THE LONGING FOR ESCAPE, AND THE NEED for rejuvenation feels exceptionally strong this time of year, when dreary winter days are (finally) a distant memory, and the colors and sounds of spring begin to awaken the senses once again. And, while Atlanta in April is in constant bloom—from flowering dogwoods to back-to-back cultural events—it’s also a time-honored tradition to get away from it all, whether taking the time to indulge in soul-searching solitude, or seeking refuge outside the city with family and friends. In this issue, we profile four such stylish retreats, ranging from Rosemary Beach, Florida, to Lake Martin in Alabama. If there’s one design tenet that each of these getaways share, it’s that a thoughtfully composed home carries the power to invoke a much-needed change of pace, fostering the process of reconnecting and restoring. As architect Bobby McAlpine so eloquently puts it: “they feel like they’re finally coming home.” It’s a sentiment with which we can all identify.

A LOCAL HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO EXPAND THEIR BENCH-MADE UPHOLSTERY BUSINESS TO INCLUDE MORE THAN DOUBLE THE FLOOR SPACE, DESIGNER SERVICES AND PRODUCT OFFERINGS WRITTEN BY Kate Abney

PHOTOGRAPHED BY Sarah Dorio

A mix of vintage furniture (in its original state), along with restored and reupholstered specimens, plus new custom-built pieces. The white-framed Rococo sofa has received a total makeover after being rescued from a dumpster by Atlanta designer Smith Hanes, a friend of the Wikmans.

A DECADE AGO when interior designer Amy Wikman and her engineer husband, Tomas, decided to fuse their passions for aesthetics and precision and form Bjork Studio, they never dreamed it would become the go-to workroom in Atlanta and beyond. But today, commissions for banquettes in fine restaurants (think St. Cecilia) and custom upholstery pieces for designer showhouses and private homes keeps their Swedish-centric vintage furniture and bench-made upholstery business bustling. Bjork Studio is renowned for superb 12

craftsmanship, exacting processes and authentic materials, and its artisans employ eight-way hand-tied springs, high-quality padding (real horsehair, organic cotton or foam) and burlap or jute twine. It’s an old-world approach that has become far from the norm thanks to cheaper options overseas, or even from other high-end stateside manufacturers. These bar-raising practices are in full motion at the Wikmans’ Westside workshop, warehouse and studio, which they expanded by 18,000 square feet in late 2013. By summer, Bjork Studio’s new turf will

showcase a well-stocked resource library, vast stores of Scandinavian vintage wares, a conference area and showroom vignettes for displaying custom prototypes and a growing variety of signature collections. Soon, the duo hopes to host industry events for colleagues and collaborators, trunk shows for fabric companies, unveilings of partner rug collections and apprenticeships for upholsterers-intraining. “We truly love the collaborative atmosphere and talent Atlanta has to offer,” Amy says. “We want to build an institution around that, not just a business.”

Opposite personalities attract—and often produce the best results, as with collaborators Amy and Tomas Wikman. left Bolts of customer’s own material (COM). fabrics.

This nailhead-trimmed beauty, a Bjork Studio original, is called the “Carole” dining chair, and was custom designed for client Carole Davenport. right A raw frame built of kiln-dried hardwood awaits.

Amy rough sketches a majority of the firm’s designs; pictured here are drawings and floor plans depicting various ways to orient an L-shaped sofa; a sketch of a custom chair; a profile of a sofa; and working renderings for banquettes at JCT. Kitchen.

A CELEBRATED SPRINGTIME TRADITION FOR GARDEN ENTHUSIASTS RETURNS THIS MONTH TO BUCKHEAD WITH A RENEWED SENSE OF PURPOSE WRITTEN BY Sejal Bhima

A COLORFUL FIXTURE on Atlanta’s annual social calendar since 1988, the Southeastern Flower Show, hosted by the Southeastern Horticultural Society (SHS), is returning to its roots this year with a more intimate incarnation—the 2014 Garden Show. “This year’s abbreviated show will set

the stage for the 2015 Southeastern Flower Show, as we take steps to reconnect and engage with the local community,” explains Kate Chura, executive director of SHS. The centerpiece of this year’s show lies in the foundation’s partnership with Buckhead CID and Livable Buckhead in the

transformation of Charlie Loudermilk Park, a triangle of land located at the intersection of Peachtree Road, Roswell Road and Sardis Way. As part of the park’s redesign—slated for completion in July—SHS will design multiple gardens throughout the course of the park’s development. “A key initiative 15

was creating a gathering place in the heart of Buckhead, a legacy so to speak,” says Chura. “And hosting the Garden Show at the Buckhead Theatre, directly across from the park, provides an ideal setting to promote this mission and contribute to the neighborhood.” The change in venue from traditional grand exhibition halls such as Cobb Galleria to the more quaint Buckhead Theatre is also part of SHS’s effort to reengage with the community. Next year, the Southeastern Flower Show will return to Ponce City Market, a historic reuse development that played host to the event several times in the mid-90s. Although a juried flower show won’t be a part of this year’s schedule (look for it in 2015), the Garden Show is still lining up to be the season’s premier experience for horticultural enthusiasts. Highlights include a garden and floral marketplace, artistic flower displays, garden equipment demos, a competitive photography exhibition and guest lectures from noted plant speakers and accomplished chefs. 16

In additon to lush displays, the 2014 Garden Show will feature a marketplace with botanical-themed wares and a host of children’s activites, including goat petting, laying hens and much more.

