CREATIVE PROCESS:

Atlanta Audiences can Experience an Unforgettable Weekend of Dance Expression with 2019’s Edition 0f “Off The Edge” By Holley Calmes

“O

ff the Edge” 2019 is bound to amaze Atlanta arts enthusiasts eager to encounter the new and unique in dance creativity. Four performances presented February 28th through March 2nd present intriguing dance works which are new to the area. Curated by Toronto-based Ilter Ibrahimof, ten individual companies from across the country and beyond will perform. Each evening’s events will occur in a separate venue. “With residency activities spanning three nights with four different programs, EDGE offers a smorgasbord of work by accomplished companies or choreographers rarely seen or never presented in Atlanta,” explains Leslie Gordon, Director of the Rialto Theatre at Georgia State University. “There are always surprises at EDGE,” she continues. “A big difference this year over previous EDGE festivals is that Ilter has chosen significantly longer works featuring a larger company of dancers.” “The idea of sharing the work over a wide geographic area, three different venues over three nights, allows for broader audience diversity.” February 28th’s venue is Kennesaw State University, where Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre premieres a new work by Tara Lee, plus two works by Ballet X. The performance begins at 8:00 p.m. March 1st offers two performances at the Westside Cultural Arts Center featuring companies Fly on a Wall and ImmerseATL at 7:00 p.m. and The Lucky Penny company plus Ephrat Asherie Dance at 9:00 p.m.

The production on March 2nd beginning at 7:00 p.m. includes the Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre, Kennesaw State Dance Company, Company Wayne McGregor and Ephrat Asherie Dance. The Atlanta based companies participating were chosen by Terminus’ John Welker. “They are well respected but often underthe-radar performers with significant impact on the local dance scene,” says Gordon. “Kennesaw State University Dance Company has been a partner from the beginning. Their strong professional dance training program is one of the most significant in the region.” The main aim is to give Atlanta audiences a chance to see a variety of works on a single program that inspire, astound, or maybe even annoy them — but also to offer a chance to see what’s happening in parts of the dance world that they might never get to see.”

Roswell Dance Theatre — Building a Legacy of Dance

s the curtain rises, the journey begins. From faraway Russia to the bustling streets of Paris, a beautiful young woman finds her family and finds herself in Roswell Dance Theatre’s exciting upcoming production of Anastasia. Returning to the beautiful Byers Theatre at Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center in March, Roswell Dance Theatre presents this exciting tale, with brand new choreography from Associate Director, Kassandra Taylor Newberry. Anastasia will be on stage March 23-24, 2019 and presented with Atlanta Dance Theatre’s Peter Pan. Roswell Dance Theatre, the performing company of the Tolbert-Yilmaz School of Dance, opened its 33rd season this fall with the spectacular 12-show run of Nutcracker. As the oldest and largest classic Nutcracker production in North Fulton, audiences have embraced this event for 30 years. The patron experience is outstanding based on the exceptional dance, choreography, costuming, set design, music, lighting, and state of the art venue at City Springs. How do the productions come to life? Performers from the dance company train year-round in technique and performance. The full selection of classes includes Ballet,

Tap, Jazz, Modern, Broadway Jazz, Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Contemporary, Acrobatics, Aerial Silks, Kinderdance, Hip-Hop, and Pointe. The most dedicated members have a comprehensive schedule each week inclusive of training, rehearsal, community performances and special events. Auditions for the company take place each spring for acceptance into the ballet, modern and preprofessional programs. Founder/Director, Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz, and Associate Director, Mary Lynn Taylor have shared their love of dance with thousands of dancers in North Fulton for nearly 40 years. Though the basic steps remain constant, the studio has continued to adapt and grow every season. In the fall of 2019, the school will continue to be the premiere destination for dance studies in North Fulton in a brand new facility in Roswell. The facility includes six stunning studios, an event space, physical therapy suite, private training rooms, a props and costume warehouse and more, brought together with just the right amount of dance magic. Please visit www.tysod.com for more information and programming. tlanta Ballet is excited to take part in the inaugural season of performances at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at City Springs. Situated in the heart of downtown Sandy Springs, this state-of-the-art facility boasts stunning green spaces and a large selection of on-site dining options before and after the show. The evening performances of Atlanta Ballet at City Springs, April 12 & 13 at 8pm, will include one of dance visionary Jiří Kylián’s signature celebrations of dancers’ physical limits, Return to a Strange Land. Sinewy forms entwine in intimate embraces before spiraling across the stage in graceful lifts. They are physical bodies in space detached from place and

