The Atlanta Opera Returns to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre for 2021-22 with Programming Embracing Optimism, Inspiration, and Escapism

fter a year of innovative, imaginative, and acclaimed performances under the Big Tent, The Atlanta Opera celebrates its triumphant return to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre with a season of escapist mainstage productions. “The tent gave us the opportunity to take incredible artistic risks. We really had a chance to break rules, experiment, innovate, and let our creativity take us to new places,” said Tomer Zvulun, the Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General and Artistic Director at The Atlanta Opera. “We have emerged from the 2020-21 season with incredible momentum and excitement for what we can do in the future. It is now time for us to harness the innovations we created during the pandemic, toward the most uplifting season in recent memory.” The company will return to Cobb Energy Centre in November with four colorful, uplifting productions. The Mainstage season features Handel’s Julius Caesar, never before staged by The Atlanta Opera, plus Rossini’s beloved The Barber of Seville, the rollicking return of The Pirates of Penzance, and the Southeastern premiere of Grammy award-winning The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs.

The Discoveries series will also be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, at least two of the innovations necessitated by the pandemic prove their staying power: The Big Tent series will continue the momentum of the current season in the fall while easing audiences back into the indoor venue, and the company’s commitment to streaming opera productions is now a permanent feature of its operations. Not only will select mainstage and Discoveries productions be filmed, but digital-only shorts and features will also be created, with all the new content streamed on the Spotlight Media platform. Far from languishing during the challenges of the past year, The Atlanta Opera emphatically rose and continues to rise to the occasion, only reinforcing its reputation as “one of the most exciting opera companies in America” (Opera Wire). At the same time, health and safety remains a priority for The Atlanta Opera. The company will continue to rely on the advice and direction of its health and safety team led by Emory University’s Dr. Carlos del Rio in setting those standards for each production.

Sculptor Basil Watson Celebrates the Human Form in both Heroic and Everyday Poses By Holley Calmes

asil Watson’s workplace on Hurricane Shoals Road in Lawrenceville overflows with images of historic, heroic and everyday people. These sculptures are so filled with life that they appear ready to leap off their pedestals and get on with their day. Studies of the heroic such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Muhammed Ali, and John Lewis share space with a multitude of human figures brimming with energy and personality. Watson is Jamaican-born. Now a Gwinnett resident, he was in the national spotlight last January 14th when his 12’ sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King was installed in downtown Atlanta. Watson recently produced a bust of another historic African American Atlantan, John Lewis. He was able to meet and work with Lewis to create the piece before the statesman passed away. The bust has “gotten good reviews so far,” Watson says. Among the depictions of prominent leaders and Olympic athletes in Watson’s studio are dozens of sculptures of the female form in a wide range of poses. They are not celebrities, public figures, or sportsmen — just “people.” “My passion, the central part of my work

are female nudes,” Watsons says. He sculpts and draws the female form in a true-to-life manner, not looking for perfection but for “an appreciation of the individual.” “My female nudes are not perfect figures,” he says. “They are psychological studies. I don’t start with that intent, but it seeps and then floods into the work. I encourage each model to be themselves. Once you allow ‘who they are’ to come to the fore, they are relaxed, and their personality comes out. That’s when it becomes art.” These figures are almost all “Rubenesque” in size. “We need to get past letting society promote only one body type as the standard,” he says. With all the emphasis on sculpture, Watson has a different “favorite” art form. “I go to drawing for the peace it gives me,” he says. “As you draw, it teaches you secret lessons about life that are not obvious at the beginning. The Rialto Center is Ready to Light Up the Marquee and Open Its Doors Again

fter being shuttered for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rialto Center is ready to launch its new season! While awaiting the opportunity to welcome audiences back to the venue, the Rialto found new ways to engage audiences, serve as a beacon of hope in the community and provide levity during the difficult times. With no budget and reduced staff, the Rialto launched a full schedule of free virtual programming, presenting 59 virtual events. Since last spring, the Rialto presented free, virtual events including Feed Your Senses monthly lunch and learn series and Live at the Rialto performances by Russell Gunn and the Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra, the Atlanta Ballet’s two-part “Silver Linings”, and Kathleen Bertrand’s “Sisters in Song”. New virtual programs were created as well, specifically Rialto Replays of Rialto Series performances, the Rialto Homegrown Artists Series self-recorded performances by local artists. The Rialto teamed up with Georgia State University colleagues, GSUTV and Creative Media Industries Institute, to produce six episodes of Crucial

