WELCOME
IBath’ve ofalways thought that our annual the Year contest was perfectly timed. The winners are presented in this month’s issue, and by the time July rolls around, what could possibly be better than soaking in a cool bath after a long, hot summer day? This year, four esteemed judges chose three winning baths from almost 60 entries: two that are classically inspired, and another with more contemporary influences. Each one is unique in its own right; all of them seamlessly blend high style with practicality. In fact, they’ve inspired me to kick off my shoes, run some bath water and settle in with a good book. And while my own bath isn’t as good looking as these, I can certainly dream!

We also pick up Brebis sheep-milk cheese. The three cheese varieties at Manyfold Farm are the most delicious ever. Our next stop is The Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop for fig preserves.
One with nature We built at Serenbe so our dogs would have time in the woods. There are more than 100 miles of trails within Serenbe—our favorite one is a straight path to the waterfall, where it always feels incredibly radiant and inspirational.

Art of entertaining
Getting to know you
We love to entertain and do most of the cooking ourselves. The kitchen is the center of the house, and eating is usually on the porch or dock. When we do venture out, SpringHouse Restaurant offers fine dining on par with any place in the country. It’s fabulous haute Southern cuisine. I order anything with grits. We like the highly coveted counter seating where you can watch the cooking.
The finest hours at the lake are during late nights and early mornings—it’s the best way to really “get to know” any guest who, like me, is late to bed and early to rise.
Jump in Lake life revolves around the water, of course, and we are well supplied with a boat, jet ski and all manner of floats and noodles. Everyone has their own music with them these days and the lake is a great place to share that.

DESTINATION: Sea Island, Georgia Just for kids On Friday nights, there is a fun family cookout with lots of fresh seafood at the resort’s Rainbow Island. My children’s favorite restaurant is a holein-the-wall on nearby Saint Simons Island called Bubba Garcia’s. Sea Island’s deep sea fishing is also kid-friendly; my nine-year-old caught a shark on our last trip! And, of course, there is Camp Cloister, which has movies every afternoon, nature adventures, horseback riding and ocean activities. Three swimming pools (one is for adults only) provide endless fun for kids, and are located next to the Southern Tide restaurant (also known as ‘Big George’s’ to us old timers). I’ve indulged in many raw oysters and Sea Island Teas here.
The Cloister You can’t beat the service and the old-fashioned social graces at The Cloister. I love the pecky cypress paneling at The River Bar. Donald is the island’s best bartender and he always recommends the ZD Cabernet. The tennis club is another favorite; club pros Murphy and Luke Jensen won the French Open in 1993. The formal luncheon at The Cloister is fantastic and very Southern; we have enjoyed Thanksgiving there for years.

Our studio in the mountains is stocked with sketch pads, paint, tripods (and a fireplace), and is perfect for working on future projects and other creative endeavors.

When I’m at the beach, I ride my bike everywhere.
My friends and I sit under our umbrellas in a line along the shore. I always bring my yellow paddle board for exercise. When we see dolphins, we jump in our kayaks for a better view.
Local taste Au naturale Wild bunnies live on the causeway that gets you to Sea Island; we always play a counting game as we arrive. My friend Vassa Cate has been on the Sea Island Company staff since middle school and designed all of the gorgeous plantings on the grounds.
Memories Just after my wife and I returned from China with our newly adopted daughter, we had Easter brunch at The Lodge. I can still see my daughter sitting there in her Lilly Pulitzer dress.
For breakfast, I ride to Cowgirl Kitchen Restaurant and Bar for Mama’s Nogi—corn tortillas topped with scrambled eggs, bacon, diced tomato, avocado and cheddar. It’s heaven! I make a second stop at Charlie’s Donut Truck in Alys Beach for the kids’ breakfast. Before hitting the beach, I bike to Summer Kitchen Café and pick up either a tuna salad or a spicy chicken roll-up for an oceanside lunch. The kids like to get lunch on the beach from The Dog Man Du—a food cart pushed by a very fi t young man. The moms, who are always willing to help out, place the order.
Cocktails and dog tails Around four, we bring drinks and the dogs down to the beach and toast the sunset. Then someone (we take turns) goes to the store to get whatever we need for dinner, and we cook and eat at home.
Night fall One of my favorite things is to go to movie night, which is held on one of the town’s greens. When we watch on the big screen outdoors, I feel just like a kid again.

