he Irish have an old carol: “Brush the floor, ready the hearth and set the fire to keep, for they might visit us tonight when all the world’s asleep. Don’t blow the tall white candle out but leave it burning bright, so that they’ll know they’re welcome here this cold Christmas night.” And so, Atlanta’s Celtic Christmas has been welcoming guests in from the cold since its beginnings at Emory University’s Glenn Memorial Auditorium in 1990. Producer and director John Maschinot credits an amazingly talented cast and crew with its success. Featured this year are Dublin born singer/ harpist Cormac De Barra; singer/composer Ashley Davis; Solas founding member John Doyle (Ireland’s favorite singer and guitarist!), who’s blazed the way for a generation of Irish guitarists with his powerfully rhythmic, jazz influenced guitar work, and sings a treasure of beautiful songs learned from a lifetime of music. Scottish fiddle master Jamie Laval, referred to as “One of North America’s finest practitioners of traditional Scottish music” inevitably moves an audience to its feet with his impeccably crafted, stinging fiddle solos. And humorist/ fiddler/mandolinist/percussionist extraordinaire “Jolly Joe” Craven never fails to delight with his over-the-top antics! At the heart of Atlanta’s Celtic Christmas

are a host of performers who are the pride of the region: Leah Calvert, bluegrass inspired fiddle and soulful singing; The Buddy O’Reilly Band, featuring the haunting sound of the Irish uilleann pipes and the beautiful vocals of Lisa Edwards; The Rosin Sisters and Whit Connah, sweet harmonies from the Southern Appalachian mountain tradition; Kelly Stewart, a rare performer on the unique Welsh triple harp and Celtic harp, flatfoot clogger Jesse “Dynamite” Edgerton; Scottish Highland dance, Highland pipes and drums, Irish step dance, and the poetry of Arís Theatre company. Arts@Tech Features New Work Under Leadership of Madison Cairo

rom the life of Rodney King, to love in the age of social media, to the story of Poe’s last days, the 2015-16 Arts@Tech season has a new look and feel that reflects a new excitement and expanded mission for the arts at Georgia Tech. With a theme of “Get Your Game On,” the season is the first under the leadership of Director Madison Cario. She is incorporating new forms of work into the line-up, especially theatre pieces, and many feature deeper engagement experiences for the community and campus. Cario came to Georgia Tech in 2014 from The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Pennsylvania, where she served for seven years. Charged with helping to enhance the creativity of Georgia Tech students through engagement and participation in performing and visual arts experiences, Cario has expanded collaboration, programming, visibility, and support for the arts. Incorporating theatre into a season of music and dance offers the community the chance to see nationally-recognized theatre performers who rarely perform in Atlanta. The season features: • Actor Roger Guenveur Smith’s one man show Rodney King • Sister Outsider — spoken word with poets Dominique Christina and Denice Frohman

• Mark Gindick’s Wing-Man, a oneclown show on love in the age of social media • PostSecret: The Show based on the Internet phenomenon of shared stories and secrets • Okwui Okpokwasili’s Bronx Gothic, chronicling the sexual exploits of young girls • Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental’s Red Eye to Havre de Grace, following Edgar Allan Poe’s mysterious final days • Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale, a story of Harlem gentrification • An Evening with Marc Bamuthi Joseph, a collaboration with Poetry@ Tech featuring the multi-faceted artist/ educator/activist. Many performances run for multiple nights, and several feature daytime matinees open to the public. Performances are held at the Ferst Center for the Arts and in other locations on the midtown Atlanta campus. Georgia State University School of Music Brings in the Holiday Spirit with their Annual Gala Holiday Concert

he holiday season doesn’t officially begin until Georgia State University’s School of Music presents its annual Gala Holiday Concert at the Rialto Center for the Arts. A perennial favorite, the concert features more than 200 Georgia State student musicians performing seasonal favorites to put you in the holiday spirit. This year’s concert will feature the University Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Saxophone Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, University Singers, Choral Union and Master Singers, Percussion ensemble, as well as performances from the School of Music piano studio and Opera Theater Workshop. This is the Gala’s 19th year, and during its history it has striven for variety and freshness. “Treat your ears to some seasonal tunes at the Gala Holiday Concert…The more than 200

he Michael O’Neal Singers organization, based in Roswell, is pleased to announce its 27th Concert Season. The 160-member symphonic chorus, known for its agility and variety, will open its season with a concert of bluegrass and gospel music, team with the Greater Atlanta Girls’ Choir and Georgia Philharmonic for concerts this winter, then explore Broadway hits of the past 25 years in its season finale. MOS offers two holiday concerts in December 2015. And The Angels Sang features the full MOS chorus and the Greater Atlanta Girls’ Choir collaborating for a Christmas program filled with joyous and familiar anthems and carols. There may even be a visit from a VERY special Christmas personality! And The Angels Sang takes place on Sunday, December 6 at 3 p.m. at Roswell United Methodist Church. CORE Takes the Stage for it’s 30th Anniversary Season in Atlanta By Julie Herron Carson

015-2016 marks the 30th anniversary of CORE, the award-winning contemporary dance organization based in Atlanta and Houston (www.coredance.org). To commemorate this milestone year, CORE is partnering with Atlanta’s High Museum of Art to present a series of site-specific dance works inspired by two of the High’s exhibits — Habsburg Splendor: Masterpieces from Vienna’s Imperial Collection and Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion. Johns Creek Orchestra 10th Anniversary Christmas Gala Holiday Pops Concert!

n December 19, 2015 at 8:00pm, the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra will present their annual Christmas Gala Holiday Pops Concert in the beautiful sanctuary of Johns Creek United Methodist Church. But this year, there is something rather unique about the performance. It marks the 10th Anniversary of this concert — 10 years of delighting audiences comprised of patrons from Johns Creek and all over the greater north metro region. Yes, that is 10 years and 10,000 patrons! A rather remarkable milestone. And remarkable is what this concert will be. Maestro Baughman has prepared an exceptional night of music in honor of this special anniversary. The repertoire has been carefully crafted to reflect all the many seasonal moods representative of this time of year. This required the services of some very talented performers to bring this program to life, and Maestro Baughman knew exactly who he wanted to make this a reality. Joining the JCSO once again will be Jazz Trumpeter/ Vocalist and Big Band leader Joe Gransden, soprano Jeanné Brown, and baritone Brent Davis. Each bring their unique talents to this program, and with the support of the entire JCSO and Christmas Gala Chorus, will provide some memorable performances for this anniversary celebration.

When asked about getting to this point, Maestro Baughman remarked that, “I am personally gratified that we have been able to bring this sort of joyous musical experience to our community for all these years.