Conversations, a televised series of civil, nonpartisan, discussions on racial equity and reconciliation, that had been in development by the Rialto since 2019. The fifth episode of this ground-breaking series, Crucial Conversations: Burial Grounds, won three 2021 Telly awards for Public Interest/ Awareness, Editing and Social Impact. In a nostalgic celebration of the Rialto’s 105th anniversary at the corner of Luckie and Forsyth Streets, overcoming challenges and looking ahead to the coming season, the Rialto presented the Live at the Rialto: The Gala fundraiser. The community stepped up to help the shuttered venue to bridge the gap from spring to fall. Now, with safety protocols in place, the Rialto is ready to light up the marquee and open its doors again! This fall the Rialto will present the 2021-2022 season of Mastery — the pinnacle of artistic and professional excellence where precision and expression converge. In its 10th Year, the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival Sets the World Stage for U.S. Based Artists

n March 5, 1945, a poor black domestic from Cuthbert, Georgia, became the only woman ever executed in Georgia’s electric chair. Lena Mae Baker’s “crime” was killing her white employer and long-time sexual abuser in self-defense. Atlanta-based playwright, Dr. Janice Liddell has written a play that gives a voice to this extraordinary figure in American history; and her voice is being heard all over the world. The Lexington Players (TLP), a Massachusetts-based theatre company, recently presented a virtual production of Janice Liddell’s critically acclaimed play, Who Will Sing for Lena? at the 2020 virtual Atlanta Black Theatre Festival (ABTF). TLP was then invited to represent the U.S.A. at the 2021 Mondial du Theatre in Monaco, this summer in August. “Dr. Liddell introduced us to ‘Lena’ in 2016. We were blown away by her story,” says Toni Simmons Henson, Producing Director of the ABTF. “When we heard the play was selected to represent the U.S.A. in Monaco, we wanted to do everything possible and our platform to support this on the world stage.” The ABTF, in collaboration with Third Eye Productions and TLP, presented an encore virtual performance as a fundraiser to

offset travel expenses to Monaco this past March during World Theatre Day weekend. The play has been presented by several theatre companies garnering 17 awards including the coveted Best Documentary at United Solo Theatre Festival (NYC, 2016) and Best Play at the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival in 2016 and again in 2020. “This is just one example of our reach beyond borders. We have a partnership with the National Theatre of Ghana and are currently in talks with producers from Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Canada to forge relationships that will support more artistic exchanges beyond our borders,” says Henson. “Our history doesn’t begin with US slavery. Our trans-Atlantic journey has deposited remnants of people in places all over the world. And because of technology, people across the African diaspora are eager to restore what was lost,” Henson continues, “There’s an awakening happening. We must tell our stories, reveal the truth of our history, and celebrate our resiliency as a culture.” Donations are being accepted on behalf of TLP at AtlantaBTF.org/give. am proud to be part of an artistic, cultural legacy rooted in service to the community. My identity was shaped, in large part, by witnessing how my family engaged with each other, the people in our community, and the world. Growing up in Atlanta, I was taught that it was my job and responsibility to continue to a legacy of excellence, to honor those who came before me, and to work to make the world better than I found it. My mother, Terrie Ajile Axam, is one of six children born to George and Dorimell Axam in Atlanta. She was a member of the first class of students that allowed women at Princeton University. During her time at Princeton, my mother started an African based dance company called the Ajile dancers. The group served as a cultural and community outlet for students of color and was the beginning of my mother’s explorations with African dance and modern movement that would lead to her creation of an original dance technique, Mojah. I have witnessed and experienced my mother work diligently as an independent

artist. As an educator, she impacted generations of students, some of whom she fed, clothed, housed and supported like her own children. Most profound, perhaps, is my mother’s impact on me. This familial and personal history is the foundation of my professional work and explorations. After earning a dual degree (JD/MPA) from Georgia State University, I moved with my family to State College, PA and began my career as a Professor of Theatre and Dance. For the past 18 years, I’ve learned, taught, and performed nationally and abroad, working to bring dance and cultural arts to Penn State University and the broader community. Now, as a dancer/educator in my own right, I partner and collaborate with my mother in expanding and presenting the Mojah dance form in Atlanta and venues nationally and abroad. I stand proudly on the foundation before me and embrace the excitement and challenge of continuing the legacy of dance, arts, and service to the community, passed from my mother to me.

What a difference a concert-less year can make

hat a year it has been! Around this time last year, Atlanta Master Chorale realized our 2020-21 season would not take place. As we stood on the shore of the unknown, we took determined action to remain relevant and connected to our patrons. Our Virtual Concert Hall provided opportunities to share our music and insights into the choral world. Collaboration with partners like ShowGuide helped us to further expand our audience and discover new avenues to reach people during a challenging time. Looking back over the year, we are amazed by the number of new friends and supporters that became part of our family. It is with this renewed spirit and energy that Atlanta Master Chorale announces our plans for the 2021-22 Concert Season. Our season kicks off October 15 and 16 with “This Amazing Day”, followed by three performances of “Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale” in early December. One of the season’s highlights will surely be our January concert when world-renowned mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton joins the Chorale for the Duruflé Requiem and other selections. Our March 11 and 12 concerts will feature a commissioned worldpremiere by Jake Runestad, “The Ways of

