Aurora Theatre’s New Facility Offers Places for Spectacle, Community, Engagement, and Soaring Imaginations by Holley Calmes

Co-founders Anthony Rodriguez and Ann-Carol Pence

T

he year is 2007. Aurora Theatre founder Anthony Rodriguez settles into his new theatre building, a 19th century historic church in the middle of Lawrenceville, Ga. He looks out the window at the available property that still exists on this block. He knows immediately what the future for his growing arts organization will be. Now surrounded by a $35 million, 59,500 square foot, state-of-the-art complex on that very block, his partner and Aurora co-founder Ann-Carol Pence recollects the vision that made the new Lawrenceville Arts Center possible. “So many reporters ask us, ‘could you have imaged this new facility back in 2007?’” The answer was always “yes” for this duo and the unswerving commitment of the City of Lawrenceville. Not that the old space had restricted the Aurora from producing whatever inspired their ambitious imaginations. “As theatre artists, we performed everything we wanted to in the old space. Even ‘Les Miz’!” explains Rodriguez. “But now we have a greater capacity for spectacle. Everything can be grander.” 1,000 visitors explored the new facilities during the opening weekend. Rodriguez says, “We curated small tours instead of having one big party. Starting in the old building, groups continued through the new areas, experiencing spaces with small entertainments, groups of artists in different places.” This type of introduction showcased

the many performing possibilities the new facility offers, hopefully sparking creative ideas for future events. “For example, we are so happy to have Atlanta’s Dance Canvas here for their Spring Show,” Pence enthuses about the innovative group from downtown Atlanta. “There are stages all over the place,” Pence explains. “Coming into the building from outside, it looks like an auditorium. But really there are smaller spaces everywhere. We can create a stage under a staircase, or host a group of musicians in the Kistner Art Gallery, and so much more.” “There is no formula,” adds Rodriguez. “We are learning a lot about the space as we go. If someone has the right plans for a certain area, we welcome them, and we’ll work with each group as they come.” Community arts organizations are welcomed here and are already booking available space. “It’s so important for arts organizations to encourage and support each other, and we are delighted to do so by providing beautiful new performing spaces for other groups to utilize. The Lawrenceville Arts Center is a tremendous addition to the city, county and region, and soon will become a destination for arts lovers throughout greater Atlanta and beyond,” Rodriguez says. Aurora Theatre will offer its annual hit, “Christmas Canteen”, Nov. 26 – Dec. 23. Both Pence and Rodriguez are looking forward to welcoming new and returning patrons to the theatre’s spectacular new home.

The Rialto Center for the Arts Welcomes the New Year!

O

n the heels of launching its Season of Mastery this fall, the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University ushers in 2022 with three great shows: the Trumpet Festival of the Southeast featuring Sean Jones with special guest David Pastor, Angélique Kidjo, and Pacific Mambo Orchestra. Trumpet virtuoso Sean Jones, special guest David Pastor, and the Georgia State University Jazz Band under Gordon Vernick, perform for the Trumpet Festival of the Southeast. This annual regional festival brings together students, educators, and trumpet enthusiasts. Presented by the Georgia State University School of Music and the Center for Collaboration and Innovation in the Arts (CENCIA), this performance pays homage to Brazilian jazz trumpeter, Claudio Roditi. Four-time Grammy-winner Angélique Kidjo returns to the Rialto after more than a decade. Among the most iconic and respected artists in international music today, Kidjo has collaborated with everyone from Alicia Keys to Bono. In addition to her masterful vocal prowess and innovative explorations of crosscultural musical genres, Kidjo is also

a tireless advocate for women and children in her native home of Benin and across Africa, serving as both an OXFAM and UNICEF goodwill ambassador. The opportunity to experience an international star of this magnitude in the intimate setting of the Rialto comes only — in the words of her critically acclaimed tribute to the Talking Heads — “Once in a Lifetime.” Pacific Mambo Orchestra (PMO) is a Grammy-winning big band with an even bigger sound. Rooted in rich Latin musical traditions, PMO expands and invigorates the big band legacy with an energy all their own. In 2014, this comparatively unknown act beat out industry superstars Marc Anthony and Carlos Vives for the “Best Latin Tropical Album.” Salsa Trips Magazine dubbed Pacific Mambo Orchestra “one of the best Latin big bands in the world.” There will be dancing in the aisles at this one! Tickets are available for these, and all Rialto Series shows, at the Rialto Box Office, by phone at (404) 413-9849 and online at rialto.gsu.edu. Free/validated parking is available for all Rialto Series shows at the 100 Peachtree Parking Garage on Fairlie Street.