The Ocean Course Club is also public and we love to sit on the veranda and enjoy the spectacular view. The golf course is along the ocean and really gives you a run for your money!
Getting around Kiawah is known for its bike paths. You can see the entire island, from end-to-end, by bike.

Yum
We arrive Friday afternoon around nine, pick up friend Nancy, and head for Happs Place, seven miles north of Cashiers—and really, really in the country.
We head down Sheep Cliff Mountain to Buck’s Coffee Cafe. Steve runs Buck’s and plays jazz on Saturday mornings, classical on Sunday mornings. Take advantage of the chance to buy both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal in the same place (sold out by 8 a.m.).
Cashiers Farmer’s Market (across the street from Buck’s), is stocked with fresh veggies and fabulous pies and cakes, homemade relishes and more.
Menu of choice Our waiter Randy, who is quite the character, knows that we want fried green tomatoes to begin with, followed by chicken fried steak with veggies and hot cheese biscuits. Dessert is either hot bread pudding with a bourbon sauce ( just leave the bottle) or fourberry cobbler with ice cream. All calorie-free, of course.
Being neighborly We sit by a window at Buck’s and catch up on Cashiers happenings by visiting with friends every weekend. Then it’s back to the house for yard work or reading.
Steppin’ out Saturday nights are for donning coats and ties and enjoying a delicious dinner at the Chattooga Club. Chef Jason knows what he’s doing.
Sunday! It’s up for 8 a.m. church and breakfast with friends at Zookeeper Bistro or the Randevu.

Traditional and modern touches effortlessly converge in this master bath remodel WHEN A FIRE NEARLY DESTROYED their 1920s Neel Reid-designed home, the homeowners took advantage of a topto-bottom remodel and transformed their master bathroom from a cramped Jack and Jill to a spa-like retreat. The couple tapped Atlanta architects Todd Pritchett and Craig Dixon for the revamp. “We were intentional about respecting the landmark status of the home, so we chose historic details, from wood-paneled walls to intricate marble inlay flooring and wall tile,” says Pritchett, who seamlessly merged traditional and modern details. First, Pritchett and Dixon maximized space by bringing a back bedroom and an awkward closet into the new floor plan to accommodate his and her dressing rooms, a private rooftop terrace and a luxurious soaking tub. “The new window wall above the bathtub serves as the room’s focal point, while also taking advantage of the
Druid Hills views,” he says. Complementing the expansive bay window are sophisticated flourishes, from the turn-of-the-centuryinspired shower design to a warm color palette of grays for the custom cabinetry and paneling. “There are a lot of details, but they don’t overwhelm you and look busy,” says Pritchett of the grand but simple design. Take the patterned Calcutta gold floors, which are also heated: “The marble was special-ordered from Italy and laser-cut into a beautiful pattern. It’s so subtle that you don’t even notice it initially,” he says. With sparkling mirrored doors, Pritchett and Dixon fashioned the elegant master bathroom to envelope the room in natural light. “The mirrors make the space glamorous, without being bedazzled. Plus, the mirrors reflect the natural views, making it feel like you’re inside the wooded backyard.” The effect is simply serene.