Stars”, dedicated to the life and work of astronomer, Maria Mitchell, along with other “heavenly” music. It promises to be a spectacular evening. We conclude with “Immortal Fire” on April 29 and 30, featuring Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia. The Michael O’Neal Singers: Getting Voices in Shape for the Return to In-Person Singing

ince its inception 32 years ago, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, has provided a unique opportunity to the north metro-Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence, both in person and online. After hosting a year of successful online interactive programs for choral singers, the 140-voice auditioned MOS chorus will return to in-person programming this August. In preparation, MOS is hosting Choral Boot Camp, an online choral and community experience designed to help get singers’ voices in shape for the return to in-person choral singing. Six weekly sessions provide participants the opportunity to rehearse the music and then sing well-known choral selections with pre-recorded performances by The Michael O’Neal Singers, while learning and practicing techniques to improve breath control, expand range, overcome hoarseness, and relax the voice (among others). Choral Boot Camp activities ‘premiere’ each Monday evening at 8 p.m. EDT from June 21 – July 26 (they can also be viewed any time after each ‘premiere’ showing) and are

followed by optional live Zoom socials for those persons interested in visiting with other singers. There is no registration fee for participation, although donations are gratefully accepted. Singers may enroll from anywhere; MOS ONLINE currently includes participants from 28 states and eleven countries spread over five continents. Jennie T. Anderson Theatre Restarts with Indoor and Outdoor Concerts

n the last year, the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre and Cobb County PARKS tested the waters on several safe and sociallydistanced events. They’ve had their hand in virtual programming, outdoor and drive-in style shows, and even indoor streaming events. They’re trying the best they can to continue their work, for their community, integrity, and livelihoods. Their musicals-in-concert series was announced in 2019. The Jennie T. Anderson Theatre was able to pull off one production, Guys and Dolls, prior to the pandemic. The remainder of their season, titled The Overture Series, was canceled or postponed. Due to the scope of the series, it could not be revisited until COVID risks began to lower. With a county-approved safety plan in place and the help of a generous medical facility that offered to provide early vaccinations to Anderson Theatre actors, musicians, creative teams, and their home bubbles, The Overture Series is back!

The first streaming concert of the season, Once on This Island, aired April 29-May 2. Filmed nearly back-to-back, the second concert, Nine, was available for streaming June 3-6. Chess, Sunday in the Park with George, and White Christmas fills out the remainder of the season and will perform live with limited-seating at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. Also programmed concurrently, the Cobb PARKS’ Drive-In Concert Series will perform each month all summer. Due to the success of the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre’s Drive-In Cabarets last summer, the outdoor concerts have been expanded to a full summer line-up. Each drive-in concert will perform on the Cobb PARKS mobile stage in the Cobb Civic Center parking lot and will have one performance at 7:30 p.m. on one Saturday out of the month. “It’s been a long pandemic, but we’re ready to sink our teeth into performances again,” says Jono Davis, the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre’s managing director. “Safety is still our priority and there are many precautions in place. Theatrical Outfit Announces a Return to the Stage

fter more than a year away from live theatre, Theatrical Outfit is excited to announce a return to the stage. For the 2021-2022 Season, audiences will once again be welcomed back into the Balzer Theater to experience smart, authentic, vital in-person theatre. With five gripping Mainstage productions and the continuations of Made In Atlanta, Graham Martin Unexpected Play Festival, and The Welcome Table, the 2021-2022 Season at Theatrical Outfit will bring powerful live theatre back to the heart of Downtown Atlanta. “We want to offer Theatrical Outfit as a space to reconnect with one another, and to process the challenging experiences we’ve lived through as a community during the pandemic,” says Artistic Director Matt Torney. “As we considered plays for the season, we looked for stories that resonated with these complicated times, and also celebrated the extraordinary diversity of our city and the amazing artists who call Atlanta home. From timeless tales of war and resilience to contemporary stories that tackle pressing issues, these plays will explore important questions as we heal and rebuild.” First, Torney will make his Theatrical Outfit live directing debut with An Iliad by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare, Based On Homer’s The Iliad, translated by Robert Fagles (September 15 – October 10, 2021). This stunningly theatrical adaptation of Homer’s epic poem takes us back to Troy

and explores the tragedy of war and the heroism and resilience of the human spirit. In time for the holidays, the previously announced Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery by Ken Ludwig will make its Atlanta debut one year later than planned (November 17 – December 19, 2021). With 5 actors playing 40 roles, this hilarious whodunit is a madcap theatrical treat for those aged 5 to 95. The year 2022 will begin with the brilliantly emotional Bright Half Life by Tanya Barfield (February 2 – 27, 2022). This innovatively structured play tells the story of over 40 years in the relationship of a lesbian couple and explores the timeless and universal power of love. Next in line is The Wolf at the End of the Block by Ike Holter (March 30 – April 24, 2022). This hit play is equal parts thriller, dark comedy, and complex social commentary that will keep you talking for weeks after you experience it. Concluding the season is the return of one of Theatrical Outfit’s biggest hits — Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill by Lanie Robertson (June 1 – 26, 2022). Broadway’s Terry Burrell will once again become Billie Holiday as the Balzer Theater transforms into a 1950s Philadelphia jazz bar, creating a night worthy of the late icon who wove the tragic experiences of her life into stunningly beautiful music.
