Try a Drop-in Adult Dance Class at Atlanta Ballet

s the official school of Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education is known as one of the top training facilities for young aspiring dancers in the U.S. Many of these students are featured in Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker and the Company’s February family ballet each year. The Centre also offers a variety of drop-in classes for adults (ages 16 and up) at its three studio locations: West Midtown, Buckhead, and Powers Ferry. There’s no contract or major commitment, so you can take a class when it fits your schedule, Monday through Saturday. There are classes for everyone — from the person trying ballet for the first time to experienced professional dancers! Classes for the spring 2016 term include introductory to advanced ballet, pointe, yoga stretch, hip-hop, African dance, tap, jazz, and modern. When your resolve to keep your new year’s resolutions starts to wane, dance classes are great ways to kick-start your

fitness routine and discover new interests. “I’ve been taking the adult (16 years and older) classes at the Powers Ferry Centre off and on for four years now. The plaza is easy to park and the studio always looks nice. I’ve taken ballet, hip-hop, jazz, and contemporary and they are all great, but I mostly stick with the Thursday night contemporary class taught by Rebekah. She is a great instructor and really knows how to modify her class for all levels. She can make anyone feel comfortable even if you are new to dance, but also can push more experienced dancers to improve as well.” — Yelp Reviewer Try a class on Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education the first of every month when it offers its free class day! Visit centre.atlantaballet.com/ adult-classes to explore the full schedule and pricing details. The Centre for Dance Education also offers student and senior discounts for all of its adult classes.

CREATIVE PROCESS:

Atlanta Native Juel D. Lane Expands His Dance Artistry to Film By Holley Calmes

A

s with many truly creative people, Juel Demetrius Lane is emerging as an artist of another type. An acclaimed dancer, teacher and 2015-2016 Alvin Ailey New Directions Foundation Choreographic Lab Fellow, Lane is taking a new direction into dance film. With five new films, some in post production, the UNCSA graduate has become passionate about sharing dance in a more lasting media. “I like making films because I believe in making visuals timeless for years to come. This also allows the eye to gage something different than a live show.” “I am working diligently on my dance films,” he says. “My plan is to have a viewing this summer. I want to show the Atlanta audiences something fresh, different, and another perspective of dance.” The films vary in type and style. “Most of my films have narratives to them. Each film is different for that specific purpose of the narrative which might require a large ensemble or solo dance. Some films are black and white and some are in color.” Music is also a variable factor. “My first film features popular music. The new films have original composed music.” Lane, one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch in 2013” seems to have fallen in love with dance on film. “I enjoy the entire craftsmanship of making films. From pre-

production to post, it’s exciting. I’m extremely hands-on. You have to be. It’s your baby! Working on films is almost like caring for a child. You have to give it love and care.” Lane plans to have a venue and premiere dates announced soon. He hopes to tour the films. This new dance-oriented love allows him a different type of “sharing.” “I am so in love with sharing these films in a theater and having a dialogue afterwards to hear people’s perspectives.” Learn more about Lane at his web site: www.jueldlane.net

GWINNETT BALLET THEATRE Presents

FRIENDS AND FAMOUS DANCES THE ASSEMBLY – Orange County, CA, Delyer Anderson and Lara Wilson, Directors

G

winnett Ballet Theatre will be offering a dance experience with a bit of a twist on March 25th and 26th at the Infinite Energy Theater in Duluth, GA. GBT dancers will be performing and, in addition, two strong young companies from outside the Atlanta area will be displaying contemporary fireworks of their own. Performances are Saturday, March 26th at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A special “Sensory Show” for audiences with autism and other sensory issues will be held on Friday, March 25th at 7:30 p.m. The production is titled “Friends and Famous Dances” for a reason. The Famous Dances portion of the show consists of “Swan Lake, Act 2” and “Pas de Quatre,” performed by Gwinnett Ballet Theatre. The “Friends” aspect arrives via Los Angeles, California and Covilhã, Portugal. Dancers from “The Assembly,” the California visitors, and from “Kayzer Ballet” of Portugal come ready to offer their original, contemporary choreography to Atlanta audiences. Both young companies connected with GBT through Wade Walthall, GBT’s Artistic Director. Delyer Anderson of The Assembly was a fellow student with Walthall at the University of Arizona where both were studying to obtain their Masters in Dance. Ricardo Runa, founder

and director of “Kayzer Ballet” came to GBT in 2013 when he arrived to perform as a guest dancer. The relationships resulted in continuing communication and encouragement for all three performing groups. Now they have an opportunity to join together in a special production. The Assembly will perform a work titled “d(IV)ided” which premiered in November 2015, and was The Assembly’s effort to bring together the diverse work of four Los Angeles/Orange County choreographers. Kayzer Ballet will present the original work “Looking for a Place to Live.” Master classes with Runa on March 22nd and with Delyer Anderson and Co-Director Lara Wilson on March 23rd at the GBT studios are open to dancers age 14 and up. Call 770-2370046 to register. Tickets to the performances on March 26th range from $20-$12. Sensory show tickets are $6. They can be purchased at www. Infiniteenergycenter.com, by calling 770-6262464, or at the Arena Box Office at Infinite Energy Center. For more information about Gwinnett Ballet Theatre, visit www.gwinnettballet.org. Alliance Theatre