ARTFUL RETREAT
PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAIGWOOD STUDIOS
Artistic elements elevate this bath to sanctuary status
TAKING CUES FROM A PAIR OF ART-LOVING homeowners, designer Julia Stainback applied an artful layering of architecture, fi xtures and fi nishes to a master bathroom remodel in Sandy Springs. To echo the artwork throughout the home, Stainback introduced a soft but striking color palette of black, white and soft gray—a major departure from the room’s original tan and orange. “The couple gravitates toward texture and black and white, so we chose a wall-to-wall hexagon mosaic made of Calcutta gold for the floors,” says the Atlanta designer. She selected honed marble, as opposed to polished, throughout the redesign: “It softens the space and blurs the hard edges, creating an almost watercolor effect,” Stainback says. To offset the matte fi nish, chandeliers and antique mirrors on the vanity add shimmer to the monochromatic palette. Stainback imagined the sophisticated space like spokes on a wheel, offering a focal point in every direction. “There’s a muse-
um-like quality to being in this bathroom, because you’re constantly looking at art.” The eye is also drawn to exquisite details like his and her mirrored vanities, replete with hidden televisions and elevated sink ledges to showcase the marble veining, or the sunlit soaking tub, enhanced by dressmaker drapery and a blackand-white original print by fi ne art photographer Harry Callahan. The remodel successfully addressed the homeowner’s top requests: To customize and maximize efficiency of space, without expanding the floor plan. One of the solutions was to widen the exterior wall of the shower that boasts his and her zones. “We added 12 inches to accommodate a window with a deep ledge. It softened the space and made room for a plant or sculptural object,” Stainback says. Here, the designer also used marble to mimic the wood paneling and crown molding found throughout the house. “I’m a believer that symmetry can add balance and relaxation to a space,” says Stainback. Mission beautifully accomplished.

LIGHT TOUCH
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERICA GEORGE DINES
Cool colors and natural light envelop this stylish master bath renovation WHEN A PAIR OF EMPTY NESTERS set out to update their 1970s home, interior designer Mark Williams delivered a master bathroom remodel that enhanced space and functionality. “The homeowners wanted a spa-like oasis with room to accommodate his and her vanities,” says the designer, who added a closet into the floor plan and converted a spare bedroom into a master dressing area. With the bathroom’s footprint maximized, Williams set out to magnify the natural light suddenly streaming in. “There was a window in the former closet, but instead of treating it as a window, we covered the entire wall with a light sheer to offer a light, fresh feeling to the room,” he says. The designer and his team repeated the ribbon-like silhouette of the drapery to the eye-catching light
fi xture overhead and above the vanities. To further a sense of serenity, the designer merged contemporary and traditional details, so that the room would come across as neither cold nor sterile. “We applied a palette of warm whites and grays—with a hint of taupe and beige—that are all very soothing,” Williams says. Striking a modern note was one of the project’s splurges: the recessed ceiling. “We covered the ceiling in warm grey mosaic tile. The sparkle it adds to the space gives the room a unique touch.” Underfoot, Williams selected classic terrazzo tile flooring in a sandy grey. “I don’t like a stylistic one-note room, because the spaces tend to age less gracefully,” says Williams. “The mix we achieved here creates a more modern space that will stand the test of time.”

About the Judges Rodolfo Castro
Mark Keiser, CKD, CKD
Rodolfo Castro opened Castro Design Studio, LLC, in 2006. The boutique fi rm specializes in planning and designing custom, high-end residences and vacation homes. Their projects include new houses, additions, restorations and renovations. The company draws inspiration from the traditional and classical architecture of a site’s surroundings, as well as from the client’s own ideas. This is interpreted with a vision of the present to create work that is both timeless and modern while respecting the project’s site and context. Abiding by the belief that a house is to be lived in and enjoyed, and not just simply admired, Castro Design Studio creates unique spaces for unique people.
Mark Keiser has been designing Atlanta-area homes for more than 25 years. In 1991, he launched The Keiser Group, providing residential design services for production and custom home builders. Recognizing a trend in the early 2000s, Keiser began to focus on kitchens and baths, and in turn, bring fresh, innovative and functional designs to the home building community. In 2005, Keiser joined a top 10 national home builder—headquartered in Atlanta—and went on to become a leading designer in the company’s kitchen and bath division.

