New showrooms and collections at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) sizzle like this month’s temperatures

Local architect/designer Jeffrey Bruce Baker pulled out all the stops with his signature line for CITY COLLECTION , a big-ticket lineup of case goods that combines exquisite detailing with luxurious materials. Waxed bronze wears to a patina similar to art sculpture, while silver plating—dipped 22 times for the perfect fi nish—gleams like fi ne jewelry. Scaled diminutively for the pied-à-terre or intimate room niche, the fascinating August Butler can be used as a bar, TV cabinet, accessories chest or whatever else you fancy. Suite 320. “ My breast cancer diagnosis was the heaviest weight I’ve ever had to bear.” Karyn K Kary Ka ary yn Ma M Mars Marshall, ars rsh hall hall ha ll,, DC Breast Cancer Patient Doctor of Chiropractic World Champion Weightlifter

As a world-record-setting weight lifter, I was determined to bring the tenacity that had served me so well in the gym to my fight against breast cancer. My team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) combined advanced cancer treatments with supportive therapies like acupuncture, nutritional counseling, and chiropractic care to help ease the side effects of my treatment. I know it made me a much better fighter. Today, I’m busy training for fitness competitions again. And I’m more certain than ever that CTCA® was the right choice for me. Karyn received Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) – a procedure that combines surgery and a single dose of radiation to help patients finish treatment faster. To learn more about IORT, visit cancercenter.com/IORT or call 1.888.845.2471. No case is typical. You should not expect to experience these results.

ROYAL JOURNEY A trip through the sweeping Scottish Highlands offers a unique glimpse into the fabled green lands and the lost art of traveling by train

The Royal Scotsman traverses the Scottish countryside, embarking from Waverly Station in Edinburgh. 24

MANY DESIR ABLE DESTINATIONS, although picturesque, feel the need to fabricate a “sense of place” for visitors. An area’s local color is often exaggerated to the point of cliché. In Scotland, that sensibility is authentic, imbued in everything from tartans and Scotch to the sublime countryside. A recent journey aboard The Royal Scotsman, part of the legendary OrientExpress group, proved an idyllic way to experience this part of Great Britain—no special effects required. Upon checking in at Waverly Station in the heart of Edinburgh, the capital city, we were greeted by the siren call of bagpipes and escorted from a private, fi rst-class

waiting area to the train via red carpet. Once aboard, cozy sleeping car accommodations in the form of staterooms enveloped in marquetry welcomed us, along with compact, yet efficient, bathrooms and wardrobes. The heart of the train, however, was the observation car, where guests could sample from among more than 50 brands of Scotch and meet others along for the journey. Our group included an eclectic mix of travelers from South America, other parts of Europe and the United States. Because the train never exceeds 36 guests, personalized attention by the staff is unparalleled, and each passenger is remembered by name.

LIFE (travel) The Scottish Way Before or after embarking on the train journey, consider extending your stay in Edinburgh at THE CALEDONIAN, A WALDORF ASTORIA HOTEL, which recently underwent an extensive renovation. thecaledonian.waldorfastoria. com GREENYONDER TOURS offers numerous walking excursions, including the hidden gardens of The Royal Mile. greenyondertours. com No trip to Scotland is complete without a visit to the Royal Family’s former floating residence, BRITANNIA. royalyachtbritannia.co.uk. For those who choose to explore the country beyond Edinburgh, THE ISLE OF ERISKA is a hotel and spa located on its own island that offers the quintessential country house experience, along with great golf (another must-do while in Scotland). eriska-hotel.co.uk Located on Loch Lomond, CAMERON HOUSE is ensconced in a baronial mansion and features two golf courses, four restaurants and numerous outdoor activities, including falconry and luxury cruises on the loch. preferred hotelgroup.com FOR MORE INFORMATION, GO TO VISITBRITAIN.COM OR VISITSCOTLAND.COM.

clockwise, from above Dining on The Royal Scotsman includes a mix of formal and informal meals. The train awaits to embark from a rural station. Meals on the train celebrate regional ingredients, including Aberdeen Angus beef, wild salmon and game dishes. Journeys on The Royal Scotsman begin and end in Edinburgh, which features both medieval and neoclassical architecture. The Isle of Eriska’s manor house foyer.

From the observation car, I watched for hours as panoramic, hypnotic scenes of green hills and valleys dotted by sheep rolled past. Afternoon tea included Scottish and English favorites— shortbreads and scones—all served with jams and heavy dollops of cream for good measure. Our journey of the Scottish Highlands included a stop at Rothiemurchus, an estate under the stewardship of one family since the 16th century. Fly fishing and clay pigeon shooting are hallmarks of the property, as are skilled (and patient) instructors. Another stop in storybook Keith, a nearby village, warranted tastings at Strathisla Distillery, home to Chivas Regal. Back on the train, as we began our return trip to Edinburgh by way of Dundee, the soft and quiet undulations of the rocking train lulled me into a reflective state as I considered this quintessentially Scottish experience—one that truly exemplifies “sense of place” in its purest form. royalscotsman.com