tage adaptations of award-winning, best-selling children’s books and classic literature, a critically acclaimed adult puppet performance based on a true story, and new experimental works for adults are all part of the upcoming season at the Center for Puppetry Arts. Museum programming, workshops, and special events will all be part of the line-up at the Center in the coming months. Presenting performances by visiting artists from all over the country as well as original productions created by the Center, the season opens with The Snowy Day, by the Mesner Puppet Theater of Kansas City, MO. Based on the book and other stories by Ezra Jack Keats, The Snowy Day celebrates the magic and boundless possibilities of the first snowfall and living each day to the fullest. Opening on February 2 is Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type, based on the book by Doreen Cronin with illustrations by Betsy Lewin. Farmer Brown can’t believe his ears: cows typing! Then, he receives a letter from the cows. If they do not get what they want, they will strike. Will there be a barnyard bargain? Then, opening March 18 is a classic tale about unlocking the potential that exists within each of us, The Wizard of Oz. The Frisch Marionettes of Cincinnati, Ohio, have

reimagined this American fairytale as Dorothy and her friends celebrate America’s rich musical history by singing the blues as they travel down the Yellow Brick Road. The final production in the Family Series is Pete the Cat. Based on the New York Times best-selling book series, Pete takes the stage on April 7. Opening on April 8, is the extraordinary, critically acclaimed production of Chimpanzee by Nick Lehane. This adult-only show is based on true stories of chimpanzees raised as children in human homes, in a series of cross-fostering experiments. What becomes of them? Finally, closing the season will be the return of XPT, the Center’s experimental puppetry theater presenting new puppetry works for adult by various artists from all over the country. http://puppet.org

he gong resounds, the curtain opens, and a heavenly scene is right before your eyes. Fairies emerge from a sea of billowing clouds. Mongolians ride on horseback across grasslands as vast as the sky. Classic stories of love and loss, of humor and heroic deeds, come to life. You will be amazed by how vibrant, exciting, and profound classical Chinese culture can be.

of Tang court ladies to the battlefield heroics of valiant generals, from the timeless philosophical works of Lao-Tzu to spectacular scenes of magical realms. Some pieces also touch upon the topic of today’s China, shedding light on the oppression many experience for their spiritual beliefs, such as Falun Dafa. These tales of courage are often what audience members find the most touching and uplifting. Shen Yun’s works convey the extraordinary depth and breadth of genuine Chinese culture and bring the magnificence of five thousand years of civilization back to life on stage.

A Divine Culture—Lost Through breathtaking dance and music, Shen Yun’s artists tell of a time when divine beings walked upon the earth, leaving behind a culture that inspired generations. Ancient Chinese wisdom, infused with Buddhist and Taoist spirituality and values, gave birth to everything from medical innovations to opera, dance, architecture, and even martial arts. But after decades of communist rule, much of this divinely inspired culture has been destroyed or forgotten.

A Global Sensation Shen Yun tours to some 150 cities around the world each year. From Tokyo to Paris, Sydney to New York, Shen Yun’s live performances garner thunderous applause and accolades from full houses everywhere. Some audience members drive hundreds of miles to see it. Others watch the same performance five or six times. Why? There are simply no words to describe it — you have to see it with your own eyes to find out. Get tickets online at ShenYun.com/GA or by calling 877-663-7469.

