THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER WOODTURNER

JIMMY LEE orn in Atlanta in 1960, Jimmy Lee first studied photography and worked in the family photo studio. His documentary photo work garnered awards and has been exhibited in several Atlanta galleries. Lee has always enjoyed working with his hands, and while working as a photographer, Lee acquired skills in home building and working with wood. In 2007, Jimmy encountered the woodturning art of master craftsmen Ed Moulthrope and Mark Sillay. He was inspired by the extraordinary varieties of wood color and texture, and soon acquired a lathe of his own. He discovered deep satisfaction and creative expression as he quickly progressed in this discipline and began creating his own wood forms and vessels. In his first year, Lee had work represented in four Atlanta galleries and was accepted into four juried arts festivals including the Dogwood, Atlanta’s oldest and largest arts festival. His woodturning was showcased by Fox News at the 2009 Virginia Highland Summerfest. Also in 2009, Lee was awarded a scholarship by the Georgia Association of Woodturners—a significant recognition by master craftsmen whose work was Lee’s initial inspiration. In 2010 he was elected vice president of the Georgia Association of Woodturners. Lee is currently mentoring with master woodturner Mark Sillay. For more information visit www.jimmylee.biz.

SNAPSHOT OF HISTORY

REMEMBERING ALFREDO BARILI (1854-1935) by Ann Boutwell

n Atlanta, November 17, 1935, an elderly distinguished, gentleman accidently stumbled in the path of a city bus on the Ponce de Leon corner of Myrtle Street. Tirelessly, he had given 55 years of musical genius to his adopted city. He died immediately. Alfredo Barili (18541935) was his name. On August 2, 1854, the native Italian was born in Florence. Four months later, Alfredo immigrated to the United States with his parents. His mother was eighteen-year-old Antoinetta Sampo (1839-1893) and 26-year-old Ettore Barili (1828-1885) was his father. He was a member of the famous Barili-Patti clan, who produced so much musical talent during the 1800s, it was deemed the “Musical America’s First Family.” On February 19, 1855, Ettore, a famous baritone, premiered Italian-born Alfredo Barili move to Atlanta in 1880 the role of Rigoletto in Giuseppe Verdi’s three-act opera at New York’s opulent and played a major role in Academy of Music, which seated 4,600. establishing the foundation for city’s classical music culture. Alfredo spent his childhood in the Barili-Patti’s New York household, Photo by N. Lee Orr. which included his twelve-year-old aunt Adelina Patti. In 1903, the acclaimed opera diva publically credited her singing foundation to Ettore’s teaching methods. She told the Saturday Evening Post that her half-brother’s method was now taught in Atlanta by her nephew Alfredo Barili. Under Ettore’s rigid training, ten-year-old Alfredo made his New York debut in Irving Hall, April 7, 1865. The reviews—Herald, Sunday Times, and Evening Post—pointed to proficiency as a pianist. Glowing terms expressed future promises leading to something first-class. “First Class,” said Georgia State University’s N. Lee Orr, author of Alfredo Barili and the Rise of Classical Music in Atlanta “is a phrase that definitely comes to mind when discussing the total picture of Alfredo Barili.” In Philadelphia, Alfredo studied piano with Carl Wolfsohn (1834-1907). In 1872, he entered Germany’s Cologne Conservatory of Music to work with conductor and composer Ferdinand Hiller (18111885). He also rekindled a relationship with Emily Vezin, a student and former Philadelphia acquaintance. They married in Newark, N.J. in November 23, 1877. By August 1880, the couple relocated from Philadelphia to Atlanta. The reason was due possibly to Alfredo’s asthma or other health issues. They both secured teaching positions at Mrs. Ballard’s fashionable Atlanta Female Institute on Peachtree Street. The weekly Sunny South publication noted their arrival and mentioned Alfredo’s impressive reputation as a pianist and composer. The city’s first musical festival, staged in November 1883 at Laurent DeGive’s Marietta Street opera house was Alfredo’s first public, creative challenge in Atlanta— a milestone in Atlanta’s cultural history. It transformed the way Atlanta music lovers conceived serious music concerts. “Nearly every mention of the festival,” Orr said “paraded Barili’s name as the chief helmsman of the whole enterprise.” Three years later he would open the Barili School of Music. When he died 75 years ago unexpectedly while taking a quiet Sunday walk, what more could be said of his artistic achievements? Although his burial site is Westview Cemetery, in the family plot, Barili’s eternal present still lives in the music. 10

CHRISTINA HOFF – FASHIONING FABREFACTION

Photos by Tim Wilkerson

I

n 2006, ShowGuide featured an article about 18-year-old Christina Hoff who started a Theatre Ministry at her church, providing middle-school students with opportunities she’d never been afforded. Now only 23, Christina has seen her dream realized as her Theatre Ministry has evolved into Fabrefaction Theatre Company, a theatre located in Atlanta’s Westside that produces professional non-equity shows as well as training and performance opportunities for aspiring theatre artists in grades 1-12. While studying at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School through NYU, Christina invited fellow students to Atlanta with the goal of producing a summer season with shows for student and professional actors alike. The next few summers the group performed as many as 6 plays a season in a warehouse turned performance space in the Westside. The company members hailed from universities across the country and brought creative diversity to the devoted group with Christina at the artistic helm. In 2007 the group decided to become a non-profit organization and chose the name Fabrefaction Theatre Company. Fabrefaction is a lost word meaning “the act of fashioning or making a work of art”. “We chose the name Fabrefaction because it suited us,” said Christina. “Like the word, our company is eccentric, unique, and complex, but, ultimately, once you understand who we are and what we do, unforgettable.” To say that Fabrefaction is a multi-faceted organization would be an understatement. The company has produced 22 plays to date and will produce 15 shows as part of their inaugural full year season in their new theatre complex located in the heart of the Westside Arts District. In addition to the Professional Season, FTC offers a number of educational opportunities continuing the mission Christina started during the Theatre Ministry. This season Fabrefaction will present a wide variety of work ranging from popular musicals such as RENT in December to reimagined classics, such as Chekhov’s The Seagull in May. Christina says: “Similar to Jonathan Larson’s vision for the characters in RENT, FTC is building a community, one that we hope will continue to grow and inspire collaboration in Atlanta for years to come.” Visit us at www.fabrefaction.org. 12
