Local style. What is it? How do you define it? This month’s issue is a veritable slideshow of what’s new, what’s hot and what’s ahead for Atlanta’s homes. As always, Atlanta style is somewhat elusive. Luckily, that keeps the editors and staΩ here on our toes, always looking for the next big thing. This month, we’ve discovered an array of recently-opened shops and showrooms that promise to oΩer fresh—and sometimes bold—points of view, which is something we always like to see. Whether or not you agree with it or even like it, it’s hard not to appreciate something original, unique, one-of-a-kind. Speaking of unique, this month’s issue also features highlights from this past spring’s Decorators’ Show House & Gardens. It, too, is a gold mine of inspiration and a good barometer of where local style is headed. Enjoy! Clinton Smith Editorial Director twitter.com/clintonrsmith

Family bonds grow best in a garden. Sometimes it’s about picking the biggest and prettiest blooms. Sometimes it’s about standing silent, holding hands and watching a deer sip water from a quiet stream. And sometimes it’s about sitting on a swing and giggling all the way down to your toes. These are just a few of the moments they’ll never forget – moments spent with you in this very special place. Homesites from the low $100,000s. Homes and cottages from the high $200,000s. WEBER’S VACATION HOME IN SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MEXICO, IS A PLACE FOR RESPITE AND REJUVENATION. HER COURTYARD GARDEN IS A LABORATORY OF SORTS, A PLACE TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW SPECIMENS OF PLANTS THAT SHE HAS DISCOVERED. OPPOSITE: MARCIA WEBER, ONE OF ATLANTA’S BESTKNOWN GARDENING GURUS, ALONG THE ROCKY SHORES OF TANYARD CREEK IN THE HEART OF BUCKHEAD.

DESIGN DOSSIER

MARCIA WEBER A combination of childhood memories and international travel have influenced the time-tested horticultural expertise of this Atlanta gardening guru

It’s only fitting that Marcia Weber, owner of the decades-old Marcia Weber Gardens to Love, divides her time among three houses—one in Ansley Park, another in Highlands, North Carolina, and the third in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The gardening guru is loathe to sit back and twiddle her green thumbs. “I’ve renovated my garden in San Miguel more than once,” Weber admits. “I’m very production-oriented, and enjoy getting things done wherever I go.” Perhaps that’s why Weber claims her greatest relaxation comes when she’s at home tending to her vegetable garden, where, among other things, she’s harvested more than six varieties of potatoes—a tribute to her grandfather’s love of the land. In fact, it was the sheer joy her grandparents derived from planting flower and vegetable gardens on the family’s farm in Noxubee, Mississippi, that played such an influential role in cultivating her own knack for botany and horticulture from an early age. “As a girl, I was never inside. I was always outside on the farm, where I would strike out and walk to the back of the property and try to get lost,” she says. The open, rolling prairie of Mississippi, described by Weber as “that landscape where the sky meets the Earth on the horizon,” was also instrumental in establishing an appreciation for natural beauty that gave her the leap of faith she needed to go from manager of greenhouse and nursery operations—a title

she held at her first job out of college—directly to founding her own business, a 30-year-old firm that now boasts more than 15 employees. “I feel very fortunate to know what I’m good at, to know why I’m on this earth, to know what pleases me,” Weber says. And nowhere is it more evident that gardening is in her DNA than through her signature Marcia Weber Gardens to Love landscapes, which are designed to act as natural extensions of a home’s architectural and interior beauty. It’s thoughtful planning for growth—not unlike interior design—that sets her discerning eye apart from the pack, resulting in environments that not only appeal to all five of the senses but also show an appreciation for natural proclivities. MY PERSONAL GARDEN REFLECTS A PENCHANT FOR…controlled

chaos. I like to see the heavy hand of man fighting it out with the strong will of nature. WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME IS…I’m an open book. They know all about me and all my stories. THE THINGS I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT ARE…gardening gloves, hand pruners, pencils and paper. I even take these things with me when I travel. It gives me comfort to know that they are with me in case I get stranded in a foreign place and need to earn a living. And I never leave the house without wearing lipstick.

