#dailydoseofdesign Stay in the know with Atlanta’s design scene!
THE LAST FEW MONTHS HAVE been full of activity. We’ve photographed gardens perfectly in bloom (even if we had to reschedule once or twice due to rain); mapped out the inner workings of a soon-to-be reimagined atlantahomesmag.com (stay tuned for the big reveal!); and celebrated both the best in the design industry and its up-and-comers during a busy Spring awards season. In our July issue, it’s nice to see some of the fruits of our labor at work. Like the cutting-edge kitchen, bathroom and outdoor living room AH&L helped erect in the middle of Phipps Plaza—just in time for the 2015 Design Bloggers Conference. (The striking results are featured on page 30). Or our report on the trends we saw coming out of the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas earlier this year (page 40). We also love it when we have the occasion to revisit old friends, like the clients of designer Carole Weaks, whose home was originally featured in the May 2003 issue of this magazine. While Weaks has worked with the family for years, you’ll find the recently completed revamp (with a number of timeless pieces still in place) on page 56. Some places create great stories. Others make history.
Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with reďŹ ned cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. GOING FOR GLAM
Simplicity reigns supreme in this 1920s Regency remodel by architect D. Stanley Dixon and designer Beth Webb. PHOTOGRAPHED BY Emily
Followill
PART OF AN EXQUISITE REMODEL of best-selling author Emily Giffin and husband Buddy Blaha’s iconic 1920s Philip Trammell Shutze–designed home, this bath is a fresh take on timeless style, thanks to architect D. Stanley Dixon and interior designer Beth Webb. “We wanted to bring some of the glamour back into the house,” says Dixon. Previous renovations featuring stained wood and other heavy elements left the bath feeling dark, so the space was gutted to make way for a fresh, Regencyinspired aesthetic that reflects the couple’s youthful style. This was achieved with mirrored, black-lacquered cabinetry that serves as a striking counterpoint to the crisp, white marble. “There’s nothing more dramatic than black and white,” says Webb. “It makes such a powerful statement, and to me, it’s the ultimate in glamour and elegance.” Other reflective surfaces, such as the custom nickel-framed shower door and sparkling plumbing fixtures, add an additional dose of glam. However, the room’s strength lies in its clean lines and edited architecture, a trademark of Regency-style design. While simple inset mirrors grace the vanities, a high-gloss fluted wall provides texture around a sculptural Waterworks tub. The fluting is repeated on the shower seat for a subtle statement. “Stan cared deeply about the details, which is why the bath is so bespoke. It’s very couture,” says Webb. In lieu of tiling the floor, Webb and Dixon opted for bookmatched marble fabricated by Marmi Natural Stone, which required great technical precision. “The slabs meet in the center to create a diamond pattern, from which everything radiates,” says Dixon. “The room was actually designed in a very symmetrical fashion. The tub is centered on the diamond, as are the two vanities and shower door. This bath feels more architectural than decorated, and that was our goal,” he adds. “It was almost an exercise in restraint, making sure there were just a few big strokes that made an impact, as opposed to a lot of little details.”

CLASSICAL CHARM
Barbara Westbrook reimagines traditional design with a youthful verve. PHOTOGRAPHED BY Erica
George Dines
MAKING TRADITIONAL DESIGN ELEMENTS feel young and fresh is no easy task, but designer Barbara Westbrook rose to the challenge with this master bath remodel for clients Jon and Farrah Lester. The first order of business was to bring the bath down to its studs, eliminating a cramped layout that had awkwardly divided the space in two. With a more open floor plan in place, Westbrook filled the room with her signature classical touches. She began with the bath’s most eye-catching feature: an elegant checkerboard floor from Paris Ceramics. “The checkerboard is a tried-and-true motif,” Westbrook says. “This particular one, with its charcoal coloring, isn’t as harsh and heavy as a black-and-white check, though, which keeps the floor feeling warm and fresh.” For a complementary accent, the underside of the claw-foot tub was painted in a similar shade of gray. In the shower, Westbrook mixed clean-lined marble with glossy white tile for a dazzling effect. “An all-white marble bathroom—even though it can be very beautiful—can register as cold,” says the designer. “But when you start to mix finishes and materials, that’s when things start to warm up.” The bath’s greatest sense of warmth comes from the towering French oak cabinetry, which has a hand-waxed finish by Carolyn Shedd that gives a sense of dimension and depth. Thoughtful but subtle details complete this bath’s refined appeal. Westbrook selected black porcelain plumbing fixtures and hardware to provide a hint of contrasting detail. At Farrah’s makeup vanity, she placed a graceful low-back chair with delicate pleating, while a quirky Andre Petterson painting above the tub adds a dose of whimsy. “If you’re trying to make a statement, I think it’s important not to clutter the space,” says Westbrook of her pared-down approach. “If you’re careful about the details, it’ll give you that newer, fresher feel, even if you’re working with more traditional materials.”

