nearly 100,000 trees since its inception in 1985, Trees Atlanta continues to hunt for ways to rid our surroundings of invasive species, while reducing the need for toxic herbicides and preserving our native plant life in the process. Last summer, Trees Atlanta (treesatlanta. org) augmented its popular Urban Goats program with 100 new sheep, kicking off the program at Chastain Park. Protected by shepherd Brian Cash and a group of guard dogs, the hungry flock munches up to 150 cubic feet of kudzu, privet, wisteria and English ivy a day—of great benefit to the nation’s most heavily forested urban area. The second phase of the two-year partnership continues throughout this year, when the sheep will tackle greenspaces including Chastain Park, Morningside Nature Preserve and Freedom Parkway at the Carter Center. Naomi von Habersham Do you realize that this month marks the 20th anniversary of the Blizzard of ’93? It’s hard to believe that two decades have passed since Atlanta suffered through the storm that dumped two feet of snow on us! I remember the blizzard well; in fact, I still get perturbed thinking about it. Before the storm hit, I had spent two weeks preparing for a dinner party that I was to host. I had pored over my cookbooks by Nathalie Dupree, Craig Claiborne and Lee Bailey, compiling a menu that I thought sounded tasty. I had shopped for groceries at Harry’s, ordered over-the-top floral arrangements from Marvin Gardens and even bought a new outfit from Snooty Hooty for the occasion. And then, the day before my party, Channel 2’s Glenn Burns informed us that a blizzard was on the way and was expected to blanket the city with not inches, but feet, of snow. I simply couldn’t believe it, so I turned to Channel 5’s Ken Cook. His forecast was the same. And, you know, if both Glenn and Ken give the same forecast, it’s a fait accompli. Well, what could I do? I had beef tenderloin and crab meat in the fridge, a case of Veuve Clicquot in my wine cooler, and two dozen Rhodes Bakery cheese straws in the pantry. I told myself that a blizzard couldn’t possibly hit Atlanta. But, it did. Snow fell and the power promptly went out. No dinner party. No TV. No Ken and Glenn to get me through the storm of the century. All I had to subsist on was some Champagne, cheese straws, Triscuits and cans of Underwood Deviled Ham Spread. Let me tell you, there is nothing glamorous about sitting around your frigid house for days, huddled next to the fi replace while wearing a Blackgama coat and Dearfoam slippers. “I like to showcase the natural taste in local foods, and this aromatic dish is the perfect example. Start by combining minced shallots, chopped jalapeno, juicy navel and sweet blood oranges and red grapefruit. Toss with a little avocado oil, sea salt and cracked black pepper. Then dice up a fresh avocado in large chunks and mix in. Tuck the mixture into an endive leaf and top with fresh wild lump crab. Lastly, fresh cilantro or basil is a must for the garnish!” –Ashley Clemence, Graft
“Vegetarian avocado tacos are a favorite of mine. I cut a Haas avocado into eight wedges and dip them in buttermilk. Next, roll the wedges in Japanese panko bread crumbs before frying in canola oil. When the avocado is golden brown, I season it with salt and finish the taco with crispy queso cotija, oven roasted tomatoes and spicy poblano chile pesto; it’s all wrapped in fresh homemade corn tortillas. When an idea becomes reality, it is an amazing t hing. Almost 10 years ago, I thought of a great magazine concept. Why not create a travel magazine focused on health? This idea was somewhat selfish because it combined my passions: travel, fitness and health. It came into focus over the last few years while I have been traveling more frequently for work and with my three children. The realization of this dream occurred when I met Gina Christman, publisher of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. As we sat on the beach, I told her about my desire to launch Healthy Travel magazine. Is there a better setting to pitch a magazine idea? To say the least, she loved it. It was the perfect fit since Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles has been very successful with Travel South, a digestsize publication published quarterly. Since leisure travel is so appealing to its current readers, Healthy Travel is now replacing Travel South, and it will be published in March, May, September and December 2013.

Spa Cocktails
Herbal teas and lemon-infused spring water may be beverage basics, but now spas are adding beverages with even more benefits to their menus. Five wellness-inspired cocktails served at the Old Edwards Inn and Spa in Highlands, North Carolina, include refreshing blends of beet juice, broccoli, cucumber, herbs and edible flowers with a kick from vodka, tequila, rum, brandy or even moonshine. The garden green-colored Hummingbird cocktail features vodka muddled with fresh pea shoots, a splash of local honey and a flowering pea tendril garnish. Because the drinks are made with vitamin- and antioxidant-rich fresh fruit and vegetables, they count as a health and beauty treatment, too. What you won’t find in these potent potables, however, is a lot of alcohol; each drink calls for only an ounce or so of spirits. “We are trying to focus on flavor and nutrition with less alcohol,” says executive chef Johannes Klapdohr. “That way, you can enjoy the beverage without hitting the wall.” Massages, facials, saunas and steam baths may be the main focus during spa time, but resorts are raising the food-and-beverage bar with menus designed to complement the restorative experience.

