A LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Vikki Millender-Morrow NBAF has been part of the rich fabric of Atlanta’s cultural experience for 29 years, providing programs and experiences to EDUCATE, ENRICH and ENTERTAIN generations of art lovers. NBAF started as a summer festival that drew thousands of artists, Atlantans and visitors to our beautiful city to celebrate artists of African descent and the richness of their art. It was always one of the most enjoyable experiences of the summer season. Through the years, we have also worked to develop the next generation of artists by delivering art education programs in our public schools— our Move/Dance! and NextGen Artist programs. The National Endowment for the Arts has confirmed that at-risk students who have access to the arts tend to have better academic results, better workforce opportunities, and more civic engagement. Move/Dance! addresses the whole child—supporting, expanding and improving each one’s creativity, talent, knowledge, academics and health. We encourage the aspirations of students while supporting the schools’ academic goals. The new NextGen Artist program will affirm what national studies have proven, that nurturing creativity through access to the arts, art experiences and hands-on art-making is the pathway to unlocking our full human potential, an opportunity that may well be missed by youth who live in underserved communities. As the new leader of NBAF, I am thrilled to follow the many inspiring leaders and board members who have built this wonderful organization over the years. NBAF will continue presenting to our audiences the beauty of our very rich and varied culture, expressed through the work of VISUAL ARTISTS, FILMMAKERS, ACTORS, MUSICIANS and DANCERS. What also endures is our commitment to inspire our youth and the next generation of artists. As we anticipate our 30th anniversary in 2018, this year’s theme—World Music—is so appropriate, echoing our very first outdoor festival. We begin our 2017 Season with an outdoor festival on Auburn Avenue on September 23, celebrating the richness of African music and dance. We continue at Emory on September 26 with a film screening of the Pan-African Film Festival 1969, followed by a panel discussion to reflect on how this event influenced festivals like the NBAF. We end the week in Castleberry Hill on September 30 at the ZuCot Gallery, one of our city’s newest African American owned and operated art galleries, by showcasing many African American visual artists while listening to young musicians play music of various genres. Beginning the week with the past and ending with a focus on the future……as we should. October 24-25 will see another film screening at Emory—One Voice featuring Douglas Turner Ward and on November 5, we conclude our season with a panel presentation on the Social, Political Resistance and Healing: The Power of Music at the First Congregational Church. We hope you will celebrate with us this fall and join us throughout 2018 as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary and bring back the Artists Market at an outdoor festival on July 7th and 8th at Piedmont Park! One can refer back to the time period of African enslavement and slavery in the New World, during the Civil Rights and Anti-Apartheid Movements, up to the present as evidence of the power of music.
Dr Rev. Dwight Andrews
He also served as the Resident Music Director (1979-1986) at the Yale Repertory Theater under Lloyd Richards. It was during this period that his fruitful association with playwright August Wilson began. As a result, Andrews served as music director for the Broadway Productions of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Fences, The Piano Lesson, and Seven Guitars. He also served as Music Director for the Broadway revival production of Ma Rainey starring Charles S. Dutton and Whoopi Goldberg and collaborated with Director Kenny Leon on the Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun, starring Sean Combs and Phylicia Rashad. His work has been presented at professional theatres throughout the United States and Great Britain.
Dwight Andrews, composer, musician, educator, and minister, joined the Emory College faculty in 1987. A native of Detroit, Dr. Andrews is Professor of Music Theory and African American Music at Emory University and Senior Minister of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Atlanta. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music from the University of Michigan. He continued his studies at Yale University, receiving a Master of Divinity degree and a Ph.D. in Music Theory.

MOVE/DANCE! PROGRAM 2015-16 & 2016-17 Scholarship Winners and Announcement
The Move/Dance! Program was established by the National Black Arts Festival as part of its new Adopt-A-School arts education initiative. It brings much-needed arts education and physical education back into local Atlanta middle schools. The program encourages and nurtures the talent and the aspirations of middle school students while supporting the school, parents, and guardians with their academic as well as their health and wellness goals. As an interventionist project the Move/Dance! Program marries the creative arts with the goal of addressing prevalent health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and other conditions that plague our communities, with fun dance lessons that support movement and exercise. The classroom experience is augmented with journal writing and research about the rich history of Black dance and about the dancers, choreographers and dance companies that have paved the way. The program also encourages the students to improve their communication and presentation skills in preparation for the public dance performance. The program also includes a “Create a New Dance” competition, scholarships and financial literacy and educational enrichment workshops that teach participants how to save, invest and grow their future In 2017, the pilot year of the Adopt-A-School arts education initiative, NBAF “adopted” and partnered with APS middle schools because of its focus education through its Connections Programs. APS middle schools also have a demographic that is well served by the program goals which provides participating students with the resources they need to aspire and to excel. To date, over 400 middle school children have participated in the Move/Dance! Program. It is a successful program because it focuses on addressing the needs of the whole child— on supporting, nurturing, expanding and improving their creativity, talent, knowledge, academics and health.

2017 NBAF GALA The NBAF Gala celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. It is revered as the premier event of the summer social season. The first benefit gala was the inspiration of Michael Lomax and Pam Hoffman. Their idea was to create a dynamic event that would bring together diverse audiences that through NBAF the arts would continue to make a difference in the lives of the many individuals that we serve. The hallmarks of the annual gala are lively entertainment and great performances, a silent auction of unique items presented in a spectacular venue where hundreds of our supporters and fun-loving patrons come together to celebrate and to sustain NBAF’s operations, programs and rich cultural legacy.