What’s Hot Now! As AH&L editors continually comb the metropolis and scout its hidden corners, we find one fact hard to ignore: Atlanta design is constantly evolving, with neighborhoods expanding and businesses burgeoning at every juncture. Already home to AmericasMart, ADAC, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Turner Broadcasting and 14 Fortune 500 companies, Atlanta is quickly gaining esteem with global travelers, luxury brand flagships and international design authorities drawn to our city’s vibrancy, originality and Southern hospitality. As tastemakers infiltrate developing design districts and refresh our most frequented shopping haunts, they beget a steadfast flow of new shops, showrooms and seemingly perpetual restaurant debuts. Here, we cut through the chaos to reveal the latest and greatest of local design revolutions and why you should take notice.

works beautifully for urban settings. Most of the plants Klyn selects are low maintenance, so there’s minimal pruning or irrigation required, and design services vary widely in both cost and scope, running the gamut from something as simple as a front door path to a complex rooftop garden. Former Jerry Pair & Associates antiques director Crawford Bray can see the beauty in overlooked objects. In June, he opened his own booth at 14th Street Antiques Market, where

SPA SENTIO IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHED BY SARAH DORIO

During the course of his high-profile career, Atlanta native Max Sanchez went the distance as a hairstylist, landing top stints at Las Vegas’ Wynn Hotel, Los Angeles’ Beverly Hills Hotel, Miami’s Delano Hotel and several Ritz-Carlton properties before returning home to open Spa Sentio—along with brother Chris and cousin Holly Osias— at the Westside Provisions District in May. Designed with a sexy, chic, white-hot aesthetic, its interiors double as a canvas for a rotating selection of art from nearby Solomon Projects—including the likes of Joe Walters, Kathryn Refi and David Humphrey—while a colorful nail polish-drip mural by Scott Ingram (see cover) smartly camouflages the door to the treatment rooms. The space is anchored by a serpentine manicure table, crafted from reclaimed wood and iron by Decatur-based blacksmith Jason Smith, and features luxe pedicure bowls that Sanchez describes as “the Bentleys of pedicure stations.” Clients submerge their feet comfortably from gilded Louis XV French bergère armchairs that have been reupholstered in bright white Sunbrella fabric, companions to the stunning settee that greets guests upon arrival. For a real indulgence, the 24K gold facial, enhanced by revolutionary Gamma technology, is said to create incomparably radiant skin. Spa Sentio (which means to feel, perceive and experience) has the local exclusive on Sundari skincare products while Niko, a favorite of Hollywood stars, is the makeup of choice. Wedding services and bachelorette parties are specialties of the house, and if you’re seeking a senior hair stylist, Sanchez and Osias still wield their shears at the adjacent Dragonfly Salon. 1170 Howell Mill Rd., Suite 102, Atlanta 30318. Nicholas Kniel Fine Ribbons & Embellishments in Sandy Springs just marked its 10th anniversary. And while the shop has long carried ribbons, buttons, flowers and feathers that can’t be found anywhere else in Atlanta, Nicholas Kniel has also become a go-to source for clients across North America and Europe who are looking for unique embellishments. What many in Atlanta may not know is that beyond the beautiful silk flowers (ranging in size from teeny to 12-inches in diameter) and ribbons (priced from 50 cents per yard up to $65-plus per yard for vintage styles), Nicholas Kniel is known for an array of other

services, including millinery, bridal, holiday décor consultation, custom-made masks, chic French-style bulletin boards and gift wrapping for important occasions. “Every time I wrap a gift, the client says the recipient is never going to want to unwrap it. I love it when I hear that they looked at it for an hour before they opened it. It’s great for special moments,” says Kniel. Perhaps not surprisingly, Kniel says that customers often use his store’s wares for home décor projects as much as for fashion. Take buttons, for example. “As many people buy them for curtains and pillows and home embellishments as they do for clothes,” he notes. With fall on the horizon, and the holidays not far behind, Kniel and his team are stocking the shop with a wide variety of elegant holiday ornaments and often work with customers to build, edit and