One of the largest of the ancient Maya regions of Mesoamerica, the Riviera Maya—and all its postapocalyptic letdown—may not be the fi rst place that comes to mind when you imagine a restorative retreat. It was, after all, at the heart of the Mayan prediction that the world would meet its doom on 12/21/12. We’re all still here, of course, and that’s really no surprise given most Mayans never actually believed the world would end on the epically dreaded date, only that the date marked the end of one long calendar and the start of another. This is one of many things I learned on a recent trip to Playa del Carmen, one of the Riviera Maya’s most exclusive coastal gems. Like the rest of this area, Playa del Carmen has exploded with authentic, Mayan-inspired rituals and treatments that prepare the mind, body, and spirit for a brand-new start. Abundant in the months leading up to 12/21/12, and picking up speed with renewed fervor since the start of the new Mayan calendar, these authentic, soulful experiences can be found at every type of resort in Playa del Carmen, from value-focused, all-inclusives like Sandos Caracal Eco Resort & Spa (from $260; sandos.com) to the ultra-luxe Rosewood Mayakoba (from $768; rosewoodhotels.com). I arrived at the 41-villa, adults-only boutique Viceroy Riviera Maya in search of spiritual rejuvenation and a more personal experience (villas from $468;
viceroyhotelsandresorts.com). From the moment I set foot on the lush canopied paths of my jungle-wrapped home away from home—one of 11 new luxury villas sprawling some 1,700 square feet—the resort felt to me like one giant present waiting to be unwrapped. The most obvious present was revealed as the jungle opened up to the bright white beach and turquoise sea. The first gift came just after I landed at the resort, with a happenstance stumble upon a shaman blessing. Ogling the candlelit, mystical Wayak Spa en route to my room, I met the resident shaman who prayed over me as he waved smoking herbs to help purge bad energy. From the incredibly calming and exotic copal incense wafting throughout the resort and my private backyard oasis—complete with a plunge pool—to the meditative paths leading to quiet groves for art-making and journaling, I felt the internal field clearing and my soul quietly opening. The spa’s reputation preceded itself, and I couldn’t wait for the 90-minute, shaman-led temazcal, a traditional Mayan sweat lodge ceremony that uses steam and healing herbs to purify the body and spirit. I was hooked at the start as we prayed to the seven Mayan
gods for blessings before entering the warmed adobe, symbolic of Mother Nature’s womb. Later, I visited the spa again for a tzolkin massage, which incorporated healing herbs that were brushed vigorously against my body. The setting was gorgeous and relaxing, with a secluded, candlelit wood platform shrouded in white mosquito netting and situated next to a small waterfall. Beyond the resort’s many Mayan offerings, including a detox program ranging anywhere from three hours to two days, there were plenty of healthy experiences in which to indulge. Morning vinyassa flow yoga on the Viceroy’s private pier was a favorite, but my days stayed effortlessly active with excursions that included snorkeling along the second largest barrier reef in the world and biking the archaeological site of Cobá, where you can climb Nohoch Mul, the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan. With each day that passed, I found myself feeling reinvigorated, reflective, and grateful. Returning home, the collective feeling amounted to something akin to true balance, which may just be a hidden Mayan message.

LETTER FROM PRESIDENT & TOUR OF KITCHENS CHAIR Dear Friends and Patrons, Since 1997, when the Junior League of Atlanta held its first Tour of Kitchens, the event has grown exponentially and is now a two-day tour featuring 14 homes with amazing kitchens and our Toast of the Tour kick-off party equally as amazing. Now celebrating our 16th year, the Tour of Kitchens has evolved into the Junior League of Atlanta’s largest event fundraiser, raising more than $1 million to support the mission of the Junior League of Atlanta (JLA). Our mission is to educate and empower Atlanta’s women and children to not only be self-sufficient, but to succeed. The Junior League of Atlanta is the third largest Junior League chapter in the world, with nearly 4,000 members. We serve as a much-needed volunteer resource and catalyst for positive change through our partnerships with more than 80 nonprofit organizations in Atlanta. This year, JLA members will provide over 75,000 volunteer hours to our Atlanta area partners, an investment worth almost $2 million. And, through our Tour of Kitchens fundraiser proceeds, we will be able to further our reach and ability to directly benefit women and children at risk.

DAVID LAMONT - In addition to spending as much time as possible geeking out over the extraction percentages of siphon pots, David is busy building new partnerships with wholesale customers in and around the greater Atlanta area. He’s been on the customer support team for Counter Culture since 2006, but before landing in the Big Peach he spent three years living in Japan, and since then has become an expert on all of Georgia’s best ramen joints. He’s also an avid gardener and used a portion of his Counter Culture Green Fund benefit to grow raised beds for the vegetables he uses in the delicious meals he loves cooking for his family. David and his wife Cathy live with their two children, Aya and Ian, in a suburb of Atlanta called Sugar Hill – aptly named for how sweet they all are.
EMILY DAVIS - From computer geek to coffee nerd, complexity has always captivated Emily’s attention. She got her first taste of the specialty coffee world while working at Land of a Thousand Hills coffee house in 2008. By 2010, she stopped teetering between IT and coffee and joined the coffee team of Empire State South. Here, she was encouraged to develop the coffee program to match each specialty of the restaurant. Through these endeavors, in 2012, Emily was recognized by Star Chefs as the Rising Star Barista of Atlanta. Shortly thereafter, Emily joined the Counter Culture Atlanta team where she now serves as the customer representative of the Atlanta region. Emily and her fellow coffee-driver husband, Matthew of Condesa Coffee live in Grant Park where they happily plan to use coffee to take over the world. 11:30 A.M. RON EYESTER, EXECUTIVE CHEF & OWNER - New York native, Ron Eyester, came to Atlanta, and shortly after was settled in with 101 Concepts as the sous chef of the original Food 101. His many years with them prepared him for this next phase of his restaurant career as Executive Chef and Owner of Rosebud and The Family Dog. Although the kitchen is the foundation of this passion, Ron has always been intrigued by restaurant operation and its ever evolving culture.
2 P.M. EMILY MYERS - Founded Emily G’s out of a true labor of love, which through hobby and happenstance became an award winning specialty food business. Emily left her career as a counselor in the mid 2000s to pursue her dream of becoming a chef. While studying at the Midwest Culinary Institute in Cincinnati she apprenticed at the Mt. Adam’s Fish House and worked as sous chef at Chokolate Morel in Mason, Ohio. Emily G’s started as a simple playdate. Emily Myers and her neighbor took their preschool children strawberry picking at Washington Farms in April of 2008. After picking more than they could eat, they made their first batch of strawberry jam. After sharing it with family and friends, the requests for more started rolling in. Now Emily G’s jams can be found in farmers markets, online, and in retail locations nationwide. She continues to teach classes at Cooks Warehouse in Atlanta, and her class, Cooking 101, was recently featured on CNN.com. Emily G’s has grown from its humble beginning of selling four jam flavors at a farmers’ market; to currently selling 18 jam flavors, sauces and relish. The jams have been praised everywhere from Bon Appétit to the Wall Street Journal. Most recently, Myers won a sofi Silver Finalist award for her Three Pepper relish.

