Y
ou don’t know who Josh Lamkin is, and that’s just fine. Lamkin has been quietly making a name for himself as a photographer in Atlanta’s theater scene for the last several years working with the likes of Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre, Theatrical Outfit, and Horizon Theatre, among others. These days having a persona and being the center of attention are a more dominant part of American culture than they’ve ever been. Reality tv and social media make it easy for people to be a celebrity — or at least pretend they’re one. Lamkin puts it bluntly: “I don’t care about being a star. I don’t want your attention on me. If I am invisible in the process of making images, that’s how I want it. My subject is what’s important. Capturing the moment is important. Making images that move people, images with lives of their own, that’s my goal. Don’t get me wrong, I want people to respond to my photography, and I love to work. I just don’t need people to celebrate me in my work.” Lamkin’s photography work has included portraits, weddings, events, and commercial 4
projects, but the magic of the theatre has captured his imagination. “Photography can be such a solo endeavor, so the opportunity to work with all these talented people, to be some part of putting a play together is just a wonderful, unexpected addition to my photography career. I mean, it’s kind of crazy — I get to actually be on stage running around taking pictures while scenes from a play are running. It surreal to be in the middle of a play while it’s happening but being sort of invisible at the same time. Actors amaze me, just their ability to transform themselves, to lose themselves in what they’re doing. Trying to capture those moments and that kind of energy in a photograph is such a great challenge and is so fun. PLANS A SEASON OF EXPANDED HORIZONS By Holley Calmes

professional musicians from the greater Atlanta area are hired, and there are no volunteers, community members, students or amateurs included. This season’s offerings begin on December 20th at 8:00 pm with the “Christmas Gala and Holiday Pops Concert” featuring a variety of seasonal favorites and traditional classics. This annual concert always sells out, which brought the event to a larger venue at the John’s Creek United Methodist Church located at 11180 Medlock Bridge Road in John’s Creek, GA, 30097. “Virtuoso Strings!” will feature the JCSO string musicians on March 9, 2015 at 8:00 pm with a program that includes repertoire “from Bach to Bartok to Tchaikovsky and Copland.” This will be held at the John’s Creek High School Theatre, 5575 State Bridge Road, in John’s Creek. The season closes on May 9th at 8:00 pm with “Around the World in 80 Minutes!” Patrons will take a tour of the many musical offerings from countries such as Sweden, Russia, Spain, England, the South Pacific, and the USA. ohn’s Creek Symphony views the 20142015 season as an opportunity for growth. Based in a suburb well known for its burgeoning population and affluent lifestyle, the organization has three programs planned between December 2014 and May, 2015. But their goals reach beyond performance. A diligent planning process has led to significant goals: grow the patron base, increase attendance through a broadening of geographical reach, strive to attract a more varied audience, and focus on their signature educational outreach program “Meet the Orchestra!” After 8 years, it is time to reach beyond the organization’s own backyard. JCSO was founded in 2007 by Maestro J. Wayne Baughman with a mission to bring the citizens of John’s Creek and surrounding communities the world’s greatest symphonic music performed at the highest possible artistic levels. “We want the JCSO to be like a company that has a track record for steady, positive growth, and our product, ‘the world’s greatest symphonic music’ must continue to be presented to our audiences in the most professional and entertaining manner possible,” Baughman says. ATLANTA SYMPHONY HALL HOSTS A WHO’S WHO LIST OF WORLD RENOWNED ARTISTS From Classical to Country and every type of performer in between, Atlanta Symphony Hall is a class-act venue in the southeast.

tlanta Symphony Hall is home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and its many spectacular performances, but it also hosts performances by many world renowned artists. Boyle is known for her unassuming persona, yet angelic voice — plucked from obscurity into fame as a finalist of Britain’s Got Talent in 2009. he Alliance Theatre is pleased to announce its production of Robert Harling’s STEEL MAGNOLIAS. The quintessential story of family and friendship, this moving Southern classic tells the story of six complex women sharing life’s ups and downs in the safe-haven created in a home beauty salon. The STEEL MAGNOLIAS creative team is led by Director Judith Ivey. Ivey, a two-time Tony Award winning actress, directed sold-out staged readings of STEEL MAGNOLIAS in New York and Los Angeles in 2012 to celebrate its 25th anniversary, benefitting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. ew choral musicians across the world would object to Atlanta being hailed as a stalwart home of choral greatness in the 20th century. For many years, that greatness has been synonymous with one name: Robert Shaw. Mr. Shaw, conductor and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus from 1967-1988, created a world-wide legacy second to none in the realm of choral music. Hundreds of Atlanta-area singers have Mr. Shaw to thank for their addiction to joining voices together in both rapturous harmonies and simplistic unison; all toward the common goal of choral artistry. Atlanta Master Chorale, now in its 30th season, has evolved to both respect and advance the excellent gift of choral art that Mr. Shaw, and so many others, have given to Atlanta over the last 50 years. Since its inception in the spring of 1985, Atlanta MasterChorale (Gwinnett Festival Singers ’85-’00, Atlanta Sacred Chorale ’00-’13) has grown from an enthusiastic volunteer choir to a nationally-recognized ensemble of auditioned singers that is known equally for its technical 14