Fine Homebuilding and Exquisite Renovations
AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi von Habersham “Do you pin?â€? That was a question recently asked of me, and my immediate response was, “Of course not. A lady doesn’t pin. She gets pinned.â€? In fact, I was pinned on a few occasions during college, once by a boyfriend who was an SAE and the other by the president of KA! But my seniorcitizen status was quickly revealed as I was informed that today’s pinning has nothing to do with fraternity pins but rather with Pinterest. Oh, dear. Yet another social media site that I must master. I have studied this Pinterest thing over the last month or so, and while I sort of understand its appeal, I have also noticed a few odd things about it. First, why does everybody seem to publish photos of food? If Ferran AdriĂ has prepared your supper, then by all means, take a picture of it. But if Marie Callender was responsible for that Chunky Chicken and Noodles that you so lovingly microwaved, do we really need to see a photo of that? Do we really care? Many people have pinned their vacation photos of beautiful buildings, gardens and natural wonders. But what’s up with those photos that people take while reclining poolside so that their lower legs and feet are smack dab in the middle of the photo? I’m not a fan of people being photographed in their bare feet (I saw enough of that while growing up in my rural hometown), so perhaps I’m biased. Then again, if you’ve own half-way around the world to relax at the Four Seasons Bora Bora, you really should focus on the glorious scenery and not your pedicure! However, I’m not a complete sourpuss when it comes to Pinterest. I’ll be the ďŹ rst to admit that the site satisďŹ es my curiosity about how others live. I applaud those brave pinners who upload photos of their bookshelves, linen closets, drinks trays, perennial gardens and butler’s pantries, because they provide me with hours and hours of guilt-free snooping. But please, don’t show me your dinner ... or your feet!

WHERE TO GO
COOL OFF The city’s best frozen desserts
MILLER UNION’s exquisite meals may have garnered the restaurant multiple James Beard Award nominations on a national level, but its ice cream sandwiches draw similar recognition locally. The restaurant churns out a sugar-sweet array of the decadent desserts for lunch. Housemade flavors like rosemary-chocolate chip, Georgia strawberry and five-spiced oatmeal are sandwiched between delicate chocolate cookies for a nostalgic afternoon treat. (678) 733-8550; millerunion.com
Making rounds at farmers markets throughout the week, artisanal ice cream purveyor WESTSIDE CREAMERY is a wonderland on wheels. Local culinary connoisseurs dish on what they’re packing in their summer picnic baskets
“I love the romantic notion of picnics. When you’re packing for one, you want something that is easy to prepare, easy to eat and scrumptious even after hours of being patiently packed away. One of my favorite picnic recipes is a simple panini call pane bagnato; it’s a delicious layering of fresh vegetables (tuna optional) that are bathed in a vinaigrette and piled high on freshly baked rosemary focaccia bread.” –Alisa Barry, Bella Cucina, Porta Via

“Lately, I’ve been using more plant-based foods, so I’d pack grilled veggies with an artichokeand-parmesan dipping sauce and a fresh Georgia butter bean salad. I also use a lot of fresh-fruit purees in my cocktails, so I’d whip up a passion fruit-and-vodka libation with sparkling water and fresh mint. I’m a cookie freak, too, so delicious ginger molasses cookies from The Cookie Studio are a must!” –Jenny Levison, Souper Jenny, Cafe Jonah
“My Louisiana roots are a constant source of inspiration and the backbone of how I like to cook and eat. I typically fill my picnic baskets with a summer corn Maque Choux salad with poached Georgia shrimp and some locally sourced cheeses with a fresh baguette. A crisp, young white wine like an Albariño makes the perfect pairing.” –Joe Truex, Watershed on Peachtree

THE NEXT STEP
For a pair of empty-nesters looking to update their ’80s abode, interior designer Barbara Westbrook employs a near minimalist approach— without sacrificing comfort Written by Elizabeth R. Ralls Photographed by Erica George Dines

Interior designer Barbara Westbrook and design associate Kim Winkler worked in tandem with architect Kenneth Lynch, project architect Bryan Busch and builder A.J. Thomas to completely overhaul the main oor of this 1980s home. In the two-story living room, a blocky, custom coffee table (a nod to legendary French designer Jean-Michel Frank, whose work inspired this home) anchors a comfortable but clean-lined arrangement that includes Quintus leather arm chairs, swivel chairs from Bungalow Classic and a Tuxedo-style sofa of Westbrook’s design. A photographic painting by John Folsom, represented by Pryor Fine Art, holds pride of place above the mantel.

