Alliance Theatre is Pleased to Announce Our 52nd Season

T

his season, the Alliance is reimagining how to gather, where to take the stage, and how a story comes to life. From drive-in movie style productions to socially-distanced shows on the Coca-Cola Stage and even a brand-new streaming platform, we are making meaningful, fun, and creative changes to serve our audiences. The new season reflects the Alliance’s continuing commitment to dynamic storytelling by and for a diverse group of people. The 52nd season includes six productions for adults, two for youth and families, and three productions for the Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young. The productions represent three important and timely themes: the need for joy, the need for dialogue, and the celebration of our heroes. “Theatre continues to be a necessary town square for essential conversations and a balm for our souls” said Susan

V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director. “Even in a pandemic and in deep and necessary civic unrest, still we are human. Still we love, we grieve, we rage, and we commune with friends and family — okay, maybe via Zoom, but still. We navigate forward, equally informed by truth and hope, and always in need of joy, dialogue, and heroes.” Learn more about our reopening plans.

WABE-FM’s Lois Reitzes Graces the Atlanta Arts Community with Decades of Dedication and “That Voice” By Holley Calmes

I

n 1979, a young woman recently graduated from Indiana University’s School of Music, began her employment at Atlanta’s classical music station, WABEFM. From 1982 to 2017 her low, melodious voice soothed listeners as she hosted “Second Cup Concert.” Then, expanded formats placed her as host of the station’s “City Lights” in 2017. She has served as the station’s Director of Programming and then Arts and Cultural Programming since 2007. But Lois Rietzes is so much more than that.

Generations of listeners have grown up considered her their personal voice of Atlanta’s arts. She is more than a representative of WABE’s “brand,” she is one of Atlanta’s Arts treasures. “Being on air as long as I have, people have come to associate me with the arts in Atlanta,” Reitzes explains. “That is something for which I am most grateful.” This gratitude came with a front row seat to witness Atlanta arts’ history. continued on page 8

Lois Reitzes, continued from page 6 “News is essential,” she says. “It’s essential for artists, especially performers, to stay connected with their audiences. We complete their work. Performing artists must have audiences, and many are feeling desperate now.”“My producers and I look for a wide range of people and topics to cover. In addition to the main artistic disciplines, we also like to cover culture-

“Maynard Jackson showed support for the arts by establishing a Bureau of Cultural Affairs which continues till this day,” she says. Reitzes lists the opening of Spivey Hall, the establishment of the Atlanta Opera and the arrival of Tomer Zvulun, plus annual Alvin Ailey productions as artistic milestones. “Also, Kenny Leon took

Henry Winkler and Lois Reitzes, Photo by Summer Evans the Alliance into another realm, and his successor, Susan Booth is a visionary.” “I hope Atlantans realize the treasures we have in local theatre here, with the likes of True Colors Theatre Company, Theatrical Outfit, Horizon Theatre, and Actor’s Express,” Reitzes states. How Atlanta keeps the arts thriving is another subject. “Everything begins with education,” says Reitzes. “The arts must be a major part of school criteria, and money is a factor. Funding for arts education must become a high priority.” As an example, Reitzes explains, “Finland has one of the most robust music scenes of any country, and reading music is required for graduation from high school there.” Reitzes’ mission now is to keep Atlantans on top of the arts through her “City Lights” show. She sees her career as a way to reinforce and encourage local arts.

related topics such as comedy and food. If I could interview Mel Brooks, I’d be over the moon! “I hope I have helped listeners discover a love for music,” Reitzes reflects. “Ideally, in 10 years, I hope that all the music, theatre, dance and literary events we currently have will still be around and will have expanded thanks to public support. I hope audiences will be more diverse in representation and that there is a wider range of programming.”

True Colors Theatre Company “Joy and Pain”

T

his Fall, Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company begins its exploration of the Black experience and the inextricable link of joy and pain for its Joy and Pain season. This season’s banner symbolizes the complexities and challenges the Black community faces today, while serving as a beacon, filled with rich color and diversity, to remind us all of the spectacular beauty of the Black community. True Colors dedicates this year to sharing Black stories, uncovering new Black truths, and reaffirming the value, grace, and excellence of Black lives. Like many other arts and cultural organizations during this unusual time, True Colors is adapting and finding ways to stay connected with its devoted audience, while offering new avenues for new audiences to engage with it. True Colors is providing virtual offerings, including a weekly podcast hosted by Artistic Director Jamil Jude, and a #RealResponses campaign that amplifies artists’ work in response to the Black Lives Matter Movement.