NEW SEASON FEATURES THREE PREMIERES AND TWO BEAUTIFUL CLASSICS By Holley Calmes
“T
he coming season of Gwinnett Ballet Theatre presents its young artists in a season that is fresh, diverse and original,” states GBT’s Artistic Director Wade Walthall. The season begins on October 4th and 5th at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center with a production titled “19-2021,” a name that represents dances performed to music from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The concept is indicative of the company’s direction under the artistic directorship of Wade Walthall: excellent classical ballet technique, innovative contemporary choreography and exciting collaboration with emerging artists. “19-20-21” will begin with the beautiful “Kingdom of the Shades” scene from Petipa’s “La Baydere.” “Kingdom of the Shades” is considered one of the most beautiful pieces in all of classical ballet, offering demanding corp de ballet, pas de deux and Photos by Richard Calmes variation performances. Next on the October program, and representing the 20th century, will be a premiere: GBT teacher and Atlanta Ballet alumnus David Blumenfeld has set a new neoclassical piece on the dancers titled “Time” using music by Phillip Glass. For the 21st century, Walthall has been inspired by an exciting young Atlanta artist, Mac Stewart. Stewart is a part of Atlanta’s Living Walls this year, painting a large mural at 156 Forsyth Street. His art is described as utilizing bold lines, geometric shapes, and detailed patterns. Together, Walthall and Stewart are creating “Pictures,” a contemporary ballet inspired by Stewart’s work. The young artist will be designing and painting set pieces and collaborating on costume concepts. GBT continues its season with their annual production of “The Nutcracker” with 11 public and 5 outreach shows from December 5-21. Eight of the public performances are accompanied by the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Orchestra, Predrag Gosta,Conductor. March 28th and 29th will welcome another premiere. Walthall’s “Journey,” a 3 act contemporary story ballet, will be performed for the first time in Georgia. Walthall says, “’Journey” is an everyman fairy tale of the stars which follows a young man through various stages of his life. He is led by the stars to choose either love or familiarity. It is a story of universal experience but unique to each individual.” All GBT performances are held at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center in Duluth, GA. The 150-member symphonic chorus, known for its agility and variety, will open its season with a concert of opera choruses and vignettes, team with the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet for A John Rutter Christmas, perform the ethereal and beautiful Rachmaninoff Vespers, then break out the rock and roll in a tribute to American Bandstand! The season opener, Fantasy of the Opera, will feature professional opera soloists Megan Mashburn, Marisan Corsino, Joseph Michael Brent, Brent Davis, and John LaForge. These five, along with the full MOS chorus, will take the listener on a tour of favorite and familiar opera choruses, ensembles and arias that will highlight the elaborate story lines and powerful emotions of love, betrayal, and joy, typical of the world of grand opera. SYNCHRONICITY THEATRE OPENING NEW MIDTOWN PERFORMANCE HUB By Caitlin Thomas White ATLANTA, GA — Synchronicity Theatre will move into a new permanent theatre venue this season at Peachtree Pointe in Midtown Atlanta. The local theatre has contracted with Emery & Associates to renovate the space and will open its 2014-2015 season on September 26th with the world premiere of Lasso of Truth. The rest of the season includes Family Series shows Lyle the Crocodile and StinkyKids the Musical and a staged reading of Beyond Reasonable Doubt: The Troy Davis Project, a new play by local playwright Lee Nowell. This is the first permanent theatre space for Synchronicity in its sixteen-year history, and is supported in part by the Dewberry Foundation. “Having our own home is a dream come true,” says Producing Artistic Director Rachel
Synchronicity Theatre’s new space will also provide a home for numerous performing arts organizations with no permanent venue. Affordable rental spaces for performances and rehearsals have become increasingly scarce in Atlanta since Dad’s Garage became a temporary resident at 7 Stages, Academy Theatre moved to Stockbridge, and the Woodruff Arts Center sold 14th Street Playhouse in January. Having rented performance space itself until this year, Synchronicity will now manage an affordable space for small arts companies, providing a solution to the rental quandary and a new, vibrant, multi-faceted hub for in-town performances. Life Sentence is a powerful album by musicians Melanie Hammett and Ben Holst, which tells the true story of Clarence Harrison, the first wrongfully convicted person to be freed from prison thanks to the efforts of the Georgia Innocence Project. Hammett and Holst will perform music from the album on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Buckhead. Harrison will share his inspirational journey from wrongful incarceration to freedom. The evening is a fundraiser for the Georgia Innocence Project and a $15 donation per person is suggested.