The location is convenient to Midtown and Buckhead dwellers alike, and the gallery’s moody manner makes it the perfect backdrop for colorful, contemporary art with a playful persuasion, including the works of Nashville-based headliner Trevor Mikula. For owner and interior designer David D’Ambrosio, a textiles scion who left Atlanta three years ago to work at Miami’s Fanny Haim, Redefined Home Boutique realizes a long-held dream. Returning this spring to snag prime real estate on Howell Mill Road, he’s filled the Westside Provisions District boutique with a fresh mix of industrial found objects, antiques, transitional upholstery and locally made custom furnishings; standouts include a charcoal-and-gold chicken wire cabinet and a richly finished round table carved from a single piece of wood. Lighting from Currey & Company as well as works by regional artists like Jenny Henley add pop to the neutral backdrop, which is accented by varying shades of D’Ambrosio’s favorite color— at the moment, aubergine. 877 Howell Mill Rd., Atlanta 30318. Say Yes to NO The Atlanta couple behind NO Wines What do you get when you bring together a family of hardworking Atlanta wine brokers, a Master of Wine, a veteran grape grower and a Sonoma County winemaking star? For starters, more than 100 years combined experience in the wine business. The result: NO Wines. Several years ago, Atlanta wine brokers Kathy and Hank Bremer, who own Pacific Southern Wine Company, hosted this esteemed group for dinner. That very evening, the idea was hatched to bring a quality, value-oriented wine to market. At the heart of the project would be great fruit for food-friendly wines. The packaging, reflecting the premise, would be approachable and fun. Now, almost eight years later, Kathy and Hank—along with Kathy’s two brothers, Jack from here in Atlanta and Bob from Florida—are preparing to harvest the seventh vintage of NO. This year, production will grow to 9,000 cases (from 1,200 originally) with representation in 20 states across the U.S. Sauvignon Blanc from California’s hilly Lake County and Chardonnay from picturesque Monterrey equates to good, fruit-forward juice. “Our intent with NO is not to dumb down wine or the enjoyment of it, but rather to eliminate the superfluous clutter that comes with conjured-sense-of-lifestyle, estate-designated, high-priced wines. In the case of NO, our name says it all,” laughs Hank. “No oak. No cork. No malolactic fermentation! No attitude! No kidding!” This translates into a truly drinkable wine made with the highest quality fruit, minimal winemaking interference, an easy-to-read label in the $15-per-bottle range topped with a Stelvin screw-cap closure. For Kathy, one of the greatest benefits to owning their own label is the opportunity to give back to the community. Since its inception, NO has participated in the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction and partnered with the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer annual fundraiser as well as the Susan G. Komen Atlanta-based “Tennis for the Cure” event. “The tagline ‘Saying NO to Breast Cancer’ fits perfectly with our commitment to breast cancer awareness,” notes Kathy, who donated a portion of proceeds from both events. NO is also a sponsor of the TEAM LA PINK for the upcoming 3Day in October, in which Kathy will participate. nowines.com

Though varied in their styles and execution, the works are bound together by the colors they all champion. nifer Cawley, Zuzka Vaclavik and Cara Enteles open at Emily Amy Gallery as part of “Down the Rabbit Hole: The influence of the Strange and the Familiar.” Cawley draws on the works of Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll and Henry Darger for inspiration in her mixed-media paintings that combine the processes of found-object collages and encaustics. Working mainly in watercolor, Vaclavik creates post-graΩiti, bio-morphic images that playfully

expand and contract. Entele’s paintings on aluminum sheets and acrylic panels investigate the predator/prey relationships in nature as well as man as a destructive force in the natural world. 9/10-10/15. 1000 Marietta Street NW, Suite 208, Atlanta 30318. tionally acclaimed artist Maggie Siner will be on display at Lagerquist Gallery for a two-week run later this month. HAVENS THE BEST OF ALABAMA Kiva Dunes It’s true in golf and in choosing the perfect golf and beach resort. There are many great golf courses and beautiful beaches throughout the world, but rarely are they found in the same vacation community. Kiva Dunes, located on the magnificent Alabama Gulf Coast, offers owners and guests one of these rare resort communities. Imagine a morning round on one of Golf Digest’s top 70 resort courses and an afternoon on a secluded beach with over a half mile of pristine, silky white Gulf Coast sand. The developers of Kiva Dunes had a vision to create a luxurious beach and golf resort that would evolve into a uniquely inviting beachside community rather than follow the conventional path of planting a “cookie cutter” resort on over 300 acres of coastal land that grows more precious every day. They have maintained this vision for 13 years and their patience has been rewarded. The architecture throughout the community varies from modern, to classic southern, to West Indies; and every home and condominium offers the amenities and atmosphere that is sure to soothe and relax. The first phase of Kiva Village, which blends perfectly into Kiva Dune’s architectural landscape is completed, and units are available for purchase – there will never been a better opportunity to buy. Whether it’s a view of the Gulf,

the pristine dunes, Mobile Bay or the golf course, Kiva Dunes offers you that perfect resort environment or “sweet spot” to reflect, unwind and entertain.

