“T
Theatrical Outfit Treats Theatre-Goers to a Season of Beauty
his is a season about the role of beauty in human existence,” says Theatrical Outfit Artistic Director Tom Key. The venerable Atlanta arts organization anticipates a Holiday offering and three more plays in their 2018-2019 Season. Key was inspired by a quote from Kahlil Gibran to name the 2018-2019 collection of plays “The Season of Beauty.” The quote said: “We live only for beauty, all else is waiting”. Key explains, “To examine this theme of encounters with beauty is extremely valuable and timely.” For the Holidays, theatregoers are treated to a trip to Pemberly, the vast estate of Pride and Prejudice’s Mr. Darcy, where the Bennet sisters celebrate the season and shy sister Mary finds love. “Mary Bennet is certainly the kind of charismatic person who seems to have been born about two hundred years too early,” says Key. “We rally to her 21st century consciousness and witness how the battles she fought then still must be fought today. This has to do with something deeper and more significant than her personality or temperament. It’s her character.” “Jane Austen achieved a classic story because she made a certain family of people in a certain situation so clearly and vividly real that centuries later, on another continent, we
see ourselves in her stories and long to know what happens to them next. If Austen’s characters lives have meaning, then we are hopeful that so do ours and that, in the end, Austen’s vision of humanity is still true — we belong to each other.” The remainder of the season focuses on Visual Art (The Pitmen Painters,) Food (I Love to Eat,) and the beauty of friendship (Five Guys Named Moe.) “The story of The Pitmen Painters touches on so many things that are important today about class, culture, economics and the place of art in a free society. There’s a lot more involved in the dying of an industry than just retraining workers in another field,” says Key. I Love to Eat is about the great chef James Beard. Key explains, “Good food is part of every sacred ritual, whether we come to grieve or to celebrate. Underneath his jolly television personality is a profound inner joy that we learn was won and maintained with inspiring personal goodness.” The Season ends with Five Guys Named Moe, celebrating musician Louis Jordan who helped launch rock and roll. “I don’t know how Jordan did it, but I’m glad he did, and I bet our audiences, 70 years later, will happily dance out in agreement with him: it’s good to be alive.”

The Nutcracker: Bringing People Together, Both On and Off Stage
T
he Nutcracker season is among us and I eagerly anticipate the upcoming weekends attending over a dozen Nutcracker ballets performed in the Atlanta area. This is a time to see old friends, meet new ones, and enjoy the best that the holiday season has to offer. Amongst the joyful greetings and magical moments is something beautiful: our local artists and performers coming together and supporting each other by sharing experiences, resources, and knowledge. Networking is a crucial part of our healthy and thriving dance community and is one of the reasons Atlanta has become a national hub for the arts. Having been a part of this treasured community for over 40 years, my family and I have witnessed the openness, support, and encouragement that radiates from our city. We see our community, our dance schools, our studio owners, and local dance instructors coming together to share stages, share theatres and share wisdom. I have had the joy of seeing these exchanges happen for over 40 years, and have seen what grand, awe-inspiring and beautiful artistic work comes from the power of togetherness. I am truly thankful to our local dance scene, as it has led me to meet incredible artists, performers and people along the way. I congratulate and thank our local performers for their hard work this season, and I look forward to seeing them live on stage. I am proud to be a part of this very uplifting, strong, and thriving community. I congratulate and thank you — the artists, performers, directors, stage hands, audience members and all involved — for your support to each other and our dance community. at the world we live in right now. Falsettos is as funny and touching a musical as has ever been written, movingly looking at what it means to form your own kind of family. Steve Yockey’s play Reykjavík is sexy, mysterious and ultimately has huge emotional payoff — I have described it as Steve Yockey at his absolute Yockiest. And I believe Charly Evon Simpson is a major new voice in American playwriting. It’s so exciting to be presenting her beautiful, beautiful play Jump.” Fan favorite Libby Whittemore returns to the Express stage for the 10th year for two engagements of her popular cabaret series Libby’s at the Express. New Leadership Rings in a New Season for Alabama Shakespeare Festival L to R: Rick Dildine and Todd Schmidt
T