time — travelers in a strange land. They move as counterpoints, exploring the limits of centrifugal force and, seemingly, gravity. Rising Brazilian choreographer Ricardo Amarante, recognized for his emotionally-charged, purely neoclassical style, complements the program with The Premiere, an original work commissioned by Atlanta Ballet for the 2018/2019 Season. It follows the dancers from rehearsals in the studio to opening night at the theatre, capturing the palpable energy surging through the artists as they perfect their steps for the premiere. The evening will also include a divertissement of short works — excerpts from ballet classics and works from previous seasons. On Saturday, April 13 & Sunday, April 14 at 2pm, Atlanta Ballet 2 will also take the stage to present Beauty & the Beast by choreographer Bruce Wells. Audience members of all ages will fall in love with this celebrated fairy tale all over again with a one-hour production designed for our younger audience members, children ages 12 and under. Your family will be mesmerized by this enchanting tale of adventure, unlikely friendships, and the power of true love! Visit atlantaballet.com for tickets and information.

The Realm of Movement Research at Emory University

Laura Briggs

Movement is a language that captures the connections between the realm of the body and the world.

T

herefore, movement research requires sensory awareness, innovation, collaboration, analysis, and reflection in order to build interdisciplinary connections. Abi Grassler, a senior in the college, studies neuroscience/ behavioral biology and dance. She is doing an independent research project that will determine whether certain emotions can be identified based on the region of the body where initiation occurs, or emphasis is placed, during performance. She was inspired by a study published in 2014 by Nummenmaa and colleagues. Patsy Collins, a senior in business and dance, found herself affected by the current climate of protests. She began by asking, what is a body in protest? She is in dialogue and creative exploration with a diverse group of dancers who will create a new work emphasizing how hope is represented and expressed. Helen Wang, a senior majoring in dance, began her research supported by Emory’s SIRE program. As a Han Taiwanese, she researched Taiwanese cultural identity, from the post-colonial era into the millennia, reflected the dance styles of three iconic Taiwanese modern dance choreographers. She used Laban

14

Patsy Collins

Movement Analysis (LMA) to decode each choreographer. Honors in Dance can be achieved through a designed project in history, choreography or performance. The entire senior year is devoted to the design, feedback and development of a dance major’s creative scholarship. Laura Briggs, majoring in dance and chemistry, is investigating, translating, and challenging themes of science, religion, nationalism, and romance in Kurt Vonnegut’s 1963 novel Cat’s Cradle. Demonstrated through five solos, Embodying foma, is a collaborative effort between Laura and the dancers. Serena Schmitt is double majoring in dance and anthropology/human biology. Her thesis raises questions and attempts to uncover where intimacy and awkwardness coexist in performance — between the dancers and between the dancers and the audience. She will employ various techniques to make the audience feel involved and intimate with the work while experimenting with technical elements to determine what accentuates this relationship best. All of these creative projects will be presented at Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing arts in March.

errie Ajile Axam, Founder and Artistic Director of Total Dance/Dancical Productions. Inc. nurtured the idea of creating an arts organization that enriches the quality of life through dance while pursuing degrees at Princeton University and Rutgers University in New Jersey. In 1985, upon returning to her native town, Atlanta, Georgia, Ms. Axam founded Total Dance Theatre. Initially housed in a small classroom at Atlanta’s Art Exchange, Total Dance Theatre emphasized socially significant programming. In 1989, the company moved to a storefront in southwest Atlanta and established its commitment to participation in public school programming, outdoor festivals, theatrical productions and other cultural events throughout metro Atlanta. Increased enrollment enabled relocation to a loft in downtown Atlanta from 1990-93. In 1994, Ms. Axam expanded her vision of reaching a broader base of participants by incorporating as Dancical Productions. Inc. and established the organization’s location in midtown at Atlanta’s upbeat Rio Mall. Presently, Dancical Productions.