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi von Habersham Summer is winding down, and so, too, is everyone’s beach reading. Considering how tedious my childhood summer reading lists used to be (Did my eighth grade teacher really think I would enjoy Gulliver’s Travels?), I now only read books that I fi nd enjoyable. And the books which I have enjoyed most over the years have been romance novels and scandallaced fiction mixed with a little Southern humor. The ’70s and ’80s were a high-water mark for guiltypleasure reading. First, there was the granddaddy of all romance novels, The Thorn Birds, by Colleen McCullough. Don’t tell me that you weren’t swept away by the book’s tale of forbidden love on the Australian Outback. And you could always count on Judith Krantz’s novels, especially Scruples, for steamy, tawdry action of a certain kind. The latest Dominick Dunne tome was as much a requirement for ’80s-era beach trips as were tubes of Bain de Soleil Orange Gelée. How I devoured The Two Mrs. Grenvilles and People Like Us. It was great sport to figure out which Manhattan socialites had inspired the stories’ characters. If you read W at the time (which, as you will recall, was then a broadsheet rather than a glossy), you knew exactly who they were. And when I needed a break from the steamy side of Manhattan society, I turned to two of my favorite Southern writers, Celestine Sibley and Lewis Grizzard. Their books, which captured the sleepy charm of Southern life and the foibles of those damn Yankees, were what I inevitably ended up reading on Sunday afternoons, when respectable books were more appropriate, not to mention more refreshing, than racy novels. Alas, time marches on, and now we seem faced with reading tales of pasty-faced teenage vampires or, even worse, melodramatic chick-lit heroines (and I use that term loosely). Neither one is a suitable substitute for dear old Celestine Sibley or even Judith Krantz, for that matter. Summer reading ain’t what it used to be, and that’s why I’m anxious for fall to arrive. That’s when my thoughts turn to another passion: mystery novels!

WHERE TO GO

NOW OPEN New dining destinations around the city

Chef Doug Turbush is now welcoming patrons to STEM WINE BAR, a sister space

adjacent to his first solo food venture, Seed Kitchen & Bar, in Merchant’s Walk. Partially open to Seed’s dining room, Stem’s intimate room features an ai3-designed U-shaped bar as its centerpiece. Boasting North American, Spanish, Italian and French wines, Stem regularly hosts tastings and other wine-centric events to indulge guests in rare vintages. The kitchen serves European-inspired small plates, along with artisanal cheeses and charcuterie. (678) 214-6888; eatatseed.com Emory Village’s newly opened and innovative INK & ELM, a neighborhood-friendly establishment, features a lounge, restaurant and tavern under its 7,000-square-foot roof. The 1920s-style lounge and raw bar focuses on Champagne cocktails, while the adjacent dining room offers a rotating seasonal menu with locally harvested ingredients that change daily. A spirits cart is rolled around to tables so that patrons may select an international digestif to end their meals. The more casual spot of the trio of spaces is the tavern, which boasts classic American fare and specialty bourbon cocktails with housemade bitters. (678) 777-8058; inkandelmatlanta.com After tasting success with Midtown’s La Pietra Cucina, Bruce Logue has opened the doors to his newest Italian eatery, BOCCALUPO. Handmade pastas steal the spotlight, with options like made-from-scratch 20-yolk tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and paradelle Bolognese and Logue’s famed black spaghetti with Calebrese sausage and shrimp. Grilled octopus, seafood stew and traditional Italian desserts can also be found on the extensive menu. (404) 577-2332; boccalupoatl.com

IN SEASON

Local chefs dish on what they’re tossing in their summer salads

Kevin Rathbun’s KR STEAKBAR has met with great success since opening earlier this year, so an expansion of its dining room comes as no surprise. Having secured an additional 2,000 square feet at ADAC, the tapas-friendly restaurant will add 70 seats (including private dining) and a second bar in the coming months. (404) 841-8820; krsteakbar.com KALE ME CRAZY is the newest health-centric juice bar on the scene. The upscale Inman Park venture blends madeto-order organic and coldpressed juices in its boutiquelike space. (404) 600-5048; kale-me-crazy.com Chef Keoko Turner, formerly of BISTRO NIKO, has joined the culinary team at Bantam + Biddy to spearhead menu development. (404) 907-349; bantamandbiddy.com. CAKES & ALE is also shaking up its roster, as executive pastry chef Eric Wolitzky, a New York transplant who starred on Top Chef: Just Desserts, departs. He’ll hand over the reins to in-house baker David Garcia. (404) 377-7960; cakesand alerestaurant.com ▼ DOWNTOWN RESTAURANT WEEK invites food enthusiasts to experience $15, $25 or $35 prix-fixe brunch, lunch and dinner menus at more than 30 participating Atlanta restaurants, ranging from casual eateries to upscale destinations. 7/27-8/4. “Late-summer salads are a personal favorite because of what's available. I love to make croutons with black beauty eggplant from Serenbe Farms. Simply cut the eggplant into small squares, follow standard breading procedure, and fry till crispy—they are a hit! We typically pair them with charred pimento peppers, tomato vinaigrette, Many Fold Farm Brebis cheese, and whatever lettuces farmers can produce in the late-summer heat.“ –Hilary White, The Hil at Serenbe

30

“For something a bit more interesting in salads, I like using roasted green beans with a sharp vinaigrette or adding roasted sunchokes for a sweet, nutty note. I would be remiss if I didn’t suggest a grilled Georgia peach over some local greens with a bit of balsamic. For a side salad to complement something off the grill, try cubed watermelon with a bit of mint and feta, or some chunks of summer melon that are marinated in vinegar, thyme and honey.” –Nick Leahy, Saltyard

“Roasted red beets, fresh watermelon, goat cheese and arugula with a light chive vinaigrette can liven up any summer salad. The sweetness of the melon cuts through the earthiness of the beets, and the goat cheese adds a tangy creaminess. Another good addition is toasted walnuts. Eat well and have fun with it.” –Benjamin Castro, The Mill Kitchen & Bar

