The expression “show house style” hasn’t always evoked a positive connotation. Throughout the country, the term has been used to express a certain disdain for good taste, conjuring images of unattainable, fantasy-land designs, or gilded rooms only accessible to the rich and famous. Some of that attitude can be attributed to TV shows that promise whole-house makeovers for under $500 and, of course, in less than an hour. But the Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens has historically proven that “show house style” can be adapted to real-life residences. And this year’s tour—its 41st year!—perfectly melded high style with unique detailing that could be adapted to any home and budget. Maybe the takeaway was the hue in a rug that inspired a paint color or a detail on a curtain that would be perfect as trim on a pillow. Ideas—hundreds of them—were plentiful, and a $25 ticket provided access to the handiwork, imagination and expertise of more than 30 leading designers. And if you planned your tour just right, you could see all of their amazing ideas in about an hour! Beats reality TV any day of the week.

From the Blogs Comments, excerpts and highlights from what home design bloggers have had to say about recent issues of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

“I want to start off today with a cool and calm space that invites you to come in and rest your weary feet. This home was featured in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine—it’s located in Madison, Georgia. I can imagine it being a cool refuge in the hot and humid Georgia summer. When I first moved to the United States 15 years ago, I lived in Atlanta, and I love it for its style and elegance.” onceuponateatime.blogspot.com From the post, “Inspiration from Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles,” May 23, 2011

About our story, “City Chic | Country Calm,” May 2011 issue

“Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is a great resource for us.” “Not only do we use it for advertising to reach our local designers and clients, but we also use it for their great coverage of national and local designers. There is such amazing design talent in the Atlanta area. The thorough coverage makes it a magazine that I read for hours and keep to revisit later.”

STYLE (what’s hot now!) CURRENT CLASSIC

New gift boutique Travadavi calls upon the two surnames of its owner, Ann Travis Davis, who embarks on her first retail venture after 25 years with the king of ADAC showrooms, her family’s own Travis & Company. Vivaz glass tumblers, shawls by Yaser H and olive oil bath products from Panier des Sens make incredible hostess gifts, while The Romanov Collection crystal and Sorella Home dinnerware are items you won’t find anywhere else in town. Davis has taken a special interest in white and cream china, which she considers heirlooms for a new generation of brides and grooms. But don’t think of Travadavi as simply a one-stop shop for your wedding; deceptively chic melamine by Bongenre, vivid “Renouveau Russe” china from Alberto Pinto and industrial chic “Perche No” glassware by Simonetta Doni for Egizia all hold the promise of a gracious life far beyond it. 2300 Peachtree Rd. NE, Suite B-101, Atlanta 30309. (404) 844-0141; travadavi.com —K.A.

Jonathan Adler’s Westside shop and showroom displays complete room concepts and eccentric accessories.

GET IN THE GROOVE

New York-based designer, potter and “Happy Chic” crusader Jonathan Adler opened his Atlanta boutique in March, delivering his full range of products to a clientele ravenous for his groovy, colorful aesthetic. The stimulating shop is decked from top to bottom with his latest collections, such as Jonathan Adler Junior child-scaled furnishings, flame-stitched textiles and expertly crafted objets d’art (we’re loving his plays on organic forms, such as horns and tortoiseshells re-imagined in creamy white porcelain). 1198 Howell Mill Rd. NW, Atlanta 30318. (404) 367-0414; jonathanadler.com —K.A. FLOORING OF THE FUTURE

Bespoke table linens, stationery and hard-to-come by lines of china are among the fresh finds at Travadavi.

Since its launch in 2000, FLOR has revolutionized the industry with chic, sustainable,

infinitely transportable carpet tiles. Its fourth U.S. store hit the Atlanta market this spring, quickly capturing local fans of modern design. Still, FLOR offers plenty of styles to satisfy traditionalists, even those who want the look of classic wallto-wall carpet; more adventurous aesthetes may be drawn to ornate motifs like grillwork, suzani, ikat and patchwork. Customizable, less expensive and easier to install than traditional carpet, FLOR tiles can be effortlessly cleaned, replaced or swapped out to create an inspired new design. 1100 Howell Mill Rd. Fans of Boxwoods’ home entertaining accessories have reason to rejoice as it unveils its newest venture, a fully remodeled house adjacent to the

shop’s original structure. Expanding upon Boxwoods’ already-ample inventory, multiple vignettes showcase the latest in dinnerware, table linens, candles and other gorgeous accessories sure to make any dinner party a hit. 100 East Andrews Dr., Atlanta 30305. MUST-SEE MARKET