JOSH HOPKINS, EXECUTIVE CHEF STG TRATTORIA - Josh Hopkins: A self-taught Chef first working in Charleston, SC at both Slightly North of Broad and High Cotton, Josh relocated to Atlanta to cook under Anne Quatrano at Star Provision’s Bacchanalia. Soon after, he opened Bacchanalia’s sister restaurant Abattoir, serving as Executive Chef, where he was lauded for his meat-centric “whole animal” style of cooking. Josh now holds the Executive Chef position at STG Trattoria.
12:30 P.M. JONATHAN St. HILAIRE, EXECUTIVE CHEF THE LAWRENCE GROUP - Classically trained at the French Culinary Institute, St. Hilaire began his career in New York City’s finest restaurants. After moving to Atlanta, St. Hilaire has worked at award winning kitchens such as Canoe, Spice, The Four Seasons Hotel, Woodfire Grill and Bakeshop. Once named “Best New American Chef in Atlanta” by Bon Appetit, St. Hilaire is best known as one of Atlanta’s premiere pastry chefs. His recent appointment at The Lawrence marks his return to savory cooking for the first time in over a decade.

It was during her formal education that she developed a passion for pastry. She was fascinated with the scientific nature of the field, and her success was based on both passion and perfectionism. Originally the executive pastry chef at Canoe from 1998-2004, Sara became accustomed to the restaurant’s high standards and truly unique dining experience before relocating to Ohio to create her own catering business, Something Special Cuisine LLC. Returning to Canoe in July 2011, Chef Koob assists in developing current and regionally relevant dessert items for the menu while creating breads to complement and complete main dishes and appetizers. With true expertise and attention to precise details she prepares beautiful and delicious desserts and fresh breads that create a well-rounded finish to every meal. 1:30 P.M. ROBERT GERSTENECKER, EXECUTIVE CHEF - A 19-year veteran of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Robert Gerstenecker joined Park 75 as executive chef in 2004, which was his culinary dream come true. A former executive sous chef at Four Seasons Atlanta from 1998-2002, he helped open Park 75 and played an instrumental role in developing the menu. After four years in Atlanta, he moved to Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach and mastered the use of tropical ingredients and cooking with seafood. In between, he also worked in Hong Kong as the chef at Quo Quo, which he helped open and developed a French menu using Asian ingredients. A native of Ontario, he gained an appreciation for food from his mother. One of his favorite pastimes is planting and harvesting his own crops. In fact, Robert created a garden and bee apiary on the hotel’s fifth-floor terrace, and he incorporates his rooftop produce into the menu. He is thrilled to be living his dream as an executive Chef. 3 P.M. BARBARA O’NEILL, OWNER - Worked for a New York law firm as the director of information systems until she and her husband moved to Atlanta in 1996. In order to spend time with her young son, she did not return to work but rather served as a full-time volunteer providing computer support to the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children. In this role, she was responsible for the rapid expansion of technology resources available at the shelter. The inspiration for her cookie business came in 2005 after reading a magazine article about three women who had left their careers and opened cookie businesses. She had the valuable baking skills from spending hours in the kitchen with her mom and she uses those skills today to create the wonderful cookies and treats produced daily at The Cookie Studio. Combining her passion for baking with her commitment to the shelter, she has built a business that produces award-winning treats while also providing ongoing financial support to the shelter.

The house itself, designed by Keith Summerour with his usual creative flair and built by Noah and Associates, sits in a wooded lot bordering a large equestrian park. Both the unique location and the beautiful structure of the house, full of charming surprises inside and out (one of the hallmarks of the architect), required a kitchen design that did not disappoint. The challenge was to devise a beautiful working kitchen in a tight location that was at the heart of the home, opening into a large family room on one side, a formal living room on another, and on a third side leading to a wet bar and dining room. The perimeter cabinets are painted in a hand-brushed enamel (Benjamin Moore Old Prarie), while the island design is a custom gray wash over natural cypress devised by the cabinetmakers. A thick oak island countertop by Morgan Creek echoes the wide oak plank flooring, while the leaded glass cabinet doors carefully blend with the beautiful large windows over the sink. Cabinet knobs are in patinated iron from Whitechapel, Ltd, selected by interior designer Liza Bryan.

