Season Four Finishes Strong at City Springs Theatre Company!
njoying the tremendous success of its 2021-2022 PNC Season, City Springs Theatre Company (CSTC) will round out its 4th season with The Color Purple and West Side Story. This musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film) spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story. With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple* is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love, and a celebration of life. It premiered at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and opened on Broadway in 2005, where it was nominated for 11 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. The London off-West End production moved to Broadway in 2015, winning the Tony Award® for Best Revival of a Musical.
As relevant today as when it premiered in 1957, West Side Story is widely regarded as among the best musicals ever written. This landmark Broadway musical (with a legendary score by Leonard Bernstein) transports Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, struggling to survive in a world of hate, violence, and prejudice. The play features immortal songs such as “Tonight,” “Something’s Coming,” and “I Feel Pretty.” City Springs Theatre Company, led by executive director, Natalie DeLancey and artistic director, Shuler Hensley, is dedicated to entertaining, educating, and enriching lives by creating world class theatre experiences and innovative arts education that drive cultural richness and economic vitality. In addition to Broadway caliber musicals, City Springs Theatre Company is also the home to a successful Conservatory program. Launched in 2018, it is dedicated to training the next generation of performers and technicians in musical theatre.
*This production contains adult themes. It is recommended for mature audiences.

T
he Atlanta Symphony Orchestra enters a new era with its 2022-2023 season. This fall, Nathalie Stutzmann will command the podium as the ASO’s fifth Music Director, bringing a new dynamic and new energy to the Woodruff Art Center’s Symphony Hall. Stutzmann’s first ASO concerts (October 6, 7 and 9) offer an exciting world premiere: Words for Departure by New England native Hilary Purrington. Following will be Lilacs, the Walt Whitman setting with which George Walker became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. For a celebratory finish, Stutzmann conducts Beethoven’s titanic Ninth Symphony. Stutzmann is a true Renaissance woman. Born in Suresnes, Hauts-de-Seine, France, she studied voice at the L’Ecole d’Art Lyrique of the Paris Opera, beginning her career as an opera singer. The contralto then expanded her influence, becoming a recitalist, a conductor, and an academic teacher. Now she can add a new, historic, title to her resume: becoming the second female music director of a major symphony orchestra in the United States. Her conducting style has been
6
characterized as having both “energy and fantasy,” and Stutzmann hopes to “break down walls” to engage new audiences in Atlanta. “We need to entertain new audiences and make them feel a part of the music instead of just listening. It’s about engagement. I am very inspired by what I see in Atlanta,” she says. “There is a great cultural appetite here, and I look forward to helping feed it.” Collaboration with local arts organizations is important to Stutzmann. “Art makes the lives of people better, and by mixing mediums we can help break down walls to engage new audiences,” says this multi-faceted artist who also loves Ella Fitzgerald, old jazz, big band, folk, and country music. And, she “plays a little golf.” “I have enjoyed my time in Atlanta very much. I love that it is very green. There are trees and flowers everywhere. It’s more of a city in nature. I love going to Piedmont Park and having a walk, or a picnic, and studying my scores.” “I can’t wait to bring new people of every age to see and hear this incredible orchestra,” Stutzmann says. “This is a gem that Atlanta should be very proud of.”

The Atlanta Opera Presents a New Production of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs (excerpt from article writtten by Julia Brown Simmons)
“Y
ou can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking
backward.” Steve Jobs’s concept — the ability to see connections and patterns with clarity only in retrospect — provides a lens through which to understand Mason Bates and Mark Campbell’s GRAMMY-winning opera The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs — an opera which follows the Apple co-founder as he looks back on his life and career and confronts his own mortality. Although this one-act opera centers on the life of Steve Jobs, drawing primarily on real-life figures and events, it has a fictional spin. Rather than focusing on Jobs as the legend and celebrity who revolutionized how people communicate today, the opera explores Jobs as a man who recognizes the human condition, practices Zen Buddhism, and faces his own mortality. With this humanized Jobs at the core of the opera, Bates and Campbell delve into the duality of Steve Jobs — a
man who is high-tech and futuristic as well as meditative and mortal. The music composed by Bates maps perfectly onto the subject of his opera. Mirroring how the opera’s story revolves around Steve Jobs duality, Bates’s music straddles two worlds. Bates combines classical music built upon years of tradition with modern, electronic music. Classical, melodic arias meld with pulsing amplification. Music of the past and present coalesce just as Jobs himself brings together the ancient tenets of Zen with revolutionary technology. By taking isolated moments from Jobs’s life in all his various roles — as business magnate, husband, friend, father, Buddhist, and human — the opera reveals connections, patterns, and meaning. The opera, in Jobs’s own words, allows the audience to connect the dots of Jobs’s life. It allows us to better understand Steve Jobs — both the good and the bad — and perhaps gives us a bit of insight into our own mortality.