Sitting Pretty French designer Eléonore Nalet’s Serpentine chair, now available at Ligne Roset, offers a stylish alternative to traditional outdoor upholstery. Beginning with foam-filled cushions, Nalet transforms them into water-repellent quilted rolls that are then weaved through a delicate steel-tube structure. AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham IF I COULD DO IT OVER, I would want to be born with two talents that sadly were not bestowed upon me the first time around: the ability to play the piano; and, a green thumb. I can’t seem to grow plants or flowers to save my life. Inevitably, they all die. Watering is a real challenge for me. I either drown the poor plant in water, or I forget to give it a good soaking altogether. And it seems that many plants don’t just require a drink of water. They need to be fed, too. But what kind of plant food should I serve them? And can someone please explain deadheading? I assume that it doesn’t involve tie-dye or a VW van. At this stage in my life, I have given up on trying to grow anything. Well, except for Chia heads. Those things are foolproof. The one plant that I can maintain for a few months is an orchid. I have finally learned the secret to their success: a few ice cubes placed at the base of their stems each week will yield just the right amount of water to keep them looking healthy. I think that orchids might need to be fed, too, but I don’t know how to do that. I simply keep them on a water diet. Because of my track record, I now rely upon flower shows to give me my botanical fix. One of my favorite shows is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London. Those Brits really have a way with flowers. Southerners also seem to be exceptionally gifted horticulturalists, with most of them having been born with that desirable green thumb— except for me, of course. So it comes as a relief that this month, I won’t have to venture far to get my gardening fill. I’ll simply head up Peachtree Road to the Southeastern Horticultural Society’s Garden Show in Buckhead. It might be a scaled-down version of its predecessor, the Southeastern Flower Show, but it will be sure to please even those with the blackest of thumbs, like me!

AT CINCO Y DIEZ, Hugh Acheson and Melissa Clegg’s latest dining destination in Athens, Georgia, chef Whitney Otawka is taking classic Southern ingredients for a spicy, flavorful spin as she transforms locally farmed produce with flavor combinations unique to Central and South America. It’s a familiar concept for the young chef, who grew up embracing Latin culture in Southern California and who recently sojourned in Oaxaca, Mexico, to study its cuisine. “Reading about a specific cuisine and its ingredients is

one thing, but seeing how it’s authentically prepared and cooked is invaluable,” she says of her time abroad. And while tacos and huevos rancheros find their way onto the menu, it’s more novel dishes—such as fried chicken with mole poblano and scallops ceviche with blood orange, white grapefruit and serrano—that will leave patrons’ taste buds tingling. And for good reason: Otawka’s penchant for fresh chiles is evident throughout the menu; she’s even made a pepper spiel cheat-sheet for the restaurant’s front-ofhouse staff. A thoughtful Mezcal and tequila program, along with a rustic, fuss-free ambiance, further complements Cinco y Diez’s mission of exploring the region’s rich food heritage in the purest of forms. cincoydiezathens.com

W WALKING INTO THIS RECENTLY COMPLETED Rosemary Beach house designed by Melanie Turner is a bit like stepping into an intoxicating dream cushioned with bright sunshine. The all-white scheme dazzles, blurring distinctions between walls, floors, surfaces and textiles. As your eyes adjust to take in the details, you notice touches such as the luster of the Venetian plaster walls, the veining of stone and marble and the textures of coral and agate. The three-story house, designed by Lew Oliver and built by Turner’s husband, Stan Benecki, is one of many houses the duo has designed, built and furnished together. Benecki calls on top-notch architects for the plans and employs craftspeople he flies in for each project—masons, plasterers and roofers whose collective expertise shows in

Turner_RosemaryBeach.indd 43

the precise fitting of each molding and eave. “We build each house as if it was for us,” says Turner. “And we include everything we love, because we build houses we’d want to live in.” When the new owners arrive for the first time, they find the house complete right down to artwork and accessories. The baths are stocked with towels and toothbrushes, the beds crisply made. It’s a turnkey operation that has resulted in a series of luxury properties bearing witness to the couple’s exacting standards and impeccable taste. This most recent example, bought by Atlantans Bert Sanders and Laura Koch, comfortably accommodates 16 for hosting their blended family, but is intimate enough for just the two of them. For an all-white scheme, it’s also incredibly easy to maintain. “I covered much of the furniture in white 43