When designing their new home, Brian and Nicola McCarthy knew that the kitchen would be the most important room in the house. They wanted a true “chef ’s kitchen” with plenty of room to work and top of the line appliances but which still felt warm and cozy. In stepped the design team of Julia Stainback-Hess of Stainback-Hess Studio, Tommy Caswell of Brookwood Kitchens, Inc. and Gary Dresser of Dresser Homes. Working together, the team created a very elegant, yet workable kitchen. The centerpiece of the kitchen is its large island which provides a generous workspace on one side and seating for four on the other. The most eye-catching feature of the island though is its beautiful Calcutta Vaticano marble counters. An iron chandelier lights the two large marble slabs that are “bookmatched” to create a gorgeous artistic effect. The sink is located in the center of the island allowing the cook to maintain casual conversations while putting the final touches on the meal. Behind the island is the cooking area with focal point being the Wolf Range. Above the range is a custom designed stucco hood, inspired by the homes exterior veneer. The counters in this area are honed soapstone. To enhance the open feel of the kitchen, there are open shelves flanking the hood, no upper cabinets, and the entire backsplash wall is covered with limestone. The slate stained cabinets are furniture quality and embrace the soapstone counters and the limestone wall. Adding to the coziness of the kitchen are the antique rough hewn timbers above and the chiseled edge hickory floors below. The overall effect is a kitchen which is suitable for the most demanding chef yet maintains a casual, inviting feel. This kitchen embodies the successful collaboration of Builder, Architect, and Designer to create a truly elegant and functional kitchen.

This kitchen was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2013 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Annual Kitchen Contest. Interlocking elements and contrasting textures are the core of this renovation. Overlapping materials draw and guide you through the space and around the corners. Carved out ceilings create a sense of space and height, and eliminate the ubiquitous can lights that detract from most other kitchens. Ironically the dark cherry cabinets were installed by HammerSmith in an earlier renovation (featured on the 2003 Junior League Tour of Kitchens!) and were left as a backdrop to frame the new kitchen. The new owners wanted more light, more drama and more connectivity with the pool. The NanaWall creates a seamless transition and blurs the line between inside and outside. White-on-white tile and cabinet textures play with the natural light and create shadows of interest. Warm wood floors and dark accents contrast with the stainless steel and cool marble to create a sense of warmth and comfort in the otherwise sparse, modern envelope.

They fell in love with this 1940s home based on its great curb appeal and the ability to add a second floor for guest rooms. Michael Bell of Bell Cabinetry and Design Studio collaborated with the homeowners to create a small yet professional kitchen that seamlessly integrated into their primary living spaces. The simple elegance of this eternally classic kitchen combines the clean lines of flush-inset cabinetry with marble countertops, highlighting a dramatic wall of Tuileries Arabesque tile. The kitchen is outfitted with professional appliances combined with unique pullouts and storage solutions throughout. The wet bar and pantry extending off the kitchen provide an abundance of additional storage while also serving as a staging area to the dining room. One of the key design elements within the kitchen is the extra-large sliding glass doors reminiscent of an 18th century butler’s pantry. Living in beautiful historic Druid Hills doesn’t always mean living with a fantastic kitchen. When the homeowners purchased this classic 1920s brick two-story, the original kitchen was gone, replaced by a poorly laid out, dark and cramped space. At the same time, the homeowners wanted to add a master suite, new family room and access to the beautifully landscaped yard. All was accomplished as part of a major addition and renovation while adhering to strict style constraints aimed to protect the historic character of the home and neighborhood. Renewal Design-Build’s program focused on creating a large, open kitchen where family and friends had room to gather, cook and socialize. By enlarging the kitchen for the work areas and island, additional space was created at the rear of the house for a brightly lit breakfast area. The kitchen has wide access to a new adjoining family room and the original formal dining room. Design details of this award-winning kitchen were inspired by the home’s classic architecture. The rich custom cherry cabinets with a raised panel door contrast with the bright Kashmir white granite countertops and glamorous crackle and glass tile backsplash. 2197 Lebaron Drive NE,Atlanta, GA 30345 About the Kitchen Set among the treetops overlooking a ravine, this major remodel of an existing 1960s home shows what can be done with the ubiquitous ranch house. The original kitchen had never been improved, was cramped, isolated from the living areas and totally cut off from the spectacular view. Axios expanded the kitchen, raised the ceiling with linear clerestory windows for natural light and made it flow with the rest of the home. The core of the kitchen is a circular center island and circular breakfast table. The perimeter is a combination of full height cabinets and appliances to create a working wall, a combination of cabinets and counters for cooking and food prep and finally the large view windows surrounding the eat-in booth. The clerestory windows provide balanced natural light deep into the kitchen. The raised ceiling uses a simple layered sheetrock detail that culminates in the display niche at the clerestory level. Stained mahogany provides a warm, furniture grade atmosphere to the space. The custom eat-in table, also designed by Axios, is made from the same mahogany. The warm wood is complemented by the cool blues of the backsplash tile and light fixtures. A compact, but hard working “drop zone” at the rear door makes a gracious daily entrance from the carport. It also provides a locker space for each family member, appropriate charging stations and a bench for getting shoes off the feet before dirt comes into the house. The drop zone also doubles as a butler’s pantry between the kitchen and dining room, with glass front cabinets and a highlighted display niche. Careful attention to detail makes what might be a utilitarian space an elegant daily entry for the homeowners.

Born in Tampa, he cooked at home and worked in restaurants as a teenager. Encouraged by his love for the industry and natural skill, he graduated with a culinary arts degree from Johnson and Wales University in Charleston. David first became involved with the Taqueria del Sol organization in 1994 while working at Sundown Café. In 1998, he and his wife headed west, taking a chef position at Mark Miller’s Coyote Café in Santa Fe and the catering company used by NBC for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. He still remembers exactly how Ahmad Rashad likes his salmon cooked. Keeping in touch with Taqueria del Sol CEO, Mike Klank, he returned to Atlanta and Taqueria del Sol in 2002. As director of Sol Catering, he manages and cooks for off-site and catering events, so the restaurants can focus on their in-house guest.