Westbrook’s propensity for employing exquisite finishes is evident in the dining room, where a custom parchmentfront rosewood buffet brightens the dramatic space, as do pieces like the gold leaf-trimmed chandelier, cream-colored columned draperies and upholstered arm chairs from Bungalow Classic. EAVE IT TO BARBAR A WESTBROOK TO make even the most clean-lined interior appear not only approachable, but also incredibly sumptuous. Tasked with bringing a 1980s Buckhead home fully into the 21st century—in conjunction with Kenneth Lynch & Associates—Westbrook, taking cue from the tailored and stylish homeowner, looked to legendary French designer Jean-Michel Frank for inspiration. The result is a carefully curated combination of eye-popping color, texture and pattern that’s as comfortable as it is contemporary. “I hate it when everything’s one material,” says Westbrook. “A little wood, a little stone, a little lacquer, a little [gold] leaf—I love the mix.” And this home’s dining room offers a glimpse into the understated luxury she’s so carefully cultivated. There’s the tactile: a parchment-front rosewood buffet accented with exquisite butterfly cabinet pulls; the visual: a gold leaf-dipped white iron twiggy chandelier; and the dramatic: cream-colored, floor-to-ceiling draperies against dark walls.

The homeowners wanted an all-white kitchen, and Westbrook delivered a space that’s as light and bright as it is visually interesting. Because the room opens up to the main floor’s most public spaces, she created a focal point in the form of a long slab of bookmatched Calacatta Conti marble, topped by a stainless steel hood. A kitchen table and island, both topped with 2 ¼-inch countertops and identical in size, break up the visual plane. The barstools and pendant lights are from Switch Modern. The custom cabinetry is by Kingdom Woodworks. below In the angular powder room, Westbrook punctuated an overscale Manuel Canovas wallcovering with a marble-topped red-lacquer vanity. The mirror is custom and the sink, faucet and sconces are by Waterworks.
But beyond her abilities to embellish even the simplest forms with luxurious fi nishes, it’s Westbrook’s knack for infusing a neutral palette with show-stopping color and artful pattern that’s proven her success. Take the angular formal powder room, for instance, in which she punctuated a large-scale black-and-white wallcovering with a shiny, marble-topped red-lacquer vanity. “It’s fun to walk into someone’s powder room and want to come out and talk about it, just like in a great restaurant,” the designer explains. Another conversation-worthy space is the light-and-bright kitchen, where in lieu of overhead cabinets, the designer specified a long, bookmatched slab of Calacatta Conti marble—topped by an equally large stainless steel hood—to create a striking focal point. Just as unexpected are the island and kitchen table, both identical in size, breaking up that visual plane. Dripping glass pendant lights 59

The cabinetry is by Kingdom Woodworks. The photograph is by Ron van Dongen, represented by Jackson Fine Art. opposite Westbrook amped up the glam quotient in the master bedroom by juxtaposing a gray color palette with bursts of intense citron in the form of a patterned headboard in Nobilis fabric and an upholstered iron bench from R Hughes. Masculine pieces like the iron four-poster bed and tête-à-tête are complemented by more feminine touches like the artfully patterned throw pillows in Zimmer + Rohde fabric, leggy drinks tables and upholstered iron bench. above “add a little sparkle to the space. And every woman likes a sparkle,” Westbrook smiles. And although the home’s more public spaces, such as the living and sitting rooms, include rich chocolate browns, Westbrook says she’s always mindful of making the master bedroom more feminine in feel. Here, the designer amped up the room’s glam quotient by juxtaposing the gray color palette with an intense citron-colored headboard, while the sinuous curves of the room’s leggy cocktail tables and an upholstered bench “keep the room feeling lighter,” she says. It’s yet another example of the designer’s propensity for softening clean-lined spaces with character and curves. “It’s modern, clean and simple, but it doesn’t ever feel hard-edged,” she says. HIGH ABOVE THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL ATLANTA in Midtown, a contemporary condominium combines New York chic and Hollywood glamour with spectacular Atlanta views. With a master bedroom that could have belonged to a leading lady from the ’30s and a living room with art deco pieces that hint of “Mad Men,” the 45th-floor condo is also a showcase for the owners’ extensive photography collection. Plans for the residence began with a shopping trip to New York, before the couple decided to move to The Residences at the Four Seasons. On that trip, the wife and designer Bill Musso purchased several items, including a French art deco club chair and table that now reside in the living room. When the couple began plans to move into the condominium (built in the early ’90s with downtown and midtown views and luxury hotel amenities), Musso started implementing the long-developed concept for the future home. “She wanted to feel like she was in New York without being in New York,” says Musso, principal and lead designer of Musso Design Group, of the wife’s direction.