ORGANIC BLEND
Builder Roger Horner and designer Jeff Thomas seamlessly marry opposing styles in this new bath for first-time homeowners. PHOTOGRAPHED BY Lauren
Rubenstein
STYLED BY Thea
Beasley
DURING THE CONSTRUCTION of their home, newlyweds Chris Sorlie and Stacy Arens faced a design dilemma: He wanted earthy and organic, while she favored a more polished aesthetic. Their builder, Roger Horner, recommended turning to designer Jeff Thomas to help guide the first-time owners in balancing their dissimilar styles. “The beauty of this bath is that it seamlessly incorporates elements that represent both of them,” says Thomas. “It’s got this rustic cypress wood on the ceiling for him and all that gorgeous clean, crisp Calacatta marble for her, which creates this wonderfully unique contrast of earthiness and formality.” Given the home’s Tudor architecture, Thomas and Horner were conscious about introducing period-specific architectural details, such as the modified ceiling. “The plan originally called for a 9-foot ceiling,” recalls Horner. “But we added the high, skinny peak to create a steep, gable-style look.” A series of rectangular grid windows also hearken to Tudor design but remain fresh thanks to their marble trim, a detail repeated on the mirror and shower door. “I wanted to make sure that we did not overuse the marble, but it really serves as this bath’s punctuation,” says Thomas. “It’s almost specimen-like. It has that running-water kind of appeal to it, which is very Zen, and that’s why we let it be freeflowing throughout the space.” Indeed, the graphic accent extends from the flooring to the shower walls and up behind the tub, where it finishes in a sleek niche. Beyond the aesthetics, well-appointed technological touches were also top of mind for the couple. As a concert producer, Sorlie frequently stays at luxury hotels and was seeking a similar experience. Now, details such as thermostatic shower controls and a rain showerhead provide the niceties of a five-star hotel bath from the comfort of home.

WINNING DESIGNS ▼ The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Georgia chapter unveiled its Design Excellence award winners earlier this spring, and in the category of Contract: Product, kitchen-and-bath design expert MATTHEW QUINN of Design Galleria Kitchen & Bath Studio won the Gold for his Continuum sink (below right) created in partnership with MTI BATHS. The semi-recessed sink (only the top two inches of the sink rim rest on the counter) allows the striations of the counter material to flow “through” the sink. The Silver went to HANSGROHE, which operates a manufacturing facility in Alpharetta; the company’s AXOR LAMPSHOWER by Japanese design studio Nendo blurs the line between living spaces with a product that’s both shower and lamp.
▲ Taking home the award for Grand Prize winner at the 2015 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Kitchen of the Year contest was only the beginning for JOEL KELLY of Joel Kelly Design. The dynamic solution he designed for a town house kitchen, complete with steel-framed interior windows and a track ladder for floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, has gone on to win first place in the Sub-Zero/Wolf Kitchen Design Competition, Southeast Region, as well as both the Gold in the Kitchen category and Best in Show: Residential at the ASID-Georgia Design Excellence awards in May.

