stEVE PENLEY
B
est known for his paintings of historical icons, Atlanta’s Steve Penley has become one of America’s most popular artists. His development as an artist has culminated with a unique style of bold color, strong brush strokes and vivid imagery. Although his subject matter is always familiar, Steve’s unique ability lies in his reinterpretation, creating a new experience for the viewer. Freedom is at the core of Steve Penley’s art. He plays upon the notion anything is possible, and in his world it is. He doesn’t rely on trickery in his art, but rather earns your trust, and he is more than happy to meet you halfway. His subjects are inviting, yet complex. In Steve Penley’s world, the heroes that shaped our lives are celebrated. In Steve Penley’s world, hope is honored, and cynicism is washed away. Steve is on a mission to restore morality in art. With his talent, his vision, and his faith, this is what he will continue to do. A vast collection of Steve’s work is currently being celebrated in his solo show at The New World Of Coca-Cola Museum, and will remain on display in the Pop Culture Gallery through May 2009. At any time, one can see new pieces, or browse his body of work at Linstrum + Matre Artworks on Bennett Street. Collectors, individuals and corporations, include Faith Hill, US Senator Zell Miller, Ferrol Sams, Coca-Cola, King & Spalding, Rathbun’s and Kilpatrick Stockton, among many others. Steve’s newest book will be available in November, Reconstruction Of America, published by Mercer University Press. It features Penley’s iconic images that celebrate America and the principles on which our country stands. The book includes a foreword by Fox News anchor Neal Cavuto. Steve is also collaborating with Vince Dooley, the legendary former University of Georgia football coach, on a book that chronicles the history of Georgia football. Linstrum + Matre Artworks will be hosting book signings and exhibitions for both books upon their releases in Fall 2008; advance copies may be purchased at the gallery, or online at LMArtworks.com. 4

by Toni Thomas hen asked to put together a story about Phusion, I welcomed the opportunity to sit down w/Andrea Nalls, the artistic director and co-founder (with husband, John Nalls). After all, Phusion Performing Arts School is taking the Atlanta area by quiet storm. With a little less than eighty students and a Company of young students that rivals the best, Phusion is making more than a footprint within the performing arts community. Step inside the doors of Phusion and you immediately sense the difference. Take the time to observe a class and you can see the difference. There is more than the typical “follow the leader” type of teaching going on here. Instructors are busy educating students about appropriate technique that should be displayed and students are hungrily engaged; eating up every word, direction, and correction. Outside the classroom there is almost as much activity going on with Phusion parents steadily involved in a variety of volunteer services to support the school. Take another step back in to the community and you can find Phusion performing across the Atlanta area, almost monthly, at events such as Hosea Feed the Hungry, NAACP Image Awards Gala and Celebration of Living Gala, hosted by the Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute. With all this in mind, my goal was to understand the impetus behind Andrea’s vision and dream of building a performing arts school that served the community. We sat down one late Sunday evening and after posing the question, I merely had to listen as Andrea passionately talked about how it all began. She starts in a soft whisper, barely audible, as she tries to hold back the tears. “Most people don’t know that it was really hard for me to do this.” You see, Andrea’s vision for “Phusion” actually is an extension of the same vision that her beloved mentor/teacher/fatherfigure/friend, Gary Harrison, had when he was teaching; he has since passed away. Gary’s dream was to reach out and provide the non-traditional dancer (those of different ethnicities, sizes, and shapes) the opportunity to dance. Andrea’s eyes continue to tear as she recounts the story about