The bed is by Baker. Rug, Moattar, Ltd. Lamps, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Curtain fabric, Kravet.
During the seven-month renovation project, Musso worked with Janus Associates to create fewer spaces by opening up hallways and rooms. The 2,250-square-feet condo, which originally contained three bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths, was redesigned as a “house in the sky” with two bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths and a den, plus a music space for the husband, a jazz bassist. The couple’s photography collection infuses a sense of vibrancy into the renovated space. Working with Jackson Fine Art, the collection includes both color and black-and-white works by Andre Moore, Todd Murphy, Vee Speers and Masao Yamamoto. “The furnishings were to be the backdrop for the art collection,” Musso says. “Everything we chose, from fabric to surfaces, was really to enhance the art and photography.” Accessories and designer details also serve as works of art. A paper wig sculpture by Amy Flurry and Nikki Nye of Paper-CutProject sits on a pedestal next to a lacquered, carved cabinet by artist Robert Kuo. Musso and design associate Todd Falconbury added dimension in the dining room with an elegant paneled ceiling design. Meanwhile, mirrors above side tables add glamour to the master bedroom room, fitting for a starlet. “To me, this bedroom is very Carole Lombard in the 1930s,” Musso says. “I can picture her coming in and throwing her fur on the bed.” Sounds like a Hollywood ending for a picture-perfect collaboration between client and designer. Phipps Plaza, one of the city’s toniest retail centers, is best known as the home of stores such as Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue, Gucci and more. For the fourth year, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles partnered with Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios to build a Dream Kitchen at the mall that’s as stylish and chic as its well-heeled clientele. Guided by Michael Bell, the project featured the inspiration of architect and interior designer Joel Kelly. This year’s kitchen showcased the best in contemporary design grounded by traditional elements. “We’re used to thinking of modern design as something slick and unapproachable,” says Kelly. “This kitchen is somewhat of a library for cooking. You get what you need, use it, and put it up. The ladder adds an element of movement and approachability that begs you to explore the interior, just like at a library.” And while the clean-lined space is functional, the look is approachable too. “I call it Southern contemporary,” explains Bell. “We’re not Miami or SoHo. There’s no lacquer here. This space has clean lines, but this kitchen could still anchor a more traditional Atlanta home. It’s modern, but you can still connect with it. There’s a warmth to it.”
CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC “With the idea that the kitchen feels industrial to some degree, we used a Cambria color called Wellington that felt the most ‘earthy,’” says architect and interior designer Joel Kelly of the countertop and range hood material. While the hood appears to be carved out of one piece, each leg is made from four three-centimeter pieces of material fused together. Adds Michael Bell of Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios: “Cambria quartz allows you to get an even flow of color without using a pattern that’s too dominant. There’s a lot visual interest in the material.” opposite “Part of the kitchen’s design is about exploring and uncovering the unexpected,” says Kelly of the orange-hued morning bar.

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING European storage solutions, specified by Bell, allowed interior cabinet space to be maximized to its fullest potential. Plate holders can actually be removed, enabling the cook to carry an entire stack at once. A more traditional-style faucet is the perfect juxtaposition to the contemporary cabinetry. opposite “Even with modern design, there has to be a softness and elegance to it,” says Bell. That elegance is most evident in the wood finish, which has three layers to add depth and subtly highlight the beauty of the pecan wood’s grain patterns. This year’s debut Dream Bath at the Luxury Living Show demonstrated that it’s all in the mix. Conceptualized, fabricated and installed in just three short weeks, this chic bath, designed by Home ReBuilders employs an array of materials—marble, wood, quartz, metal and acrylic—that elevate this minimalist space into a striking sanctuary. Intertwining contemporary and classic details, such as a sleek vanity set against a bead board backsplash, further enhance the mix-it-up concept. “This bath has an industrial-like appeal that’s neither traditional nor slick and modern,” says designer Kate Bartlett of Home ReBuilders. “Our goal was to create a balanced style with as many textures as possible.” 74

