Eric Nelson and the Atlanta Master Chorale Conquer the Pandemic by Creating New Ways to Touch the Human Spirit
T
By Holley Calmes
he year 2020 will forever be known as a difficult time, considering the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on the performing arts. With quarantined theatres and performances cancelled, both artists and audiences have suffered. The Atlanta Master Chorale and Artistic Director Eric Nelson, however, have taken the hardships in stride, finding creative ways to bring their music to the people. For example, their website’s Virtual Concert Hall series provides “an insider’s look at all things Atlanta Master Chorale.” “We cannot meet together to sing,” says Nelson, “but we can still present videos of our favorite past performances.” In addition to these concerts, individual musicians have spotlight performances taped exclusively for website visitors, and more material is in the works. Beginning as the Gwinnett Festival Singers in 1985, it was Nelson’s hiring in 2000 that launched the group’s trajectory towards nationally recognized excellence. “There is so much to be proud of!” Nelson says. “For example, the ensemble was chosen to sing at the American Choral Director’s Association in Minneapolis in 2017. I like to tell my non-choral friends that singing at the ACDA convention is roughly equivalent to a college basketball team making the Final Four.” “Variety of repertoire is very impor-
tant to us,” Nelson explains. “One unusual thing about our programming is that we often group pieces based on a theme or subject rather than a historical period or genre. As a result, our concerts are well unified in terms of idea but widely divergent in terms of musical style. It keeps things interesting!” “Collaborations with other organizations in Atlanta have been and continue to be important to us,” Nelson says. “We have sung joint concerts with the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir and the Morehouse Glee Club. We’ve performed with actor Tom Key, international opera singer Jamie Barton, and we have a concert planned with a fantastic local bluegrass band!” “We are proud to be a part of the vibrant arts community in Atlanta,” Nelson continues. “Our singers live and work right here in the metro area.” Not surprisingly, a return to live performance is in Nelson and the Chorale’s near future. “We can’t wait until we can be together again at Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, singing the music we love for our patrons, friends, and neighbors.” View Atlanta Master Chorale’s video, Silent Night - http://bit.ly/ SilentNightAtlMasterChorale Lyrics by Joseph Mohr and Original Music by Franz Gruber, arranged by Eric Nelson.

From Our Homes to Yours, “Georgia’s Home for the Holidays” Delivers Festive Music of the Season Directly to You
I
’ll be Home for Christmas takes on a whole new meaning this year as we celebrate the holiday season. Without a risk-free way to sing or play in groups, or host audiences in traditional concert venues, choral and instrumental artists in the time of COVID-19 have chosen to be creative and keep the spirit in the season. One of the silver linings of the COVID-19 “cloud” is the innovative spirit of collaboration that emerged among some musical arts organizations in our state. Georgia’s Home for the Holidays is a collaborative musical venture involving hundreds of singers and instrumentalists from the Metropolitan Atlanta area and beyond. Organized by leaders of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Atlanta Master Chorale, and The Michael O’Neal Singers, this project is a 35-day series of seasonal musical videos to be presented ‘virtually’ through YouTube, Facebook, and other social media between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Each 5-7-minute video features one choral or orchestral group from the area, sharing artistic content related to expressions of the winter holiday season. Timothy Verville, Music Director and Conductor of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, is the creative force behind the project’s extensive audio and video editing. Marietta-based businessman Ira Jackson, Jr. lends his bass voice to introduce each day’s video. The project originated during an August 2020 Zoom meeting among leaders of Georgia choral groups who were struggling with choral programming concerns. This group, an informal choral roundtable called Choral Music of Metro Atlanta (CMMA), exists to foster support and collaboration among the Georgia choral community and raise
collective awareness of the diverse vocal music organizations available in central and northern Georgia. During the COVID-19 situation, volunteers and staff members of these organizations have met via Zoom to exchange information on critical topics such as scenario planning, participant and audience engagement, scientific resources on safe singing, and options for virtual choral programming. The Georgia’s Home for the Holidays project was first intended to provide a virtual performance opportunity for Atlanta-area music organizations who have limited options for sharing their art at this time, but other purposes came to light. Furthering collaboration among Georgia’s smaller, diverse musical arts organizations IS something that can be accomplished in this pandemic, when the safety of singing and playing wind and brass instruments is in question. Recognizing that audiences are also missing live musical programs during the 2020 holidays, the video series will help fill the void of in-person concerts by sharing December holiday music with at-home audiences in our region and beyond. The daily videos feature choral and instrumental musicians from 32 ensembles based as far north as Gainesville and as far south as Peachtree City. Beginning the morning after Thanksgiving, episodes will premiere daily, then be available for viewing anytime thereafter. Episodes are available on the Georgia Symphony Orchestra’s Facebook and YouTube pages, and at holidays.georgiasymphony.org where viewers may also register to have the videos delivered to them directly via email. For a full list of participating organizations, visit holidays.georgiasymphony.org.