Ever the quintessential springtime event in Atlanta, this year’s ATLANTA SYMPHONY ASSOCIATES DECORATORS’ SHOW HOUSE & GARDENS marked the 40th anniversary of a highly celebrated local tradition. From April 17 through May 9, more than two dozen of the region’s foremost interior and landscape designers—plus more than 1,000 volunteers—descended upon a Colonial Revival-style home on Tuxedo Road in Buckhead to transform the breathtaking estate into the pinnacle of Southern style and grace. Beguiling more than 12,000 visitors to tour four acres of spectacular gardens and 28 inspiring designer spaces during its three-week run, the show house raised significant proceeds for the benefit of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Learning Community, the institution’s venerated youth talent development and outreach program. As one of the country’s longestrunning show houses, this year’s showcase, chaired by Mollie Palmer, demonstrated the best of Atlanta style now while setting a benchmark for 40 years of Atlanta design still to come. In the following portfolio, we oΩer an exclusive look at the rooms this exceptional group of designers created—and their many inspirations. 49

∏he 2010 Atlanta Symphony Associates Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, situated in Buckhead’s prestigious Tuxedo Park, provided a grand canvas for many of the South’s foremost design talents, who deftly transformed its elegant expanses into 28 sophisticated designer spaces. Inside, world-class art from the likes of Ed Ruscha, Kimo Minton and Andy Warhol decked the walls, while fine furnishings filled spaces such as a charming solarium and cheerful greenhouse overlooking the lily pond. The home’s gracious front entrance welcomed visitors to the tour in style, and the abundant gardens conjured up remembrances of Claude Monet’s famous “Giverny,” for which the show house was named. An unforgettable opening night party, signature gift shop from Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts and convenient Maestro’s Market were just a handful of the additional attractions that made this Decorators Show House a must-see event—and a fitting way to encapsulate its four-decade legacy.

Easy Elegance G-l-a-m-o-u-r! That’s the word that best describes Shon Parker’s intimate dining room. Creating the feeling of a space put together over time—a “collected” approach—Parker’s goal was to bring a more casual ambience to a space that’s too often rarely used. Surrounded by shimmering draperies in charcoal silk taΩeta, the cocoon-like room featured a mix of furnishings running the gamut from an Art Deco sideboard to contemporary tufted chairs. The result: an informal space with formal flair. TIM COUGHLIN AND SHON PARKER, SHON PARKER DESIGN INC.

Form & Function Design Galleria’s scheme for the kitchen highlights symmetry and repeats the soft curves found in the architecture throughout the house, such as mirrored doors over the ovens inspired by the home’s clerestory window. A new pewter-and-scagliola hood from the Matthew Quinn Collection for Francois & Company is framed by book-matched slabs of marble; sourced from Italy by Marmi Natural Stone, they were artfully sculpted to follow the lines of the hood. Two square islands eliminate the traΩic issues one long island would have presented multiple cooks and provide more usable countertop space, too. The most ingenious part? Out from under the seating island, a large wood countertop can slide out and connect the two. Light & Bright For the design of this dining room, Meg Adams knew that she wanted to employ aqua set against a soft neutral backdrop. To that end, she found the perfect Obsorne & Little fabric and had an Empire-style chandelier custom strung with real turquoise to serve as the room’s crowning jewel. Blue also abounds inside the painted Swedish vitrine as well as in the lively birds nesting beneath a Louis Philippe mirror. Anchoring the space is a reclaimed wood table topped with a slab of honed Calcutta gold marble from Levantina, its delicate curves continuing the room’s soft symphony of shapes. Linen-garbed seating—including five chairs and two benches—complements the lines of an antique Swedish bench fronting the window, from which sun streams all morning long. Making an Entrance Inspired by the architectural stairwell and black-and-white marble floor, Christy Dillard created an entryway with Neoclassical glamour and ample charm. Using a large-format, handstenciled damask wallpaper as her foundation, Dillard mixed materials and textures with uncompromising ingenuity. A pair of Louis XVI-style consoles, topped with slate blue marble, greets visitors and acts as a chic alternative to a traditional entry table. The blue hue is repeated in a sumptuous slipper chair down the hall, part of a smart seating group that encourages guests to linger. A 19th-century Swedish settee from Bjork Antikt was altered, giving it a backless silhouette, and upholstered in a hand-stenciled Greek key fabric for a graphic eΩect. Custom canvases and aged gold “Jessica” chandelier from Bradley-Hughes add contemporary appeal that ushers this room into the 21st century and beyond. CHRISTY DILLARD, DILLARD DESIGN GROUP