he Alabama Shakespeare Festival, in beautiful and historic Montgomery, Alabama, has embarked on an ambitious New Festival Season — the first under the leadership of new Artistic Director Rick Dildine and Executive Director Todd Schmidt — with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved The Sound of Music on the Festival Stage and The Gospel of Luke on the Octagon Stage this November and December. In January and February, ASF features two plays about the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham by playwright Christina Ham. The first play is called Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963 and looks at the event through the eyes of four little girls who had dreams of what they were going to become when they grew up. At the same time on the Octagon Stage, Nina Simone: Four Women looks at the same event through the eyes of Nina Simone using the entire Nina Simone song canon. From March through May, ASF will have up to six productions in repertory, including William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Our Town, Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias, and a new comedy called Into the Breeches about smalltown Southern women in 1942 who keep the community theatre running while the men are off at war. There will also be a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It mounted in the
Shakespeare Garden in mid-April, as well as special family matinees of Winnie-the-Pooh on weekends through March and April. After a summer hiatus, the festival returns in September with Hamlet by William Shakespeare and Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw, both performed by Bedlam Theater Company out of New York City. The season culminates with the world premiere of a new play called Buzz, written by Susan Ferrara and directed by Emmy Award-winner Carrie Preston. In addition to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Montgomery is home to the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice along with many notable U.S. Civil Rights Trail attractions, and has been nationally ranked as a top tourist destination by the New York Times and USA Today. A
s Atlanta Dance Theatre enters our 37th season, I want to take our standards to the next level and challenge our dancers with becoming better artists, honing their technique and pushing their boundaries on stage. Becoming a true artist starts with daily routine. It’s my mission to teach these young artists how to succeed in their daily commitments and balance their lives inside and outside the studio. Our season starts with visions of sugar plums in the timeless tradition of The Nutcracker. I’m very excited about this year’s group of gifted dancers and the young energy they’ll bring to the stage. In the production, they’ll be complimented by the high caliber, professional guest artists Jonah Hooper, Nick Hagelin, Lonnie Davis, Robert Chabot, Erick Jackson, Eric Nash and Katherine Ricardo. “For to have faith is to have wings.” – JM Barrie Peter Pan! Yes, spring of 2019 we’ll present Peter Pan at the new City Springs theater. This is my favorite story and I could talk about it forever! So much magic, action and PIRATES! This will by my 6th staging of this magical
production and I’m so excited to stage it with ADT! I think everyone connects with this story on some level. If not, come to this show and you’ll fall in love with this story all over again. Who doesn’t like to fly? ADT will also attend and perform at the Southeastern Regional Ballet Festival in May 2019. ADT is a regional Honor Company, the highest mark a company can achieve. Dancers will take master classes and audition for colleges and summer programs with some of the best dancers and teachers in the country. “It’s not all about you!” – Shelley Grames As a director, it’s equally important to teach this generation the importance of giving back and reaching out into the community. We live in a self-absorbed society. It’s not always about us. I promise my students, if you put others first, you’ll live a full life, one full of love! Our platforms throughout the year are Furkids, Toys for Tots, and our Bashing Boundaries program that gives the gift of movement to those with special needs.

Learning that it is never too late to change, Scrooge is overwhelmed by the joy of Christmas and desire to spread kindness to his fellow human beings. The production entitled “Fusion from Africa to Hip-Hop” began as a national college tour from 1993 to 1996. Terrie Ajile Axam and dancers from Total Dance Company performed in over 100 colleges and universities. A lot has changed since that time. The tour production is now an African-American holiday tradition performed each year as part of Dancical Productions Kwanzaa Celebration. “Girl Why You Dance Like That?” is the new title. The story remains the same. It is an exciting production with 20 performers showing the influence of African drumming and dance as it relates to the lives of African Americans and Americans. dancicalproductions.com