Let the 39th Season Begin

The Nutcracker 2019, Photo by Abigail Photos
hen planning began in January for Atlanta Dance Theatre’s 39th season, a global pandemic never crossed our minds. With theaters going black in March of 2020, many non-profits seasons were compromised. Spring productions were cancelled, seasons ended and the world went virtual. During the spring and summer months, our Artistic Director, Shelley Grames, never lost hope. “The world needs the arts, our youth need the arts.” Finding a way to safely navigate COVID-19 and provide opportunities for our dancers became our first priority. Through much planning and implementation of Center For Disease Control guidelines, we were able to open our doors in June for our Summer Intensives. Dancers were able to safely begin training again and there was a newness in the air. The dancers’ appreciation to be dancing again was palpable. Onto the Nutcracker! Our season starts with visions of sugar plums in the timeless tradition of The Nutcracker. We are very excited to be back on stage at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. This year’s cast is a talented and energetic group of dancers. “I think all of us, myself and the dancers, are more appreciative and focused. With the pandemic, our joy in performing was taken away. Now with the promise of our upcoming production, we find ourselves invigorated!” says Shelley Grames. Tickets will be available to the public, with a socially distanced audience and safety measures in place. On we go to the Party, Battle, Snow Forest and finishing in the Land of Sweets! The stage will be filled with color, acting and magical dancing. We believe that our Guest Artist Cast is one of the best in Atlanta. Returning to our stage are Jonah Hooper, Robert Chabot, Lonnie Davis, Erick Jackson, Eric Nash and Katherine Ricardo. ADT will be teaming up again with Roswell Dance Theatre in March of 2021 at Byers Theatre at Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center, for an exciting joint performance! We will be presenting Aladdin and RDT will be presenting Alice In Wonderland. It is a show not to miss! Be part of our 39th season!

The Show Must Go On: How Roswell Dance Theatre is Finding New Ways to Connect
I
n the 2020 world of the arts, Roswell Dance Theatre is finding a way for our artists to engage and perform. For dancers that have been training year-round since middle school or younger, taking an extended break from classes was not an option. With so much work and dedication to their art established, students from the Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance found a way to persevere. After initially switching to online classes in the late spring, our company members began dancing again in-studio during the summer. Today in our new facility, with 24,000 square feet of space, dancers wear their masks and carefully follow stringent safety protocols to be able to keep training safely. In September, we continued the 30 plus year run of our annual charity performance, HUGS From Young Choreographers, and

Many things in 2020 have been difficult but finding a way to continue the dance calendar has meant the world to the students. Staying engaged, physically training and emotionally connecting with peers in the studio has been a bright spot for all. The families are supportive of the opportunity for something familiar and satisfying to be part of their week. Faculty and staff are thankful for the opportunity to stay active and employed. Like any dance company, a big part of the year focuses on the annual production of The NUTCRACKER. The performances are the culmination of months of planning, training and execution. The financial outcome helps sustain the company throughout the year. This year we are continuing to perform, but in a new way. Visit www.RoswellNutcracker.com to check out our livestream options. We cannot wait to be back at the spectacular Byers Theatre in Sandy Springs with the thrill of a packed house and joyous applause. For now, we will keep dancing, dreaming, and discovering new ways to connect with our audience.

KSU Department of Dance to Present “Threshold” Dance-for-Camera Event Rethinks how to Present Dance
K
ennesaw State University’s Department of Dance will present “Threshold” Nov. 12-15, via ArtsKSU Virtual. The performances are free of charge and only a simple reservation is required. “Threshold” celebrates the diverse artistic voices of the KSU Dance community through original works performed by the award-winning KSU Dance Company, in the first dance-for-camera event for KSU. The restraints of attempting to host an audience during a pandemic led faculty to seek creative options. Artistic director and assistant professor Lisa K. Lock said, “We came to the solution that we could create a performance specifically for the camera… by adapting to the situation, by rethinking about how to present the media of dance in a live performance.” Department of Dance chair Marsha Barsky added, “Doing a dance-for-camera event actually allowed us to escape restraints, both for the audience and the dancers. The very nature of contemporary dance is that it’s an evolving method, the heart of our work on contemporary performance. The choreographers are looking at new frameworks and artistic strategy at this unique moment and evolving their perspectives and practices.” Each work
combines cutting-edge technology with original choreography, created by distinguished faculty members Andrea Knowlton, Sean Nguyen-Hilton, McCree O’Kelley, and guest artist Thang Dao. Barsky said, “The KSU choreographers have risen to this occasion; each choreographer is creating work that honors dance and celebrates dance as an art form. Also, the work becomes more accessible to audiences beyond the metropolitan area, beyond the state’s borders, to the world. It becomes boundless.” Another unique aspect about the event will be live talkbacks with the choreographers to allow a closer look into the thought processes behind the works. “Dance can be very abstract, so it’s helpful to hear the choreographer talk about it,” said Lock. “I hope the audience will experience a new way of connecting with contemporary dance and feel the joy, intensity, virtuosity and power; the celebration of the body in motion and our shared humanity in this moment, in a different medium from what we normally present.” said Barsky. Don’t miss “Threshold” Nov. 12-15, via ArtsKSU Virtual. Reserve your space for this free, virtual performance.