pleather,” says Turner of the dining area and living room, which extend across the back of the house. In the adjacent kitchen area, all of the inner workings are concealed behind flush cabinetry with inset hardware. The effect is calming, with even the island clad entirely in marble, its waterfall edge extending to the floor. Speakers are built into the plaster walls so that music seems to emanate from an invisible source. Benecki points out that, as people spend more time in their second homes, they’re more in need of the requisite amenities of a primary residence. “So we put in large closets and laundry rooms,” he says, “as well as an area for kids to hang out away from the adults.” The top floor serves just such a need, with six bunks lining the walls and an open ex-

panse of floor for playing with toys and games. Turner opted to swath the walls in a bird-print Schumacher wallpaper, which introduces a youthful dose of color and softens the angles of the room’s dormers. The indoor living area connects seamlessly with the pool deck, thanks to wide French doors and broad steps leading outdoors. On a recent afternoon, Sanders and Koch carried on a conversation, she standing at the kitchen island and he responding from a chaise by the water. The couple joked that the high-tech control system was cool indeed, but that they had no idea how to use it. No doubt they’ll figure it out. And if they don’t, Benecki is right down the street, starting on his next dream house. See Resources, Back of Book. 45

LEAVE IT TO AN ARTIST to find potential in the most humble of places, and then to transform it into a thing of beauty and—in this case—fun, too. When searching for a summer home on Georgia’s Lake Burton, Atlanta fine art painter Dawne Raulet Hall kept coming back to a ramshackle cabin that was considered untouchable. The house, which dates to the 1930s, was little more than a fishing cottage comprised of Styrofoam ceilings and worn dark-paneled walls, plus a less-than-functional layout. All that was needed was Raulet Hall’s artistic spirit—not to mention gallon upon gallon of white paint—to transform her ugly duckling into a swan. “It became my peaceful sanctuary,” says Raulet Hall of the made-over cabin. “It’s the perfect place for me to get away and reflect, yet my kids love it, too, because I made it like a camp for them and their friends.” Raulet Hall, a former stockbroker, eased into her passion project by painting everything white and installing wall-to-wall white carpet to brighten up the cozy five-bedroom house, which is located about 100 miles north of the Atlanta. Because years of piecemeal additions—a master bedroom here, a bonus room there—had left the home haphazardly put together, she enlisted custom home builder Mike Hammersmith to step in and resolve the layout. The house now sleeps as many as 16 people, including Raulet Hall’s husband and their combined four children. Total kitchen, bath and dock renovations proved a must, as did the addition of bead board wall paneling to reinforce a cottage theme. Raulet Hall kept some original detailing, such as nautical woodwork and rope railings in the living room, to preserve the cabin’s existing charms, and built upon that layered feel by adding industrial elements, such as the family room’s salvaged bucketturned-lamp and a mirror made from a barrel. “I like an eclectic mix of new and old,” says Raulet Hall, who considers herself an avid flea market forager (she also chips in as buyer for her parents’

52

The cabin’s family room now also serves as the home’s main entrance. Raulet Hall kept original detailing, such as nautical woodwork and rope railings on the original stairwell, to preserve the home’s exisiting charm. Here, high-end and rough-and-ready furnishings share space comfortably. Raulet Hall, pictured with Chihuahuas Biscuit (left) and Lucy, found the salvaged bucket-turnedlamp from Clayton Antiques. French side chairs, Minton Slidel. Accent pillows, Erika Reade Ltd.

antiques shop in Cashiers). “I have the attitude that, if I like something, I will make it work somewhere.” Demonstrating her deft hand at combining sophistication with youthful modernity, Raulet Hall bathed the entire house in whites and creams. “I didn’t want it to be practical, I just wanted to love it,” says the artist of the light and bright living room which carries a hint of French sophistication and flair. “Because nothing is off limits to the kids, I’ll probably have to replace everything before I would normally have to,” she adds. In keeping with the lake cabin’s woodsy vernacular, Raulet Hall wove in handcrafted works throughout the space: a collection of decorative antlers in the living room, twig railings on the front porch and a show-stopping wooden canopy bed in the master bedroom. “I love natural textures, so you’ll see a lot of shells, driftwood and wood in my home. Those organic elements feel easy and relaxing,” she says. Proving that all beautiful things can coexist if you just know how to style them, Raulet Hall tapped her friend, interior designer Shawn Broaddus, to help with the finishing touches, including languid window treatments to frame the lakefront view. But perhaps the most high-traffic space title belongs to the home’s bunk room, formerly the cabin’s main living space. Now a spacious shrine to fun, it’s also a child’s dream come true, thanks to ship-style bunk beds, foosball table and a climbing wall that leads to a sleeping loft. Vibrant pops of orange, pulled from one of Raulet Hall’s abstract mountain paintings, permeate and energize the playful space. The adventure continues outdoors, where in addition to the lake, the kids can choose to zip line, jump on the trampoline or indulge in evening s’mores by the fire, making the house’s name—Good Times—a perfect fit. “It’s not a big house, so it lends itself to everyone being close together,” says Raulet Hall. A © ART OF THE HOUSE: REFLECTIONS ON DESIGN BY BOBBY MCALPINE AND SUSAN FERRIER, RIZZOLI NEW YORK, 2014