Sit a Spell In the secondary entry—this one in the lounge area—designer Cindy Davis put a timeless yet modern twist on traditional style. Contemporary art is juxtaposed against sophisticated, faux-painted walls. And by pairing a classically shaped sofa and armchair in an unexpected finish with an iron-and-stone cocktail table and luxe rug, Davis raises the bar on melding unique colors and textures. Creativity was key in transforming this greenhouse into a lush oasis perfect for entertaining. Here, a Swedish-inspired dining area is illuminated by a one-of-a-kind chandelier; custom-crafted by Randy Korando, the metal fixture is fitted with glass bottles that double as vases and votives. Other unexpected touches include purple sea glass imbedded in the flooring, carrying out the cool color palette drawn from orchids, palms, ferns and smartly selected succulents throughout the space. Meanwhile, the outdoor seating area features what seems to be classic Barcelona chairs. Only upon touching do you realize that they’re made of concrete. Finally, an assortment of reclaimed furniture and accessories round out this design team’s vision of a luxe yet eco-friendly retreat. RANDY KORANDO AND DAN BELMAN, BOXWOODS GARDENS & GIFTS

Janie Hirsch wanted to design a powder room that was sassy and feminine—but with masculine appeal, as well. She turned to the Furniture Guild in Canton to create a custom vanity with a shagreen-look leather inset, taupe milk paint finish, travertine top and a Vitraform sink that’s the first of its kind in the country. Composed of gold leaf set between two glass bowls, the sink is lit from beneath for a glamorous glowing eΩect, while a polished brass faucet with crystal lever handles sparkles like jewelry. In stark contrast to the black absolute granite floors, pale green walls brighten the small room while adding dimension that might have been lost in a more typical neutral. Hammered brass lanterns from Baker impart a floating eΩect while two mirrors and works of original art render the room artfully balanced. JANIE K. HIRSCH, J. HIRSCH INTERIOR DESIGN

Lush & Luxe Because it overlooks a grand and intricate garden, designer Bill Hudgins opted to make the terrace more serene and subdued. Adding contrast to the restrained color palette is a mix of textures, including synthetic wicker chairs and a cast-stone Corinthian table that also serves as the striking pièce de résistance. Exotic Japanese maples oΩer shade while perfectly clipped American boxwoods act as accessories in sleek, metallic-glazed planters. Other choice greenery includes a dwarf myrtle topiary and lush grass arranged in handmade containers. The combination of neutrals and earthy greens makes this terrace the ideal spot to relax and recharge, while the gorgeous view also makes it the perfect setting to entertain. Simple Sophistication Carole Weaks is known for creating elegant spaces, and the solarium that she designed was no exception. Upholstered pieces decked out in neutral fabrics from the Cameron Collection at Ainsworth-Noah filled the room. With an abundance of natural light flooding the space, and her selective use of color, Weaks created a scheme that was soft and pretty, but not overly sweet or feminine for a public area. Pretty in Pink Inspired by fashion as well as the fresh beauty of cherry blossoms and dogwoods, designer Melanie Turner struck the perfect balance of high style and high function in this sunroom. Throughout the space, the designer used indoor furniture cleverly covered in outdoor fabrics. A resin-top table, with a gold bangle-like base, is one of the room’s most fetching elements. But it’s more than a mere fashion statement; its custom height makes this table the perfect spot to dine, read or work. Shying away from heavy textures and patterns, Turner gave the space a light and airy ambience with a white, taupe and pink palette, accented with turquoise and gold for chic appeal. The goal was to show that good taste comes in a variety of price points and that pieces can be mixed and matched to create the perfect, personal space, whether by mixing a high-end sofa with a less-expensive coΩee table or choosing aΩordable upholstery while splurging on one-of-a-kind art. McIntosh proved that the options are limitless and that good design is within reach of every budget. COREY MCINTOSH, MCINTOSH INTERIORS

Child’s Play Designer Margaret Norcott set out to inspire young imaginations in this fun and quirky crafts suite, its warm color scheme inspired by the floral Roman shade. Recycled art works reminiscent of folk pieces were an intentional choice because, “I didn’t want the art to be intimidating,” she explains. “I wanted children to look at it and feel that they could reproduce the piece.” The art works are placed high on the walls, out of reach from messy little fingers. But a bevy of nooks and cubbies were built at accessible heights, making cleanup and organization a breeze. Likewise, the rug comprises modular carpet tiles from InterfaceFLOR; single tiles can be replaced easily in the event of a paint or glue spill. MARGARET NORCOTT, MILIEU DESIGN GROUP INC.

