THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER QUILTER

RAY BARRERAS

his issues featured artist is Ray Barreras, a quilter, who started quilting in 1990 when left alone for the summer. Self taught he made a few quilt tops then he took his first lesson and learned all the things he had done wrong. Since that time he has had many classes and relishes all sorts of techniques to get the final top finished! Ray is currently the President Elect of the Georgia Quilt Council, he was also president in 1997. The council is a gathering of almost 60 guilds from around the state. It furthers the art of quilting and stressing the art as well as the craft of the quilt. There are many guilds with shows to publicize their work two such shows are on exhibit now one at the DeKalb Historical Society old courthouse, open M-F 10am-4pm. The show will run through the summer and into the fall. The second show is: Quilting Green: RePurpose, ReCycle & ReUse — A Quilt Exhibition Presented by Ebony Stitchers; July 22 26, 2010; Opening Night Reception July 22, @ 7pm; Porter Sanford Performing Art and Community Center; 3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur, Ga. 30032; For More Information: www. ebonystitchersquiltguild.org; Facebook: Ebony Stitchers; Email: ebonystitchers1@bellsouth.net. The quilts chosen for this feature show the range of interest that Ray finds as inspiration. Trudie’s Trees is based on some paintings that Ray s wife, Trudie, did on hand dyed fabric. Each was then sashed and finally quilted by an excellent long arm quilter, Regina Carter, from Jackson, GA. Oriental and African inspirations are also visible in the two quilts featuring those two themes. Ray and Trudie raised five children and have eight grandchildren. Ray has these and other relatives to give his quilts to. Besides painting on fabric Trudie also specializes in water color, pastel and acrylic. If you want any more information about quilting or about the Georgia Quilt Coucil please contact Ray. His e-mail is rbarreras@bellsouth.

CREATIVE PROCESS

GUT BUCKET BLUES BRINGS DAVID BELL BACK TO ATLANTA

by Jennifer Dwyer enny Leon and True Colors Theatre Company will open their 2010-2011 season with a world premiere blues musical, based on the life of Bessie Smith. But there is an added gift in this production… Gut Bucket Blues brings former Alliance Theatre Associate Artistic Director, David Bell back to Atlanta. We took a moment to ask David a few questions about his upcoming premiere. What you are most looking forward to coming back to work in Atlanta? “I look forward most to being around old friends with Kenny Leon on the top of that list. He has been a constant source of inspiration and friendship in my life for 20 years. LaParee Young, Daniel May, Brad Sherril, Ritchie Crownfield, Chris Keyser, Chaundra Currelley. Tom Key and dozens more are among my favorite actors that I have ever worked with in my life. There is a heart to the acting community in Atlanta that I deeply miss in my travels elsewhere. What was the most exciting part of the writing process during Gut Bucket Blues? “GUT BUCKET BLUES – THE BESSIE SMITH MUSICAL was a thrill to write because of the outspoken, shameless, unapologetic and shocking nature of Bessie herself—she was a dynamo, a force of nature and someone who I learned to really admire. She was a hard living, foul talking, brilliantly talented artist—who honestly just did not give a damn how she was perceived. Bessie did what she liked—and I think she actually liked being notorious—she liked shocking folk, maybe, she was daring the world to cross her and if it did—she would barrel right over it. I have learned to love her for her guts and courage as much as her talent.” What was the most challenging part of the writing process during Gut Bucket Blues? “The writing process was a joy—I was teaching full time and directing A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM—but I had done my research last summer and was ready to go. I would get up between 5:00 and 6:00 in the morning, write for 6 hours, teach all afternoon and direct each evening until 10:00 and then repeat the process every day for 2 months. It was thrilling, and I have rarely felt more productive in my life. I am honestly, very proud of how the show has turned out and I cannot wait to share it with True Colors and Atlanta.” How does it feel to be premiering the work in Atlanta? “I have been lucky enough to premiere several works in Atlanta during the decade I was Kenny’s associate at the Alliance—my adaptations of THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, CHESS and THE LEGEND OF PECOS BILL to name a few. I found the Atlanta audiences very receptive to the presentation of new material and great audiences for new works. I love that I am coming back to do a show that I have written.” Gut Bucket Blues runs October 3 – November 7, 2010 @ Balzer Theatre @ Herrens. SHOWGUIDE COMPANY PROFILE

GYPSY THEATRE COMPANY:

CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED, AWARD-WINNING

lot has happened for Gypsy Theatre Company since it was formed just over two years ago. The founding members, Mercury and Danielle Gustaveson, met in the theatre, fell in love, founded Gypsy and were also recently married. Their company also started off with a bang. Their first production coincided with the same day the tornado touched down in Atlanta—on the Ides of March, 2008—and it has been a non-stop whirlwind ever since. Whether producing original work or an American classic, Gypsy Theatre deftly trims the fat off a production until it is a sleek and winning thoroughbred of a good time. To revel and be lost in a story, to think or see things in a way you’ve not before, to be amazed, befuddled, or laugh until it hurts, or cry because you must, are all the end results of quality theatre. And Gypsy Theatre Company definitely brings that to the fore. Between Mercury and Danielle, 45+ years of experience come together to whisk you away into the story of the day. And after all, isn’t that why we go to the theatre, to be taken away? Mercury has 25+ years under his belt (20 spent in New York City honing his skills), while Danielle brings 20+ years of an artistic background in painting and design. But of course, their hearts belong to the stage. Combining the talents of local and professional actors to delight audiences from children to senior citizens, a Gypsy show is always a memorable one. Theatre is about your community. Whether that community is the town, state, or country where you live—the community of beliefs you cherish, or to a greater community you aspire to be part of—we all have commonalities. Things in common. Community. And we all can find something that touches our hearts in the community of the arts. And the arts are alive and well within the heart of Gypsy. Although performing predominantly at The Cumming Playhouse in Cumming, Georgia, true to their name, Gypsy Theatre Company traipses across the state of Georgia bringing distinctive, high caliber entertainment into the hearts of all. RICHARD GARNER AND GEORGIA

SHAKESPEARE… 25 YEARS AND COUNTING by Jenny Constantino

n 1986, three friends and an inspired university president thought it would be fun to pitch a tent, learn some lines, invite some friends and see what happens. None thought during that first hot, mosquito-and-airplaneinterrupted summer that their 2-play season would morph over 25 years into year-round diversified programming, a sophisticated and successful education program, and, oh yes, all in an air-conditioned, 550-seat performing arts center. Least of all, Richard Garner. Georgia Shakespeare Festival was born. “We thought we’d all have a great time—and we did! We didn’t expect more than 6,000 people to show up, picnic on the lawn and come back again and again—it still mystifies me sometimes,” says Garner. “And in the blink of an eye, a quarter century has gone by.” Back then, Richard Garner saw the opportunity to do a couple things. First, he saw a way to make Shakespeare accessible to a community quite lacking in the niche, and craving it. Secondly, there existed a troupe of actors whom he could employ, nurture and lead. And he saw the opportunity to create education and intern programs that would introduce Shakespeare to the next generation. Summer 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the institution we know as Georgia Shakespeare. And Richard Garner remains at the helm. Much has changed, but much has remained the same. Shakespeare is at the heart of what the company does, but sometimes in a different way. It was critical to Garner to make the Bard accessible, not intimidating, yet true. “We’re not your Grandparents’ Shakespeare,” he laughs. “We want to provide a comfortable entry point to this work, while still honoring the words. With shows like Shrew: the Musical, a singing and dancing extravaganza set in 1930s Miami—I think we’re hitting that one on the head.” Year-round programming offers the opportunity to do work outside the Shakespeare canon and this anniversary season holds some surprises. Garner is kicking off a 10-year program of producing company-generated works with The Odyssey: a Journey Home in October. And over the holidays, they’ll produce A Christmas Story, with Ralphie, his air-rifle, and all. And those actors? Garner did employ, nurture and lead them, and they, in turn, invested in him and the Company. Today, there are Associate Artists clocking in for their 18th, 20th and 21st seasons. They are passing down to today’s interns what they’ve learned since they joined the company—many as interns, too. Richard Garner pitched that tent and never looked back. Atlanta is all the better for it. Georgia Shakespeare is the Professional Theater in Residence at Oglethorpe University, and is located at 4484 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30319. Visit www. gashakespeare.org or call 404-264-0020 for more information. 12

Sideways Contemporary Dance Company Presenting Social and Political Opinion

Founded as a not-for-profit organization in 2006 by Charlotte Foster, SIDEWAYS was created to inspire change and present social and political opinions through dance. Through performances across the Southeast, SIDEWAYS repertory has received impressive feedback from dance choreographers: Ann Reinking (Fosse – the musical), Steve Rooks (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre), Wendy Perron (Dance Magazine), and Mia Michaels (So You Think You Can Dance). Recently, SIDEWAYS repertory show, COEXIST, was selected from dance companies throughout the region to perform at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston. COEXIST explores the multitude of relationships that exist in society, and aims to inspire audience members to enhance their relationships with those around them. The show is comprised of a series of athletic contemporary dance pieces that take the audience on an emotional journey through crisis, grief, acceptance, and ultimately, triumph. Dancers examine relationships using group dynamics, partnering, and emotive choreography by SIDEWAYS Artistic Director Charlotte Foster. Although the subject matter is complex, SIDEWAYS performances will not stump the audience. “We believe contemporary dance should be accessible to everyone, and we strive to create work that people will connect with,” said Foster. Those who watch the popular TV show So You Think You Can Dance will be familiar with style of the company. SIDEWAYS latest full-length work, POP!, explores society’s obsession with fame, greed, and power. “We explore social themes that engage our audiences and make them question their perspectives,” said Foster. POP! looks at current popular culture in magazines, movies, tv, books, and music, and asks the audience to examine what information they consume on a daily basis. The effects of pop culture are far-reaching, and POP! aims to raise awareness about what messages are out there and how they are being interpreted. POP! will be performed in Atlanta at 7 Stages Theater July 9, 10, and 11. Tickets are $18-$25 and are available at www.sidewaysdance.org.