ARCHITECT BOBBY MCALPINE allows no ambiguity when defining the difference between a house and a home. The latter is a concept, sentimental and individual; the former is simply a vehicle for taking you there. The title of his newest book, Art of the House: Reflections on Design, was selected on that very principle. Brimming with conversations between the architect (renowned principal of McAlpine Tankersley Architecture) and noted interior designer Susan Ferrier, with whom he’s collaborated on numerous projects through the years via interior design firm McAlpine Booth & Ferrier, the new Rizzoli tome hits bookshelves in late April, and recounts this pair’s famously emotive and considerate process as they fashioned five modest cabins on Lake Martin in Alabama. A favorite vacation destination of weekenders from Montgomery, Birmingham, Atlanta, Columbus and beyond, Lake Martin remains an increasingly popular refuge for those seeking its still, restorative waters and serene shores. As a young architect 20 years ago, McAlpine felt that sense of sanctuary in his bones. Swiftly but passionately, he erected an unassuming cabin in a spot now known as The Ridge on Lake Martin. That rustic residence, which has since been sold, became an unshakeable seed of inspiration for seven strikingly similar structures he built in the same vicinity—albeit much later—five of which received the deft touch of Susan Ferrier for their soulful interiors. Affectionately, and appropriately, they’ve dubbed this emerging community “The Camp.” “These buildings reference the great national parks and recreational structures … the gate houses, ranger houses and barracks that were first built

in the teens, then evolved so beautifully throughout the Great Depression,” the architect explains. Likening their façades to scout and brownie uniforms, he notes how they forfeit exterior expression in favor of something greater: honoring the landscape around them. “These houses are not meant to be trophies,” he assures. “The eye should not shift from the natural beauty. You’re there to witness something larger than yourself.” It took a special homeowner indeed to identify with that sentiment, to understand what was being gained by giving up the spotlight. As it happened, serendipity struck: A range of empty nesters (all first-time clients) sought McAlpine directly. They recognized the privilege of departing their city homes for the refuge and clarity of the lake, where the pace of life slowed and all eyes were off of them. Here, they could embrace their most authentic selves—then take that back into the world. “In the country, they get to be who they are, rather than who they have to be.” Ferrier explains. “I know what their city lives are like; I think with these lake houses, they feel like they’re finally coming home.” Though The Camp is first and foremost a place to reconnect and restore, the cabins also act as bait of sorts for the clients’ grown children—young professionals who often must carefully choose where to spend a precious few vacation days per year. So it’s no coincidence that each of these “sleepy houses” (as McAlpine calls them) make room for about a dozen, with bunks ready to receive grandchildren just as soon as they arrive. Creating such a rich and welcoming atmosphere is a testament to Ferrier’s finesse as a designer. “It’s a very introverted concept,” she notes of the

Art of the House: Reflections on Design (Rizzoli, $55), tells the stories behind architect Bobby McAlpine and interior designer Susan Ferrier’s work on five initial Lake Martin cabins, created for five special sets of clients. Ten inches square, with gilt print and gilded edges, the tome is meant to sit on the very top of the stack. “We wanted it to be a very beautiful, prized object,” McAlpine says. Packed with intimate conversations between him and longtime partner, friend and co-author Ferrier—of McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors (Atlanta, Nashville and New York) —the 208-page book presents 250 full-color photographs by Susan Sully and Adrian Ferrier. Images are beautifully paired to poetic musings by both McAlpine and Ferrier; it’s a revealing look inside this firm’s soulful manner of creating elevated, inviting and highly personal dwellings. And though success is evident in each residence, if you ask McAlpine his favorite, his answer is the two unfinished ones.

contrast between the homogenous exteriors and highly personalized interiors. “These houses are basically treasure chests,” McAlpine elaborates. “It’s the contents that differ.” Ferrier’s approach to cosmetic trappings is infamous for playing to the strengths of sound architecture while capturing the essence of those who dwell within. “The fabrics and finishes, the specific tones and colors, even the wood on the insides of the houses are addressed differently,” explains the designer, who is known for her light but skillful hand. “I like to say that I create the church, but Susan knows exactly how to misbehave in church,” McAlpine adds with a laugh. “She pushes the design just enough so that it is not too sovereign.” By now, the lives of those who have nested here—strangers at the outset—have become intimately intertwined. They wave to their neighbors across the lake, they join each other for holidays and they’ve turned McAlpine’s camp into a community in the most organic way. As each of them set foot in the other’s houses, their individualities are immediately apparent, made all the more obvious when layered atop nearly lookalike floor plans. “I think it jump-starts relationships, seeing those differences, because it’s almost a shorthand of the person in front of you,” Ferrier explains. “The clients are the muses, and these houses capture them.” 65

On a hot August day, Atlanta landscape designer John Howard relaxes on a hammock strung across a shaded, Southern-style wraparound porch at Keith Summerour’s Towerhouse Farm. A friend, collaborator and distinguished guest at this fête, Howard also helped design the cypress allee that now borders Summerour’s sunflower fields, which can be spied in the distance beyond a dry stone hedge.

