little more than five years ago, Stephen Poff was asked to work with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival to create some show art for their Southern Writers Project and it’s been a fruitful partnership ever since. Stephen began his career as a musician, which involves quite a bit of self-promotion. During that time he developed an interest in every aspect of marketing, including video production, graphic arts and eventually photography. Every year he embarks on a creative project that will take a year to complete. Past projects include writing and directing a film, making an Alabama album on his iPhone and Shakespeare Festival 2011 this year he is writing and Production recording a song a week… Flagmaker of Market Street, he’s currently on song 47. Photo by But it was his project in Stephen Poff 2006 and then 2008 that attracted the marketing staff at ASF. In 2006 Stephen began what would be called the 365 Days Self-Portrait Project. He would take self-portrait a day for each day of the year. These weren’t “selfies” in the 4

bathroom mirror, but rather very ambitious works of art, each having to be completed in just a couple of hours. The project gained lots of worldwide recognition and works from the project have ended up on the covers of novels and magazines. Stephen currently is a staff photographer and filmmaker at the advertising agency Stamp, which is located in Montgomery Alabama. He enjoys lots of freedom to work on freelance projects, including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and is very proud of the work he’s done with the theater. “I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with a world-class staff of artisans and actors and am excited every year to participate on the works that they do there. From works of William Shakespeare to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, it’s all very well staged and it gives me plenty to chew on photographically. I can’t wait to see what will be put in front of my lens for the new season!” Stephen lives in Montgomery Alabama with his wife of 21 years and his 2 beautiful daughters.

KENNY LEON WORKS MAGIC WHEN ARTISTS AND PATRONS “RUB UP AGAINST EACH OTHER” By Holley Calmes
Dem Blues” written and directed by Kevin Ramsey from July 7-August 2, 2015. All the productions are held at the Southwest Arts Center. Leon is very emphatic about this location and about the City of Atlanta being a catalyst for positive change. “We can change the ideas of what people think about the South,” he states. “Atlanta is the home of the Civil Rights Movement. And now we’ve grown enough to have an impact on the world.” Having audiences of all ethnicities attend True Colors’ productions in Southwest Atlanta has specific meaning for Leon. “This part of Atlanta is the last bit of the Civil Rights Movement, and when white audiences come into the historical Civil Rights district, it’s like we are visiting each other’s homes.” Embracing African-American classics, exploring how history affects the here and now, balancing “a nice mix of things” Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company provides opportunity for a plethora of ideas. Yet the social implications for growth and understanding, within the historical context of this City, are galvanizing for this artist. “I want to be a part of Atlanta,” he says. “I want to be a part of its becoming what I know it can be.”
“W
e are not separate. Everyone is connected. We all rub up against each other,” states one of Atlanta’s most prominent gifts to the theatrical milieu. Kenny Leon, the 58 year old actor, playwright and Tony Award winner believes the sparks that result from the rubbing ignite a world of creativity. True Colors, Leon’s “moveable feast” of a theatre, launches its new season on January 15-17, 2015 with a play that perfectly captures this philosophy. “Fried Chicken and Latkes,” by playwright Rain Pryor, is about “growing up Black and Jewish,” a splendid example of two cultures “rubbing up” together within one family. “When I read this play, with the Jewish and the Black cultures together, I was curious as an artist. I like to present theatre that mixes it up, puts groups of people together,” Leon says. The full True Colors season “mixes it up” as well as “rubs it together.” Plays that relate to both the past and to “right now” have been selected by Leon who likes to consider how the past has impounded our world. In addition to “Fried Chicken and Latkes” will be “Detroit ‘67” written by Dominque Morisseau from February 10-March 8, 2015 and “Chasin’ 6