Dan comes from farming families of Mississippi and the Ozarks, and is known best around Atlanta for Moto Bene, his seasonally-sourced mobile pizza oven. He cut his culinary teeth working with Mario Batali in New York for many years with various operations including Po, The Food Network and Studio del Gusto of Italian Wine Merchants, out of which he produced Babbo’s charcuterie program. After New York, he opened his own spot in Oxford Mississippi, L&M’s Kitchen & Salumeria as well as Pancetta Ranch, a small custom butcher shop to compliment, for which he earned a James Beard Nomination for Best Chef South. He most recently has been working as a consultant in sustainable meat sourcing and restaurant operations for clients such as Jim N Nick’s BBQ, the Eat Real Festival of Oakland and Los Angeles, and Burger Up of Nashville.

KIMMIE WILLIS - Has had a flair for Southern cooking her entire life, whether it was growing up in Memphis, TN, cooking at O’Charley’s at 15 or receiving instruction at The Art Institute in NYC. Kimmie is a mostly self-taught talent. In 2010, Chef Kimmie began working as a live-in chef for legendary Memphis rapper Lil Wyte of Hypnotized Minds, touring with his Wyte Music Records label as well. It was during this time Kimmie received attention from Fox’s hit reality TV program Hell’s Kitchen starring the fiery Gordon Ramsay. After submitting her replies and passing a series of interviews, Chef Kimmie finally received the call to begin filming the 10th season of Hell’s Kitchen. Filming ended July 2011, however, it wouldn’t air until June 2012, creating almost an entire year of anticipation. Chef Kimmie has been getting rave reviews from around the world as viewers have watched her learn how to make 5-star food, butcher down an entire cow- not. As for her next step after Hell’s Kitchen, Chef Kimmie has her sights set on the Lil Bitz catering company she will be starting with her fiancé Robert in addition to future travels and learning new cuisine. OLIVIER DE BUSSCHERE, EXECUTIVE SOUS CHEF - Originally from Antwerp, Belgium, chef de cuisine Olivier De Busschere honed his skills at Ter Groene Poorte in Bruges and Ter Duinen in Koksijde before receiving a culinary master’s degree from ACEBE in Antwerp. During his culinary education at ACEBE, he apprenticed under Chef Harry Van Rooij and Chef Ivo Van Geel at de Kleiene Barreel, Antwerp. Upon completion of his training, De Busschere became chef de partie and then chef de rottisseur at de Kleine Bareel before leaving to pursue a sous chef opportunity at Brasschaat Country Club in Brasschaat, Belgium, where he worked with chef Eric Willekens. Under the watchful eye of these masterful chefs, De Busschere developed several of the techniques for which he is known today as well as a comprehensive knowledge of contemporary cuisine.

About the Kitchen With a growing family, our client needed more room to enjoy family activities! The solution was to add a family room and master suite while enlarging the kitchen. The original living room has now become their large dining room and entrance foyer. The result is an open floor plan connecting the new breakfast room, family room and kitchen and providing terrific views of the back yard. The new side entrance to the kitchen sports a mud room with cubbies and a dutch door. The kitchen is large and light with a tray ceiling. Dark oak floors flow from the kitchen through all of the family space connecting it to the new family room with vaulted ceiling and fireplace. The new plan by architect Richard Stevens transforms this ranch house by integrating interior and exterior space with the family room, covered back porch and open patio. A large formal dining room provides the perfect space to enjoy family dinners and large parties. Addition of a covered porch on the front of the home and painting the brick completes the transformation. White cabinets with stunning marble counter tops contrast with the dark, warm hardwood floors. Stainless appliances accent the cabinetry for a beautiful cooking and entertaining center. Light stacked stone on the fireplace lends a contemporary flare to this classic home. Finally, and extraordinarily important to our busy homeowners, the entire addition and renovation only took five months to complete, from the day the water was turned off in the old kitchen to the day the owners were cooking dinner in their new space.

While the 3x6 ivory tumbled marble backsplash provides a neutral and unassuming background, the stunning Typhoon Bordeaux granite top takes center stage as the lead accent for this space.

About the Kitchen

This fresh and transitional kitchen is tucked within a newly built dwelling featuring traditional Tudor and Arts & Crafts influences. Working with homeowner Sarah Bayman, who recently launched her own interior design firm, the design team selected materials and finishes that would harmonize with the soothing scheme of the architecture. In classic Frank G. Neely Designs style, the room was executed in a monolithic style—a monotone white finish washing over ceiling beams, masterfully crafted cabinetry that soars all the way to the ceiling, a custom-crafted vent hood, and intricate shadow lines that come alive as the light shifts from day to night.

