THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER GLASS Sculptor
Hans Godo Fräbel
N
ans Godo Fräbel is one of the first American flameworkers to have been part of a major art movement. In the early seventies, he produced sculptures in the pop aesthetic that set him apart from the other glass artists at this time. Fräbel was born in Jena, East Germany in 1941 and moved in 1965 to Atlanta, where he opened up his own glass art studio in 1968. Long regarded as one of the most influential flameworkers in America, Fräbel has been an important part of the evolution of flameworking as a recognized and respected art medium. His work can be found in museums all over the world. Fräbel’s work is most easily characterized by its flawless quality and unique design. Long known for his “pop-art” approach, Fräbel is famous for sculptures that depict ordinary things in a manner that makes them extraordinary, such as the “Hammer and Nails” sculpture, which has been traveling museums around the world since 1979. In 2004, he started exhibitions at Botanical Gardens, which displays life-like floral and animal life forms. The exhibition was later expanded with larger sculptures, such as the “Cavorting Clown Fountain” (over 10 feet in height) and the 15 ft. tall “Cube with Imploded Spheres”, and this exhibition continues to break visitation records wherever it goes. THe ANIMAlS DANCe For JoN lUDWIG IN “rAINForeST ADVeNTUreS” uppets on pointe? Not exactly, By Holley Calmes but the colorful creatures who inhabit the Center for Puppetry Arts’ “Rainforest Adventures” are dancing just the same. This new production directed by Jon Ludwig tells the story of 24 hours in a rainforest, where more than 30 creatures slither, fly, fight, and flirt. As in a dance performance, their story is told not with words but through movement. “The story is so simple, and the themes are universal: the struggle to survive, breed and protect the young,” explains Ludwig. “The statement we are making is simply ‘How beautiful these animals are!’” “Rainforest Adventures” was originally created for Fernbank Science Center. Ludwig and his fellow writers, Stephanie Kaskel Bogle and Raylynn Hughes, picked a variety of creatures from this first production and built moments of tension and humor around them. Composer John Cerreta then created a score.

In telling the “Rainforest” story, Ludwig’s approach is to utilize each animal’s natural movements in building a scene, much as a choreographer would approach constructing a ballet. “Everything in the show is precisely choreographed to a beat,” Ludwig continues. “We call the bat sequence the ‘Bat Ballet.’ I like this sequence because it seems absolutely chaotic at moments, and then all the bats are in sync. A controlled chaos.” The puppets were designed to move in ways similar to the animals they represent, and many scenes are all about a specific animal’s motion. “For example, the Cock of the Rocks dance was based on the frenetic movements of actual bird mating dances,” Ludwig says. “In ‘Rainforest,’ these movements are translated into a dance, a ‘sock hop’ where two male birds try to impress one female.” Ludwig shares his inspiration for “Rainforest,” saying, “In creating this piece, we always thought of how we go to the zoo and anything the animals do is fascinating to us. In puppetry, the language is closer to dance than theater. The puppets would rather dance than talk. Besides just laying on the floor, dancing or moving is what they do best. tlanta Ballet and the Program in Dance at Kennesaw State University have formed an educational partnership. The collaboration enables Atlanta Ballet company members and Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education students to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in dance at KSU. Undergraduate KSU dance students receive special discounts and concessions to Atlanta Ballet performances, classes and events. Advanced level KSU students can audition for supernumerary roles with Atlanta Ballet to gain professional performance experience. Atlanta Ballet also provides internships for KSU dance majors. The collaboration originated after Atlanta Ballet artistic director John McFall attended a KSU dance concert a year ago. Impressed with what he saw, he proposed that the college and company begin working together. The timing was perfect—KSU had just implemented the bachelor’s degree in dance a month earlier. Already, KSU dancers are benefiting from the new partnership. “It’s such a great opportunity for us,” says KSU dance major A.J. Paug, who was a supernumerary in Atlanta Ballet’s “Don Quixote.” “I was thrilled to be able to perform. I was able to watch the dancers perform and watch how everything worked from the best seats in the house. It was an amazing honor.” Atlanta Ballet dancer John Welker, who is now in his second semester as a student in the Program in Dance at KSU, is pleased that he can get a college education while maintaining his busy professional schedule. “The one discovery that surprised me the most was the level of commitment from KSU dancers,” he says. “They have such a contagious intensity. Everyone is encouraging and cares for one another.” “This partnership gives us regional and national recognition through our affiliation with one of the premier ballet companies in the nation,” says Pulinkala, director the KSU Program in Dance, “and Atlanta Ballet is able to diversify the experience of their dancers by offering them the opportunity to pursue a college degree in dance.” For more information about the collaboration, click the Atlanta Ballet link at www.kennesaw.edu/theatre/dance. 10