Finishes Its Season with Musical Productions About Musical Icons

T

he Alliance Theatre will finish its 2015/16 season with two exciting musical productions about the lives of American music icons — Ethel, the story of Ethel Waters, on the Hertz Stage, and Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story on the Alliance Stage. Ethel is a glimpse into the magnificent and very complicated life of legendary stage and film star Ethel Waters. A versatile actress who epitomized the glamour of Black Vaudeville while successfully and lucratively crossing over into traditionally white performance venues, Waters inspired directors and singers and song writers with her talent and versatility. Waters was the first to record “Stormy Weather,” later starring in the remarkable Cabin in the Sky. Atlanta’s own Terry Burrell brings this amazing performer to life in a one woman play with music, band, and the larger-than-life wit of Ethel Waters on Hertz Stage from March 25 – April 17, 2016. Tickets and information are available at www.alliancetheatre.org/ethel

On the Alliance Stage, from Charles Randolph-Wright, director of Motown the Musical, and six-time Grammy Award-winning icon BeBe Winans comes a hilarious and heart-warming journey toward self-discovery. Detroit natives BeBe and CeCe Winans, youngest siblings of the Winans family dynasty, experience the ultimate in culture shocks when invited to join Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Praise The Lord Network television show. The Winans teenagers become not only television celebrities, they also become like adopted children of the Bakkers, integrating TV evangelism in Pineville, North Carolina. As BeBe and CeCe encounter fame, fortune, and even a young Whitney Houston, BeBe must learn to balance his desire for success with his true calling. This new American musical which includes new music by BeBe Winans, as well as BeBe and CeCe hits, runs from April 13 – May 15 and stars the next generation of Winans singers as the young BeBe and CeCe! KSU Department of Dance Celebrates 10 Years By Robert Godlewski

K

ennesaw State University’s Department of Dance is celebrating ten years of dance. Dr. Ivan Pulinkala, who founded the Kennesaw State dance program in 2005, has strategically charted its development into the largest collegiate dance program in Georgia, and a leader in undergraduate dance education in the Southeastern U.S. “KSU Dance has been built by the collaborative work of our outstanding faculty, staff and students, and with the ongoing support of our campus community, administration, and community partners,”Pulinkala said. “Our partnerships with leading arts organizations like Atlanta Ballet, the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, and the Rialto Center for the Arts, provide our students with opportunities to perform, choreograph, and teach in professional venues.” The dance program now hosts the annual KSU Dance Festival, features the largest dance studios in the metro Atlanta area, and brings in world-renown guest artists and dance companies. “The Department of Dance has a highly qualified and dedicated faculty, staff and leadership,” said Patricia S. Poulter, dean of the College of the Arts. “There is a clear, shared vision for what

kind of experiences, knowledge, and work ethic students should need to transition into the professional arena. Students are able to work with internationally known guest artists on a regular basis, perform in professional venues, and are held to a high academic standard. The program is rigorous, yet designed to meet students on their level when they enter the major, and move toward excellence in artistry, technique, historical and theoretical knowledge and professionalism.” Through a partnership with the Israeli Consulate, KSU Dance has welcomed a host of professional dance artists from Israel, home to what many believe is the leading contemporary dance scene in the world. Pulinkala is currently developing an Education Abroad program for dance majors in Israel, which will be launched in summer 2016 and include training for students with the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv. Future plans for the Department of Dance, Pulinkala said, include a state-of-theart theater for dance on the Marietta Campus, planning the launch of the first graduate M.F.A. degree in dance in Georgia, and designing the third phase of Kennesaw State’s dance facility at Chastain Pointe.

Dance of Different Dimensions By Keiko Guest

I

n the 45 years spent in the arena of dance I have watched a development of excellence that seems to have no ceiling. It is widely known that most famous dancers from the past would have slim chances with the competition they would have to face in these modern times. A time of mind boggling physicality and maneuvers that seem commonplace. It is also common knowledge that dance is crucial to other forms of performance level passions, adding meaning to the adage “the world is a stage”. Most focus of dance usually culminates in a theater, where the three dimensions of height, width and depth are used within the confines of the performance venue. Brought to the surface in these times are age-old dance forms performed in the air and on horseback, formerly seen in circuses, along with other death defying acts. As a matter of interest, our most worn dance wear is named after Jules Leotard, who was the first person to perform the flying trapeze. And, the Khans of Mongolian history were known to be acrobatic horsemen of extreme abilities.

Much is recycled through the fourth dimension of time. Case in point are the dancers of the Silver Classix Crew, who, after a hiatus of decades have found themselves dancing again. This team of 50-74 year old seasoned dancers often add energy, zest and humor to Atlanta Hawks games. Members of the crew are seen in the award winning “Silento”, best dance video of 2015 and the ABC pilot for a new reality show, “Dance Battle America”. I speculate that another dimension does exist. An intangible location within this universe where dance is performed in the cells of our bodies, expressing through muscle memory, passion, perseverance, dedication, determination and undeniable love. An incomparable example is Anna Mott, brain cancer survivor, who proves to be a dancer of the fifth dimension.