S
tarting April 8, Alabama Shakespeare Festival proudly presents the world premiere of writer/director Ricardo Khan’s new play, Freedom Rider. Inspired by real events, the story follows four students in May 1961 as they board a southbound bus in Washington, DC, to challenge segregated spaces in interstate travel. Kahn collaborated with KathleenMcGhee Anderson, Murray Horwitz, Nathan Louis Jackson, and Nikkole Salter. “He picked people from different parts of the country who would bring their own experiences,” Rick Dildine, artistic director, said. “So just like those young people came together that summer, he brought a group of different people together today from different parts of the country to write this play.” ASF has partnered with Montgomery’s Freedom Rides Museum to create an engaging, immersive display at the theatre chronicling the Freedom Riders’ travels. The museum is an official destination on
the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. Opening April 14 on the Octagon Stage, Pulitzer Prize finalist Dael Orlandersmith’s play Until the Flood explores the social uprising in Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting of teenager Michael Brown. Pulling from her extensive interviews with Missouri residents, Orlandersmith wrote a series of monologues to create a stunning theatrical experience. “It is one of the most dynamic pieces of theatre I’ve ever seen, “ said Dildine, “and it is one of the most balanced pieces of theatre that presents a lot of different arguments and points of view in our quest for social justice in this country.” Freedom Rider runs from April 8-24, and Until the Flood runs from April 14-May 1. Tickets start at $25. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit ASF.net or call the ASF Box Office at 334.271.5353. The concert’s theme comes from Benjamin Britten’s “Hymn to St. Cecilia”, dedicated to the patron saint of music. The British poet, W. H. The Michael O’Neal Singers: Engaging, Educating, and Enriching In Person and Online
2021 Concert “It’s the Holiday Season” at Roswell United Methodist Church Photo by Bob Dickens
S
ince its inception 33 years ago, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization has provided a unique opportunity to the north Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. After hosting a year of successful online interactive programs for choral singers, the 125-voice auditioned MOS chorus returned to in-person programming for the 2021-2022 season When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, chorus and choirs all over the world ceased activities. Through its unique online choral experience that included YouTube video rehearsals and real-time Zoom social interaction, MOS filled a void in the lives of many singers as the organization found new and creative ways to fulfill its mission of serving its community through choral music programming. Since May 2020, MOS ONLINE programs have attracted over 1,500 participants worldwide, welcoming singers from 36 states and from 15 countries. Recognizing an ongoing need in the lives of choral musicians who currently can’t access live choral programming, MOS has expanded its programming to encompass distanced singers. Now the in-person and ONLINE choruses of MOS rehearse virtually side-by-side, preparing the same repertoire and experiencing together a culminating concert. The in-person MOS symphonicsized chorus is auditioned; the ONLINE choral
experience is open to all interested singers, whether near or far, seasoned or beginner. This dual choral programming evolved naturally from the community formed by singers in the throes of pandemic isolation, and allows MOS to more fully realize its mission to engage, educate, and enrich lives through choral song This spring, The Michael O’Neal Singers present Soft Rockin’ with MOS, a crowdpleasing program of choral arrangements of favorites from the ‘70s and ‘80s from the likes of the Carpenters, Elton John, ABBA, Chicago, Neil Diamond, and Rod Stewart, among others. Then, in keeping with its commitment to offering a wide spectrum of choral music to its audiences and participants, MOS is offering its 18th annual Community Summer Singers program this summer around the theme of CELEBRATION: Music for Joyous Occasions — a perfect title for what will be MOS’s first in-person summer program in three years! The Michael O’Neal Summer Singers is open to choral singers with no audition required; the program will also be offered online for those singers who desire to participate remotely. For information on MOS’s in-person and ONLINE opportunities, and on how you can be a part of our community of music, visit mosingers.com, call 770.594.7974, or write to mosoffice@mosingers.com.

Atlanta Master Chorale Gears Up for their Season Finale
Why Ballethnic?
The excitement and exhilaration of our concert season continues with our season finale, Immortal Fire on April 29 and 30. The concert title comes from Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, dedicated to the patron saint of music. The British poet, W. H. Auden wrote the extraordinary poem that Britten sets to music, asking the saint to “appear in visions to all musicians,” inspiring them with “immortal fire.” The concert will also feature works by Dan Forrest, Eric Whitacre, Moses Hogan, William Dawson, and our own artistic director, Eric Nelson. Ticket info: AtlantaMasterChorale.org/ concerts.
Students receive intensive training with strong emphasis placed on dance terminology and dance history. Ballethnic offers small classes that provide exposure to all aspects of the performing arts, business aspects of the theater, and career guidance. Students gain performance opportunities through our annual Summer Open House, and apprenticeships are available for advanced dancers.