ALL IN THE DETAILS Modeled after vintage factory windows, the shower’s glass-and-aluminum enclosure was fabricated by Atlanta Glass & Mirror, Inc. “The custom shower came to life from a sketch drawn on an iPad,” says designer Dylan Gilliam of Home ReBuilders. “What makes this bath truly remarkable is that there are so few items straight from stock.” For example, the sink units with metal bases were made exclusively for this space. Other custom elements include antique wide-plank walnut flooring from Atlanta Specialty Woods and cabinetry by Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios. Double-sided sink vanities create a partition between the bath’s wet and dry zones. The latter area features a ventless fireplace from Builder Specialities with an adjacent beverage center outfi tted with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. “This elegant lounge space is perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee while starting your day or for pouring yourself a glass of wine while getting ready for an evening out,” explains Gilliam of the bath’s luxe amenities. “However, beyond the lifestyle design features in this bath, each and every material used is designed to stand the test of time and function flawlessly, without the need for extensive upkeep.”

LIFE QUINTESSENTIALLY ATLANTA
THE PORCH
INTERIOR DESIGNER LIZ WILLIAMS AND ARCHITECT FRANK NEELY CREATED THIS CLASSIC, SOUTHERN-STYLE PORCH FOR CLIENTS IN BUCKHEAD.
T
he porch, with its air of warmth and hospitality, has, in some fundamental way, come to defi ne Atlanta style. The porch was where our ancestors went for a salubrious cool breeze, a mint julep and the ever-present porch swing. Entire courtships took place on the front porch.
80
Truman Capote and Eudora Welty wrote of them; Scarlett O’Hara flounced and fl irted across Tara’s wide-columned expanse. Our grandparents’ generation used them almost exclusively to entertain guests on warm summer nights. It wasn’t
unusual for visitors to spend an entire evening socializing with their hosts without ever once stepping a foot into the house. They served as open-air sleeping sites for children and the occasional one-too-many houseguest. If the kitchen was the beating heart of the home, then the porch was its soul. Lives passed on the porch. Dogs slept in their cool shade. Tea was brewed on the porch in giant mason jars. Ferns were hung from the rafters. Wicker rocking chairs were the coveted seats. Porches were magic. The family that was on its porch drew neighbors like lightening bugs. The porch was an invitation, a hug and an embrace. My grandmother was proudly wed to a country doctor, but had her own theories about the spread of disease. She insisted that by resting on the cool floor of the porch in the heat of the afternoon, you could ward off the scourge of polio. Her nine children crowded the stone floor of the houses wraparound porch. And then came 1960s suburbia, and with it, the rise and prosperity of the newly appointed middle class. The valiant porch was not lost, but it did migrate to the rear of the house. Porches got bigger as our parents set their sights on contemporary homes. We may have moved on economically, but we continued to look
back to follow the Southern tradition of turning the porch into a gathering point for the family. Dinners were grilled on the porch and we dined al fresco (although our parents wouldn’t have called it that). They installed ceiling fans and continued the custom of painting the ceiling blue to allegedly ward off ghosts. They added lounge chairs and pillows. The fancier families added cast-iron furniture, white-painted urns and planters and created bona fide bars on their porches. Then it was our turn, and we really went to town on our porches. From Sandy Springs to Buckhead, from Smyrna to Stone Mountain, we started renovating. We have tricked them out with outdoor furniture and fabrics that out-fancy the living room. We have fi re places, pizza ovens and commercial-style ranges (goodbye old-fashioned briquette grills!). We don’t have the lone tilting umbrella-topped table in dented aluminum; we have furnished seating and dining areas. We have gone way past enclosing them with screens. Some of us have even turned them into year-round conservatories by walling our porches in glass. Our children will surely put their individual stamp on the quintessential porch, but one thing is certain: they will have porches, and they, too, will unabashedly love them.