her own experiences dancing with his company, the Harrison Dance Company. “Gary supported me and encouraged me in those early years before I was able to do anything technically correct. He believed I could do whatever I put my mind to. Gary was willing to pour in to me (and in to all of his students) time, commitment, and all of the knowledge he had acquired throughout his own dance years.” Andrea believes that God, through Gary, got her to where she needed to be as a dancer. After ten years with the company, Andrea learned that Gary was ill and that he would not recover. She distinctly remembers God putting it in her heart the need to complete what Gary had initiated—reaching out to help those children who are sometimes forgotten, only because they did not fit the prescribed shape or have the “right look” of a dancer. However, at that time, Andrea did not feel she was strong enough to take on such an endeavor. And once her good friend had passed away, Andrea’s will for dance died with him. She withdrew from anything and everything having to do with dance. For ten years she turned her back on the dance world. Then, about 5 years ago, Andrea decided to take a leap of faith and begin to walk within the steps she believed God had ordered. She and John decided upon the name “Phusion Performing Arts Alliance” because it seemed the most appropriate representation of Andrea’s vision. “Phusion” grew out of the want to fuse students, parents, the community, mentors, and the instructors; “Performing Arts” evoked the need for students to be well-rounded, embracing all of the performing arts; and “Alliance” strongly suggested the building of safe and secure bonds between the school and its students. With the name in place, Andrea opened the doors of Phusion Performing Arts Alliance with three students: Bryanna Brown, Niya Johnson, and Shalay Johnson. Within several months she gained a fourth student, Stephanie Derrick, and the small school began to take shape. Unlike other performing arts centers where students were allowed to take whatever classes they deemed were fun, Phusion was (and still is) interested in technically training students. In addition, Andrea wanted to build a school where the foundation of the dance program was built upon a strong understanding of ballet; each student is required to take at least one ballet course (more if they want to venture on to pointe). And guess what? They are still having fun, because for the first time the students are learning how to fully express the inner gift that God has planted within them; they are given the chance to succeed with proper guidance and support. Before long, word got out about the tremendous opportunity for those students who might not necessarily get in to the more traditional ballet schools. And boy did they come—from DeKalb, Gwinnett, Fulton and Clayton Counties. Still, Andrea feared stepping out to fully embrace the dream/vision that had been passed down to her. For four years she continued to stay under the radar, knowing that if people really saw what this then-tiny school could do, more would be expected of her. Was she really ready for this? Could she step in to Gary’s shoes? Maybe not, but then she did not have to; Andrea simply needed to walk her own path. So, as Phusion grew, and her support network grew, she finally decided to “let go and let God” do with her (and Phusion), all He was trying to do. After all, she felt strongly that God’s hand was in this endeavor. “What I have come to learn is that there is no more fear; it is just a matter of execution now, and staying the course”. And what would she tell the parents about their children who attend the school? Simply stated, “Let the kids dance from the heart.” 8
25 SEASOnS OF OPERA In ATLAnTA
CAPITOL CITy OPERA COMPAny
C
elebrating their 25th season, Capitol City Opera Company begins the 2008/2009 season with a double header— Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Mozart’s The Impresario performing together from September 12th to the 14th. From March 13th to the 15th of 2009, they will present Verdi’s La Traviata. All three operas will be performed at Conant Performing Arts Center which is on the campus of Oglethorpe University. A free education lecture about the opera is presented one hour before each performance. Under the new artistic leadership of Michael Nutter, the 2008/2009 opera season should be no less than outstanding for Capitol City Opera Company. Michael made his CCOC debut in 1998, directing the Ned Rorem one-act opera, The Tree Sisters Who Are Not Sisters. Since then, he has helped take the company to a new level that has resulted in forming relationships with the Gwinnett Community Symphony Orchestra and Oglethorpe University. Michael brings extensive experience to the company and has great visions for its future saying, “Out of college I was very lucky to get work in producing opera. I was fortunate to work in several opera companies, including Atlanta Opera on the staff and learn from a varied many people. I think it is very good that Atlanta has a company that can produce such grand opera at a very high scale. What we need to focus on is the opera artists of the future. Where shall they learn? I want to be a part of that and give back to young and upcoming artists what has been given to me.” In a recent review the Classical Music Critic for the AJC wrote, “For its artistic aims and tiny budget, Capitol City achieves more satisfying