Act3 Productions’ Original Musical, By Wheel and By Wing, Given Staged Reading in New York by Broadway, Film and TV Actors By Julie Herron Carson
The musical relates the true struggle of the Parnes family who lived on the Polish-Ukraine border at the outbreak of World War II. Through luck, coincidence and the family’s insistence on staying together, they found themselves traveling always eastward. Although the Jewish family remained only a few days ahead of the Nazi invasion, they were never caught or imprisoned, and survived, family intact, at the end of the war. Several family members now live in Atlanta. Just as the element of chance helped insure the family’s survival, chance played a role in the play’s creation. A few years ago, Jeannie Parnes Wechsler sat next to Patti Mactas on an airplane, and shared her family’s story. “I immediately thought we have to tell this story, and I was humbled and gratified when the family agreed to let Act3 Productions develop a musical based on their experiences and published memoir.” When the musical premiered in Atlanta, nearly all of the surviving Parnes siblings, their spouses and adult children attended the performance. “It was a magical night,” remembers Mactas. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.” Since then, Act3 secured funding to bring in a professional team to polish the book, music and lyrics. The goal of the New York performance is to generate additional support and take the play to the next stage.

n early November, a stellar cast of Broadway, film and television actors came together under the direction of two-time Tony Nominee Jayne Atkinson to present a staged reading of By Wheel and By Wing, an original musical by Atlanta-based Act3 Productions. Staged at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the evening marked the musical’s first New York performance with an Equity cast since it premiered in Atlanta in 2012. Patti Mactas, artistic director of Act3 Productions (www.act3productions.org), produced the performance. Her daughter, Elyssa Mactas, reprised the role she originally played in Atlanta, as did Atlanta actor Connor Crank. Local actor Matt Alea, also performed. Cast members included actors from 13 the Musical, 30 Rock, Gossip Girl, Grease the Musical, House of Cards, Louie, Matilda the Musical, Ragtime the Musical, Sesame Street, Shrek the Musical, Spring Awakening, WICKED the Musical and more. “Once we got the word out about this extraordinary play, we were thrilled at the response from New York’s acting community,” said Atkinson, an award-winning Broadway actress and cast member of Gossip Girl and House of Cards. 10

lvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre from February 11 through 15 for six performances, each ending with Revelations, Alvin Ailey’s timeless classic. There is much excitement surrounding the area premiere of ODETTA — a tribute to the singer known as the “voice of the Civil Rights movement,” as Atlanta played a unique leadership role in that part of our nation’s history. “Alvin Ailey was a pioneer in creating an American modern dance repertory company and I am honored to continue his vision of celebrating the African-American cultural experience and the tenacity of the human spirit with ODETTA. I look forward to returning to the Fabulous Fox to share this season’s premieres, dynamic performances and the always inspiring artistry of Ailey’s extraordinary dancers,” stated Artistic Director, Robert Battle. ODETTA, choreographed by Ailey’s Matthew Rushing, is in tribute to Odetta Holmes’ life as an activist, songwriter, actress, and singer anointed “the queen of American folk music,” by Martin Luther King, Jr. Two Company premieres being 12

AM 1690 CELEBRATES 10 YEARS AS ATLANTA’S VOICE OF THE ARTS By Jon Waterhouse

represents some of the cityʼs best and brightest in the arts community. Musicians, educators, actors, journalists and many others can be found behind the stations microphones. One of the latest programs on AM 1690 is “Never Worlds and Maybe Lands.” It features Atlanta Radio Theatre Company performing its own original radio dramas. It’s a mix of studio recordings and live performances with some stories standing alone and others spanning over several weeks. Throughout the past 10 years and into the future, the scope of the Voice of the Arts continues to widen. As many media outlets cut back on arts coverage, AM 1690 increases it. Although the station explores timeless music from days gone by, it firmly plants itself in the 21st century by playing current indie rock and offering its own free iPod and Droid applications. AM 1690 may be blowing out 10 candles, but it plans to light Atlanta’s radio fire for years to come.
f a baker was given the charge of creating a birthday cake for AM 1690 The Voice of Arts, it would undoubtedly be a confection packed with a myriad of flavors. That would be the best way to reflect the most eclectic spot on Atlanta’s radio dial. As AM 1690 celebrates its 10th anniversary, listeners can cut a slice of diversity by tuning in to this rule-breaking station. The brainchild of owner Joe Weber, AM 1690 continues its mission of delivering the best in arts and entertainment, much of which corporate radio often overlooks. “I was never a teacher, but I like sharing things with people who I think will enjoy them,” Weber says. This means broadcasting a playlist of unprecedented variety and combining it with an amazing array of original programming. You’ll hear music by composers ranging from Dylan to Debussy, and specialty shows and segments exploring roots music, jazz, classical and all points in between. The 1690 staff takes great care choosing its music. And the stations on-air talent 14

