The Atlanta Opera Goes Back Under the Big Tent This Spring ne of the few American companies to perform live for in-person audiences during the COVID-19 pandemic,” The Atlanta Opera has already “demonstrate[d] how imaginative direction can harness COVID restrictions for artistic effect” (Wall Street Journal). After the success of our acclaimed fall offerings, we are thrilled to present an equally innovative spring lineup of live, in-person events, highlighted by the world premiere productions of new adaptations of two iconic operas. Deconstructed to accommodate the needs and nature of the current season, The Threepenny Opera and The Threepenny Carmen are both conceived by Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun as “opera for starved societies.” Together with three live spring concerts, the new adaptations will feature top-tier artists performing for live audiences in The Atlanta Opera’s customized circus tent, now mounted just outside the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. For
those unable to attend in person, all five productions will also be filmed for future release in the company’s new Spotlight Media digital streaming service. As Opera Wire reports, The Atlanta Opera is proving itself “one of the most exciting opera companies in America.” Zvulun explains: “…We’re taking a look at two iconic works from past centuries — Bizet’s Carmen and Weill’s Threepenny Opera — and asking what they mean for us today. These operas tell stories of marginalized characters and a society that is on the brink of starvation. We’ve deconstructed these works and reconstructed them on a smaller scale, one more suited to our current times. Everything has to be scaled down during the pandemic. Audiences are smaller, run-times are shorter and grand operas must be pared down to focus on the essentials. We’re living in a lean, threepenny world right now, so it’s appropriate that we’re paying homage to Kurt Weill and producing threepenny operas that accommodate our present times.” Tickets for the Big Tent Series (sold in both 2- and 4-person socially distanced “pods”) are on sale now at atlantaopera.org or by calling 404-881-8885.

Atlanta Author Pearl Cleage Helps Develop Intergenerational Conversations at the Alliance Theatre By Holley Calmes
W
hat can an 11-year-old do to help make the world a better place? How can a teenager help establish justice in a broken world? An original animated short film and a collaboration of young minds are dealing with these questions, and they also have one thing in common. Both projects are guided and inspired by Atlanta author Pearl Cleage. “The animated short film ‘Sit-In’ was intended to be a live performance,” explains Cleage. “But Covid-19 changed all that, and instead it evolved into something wonderful.” The show became an animated short film that is still streaming on the Alliance’s web site through June 30th. Produced by the Palette Group, the story involves three young friends as they learn about the Civil Rights era and apply this information to issues they face today. Cleage wrote the script based on Andrea Davis Pinkney’s book “SitIn: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down.” “It was an exciting journey,” Cleage says. “I had never written a film script before. It makes you realize how, as an artist, doing something new pushes you.” “We wanted to create a bridge between
the generations. We thought, ‘Let’s give this generation something to be empowered about,’” Cleage says. “Feedback has been wonderful. A question-and-answer session on Zoom showed that children today don’t understand a lot about what happened back then. They want to know ‘How can I help now as an 11-year-old?” Many children’s favorite character is the grandfather who shares his memory of the Civil Rights Era, emphasizing the importance of intergenerational conversations. A slightly older group is also curious about how they can change the world. Cleage will guide the Alliance’s Palefsky Collision Project again this year. 20 teens will spend three weeks exploring a work of art, culminating in a performance on July 31st. This year, they will immerse themselves in Marvin Gaye’s album “What’s Going On.” Teens picked for this diverse group were chosen for their openness and curiosity. “We want them to react to a basic text, and Marvin Gaye’s album sounds like he wrote it yesterday,” Cleage explains. “We will train them to listen to others, not argue. We will knit their thoughts together into a script for a performance. We want to show them how to address issues through art.”