results than many larger groups in town.” In addition to the main stage performances, artists from the company perform a monthly restaurant series (Dinner and a Diva) at two local restaurants, Petite Auberge and Table 1280. Originally, the opera company was formed by Donna Angel in 1983 to allow local classically trained Atlantans an opportunity to perform complete opera roles. Throughout the 25 years, Donna has struggled to keep the company performing through many sacrifices of her own and generous donations of time and money from the Atlanta community. Although the company is still growing financially today, Capitol City Opera continues to give opportunities to over 60 singers each year and performs for approximately 40,000 people through their various programs. Holding true to the belief that arts education is paramount in our society, CCOC has one of the most extensive education departments of any performing arts group in the Southeastern U.S. Each year, CCOC brings costumed operas to children. The various shows, such as Green Eggs & Ham and Hansel and Gretel, are performed up to 200 times each year at schools, community centers, and special event centers. Congratulations Capitol City Opera Company for a great 25 years! 10

by Jennifer Dwyer have a passion for Black Theatre and African American culture. I came up in the 60’s and that time was about taking care of family, being family and being one. Which is why when Kenny’s mission statement included that idea, I wanted to be a part of that”, Lisa Watson could not be more succinct about her personal artistic motivation. She continues, “To preserve what we are and who we are as a people is a wonderful thing. Being involved with a theatre whose mission lined up with my views brought the passion back into theatre for me.” To work with Lisa Watson, as many in this city know, is to work with the Trojan horse. With a cool demeanor and calm collection of herself things get done. And not just done but done right which brings some of the most empowering and inspiring art to stage right here in our own backyard. Over the years, Watson has garnered the respect in the industry and those who have worked with her trust her judgment. “It’s her sharp perceptiveness of people, in a business that demands all and promises nothing,” offers actor/director Eugene Lee, “Lisa has taken in young artists and allowed them to stay in her home, room and board included, with the caveat that they get a job and save enough money to pay first and last month rent and utilities before they move. She really does practice what she believes.” An Atlanta native, Watson received her undergraduate degree from Clark Atlanta University and went on to pursue graduate studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in Scenic Design. During her stint in NY she work with many Broadway and off-Broadway productions including The Negro Ensemble Company, New Federal Theatre, Crossroads, Dianne McIntrye, The Apollo, and The Billie Holiday Theatre. Her job titles ranged from stage manager to carpenter to scenic designer. Returning to Atlanta, she joined Jomandi Productions as Production Manager, a position she held for 10 years and she has taught at Stage Craft and Theatre Arts Management at Clark Atlanta University. In 2003, after taking a small sabbatical in a bookstore, Lisa began her tenure as Production Manager at True Colors. Atlanta has been happy to have her back and the upcoming years should produce some of her greatest productions, yet.

American voice unadulterated and unapologetically in a way no one ever has,” said Gash. After Radio Golf, Gash will direct James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods at Carnegie Mellon, his alma mater. “Sondheim is the most exciting musical theatre composer and lyricist around, and audiences have really caught up to the emotional expression and intellectual rigor that his work entails.” In the spring, Gash will return to the Alliance to direct Quiara Hudes’ 26 Miles. Gash directed Hudes’ Pulitzer Prize-nominated Elliot, a Soldier’s Fugue in 2006. Since then, in the spring of 2008, Hudes’ musical In the Heights won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. She approached Kent about directing the World Premiere of her new play, and the opportunity to premiere the work of this rising star and moving storyteller was too good to pass up. “Hudes gives a powerful voice to Latino characters. Her work encompasses what it is to be of another culture and American at the same time,” said Gash, who is excited about these three powerful writers and their works. “They are doing things in ways and voices that we have never really heard before. These three writers don’t let their audiences off the hook or their characters for that matter. It’s not just about pure comfort or rewarding the status quo.”

