THE ARTISTRY OF Master Sculptor
Elliott Hubbard: Filling in the Gaps By Mary Hubbard After his first exhibit and auction at age 19, Elliott was honored to have paintings exhibited at the Albany Museum of Art, Albany, Georgia, in the American Painting Gallery, during 1991. This marked an exciting and deciding time for Hubbard. During and after the exhibition he became a local celebrity and realized that his talent of creating artwork was an avenue to become established in the pursue his passion for creating artwork as a means to make a living. Wanting to expose himself around various types of artists and art galleries, Hubbard relocated to Atlanta in the mid-nineties. While working odd jobs such as working at a local millwork company and building fine custom cabinets in his garage, Hubbard also did hand-drawn portraits and hand- painted tiles to supplement his income. “There even was a time; I delivered news papers to make additional income while I worked towards becoming a self-sufficient artist. Also, during this time, Elliott married his hometown, sweetheart, Mary, an they began their young family. Art commission jobs were not so plentiful so during the late 1990’s, Hubbard was introduced to the world of art festivals. This was an area in which he would try, but was very nervous and unsure of the outcome. Believing in that the only way to succeed is to try, Hubbard stepped into this new venture and he and his artwork was overwhelmingly accepted. “People were excited to see my creations,” says Hubbard. He states that he has met a lot of wonderful people, developed some close friendships and has formed a small following. Several museums in the US have added Hubbard’s artwork to their collections and some of his earlier pieces can be viewed in Albany Municipal Court House, Albany, Georgia. “Some of my most avid collectors have collected my creations aggressively over the years”, says Hubbard, “Some of them will keep in touch and request to be the first to view a new creation.” Hubbard says that he is always humbled and amazed at such requests. Hubbard has donated his artwork to several community service organization and groups over the years to help others. “Although it’s not as much and as often as I like, I know it is right to give back and to help those less fortunate,” says Hubbard. The future holds many dreams and ambitions for Hubbard. “I’m working now on setting up my own art gallery. I would like my artwork to be viewed by people all over the world and most importantly, I would love the opportunity to continue to create while spending quality time with my family and friends,” says Hubbard. “I just love to make you Smile !!!” Contact Elliott at www.ElliottHubbard.com, elliott@elliotthubbard.com, or (770) 969-5951. 4

CREATIVE PROCESS: NBAF
y artistic process begins with a single idea that is inspired by an artist’s work, a relevant cultural milestone or a cultural trend. It becomes the primary thread carried through artistic programming, education, marketing and digital production for each summer Festival. Festival 2012, for example, will examine the Caribbean and its relationship to North America, Europe and Africa. The initial idea formed as a result of Jamaica celebrating its 50th Anniversary of Independence from Great Britain in 2012—a relevant cultural milestone. The idea moves to concept through my “walk with it” phase. Walking with it allows time for research and lets the idea marinate. I find that people and resources appear during this period as well. A great example of this occurred in December 2010 during a trip to Senegal for the World Festival of Black Arts and Culture. I took notes on my flight from Atlanta to New York laying out a plan with Bob Marley as the 2012 Legend. When I arrived at JFK for my connecting flight I was both surprised and delighted to see that I would be sharing a flight to Africa with Bob Marley’s son, Ky-Mani Marley. We spoke briefly about my desire to honor his father. He was very open and enthusiastic. As of this writing Ky-Mani Marley will not only participate in the 2012 Legends Celebration honoring his father, but he will serve as Co-Curator! Once I have a solid vision of how I see the artistic components unfolding I present the concept to my colleagues and request feedback. We discuss how the concept develops in education, with corporate sponsors, how it is marketed and how it is produced. I also have discussions with a diverse group of colleagues in the field, scholars, artists and producers to ensure that I am aware of what is happening around the world as it pertains to the concept. As the concept becomes concrete it shifts into a curatorial plan which is executed by developing the schedule, traveling to meet with artists and see work, identify staffing, developing digital content, etc. Additionally, I work closely with each department to ensure that the curatorial vision is understood and clearly articulated in related materials, proposals and programming. My process begins with a single idea wrapped in the mission of NBAF: to engage, cultivate and educate diverse audiences about the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and provide opportunities for artistic and creative expression. 6

ore than 20 metro Atlanta arts organizations of varying sizes and disciplines have launched a unique collaborative campaign to increase interest in the region’s arts community and change the psyche of Atlanta to one that recognizes its vibrancy. In essence, the organizations are pooling resources to create visibility through billboards, radio campaigns and print media that would be otherwise impossible on smaller budgets. The campaign is spearheaded by AtlantaPlanIt.com, a service of Public Broadcasting Atlanta. “Arts organizations are experiencing new and unique funding challenges,” says Nicole Jones, Editor of Atlanta PlanIt. “Weak public funding, combined with a decline in attendance, loss of corporate gifts, a decrease in local media coverage, and sentiments of ‘there’s nothing to do in Atlanta,’ make it necessary for each organization to find unique ways to minimize costs while maximizing impact. This collaboration is working to shirk those sentiments.” The National Association of State Arts Agencies Report states that while Georgia ranks 11th per capita for the total number of creative industry businesses and 4th per capita for total number of creative industry employees, the state ranks 47th for total state funding allocated to cultural groups in Georgia. “Local arts organizations need increased support to continue to grow and thrive. Our hope is that this campaign will remind Atlantans just how crucial the arts are to the vitality of the city and energize them to support the arts in their community,” says Jones. Participating Organizations: Atlanta Radio Theatre Company, Arts at Emory, Michael C. Carlos Museum, Theatrical Outfit, True Colors Theatre Company, High Museum of Art, The Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Center for Puppetry Arts, Georgia State University School of Music, Atlanta Shakespeare Company, Rialto Center for the Arts, ArtWorks! Gwinnett, NBAF (National Black Arts Festival), Atlanta Lyric Theatre, Flux Projects, Ferst Center for the Arts, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, Atlanta Celebrates Photography, The Georgia Ballet, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, WonderRoot, Horizon Theatre Company.

Lee Harper named a 2002 Lexus Leader of the Arts. 32 Years of Teaching and Performing in Atlanta
The final collaboration of Rodgers & Hammerstein has become the world’s most beloved musical. When a young nun is too high-spirited for the convent, she is sent to serve as governess for seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her generous spirit and rapport with the children, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Returning from their honeymoon they discover Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate naval service. The family’s narrow escape into Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides a thrilling finale that inspires all who see it. A perfect show to enjoy with the whole family!

Where will your child go and how will he get there? The Society of Mary founded Marist School more than 100 years ago to provide an education quite unlike any other. Our faculty and curriculum inspire excellence in all of our students. Beyond the classroom, we offer a comprehensive array of extra-curricular activities to pique students’ interests and uncover their hidden talents. Through it all, we instill a sense of personal responsibility, foster spiritual growth, and teach the joy of serving others. Learn more about what Marist has to offer. Please visit marist.com or call Jim Byrne, director of admissions and financial aid at 770-936-2214. Help your child prepare for his or her future—no matter where it leads.