Robert Barnett:
The Dance World’s Ageless Cavalier
I
By Holley Calmes
t is the last class of the day at a regional ballet convention. Robert Barnett teaches a pas de deux class consisting of advanced young students. They are eager and in awe. Barnett imparts technical advice as he partners teenage ballerinas. His manner with the young men is kind, bolstering their confidence. He treats them with the respect he gives everyone. Barnett’s teaching expertise is peerless, but it is only part of his legacy. When asked about his contributions to dance, Barnett, 95, never fails to trade places on the pedestal with those he respects. A celebrated star of the New York City Ballet under George Balanchine and the undisputed energy behind the Atlanta Ballet’s evolution, he still begins and ends his conversations by praising others. Dorothy Alexander, founder of the Atlanta Ballet, was a cherished friend. “Such a special lady. I adored her,” he says.
Bobby Barnett with Virginia Barnett Statue, Photo by Holley Calmes
“Dorothy wanted a professional ballet company in Atlanta, and Bobby made it happen,” explains Cynthia Crain, author of Barnett’s biography “On Stage at the Ballet.” In this role, he had opportunities to implement his many talents, but it is other names that Barnett highlights. Names such as Anne Burton. “She was a special one. A technician, a true artist,” Barnett says. He speaks of other talented dancers he imported to Atlanta, such as Wei Dongsheng and Maniya Barredo, with warmth and affection. There were dancers who became leaders, such as Gil Boggs, now of Colorado Ballet. The introduction of Balanchine’s work broadened Atlanta’s cultural richness. Crain quotes Barnett, “Balanchine once said to me, ‘Bobby, my choreography will disappear once I am gone. I promised, ‘Not while I’m around!’” True to his word, Barnett presented Balanchine masterpieces such as “Serenade” and others to Atlanta audiences. Other dance forms and choreographers were championed by Barnett. “Dorothy called me one day and said, ‘I have this young man here. He wants to be a part of the school,” Barnett explains. “It was Carl Ratcliff.” Supported by Barnett and others, the Carl Ratcliff Modern Dance Theatre was launched, encouraging a new wave of contemporary dance within Atlanta’s arts community. Sharon Story, Atlanta Ballet’s Dean of the Centre for Dance Education expresses a consensus about this Atlanta arts icon: “Robert Barnett is a treasure to us all at Atlanta Ballet and the dance community around the world. His dedication and passion have and continue to guard everyone who has ever worked with him to strive for excellence.”

The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE:
Connecting Choral Singers from Around the Nation and Around the Globe
S
ince its inception more than 30 years ago, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, has provided a unique opportunity to the north metro-Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. MOS recognizes the power vocal music has to connect and heal, and so offers choral opportunities to the community at large by hosting a nonauditioned Summer Singers program and an annual December Messiah Sing-Along. The COVID-19 situation prevents the 140-voice auditioned MOS chorus from effectively gathering and producing inperson choral events. The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE offers a way for choral singers to keep their voices in shape, learn and safely rehearse choral music with a choral “surround sound,” and visit with other singers in real time. Rehearsals and virtual vocal studio lessons are offered weekly via YouTube and are followed by Zoom social sessions for those persons interested in visiting with other singers.
Those MOS ONLINE participants interested in also having a virtual choir experience can choose to participate in an optional ‘virtual audio’ performance. The Summer session of The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE is entitled Songs for a Summer’s Night and the YouTube videos will ‘premiere’ each Monday evening at 8 p.m. EDT from June 21 – July 26 (they can also be viewed any time after each ‘premiere’ showing). There is no registration fee for participation, although donations are gratefully accepted. Singers may enroll from anywhere; MOS ONLINE currently includes participants from 27 states and 11 countries spread over five continents. MOS offers many of its past full-length choral concerts and concert highlights at no charge via its YouTube channel. Visit youtube. com/michaelonealsingers to peruse the selection of choral performances ranging from classical, Irish traditional, Broadway, opera, bluegrass, and more and watch on demand. Cultivating the Spring Seeds
Preparing for a Harvest of Live Concerts!
T
here is no doubt that the pandemic has altered the way performing arts organizations deliver their product. We have seen a new level of innovation and creativity unfold over the past year, and Atlanta Master Chorale has continued to seek new ways to share the transformative power of our music. During this pause in live performance, we have remained connected with our faithful patrons and have also drawn a much broader audience through our virtual programming. Many seeds have been planted as we continued to deliver music that touches spirit — both nationally and globally. Now that there is hope of returning to live concerts in the fall, we are planning for the new season with a guarded optimism. But even with the impending return to stage, Atlanta Master Chorale will continue to cultivate the seeds we have planted through our expanded programming that has further connected us with our friends, patrons and donors. In a normal year, Atlanta Master Chorale is winding down our season, singing a final concert in May and then going silent until the next season’s premiere concert in October. This year, we will continue our virtual programming
through the summer with new YouTube video releases and our Spirited Conversations: Behind the Scores live interview series. We hope you will join us for our next episode on April 19 at noon, featuring Jonathan Easter, Atlanta Master Chorale accompanist and increasingly sought-after collaborative organist/ pianist. Registration is also open for our noon conversations with Mark Lawson, President of ECS Publishing Group/ MorningStar on June 21, Dr. André Thomas on May 10, Tenor Samuel Hagan on July 12, and Dantes Rameau, CEO and cofounder of Atlanta Music Project on August 30. Register and details are available at AtlantaMasterChorale.org. Interviews will be recorded and available on our website. During this unusual year, we have been blessed with an ever-expanding virtual audience. With 1.3 million YouTube views, Atlanta Master Chorale’s performances have now been viewed in all 50 states and in more than 100 countries worldwide, and our subscribers have grown by more than 40 percent. Our generous donors and patrons have fertilized the field, enabling our music to continue to touch spirit during a time when many needed it the most. Stay TUNED for our next season.