The Peachtree Battle Antiques Market is a new, onestop shop for antiques and vintage items. An array of dealers fill the former Smith & Hawken space with unique wares ranging from art and furniture to lighting, jewelry and one-of-a-kind home accents. Located in the heart of Buckhead, the market has already become a destination for designers and design enthusiasts alike. 2395 Peachtree Rd. NE, Atlanta 30305. While Hollywood bandies about the terms “eagerly awaited” and “highly anticipated,” none can be truer than the screen debut of The Help (DreamWorks Pictures). Based on Atlanta writer Kathryn Stockett’s beloved 2008 novel of the same name, the story of friendship and race relations in 1960s Mississippi not only resonated with readers in the South, but captured a worldwide audience, as well (as proven by a whopping 103-plus-week stint on The New York Times bestseller list). Starring actresses Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Sissy Spacek, Allison Janney, Cicely Tyson and Bryce Dallas Howard, the film was shot in the Mississippi towns of Jackson, Greenwood and Clarksdale. The sets will, no doubt, provide a glimpse of a lifestyle in days gone by, a time when antebellum homes, harvest gold appliances and parquet floors were the order of the day. The task of creating the worlds of Skeeter, Celia, Hilly, Elizabeth and Abileen fell to the film’s production designer, Mark Ricker, who credits the book Under Live Oaks by Caroline Seeebohm and Peter Woloszynski (along with old copies of Better Homes and Gardens) as a primary influence. While the book and script were natural starting points, the designer of such films as The Nanny Diaries and Julie & Julia looked to a familiar Southern film for inspiration. “I couldn’t begin this film without looking again at Gone with the Wind,” he says. The main houses of the five characters were shot in Greenwood, representing an amalgam of styles that “spanned the spectrum of Southern architecture,” explains Ricker. Skeeter’s house was a classic, white-columned antebellum mansion (“it was exactly as I imagined it in the book”), while Celia’s house was a pre-Civil War hotel converted into a private home and Elizabeth’s was a typical

middle-income ranch style. “It was my challenge to give each house its own personality that supported the characters in the film,” says Ricker, who scavenged every antique mall from Jackson to Memphis with his set decorator Rena Angelo. The design story translated into gold, pink and dusty colors for Celia, whose house—according to Ricker—was a “relic of an older generation, filled with all the history of a grander time and rich in family tradition.” Skeeter’s home was lighter in tone, and more comfortable, but one that still held a “formality of tradition.” Hilly’s house was considered the first phase of the new South and the interiors are “prim, perfect, pastel and icy,” details Ricker. Meanwhile, in keeping with her character’s personality, Elizabeth’s house received a bland and uneventful color palette while Abilene’s interiors were warm, inviting and simple in decoration. Author Kathryn Stockett (who recalls growing up in Jackson with avocado green appliances) was amazed at the film’s interiors. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw it, as it was a tangible representation [of the book] right down to every little detail,” the first-time novelist explains. She particularly noted the preparation that went into the decoration of Skeeter’s room, as there were “notes from friends, a yearbook sitting around, old horse ribbons— that familiar mixture of a room going from little girl to college.” While Stockett admits to having no input, having left the design of the houses up to the imagination of the reader, she was surprised at how small the initial rooms were. “Mark knows how to expand a room,” she reflects. “People lived in smaller rooms than they do now; he opened [them] up with armoires and high ceilings. It was like magic!” Movie magic, that is.

Naomi von Habersham AROUND TOWN WITH

Every year, when September rolls around, I find myself with a spring in my step. (I guess, technically, that should be called a “fall” rather than “spring,” but I don’t want to jinx myself. A broken hip is the last thing I need right now!) What’s not to love about autumn? We get to wear heavier clothes (Loro Piana!), eat heavier meals (Boeuf Bourguignon!) and drink heavier wines (Bordeaux, anybody?). It’s also college football season. Now that’s a religion in the South. Last year, I rooted for the Dawgs because I was dating a UGA alum, but not anymore, because he turned out to be, well, a dog. This year, I think I’ll go with the Yellow Jackets—more sting, less bite. September also means that school is in full swing, and I, for one, could not be happier that those teenagers can no longer spend their days cruising Buckhead. I can’t tell you how many times this summer I almost got hit in the West Paces Ferry Shopping Center parking lot by some recently licensed kid who was driving hell bent for leather. It made picking up my prescriptions at Wender & Roberts a real adventure! Of course, another adventure this time of year is the Atlanta social season. It has been said that Atlantans love to party so much that we’ll attend anything—even a turkey shoot. I guess that’s better than the New York social scene. Some of their more ambitious socialites will supposedly go to the opening of an envelope! Me, I’ll stick to something more dignified like the Corps de Ballet Kick-Off Luncheon, to be held on the nineteenth at The Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead. And I can’t forget this month’s Garden of Eden Ball, the big fundraiser for the Atlanta Botanical Garden. At last year’s event, some wiseacre told me that because of my, um, “mature” status, I must have visited the original Garden of Eden—yes, the Biblical one with Adam and Eve. Needless to say, I wanted to sock him with a poison apple!

