T
he Fox Theatre was originally conceived as home for the Atlanta Shriners Organization in 1928. Created to befit the group’s prominent social status, it was designed to resemble an ancient temple with intricate patterns. In 1929, the Fox Theatre was leased to William Fox and soon became one of the southeast’s most popular and striking movie palaces — opening on Christmas Day to a sold-out crowd, premiering “Steamboat Willie.” When suburban migration began in the late 1960s and left the future of the beloved landmark uncertain, the Fox Theatre closed its doors in 1974 – seemingly forever. In fear of losing the beautiful theater for good, the Atlanta community united to launch the now memorable “Save The Fox” campaign — collecting donations from public and private groups, organizing benefit concerts featuring acts from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Liberace, and even collecting pennies at local businesses — raising more than $3 million. After months of painstaking restoration efforts, the Fox Theatre again opened its doors in 1975 to the joy of those who pulled it from the brink of disaster. Since then, the Fox has continued
to evolve, firmly sewn into the fabric of Atlanta and remaining one of the city’s most cherished landmarks. The Fox Theatre Institute (FTI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historic theaters, recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary by raising over $100,000 at the “Revival” benefit concert on September 13, 2019. To date, FTI has given more than $1 million to historic venues throughout the region. The Fox Theatre invites the community to reflect on and celebrate its heritage by visiting bit.ly/IAmTheFox to share their own favorite Fox memories. The site also features videos with poetic scripts that tell the story of the theatre’s personality and history, highlighting the story of the individual along with elements of the Fox’s identity — including magic, tradition, glamour and grit. “The Fox is a vessel of many, many stories — stories behind its history and how it was built, stories with every individual and every couple that walks through its doors,” said President and CEO Allan Vella. “We are celebrating by bringing the community a way to embrace its impact over the years. It’s our way to show Atlanta that this cherished theater is not only irreplaceable… it’s theirs.”

“Seeking the inherent motivation and intention within human movement, our work is truly a creative journey,”
graduate of both University of Houston and University of Arizona, Schroeder began CORE Dance in Houston and expanded to Atlanta in 1985 when a friend offered a studio in Decatur. CORE has operated in both cities ever since, with Schroeder a welcoming beacon for dancers and artists wanting to dig deeper, exploring movement in all its possibilities. CORE evolved into a force for creative movement with programs that include and yet go beyond classes and performances. Film, movement research, outreach and conversations which include input from the public are included. As Schroeder explains, “Innovation in dance arises from constantly investigating and experimenting with what’s possible with human bodies in motion.” “We may spend months investigating how to wordlessly express a single human impulse; we are always seeking ways to stimulate movement possibilities beyond one’s comfort zone.” This search utilizes programs for dancers such as DIG, a summer intensive for professionals. “DIG allows art-makers from around the world to tune their creative voice and gain tools in technique, methodologies for movement invention, composition and performance studies,” says Schroeder. “CoreoLab” is a resource for individual artists to take creative risks and support innovative ideas that redefine artistic
says CORE Dance Artistic Director Sue Schroeder as the innovative, multi-dimensional contemporary dance organization celebrates its 40th season. boundaries. “Movement is researched and explored without the expectation of producing work for performance or stage.” “Our work is process based,” says Schroeder. “The end product is not the principal focus.” In Atlanta, 40 years of devotion to dance have resulted in an array of other performances here and abroad, plus additional programs for dancers and the public. The current world health situation might disrupt scheduling for the near future. (Check www.coredance.org for details.) Dance classes in multiple disciplines are scheduled weekly. Artists of all types share ideas through the program “Fieldwork,” and the public is invited to share in “Lunchtime at the Studio.” “Salon” incubates creative ideas, and youth are reached through “Dynamic X-Change” and “Teens Activate.” Input from the public is welcomed in several of these programs, allowing the average citizen in Atlanta to take part in CORE’S mission. “Art activates empathy,” says Schroeder. “We are catalysts for re-envisioning the future. And truly, NOW, we must recreate ourselves in every aspect of society. We all embody a creative spirit. Artists can facilitate the awakening of this spirit in others as we re-imagine what comes next.”

T
he Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus and the Atlanta Women’s Chorus want to entertain you, lift your spirits, involve you in dialogue about issues affecting our community and join with you to make our community more vibrant, diverse, loving and accepting for all our citizens. We hope to create a diverse community united by our music. That’s a tall order but we tackle it with each of the groups three season subscription concerts, multiple community engagements and our outreach performances. Both groups rehearsed virtually during the COVID-19 shelter at home period. It’s quite a challenge to sing together when you are not in the company of your fellow musicians! It speaks to the camaraderie of both groups that members called in, rehearsed on their own, listened to music tracks to learn the notes and worked hard to maintain their internal community and spirit while preparing for the fall concerts! As a result of the cancellation of our June shows, we are very excited to sing for you in September! The singers of the women’s chorus are working a tribute to the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. This concert will spark gratitude and
wonder at the foresight and bravery of the suffragettes who pushed to gain women the vote! The music is rousing, uplifting and at times poignant. This concert promises to be a look back at the way things were 100 years ago as well as cause pause to consider how much more work there is yet to be done. The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus is working on music to lift your spirits after social distancing, face masks, and handwashing! The men of the chorus will shine through with music to inspire, entertain and uplift with “We Need A Little Light.” Both groups are dedicated to living out mission — to inspire dialogue and drive social equity through artistic excellence. Come join us in creating community. The women perform on September 12 and the men’s show is September 26. For more information about concerts and auditions visit us at: www.voicesofnote.org