The Rialto Center Overcomes Challenges to Celebrate 105 Years with its First Virtual Gala
he Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University opened in 1916 as Atlanta’s first and the southeast’s largest movie theater. This spring the Rialto celebrates its 105-year anniversary with a virtual extravaganza — Live at the Rialto: The Gala. During the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest last spring, it was hardly the time to celebrate. The Rialto, like many organizations, was shuttered. But the Rialto Center, committed to serving local artists and the community even during challenging times, sought new ways to engage audiences beyond the confines of brick and mortar, to serve as a beacon of hope and source of solace. With no budget and reduced staff, the Rialto launched free virtual performances to provide levity during the difficult times. Since last spring, the Rialto has presented 59 free virtual events on a regular basis. Signature programs were livestreamed
including 14 monthly Feed Your Senses lunch and learn performances, and five Live at the Rialto performances featuring Russell Gunn and the Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra, Kevin Bales’ Beyond the Neighborhood: The Music of Fred Rogers, two performances of “Silver Linings” presented by the Atlanta Ballet, and Kathleen Bertrand’s “Sisters In Song”. There were also new offerings — Rialto Replays of five Rialto Series performances, 30 Rialto Homegrown Artists Series performances shared by local artists from their homes. The Rialto partnered with GSUTV to produce five episodes of Crucial Conversations, a televised series of civil, nonpartisan discussions on racial equity and reconciliation. Live at the Rialto: The Gala is a celebration of another year standing at the corner of Luckie and Forsyth Streets, overcoming challenges and looking ahead to the coming season. As its doors remain closed to the public, the Rialto needs the continued support of the community to bridge the gap from spring to fall in hopes of lighting the marquee and opening their doors again. The Gala will feature a nostalgic celebration of the 105-year anniversary, the best of 2019-20 season performances, special interviews and tributes from fans, artists and friends, plus silent and live auctions. For more information call 404-413-9849 or visit The Gala website at BidPal.net/RialtoGala2021.

Theatrical Outfit
Brings You a Smart, Authentic, Vital Spring
S
pring has officially arrived, and with it comes the continuation of Theatrical Outfit’s Spring 2021 Season. After the groundbreaking return of Lauren M. Gunderson to ATL with The Catastrophist, two more amazing productions are in the wings! These exciting plays are all perfectly suited for the digital format and will offer outstanding performances that come to life right in the comfort of your own home. In April, a hit British play, fresh from a West End run, will make its Atlanta debut when A Hundred Words for Snow by Tatty Hennessy blows onto your screen. Matt Torney directs this tender & epic play that follows the story of Rory, a 15-year-old girl who copes with her grief at her father’s passing by running away to spread his ashes across the North Pole. Then in June, we are excited to present the seminal play Fires In The Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn And Other Identities by Anna Deavere Smith. Taken directly from a series of interviews with over 50 members of the Jewish and Black communities following the historic Crown Heights riots, which happened 30 years ago this summer, this timely piece turns their voices into a tour de force one-woman show starring January LaVoy. Fires In The Mirror will STREAM LIVE from Theatrical Outfit for
nine PERFORMANCES ONLY — making it the true not-to-be-missed theatrical event of the season. “I’m thrilled with the response we have gotten for our digital programming so far and am excited to share these exceptional plays with Atlanta audiences this Spring,” says Torney, artistic director. “When putting this season together, we challenged ourselves to look for plays that both engaged directly with the crucial questions of 2021 and the COVID recovery, and also allowed our audience escape into new worlds and explore ideas in fresh and exciting ways.” The Spring will also see the return of our annual gala when Our Luckie Stars Gala takes center stage in May. Join TO this year for a fun evening of homemade cocktails, fabulous auction items, and lots of surprises! TO will honor devoted District 2 Councilmember, Amir R. Farokhi at this event. While we all wait for the opportunity to all be together in a theatre again, Theatrical Outfit promises to continue bringing you smart, authentic, vital digital theatre that starts the conversations that matter. Public Support Leads to Celebrity Judging in Georgia Symphony’s Talent Competition
T
he dancers, instrumentalists and vocalists competing in the Georgia Symphony Orchestra’s Virtual to Center Stage talent competition need support on social media from family, friends and the general public to win. The competition opened for video audition submissions on Feb. 1, 2021, to Georgia residents, ages eight and up, in any musical style. Amateurs through professionals, including solo entrants or groups up to 10, were eligible to enter. “Given the hardships the entertainment industry endured over the past year due to COVID-19, we wanted to provide an opportunity for public recognition to
undiscovered artists,” said GSO Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville. In addition to a live performance opportunity with the GSO in its 2021-22 concert season, the winner(s) also will receive a prize package valued at nearly $1,200. Following an initial round of internal judging, the top-rated contestants’ video audition submissions now move through three rounds of public voting on the GSO’s Facebook and YouTube pages and talent. georgiasymphony.org. The final five contestants will be judged by a panel of talented local performing arts celebrities, including:
Andy Gaines: General manager of the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre.
Shuler Hensley: Award-winning Broadway, OffBroadway, film and TV star, and an integral part of the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards— Shuler Hensley Awards.
Earl Reece: Former executive director of the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre and former director of the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts at Pebblebrook High School.
Jennifer Holloway: Atlanta native and internationally recognized opera singer and actor.
Public voting ends on June 13, 2021. The competition’s winner, runner up and community pick will be announced on June 18, 2021. Atlanta ShowGuide magazine is proud to serve as the competition’s media sponsor. Sponsorship donations benefit the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra program, including its scholarship fund, which provides music education opportunities to students with financial need.
Oral Moses: Internationally recognized bass baritone vocalist and artistic director of The Negro Spiritual, Inc.