Part of the Modern Atlanta MA11 Design is Human series of events—sponsored by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and organized by Sallie Johnston Events—Rashid’s appearance included a speech on his many inspirations, as well as a book signing and extended meet-and-greet with fans. Attendees sipped on a specialty drink called the “rosarita”—featuring Four Roses bourbon—and also enjoyed divine wines from Brancott Estate. They noshed on fresh pizzas prepared in the showroom’s very own luxury Gaggeneau oven. Photography by Philip Bonneau

Cakes & Ale just moved down the block in Decatur, adding a full-service bakery to its historic new digs at 151 Sycamore Street. In anticipation of the opening, we sat down with executive chef Billy Allin, who told us what’s to love about the new space and enlightened us on the ultimate prelude to a meal—the apertif.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY PERKS OF THE NEW CAKES & ALE? WE’LL HAVE A COMMUNAL TABLE FOR LARGE PARTIES AND FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT RESERVATIONS. THE BAKERY WILL SERVE ALL DAY: BREAKFAST PASTRIES LIKE SCONES AND PAIN AU CHOCOLAT, GRAB-AND-GO SANDWICHES ON FRESH BREAD FOR LUNCH (PLUS SOUP AND SALADS) AND, IN THE EVENING, IT WILL TRANSFORM INTO A PLACE FOR FORMAL PLATED DESSERTS AND CAPPUCCINO OR ESPRESSO. ATLANTANS AREN’T LARGELY FAMILIAR WITH APERTIFS. WHY SHOULD WE BE DRINKING THEM? WHEN I THINK OF APERTIFS, I THINK OF THE RITZ HOTEL IN LONDON, WHERE YOU SIDLE UP TO THE BAR TO ORDER A NEGRONI, BELLINI OR A COCHHI ON THE ROCKS. HERE, A LOT OF PEOPLE START A MEAL WITH A TANNIC RED WINE, BUT IT DEADENS THE PALATE. OUR APERTIFS ARE LOW IN ALCOHOL, SERVED IN SMALL GLASSES AND HAVE REFRESHING, BRIGHT FLAVORS—SALTY, SWEET, SOUR, NOT

NECESSARILY HOT OR COLD— THAT GET THE PALATE GOING. AND THAT’S ESSENTIAL FOR ANY GOURMAND, RIGHT? I HAVE A VERY SUCCINCT FEELING ABOUT WHERE A MEAL SHOULD GO. IT SHOULD APEX AROUND THE ENTRÉE, SLOWLY COME DOWN AND LET YOU EASE OUT OF THE MEAL. IT’S LIKE A BELL CURVE. DRINKS SHOULD BE THE SAME WAY. WE HEAR YOU’LL HAVE A FRESH OYSTER BAR IN THE BACK. WHAT VARIETIES CAN WE EXPECT? I’M HOPING TO GET MISTY POINT FROM VIRGINIA, HOG ISLAND FROM CALIFORNIA AND ISLAND CREEK FROM MASSACHUSETTS. IN THEIR PRIME, THEY’RE JUST THE PERFECT FOOD ITEM. WHAT FOODIE EVENT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LOOKING FORWARD TO? NEXT MONTH, I’LL BE COOKING AT THE SOUTHERN FOODWAYS ALLIANCE SYMPOSIUM [IN OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI] WITH CHRIS HASTINGS FROM HOT AND HOT FISH CLUB. I’M VERY EXCITED. I’VE NEVER BEEN. Choosing the right design team is always important, but the history of this Buckhead property made it especially so. The house, located on an 8.72-acre property inside the Perimeter, was designed in the mid-1960s by celebrated architect James Means for Thomas Martin and his wife, Peggy. The couple, with strong ties to Virginia, had toured the state’s Tidewater plantations, and was inspired by two of them— Carter’s Grove and Westover—for their own home. Knowing how important the house, land and garden were to the Martins, the current owners wanted to build on that legacy when they purchased the estate in 2006. So they asked their interior designer, Ralph Harvard of New York City, to interview landscape firms to determine which ones might be a good fit. Jeremy Smearman of Planters Inc. was one of those potential candidates contacted by Harvard—not knowing that the landscape designer had previously worked on the place. “He referenced the property but, at first, I didn’t recognize it by the address. As he kept talking, though, I realized what it was,” Smearman recalls. “I’d done a little work for the original owners so I was familiar with the property.” Convinced that Smearman was well attuned to the home’s design inspiration, and that he’d treat the landscape in a similar fashion, Harvard recommended him for the job. The first time Smearman met his new client, they walked the property for two hours, talking about the goal to preserve its architectural and landscape integrity. Still, says the landscape architect, “we had to reconcile the fact that the new owner had a very different lifestyle. The prior owners had used [the property] differently. This was a larger family, with younger children, that was more active. They wanted a pool, a cutting garden, bees and horses—to flush it out and