“GETTING AWAY REPRESENTS GREAT FREEDOM. WHEN YOU’RE IN THE CITY, YOU’RE CONFINED TO YOUR WORK AND YOUR PARTICULAR PARCEL OF LAND. WHEN YOU’RE AT THE FARM, YOU HAVE NO NEIGHBORS FOR MILES AROUND, AND WHEN PEOPLE ARRIVE HERE, THEY’RE AFFECTED BY THAT.” —Keith Summerour

left Interior designer Beth Webb fashioned a rustic farm tabletop as a tribute to Tuscany. Handfuls of fresh figs, rustic wooden bowls, antique pewter-andglass cups, simple white stoneware plates and primitive ceramic jugs all contribute to the pastoral feel. right A view from the loggia at the top of Towerhouse provides an exceptional vantage point to admire the expanse of sunflowers and surrounding land.

W

WITH WORK IN BOTH THE RESIDENTIAL and commercial arenas reaching prolific levels of output and recognition, architect Keith Summerour, now more than ever, requires asylum to disconnect, draw and clear his mind. Nearly every weekend these days, Summerour—whose present projects at Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm are simply an impressive scratch on a well-honed surface—escapes the frenetic pace of the city for his “primary home,” located 60 miles away in Gay, Georgia. The rural refuge, called Towerhouse Farm, is a bastion of Southern romance, where the distinguished architect found the freedom to build without code restrictions. The soaring structure—an extraordinary tower using stones culled from the land and inspired in part by Civil War shot towers and the architecture of San Gimignano, Italy—keeps watch over the surrounding farmland, a plot brimming with corn, millet, soybeans, seasonal produce and, most recently, a labyrinth of bobbing sunflowers. “One of the most wonderful things about the sunflowers is the wildlife they attract,” Summerour says. “There are days when tens of thousands of blackbirds come in big, swooping waves and descend on the sunflowers and trees.” “Though the sunflower field was at first for my edification and enjoyment,” he continues, “it turned out so beautifully that I wanted to share it with others; what a beautiful expression of a landscape that can spring from a few thousand seeds.” Compelled to celebrate it, Summerour called upon friend and frequent collaborator Beth Webb to style a late-summer fête for a dozen or so colleagues and comrades. Calling the scene “an homage to Tuscany” (Countess Marchesa, heiress to the Fiat fortune, maintains a farm close by), Webb combed the house and guest

house for accoutrements, setting a ravishing tabletop with stoneware plates, rustic pottery, pewter glasses, natural linens and freshly picked figs. Served from the cool of the covered porch, a farm-to-fork spread of Italian nibbles—Star Provisions Bresaola with arugula and fresh mozzarella; fig crostini with caramelized onions and lonzino; chilled cucumber, mint and yogurt soup with chives; olives al forno and rosemary gelato from Honeysuckle Gelato—was enjoyed by local luminaries who filtered in throughout the afternoon, among them jewelry designer Avril Vignose, showroom proprietors Randy Grizzel and Gary Mann and kitchen designer Mary Kathryn Timoney. Guests sipped on signature cocktails, The Early—a tomatoand-orange concoction rigged up by Webb and Ian Walker in St. Barth’s during Hurricane Earl—along with several varietals of rosé, a refreshment hand-picked by Summerour via Westside’s Perrine’s Wine Shop. Another cause for celebration: the addition of an allée of cypress trees, which was added to the grounds by acclaimed landscape architect (and party guest) John Howard, in concert with Jeremy Smearman of Planters Garden. The new feature contributes a certain conviviality to the setting, where a farm table was positioned front and center. There is something entrancing about the environment, and “people are affected by that,” notes Summerour. “They’re much more open and really enjoy that liberation, the space that nature brings.” 69

Sunflowers.indd 69

2/26/14 1:22 PM

Summerour purchased this old-world–inspired gazebo, designed by fellow Atlanta architect D. Stanley Dixon, at auction. It now serves as an elegant punctuation point on the property. Summerour has recently introduced a fireplace on this spot, which features a rustic wood-burning oven on the back—perfect for preparing straightfrom-the-hearth flatbread pizzas at frequent get-togethers.

clockwise, from left Because it was erected in Meriwether County, Towerhouse was allowed to come together without the typical code restrictions that preside over structures within city limits. Describing his second home as “rooted to the land in both color and texture,” the architect utilized Georgia clay-tinted quartz gathered right from the property, assembling a romantic structure that references both Confederate shot towers and the acclaimed architecture of San Gimignano, Italy. At the side entry to Towerhouse, the reclaimed mahogany doors and Romanesque archway take on an old-world

appearance, as does the native stacked stone facade surrounding them. “When you walk through this house,” says Webb, “it actually reminds you of Italy, because of the authentic smell of the stone.” Webb, along with Cocoa, a Vizsla/ Brown Lab mix, takes a stroll around the perfectly positioned swimming pool, which is bordered by rustic sandstone coping.