True Colors is continuing its popular Community Conversations series, which presents interactive discussions with preeminent thought leaders and artists in a virtual setting. The series will begin with Out of the Shadows: Access to the Arts for Southern Black LGBTQ, presented in partnership with The Counter Narrative Project. The conversation will focus on barriers to the arts that many Black, LGBTQ artists continue to face in today’s American South, as well as the bold and brave stories of overcoming these obstacles. This panel discussion will feature a number of distinguished Black, LGBTQ voices and will be available on True Colors’ website. Next up in the Community Conversations series is Black Branding: The Fight for Dignified Representation, in October. Other topics later in the season include Black Theatre and the Black Lives Matter Movement, among others. Children’s Book Exhibition at the High Museum of Art Tells Stories of Civil Rights Movement

T

his fall, the High Museum of Art presents “Picture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement through Children’s Books” (through Nov. 8), an exhibition organized in collaboration with The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. The exhibition is the first of its kind to delve into the events, people and themes of the civil rights movement, both celebrated and forgotten, through one of the most compelling forms of visual expression, the children’s picture book. The more than 80 artworks on view, ranging from paintings and prints to collages and drawings, will evoke the power and continuing relevance of the era that shaped American history and continues to reverberate today. The year 2020 marks the anniversary of several key events from the civil rights movement. Sixty-five years ago, in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Alabama. Five years later, Ruby Bridges integrated her New Orleans elementary school, and four Black students catalyzed the sit-in movement at the segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter in North Carolina. “Picture the Dream” will explore

those stories and more, and honor the movement’s icons, including Parks, Bridges, Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “One of the guiding aspects of our mission is a commitment to family audiences. Through our children’s book exhibitions, we aim to help adult visitors open meaningful dialogues with the children in their lives and create memories that will last a lifetime,” said Rand Suffolk, Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr., director of the High. “This exhibition will spark important conversations across generations about a crucial period in our nation’s history that connects directly to our city, a birthplace of the civil rights movement.” The exhibition is guest curated by New York Times-bestselling and Coretta Scott King Book Award-winning children’s book author Andrea Davis Pinkney. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Alliance Theatre at The Woodruff Arts Center will present an animated version of the world-premiere play “Sit-In,” written by Pearl Cleage and inspired by Pinkney’s book “Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down” (available for on-demand streaming in October). The Rialto Center for the Arts: The Show Must Go On

Tino Garrido

By Darlene Hamilton

F

or over a century, the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University has been a beacon for the arts in Downtown Atlanta. The Rialto has had many lives — as a vaudeville house, a movie theater and today as a performing arts center presenting world-class, international artists. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest, the Rialto had to pivot to find new ways to engage our audiences because the show must go on. It was necessary to expand beyond the confines of our building and delve completely into the world of virtual performances. During Georgia’s shelter-in-place orders, the Rialto introduced Rialto Replays which were broadcast on our social media platforms every Wednesday, featuring full-length Rialto Series performances archived by GSUTV including Lisa Fischer, Off the EDGE Dance Festival, and The Nile Project. In an effort to offer hope and support to the Atlanta community during these extraordinary times and to showcase local and emerging artists, we launched the Rialto Homegrown Artists Series. Our Homegrown Artists Series presents a variety of free, short, virtual

performances, every other Thursday at noon, from the homes of local artists. Our monthly lunch-and-learn series, Feed Your Senses, now features livestream performances. Connecting with partners in Atlanta and beyond, we recently partnered with Russell Gunn and the Blue Note New York to present “Live at the Rialto” Livestream featuring Russell Gunn and the Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra broadcast from the Rialto on Facebook and Instagram. As a result, the Rialto has reached over 30,500 through virtual performances — more than twice our live show reach each season. Our virtual performances may be viewed on demand on our website’s Rialto Performance Archives page. While we are thrilled to offer virtual performances and reach new audiences, we continue to explore and implement ways to safely bring audiences back to the Rialto for the high caliber performances they expect. As we implement measures to ensure the health and safety of our patrons, we stand ready to welcome you to the Rialto. Until then, join us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @RialtoCenter. The show goes on!

Journey to the unknown and discover our choristers’ hidden talents with our new Inspiring Artistry Series. Finally, eavesdrop on our Artistic Director, Eric Nelson, as he hosts Spirited Conversations with special guests in a behind-the-scenes look at the world of music. To register for the weekly emails or to learn more about the fall schedule, visit www.atlantamasterchorale.com or follow us on Facebook or Instagram (@ atlantamasterchorale). Did you know that Atlanta Master Chorale has a YouTube Channel and it recently surpassed 1,000,000 views? The channel features more than 100 chorale performances. There’s a little something for everyone. Enjoy its beauty and inspiration, by subscribing to our YouTube Channel. This past January, Atlanta Master