take advantage of all the space. Our charge was to figure out how to do that.” Working with Shane Griffin, the project landscape architect, Smearman first inventoried the property, evaluating the relative health of trees and shrubs. They found, due to age and periodic flooding, that a water oak allée down the length of the driveway was in a state of disrepair. Likewise, a 400-foot hedge on one side of the property was past its prime and needed to go. “We had to make some tough calls,” he says. “Though our mission was to preserve and protect, the first thing we had to do was remove two prominent elements. Now there’s a tea olive hedge, and the water oak allée has been replaced with yarwood sycamore. It’s a better choice because the lone tree in the paddock is a sycamore and we knew [the species] would tolerate the conditions.” Since taking on the project five years ago, Smearman and Griffin have carefully guided its evolution. Ever mindful of the home’s original plantation style, they keep balance as a forethought. When Norman Askins designed a dining conservatory on the left side of the house, for instance, the landscape architects balanced it with an impressive cutting garden on the right. And preservation has been practiced at every opportunity; the requested pool, for example, was designed so as not to disturb a huge sugar maple. From tidying up the motor court with perimeter plantings to adding raised beds, an apple orchard and peripheral woodland plantings, the Planters team addressed every nook and cranny. Even the outbuildings have been repurposed, as a playhouse and chicken coop, and the desired bee program is well underway. “They’ve turned it more into a working farm,” says Smearman. The legacy continues. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK

A private home on West Wesley Road was the site of the 2011 Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, which featured the handiwork of more than 30 designers and local craftsmen. Celebrated designer Barry Dixon of Warrenton, Virginia, added a fresh perspective to our local design vernacular, as well as an abundance of inspiration for visitors to the house. Classicist architectural designer William T. Baker crafted the residence, called “Lotus House,” for an Indian American family who took residence there at the conclusion of the tour.

Designer Melanie Turner created a sitting area at one end of the dining room. Starburst accessories above the furniture add dimension to the space.

LIFE

INTERVIEW BY

MARCIA SHERRILL

Cortney Novogratz Following a successful run on Bravo TV’s Nine by Design, the successful designer—and Georgia native—is now HGTV’s newest style star WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU TO DELVE INTO DESIGN? DOWN SOUTH, OUR MAMAS OFTEN INSPIRE US. DID YOURS? My mother gave me the freedom—and a push—to dec-

orate my bedroom when I was young, and I loved the experience. After that, I was ready to do more, and ultimately, it is what defined what I wanted to do as an adult. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE? WOULD YOU SELL IT UNDER ANY CONDITION? I AM NOT INCLUDING CHILDREN. My husband, Robert, and I have a gorgeous mirror in our country house. It’s plaster with two women on it; they don’t make things like that anymore! I would never sell it, but on the other hand, I also try to ‘never say never’ on pretty much everything because you never know! YOU, YOUR HUSBAND AND TROUPE OF SEVEN KIDS

RECENT INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECTS BY CORTNEY AND ROBERT NOVOGRATZ INCLUDE A LOFT-STYLE LIVING ROOM THAT OPENS TO THE OUTDOORS, A DINING ROOM WITH A VIEW AND A COLORFUL RECREATION ROOM.

ARE NOW AMERICA’S MOST FAMOUS DESIGNING FAMILY. DOES THAT ADD OR TAKE

Robert and I never went to design school, so we design with our guts and naturally make mistakes. That is how you get better or challenge yourself. We’re not afraid and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We simply love what we do and are always up for a new project, a new experience, a new challenge.

AWAY ANY PRESSURE? YOU AND ROBERT ARE SO LOW-KEY.

WE KNOW IT ISN’T EASY RAISING SUCH A LARGE FAMILY IN NEW YORK. HOW DO YOU

I actually love it, though that doesn’t mean that there aren’t difficult days. Somehow, we manage to juggle it all and it works. We have help, for sure! It is life the way Robert and I wanted to live it. Robert helps me by always making light of a stressful situation, and I do take time for myself. A glass of wine really helps!

STAY SANE? DO YOU MAKE CALM TIME FOR YOURSELF?

CHILDREN AND DESIGN DON’T ALWAYS SEEM TO OVERLAP. ANY ADVICE FOR PARENTS,

Children do like design if you expose them to it. They love—and often have an opinion about—color, texture and more. Many moms would be surprised to learn that, after having kids, not everything needs to be plastic! We should strive to remain hip, cool, calm and alive, even after becoming a parent! Don’t just throw in the towel from a design point of view; get better with a fuller life and lots of style. SINCE YOU MUST NEVER SLEEP, YOU MUST BE ON TO SOME NEW AND EXCITING PROJECT. We are currently designing a larger hotel in New Jersey, working on a new book and adjusting to the teenage years. Fingers crossed! BESIDES TO RUN AND HIDE?