MARCIA SHERRILL

Life … According to Marcia

OUR SENIOR CONTRIBUTING EDITOR REVEALS WHAT’S ON HER RADAR THIS MONTH

I just returned from …

The best thing I just ate … At Inman Park’s super-cool Folk Art, where I doused myself in their version of comfort food: yummy s’mores, waffles and a heaping helping of fried chicken with whiskey peach compote. top to bottom A blooming magnolia. An equestrian-chic Hermès scarf. Salvatore Ferragamo runway show. Grande Baroque tongs by Wallace, available at Beverly Bremer. Chicken-and-waffles from Folk Art.

I’ve gone gaga for … Salvatore Ferragamo’s blush python jacket.

I just adore … Ornate silver tongs at Beverly Bremer. Because after years of grabbing ice with my fingers, I have noticed I that my guests are fleeing in disgust.

I can’t wait for… This year’s Symphony Showhouse at “Palazzo Rosa,” where Atlanta history and the best contemporary designers collide. If the gods are smiling, the dogwoods will be in full bloom and the magnolias in full fragrance. And, I may not ride anything but a broken-down Tennessee Walker (while clinging to both reins and bridle for dear life), but count me in at this year’s Atlanta Steeplechase. I love the idea of picnicking with someone else’s real Hermès picnic basket and pretending that’s my lifestyle, if only for a few hours. I feel about as at home as Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but without the pesky former clients.

A weekend with my girlfriend, Sarah Bruno, in Tuxedo Park, New York. Yes, this is where the tuxedo was invented for less formal occasions. (Less formal? Was formalwear an ermine cape and a scepter?) Visiting Tuxedo Park is like stepping back in time...a cross between Gatsby and Downton Abbey.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF ASA

WELCOME to an Atlanta springtime tradition

—the 44th annual Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, presented by the Atlanta Symphony Associates, the volunteer arm of our Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. As a visitor to this long-running historic event, you are now a part of its history!

PORTRAITCRAFT

One of the most recognized historic family homes in Atlanta, this Italian Baroque-styled masterpiece was designed by architects Neel Reid and Philip Shutze and built in the 1920s for the Rhodes family. Since this home—affectionately called “The Pink Palace” because of its previous stucco color and pink dogwood trees—has served twice before as our Symphony’s showhouse (1979 and 2003), you’ll enjoy viewing the evolution of styles and the attention to detail that our designers have given to Palazzo Rosa, our 2014 house. In addition to the designers, our ASA team of volunteers, led by the 2014 Chair, Brooke Brantley Merrill, has enthusiastically committed many months to the planning and execution of all phases of this fundraising project. We love and appreciate you for all of your thoughtful consideration to the production of the show while always keeping in mind our mission to promote and benefit the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. We are also very happy to honor Leslie Petter, this year’s Honorary Chair. As a longtime member of ASA, she has been a co-chair of this project, president of this organization and a member of the Board of Directors for our Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. We are extremely happy to publicly recognize all of her efforts on behalf of the orchestra and honor her philanthropic and leadership example. The ASA would also be very happy to have you join us in our fundraising and community outreach efforts to benefit and promote the education and community engagement initiatives of our internationally acclaimed Atlanta Symphony Orchestra! In addition to our fundraising projects, we usher at children’s concerts, assist at the family concerts and instrument petting zoos, help with the auditions for the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, assist at the Talent Development Program recitals, and serve as ambassadors at all evening concerts. We volunteer “for the love of it!” We do it for the love of the music, for the love of making new friends, for the love of watching a child’s face as he or she sees a concert for the first time. Fill in the blank with your own reason. When we volunteer, we smile! We feel good long after the event has ended. Come be a part of our group. Please visit us online at atlantasymphony.org/volunteer or contact Kate Robson at kate. robson@woodruffcenter.org for more information. Thank you for coming and contributing to the success of this annual event—the longest-running of its kind in the nation. And join us at Symphony Hall to hear the music, both classical and pops, performed by musicians who bring the highest quality of artistry to each performance. They are your orchestra—Atlanta’s own! See you there.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR BROOKE BRANTLEY MERRILL

Lastly, having worked on this project for the last seven years, I am continually amazed by the vision our designers bring to the Show House year after year. As a society, it is easy for us to fall into complacency, but the DSH&G designers strive to shatter the glass wall that separates the public from interior arts. They always deliver a level of sophistication that bridges the gap between luxury and the comfort a modern family requires. As the Chair of the 2014 ASA Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, I am honored to serve them in this pursuit of attainable opulence.