Stan the Lovesick Snowman:
Love Warms the Coldest Heart, Nov. 24 - Jan. 3
T
he Center for Puppetry Arts is thrilled to announce the reopening of their theater for the holiday season with a production of the heartwarming and funny Stan the Lovesick Snowman, based on the Hans Christian Andersen short story “The Snow Man.” The story is adapted and directed by the Center’s artistic director Jon Ludwig. Opposites attract in Stan the Lovesick Snowman, a charming tale of unrequited love. Stan’s delightful story begins after a chance encounter with a dog that has been sent outside in the wintry cold. The dog tells the snowman about a warm stove inside the house, and with a “crackcrackle” in his heart, Stan falls in love with the wood-burning beauty. The unlikely romance, doomed from the start, is only the beginning in this hilarious tale as Stan later discovers that a young snowwoman is swooning over him as well. “Stan is the ultimate hopeless romantic,” says Jon Ludwig. “There is so much humor in a snowman in love with a wood stove and there is a sweet lesson that ‘love will win in the end’. It’s a
good time to warm ourselves up with an enchanting tale of misdirected love and the ultimate understanding of who your real friends are.” Husband and wife puppeteer-duo Tim and Amy Sweeney portray 13 characters in the production. This delightful fairy tale, recommended for ages four and up, will melt the hearts of audiences everywhere. The Center will continue to follow the guidelines from the CDC to ensure the safety of their visitors. Tickets will be limited to reduce capacity inside the theater to allow for social distancing and visitors will be required to wear a mask for the duration of their visit. In addition, the Center will thoroughly sanitize the theater between performances. Ticket prices vary by date and include the performance, entrance to the Create-A Puppet Workshop™, where guests can make, decorate and perform with their own Stan the Lovesick Snowman Hand Puppet, and admission to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum. he Atlanta Opera is coming to Oglethorpe. In an unprecedented move for the company, the Fall 2020 season will begin with an outdoor concert series: The Opera’s Molly Blank Big Tent Series. Performed in an innovative open-air venue in Oglethorpe University’s expansive Hermance Stadium, the Opera will present Leoncavallo’s iconic Pagliacci performed in repertory with The Kaiser of Atlantis. Each production will have nine performances, alternating nightly, for a total of 18 performances, beginning October 22 and closing on November 14. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art will premiere two exhibits through a free virtual walkthrough experience. “Promesas de Papel/Paper Promises” is a collection of prints and installations from Latinx artist Maria Cristina Tavera, an independent curator and activist inspired by her transnational upbringing in Mexico and Minnesota. In her work, Tavera explores themes of race, ethnicity, gender, migration, and cultural amalgamation through savvy pastiches of Latin American
pop iconography. “Rufino Tamayo: Textures of our Lives,” explores the arc of the renowned Mexican artist through colorful prints of his traditional vision of Mexico. Both exhibits will be available to view starting October 30. The Oglethorpe Museum of Art will also host several lectures, artist interviews and small concerts throughout the fall semester. Though many of our talented musicians cannot meet in person this semester, Oglethorpe students always find a way to rise to a challenge. Last semester, the Oglethorpe University Singers assembled a virtual choir to perform their final piece for the year, Mozart’s “Dies Irae.” Several talented students live-streamed their own musical performances; other students have original music being released right now. Oglethorpe’s talented, Grammynominated alumnus John Burke played the piano on Facebook Live. Let Oglethorpe University bring the arts to you. Gwinnett Ballet Theatre’s “The Nutcracker” Returns to Duluth’s Infinite Energy Theatre By Holley Calmes
A
holiday favorite returns in a live theatre staging just in time to lift sequestered spirits. Gwinnett Ballet Theatre’s “The Nutcracker” will be performed in Duluth’s Infinite Energy Theatre on the first three weekends in December. The production will offer a cast of professional and student performers, a full orchestra for many shows, sumptuous sets and costumes, and a strict adherence to safety guidelines. It took a little magic and the merger of two prominent artistic groups, but there was never a doubt that the show would go on. After all, Gwinnett Ballet Theatre has performed “The Nutcracker” every Christmas for almost four decades. Lori Zamzow-Wire, GBT’s new Artistic Director, explains, “’The Nutcracker’ has been a Christmas tradition for so many families over the years, and we’re pleased to be able to continue that tradition.” This year’s production will offer a traditional “Nutcracker” with all the beautiful music, lively storytelling, and endearing characters that draw audiences year after year. Both matinee and evening performances are offered. This production of “The Nutcracker“ will be the first major performance given by
both Gwinnett Ballet Theatre and Sugarloaf Youth Ballet. The two organizations joined forces last February to create a premier dance studio that offers opportunities for professional dancers and for students who aspire to perform at the highest levels. Both organizations are now housed in Sugarloaf Performing Arts’ large studios in Suwanee, GA, which include a dance school, a youth ballet company, a daytime ballet conservatory, and the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre professional ensemble. Zamzow-Wire studied dance at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and has performed in several professional companies. The Ballet Master is Bruce Thornton, a 15-year veteran of Mimi City Ballet and formerly on staff at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. In creating Sugarloaf Youth Ballet, and now with the addition of Gwinnett Ballet Theatre, Zamzow-Wire fulfills a long-held goal. She says, “My vision has always been to create a full ballet company that can give dancers an opportunity to perform at home.” Gwinnett Ballet Theatre’s Professional Company Season will continue in the winter with a modern and contemporary series and a Spring production of Beauty and the Beast.

