CREATIVE PROCESS:
“It’s Your Party” this Season at Georgia Ensemble Theatre By Holley Calmes
“I
have always experienced that being an Artistic Director for major theatres has been a bit like being a Pied Piper,” states Robert Farley, the creative force behind Georgia Ensemble Theatre for the past 25 years. As his prior history includes the Artistic Directorship for the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and posts at multiple other major theatres, this “Pied Pipership” has been honed to perfect pitch as GET launches its Silver Anniversary Season this September. Performing at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, GET presents a season on their Main Stage including productions based on musical icons such as Buddy Holly and Rosemary Clooney. “Great music created by great musicians is, to me, iconic,” Farley explains. “It is a central element in touching all the right buttons that bring out empathy in all of us. Their music is our music, their story is our story.” Patrons will be offered another music-themed experience as they enjoy an “outrageously funny farce,” according to Farley. “A Comedy of Tenors,” a companion piece to the well-loved “Lend Me A Tenor,” is a greatly anticipated Southeastern premiere. Another premiere, one specifically commissioned for GET, is “Morningside,” a comedy set in one of Atlanta’s oldest “burbs” featuring a baby shower, nine women with secrets, and a case of champagne. What could possibly go wrong? “Birthing a new work (such as ‘Morningside’) for the stage is always exhilarating,” says Farley. GET is one of only 4 professional theatres
Georgia Ensemble Theatre , Artistic Director Robert Farley
operating outside Atlanta’s perimeter in the entire state of Georgia. “In 1990, it was clear to me that there was not only a huge audience OTP, but with successful programming that people really wanted to experience, we could attract patrons from far and wide,” Farley states. His clarity proved to be crystalline: his mastery of successful play selection a key element of success. “This has been a good and successful formula that has attracted thousands of seasoned and new patrons. The rationale behind play selection, for instance, is not that different now than when I was at the Alliance in the late 80’s.” Farley’s tenure at the Alliance produced one of the most celebrated productions of the century, “Driving Miss Daisy.” Farley concludes, “This season’s theme of ‘It’s Your Party!’ serves some of the most loyal patrons and supporters in the Atlanta Metro area. Our subscribers, donors, volunteers, and sponsors…..each show in this 25th Anniversary Season is a raising of the glass to them!”

he Alliance is taking all the shows of the 49th season on the road to multiple venues around the city while the current theater space undergoes a complete renovation, and season ticket packages are the best way to join the theater on the trip! Each production in the season is carefully selected to match its venue, like SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE at Oglethorpe University’s Conant Center for the Performing Arts, the former home of Georgia Shakespeare, and CROSSING DELANCEY, the heartwarming play that looks at two generations of JewishAmerican culture, at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta. And there’s HAND TO GOD, the hilarious and irreverent puppet comedy, at Dad’s Garage, and Natasha Tretheway’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of poetry, NATIVE GUARD, that examines lost stories of African-American Union troops at the Atlanta History Center just steps away from their extensive Civil War collection. The Alliance will co-produce a concert staging of the Tony Award-winning musical CANDIDE in
Symphony Hall with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, plus an outdoor adaptation of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The Alliance will also produce this year’s Alliance/Kendeda Competition winner at Actor’s Express, two one-act plays by Pearl Cleage at the Southwest Arts Center, three plays for youth and families, and its annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL at the Cobb Energy Centre. In addition to the Alliance’s season on the road, the Alliance will produce four Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young productions and one play space at the Woodruff Arts Center. Theatre for the Very Young produces professional productions designed for children ages infant-5 years old. The Alliance plans to return to its new theater space in time for its 50th anniversary season in late 2018. Season tickets and single tickets for the 2017/18 season are on sale now. In 2000 she was invited to join the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, where she performed throughout the U.S. and globally. “I am thrilled that Laura has joined our team not only as teaching faculty, but to assist in building our local and national presence in the dance community,” said Jacobson. “There are very few dance professionals in the Atlanta area with her depth of experience in both teaching and performing. Laura and I trained together as young dancers with Southern Ballet and share the same vision for creating an inclusive dance experience for people of all ages and abilities. She consulted with me as I designed the studio space and has been teaching at TADA since our Grand Opening. I’m very excited to have her on staff both as an administrator and teacher.” Throughout her career, Rossini has taught ballet, modern and contemporary dance to adults and children. She is also a certified yoga instructor and received her BFA in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Atlanta.

or the fortunate few who achieve their dream at a relatively young age, it can be challenging to find a satisfying “second act”. Not so for dancer Laura Rossini. After enjoying years of performing around the world with two of the country’s most prestigious dance companies, Rossini has returned to her hometown to inspire the next generation of dancers at TADA — The Atlanta Dance Academy in Midtown (www. tadaatlanta.com). In addition to teaching a variety of classes at the studio, she has also been named Studio Manager, and will work with TADA Founder Kara Jacobson to identify and recruit nationally-recognized guest teaching artists, foster strong relationships with other Atlanta arts organizations and assist with the day-to-day operations of the dance studio. Rossini began her dance studies locally with Southern Ballet of Atlanta and at Terpsichore Theater. In 1986 she received a Ford Foundation full merit scholarship to study at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York, and was invited to dance
