A LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Grace C. Stanislaus NBAF is a national treasure! This is a bold assertion that I made at our recent gala. And I claim that statement wholeheartedly not simply because it was proclaimed by the United States Congress in 2008 but because for over 28 years NBAF has advanced the arts, celebrated the achievements of people of African descent in all disciplines; nurtured talent in our children; educated, enriched and entertained us by turning a historical spotlight on the extraordinary contributions of visual artists, playwrights, actors, authors, scholars, filmmakers, musicians, producers, multimedia artists, dancers and choreographers that have paved the way, opened closed doors, aimed for and achieved excellence.  Why is NBAF and our work important? The answer is that we recognize and support the power of the arts to heal, to be a salve to our souls and especially the souls of our children as we grapple with and struggle to heal from the ongoing and seemingly endless violence in the world. And also because we recognize that hidden artistic talent must be brought out, nurtured and supported even as the lack of access to arts education in our public schools stifle the creativity of our children and youth. We launched our Adopt-A-School Program - Move/Dance! project in the Sylvan Hills Middle School to continue to be relevant to the needs of our local communities. For over two decades, NBAF has presented, advanced and celebrated the contributions and achievements of our emerging, rising and established artists and spotlighted the stories of the challenges and triumphs of hard fought and hard worn battles to achieve excellence in all disciplines of the arts. This year our Spotlight Series is focused on theater. We launched the season by honoring two trailblazers of American theater: Kenny Leon of True Colors Theatre and Lou Bellamy, founder and co-artistic director of the Penumbra Theatre Company based in Minnesota and celebrating it’s 40th anniversary this year. They have paved the way, set the standard for excellence and become examples to this and future generations of how talent, coupled with hard work, persistence and passion can bear such extraordinary fruit. Thank you to the NBAF Board of Directors, all of our stakeholders, patrons, volunteers, funders, friends of NBAF who for over two decades have supported, nurtured, stewarded and appreciated what NBAF has been to the city of Atlanta, Georgia and to the nation. Continue to believe in our mission, potential and promise for the future as we plan the celebration of our milestone 30th anniversary in 2018! Continue to support us we advance into our third decade of presenting stellar programs, and as we launch new initiatives like our NextGenArtists program and as we continue to support local talent and to bring world talent to Atlanta. Grace C. Stanislaus Executive Director

PERFORMANCE “GOREÉ CROSSING: A Staged Reading” A play written and directed by Paul Carter Harrison Sunday, September 18, 2016, 3:00 p.m. Tickets: $20/Students free www.nbaf.org

Paul Carter Harrison

Goodrich C. White Hall, Emory University, Room 208 301 Dowman Drive Atlanta, GA 30322

Chap Clayborn, a smug, socially alienated, high-stepping Music Hall Coon-Song-Singing-Vaudevillian from New York finds himself stranded in Goreé Crossing. He soon discovers that Goreé Crossing and the characters who inhabit it have their own rhythm and sense of purpose despite the danger of racial oppression. He responds by conjuring up a Chorus of Dance Hall Girls who are actually the transfiguration of the local Church Sisters. The play offers Gospel, Blues, military and funeral marching bands, ragtime and music hall, which all connect to a common source in the Black Church.

Written and directed by Emory University scholar/artist–in-resident, playwright, director and author, Paul Carter Harrison and with an original score by Olu Dara, Goreé Crossing is set in 1918 in the deep South at the end of Minstrelsy and World War 1. Goreé Island in the bay of Dakar, Senegal is the place where Africans were forcibly detained in dungeons prior to being packed into ships during the 19th century slave trade. Goreé Crossing acts as a symbolic crossroads where Africa, the deep South, and the high-life of the urban world psychically entwine.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM ON THE HORIZON NextGenArtists Program and Showcase NBAF’s NextGenArtists program is a new signature program that NBAF plans to launch in 2016 with the aim of nurturing the creativity and supporting the talent and professional development of emerging artists of African descent as a core value of NBAF’s mission. The target participants are high school students, primarily juniors and seniors. NBAF will provide the selected students a structured program of workshops, lectures, apprenticeships, mentoring, competitive scholarships, business and professional development workshops/ classes — transformational experiences that recognize, nurture and feature their unique talent in all creative disciplines and industries, including the performing arts, theater, literary and visual arts, film, multimedia, digital media, fashion, etc.

Through the NextGenArtists program students will learn to present, market, promote and potentially sell their work during the Showcases. The participants will attend an intensive “boot camp” during which they will learn to strengthen their craft, their presentation, writing and communication skills. They will be given access to knowledge, information and the tools to learn about and to advance in the industry. NBAF provides the bridge that crosses the students into the next stage of their development, leading potentially to acceptance into a specialized school or program at a college and university and to access to jobs in the industry. Threaded together our Move/Dance! project and NextGenArtists program offers a path forward from middle school to high school to college through programs that sparks, supports and nurtures the creative aspirations of our youth, especially those in underserved communities and that are living in challenging financial circumstances.

SPOTLIGHT SERIES Visual Arts Program

ON THE HORIZON Fine Art of Collecting Series The Fine Art of Collecting Series is a year round program currently in development that focuses on education, exposure and access to visual art and artists whether in the artist’s studio or in local collections, museums and galleries. The series offers opportunities to spotlight collectors and special public and private collections through behind the scenes tours and opportunities to educate and nurture new collectors via gallery talks, lectures, panel presentations and to engage artists and their work through open artist’s studio tours and talks. Art experts, artists, collectors, curators and

wealth managers will be engaged to provide access to knowledge, expertise and information with the goal of deepening appreciation about the financial and aesthetic value of art and about the creative process, art-making, acquisition and the practical aspects of the care, preservation and maintenance of objects of art. The broad aim of the Series is to nurture the collector’s impulse while supporting local artists through access and exposure to their work with the goal of cultivating a new generation of collectors who value and appreciate visual art and artists. The effect is that the program supports artists, catalyzes the art scene and, in general, engages the visual arts community in Atlanta.

I WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. I THANK GOD FOR GRADY. There’s no way you can ever be ready to hear the words you have breast cancer. But right away, the whole team at Grady came together and started planning how we were going to go about treating my cancer. The oncologist, the surgeon, everyone walked me through my options. I’ll admit I was scared. But the team at Grady held my hand. They said we’re here. We’re going to take care of you. And they did.