OPENING NIGHT PATRON PARTY “Steppin’ Out at Serenity Acres”

Friday, August 16, 6:30 p.m. $225/person Dress: Steppin’ Out Chic Join us at this year’s Patron Party! The theme for the entire Showhouse is “Steppin’ Out!” We are taking The Cashiers Designer Showhouse to a new level of fun, variety and excitement! The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with the arrival of the first bus from the general parking area. From the moment guests arrive, they will be awed by both the magnificent views and the layout of Serenity Acres. After being greeted at the Main House with a festive beverage, guests will have the first opportunity to tour the three homes until 8 p.m. They can also wander down to the Stables where an exceptionally tented paddock awaits with open bars and light fare preceding dinner and dancing. The Showhouse’s interior designers and landscape artists will be on hand to discuss their work and answer questions. Distinctive regional craft works will be featured in each room, as a primary effort of the 2013 Showhouse is to focus on the talents of the remarkable artists throughout the area. Debbie Hudson with Kathy Rainer and Tricky Wolfes of Atlanta’s Parties to Die For have coordinated a stunning event with Lee Epting Catering of Athens, Georgia. Liquid Pleasure will be providing fun, unstoppable music for dancing. The Showhouse Shops and Bascom Boutique will be open. The tented paddock, beautifully decorated rooms and landscapes, delicious food and great dance music will make for an unforgettable evening.

But these days, you’ll find the long-time New York City and Connecticut resident donning the hat of a gardener, as she is spending more time in the South. Specifically, Charleston, where she has recently purchased an old property in the city’s historic district and is currently renovating it both inside and out. Roehm catalogs the challenges and successes of this project on her blog and website, Carolne Roehm.com. Her recent success and outreach on social media is as thoughtfully executed as the photographs that she recently created for her most recent book, titled Flowers (excerpts of which are featured here). We caught up with Roehm in anticipation of her visit to Cashiers later this month.

WHY DO YOU ENJOY LIVING IN THE SOUTH? Well, I am a pretty recent resident, but I do know what I already like about the South—and it goes to the women of the South. Whether in Virginia or Louisiana, Charleston or Cashiers, you’ll find women who like to be feminine, wear color and create beautiful homes, tables and gardens. We seem to be losing track of the “living arts,” but not in the South. Here, they have a vested interest and are engaged in the concept.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN IN CHARLESTON DIFFER FROM THE GARDEN IN YOUR CONNECTICUT HOME? For starters it’s smaller. But what I have chosen to do is focus on what I can’t have in Connecticut like magnolias, camellias, gardenias, grandiflora and Confederate jasmine, too.

WHAT’S YOUR NEXT PROJECT? For my next book

PHOTO CREDIT: PHOTOGRAPHS REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM FLOWERS BY CAROLYN ROEHM ($85, CLARKSON POTTER).

[she’s the author of eleven titles], I’m concentrating on gardening, as opposed to flowers.

WHAT ARE YOU GROWING THIS YEAR? I most want to talk about what I am doing in the vegetable garden. I am making a big effort to get heritage seeds—nothing engineered in any way, just organic like the rest of the intelligent planet. And I am working with whips of apple trees, those from our Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Nothing hybridized, modernized—just out of the past, out of nature.

Carolyne Roehm will be speaking at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 17, at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Her presentation will be followed by a book signing and luncheon. Tickets are $100 per person, and the event is presented by Landmark Vacation Rentals.

ABOUT SERENITY ACRES

There is an indescribable mystery and peace about Serenity Acres. Purchased in 1990 by prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist George Bishop, it served as a retreat for the Bishop family from the pressures of business and from the intense heat of South Carolina coastal summers. Following Bishop’s purchase of the original house and a few surrounding lots, he began expanding the property’s acreage. The magnificent views and the gentle roll of the land enabled his family to realize their dream of an idyllic family enclave. Clearing 20

began and soon large stables, pastures and a riding ring were completed. The entire Bishop family enjoyed riding and would often take the long winding trails together through Serenity Acres. As the family interest in horses, particularly Tennessee Walkers and Paso Finos, grew, Bishop and his daughter, Debra, traveled extensively throughout the Southeast to horseshoe games. Today, prize ribbons still line the walls of the tack room as well as the walls of manager Bobby Henkel’s office. Developing a strong love for the area, the Bishop family enclosed a large garage to become the Bunk House. This ultimately led to the construction of the Guest House

which looks out directly over the Stables, providing breathtaking views of Cow Rock and Laurel Knob beyond. The Stables became a focal point of the plateau overlooking the view. Over the years, Bishop and his wife battled illnesses, but the peace and calm of Serenity Acres provided them solace. To this day, the property provides comfort and a deep spiritual connection to the beauty of the Cashiers Valley. Now, with three charming homes, magnificent stables, paddocks, walking and riding trials and a fishing pond, Serenity Acres represents the legacy of a family deeply moved by the area and the peace it provides.

As the Zachary-Tolbert House was being designated as a national treasure, the ďŹ rst of 16 Showhouses opened to the public. Through the years, this extraordinary event remains our annual source of revenue. An enterprising Board, a dedicated corps of volunteers and a dynamic office staff fuel the important role the Cashiers Historical Society takes on by being engaged in the past but boldly stepping into the future to educate and preserve. As Chairman of the Cashiers Historical Society, I would like to thank each of you for your generous support of CHS through your visit and interest in the Cashiers Designer Showhouse. The proceeds from Showhouse have not only allowed us to pursue our mission of preserving the heritage of Cashiers Valley but have guaranteed the safeguarding of two mid-19th century homes, The Zachary-Tolbert House and the Waddell House, and two early 20th-century facilities, The Kitchen Dependency and the Old School House. I would like to offer a simple and heartfelt thank you. We look forwward to welcoming you to our events again and again as a guest or volunteer. We are forever grateful for your support.