itty Anderson, of Sandy Springs passed away Thursday, August 14, after living a full and wonderful life. Kitty was born and grew up in Hastings, England. During World War II, she was a British civilian attached to the American Army and became the Administrator of the General’s Section of the large American headquarters that supplied the D-Day invasion. She was the only British civilian allowed access to the War Room where major D-Day planning was being conducted. After D-Day she went with the headquarters to France and later Germany with the Army of Occupation. There she married a U. S. Army Captain and came to the United States in 1948. After arriving in Atlanta and having her daughter, Kitty worked as a legal secretary for Kilpatrick, Cody. In 1955 she started Alpha Printing and Mailing, which she ran for over 35 years before merging with AADCO Printing and Mailing where she continued as a Vice President. She has been actively involved in the cultural life of Atlanta for over 50 years, donated time and services to many of Atlanta’s art endeavors. She was an avid theater person, acting in productions of Theatre Atlanta and Drama Tech. She was active in the Atlanta Civic Theater, and its merger to create Theatre Atlanta in the late 50’s. She joined the Alliance Theatre Board in 1972 and became a Life Member in 1984. She loved opera and was an honorary member of the Atlanta Opera Board. She has also been a member and served as President of the Pro-Mozart Society and an active member of the English Speaking Union, running the Atlanta event of their National Shakespeare competition. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. She is predeceased by her sister Sybil Perkins and daughter Jane Blakely, and survived by her son-in-law Jim Blakely and two grandchildren, Daniel and Linda Blakely, all of Atlanta. n an unprecedented move in the region’s fine arts industry, Aliya Linstrum Gallery and Matre Gallery join forces and launch Linstrum + Matre Artworks. Carl Linstrum, owner of Aliya Linstrum Gallery, a vital part of the Atlanta art scene since 1992, has been dedicated to exhibiting the finest work by emerging and nationally recognized artists in all media and genres. Rob Matre, owner of Matre Gallery since 1995, exhibited a diverse assortment of contemporary paintings by local and national artists, including Atlanta’s own Steve Penley, one of the region’s most celebrated artists. Now these two owners and artists, after several years of individual success, partner in the new venture Linstrum + Matre Artworks. Together Rob and Carl represent nearly thirty years of gallery ownership in Atlanta and the merger brings together over thirty-five of the country’s top artists. “We both felt that the next step in our careers and businesses would be a significant one, and after many months of discussions it became clear that the merging of our two galleries was the perfect idea”, explains Linstrum. “We are excited about coming together to leverage our experiences, our successes and our contacts to grow Linstrum + Matre Artworks together.” Linstrum + Matre Artworks’ long-range plans include innovative programming and an expansion on the gallery model to include special events, education, and services and inventory for the new collector, as well as the seasoned one. “Carl and I have worked together for several years and have a great deal of trust in each others’ capabilities, strengths and relationships in the field,” Matre says. “We are thrilled about the fusion of clients, artists and business practices.” Linstrum + Matre Artworks opened in July at 65 Bennett Street and will host a reception for its Grand Opening exhibition on Friday, September 12. The opening exhibit features new works from three artists; one from the Aliya Linstrum roster (Duy Huynh), one from the Matre roster (Jonathan Fenske), and one who is newly represented by Linstrum + Matre Artworks (Cara Ober). All are welcomed at the reception for the Grand Opening exhibition in the space on Bennett Street. To learn more about Linstrum + Matre Artworks, please visit the gallery website at LMartworks.com.

Georgia Shakespeare presents SOPHOCLES’
>* ?$5 Adapted and directed by Richard Garner Original music by Kendall Simpson
OCTOBER 9 – NOVEMBER 2
In this new musical adaptation of Sophocles’ Greek classic, the story of Antigone comes to life as never before. As one of the surviving children of the ill-fated Oedipus, Antigone must now stand against Creon, the newly named king of Thebes, in order to stay true to her beliefs. In this timeless tale of one of literature’s most compelling heroines, one thing remains clear…truth never dies. ASK ABOUT STUDENT AND GROUP DISCOUNTS.