Beloved Fairy Tales are Live, On Stage this Spring at the Center for Puppetry Arts
C
enter for Puppetry Arts is celebrating spring with live, in-person performances on and a brand new, more flexible, cost-effective way to experience puppetry. The more all-inclusive family series tickets you buy, the more you save! Beginning April 30 and running through May 9, Little Red rides into the Center with the Big Bad Wolf working double-time in this twisted, tangle of tales in The Big Bad Little Red Pig Show. Lee Bryan, “That Puppet Guy” performs this fast-paced show that “squishes” together two childhood favorites with just one Big Bad Wolf who can really bring down the house. It’s a curly “tale” not to be missed! Then in Pinocchio, running May 14 through May 23, upcycled thrift store finds
get new life in this unique retelling of the most classic puppet tale. You’ll see baskets become crickets, cooking pots become foxes, and a puppet just might turn into real “live” boy. This solo “tour de farce” combines prop comedy, found object puppetry and original sound compositions for a laugh out loud experience perfect for the whole family! Beginning June 16 and running through August 1, The Ugly Duckling follows a young bird who simply doesn’t fit in with the other ducks in the pond. Helped by some friendly forest sprites, the duckling sets out to explore the wonders of the pond. With a beautifully created environment full of hidden musical instruments created by Atlanta Percussionist Klimchak, The Ugly Duckling brings to the stage Andersen’s transformative fable about life’s bumpy road. Reduced-priced previews are available on June 15 and 16. Each all-inclusive ticket includes the performance, admission to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum, and their Create-APuppet Workshop™ where patrons are invited to build, decorate, and perform with their very own puppet. The puppets are based on the characters and style of puppetry in each individual production. Visit the website to purchase your tickets today! The Center is maintaining its dedication to a safe environment for everyone by requiring masks, social distancing, limiting capacity, and frequent cleanings.

Live — onstage, online and on demand — it’s Greater Atlanta’s theatrical offerings! If there’s a silver lining to the past year, it might be the creative and personal ways the performing arts community has responded to the pandemic. When theatres closed, local artists took to the airwaves, internet, outdoors and more to continue to bring the performances Atlanta audiences craved directly to us. Now, as theatres re-open, many performing arts companies have chosen to present a combination of in-person and online productions, extending their reach and engaging arts enthusiasts who prefer to participate remotely. As we have for more than two decades, Atlanta ShowGuide will bring you
the dates, times, places, and now, links to all of Greater Atlanta’s performing arts happenings. We will maintain our online video arts library and partnerships with www.wabe.org, ArtCurrentsATL.com and www.pbs.org/show/atlanta-planit. The curtain is going back up all over town, and also in your own living room. That deserves a standing ovation!