“The entry in this Showhouse reflects the colors selected throughout and pays homage to the Southern artists whose work represents the heritage of the home’s locale. “A bedroom should energize you in the morning and be a calming refuge at night. To achieve that balance in this year’s Showhouse, a mix of richly colored custom-printed textiles, sumptuous linens, museum quality art and classic pieces of furniture from the Robert Brown collection are used. Rest and relaxation is achieved!” As one of the country’s top firms, Atlanta based Robert Brown Interior Design has been published in numerous national magazines and was recently featured in the prestigious Kip's Bay Designer Showhouse. On a yearly basis, the firm's portfolio may include luxury residences, commercial high-rise projects and custom motor yachts. Design signatures include classic proportions, clean lines and extraordinary furnishings to create a warm and inviting design aesthetic. 349 Peachtree Hills Ave., Suite A5B Atlanta, GA 30305 (404) 917-1333 robertbrowninteriordesign.com

“Whether your art preference is the innovative or it tends to the timehonored techniques—and wherever you begin your gallery, on a stairwell or in a grand room—the selection and its arrangement should always be the best expression of both you and your environment.” John Collette Fine Art was founded in 1971 on Sanibel and Captiva Islands and now has become a major art source for the entire Southeast. The gallery, now located in Cashiers, seeks out established painters and sculptors as well as emerging artists. This full service gallery has become a “must-stop” for art lovers on the Highlands plateau. 104 Hwy. 107 S. Cashiers, NC 28717 (828) 743-7977 johncollettefineart.com

“Individually, and in our design collaboration, we always aim for classic comfort that’s enhanced by regional flair. Though we stick to a plan, we always leave room for the unexpected and somehow that usually ends up being something literally “found” on the day of installation. Then, we add in aesthetically pleasing pieces. Now, we have set the scene and enhanced this year’s Showhouse’s fabulous views.” With projects in garden and interior design across the deep South, James Farmer Designs strives to achieve the elegance of the region. James T. Farmer recently released his fifth book, A Time to Cook. Maggie Griffin is an associate designer with James Farmer and the principal designer at Maggie Griffin Interior Design. She is also the author of the blog, “Bellissimo and Bella.” 103 White Columns Dr. Kathleen, GA 31047 jamesfarmer.com

“My first love is Country French. Secondly, I love all things French. In decor, I like to mix French, Swedish, English and a little Asian. The effect of mixing all of these styles gives rooms a personality and a sense of evolution. In this way I am able to incorporate clients’ favorite pieces from all cultures. I also work with different fabrics, patterns and textures to create an interesting mix that is visually stimulating and pleasing to the touch.” Charles Faudree is the author of numerous interior design books. “I often say to my clients, ‘It is about the mix, not the match.’ Decorating has brought me great joy through the years. I am one of the lucky ones that love what I do! My clients have become friends and my friends have become clients. My goal for a legacy is to be a good person who brought some beauty to the world.” charlesfaudree.com 30

“The signature elements in the rooms that I design create a collected look! I like to combine traditional accents with fresh and transitional styles. You will find mellow antiques mixed with art glass lamps, rustic elegance found in the French primitives combining with the glamour of an upholstered bed treatment, all coming together for the luxurious look a bedroom deserves.” Kathryn Greeley has been providing professional interior design services in the Southeast for more than 30 years. She is a member of the American Society for Interior Designers and is especially noted for her gracious entertaining and expert knowledge of tabletop collections. Greely’s feel for accessories in any room, including her combinations of the tried and true with the pop of textures and patterns is the key to her appealing designs. 619 S. “Design is not local, but personal; a home should be warm and inviting, happy and colorful, a place where all are always happy to stay.” Francie Hargrove’s love affair with design began while following her mother and grandmother around as they “antiqued” their way through South Georgia. She started her career in design by working with Bettye Fincher Interiors in Atlanta, and soon after launched her own design firm and retail boutique in Perry, Georgia. Sixteen years later, Hargrove relocated her firm to Cashiers. In addition to her own line of pillows, lamps, decorative accessories and upholstery, she continues her passion of designing timeless interiors with projects from Connecticut to Texas and across the South.

“At this year’s Showhouse, we have the honor of debuting the latest from the No. 9 collection by Jim Thompson Fabrics—it’s a must-see! ” Since 2008, The Mercantile has become a destination for those seeking high quality and style. In 2009 and 2010, the shop was awarded Best of the City, then Retail’s Star of the Year in Home Accents Today. In 2011, Barbara Heath won a National Award as Rising Star Retailer. With Chicago roots and a family history in both retail and design, Heath has become both a key resource in the design community as well as a premier designer. The pursuit of her passion is what Heath attributes to her success, that and the love of her family. 1430 Dresden Dr., Suite B100 Atlanta, GA 30319 (404) 816-0060 mercantileatlanta.com