Classic & Colorful Peggy Snider-Houghton and Tracy Davis of Closets and More banish the boredom of washing, folding and ironing clothes in the updated laundry room they designed. White-painted traditional doors oΩer a crisp counterpoint to the ruby red washer and dryer, making the space cheerful and welcoming, too. PEGGY SNIDER-HOUGHTON AND TRACY DAVIS, CLOSETS AND MORE

Sensuous Style Talk about star power. Designer William Peace isn’t a name dropper, but the furnishings he incorporated into this library were designed by some of the rock stars of the style world—an Edward Fields rug, a wood-turned Moulthrop bowl, a Jan Showers cocktail table and an Andy Warhol lithograph, to name a few. What’s more, a rotating mix of fine art found its way into the room each week of the showhouse’s three-week run, including photography, sculpture, paintings and other works on paper from local galleries. Against the sensuous, tactile backdrop created by Peace, the art became the star attraction—no name dropping required. WILLIAM B. PEACE, PEACE DESIGN

Understated Approach Inspired by the late British garden designer Russell Page, Marcia Weber of Marcia Weber Gardens to Love took an understated approach to the design of the loggia. And while the space was quietly elegant, it did not lack for originality. Against the home’s classic Georgian architecture, Weber juxtaposed contemporary furniture, whimsical light ďŹ xtures from The Urban Electric Company and simple yet unique plantings, all of which seem right at home in this semi-private space. Luxe & Inviting For this Venetian-inspired master bedroom, designer Patricia McLean chose a George III Japanned cabinet as the most prominent piece, its scarlet red reappearing throughout the room. Two magnificent panels of de Gournay wallpaper, for example, feature the red hue; set in custom bamboo frames, their height seemingly expands the space. Additionally, they’re beautiful foils for the room’s gold silk wall covering, enhanced by elegant window treatments—in this case, scalloped and box-pleated—that are McLean’s signature. Meanwhile, multiple seating groups, including a curved-back Venetian canapé paired with a custom quatrefoil-shaped ottoman, provide ample places to read or discuss the day’s events. A 15th-century Italian figurine—plus hand-carved wooden birds strategically perched through the space—adds character while ribbon-hung pictures lend a feminine touch. Bold & Beautiful Two spaces in the home’s private quarters, conceived and executed by furniture designer and artist Raymond Goins, excel in the unexpected. The vestibule features a lacquered trellised wall in persimmon while the master bath—with a backdrop by Design Galleria—includes a water closet with floor-to-ceiling verre églomisé panels in a saΩron palette as well as a luxurious tufted-leather door. The focal point in the bath, however, is the abstract painting of a horse, also by Goins. It defines the space and best represents the one-of-a-kind style for which the designer is known. Ready, Set, Decorate! Ever wonder how a show house room comes together, and what ideas and tips you can incorporate into your own home? Decorator Stan Topol, designer of this year’s living room (who installed this entire space in less than two hours!) oΩers up this valuable advice. SINCE THIS IS A SHOW HOUSE, YOU ESSENTIALLY HAVE A BLANK CANVAS FROM WHICH TO WORK, BUT YOU

If you are a really good decorator, you start with what people already have and add to it—and this room had potential. DID YOU SEE IT AS A CHALLENGE? Anybody can paint a room. When I took on this show house space, I wanted to do it like a decorator would work with a client. That is, work with what was given to me. The only things I did to the space were to remove the crown moulding and add a chandelier. WHERE DID YOU GO FROM THERE? The lost art of conversation still exists in my life. I wanted to create one room that’s not based on the placement of a television set, a place where people are actually able to talk to each other. CHOSE NOT TO PAINT THE ROOM. WHY?

show houses in this country that can claim to have a DeKooning, Ruscha and Frankenthaler all in one room. BUT YOU DIDN’T START DESIGNING THE ROOM AROUND THE ART. Decorating

is an art form. It’s almost a religion. There are correct ways of laying out a room, whether you’re doing a modern room or a traditional room. Once you know how to do a good floor plan and have hand drawn it to scale, then you start looking for the pieces. You never start with the rug, the furniture or the art. You start with a plan.