The continuity of these features is grounded by a border of leaded-glass accents along the ceiling, bringing considerable warmth and luxuriousness to the room. The same is true for the sleek metal picture window fronting the sink, which adds a clean, contemporary accent to a traditional setting. A six-inch band of gray-green granite on the island countertop frames a larger piece in the center to deliver a truly tailored look. The client selected all GE appliances in stainless steel, but several were concealed by custom panels that allow them to disappear into the surrounding cabinetry. The flooring is a wide-plank quarter sawn oak in a finish devised by builder Patrick Davey to offer an antique look. The interior designer/homeowner’s decisions were just as hands-on. From the highly textured granite used on the backsplash and perimeter countertops to the simple, yet high-contrast cabinet pulls, every element she chose harked back to the cohesive, comfortable, wellscaled and well-lit whole designed by Frank Neely, and brought to beautiful life by Patrick Davey. About the Kitchen After several years in China, the family relocated to Atlanta. Their new home, built in 1988, had an open floor plan but was ready for an upgrade. Given priority were the laundry room, pantry, and of course, the kitchen. Although the kitchen had plenty of space, the L-shaped island offered very little storage and the cooktop left little usable counter space. DCD created a timeless design, using a classic raised panel door and a subtle yet sophisticated color palette. The reconfigured island is great for food prep, buffet serving, and bar seating. The sink nestles into a bay window, with lighted glass cabinets to the ceiling, which showcase collectables from the family’s travels. Moving the cooktop against the wall with a chimney-style wood hood created a sculptural focal point while maintaining a clean line around the room. The breakfast room was large enough for a dry bar, again with glass cabinets for more collectables and barware.

About the Kitchen Initially this kitchen renovation was supposed to be a “replace and refresh”, but once the design team convinced the homeowners to remove one wall making the kitchen six feet longer, a dramatically different kitchen was designed. The two arched front yard facing windows were originally part of a narrow laundry room. When the wall between the kitchen and laundry room was removed, the dramatic arched windows bookended the 48” wide Wolf range and the bronze and limestone hood. The over nine-foot island, topped with black walnut, holds a microwave drawer, icemaker, mixer lift and refrigerated drink drawers among other storage. The original walk-in pantry was left intact but is now disguised with antique mirrored panels similar to those used to cover the Subzero and tall dish pantry. Reclaimed wood wall cupboards hang over a custom server complete with charging station drawers for each of the three family members. Multiple lighting scenes can be created with the combination of the three unique iron and linen pendants over the island, three wall sconces and the new low voltage recessed cans. Borneo marble countertops with an antique finish on the perimeter were the perfect find to marry the home’s color palette and the bronze and copper finishes of the hood, plumbing, lighting fixtures and decorative hardware. Painted cabinets and the glazed ceramic backsplash tile provide a clean backdrop for all the different textures, colors, and sheens in this impressive kitchen transformation.

About the Kitchen
For these Roswell homeowners, we created a light, bright kitchen that is a pleasure for cooking and entertaining. They requested a larger island with seating, a gas rangetop with good ventilation, a larger window to let in more light, a place for a television, and an elegant ambiance for entertaining guests—all without adding to the footprint of the house. Redesigning the kitchen without a peninsula gave us plenty of room for a large island. The one level island serves multiple functions—not only does it have plenty of storage and workspace, and seating for a quick meal, but it makes a perfect buffet for a party. The hood, flanked by tall countertop units, and the Wolf rangetop, with spice pullouts disguised with legs, is the focal point at the end of the room. We shifted the dining room doors to the left a bit to create more space. In addition, the refrigerator location was moved to the back wall with other tall units—one to house the Wolf convection microwave, single oven and warming drawer, and one for pantry storage. To maximize the light, double arched windows were removed in favor of one large window. We worked with the existing window cutout to avoid exterior stucco repair. The cabinets feature a soft cream finish with glazing on maple wood for the perimeter cabinets to keep the room light, and the island cabinets are in cherry with a mahogany stain for contrast. Gorgeous Splendor Delicatus granite with a demi-bullnose edge pulls both colors together. Behind the rangetop, the granite rises to a shallow ledge. The backsplash was done in a warm glazed subway tile picking up the color from the granite with a framed accent under the hood. The wood flooring was refinished in a darker stain to match other areas of the house. For the television, we designed a multi-use space with storage, wine racks and room for a flat-screen TV that can be viewed from the breakfast area and kitchen.

Lending a helping hand to women and children of the Atlanta community since 1916. The Junior League of Atlanta was organized 96 years ago, with just 45 members. Today, the JLA is the third largest Junior League in the world with a membership numbering nearly 4,000 members. Designer Susan Ferrier’s deft design hand—and balancing act—is evident in homeowner Mary Prillaman’s living room, where a collection of charcoal botanicals anchors an elegant seating arrangement that includes a commanding Holland & Company Chesterfield sofa. An upholstered screen frames it, adding texture and dimension to the space. A University of the South uniform from Prillaman’s great grandfather—one of three Prillaman found in her grandmother’s attic—takes pride of place above the mantel, and was the jumping point for Ferrier’s color palette. WHEN YOU’RE IN THE ANTIQUES BUSINESS,
each piece is personal. There’s an emotional connection, fond memory or unique story attached to every object. And when living and breathing fi ne design is your trade, as it is for Mary Prillaman, owner of MacRae and Holland & Company, it’s almost by default that you become an avid collector in the process. Seventeenth- and 18th-century portraits, corner chairs, hat stands, English water fi lters, creamware, pewter—Prillaman’s collections are as numerous as they are exquisite. But they are also carefully curated, just like the company she keeps. Enter Susan Ferrier of McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors, to whom Prillaman had the pleasure of being introduced through a collaboration on a furniture line for MacRae with Ferrier’s colleague, architect Bobby McAlpine. A design dream team, McAlpine, Ferrier and Prillaman hit it off famously—and ultimately led to Prillaman enlisting the designer to become 117

An artfully arranged collection of creamware and pewter adds to the play between darks and lights in the dining room. “Susan is the best colorist in the business,” says Prillaman, who, after she had already enlisted Ferrier for the project, pored through a file of inspirational tear sheets only to find that most of them were the designer’s projects. Ferrier chose a midnight blue hue—Benjamin Moore’s Westcott Navy—for the room’s walls and ceiling to complement the gorgeous woods from Prillaman’s antiques. The chairs are upholstered in a damask by Nobilis.