“At 460 million years old, these mountains are timeless. Therefore, I take my design cues and palette from them. The grays, greens and colors of lichen and moss are beautiful complements to Cashiers interiors.” Sally Johannessen, owner of Dovetail Antiques, believes that it's the details that make a room, and ultimately a home. She shops in France and beyond to find the antiques and eccentricities that make each space she designs unique. “Even years later, when I walk into a room I have designed, I still inhale when my eye falls upon something special,” she says. “It’s a moment of bliss for me.” 252 Hwy.107 S. Cashiers, NC 28717 (828) 743-1800 dovetail-antiques.com

“Our philosophy when designing a room is to aim for the unique but to also always create comfort. For this Showhouse, we have mixed antique side tables with new daybeds and lamps and used updated fabrics to give the space a special character. The ambience we achieve for our clients should then always be balanced by the things they love.” For over 24 years, Edwin Lusk and David Paterson have been offering interior design services to discriminating clientele from the Plateau and beyond, throughout the South. Their recently opened showroom in Cashiers reflects their broad spectrum of tastes by showcasing English furniture, decorative lines of French antiques, new upholstery, great home goods, and, of course a few new surprises each year. Cashiers showroom, (828) 743-5400 Highlands office, (828) 526-5400 fletcherandlee.com

“The design trend in Cashiers today leans towards a casual elegance. We see our clients adding antique lighting—especially chandeliers—and personalizing their mountain homes with other interesting antique pieces.” After cutting her teeth in the antiques business in Charleston, Vivianne Metzger moved to Cashiers in 1996. Now, along with her daughter and son-inlaw, Cherie and Bill Tibbets, she scours the English countryside each spring looking for 18thand 19th-century antiques and accessories to fill their shop and warehouse. Their Cashiers shop and expansive warehouse are treats to visit; it's as if stepping back into England during the 1800s. You can always tell they enjoy the hunt.

“Design on our mountain plateau is definitely heading to a more neutral palette. Basic colors such as beiges, creams and gray are being sprinkled with greens and reds pulled from nature for hints of color. Flower patterns are borrowed, too, to brighten our Cashiers interiors.” Lynn Monday has been a designer for over 30 years. She is a member of the International Interior Design Organization and has a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Virginia Intermont College. Notable commercial projects include the High Hampton Inn and Chattooga Ridge Club, while her residential projects span from Cashiers to New York. “For this Showhouse, I will be adding texture to the walls and then play off that texture with more sleek art and objects. In regards to the objects, I’ll use fewer of them, but make sure they are larger in scale to create a strong statement.” Amy D. Morris specializes in transitional design that is fresh, clean and eclectic. Her work has been featured in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Traditional Home and Décor. Her award list is long, but most recently she was chosen as one of Atlanta Decorative Art Center’s Rising Star winners and nominated as one of the finalists for Southeast Designer of the Year. Even with all these accolades, Morris believes that her point of view is only half of it and that “the project is successful only if the space represents the client.”

“Twiggy and primitive are out as the ‘mountain look’ evolves. Antiques remain a staple, but the mix of classic with contemporary moves us in a modern direction.” George Oliver and Eddie Alvarez have been working in the design business for over 30 years. Their designs—used throughout the United States and England—are based on a client’s individual needs as well as the project’s location and architecture, with a focus on comfort, style and detail. In 1989, they opened A Country Home Antiques, which offers a unique collection of antiques sourced from around the world, as well as upholstery and home furnishings. This is their 11th year participating in the Cashiers Designer Showhouse. 5162 Cashiers Rd. Highlands, NC 28741 (828) 526-9038

“A ‘sophisticated country mountain’ look best describes the design style in Cashiers today. We incorporate all of the classic beauty around us, and then, for fun, mix in contemporary elements to make a design special.” Skip Ryan has been delighting clients for more than 30 years with his knowledge of antiques and special talent in interior design. His shops in Cashiers, Ryan and Company Antiques and the Catbird Seat, represent an array of dealers offering American, English and Continental antiques, as well as accessories and unexpected finds.

“Whether a fabulous dining room or a bathroom, a relaxed mood with flair is key. I’m so honored to be with Charles Faudree at this year’s Showhouse because he is the master of that concept.” With an eye for detail, coupled with the personal attention she gives to each client, Jena Salmon's successes span the United States. She has attracted lifelong clients from Los Angeles to Boston, from Virginia to Dallas and now in Atlanta. She has won numerous awards and magazine recognitions, but likes to say the best reward are the clients who say “I love it!” Atlanta, GA (404) 863-5998 jena@jsdesigngroup.com jsdesigngroup.com

“Front porches are synonymous with southern living and even more important to the style of living in the Cashiers Valley. Easy living as personified by a swing or deep comfort, the kind that is provided by lots of beckoning pillows— those are elemental.” Ann and Rody Sherrill opened Rusticks in August 1992 with a focus on handcrafted willow, hickory and cedar furniture. The business evolved steadily to a much wider focus and to a larger inventory of all things needed for a mountain home. The handcrafted motif is still an important part of Rusticks but with lines of upholstered furniture, fine reproductions, Turkish rugs, European antiques and a wide range of exceptional accessories and gifts added to the mix. Ann’s instinctive style has been featured in publications such as Veranda. Canoe Pt. Cashiers, NC 28717 (828) 743-3172 rusticks@ymail.com; rusticks.com 34

“Although it’s important that a powder room’s design be functional, I like to push the boundaries. Privacy, practicality and intimacy are key, but I also go for the unexpected by using contrasting textures and repurposing certain elements and materials.” Maxine Sikes, a former architecture student and business school graduate, became interested in art and design at an early age. She recently sold her Huntsville, Alabama business, leaving behind a 25-year career in home renovation, restoration and real estate sales. Since moving to Cashiers, Sikes and her husband, Jeff, collaborate on custom furniture and interiors using components from Jeff ’s latest passion, reclaimed materials. Sikes enjoys using these materials, juxtaposing them with classic elements to create an elegant mountain ambiance. “I am intense about proportions. In many older mountain homes like this one, where there are connecting low and high ceilings, which can confuse the eye and body, I like to close that void and level it all off. There can be no warmth and feeling in a room without architecturally correct proportions.” -Dotty Travis Travis & Company was founded by interior designer Dotty Travis in 1976. Today, it is one of the foremost showrooms in the Southeast, proudly representing the most exclusive fabric and furniture lines in the world. Travis & Company is also a destination for exceptional antiques and collectibles.

