ARTISTRY OF MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER Greg Mooney I Shoot, Therefore I am By Greg Mooney
I
am happiest with a camera in my hand, I really don’t like sitting in the office. I started photography as a child at about 6 years old. My parents had been given a 35mm Kodak camera as a wedding present and I wanted to see what made it work. So I took it apart with a hammer and a screwdriver. They weren’t very happy and the camera wasn’t happy, it never worked again, and my parents made certain I wasn’t very happy, but I never stopped doing photography from there. Next time I was allowed to use a camera I was downgraded to a Kodak Instamatic! I was 7 or 8 years old and at dawn a star or a planet, would rise over the horizon each morning for only a few minutes, and it was visible through my bedroom window. So I grabbed the Instamatic, braced it against the window sash to steady it, and shot 2 frames. I thought it was gorgeous and I kept it for years! However to this day my sister will tell you it was a beacon light on a new radio tower… I don’t think so. While in Collage I was asked to photograph the schools new performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Nights Dream”. And it was love at first click! I had to push the B&W film to 3200 ISO, shoot with the fastest lens’s I had, tiptoe in and around chairs and the director. Anticipate actions and moments of emotion onstage and capture all of it, in a Shrek The Musical

single frame. And with this one image, move or convey the audience’s emotions with it. Which is what I do with the Alliance Theatre when I capture their Theatre Stills and Advertising images. A play like “Jesus Christ Superstar: Gospel” was filled with incredibly powerful and emotions scenes for the entire cast. And we the audience know the story, however when the lepers surround Jesus we were able to see their desperation and his tired frustration. And when you capture that frame and record that perfect moment time really does stands still, and you know you have something, sometimes you don’t know how good the image is but you know you got it, you just know. You can go home now, its not going to get any better than that. But I never do stop… For more Greg Mooney go to www. A COURAGEOUS SEASON AT THE OUTFIT by Clifton Guterman
T
heatrical Outfit’s soul-stirring 20152016 Season of Courage will transport audiences around the globe and back in time. Kicking off the thrill-ride is the Tony-winning Memphis, a co-production with Aurora Theatre, following the forbidden love of a white DJ who falls for R&B music and a black singer chasing stardom in the smoky clubs of Tennessee in the 1950s. The Outfit’s leg of Memphis runs September 10-20, 2016 at the Rialto Center downtown. Next, audiences will enter the mind of R. Buckminster Fuller, one of the 20th Century’s brightest visionaries and inventor of the geodesic dome, via a one-man show blending multimedia, poetry and humor. R. Buckminster Fuller: The History (and Mystery) of the Universe stars The Outfit’s luminary leader, Tom Key, and runs at the company’s Balzer Theater downtown October 1-25, 2016. During the holidays, patrons may sail the seas with plucky Sara Crewe as she moves from colonial Africa to Victorian London and relies on her inner-royalty to face adversity. A Little Princess is a spunky family musical full of African music, dance and exotic locales based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel, and it runs at The Balzer Theater December 3-27, 2015. The Outfit then presents Moxie, a world premiere (and Alliance Theatre Reiser Lab winner) written by Outfit Artistic Associates Lane Carlock and Brian Kurlander. As a handmade book journeys across continents, all who touch it contribute to its enchanting and mystical force. Moxie runs January 28-February 21, 2016 at the Balzer Theater. Lastly, audiences will journey deep into the hearts of a Southern mother and daughter vacationing in sunshine-filled Tuscany in 1953 in the romantic musical The
Light in the Piazza. Adapted from the novella by Elizabeth Spencer with a score by Adam Guettel (grandson of composer Richard Rogers), this winner of six Tonys masterfully illuminates themes of sacrifice, destiny and the effervescence of first love. The Light in the Piazza runs April 14-May 15, 2016 at the Balzer Theater. From Tony-winning musicals to a oneman show to a family-friendly holiday piece to a world premiere, Theatrical Outfit’s Season of Courage 2015-2016 truly offers something for everyone. Exploring Atlanta’s Public Art By Kimberly Harbrecht, AtlantaPlanIt.com

t’s easy to miss a mural on the side of a building or a sculpture on a street corner when you’re driving along Atlanta’s busy streets, but public art is one of Atlanta’s not-tobe-missed hidden gems. Over the past year, AtlantaPlanIt.com has mapped public art throughout the city, from modern murals to historic sculptures. Now available in the Atlanta PlanIt app, the map pinpoints the locations of these murals, sculptures and installations that give this city character. But before you explore by foot, bike or car, take a moment to read up on the various art. Murals are one of the most recognizable pieces of public art in Atlanta thanks to programs like Living Walls, which brings in artists from around the world to create murals