Community in Carolina PALMETTO BLUFF, THE 20,000-ACRE LOWCOUNTRY DEVELOPMENT by Crescent Communities, is moving forward with its second village, Moreland, further reflecting the rebounding luxury home market. Atlanta remains a core market for Palmetto Bluff, and Peachtree City’s HISTORICAL CONCEPTS is part of the design team for Moreland, a 600-acre village with 500 home sites (when complete) offering river and preserve views, and amenities such as a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The first phase, 60 acres, will offer 92 home sites in the Bluffton, South Carolina, community. The core of Moreland will feature a social hall (named The Boundary, after Boundary Street in Bluffton), an event venue, an outfitters center and a green space. Expected home designs, such as the dogtrot style, will focus on capturing breezes and blending indoors and out. “You could live outside,” says says Courtney Hampson, Crescent Communities’ director of marketing and partnerships. “I keep seeing daybeds hanging on porches, and that’s how you take your nap.”

AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham SOME PEOPLE LOOK FORWARD TO SUMMER because it means beach trips and pool parties. I, however, anticipate summer because it’s the time of year when some of my favorite drinks and spirits are in season. Take, for example, that quintessentially British cocktail, gin and tonic. When I was in college, there was an unspoken rule that G&Ts should only be consumed during late spring and summer. Drinking one at any other time of the year was considered uncouth. Frankly, I find that to be a bunch of hooey, but once a rule is drilled into one’s head, it becomes difficult to disobey. Speaking of G&Ts, England is responsible for a number of warm-weather cocktails, which might be attributed to the well-known British penchant for hot weather. (As Noël Coward sang, “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.”) A perennial Anglo favorite is the Pimm’s Cup, which is practically required drinking during Wimbledon. It may look as innocuous as a glass of Luzianne iced tea, but drink more than two, and you’ll learn the hard way that this British libation isn’t as innocent as it looks. Italians also know a thing or two about potent summertime potables. For years, Campari was considered de rigueur, whether it was mixed with soda or orange juice. But today, Campari is joined by another equally popular Italian aperitif: Aperol. The Aperol Spritz, which is a concoction of Aperol, prosecco and soda, is now as much a part of summer as Jack Rogers sandals and Tory Burch tunics. Rounding out my list of favorite beat-the-heat libations is rosé. Once consumed only in summer, rosé has become the wine world’s equivalent of white jeans: a year-round favorite—especially in Atlanta, where it’s warm for about eight months of the year. So, with this article now written, I’m off to quench my thirst with a gin and tonic. Or should I make that a Campari and soda? Then again, what about a nice glass of rosé? With all these decisions to make, I need a drink. 51

DESIGNER CAROLE WEAKS BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO HER LONGTIME CLIENTS’ BUCKHEAD HOME WITH A LIGHTER COLOR PALETTE, FRESH FABRICS AND PRETTY UPDATES THROUGHOUT.
The family room furniture was reupholstered in more neutral fabrics, but the room is certainly not staid, with its window treatments in a distinctive Travers fabric. Beautiful French antiques still work in the space but feel revived in the new color scheme.