BUT PEOPLE SAY THERE ARE NO RULES TO DECORATING

I can tell you how it should be done and why it should be done. You may not agree with my colors or choices in art, but I’m never wrong with a plan. NEVER? Not even once. ANYMORE.

PEOPLE STILL TALK? I THOUGHT THEY SAT WITH THEIR

THIS ROOM LOOKS LIKE IT COST A MILLION DOLLARS.

It’s frightening when you flip through a magazine or turn on a TV show; nobody thinks in terms of how light comes into a room, how high a TV should be or how low a chair should be to the floor. I haven’t met too many people who stay at the age of 25 for the rest of their lives. I like proper spaces, rooms that have a feeling of comfort, restraint and discipline of fine art.

BUT THERE IS VALUE HERE. I got really upset over the price of a sofa I was planning to use for the show house, so I went shopping at AmericasMart, having forgotten what it is like to buy store-bought furniture. It was a fantastic experience. I was able to customize it, and then mix and match it. I was then able to take great antiques and put them in a situation with great upholstery and great fabric and be proud of my results. —Interview by Clinton Smith; Photographed by David Christensen

After a year of being together, my puppy, Turtle Pie, and I recently reached an impasse. She’s far from the cuddly I-worship-you-Marcia behavior of my old Frenchie, Peach Blossom. Not even close. Though I schlep her to every event in New York and Atlanta in my new gold python Sherrill Ltd. bag, even making it into The New York Times Style column, she has yet to become the dog of my dreams. Earlier this summer, I was headed to London when a friend escorted my chubby, 24-pound Turtle Pie to Birmingham—and to the safety of my mother Jojo’s house. But when I got back to Alabama, Turtle Pie had nary a lick nor a snuggle for me as she jumped through the weedchoked backyard with Momma’s Boston Terrier, Shug. My calls and whistles went ignored. Didn’t she miss me? Didn’t she want to sleep with me in a bed full of garage-sale afghans? No! She glanced oΩ my leg as she hurtled through the den in search of loose Nicorette gum, and then lay panting on some folded clothes rescued from the laundry room and its towers of poly-blend sheets and towels. She chewed a raw steak bone and shot me withering looks. What is a pet owner to do? I immediately called renowned pet psychic Victoria Love in Lilburn. Love lives on a three-acre compound chock a block with rescue pets; she is herself a piggie adoption broker, rescuing pot-bellied pigs when the craze reached its nadir. So, squealing like one of those pigs, I reached out to her. The divine Ms. Love has been gifted with psychic abilities since the age of 8 or 9, when her grandfather passed and she started having symbolic dreams. Without any prompting, I put Turtle on the phone for some panting. Then Victoria opened the conversation with “Turtle doesn’t understand you. She is not like the white dog I see that will be greeting you when

you pass.” White dog? There was my beloved Peach Blossom…waiting for me! Of course Blossom would be waiting! For a moment, I thought that Turtle might be the one to push me over that edge. I stammered a question: “What am I doing wrong? Turtle just is never aΩectionate!” Victoria explained that Turtle was a cat in a previous life, that she needed routine and stability. What? I am clearly the wrong person for that kind of reassurance. My daughter Anabelle no doubt feels just like Turtle. Am I a failure? Victoria reassured me by saying “Turtle Pie will be fine. She needs you to give her some comfort, some reassurance. She feels like she is letting you down. She has misgivings and needs you to invest in the relationship.” Yikes! I had invested $1,000 in that dog. Having paid for that love, I thought that issue was settled. She added, “You need to earn her trust. She wants you to carry her everywhere!” What? My back is already a wreck. Ms. Love then gave me sound advice about Turtle Pie concluding with, “It will be fine.” I breathed a sigh of relief. We were both sad to hang up. Then I remembered that I needed one last solution and raced to call her back. Afterward, I phoned my brother Billy, who was feeling a bit lonesome, with the good news that he didn’t need to buy a Boston Terrier as I was getting him a pig named Wiener Schnitzle. Billy’s pulled-pork barbecue days would now be a thing of the past as would his lonely nights in bed. psychicvictorialove.com