the National Black Arts Festival’s (NBAF) 22 years of presenting dance we have watched the history of the form unfold. The likes of Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Garth Fagin, Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, Dianne McIntyre, Forces of Nature, Evidence, Ballethnic, Giwayen Mata, Chuck Davis and George Faison have graced our stages and helped build an audience for black dance in the United States. Additionally, NBAF’s presentation of African, Caribbean and Latin choreographers and dance companies have illustrated the continuum of the African Diasporic experience. The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) returns to National Black Arts Festival for two performances, July 15 and July 17, 2010, in recognition of their 40th Anniversary. For 40 years, PHILADANCO has entertained audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad, providing extraordinary dance performances and brilliant works that are described as, “…Exuberant…” by The New York Times, “... electrifying: sure, fervent, [and] beautifully accomplished…” by the Miami Herald and “…nothing short of sensational” by Toronto, Canada’s Globe and Mail Newspaper. In celebration of PHILADANCO’s 40 years of excellence, notable choreographers such as Urban Bush Women’s Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Troy Powell and newcomer Camille Brown, have created new works that harness the energy and culture of funk music. Zollar’s work, By Way of the Funk, was commissioned by the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, during the tenure of NBAF’s Executive Producer/CEO, Neil Barclay. 30 YeArS oF INSPIrATIoN, INNoVATIoN AND INFlUeNCe By Julie Herron Carson
L
ooking back over the past three decades, it’s strange to think how different Atlanta’s dance landscape might be today, if not for the inspiration, guidance and constancy of Lee Harper, founder of Lee Harper & Dancers. Through her dance school and performing company, along with partnerships with organizations like the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Opera, Miss Harper has taught dance to generations of Atlantans and delighted audiences for over 30 years with her innovative choreography and captivating live performances. It all began in Atlanta in 1975 when Miss Harper was invited by Maestro Robert Shaw to choreograph the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s first production of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. The old adage says the direction of a life can turn on a dime. In this case, it turned on the point of a dance shoe as a single opportunity to choreograph grew into a life-long love affair between Miss Harper and the City of Atlanta. “Lee Harper and I have had some 30 years of collaboration, and I adore working with her each and every time,” said Jere Flint, staff conductor for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. “Whether it’s choreographing dance for audiences of young children or sophisticated adults, her imagination is golden.” Miss Harper is a native of Hickory, N.C. She attended the Juilliard School of Music and graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance. Before coming to Atlanta, she performed professionally with several companies, including the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. “It’s hard to comprehend the breadth of influence Lee has had on Atlanta’s cultural life,” said Gwenyth Dixon, former ballet mistress for the Atlanta Ballet and long-time performer and teacher with Lee Harper & Dancers. “In addition to her own endeavors, her reach extends throughout the city’s performing arts community through her various partnerships and collaborations. Even her endurance is remarkable, since she continues to teach, perform and inspire dancers and audiences with the same innovation she has shown throughout the years.” Lee Harper founded her school and dance company in 1980. A Lexus Leader of the Arts, she is the recipient of numerous honors including two Choreography Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is married to attorney Wayne Vason. They have two children, Katie and Fin. W
hen the staff and students of Gwinnett Ballet Theatre said goodbye to 14 year old Nancy Casciano last September, it was a bittersweet moment. It is sad for a student to leave. But the fact that Nancy will be studying at the School of American Ballet in New York City on full scholarship also makes a statement about the quality of training and “nurturing” that goes on at the GBT studios in Snellville, Georgia. Founded in 1977 by Lynn Snipes, the studio has provided excellent dance instruction to generations of area dancers. Lisa Sheppard Robson has been at the helm since 1997 as Artistic Director. Under her guidance, GBT has seen its students win awards, scholarships, and accolades. An Honor Company with Southeastern Regional Ballet Association, the company has launched numerous students into the ranks of prestigious dance companies. One such alumna is Alessandra Ball, a Princess Grace Award winner, now dancing as Principal with North Carolina Dance Theatre. Dance Magazine named alumna Jessica Collado, soloist at Houston Ballet, one of its “25 To Watch in 2009.” Alumni Robert Dekkers performs with ODC Dance Company in San Francisco, having also danced with Ballet Arizona. The latest student to receive honors is 14 year old Abigrace Diprima. Abigrace competed in the Junior Division of the Youth America Grand Prix in January, receiving the third place award for her contemporary solo and top twelve in her classical ballet variation. She continues to the YAGP finals in New York City this March. These young dancers, among other GBT alumni who have danced professionally, are all the product of a system which considers “nurturing” as a part of the educational approach. The annual GBT production of Nutcracker utilizes the gifts of dancers age 4 through 18. This production is accompanied by the professional Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Orchestra, conducted by New Trinity Baroque’s Predrag Gosta. Spring concerts which emphasize contemporary dance as well as classical ballet, plus the annual SERBA festival, create a balance between instruction, growth, and having fun. Kudzu Playhouse Features RENT RENT. Winner of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical, RENT established itself as a cornerstone of modern American musical theatre. GDA is located in an incredibly spacious facility which includes four separate studios, a visitors lobby, and a lounge area where students can relax or warm up before class. The teaching staff at GDA is comprised of working professionals who provide first-rate instruction in a multitude of styles ranging from classical ballet to go-go stiletto. Jazz Orchestra Atlanta Ballroom dancing to a live big band is alive and well in Atlanta! Georgia Tech’s DramaTech Theater DramaTech Theater is Georgia Tech’s student-run theater and the oldest continuously operating theater in Atlanta, est. 1947. We offer a four-show main stage season of plays and musicals; improv; variety shows; and several workshop productions. Most of our performances take place in the Dean James E. Dull Theater, attached to the Ferst Center for the Arts. General admission for all of our shows is $10.