“Comfort is an absolute must in bedrooms. The perfect mattress, a soothing color, or really great sheets ( life is too short for sleeping on cheap sheets), achieve not just that need for physical comfort, but speak to the other kind; the kind that eases you into the day every morning.” Carole Weaks has been designing and decorating houses for over 25 years. With projects throughout the United States, and offices in Atlanta and Highlands, this Southeast Designer of the Year and ASID Design Excellence Award winner, works closely with each client to blend their particular lifestyle into a beautiful design that is timeless. “Every growing thing changes over time and never sits in one static state, even for a few weeks. That is what I love about working with gardens.” Though his work is centered in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, Glen R. Gardner’s reach has extended from Louisiana to New York City, and here in Cashiers, too. Awards and grants have gone hand-in-hand with Gardner’s extensive studies and they continue to inform his designs in gardens, land planning and historic landscape preservation. P.O. “Since the atrium water feature is the first space encountered by the visitors in this year’s Showhouse, it’s both a unique opportunity and a responsibility to evoke a mood—a welcoming threshold for Serenity Acres.” Working throughout the Cashiers-Highlands Plateau for 15 years, Bob Dews has focused on creating water features that harmonize with the surroundings. He specializes in creating features to emulate the many naturally occurring streams and waterfalls found locally. His work is also nationally recognized. P.O. It takes a unique talent to envision the pathways and create hardscapes with rock and boulders that enhance the beauty of a region. Robert Henderson perceives designs in a special way, whether moving rocks or installing benches particularly placed on special paths. Henderson also serves Jackson County as a volunteer fireman and first responder for the Little Canada community. (828) 293-2216 ; therightpeople1@yahoo.com

left Designers Margaret Bosbyshell and Clary Bosbyshell Froeba, of Margaux Interiors Ltd., with homeowner Gigi Rouland in the home’s living room. below With a belief that “you can do a fabulous house and not leave Atlanta,” the designers shopped locally for most of the home’s furnishings. Vintage Maison Jansen cocktail tables and matching chests were found at Jane Marsden Antiques (a treasure trove, says Margaret), while the armchairs, upholstered in a Jim Thompson silk fabric, were purchased at Belvedere. opposite Commissioned by the homeowners, a pair of horse paintings by artist James Way captures the personalities of Gigi (whose whimsical nature is reflected in this piece) and her husband, Chris, whose more serious equine counterpart is displayed at the other end of the living room. A Sunbrella velvet-covered sofa and two scroll-back slipper chairs provide another spot for conversation.

“IT MUST BE THE HOUSE.” That’s how Atlanta designer Margaret Bosbyshell explains her good fortune in decorating one stately Atlanta home for two consecutive families. For her fi rst foray at this house, Margaret worked solo. But a few years later, when hired by current homeowners Gigi and Chris Rouland, Margaret was joined by her new design partner, daughter Clary Bosbyshell Froeba. Although the home’s interiors (fi rst published in the May 2009 issue of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles) were previously inspired by the great decorator Dorothy Draper, this time it was the work of another female phenom, Kelly Wearstler, who prompted the home’s edgy flair. Graphic rugs, geometric-print fabrics and a black-and-white color scheme punctuated by jewel tones all speak to the homeowners’ adventurous spirits. 77

Bosbyshell.indd 77

6/25/13 2:53 PM

Margaret chose a now-discontinued Schumacher zebra-striped stair runner for her previous clients. The black-and-white animal print works just as well among its updated surroundings as it did in the home’s former scheme. right Clary discovered the library curtain fabric, “L’Africain” by Jed Johnson Home, which both designers would subsequently use in other projects. Not only does the tribal print add warmth, lushness and edge to the room, but it’s also appropriate, considering the homeowners’ love of Africa. A pale Stark Carpet hide rug off sets the deep graphite color of the room’s walls and ceiling.

Considering the vigor that these bold furnishings brought to the house, the mother-daughter duo instinctively knew that refi ned, elegant pieces were needed for balance. Their admiration for antiques and important 20th-century furniture because of their romance and history led the designers to introduce the Roulands to furniture designed by famed French design fi rm Maison Jansen. Peppering the home are two cocktail tables, a pair of commodes and a sideboard that all bear the Jansen stamp, an added bonus, says Margaret, to the furniture’s good looks and excellent quality. For all of the home’s dashing features, it is supremely livable, thanks in no small part to a generous helping of comfortable furniture and durable fabrics. Both real and faux leather (which can 78