Chorale established the Eric Nelson Artistic Fund (ENAF) honoring Eric Nelson’s twentieth anniversary as Artistic Director, providing additional financial support to further our mission. The fund’s primary uses will support the development of commissioned chorale works, underwrite chorale members’ event-related travel expenses with the ensemble for guest appearances, and defray expenses to contract high-caliber guest artists to perform with the chorale. We believe that these three primary areas will benefit each member of the Chorale, enhance their overall choral experience, and support Eric’s deep passion for choral music, resulting in greater exposure to one of the truly great choirs in the United States. If you are interested in supporting this fund, donations may be made to “Atlanta Master Chorale - ENAF” and mailed to P.O. Box 133201, Atlanta, GA 30333 or via our website atlantamasterchorale.org. Michael Conducts Online Summer

The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE: Choral Singing in the Time of COVID-19

T

he Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, is entering its 32nd season of choral music-making. Since its inception, MOS has provided a unique opportunity to the north metro-Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. MOS recognizes the power vocal music has to connect and heal, and so offers choral opportunities to the community at large by hosting an annual December Messiah Sing-Along and a nonauditioned Summer Singers program. The 140-member symphonic chorus would normally now be gathering for weekly rehearsals to prepare fall and holiday concerts, but singing, and gathering in large groups, are too risky right now. The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE offers a way for choral singers to keep their voices in shape, learn and safely rehearse choral music with a choral “surround sound,” and visit with other singers in real time. Rehearsals are offered weekly via YouTube, and are followed by Zoom social sessions for those persons interested in visiting with other singers. The ONLINE MOS experience is not the same thing as a virtual choir, in which a singer records his/her individual voice and

a sound technician blends all the voices together. MOS ONLINE does not require a singer to record his or her voice; it feels more like singing in a mixed chorus arrangement, especially when headphones or earbuds are used. Those MOS ONLINE participants interested in also having a virtual choir experience can choose to participate in an optional ‘virtual audio’ performance. The Fall session of The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE is entitled Unity Through Song and the YouTube videos will ‘premiere’ each Monday evening at 8 p.m. EDT, from September 14 – October 19 (they can also be viewed any time after each ‘premiere’ showing). There is no registration fee for participation, although donations are gratefully accepted. Composers represented in Unity Through Song include Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Giuseppe Verdi, John Rutter, and Randall Thompson, among others. Singers may enroll from anywhere; MOS ONLINE currently includes participants from 24 states and four countries spread over three continents. Visit MOS on the web at www.mosingers.com or call 770.594.7974 to learn more about being part of The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE.

eginning September 9 and running through September 20, 2020 the Center for Puppetry Arts presents a live performance from its digital studios via Zoom of Jack and the Beanstalk (ages 2-12). In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center has expanded its virtual programming to include more live interactive online workshops and puppet shows, museum programming, virtual field trips, and ondemand video. In this very fractured telling of a fairy tale favorite, Jack must find a giant to solve a uniquely froggy problem! Jack and the Beanstalk is presented by awardwinning puppeteer, David Stephens. Stephens has toured the United States and Canada presenting one-man puppet shows, which he writes, directs, builds, produces and performs under the auspices of his Atlanta-based company, All Hands Productions. His work has been recognized by the Puppeteers of America and the American branch of Union Internationale de la Marionette (UNIMA), the world’s oldest theatrical organization focused on puppetry. Reimagining the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Fall Season

I

n the absence of concerts and large events due to COVID-19, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has remained dedicated to sharing the music with Atlanta and beyond on its Virtual Stage. This fall, the Orchestra will be returning to Symphony Hall for the first time since March for a reimagined season that prioritizes the safety and health of the performers and audiences. The fall 2020 concert programs will be performed without a live audience and will be distributed online as subscriber content on the ASO Virtual Stage. The new programs will be shorter in length, composed of smaller orchestral ensembles to meet social distancing requirements, and will feature most of the originally scheduled guest artists, such as Gil Shaham, Louis Lortie, and ASO Principal Bassoon Andrew Brady, plus new additions like ASO Principal Cello Rainer Eudeikis and double-bassist and Talent Development Program alumnus Xavier Foley.

“As musicians, our greatest joy is to share our love of music with our audiences, and we have missed them terribly,” said Robert Spano, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director. “We’ve also missed gathering on stage to make music together. We can’t wait to connect with all of you again this fall, even if it’s done virtually. We look forward to welcoming music lovers not only from Atlanta, but from around the world, to our Virtual Stage this fall.” A new robotic camera system in Atlanta Symphony Hall will provide enhanced audio and video quality for an immersive at-home experience for viewers. Viewers may purchase an ASO Virtual Membership to gain access to the reimagined concerts and enjoy great benefits like free ticket exchanges and discounts on future ASO concerts. Visit aso.org to view the reimagined fall season and enjoy the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra like never before — from the comfort of your living room!