On the heels of their sold-out Downtown Dialogues series, Theatrical Outfit will continue their 2020-2021 Season with more exciting online experiences.
T
here are over 3,000 people affected by homelessness in downtown Atlanta alone. Disproportionately black, this population is at increased risk of contracting COVID-19 and experiencing severe symptoms stemming from the virus. As a long-standing member of the downtown Atlanta community, we at Theatrical Outfit recognize the role we can play in supporting and uplifting this population. Anticipating a rise in those affected by homelessness in the coming months, we have decided now is the time to act. TO is partnering with BLACT ATL to present “The Welcome Table”, where artistry and service meet. This one-night event will connect and inspire our community as we raise money to directly support the front-line organizations that serve the Atlanta homeless population. “The Welcome Table” will feature firsthand stories and interviews interwoven with music and monologues. A night of service, a night of art, a lifetime of community.
In January, Theatrical Outfit is excited to once again partner with the Working Title Playwrights (WTP) for the Unexpected Play Festival. This monthlong festival celebrates brand new work by local playwrights, all being heard for the first time. Each digital reading will be immediately followed by a discussion led by WTP Artistic Director Amber Bradshaw, in which the audience will offer essential feedback that will help the playwright take the work to the next level. At Theatrical Outfit, January will bring a new year, new work, and brand-new conversations that matter. Keep checking in with Theatrical Outfit on social media for the latest news and behind-the-scenes images. And, coming soon will be a very special holiday announcement! Theatrical Outfit is excited to keep welcoming you all back … digitally for now, then in person when it is safe … for more smart, authentic, and vital storytelling that starts the conversations that matter.

A Year with Frog and Toad at Synchronicity Theatre: Virtual or In-Person! December 11, 2020 - January 3, 2021
M
idtown’s Synchronicity Theatre is bringing back the whimsical and irresistible retelling of Arnold Lobel’s A Year With Frog and Toad. This version of the Tony-nominated musical follows the cheerful, popular Frog, and the grumpy Toad, through all of their fun-filled escapades. Part vaudeville, part magic, and all charm, this holiday favorite tells a story of friendship that endures every season. This year, Synchronicity Theatre’s 2020-2021 Season, will feature hybrid “In the Theatre” and “On the Screen” formats to reach more audiences and provide socially-distanced opportunities to see family-friendly shows whenever possible. Each production will be recorded and available to view digitally at home for up to three weeks after the performance opens. Virtual school performances are also available. Two weeks before every production,
the Synchronicity Theatre Box Office Staff will notify ticket holders if performances will be canceled due to any COVID-related circumstances. Audiences will also be informed if there are any changes that will be made to programming. All ticket confirmations will include a link to digitally stream the performance. The Company will still be hosting popular family-favorite events such as “PJs & Play” every Friday night, where children wear pajamas and watch the show, and “Inside Scoop,” where the audience can meet the cast and hear about the production after the 2 p.m. matinee on December, 13th. New this year is a “PJs & Play Virtual Viewing Party” on Friday, December 15th at 7 p.m., followed by a Zoom Post-Show Chat. For a complete holiday schedule, ticket prices, and for more information, please visit synchrotheatre.com.