A pecky cypress ceiling is the showstopper in the renovated kitchen, the perfect textural counterpoint to tall, sleek cabinets. For the room’s renovation and space planning, Prillaman collaborated with Beth Barfield Designs. Ferrier made the space as refined as it is relaxing thanks to furniture selections like the MacCall table from MacRae, complete with McAlpine Home bar stools, and one of Prillaman’s favorite pieces, McAlpine’s fliptop highboy, topped with a sampling of her ceramic English water filter collection. The cabinets are painted in Farrow & Ball’s French Gray. Appliances, Wolf and Sub-Zero.

And where many designers might have been overwhelmed by the sheer spectrum of choices—Prillaman has a warehouse fi lled with benchmade pieces from her businesses as well as her own impeccable fi nds—Ferrier was nonplussed, committing herself to fi nding and using only pieces Prillaman could truly not live without, regardless of the period or style. Of particularly sentimental value were a trio of University of the South uniforms, worn by her great-grandfather, which Prillaman found stuffed in a bag in her grandmother’s attic. After having the coats cleaned, repaired and preserved in shadow boxes, she knew she wanted the collection to play a role in her home’s redesign, but it was Ferrier who envisioned the uniforms’ blue-andtan hues as the jumping point for the home’s palette. Next, the designer’s task was to create a sophisticated but livable environment for this serious collector, without it appearing too much like a showroom. “When your life is about furniture, you have to be careful. In your own home, there must be a little bit of a departure,” says Ferrier. Even so, the pair looked at pieces in Prillaman’s lines that would be “good ambassadors in tying in the new with the old,” she says. 121

If there’s one room that best captures this delicate balance, it’s the dining room, where color, pattern and texture imbue the intimate space with a rich, multi-layered patina only Ferrier could accomplish. Here, a commanding Holland & Company dining table draws energy from skirted feminine chairs and a cowhide banquette, while floor-to-ceiling draperies, along with a floating mirror, add architectural structure. It’s in the details, though, that Ferrier’s deft balance of old and new, light and dark, hard and soft, reigns. “When you’re working with a lot of different influences, it’s important to pay attention to where things are placed as you don’t want them to appear redundant or out of place,” she says. Instead, the designer imbued the house with a sense of rhythm, weaving Prillaman’s prized collections from room to room in such a way that they not only appear unified when separated, they also make the rooms feel crisp, clean, and above all, memorable. “From the moment you walk in, you can tell a really interesting person lives here,” Ferrier says. To increase closet space in the circa-1920s house, Prillaman and Ferrier transformed a former sleeping porch into an organized space for her color-coordinated wardrobe, shoes, collection of hat stands and more. “I think of clothing as a backdrop for shoes and jewelry,” says Prillaman of her personal style. “The larger and more unique the jewelry is, the happier I am.” In the master bedroom, a 17th-century reproduction Italian iron bed by Gregorius Pineo takes center stage. The white-on-white crewel fabric is by Old World Weavers. The lamps were designed from late-19th-century oak carvings. “I have so much respect for the heart and soul Susan puts into every interior,” Prillaman says. “We had total trust.”

fter losing out on three homes during an especially hot period in Florida real estate, Paul and Courtney Amos decided that the only way they were going to capture their dream home was to create it themselves. “We started driving down highway 30-A and when we got to Rosemary Beach, we stepped out of the car and turned 360 degrees,” Courtney says of the picture-perfect hamlet along Florida’s panhandle. “We didn’t have to say a thing. We knew it was perfect for us.” The community’s petite lot and neighborhood covenants dictated that the house’s architectural design would harken to a Charleston Single House-style residence. “We had to make every square inch livable and truly functional for this young family,” says residential designer Rick Spitzmiller, of the Atlanta architectural design fi rm Spitzmiller & Norris, who worked with business partner Robert Norris to design the home. “There are breakaway spaces for people to go off and have a moment of solitude, but overall the house encourages large gatherings and time together with family and friends,” he notes. In traditional Charleston Single House style, the fi rst floor is usually overlooked for the secondstory living spaces, but not so here. “We aimed to make every floor special,” says 129

In the kitchen, designed by Spitzmiller & Norris, the hewn beams of pecky cypress are each carved out of a single massive tree trunk, hundreds of year old, which was raised out of a swamp. “I really appreciate how special that is,” says homeowner Courtney Amos. “It’s very hard to find those types of indigenous materials.” The bell jar lanterns are available through Grizzel & Mann. Spitzmiller. “The staircase is open to really connect the house and keeps any floor from feeling cut off from another.” The main level contains the living room, kitchen and dining room. In reality, the floor is all one room, but each space is given the geometry, scale and thoughtful design to make it feel separate from the others. Large windows and doors open wide to let breezes blow through. “It’s a grand house for piling people in,” says Spitzmiller. However, it’s the living room ceiling that proves to be the home’s crowning architectural jewel. Inspired by a photo Courtney found in a book on early-20thcentury architect Addison Mizner’s Palm Beach homes, multiple pieces of molding incorporate each branch of the snowflakepatterned, panel strap-work ceiling. “You can’t help but sit and stare at the beauty of the raw wood,” says Courtney. With such a magnificent backdrop, the home’s decor had to be equally as captivating. “The architecture just demanded that we step it up a bit,” says Atlanta interior designer Carole Weaks of C. Weaks Interiors. “If we had not used strong antiques pieces and unique elements, it wouldn’t have suited the house nor the family.” Weaks traveled to France for the necessary pieces and special finds. She then focused on fabrics with personality over practicality—and then coated them with good fabric protectant to survive the harsh demands of beach life. After settling into the house for a year, the Amoses brought in Seacrest Beach designer Susan Massey of Bohlert Massey Interiors. “Susan brought in another layer of detail and a beachy feel,” says Courtney. “We had the privilege of working with an incredible team to build a new home that has some real history.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

