ATLANTA BALLET & GEORGIA BALLET CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NUTCRACKER
Anne Harshbarger and Nathan Griswold Photo by Charlie McCullers
most beloved gift to the city city, Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker Nutcracker, celebra celebrates its golden anniversary this season as the holiday classic returns to the stage of the Fabulous Fox Theatre December 11-27. Cherished by Atlanta families for three generations, Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker is the endearing story of one girl’s Christmas Eve in which fantasy becomes reality, as the Christmas Tree grows to dizzying heights, the evil Rat King explodes from a fiery furnace, the infantry arrives and the Nutcracker sweeps her off to a land where Dream Fairies dance in snow-filled forests and the world is filled with all things wonderful. Atlanta Ballet first brought Nutcracker to the stage in 1959, performing George Balanchine’s version of the timeless tale. In that year, Atlanta Ballet was the only regional company allowed to perform this signature piece; thanks to Atlanta Ballet’s then Associate Artistic Director Robert Barnett, who had danced with Balanchine at New York City Ballet. “We gave it as a gift,” says Barnett, “inviting children from all counties to come in and see the performance. It was a gift from Mr. Balanchine and he never charged us a cent for doing it.” From that day forward, Nutcracker has been an annual event in Atlanta. In 1995, Atlanta Ballet’s third artistic director, John McFall, created a brand new Nutcracker for the city of Atlanta. McFall’s vision was to create a Nutcracker that was “traditional yet new, familiar yet different, classic yet contemporary and above all, magical.” Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker today is a spectacle of music and dance set in a Russian wonderland filled with opulent period costumes and amazing special effects, all to enchant the child in you. Atlanta Ballet’s company of professional dancers share the stage with over 250 young dancers from across the city, giving Atlanta’s youth a chance to experience the magic of being on the Fox Theatre stage. 6

SHOWGUIDE COMPANY PROFILE
THE SHAKESPEARE TAVERN
he Shakespeare Tavern is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary on Peachtree Street. For twenty years, they have produced almost every Shakespeare play (and may even complete his cannon this season) as well as countless other classical plays and musicals. They have gone through three renovations since opening in 1990, having completed the third just before they opened in September. In addition to their 20 years on Peachtree Street, they are also celebrating their 25th season as a company. The Atlanta Shakespeare Company has been in performance since 1984. Before they became The Atlanta Shakespeare Company, they were The Atlanta Shakespeare Club, a small group of people who came together to read Shakespeare plays together. For five years the company performed at various venues around town such as Masquerade, The Roxy and of course Manuel’s Tavern. It was at Manuel’s that Artistic Director Jeff Watkins started looking for a permanent home for his company. Wanting to recreate that same intimate tavern atmosphere, he set about to design a theater with wooden tables and chairs, food and drinks available for purchase and of course, the words of William Shakespeare reverberating through the brick walls. There is a lot of history coursing through the Tavern, not counting the 400 year old words of a British poet. The building used to be a dialysis clinic in the 1970’s; it also used to be an automobile dealership. They believe the original use of the building was a horse and buggy repair shop. The future holds a very exciting possible building expansion, but for now they are enjoying performing at the Tavern, entertaining Atlanta audiences and educating students from all over the Southeast. They have gone from a small traveling band of actors to a fully-realized acting company that performs an average of 12 plays a season, with an Apprentice Training Program and an Education Outreach Department. The Tavern’s pride and joy is its audience which consistently comes out and support the company month after month. They invite everyone to celebrate their 20th season by coming to see all the shows they have on the boards at 499 Peachtree Street.

MICHAEL C. CARLOS MUSEUM
BRINGING CIVILIZATION TO LIFE
ince the beginning of time, people around the world have endeavored to express themselves, relate their histories, and understand the mysteries of human experience through their creations. Whenever a culture articulated its ideas and beliefs, expressed itself with beauty and insight, or made simple tools for everyday life, amazing objects were created. Each object tells a story of its time. The stories of civilization, stories of love, power, beauty, glory, and faith, are revealed at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, where the histories of world cultures are brought to life through exceptional works of art and rare artifacts. The face of a pharaoh speaks of eternal power, an ancient athlete rests in glory, a reclining Vishnu dreams of beloved Lakshmi, a young girl becomes the beautiful bride of the water spirit, and a shaman transforms into a jaguar to traverse the universe … Visit the Southeast’s most distinguished collection of art and artifacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Located at the heart of Emory University’s Atlanta campus and exhibited in the landmark building designed by noted architect Michael Graves, these works of art and artifacts reveal the Carlos Museum’s meticulous care for the legacy of ancient civilizations and the learning opportunities innate in each artifact. A 1985 interior renovation, along with a 35,000square-foot expansion in 1993 transformed the Carlos Museum into a destination for special exhibitions. From locally organized exhibitions to those from nationally and internationally celebrated institutions, including the Louvre, British Museum, and Israel Museum, the Carlos Museum serves as the South’s premier museum of ancient art. Discover even more through gallery talks, children’s programs, interactive technology, audio tours, family guides, special exhibitions, films, and much more.