Inc. is located at the C.T. Martin Natatorium and Recreation Center. Under the leadership of Mayor Shirley Franklin, Total Dance was invited to be a pilot program to bring quality dance arts education to this community. Through the development of classes, workshops, community-based performances, and touring programs, Dancical Productions. Inc. has become the umbrella organization for Total Dance and other performing arts educational programs serving children youth, and adults. The vision is to present the highest caliber of dance and performing arts in the community and beyond. This vision is based on the Total Dance Concept, a set of values promoting the care of each individual developing their full potential by way of the arts. Our mission is to train, produce and present TECHNICAL and CREATIVE dancers, performers and educators with a special emphasis on youth and women to promote transformation, leadership and the celebration of the African-American culture while sharing in diversity.

The Michael O’Neal Singers: Song for Everyone

he Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, is now midway through its 30th concert season. The 140-member symphonic chorus, known for its agility and variety, will partner with the Georgia Philharmonic orchestra for Blockbusters!, a concert of exciting, well-known selections from the world of classical and opera music, such as Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” from Symphony No. 9, the finale from Puccini’s Turandot, and the Triumphal Scene from Verdi’s Aida. In May, MOS collaborates with the Tyrone Jackson jazz trio to present MOS Goes to the Movies, a program composed entirely of vocal and jazz music from popular movie soundtracks. Since its inception in 1989, MOS has provided a unique opportunity to the north metro-Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. Recent concerts have included Beethoven and Bruckner masterworks, Broadway hits, favorites from the Great American songbook, opera choruses, bluegrass and gospel music, and Beatles ballads. Dr. Michael O’Neal, Founder and Artistic Director, guides the organization with his vision for attaining the highest standards of choral excellence. O’Neal’s work with Robert Shaw evoked the following from

the late Mr. Shaw: “Michael…always manages to see that the music comes first.” Committed to musical outreach, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization has produced a CD entitled MOS Remembers, and distributes this recording at no charge to those suffering Alzheimer’s disease or age-related dementia. MOS also livestreams most of its concerts in order that those who are no longer able to attend live choral performances may still experience the power and healing that choral song provides. MOS recognizes the power vocal music has to connect and heal, and so offers choral opportunities to the community at large by hosting an annual December Messiah SingAlong and a non-auditioned Summer Singers program. In addition, MOS provides opportunities at many of its concerts for the audience to become part of the musicmaking and sing along with the chorus. The full chorus now has 19 recordings to its credit, including recent releases Kaleidoscope: Colors of the Voice and Christmas Through the Ages. Visit MOS on the web at www.mosingers.com or call 770.594.7974 to learn more about these CDs, the MOS Remembers project, Summer Singers participation, and the MOS 2019 season.

Out Front Theatre Features the Story of Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf Am My Own Wife tells the story of the life of Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf, a trans woman who survived living in Berlin during both Nazi and Stasi control, collecting antique furniture for her museum. It is simultaneously the journey of playwright Doug Wright in his search to represent Charlotte in her fullest truth. This marks the first professional production with a trans/gnc performer playing all thirty-five characters as has been traditionally done only by cis male actors. Theatrical Outfit Presents Two Great DECEMBE Plays this Spring The Pitmen Painters 2/27-3/24/2019 Based on a true story, this heartfelt lesson about character over class and talent over privilege challenges the way we look at art and reveals our universal desire for a richer, more colorful existence. When a group of miners and a dentist hire a professor to teach Art Appreciation, they embark on

32

one of the most unusual experiments in art history. As the pitmen become painters, suddenly avant-garde artists become their friends, their work hangs in prestigious collections, and they are celebrated in high society. But every day, they still risk their lives down in the mine. I Love To Eat 4/10-5/5/2019 Drop into Beard’s Greenwich Village kitchen for bean-spilling anecdotes, on-air flashbacks, and a salty voyage around the world of love, life, and comfort food. Sit close and sample a taste! “In the beginning there was Beard,” said Julia Child of the first TV chef whose charisma transformed him from aspiring actor to culinary expert. A flamboyant yet introverted gastronomist, James Beard was his own greatest promoter and harshest critic. He weathered shifts in foodie culture for half a century, and the award bearing his name today is craved by chefs worldwide. For more information visit http:// theatricaloutfit.org