Perched around the master bedroom’s fireplace are armchairs and an ottoman upholstered in Schumacher’s “Imperial Trellis” velvet in Peacock. The designers chose the chairs for their scale and clean lines, which play off the curves of the tray ceiling. The gilt mirror and Currey & Company sconces were purchased by the home’s former owners. left Primed for stylish slumber, the room’s four-poster bed by Julia Gray is dressed in monogrammed Leontine Linens bedding. Gigi Rouland’s favorite tourmaline necklace inspired the azure-colored taffeta curtains. The daughters’ playroom is reminiscent of a circus Big Top, especially with its striped curtains and stuffed animal heads. Not only does the Stark Carpet nylon animal print rug echo the room’s animal motif, but it also stands up to the rigors of playtime. left The girls’ queen-size beds feature headboards covered in sensible faux suede by Osborne & Little. The lifestyles of the couple are very much in evidence, too, with his dark, masculine library-cum-office at one end of the house and her trellised ladies’ drinking parlor on the other, a suitable spot for charity committee meetings and, at times, a cocktail or two. Describing their working relationship, Margaret notes, “We might butt heads, but when all is said and done, we agree that we must both be proud of [our work].” And mother and daughter are in complete agreement that this house is something to be proud of— for the second time. “You have to be careful not to over-design a modern home with too much furniture, otherwise the point of the space is lost, advises architect and designer Joel Kelly, who helped create a thoroughly modern abode for a pair of Atlanta homeowners. Kelly warmed up the white living room with bursts of color, like the Bordeaux-colored B&B Italia chairs, and organic elements, like the standout natural tree root table. A contemporary arc lamp by Flos adds a visual punch to the room. The sofa, from Context Gallery, is accented by custom throw pillows in Zimmer + Rhode fabrics. The rug is by Stark Carpet.

The house was built to accommodate the homeowners’ wish for a central kitchen, from which the rest of the spaces flow. AFTER 10 YEARS AND TOO MANY WEEKENDS toiling on home repairs, Atlanta couple Savas Koutsantonis and George Michaels turned a homeowner 180. The duo traded in their 100-yearold Craftsman-style manse to build a thoroughly modern abode designed for the way they live, no longer the other way around. “Not only were we constantly working on the next project, but also there were fully furnished rooms that no one ever walked into,” says Koutsantonis of their former house. “We desperately wanted a more minimalist lifestyle and a house that allowed a lot of natural light.” The reasons for leaving their old house provided the framework for their biggest project to date. Wishing to remain in their Midtown neighborhood, the duo chose to build their forever house where a dilapidated 1920s apartment complex stood. “The neighbors threw a party to thank us for removing the eyesore,” says Koutsantonis. In its place they built the neighborhood showstopper. Also stepping in was their longtime friend and Shutze Awardwinning interior designer and architect Joel Kelly, who helped the pair contend with the delicate balance of planting a modern home among Midtown’s Victorians and Craftsman-style bungalows. “Even though it’s a stark contrast to the surrounding homes, it doesn’t feel like it’s out of place; it feels special,” says Kelly. To prevent the contemporary house’s aesthetic from being intimidating, Kelly bathed the exterior in warm white paint and natu-

ral stones. “Color is crucial. Cooler whites can easily come across sterile, but the milky white creates a comforting envelope,” says Kelly, who carried the color palette indoors as well. Stepping inside, you’re immediately struck by a sense of space. “We started with the premise that the dining room, living room and kitchen would be integrated, sort of like a loft,” says Kelly, who employed a neutral color palette and texture in the form of stacked quartz rock walls to enhance the cohesiveness of the ground floor room. Peppered throughout is the homeowners’ art collection. From abstract to tribal, the various pieces personalize the space and punctuate it with color. “We have a couple of large rooms and a garage, so I refer to it as a condo on steroids,” quips Koutsantonis, whose overall impression of the house is “easy.” In fact, a common thread in Kelly’s design repertoire is comfort. “My fi rst thought is how it will feel,” he says. “I want every person who walks into a space to connect to it on some level. One of my favorite things to hear is, ‘It’s not my style, but I love this house.’” Not only did the couple gain a house with the space and feel they wanted, but they also regained their weekends. Located within walking distance to Piedmont Park, the spacious, open home is an entertainer’s delight. “If there’s a concert, then our friends know to congregate here fi rst,” says Koutsantonis. “The great ambiance makes them want to stay.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 93

SNOW WAS DUSTING THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS the January night that a group of friends—gathered at Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm for the annual Taste of the South event and auction to benefit the Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA)—placed the winning bid for a South Georgia farm soiree. The prize: dinner prepared by renowned Atlanta chef Kevin Gillespie at Will Har-

ris’s equally acclaimed White Oak Pastures family farm. On that freezing winter day, an outdoor dinner in the South Georgia heat sounded mighty glorious. By now you’ve likely heard of White Oak Pastures and the good (read: hard) work they put in to provide organic, grass-fed beef to the public from their certified humane farm. Their cattle are raised and processed on land where Harris’s father and grandfathers began raising livestock in 1866. And for the past several 95

years, the Harris family’s commitment to sustainable farming practices and their growing interest in multiple species farming has become the gold standard of agriculture. In addition to cows, they raise pastured sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, geese, guinea fowl, ducks, rabbits, eggs, organic flowers, fruits and vegetables; their most recent addition is pigs. They boast two on-farm abattoirs and a dining pavillion that includes a professional kitchen—a perfect lunch spot for the farm’s 85 employees and a fantastic venue for special events like this farm-to-table dinner. Back when the party plan was fi rst hatched, Harris promised to take care of the location and food if Gillespie would just prepare it all. A bit of research and planning and Gillespie was en route to Harris’s remote Southwest Georgia outpost with just one small box containing a few spices, some vinegar, oil and his knife roll. When he walked into the farm’s kitchen, Harris took one look at Gillespie’s sparse belongings and asked, “How many guys do you need to help unload the rest of your stuff?” Not necessary, Gillespie said. No stranger to his craft, the chef has mastered heated kitchens, dazzled America on the awardwinning television show Top Chef—reaching the top three during the show’s sixth season and taking home “fan favorite” honors— and manned his own restaurant, the critically acclaimed Gunshow. 97