A number of qualities go into creating well-appointed interiors, but a truly successful relationship between client and designer may be at the top of that list. And like a good marriage, it’s a collaboration that can last throughout the years even as styles change and tastes evolve. “When you have clients that really enjoy the process and appreciate design, it is more like a partnership,” says interior designer Carole Weaks.
An elegant arrangement at one end of the living room is set off by an arresting painting by Chuck Bowdish and an 18th-century sculpture Weaks found in France years ago. A melon shade in the painting is subtly incorporated throughout the room as well as in the powder bath.
“Carole instinctively understands how we live, anticipates our needs and updates things accordingly,” adds homeowner Lisa Hills. For both, the relationship has blossomed into a friendship as well. Weaks began working with Lisa and her husband, Jim, in their Buckhead home more than 14 years ago, when the emphasis was country French with a palette heavy in yellow tones, red accents, and lots of pattern. (In fact, their home was originally featured in the May 2003 issue of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.) The rooms were refined over the years, but eventually it was time for a more substantial refurbishment, but not from scratch. “I always advise clients to purchase pieces that will last, and not some fad that will be over in 15 minutes,” says Weaks. “I instinctively know what will be short-lived, and I steer them away from that towards more classic styles.” The makeover began with an overall lightening of the spaces, with walls painted or wallpapered in neutrals instead of the yellows of before. Even the library’s dark wood paneling was painted, giving the room a whole new attitude. “The room was very traditional and clublike with plaid chairs,” says Lisa. “It was time to go in a totally different direction.” In the living room, two consoles were repainted to accommodate the less yellow, more taupe look, and all the furniture in the family room was reupholstered, a testament to buying high-quality pieces from the start. The marriage of old and new continues in the master bedroom. The toile is gone, replaced by a sea of creams, while the carved upholstered bed and midcentury bedside tables remain. A new work of art over the bed sets the stage. “A painting can be that one piece that makes everything else work together in a room,” says Weaks. “Working together” is a key phrase in this home. “I think it’s an interesting evolution how a client’s taste can evolve over the years, and as designers, we walk that path with them,” says Weaks. “You can appreciate the progression in a project where the client actually works with the designer to keep things fresh and updated.” Adds Lisa: “We have grown up with Carole, and it continues to get better. I like to remind her that we only have a few more years to go before we can start all over again.” See Resources, Back of Book.

In the living room, the yellow tones were taken away and seating rearranged and expanded after moving the grand piano. Weaks added two neutral sofas and a pair of bergères, but most of the accessories stayed the same, including the chandelier, mirror, candelabra and statue in the window. opposite The Brunschwig & Fils wallpaper originally speciďŹ ed for the dining room continues to take center stage, but the mix of chair styles, revamped window treatments and chandelier give the room a layered look.

ZAK AND CARA ISDELL LEE ARE NO STRANGERS TO ENTERTAINING. As recurring hosts and attendees of weekly societal engagements, the charming pair wanted to revamp their Buckhead home to accommodate both guests and family, including 7-year-old son Rory. As an ardent traveler who has lived on five continents, Cara incorporated her globe-trotting perspective—particularly summers spent at her
68
family’s retreat in the South of France— into the home’s aesthetic. Having always admired the lavender-scented countryside of her childhood, she sought out designer Will Huff of Huff-Dewberry to curate a Francophile style to match her memories. Huff worked with the traditional layout of their sprawling 11,000-square-foot abode, designed by architecture firm Spitzmiller & Norris, to create a provincial retreat. The mission: design an elegant yet approachable space to match the family’s various needs. The solution: a soothing color palette of grays and blues, versatile furniture that works in various arrangements and an abundance of French antiques. “The house pulls from my life, especially my fondness for France and French furnishings,” says Cara. “Life’s too short to not have antiques.” Every space mixes equal parts comfort and glamour. Knowing that the formal living room would be used most at parties, Huff nestled an assortment of perching spots throughout the room—perfect for clusters

of cocktail-party conversations. Mixing red wine with a cream chaise longue might bring a hostess to an early grave, but Huff had the bright (and inconspicuous) idea to use a linen-like outdoor fabric that facilitates quick cleanup after party fouls and stands up to youngsters in the house. The approachable refinement continues in the dining room, which is comfortable and inviting, even though it houses formal antiques. Blue chairs upholstered in Sabina Fay Braxton’s old-world textiles resonate with Cara’s taste and easily transition into the living room for spillover seating. Complementing this print is a swoon-worthy, silver-leafed Gracie wallpaper, adorned with custom, hand-painted blue birds. The romantic wallcovering balances the rustic earthenware buffet lamps, creating a room that is royal yet inviting. When starting the redesign, Cara had one specific request: “I wanted a lavender-colored room somewhere in the house,” she says. “I love the lavender fields around our family home in France—I have bushels of it scattered everywhere—and wanted to incorporate that color in a big way.” Huff satisfied her request with a serene master suite with monochromatic variations of the hue in the linens and textiles. Creamy gray walls and an industrial custom bed keep the room soothing without being overtly feminine. The media room, however, boasts the masculine feel of a man cave. The film-noir space facilitates movie watching and state-of-the-art unwinding on its custom chaise-like sofa. Zak, a huge James Bond fan (Sean Connery, of course), put his touch on the room with a commissioned Mark Boomershine art piece of the Ian Fleming persuasion. While the romantic charm of the Lee estate resonates with a landscape across the pond, Cara stayed true to her Southern roots throughout the redesign. “France was always a great escape, but Atlanta is still—and always will be—home.” See Resources, Back of Book. 72

