THE ARTISTRY OF Master Photographer

Sandy Ellis: Documenting the World I have always loved photography. For as long as I can remember I had a camera in my hand starting with my Kodak Brownie. It excites me to view the world through the lens of a camera. I especially like using a telephoto lens to zoom in on an object that is far away or close in on the tiny drop of water hanging on a flower in the early morning dew. In the 1970s I got a degree in Journalism at the University of Georgia. During that time I took photography classes and fell in love with photography. I spent hours in the dark room developing my own black and white photos. I had found my passion! As much as I loved photography I found it difficult to make a living with it so I went back to school and became a teacher. Teaching consumed my life and I had to put photography on hold. I retired from teaching in May 2010 and immediately dove back into photography. After I retired I took a digital photography class so I could brush up on the technical aspect of it. In the fall of 2010 I entered three photographs Tiny Drop of Water in the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation Small Works show and they all got in! I sold two of them. This really got me inspired to continue on this path. Since then I have had photographs in three more OCAF shows and one in the Athens Lyndon House show. I am shooting all digital now and love enhancing my photos in Photoshop. I don’t think I will ever stop learning new things in digital photography. Most of my photography consists of landscapes and still subjects. Early morning is my favorite time to get out with my camera. It’s all about the light and capturing it just right. When I travel I always get up for the sunrise because it is the best time Reflections to capture the beauty of a place. I view the world through my camera lens. It inspires me and brings great satisfaction in my life. Contact information: sanderellis@gmail.com, www.flickr.com/photos/ellis33. 4

CREATIVE PROCESS: LEE HARPER

A Mentor to MAny, including JAsMine guy By: Julie herron Carson When we consider the tremendous contributions dancer, choreographer and teacher Lee Harper continues to make to Atlanta, it’s tempting to only look backwards. After all, so far, she has given the city over three decades of performances, along with a successful dance school where she has trained generations of students. But to fully appreciate Miss Harper’s ongoing impact, we need to look forward to the successes of her students who have incorporated the technical skills and life lessons Miss Harper has taught them into their own creative endeavors. One of Miss Harper’s best-known former students is Broadway actor, singer and dancer Jasmine Guy. Now the Producing Director of True Colors Theatre in Atlanta, Miss Guy achieved national stardom playing the role of Whitley Gilbert on TV’s A Different World. Miss Guy grew up in Atlanta and studied dance with Miss Harper at Northside School of the Performing Arts. She later studied and performed with the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York before launching her successful acting career. “My first love is dance, and Lee was the first teacher who let me know my dance dreams were achievable,” said Miss Guy. “I met her between eighth and ninth grade when I enrolled in the summer arts program at Northside School of the Performing Arts. We performed West Side Story and Lee choreographed the production. The next year I attended Northside where Lee was my dance teacher. She pushed me, mentored me and believed in me. She set the tone and a high expectation of what dance was and the discipline and hard work it took to succeed.” “My dream was to dance with Alvin Ailey’s company in New York. Lee had been a member of the company and helped me prepare. I auditioned and won a scholarship to study at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center and later I performed with both the third and second companies. It was truly a life-changing journey. Later, when I began working in musical theater, TV and movies, I incorporated what Lee taught me about discipline and preparation into all aspects of my performing career.” Certainly, not all of Lee Harper’s students will achieve stardom. But that’s not the goal. For Miss Harper, it’s about teaching her students an appreciation of the arts and self-confidence in creative self-expression. But for those who do want to perform professionally, Miss Guy offers this observation: “Lee instills a work ethic in her students that is as strong as any I’ve seen in New York or Los Angeles. Her students work at a high level, so they are prepared to work in other markets, if they choose.” And if they remain or return to Atlanta, as Miss Guy has done? Then the former students become the teachers, passing on the lessons and inspiration to new audiences and students, and continuing the legacy of Lee Harper. Originality starts with trust Expressing yourself takes trust—trust that your individuality is valued, trust that your creativity will be respected, trust that your voice will be heard. At Galloway, we’ve created a learning community where students find the confidence and support to discover things about their world and about themselves. Originality starts with a visit. Come for a tour, meet our students and teachers, and see for yourself the community of trust Galloway offers.