t Oglethorpe, it’s all about the experience — for our students and our audiences. Our premier venue, the Conant Performing Arts Center, stages student theatre productions and music performances, plus a line-up of professional guest performances throughout the year. Oglethorpe University students perform with both innovative spirit and deference to the classics; each year, students strive to bring a new sense of creativity to the stage. Past theatre productions include A Servant of Two Masters, Spring Awakening, Urinetown, Much Ado About Nothing, and Cabaret. Recently, the Oglethorpe University Singers appeared in TNT’s “Shaq Life,” performing an original piece, “I Want to Fly,” co-written by Oglethorpe’s own Dr. Tim Powell. With so much great talent in store, Oglethorpe students look forward to getting back on the stage and welcoming the incoming class of theatre and music scholars. Oglethorpe University has long taken advantage of its proximity to world-class theatre and arts. Among those to take the stage on campus are the Georgia Ensemble Theatre, Horizon Theatre Company, Capitol City Opera and the Atlanta Concert Opera.
Oglethorpe previously partnered with the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre, which staged two productions on campus, including their run of Shakespeare in Love. Among the professionals in the cast, three Oglethorpe students appeared as well. Be sure to follow Oglethorpe arts on social media to stay up to date with show announcements; a special theatre announcement will be coming this summer! The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, a mainstay of the Brookhaven arts community, will host several exhibitions in the coming months. The juried exhibition, Southeastern Pastel Society’s 19th International Exhibition, hosted by OUMA, will be accessible online, starting May 8. From July 10 through September 27, “Color of Chagall and his Contemporaries,” will feature more than a dozen rarely-exhibited original oils by Chagall, Renoir, Pissarro and others. With a growing permanent collection, a series of exhibitions and occasional concerts, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art is a small, accessible destination with world class art. The Rialto Center for the Arts Looks Forward to the “New Normal” By Darlene Hamilton
T
he Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University has stood at the corner of Luckie and Forsyth for over 100 years, surviving many devastating adversities. The Rialto opened in 1916, the same year as the polio epidemic in the U.S. and stood through its peak in 1952. We stood during the Spanish Flu of 1918, Diphtheria from 1921 to 1925, and the Asian flu of 1957. We also narrowly escaped fire damage to our theater in 1920. Through all these challenging times, the Rialto survived because of the resilience of the human spirit, the continued support of our beloved community and the hope and encouragement the arts provide during difficult times. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to stand steadfast. Like many organizations, we have found new ways to engage our audience during the long days of quarantine. During Georgia’s shelter in place orders, we introduced weekly Rialto Replays on social media every Wednesday, featuring full Rialto Series performances from our stage by Lisa Fischer, Off the EDGE Dance
Festival, The Nile Project and more, as archived by GSU-TV. We are also presenting performances by local and emerging artists via social media. With the newness of spring, we look forward to the “new normal” as it evolves after this latest crisis. We continue to explore ways to bring audiences back to the Rialto with safety being paramount, while offering the highest quality live performances that our audiences expect from us. To that end, we are developing our 2020-2021 season around the theme of Mastery. The Rialto Center’s executive director, Lee Foster, explains the season’s theme, stating, “We believe that mastery is where precision and expression meet, constituting the very pinnacle of artistic and professional excellence. This belief is one of our core values and inspires the framework for our new season.” We stand ready to welcome you to the Rialto and offer the healing power of hope that the arts provide. Of course, we will continue our efforts to ensure the health and safety of all. For more information on all Rialto activities, visit rialto.gsu.edu.

Out Front Theatre Company
Brings a Dazzling 2020/21 Season to Stage
O
ut Front Theatre Company, the beloved and award-winning LGBTQIA+ theatre company of Atlanta, has announced its upcoming 2020/2021 season. With a book by Douglas Carter Beane, with music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, the Tony Award-nominated, hilarious, roller skating, musical adventure Xanadu follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time — the first ROLLER DISCO! In the Georgia Premiere of Judy’s Scary Little Christmas, Judy Garland is primed for her biggest comeback ever — the dazzling star of her own TV special, broadcast live on Christmas Eve, 1959. The evening takes a detour into the twilight zone as Judy’s all-star guests are forced to confront the lies behind their legends. The show features a book by James Webber and David Church, with music and Lyrics by Joe Patrick Ward. The Pink Unicorn, by Elise Forier, is an award-winning solo theatre piece, which tells the often times funny story of Trisha, a Christian widow, living in a conservative Texas town, whose life is thrown into turmoil when her teenaged daughter announces she is “gender queer” and starting a chapter of the Gay and Straight Alliance at the local high school. Harrison David Rivers’ This Bitter Earth focuses on a deep love that is challenged by divisive political realities. Jesse, an
introspective black playwright, finds his choices called into question when his boyfriend, Neil, a white Black Lives Matter activist, calls him out for his political apathy. But the human heart can hold complex and often contradictory things, and the two men find themselves at a crossroads. In Torch Song, Harvey Firestein explores the life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag queen living in New York City, over the span of the late 1970s and 1980s. All Arnold wants is a husband, a child, and a pair of bunny slippers that fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he needs one thing more: respect. The Show Must Go On (Virtually) and We’ve Got All the Info! During these challenging times, Greater Atlanta’s performing arts community is doing what it does best — inspiring, entertaining and challenging us. Artists, companies and venues have creatively responded to the need to darken our theatres, not by taking the show on the road, but by taking the show to the web. Atlanta ShowGuide remains your source for what has become a fastmoving arts landscape. Please follow and like us on Facebook ( facebook. com/ATLshowguideMagazine and check our website often for the latest news (AtlantaShowGuide.com).
To best serve local arts supporters, Atlanta ShowGuide has teamed up with two exceptional organizations. WABE-FM, Atlanta’s voice of the arts, is broadcasting up-to-date arts info, while atlantaplanit.wabe.org features news, links to performances and classes and arts updates. Please support the arts now with your dollars and later with your presence when theatre doors open again.