he Center for Civil and Human Rights is an engaging cultural attraction in downtown Atlanta that connects the American Civil Rights Movement to modern Global Human Rights Movements. The New York Times called The Center the “main event” in downtown Atlanta’s renaissance, in part due to its singular architecturaldesign by worldrenowned architect Phil Freelon. The Center fulfills its mission — to empower people totake the protection of every human’s rights personally — through its awardwinning exhibits. The interactive surround-sound lunch counter allows you to place your palms onto the counter and experience the threats the heroic sit-in protestors braved in Greensboro. The “Who Like Me” responsive mirrors allow you to stand face-to-face with a Human Rights champion from around the world who will tell you their story. The Center also displays personal papers, artifacts, anditems that belonged to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as the exclusive public venue for the Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection. labama and Shakespeare go together like pecans and pie. If you have been to the marvelous performing arts complex in Montgomery, Alabama, known as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF), you have no cause to doubt the veracity of that statement. Nestled in a gorgeous 300-acre park that it shares with the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the complex includes three performance venues, the 792-seat Festival Theatre, the 262-seat Octagon Stage, and a 200seat outdoor amphitheater surrounded by an exquisite Shakespeare Garden. Although the facility is marvelous, it is the magic going on inside the theatres that make any visit truly worthwhile. This January on the Festival Stage ASF presents Always…Patsy Cline with 2013 BroadwayWorld Best Actress Jacqueline Petroccia, who CBS Radio said “as Patsy Cline is the closest to the real thing as you will ever hear.” In February, a whimsical production of Alice in Wonderland plays on the Octagon Stage while Oscar Wilde’s deliriously funny The Importance of Being Earnest plays in the Festival Theatre. In March and April ASF celebrates Shakespeare with 22

critics alike calling it “A MUSICAL WORTH SINGING ABOUT!” (The New York Times) Filled with one heart-pounding number after another, it’s a high-energy explosion of song and dance you just don’t want to miss.
A young girl dreaming of adventure meets a family with a fabulous secret. Their chance encounter will change them all forever. Take an exhilarating journey you’ll never forget in this new musical about everlasting love, never-ending life, and discovering what it means to truly feel alive. Based on the beloved, best-selling, award-winning novel by Natalie Babbitt, TUCK EVERLASTING comes to life on stage in a wholly original production, directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, The Drowsy Chaperone, Spamalot), featuring a book by Tony Award® nominee Claudia
Center For Civil And Human Rights History Comes Alive
The Center for Civil and Human Rights is an engaging cultural attraction in downtown Atlanta (adjacent to the World of Coca-Cola and Georgia Aquarium) that connects the American Civil Rights Movement to modern Global Human Rights Movements. Sit-in at an interactive lunch counter and experience what heroic protestors braved; stand face-to-face with Human Rights champions; and witness items that changed history: Dr. King’s personal papers. Find out for yourself why The New York Times called The Center the “main event” in downtown Atlanta’s renaissance. For more details, hours, and ticket information visit www.civilandhumanrights.org. Get social on Facebook and Twitter (@Ctr4CHR).
The Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern
Love is a many splendid thing, unless you’re Sir John Falstaff. In January, The Shakespeare Tavern becomes the playground for the lecherous drunk who tries to swindle two of Windsor’s clever and mischievous wives. With a jealous husband hot on his trail, things cannot end well for Falstaff, but you’re certain to guffaw at the shenanigans. In February, we get back to the kind of love and romance we’re used to: two teenagers of opposing households, fall in love, get married, get separated and well, you know the rest. Now that we think about it…maybe love is a many splintered thing, instead.
From Arlo Guthrie to Mummenschanz at the Ferst
The air sparkles with arts activity on the campus of Georgia Tech this winter! In January join Arlo Guthrie for a 50th anniversary celebration of his famous “Alice’s Restaurant” and greet the return of the inimitable jazz vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur. In February choreographer Jonah Bokaer and his New York dance troupe perform an evening that includes “Why Patterns,” a dance piece featuring thousands of ping pong balls! From Germany comes the return of Mummenschanz, a physical theatre troupe presenting an evening filled with surprises. And the stage warms up with master fiddlers Natalie