throughout the city. To date, they’ve worked with nearly 100 artists to create approximately 100 murals. But Atlanta’s murals go beyond official programs and artist commissions. The Krog Street Tunnel is arguably the area’s best known place for street art. Graffiti and street artists alike use it as a canvas, albeit illegally, to showcase their work or make a statement about current events. This keeps the art constantly in flux, so each drive through is a different experience.
Much of Atlanta’s public art also has strong ties with the land’s history. Art on the BeltLine builds upon the area’s railway corridor past with the Eastside Trail installation “Railroad Workers,” which uses discarded railroad parts from the BeltLine itself. And at Atlantic Station, one of the original smokestacks from the Atlantic Steel mill is permanently displayed in Foundry Park. Public art can also be interactive and can encourage a hands-on experience from passers-by.“Rockspinner” is a 22,000-pound boulder mounted on a spinning platform at the corner of 10th and Peachtree streets, and “Musical Playscapes” at Coan Park puts a musical twist on a children’s playground. Atlanta has hundreds more pieces of public art to discover. So next time you’re stuck in traffic or biking the BeltLine, take a look around to see what art may be nearby. Want more? Audition with the Award-Winning Atlanta Master Chorale By Jamie Clements
Each member of Atlanta Master Chorale brings a wealth of experience, both musical and professional, to the stage, resulting in a wonderfully well-rounded rehearsal and performance experience. The Chorale roster includes teachers, attorneys, engineers, scientists, business people, students and stayat-home parents, and sees many members staying in the organization for over a decade. With most performances either at capacity or near sell-out in the beautiful 740-seat Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, there are few community choirs in the country that offer such a professional singing experience for its volunteer singers. The organization works overtime to ensure its singers enjoy the Atlanta Master Chorale experience as much as our remarkable audience. Long thought to be a rigorous rehearsal and performance season, the Chorale’s schedule has been honed over the last three decades to include only weekly Tuesday night rehearsals from late August through May, and five main concerts occurring in October, December, January, March, and May. Our singers have some of the most demanding professions in Atlanta, but each finds the consolidated schedule both rewarding and workable with their busy lives. Auditions for the 15-16 Season are scheduled for August 11 & 13 at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. For more information on auditions, send an email of inquiry to info@AtlantaMasterChorale. org, or fill out the form on our website: www. AtlantaMasterChorale.org

N THE 30 years since its humble beginnings, the Atlanta Master Chorale has performed hundreds of concerts in and around the Southeast, becoming a standout in the crowded Atlanta choir scene. Winning back-to-back national awards for performing excellence and board governance from Chorus America and Board Source in the last two seasons, the 50-member choir is now setting its sights on even higher standards for concerts, recordings and community engagement. Atlanta Master Chorale’s 15-16 Season includes music from around the globe, holiday classics, masterful works by Martin and Palestrina, and an incredibly bold community partnership with the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center to present a concert completely devoted to awareness and research advocacy for one of life’s most devastating diseases.

ArtsBridge Foundation:
Creating the Future Through Arts Education
S
tudies have proven that early exposure to the arts can improve academic achievement while enhancing test scores, social skills, critical thinking and problem-solving. Arts programs motivate students to learn, excite young minds, bridge cultural barriers and most importantly, give students a chance to explore their talents and abilities. ArtsBridge Foundation, the arts education outreach arm of Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, provides quality arts education programs designed to engage, motivate and elevate the next generation of artists and arts supporters, filling a critical need many schools no longer provide. Since 2007, more than 280,000 students and educators from 30 counties in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina have experienced the arts through ArtsBridge programs. Built in collaboration with leading national arts organizations, ArtsBridge offers Field Trips to Cobb Energy Centre, exposing students to high-quality, educational performances. This past season, over 22,000 students from 200 schools attended performances by the Atlanta Ballet, The Atlanta Opera, Kennesaw State University’s College of the Arts and Peking Acrobats, to name a few. In April of each year, ArtsBridge produces
the Georgia High School Musical Theater Awards — The Shuler Hensley Awards, named after Tony Award winning performer, Shuler Hensley. Patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the adjudicated event celebrates excellence in high school musical theater. Last year, 50 schools representing 21 Georgia counties competed for the coveted awards. The eighth annual Shuler Awards will take place on April 21, 2016. Paving the way for students to experience, learn and benefit from the positive power of the arts, ArtsBridge offers Master Classes and Educational Experiences, focusing on skill and talent development. “As a former student of the arts, I know, first-hand how early introduction to the arts can promote teamwork, discipline and a strong work ethic in children from Pre-K through college,” said Natalie Barrow, director of arts education and community outreach for the Foundation. ArtsBridge believes all students deserve access to the arts, regardless of their ability to pay. “Adopt-A-School”, a newly developed financial aid program funded by donors, provides admission and transportation subsidies to students and schools in need. NATIONAL BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL Presents 27th Season and Shines Spotlight on Dance
T
his summer, the National Black Arts Festival (NBAF) continues its 27-year tradition of offering stellar artistic and educational programs in music, dance, film, visual arts, theater and literary arts and of attracting audiences and participants from the region and around the world to Atlanta. The season launches in mid-July with programming through mid-September that spotlights dance and the dancers, choreographers and dance companies — the luminaries and trailblazers — who shaped and defined the discipline. “NBAF has an extraordinary cultural legacy that we continue to build on,” said executive director Grace C. Stanislaus, who assumed the helm in October 2014.“What’s new is that we’ve evolved over the years into a three-month season with incredible activities and programs taking place throughout the city.” The NBAF lineup this summer includes exciting dance performances and workshops from established talents such as Savion Glover, Step Afrika! and Ronald K. Brown. There will be a new commissioned work by The Manzari Brothers, the young tapping duo who are protégés of Maurice Hines; a Gallery Hop melding visual arts and dance into a seamless experience; a film series titled “Representing Us: Black Dance in Film” and a day-
long symposium focused on dance across the African Diaspora. Additionally, NBAF partners with Youth Speaks to welcome the 18th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival. The new direction and format of spotlighting one discipline and offering an extended program season was initiated in early 2014, and this year’s program season was developed in concert with dance and film historians, scholars and practitioners within and outside of the region. As in the past, partnerships, alliances and engagement with a broad base of cultural and educational organizations has been key. “We’re deeply appreciative of the partnership with Professor Thomas F. DeFrantz, a scholar, artist and author on Black dance and Chair of the African and African American Studies department at Duke University, who worked closely with me in shaping the program season and has organized an incredible symposium on dance that is seminal to the field,” said Stanislaus. For the past 27 years, NBAF has led the way in presenting and celebrating worldclass artists from within and outside of Atlanta and in nurturing the creativity of children at every age. This summer, NBAF continues its tradition to educate, enrich and entertain!