Welcome to the 2014 Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens. In 1971, an Atlanta tradition was born and for 44 years, the Decorators’ Show House has continued to thrive as a support for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s education and community engagement programs. As a community, we are so grateful for the tireless efforts of the many Atlanta Symphony Associates’ volunteers who comprise the staff for the duration of the show as well as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and our donors. I would also like to give special thanks to the vendors, contractors and showroom sponsors who have helped the designers transform this home into a magical place of interior fantasy.

HOUSE HISTORY “A house so completely Italian that one almost expects to see—not camellias and gardenias—but a Venetian canal and gondolas outside the windows.” -Andrew Sparks, Atlanta Journal Magazine, April 16, 1950

In an interview in 1979, Shutze, then 89, recalled how Reid and Hentz had started the plans with the Rhodes family. Following Reid’s death, Shutze was given the immense task of finishing the designs for the house. He left the floor plans virtually intact and spent countless hours working out the details with Mrs. Rhodes. Although having previously worked on an Italian-style house, Shutze felt that the Rhodes house was the first “Italian design” that was practically his alone. All this being said, Shutze was perhaps most proud of the fact that, in the end, the “the Rhodes liked it.” In addition to designing homes for their clients, the architects of that time were often contracted to choose furniture and fittings. The Rhodes-Robinson house was no different. Josephine Robinson remembered the furniture quite well, stating, “I kept things the way my aunt had them; every single piece that Philip Shutze chose was there. He had exquisite taste.” Designed for lavish entertaining, the home has been the scene for many a grand affair from charity functions to children’s birthday parties; however, it has never lost its ability to serve well as a family home. After Josephine was orphaned at the age of two, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes. The charming Josephine, a brilliant hostess and philanthropist, later married James D. Robinson Jr. At first the newlyweds lived in a Shutze designed home they built for themselves immediately behind Mrs. Rhodes. When Mrs. Rhodes passed away, Josephine inherited the house, and it was then that she decided to move the family and raise their three children in the very house that she knew as a child. The home stayed in the family until 1972 when it was sold to the Morris family. Later, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Seydel moved into the home then owned by the Williams family. The relationship these owners have had with this house is best described as a love affair, and the current owners are certainly no different. Victor Warren Properties acquired the estate as part of its vast real estate portfolio with the intention of restoring the home to a condition that will allow the “Pink Palace” to remain a gem in Atlanta’s fine home history. They have commenced with an extensive kitchen and bath restoration project in collaboration with Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio’s Matthew Quinn. The result will bring the home back to its traditional grandeur while adding all of the modern luxuries a 21st century family requires.

Designed in the Italian Baroque style by the architectural firm of Hentz,

Reid and Adler—later Hentz, Adler, and Shutze—the home, built for Joseph and Frances Rhodes, was completed in 1926 and is referred to locally as the “Pink Palace,” owing to the original color of the stucco and the pink dogwoods that flanked the entry drive. It has been said that a house of this quality could not have been produced without the combined efforts of three of Georgia’s greatest early 20th century architects, Neel Reid, Hal Hentz and Philip Shutze. While Reid played a crucial role in the development of this house, many of the features are so authentically Italian Baroque as to be unmistakably the work of Shutze, who spent three years studying classical architecture in Rome, Italy, at the American Academy before returning to his native Georgia.

26

“I enjoyed doing that house.” Shutze once said. “It was a new thing for Atlanta...this Italianate style, it was controversial and the house was a surprise to Atlanta.” The same thing could easily be said today but in a different respect; the home is now a “green” house. During a prior renovation, the home was outfitted with a geo-thermal heating and cooling system, with every system, including electrical, plumbing, mechanical and telecommunications being updated with ease of care and maintenance in mind. Even more surprising when one considers the fact that this was all done without having to sacrifice any of the homes' charm and patina. The house is as “cutting edge” now as it was back in 1926. *Special thanks to author and historian Jonathan LaCrosse

TALENT DEVELOPED THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CELEBRATES THE TALENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY By Ken Meltzer

Imagine a program in which gifted, young African American and Latino students have the opportunity to work side by side with musicians from a world-class symphony orchestra. The orchestra musicians share their wealth of experience and love of music with the students. Inspired by this unique experience, the students go on to have careers in classical music. Many might be tempted to call this just a dream. In Atlanta, it’s a dream come true, and it’s known as the Talent Development Program™ (TDP). Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Talent Development Program is the result of the extraordinary vision of Azira G. Hill, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) Board Life Director, and a tireless advocate for great concert music. Hill dreamed that someday the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and their audiences would reflect the city’s diversity. Further, for this dream to become a reality, the Orchestra needed to create engagement between its musicians and the gifted young student musicians in the Atlanta area. The ASO inaugurated the Black Talent Development Program in 1993. Ten African American students from the City of Atlanta and Fulton County public school systems participated. In 1998, the program expanded to include African American students from all counties in the greater Atlanta area, and in 2003 Latino student musicians joined as participants. The initiative was then renamed to its current title, the Talent Development Program. The TDP is an intensive, year-round program. Each year, 25 students from Greater Metropolitan Atlanta public and private schools, as well as students from home school families, receive one-on-one coaching and evaluation from Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians (or from highly-qualified local instructors chosen by the ASO). The student musicians play in local ensembles, including the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. Additionally, the Azira G. Hill Scholarship provides financial assistance for TDP students to attend intensive summer music study programs, including Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Tanglewood Institute, the Heifetz Institute, Brevard Music Center, the Kennedy Center Summer Music Institute, and Meadowmount School of Music, among others. In the past 14 years, nearly 200 scholarships have been awarded to TDP students, which have allowed them to study with some of the world’s 30

