Paying Tribute to the Beauty of Dance Through Acclaimed Photography

Photos of Gwinnett Ballet Theatre, 2013 Production, The Nutcracker, Photo by Richard Calmes

By Holley Calmes

I

t all started in Atlanta. Ten years ago, Richard Calmes was asked to photograph dancers for Gwinnett Ballet Theatre’s publicity efforts as a favor to the company. And something just “clicked,” no pun intended. In the decade that followed, he has become one of the most highly touted dance photographers in the world. He has enjoyed over 25 national and international dance and photography magazine covers, 40 million visitors to his web site since 2006, and has over 8,000 friends and followers on Facebook. He is a much sought after lecturer at photographic organizations and photography schools, and he has had dozens of interviews about dance, art and photography on numerous internet blogs and sites. Undoubtably, his work has touched people who love dance or simply love beauty. Dance is an art form which can be seen as unapproachable or unattainable to the average person. Calmes’ work obviously bridges the emotional gap between these two worlds, one reason for the popularity of his images. The past year has been especially rewarding. In February, he enjoyed an Alvin Ailey sponsored 4

company shoot at the Fox Theatre which had him photographing these famous dancers within the Fox’s beautiful architecture and in an additional studio shoot. May saw 20 of his images mounted at the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, NY in a solo exhibition by invitation. His resume also contains a special Paul Taylor company shoot and numerous Regional Dance America Festivals since 2006. He was featured in the New York Times for his work at the North Carolina School of the Arts with Ethan Steiffel. Yet Calmes’ philosophy continues to be focused on the everyday dancer, as he believes that beauty lives and thrives everywhere, not just in the major art meccas. He does not usually charge for his work. He considers his art to be a collaboration between the dancers and himself. “Photographing these beautiful artists is a privilege for me,” he says as he enters the second decade of his dance photography journey.

RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER RETURNS TO CENTER FOR PUPPETRY ARTS

H

e’s back, Atlanta the famed, brightnosed reindeer is set to once again light up the stage at Center for Puppetry Arts! Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™, one of the world’s most beloved tales of the holiday season, will return to the Center’s Mainstage Theater, continuing one of Atlanta’s fondest holiday traditions. From November 13 to December 28, this all-puppet rendition, adapted and directed by the Center’s Artistic Director Jon Ludwig, is sure to speak to the misfit in audiences of all ages! This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Center’s production of the favorite holiday adventure, as well as the 50th anniversary of the classic TV special. “I saw the first TV broadcast in 1964 and thought they had created it just for me. Here they were showing a couple of misfits making it through the world. I felt, ‘There are other misfits like me. I’m not alone!’” reflected Jon Ludwig, the Center’s Artistic Director. He continued, “I have always loved

this story. Apparently, there are a lot of others who love it too, but that makes sense as the story is about Rudolph and Hermey finding their place in the world, and realizing that everyone has a purpose. That’s what the holidays are about: family and community.” New this year, the production will tie in with the national #ShineBright social media campaign, which is a celebration of uniqueness that will be championed by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign, led by the National Bullying Prevention Center, unites the Center for Puppetry Arts with and other nationwide partners, who are using the Rudolph story as a platform for teaching important lessons about diversity and tolerance. To find out more about the Center for Puppetry Arts production of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™, please visit www.puppet.org or call the Ticket Sales Office at 404-873-3391.

ATLANTA BALLET’S NUTCRACKER

perform this signature piece thanks to Atlanta Ballet’s then associate artistic director Robert Barnett, who had danced with Balanchine at New York City Ballet. “We gave it as a gift,” says Barnett, “inviting children from all counties to come in and see the performance. It was a gift from Mr. Balanchine, and he never charged us a cent for doing it.” From that day forward, Nutcracker has been an annual event in Atlanta. In 1995, Atlanta Ballet’s third and current artistic director, John McFall, created a brand new Nutcracker for the city of Atlanta. McFall’s vision was to create a Nutcracker that was “traditional yet new, familiar yet different, classic yet contemporary and above all, magical.” Every year since then McFall has added a special touch to the production in an effort to keep it vibrant and fresh. Tickets for Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker start as low as $20 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 855-ATLTIXX, in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office and the Atlanta Ballet Box Office, or online at www.atlantaballet.com.

tlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker returns to the Fox Theatre Dec. 11 – 28 with the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and the Georgia Youth Choir live for all 20 performances. Set in the elaborate Moorish décor of the historic Fox Theatre, this unique production of the beloved Nutcracker tale takes 20 pounds of snow, eight tons of scenery, lighting, and props, and a 38-foot-tall Christmas tree to make the magic of Marya’s unbelievable story come to life. Now in its 55th production, Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker continues to be a treasured holiday tradition shared by multiple generations. Each year, Atlanta Ballet invites more than 200 Atlanta area school children to perform alongside 23 professional company members and four company apprentices in this holiday spectacular. Atlanta Ballet first brought Nutcracker to the stage in 1959, performing George Balanchine’s version of the timeless tale. In that year, Atlanta Ballet was the only company outside of New York City Ballet allowed to 10

CELTIC CHRISTMAS — MUSIC, DANCE AND THE SOUL OF THE SEASON

I

t’s a very “Celtic thing”... to celebrate warmth and joy at the coldest, darkest time of year. A generation of Atlantans have been doing just that for over two decades at Atlanta’s Celtic Christmas, as Scottish, Irish, Welsh and Appalachian music and dance are magically woven together with poetry, humor and tales of the season. Now in its third year of production at Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for the Arts, Celtic Christmas had its beginnings at Emory University’s Glenn Memorial Auditorium in 1990. Producer and director John Maschinot credits an amazingly talented cast and crew with its success. This year’s guest artists include John Doyle, Ireland’s favorite singer and guitarist. He’s blazed the way for a generation of Irish guitarists with his powerfully rhythmic, jazz influenced guitar work, and sings a treasure of beautiful songs learned from a lifetime of music. Scottish fiddle master Jamie Laval, referred to as “One of North America’s finest practitioners of traditional Scottish music” often moves an audience to its feet with his impeccably crafted, driving tunes. And humorist/ fiddler/mandolinist/percussionist extraordinaire “Jolly Joe” Craven never fails to delight with his over-the-top antics!

At the heart of Atlanta’s Celtic Christmas are the host of performers who are the pride of the region: Leah Calvert, Bluegrass inspired fiddle and soulful singing; The Buddy O’Reilly Band, featuring the haunting sound of the Irish uilleann pipes and the beautiful vocals of Lisa Edwards; The Rosin Sisters and Whit Connah, sweet harmonies from the Southern Appalachian mountain tradition; Kelly Stewart, a rare performer on the unique Welsh triple harp and Celtic harp, flatfoot clogger Jesse “Dynamite” Edgerton, Scottish Highland dance, Highland pipes and drums, Irish step dance, and the actors of Arís Theatre company. December 20 at 8:00 p.m. and December 21 at 3:00 pm. Rialto Center for the Arts, Georgia State University. Half price seating for children 14 and younger. Free, convenient parking is available. AFRICA UMOJA

CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF FREEDOM IN SOUTH AFRICA

T

raveling on the beats of drums, from the dusty streets of Soweto to all the corners of the world’s best and biggest stages, AFRICA UMOJA — which in Zulu means ‘together’ — tells the history of indigenous South African music and dance from the earliest rhythms to the current club sounds of Kwaito. The story colorfully dances through the vibrant backstreets of the “Sheebeens” and the cultural melting-pot of Sophiatown. It is a historical journey through South African history using the African traditions of storytelling, drum talk, dance, singing performed by South Africa’s most talented entertainers. It’s explosive. It’s colorful. It’s soulful and it’s emotional. The journey begins with powerful rhythms of intricate Zulu drumming, dances and vibrant costumes. The walk beyond time delves into the changes South Africans endured through Apartheid and continues to the fight for freedom documented through “Long Road to Freedom” the emotional song written in tribute for Nelson Mandela. The song is beautifully performed to gripping visuals of Mandela’s arrest, his life in prison to his release in 1990.

Africa Umoja was written by childhood friends and performers Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni while touring with the musical Ipi Ntombi. They spent spare moments choreographing and designing the costumes. The company went through many changes including the name. Just before it was named Africa Umoja, it was Baobab. Boabab was inspired by their longtime friend and fellow artist Hugh Masekela. Who told them, “ ...every time I see you, you are stronger than before! Like the tree, the Baobab, always growing and getting stronger even though it grows in the toughest soil.” Todd and Thembi changed the name to reflect their mission to empower underprivileged youths and expand their opportunities. To date, Africa Umoja has performed for international audiences. Their vision of helping South African youths live their dream manifests each time the musical tours. Last year, many had an opportunity to perform in the United States with Africa Umoja. This year, they return and are honored to be the official USA representatives for South Africa’s celebration of 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy! 20

Š2014 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times.

Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Introducing the Porsche Macan Turbo. A 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 that achieves 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan Turbo is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

The new 2015 Macan Turbo.