LIFESTYLE Atlanta designer Carole Weaks shares a few of her beach house favorites Pantry Staples: I like to pick up a few things from Bella Cucina on the way out of town—they go perfectly with wine and cheese. China: I love simple white plates that you can get almost anywhere. If the children are grown, you can upgrade to something nice from Atelier de Villatte, which has a beautiful glaze. Throw: Brahms Mount linen throws are an ideal weight. Candle: Voluspa Laguna’s are great—even the name sounds good. Weekend Reading: Nothing too heavy or serious. ecorator Stan Topol knows his way around The St. Regis Atlanta Hotel & Residences.
Not only has he designed a number of model residences there, he also was recently charged with making some lifestyle enhancements to the hotel’s public spaces, including the lobby overlook that now features an elegant dining area. But it’s in one of the property’s private residences that you’ll fi nd Topol’s pièce de résistance. “The most marvelous thing about The St. Regis is that if you live there—and you have to live there to appreciate it—is that Atlanta is at your fingertips,” says Topol. The hotel’s central location on West Paces Ferry and its world-class amenities were what first lured his clients to purchase a residence there, but they relied on Topol to transform their house into a home for themselves and their two children. Assisted by architect Joel Laseter, Topol transformed a blank slate of a space into a series of jewel box-like rooms connected by a main corridor. “If people appreciate art, then their minds are open to the world,” says Topol. 138

“And, here, my clients understood that furniture is art and fabric is art, too.” The resulting collaboration was a match made in designer heaven. “In my business as a decorator, we do a lot of things, including compromise,” says Topol. “But in this apartment, the couple to allowed us to actually work with the best of everything—from the J. Robert Scott furniture and Baccarat crystal to Larry Rivers artwork. There were no shortcuts, no substitutions.” Finer things aside, Topol is quick to point out that elegance and comfort aren’t mutually exclusive in this apartment. “They allowed me the freedom to put together rooms where people will actually sit and talk and watch TV, rooms where they will have a life together,” he says. “This apartment is everything I believe in as a decorator.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

LIFESTYLE “Living at The St. Regis is better than having a house,” says decorator Stan Topol, who has worked on projects throughout the property. “Being here gives you the comforts of having a home, plus the security of being able to leave whenever you want.” Private elevator lobbies and concierge services are available to residences, and the views aren’t bad, either. Here, the design team worked to capture and enhance city views from the living room, family room and master bedroom. “You can create whatever you want when you buy here,” says Topol. “It’s a blank canvas.”

What makes an Atlanta house a HOME? In the third installment of our year-long series examining the things that are essential to every Atlanta residence, MARCIA SHERRILL nominates man’s best friend
In
the South, we love our children but we worship our dogs. Only the British monarchy with its brigade of corgis can rival us in our love of canines. Growing up, we used to shower with our dogs after a day at the lake, but now they get their own days at the spa. We serve them gourmet meals. They love all of our quirks, yet they never divorce us. We treat them like they are

human, but only better. My father was so crazy for his hunting dogs that, despite knowing they should not be treated as proper indoor pets, would sleep with four retrievers at his feet, leaving Momma with a sliver of mattress and no covers. The South emerged from an agrarian society, and we have long treasured our huntin’ dogs and working breeds. In Atlanta during the 1960s, we fell in love with dogs that were truly indoor quality. Poodles and Boston terriers and collies proliferated. Lassie, anyone? Then came the advent of high-rises like The Plaza Towers, which were quickly crammed with even smaller breeds. By the time the ’80s and early ’90s rolled around, Atlantans were moving up into the lavish splendor of Park Place and the residences above the Four Seasons. We responded to the high life appropriately enough with highfalutin dogs, including Pekinese, Bichon Frise and “exotic” breeds like the Brussels Griffon and, my all-time favorite, the French bulldog. We were living in international style with truly international pets. As the new millennium rolled around, we went hog wild for Cavalier King Charles spaniels. It seems that every fashionista, decorator, florist
and chef had a Cavalier King Charles, or two. And why not? They’re adorable. But lately, another dog phenomenon is taking place. Folks are competing for the most exotic breeds and, trust me, money is no object. Hybrids such as Labradoodles and Chorkies rule the day. A friend recently told me that she had an Auss-Tzu. Thinking she had succumbed to an awful virus or something, it was awhile before I realized she had just come home with a Miniature Australian shepherd and Shih Tzu mix. Of course, nothing beats our love of an obscure dog. Head to Piedmont Park these days and you’ll see the likes of Boykin spaniels, Italian Cane corsos and maybe even a Norwegian hygenhund—we have ’em and we love ’em. But at the end of the day, nothing beats the love of a Georgia bulldog. You’ll never fi nd a better friend, especially if you adopt a rescue. Their snoring and saliva notwithstanding, it’s no wonder this tried-and-true mascot fi lls homes from Midtown and Mableton to Grant Park and Gwinnett. Woof! NEXT MONTH: GARDENS