PERFECT PROPORTIONS, STATELY WINDOWS, handsome moldings and an elegant gate leading to a regal front door: The façade of this Peachtree City home, which is sited within mature landscaping, features classic hallmarks of architecture firm Historical Concepts’ properties. Headquartered in Peachtree City, it’s one of the most comprehensive firms dedicated to interpreting a classic, traditional vernacular in multiple architectural styles, and its portfolio spans from exclusive residential developments to large community projects. Homeowners Marcia and Mike Taylor are also longtime Peachtree City residents, where Marcia is the CEO of familyowned Bennett International Group and an executive of the Taylor Family Foundation, which issues grants to local nonprofit organizations. When a beautiful home in one of Historical Concepts’ proprietor Jim Strickland’s earlier developments came on the market, they determined that it needed a few architectural and landscape improvements. “We never entered the moving process expecting to fully renovate a home,” says Marcia, “but working with Jim, builder John Bynum, and our designers made the process a true pleasure.” Strickland, renowned as one of the most prolific architects of historically referenced American architecture, agrees. “Although there were already many strong architectural elements, we simplified some things and added others to achieve a substantive whole,” he says. “Marcia and Mike are most gracious in opening their home to entertain so many people in so many various capacities, and they needed a home that reflected their wonderful hospitality.” Architectural changes included adding beams to some of the ceilings to evoke a feeling of depth, substance and age. Trims and moldings were simplified to create strong but refined lines throughout. The new kitchen and updated master bathroom feel clean and inviting in crisp white cabinetry. The Taylors have a ranch in Wyoming, so they asked Forsyth & Brown of Jackson to design the interiors of their Peachtree City home. “We incorporated Marcia’s extensive art collection and mixed it with antiques so that the aesthetic is more formal but as comfortable and inviting as her ranch,” says Amy Brown. The result is that the classic house appears to have been arduously cared for by genteel owners while nestled in mature landscaping for centuries. See Resources, Back of Book. 79

Porch Swings
BEFORE AIR conditioning, the Southern porch was a seasonal necessity. Those long, wraparound spaces were a requirement for staying out of the rays of the hot sun. And, for those of us old enough to remember, the porch was almost 7,000° cooler than indoors. We slept on those porches—in real beds—and we treasured those porch swings. It’s no accident that in To Kill a Mockingbird so darn much happened on the porch, and more specifically, on the porch swing. (Now this swing is not to be confused with the giant tire swings that some of us redneckier folk had in our backyards. Back then, the very idea of someone dropping money on a jungle gym was unheard of.)
Porch swings cushioned in extra-long twin mattresses offer an idyllic area of repose on the wraparound porch of this this Carter Kay Interiors-designed beach retreat. It’s also the perfect vantage point for soaking up ocean views or the summer sea breezes.
96
On our porch swings, we gathered for iced tea that we brewed in giant containers in the yard; it was where young men came a-courting, where after Sunday dinner you raced to claim a spot on the most coveted seat in the house. Today, of course, designers and their clients view the porch swing not as a rusticated symbol of yesteryear but as another area to make a design statement, to ease that transition between indoors and out. Lacquered white, with cushions festooned in a bright outdoor fabric, hanging by rope, surrounded by planters with palms and bright annuals—yes, indeed, this is a place of honor. (Even if there are 18,000 BTU of air conditioning indoors.) On our porch swings on a hot July day, people slow down. Life slows down.