The farm's rustic decorative accents complemented the evening's earthy, fuss-free menu, which included grilled duck breast with Indian spiced okra. But on this sweltering Georgia afternoon—the hottest day ever recorded at the farm—he was simply excited to prepare an authentic farm-to-table dinner, one where everything he might need was available at White Oak Pastures. What transpired between noon and the evening meal was a lesson in confidence, stewardship and true appreciation for local ingredients. The farmers offered Gillespie bundles of carrots, okra, eggs, tomatoes, eggplants, herbs and freshly cut sunflowers, zinnia, bachelor buttons, amaranth and yarrow from the garden that grows steps from the kitchen. Together, Harris and Gillespie walked through the processing plant, meeting the butchers and choosing meat and poultry from animals that were in the pasture that morning. Only the cheese, graciously donated by Sweet Grass Dairy in Thomasville, Georgia, and the beverages were brought in from outside the farm. Ashley Hall, an enthusiastic SFA member and beverage maven for Quality Wine and Spirits in Atlanta, devised a thoughtful list of refreshing beers, sparkling wine and chilled white and

rosé wines. A delightful cocktail dubbed “The Gentian Farmer” honored Harris’s work with Gentian liqueur. At fi rst, Harris, Gillespie and Hall considered they were maybe playing it too casual for these folks who donated a sizeable amount of money before flying in on a private jet, and there was a temptation to fall back on the standard fancy and formal dinner party protocol. But the pastoral scenes and raw bounty of White Oak Pastures is what initially drew the group in, so the trio delivered an authentic experience: Homegrown flowers mixed with poke weed stalks and berries sprouted from vintage jars, pitchers, and an old glass battery case that adorned the tables. A multicourse dinner, plated on mismatched farmhouse china with silver and layered linens, was served. Presented with the grace and hospitality that defi nes our region and styled with the beauty of nature in mind, the folks gathered around the table indulged as White Oak Pastures paid homage to local ingredients, while a generous donation benefitted the Southern Foodways Alliance. 101

QUINTESSENTIALLY ATLANTA

SWEET TEA

What makes an Atlanta house a HOME? In our eighth installment of a year-long series, we examine the essentials of every Atlanta residence. MARCIA SHERRILL investigates the only liquid on our list.

A COVERED PORCH AT THE HOME OF ATLANTA LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT RICHARD ANDERSON OFFERS RESPITE FROM THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER AND PROVIDES A PERFECT PLACE FOR TAKING TEA.

if

there was ever any doubt about locals’ drink of choice, then Starbucks’ purchase of Atlanta-based Teavana for $600 million last year should dispel it. Atlantans want their tea, and they want it bad. When I was little, sweet tea was our water. It was the only

104

other beverage that you could count on in every Southern home. My grandmother insisted that my Yankee-born mother learn, fi rst-hand, how to truly brew decent tea. A giant glass jar—left in the backyard winter and summer—is fi lled with water, sugar and the obligatory

Lipton teabags and left to stand. By afternoon, delicious sweet and frothy iced tea awaited family and friends, topped with a sprig of mint from the nearby garden. Sweet tea would continue its reign as the official beverage of the South until the late-20th century—and sweet it was! The syrupy concoction might make your teeth ache, but that stopped no one. Coffee is, of course, just fi ne for breakfast—chicory, please—but the rest of the long, steamy days of summer are best spent with sweet tea. Even McDonald’s steadfastly holds its price of a large sweet tea at one dollar. A generation ago, ordering iced tea at Mary Mac’s Tea Room and anywhere else of repute meant, “I’d like a glass of sweet tea over ice,” and that remains a Southern restorative. But now we boldly order Arnold Palmers or half-sweet, half-unsweet teas. I myself have grown so accustomed to diet sweeteners that only a dash of real sweet tea is enough to send me racing to the dentist for a cavity check. I recall a trip to France in the 1980s, where I tried desperately to lay my hot sweaty hands on some iced tea. The French marveled as they watched me pour hot tea over ice cubes. In New York, waiters

are still nonplussed when I order iced tea in December. They want to refuse, stare, shake their heads, offer something warmer. Here in Atlanta, we treat iced tea with the dignity it deserves. We may drive around all day with a Big Gulp of sweet tea perilously clutched between our thighs but at home, we don’t settle. Sweet tea is an art, deserving of fancy crystal glasses, silver teaspoons and other necessary accoutrements: decorative cut-glass pitchers (even exotic Moroccan pottery and French jugs will do), simple syrup containers, specialty ice cubes and straws. From Pier 1 and Tuesday Morning to B.D. Jeffries and Tiffany’s, the offerings for tea service are plentiful—there are rattan-wrapped glasses and Elsa Peretti teaspoons. Our mothers and grandmothers pass down linen napkins and lace tablecloths, and sometimes we even exchange them for exotic silk or voile substitutes rolled in napkin rings made of glittering stoneencrusted dragonfl ies, reminiscent of the dragonfl ies encircling the glass jar of iced tea brewing in the backyard. Old habits—and traditions—don’t die. They just get prettier.