best classical musicians and compete with some of the country’s top young musicians. TDP students and their parents also attend ASO classical subscription concerts as guests of the Orchestra. Gloria Jones, the ASO’s Associate Principal Bass and a longtime TDP mentor, notes: “At every turn, musical progress is monitored and the students are challenged to perform at higher levels.” ASO Violist and TDP mentor Jessica Oudin adds, “The opportunities afforded to students in the ASO’s Talent Development Program are simply without parallel. With their hard work and intense dedication, these young musicians will surely assume a special role in the world of classical music. I am thrilled to be a part of their journey!” ASO President and CEO Stanley E. Romanstein, Ph.D., observes that the mentoring provided by ASO musicians extends beyond the nuts and bolts of performing great concert music.“The students and their families learn about the extraordinary sacrifices each must make in order to pursue a world-class career,” he says. “It’s clear the ASO musicians derive as much fulfillment from the mentoring experience as their students do.” By any objective standard, the TDP has been a remarkable success, with more than 60 student musicians having graduated from the program. Graduates have attended such prestigious institutions as the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, the New England Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, among others. Many graduates are pursuing distinguished performing careers. Bassist Eric Thompson (’02) was the first TDP graduate and went on to attend the Curtis Institute of Music. Thompson is currently a member of the double-bass section of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Cellist Khari Joyner (’09) attended The Juilliard School in New York City. Joyner, First Place Junior Division Laureate in the 2009 Sphinx Competition, has appeared as a soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Leer Orchestra in the Netherlands and the New World Symphony. In January 2013, Joyner performed for President Barack Obama in a private concert in the White House Oval Office.

Harpist Angelica Hairston (’11), currently a student at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, has been a soloist with the ASO, Montgomery Symphony Orchestra and Nashville Symphony Orchestra. She also was featured on the NPR show, “From the Top.” Violist Bryant Wright graduated cum laude from Harvard University and earned a Master of Music Degree from the New England Conservatory. In 2009, Bryant White performed with the legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the Harvard Humanities Convocation. As part of the ASO’s year-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of the program during the 2013-14 season, the TDP hosted an Alumni Legacy Concert in early January, which showcased the talents of many of the program’s extraordinary graduates. The coordinator for the Alumni Concert was Jessie Ahuama-Jonas, a violist and TDP alumna (’02). Ahuama-Jonas has enjoyed success as a performer, including the opportunity to play with famed jazz pianist Marcus Roberts and the Marcus Roberts Trio. But Ahuama-Jonas has carried the TDP tradition a step further, educating young students in the Atlanta area in her capacity as orchestra director in the Fulton County School system. Ahuama-Jonas acknowledges the singular role TDP played in launching her music career. “I am so proud of the TDP and what it has accomplished over the past 20 years; without it, I would not be where I am today. This program has inspired me not just to play classical music well, but also to love and appreciate it,” she says. “I have been provided opportunities that would have been impossible or unattainable without TDP. The program has embedded skills, techniques, theories and concepts that I share in the classroom. I would love for my orchestra students to experience the opportunities I had during my middle and high school years.” As the oldest year-round intensive training program established by a major American orchestra to support talented young African American and Latino students of every orchestral instrument, the TDP is a source of tremendous satisfaction and pride for the ASO. Certainly, TDP’s 20th anniversary is an appropriate time to reflect upon and celebrate past accomplishments, but it is also a time to look forward to new challenges and goals. Dr. Romanstein hopes that more and more American orchestras will adopt the TDP model. “And,” he adds, “everyone at the ASO looks forward to the day when we will welcome the first TDP graduate as a musician in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra!” For more information about the Talent Development Program and the 20th anniversary celebration of this groundbreaking program, visit tdp20.org. *Ken Meltzer is the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Insider and Program Annotator

THE INSPIRATION “This space was meant for entertaining.” Design Galleria’s design space is proudly sponsored by Crossville Tile and Stone.

THIS YEAR’S DESIGN The unusually wide and original glass pocket doors leading from the pool terrace into the pool house seemed to dictate that this space was meant for entertaining and needed a gathering space larger than one room. The decision was made to move both the two existing bathrooms on either end to one side and knock down the wall between the original seating area and one of the bathrooms which doubled the size of the entertaining space. An outdated kitchenette was transformed into a glamorous bar with glass shelves suspended from gold chains.