5,000 Years of Civilization Reborn Shen Yun is a brilliant artistic revival and celebration of China’s rich cultural heritage. Each performance consists of about 20 pieces, quickly moving from one legend, region, or dynasty to the next. Themes range from the delicate elegance

Ghost at KSU

ArtsKSU Presents Kicks off 2022 with Strong Lineup of Events

T

he College of the Arts at Kennesaw State University will be presenting a full roster of ArtsKSU Presents events, from innovative dance choreography and classical musical performances to a moving portrayal of Native Americans, beginning in January 2022. The Department of Dance welcomes Canada’s Tentacle Tribe in their performance of Ghost, January 28-29. Made possible thanks to the Pomare/Connor Memorial Endowment Fund for Dance at KSU, this new work combines elements of contemporary dance, street dance, and martial arts in a physical score that echoes the subtle pulse of respiration. From technical feats to dreamlike sequences, Ghost is a welcome breath of fresh air. The Bailey School of Music at KSU will host Anthony McGill and The Pacifica Quartet on January 22. One of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures, McGill serves as the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — the orchestra’s first African American principal player — and maintains a dynamic international solo and chamber music career. The Pacifica Quartet has

achieved international recognition as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. On March 19, Bailey School of Music will present the Vijay Ilyer Trio. Iyer has been voted DownBeat Magazine’s “Artist of the Year” honors four times in the past decade. Having released a series of highly acclaimed records with his trio, his sextet, and other groups, Iyer’s 2021 Uneasy, recorded with superstar partners Linda May Han Oh on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums, is an acknowledged landmark. The Boston Globe called it “extraordinary,” noting that it “reaffirms his status as one of the most creative figures in improvised music.” An exhibition highlighting Native American artists, Walk in Beauty, will be on exhibition at The School of Art and Design’s Zuckerman Museum of Art, January 11–February 12. Next, the ZMA will open Leonardo Drew: Cycles, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, February 19–May 7. Heavenly music fills the Atlanta firmament!

“W

hen you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are.
Anything your heart desires will come to you… Fate is kind, she brings to those who love
the sweet fulfillment of their secret longing… When you wish upon a star your dreams come true.” (Ned Washington, 1940) All of us at Atlanta Master Chorale hope you have a wonderful holiday season and send our best wishes for an extraordinary New Year! For us, our wish and dreams are coming true. We will be even happier when some of the remaining restrictions are lifted and we are thrilled that great music-making is being performed live, once again. This new year promises to be a continuation of our amazing season with a focus on stars. In January, we welcome a local Georgia international star to join us. Mezzosoprano Jamie Barton will take the stage for the Duruflé Requiem, Five Mystical Songs of Vaughn Williams and more. Critically acclaimed by virtually every major outlet covering classical music, opera singer Jamie Barton is increasingly recognized for how

she uses her powerful instrument offstage to lift up marginalized communities. This bright star will be followed by our March concert which will have heavenly stars at its center. A newly commissioned piece of music is at the heart of the concert and will bring another unique experience. Commissioned by our Chorale and composed by the marvelous Jake Runestad, The Ways of Stars will be premiered at the March 11 and 12 concerts. This piece highlights the life and work of Maria Mitchell, the first female astronomer in the United States, who was also the first American scientist to discover a comet, which brought her international acclaim. The song’s lyrics share her description of a total solar eclipse that took place in 1869. Mitchell was also an early advocate for science and math education for girls and the first female astronomy professor. Join us for these star-studded concerts and experience an evening of music of the heavens. Information and details about the concerts, tickets and livestreams can be found at AtlantaMasterChorale.org/concerts.

Rachael Brightwell Welcomes Audiences Back to Live Performing Arts Events at the Schwartz Center by Holley Calmes

“A

t the moment, my dreams are shaped by the period of time in which we find ourselves — I dream of a packed house with a full orchestra onstage,” says Rachael Brightwell, managing director of Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Having endured the COVID pandemic and the affect it had on the arts, Brightwell looks forward to the March announcement of the Schwartz Center’s 2022-2023 full roster of performances. The Center’s 20th anniversary will be celebrated in 2023, and the fact that patrons and students are returning in person to the concert hall is exciting to Brightwell, who came to Emory in 2013. “It’s really unique that we are preparing for the 20th anniversary of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at the same time we are transitioning back to in-person performances. It’s given us this really interesting opportunity to clearly see how important the performing arts are to our students and audiences, and it’s never been clearer that the value they add to our lives is immeasurable,” Brightwell explains. The Schwartz Center’s Emerson Concert Hall is one of Atlanta’s cultural gems, and nearly 100 concerts are presented each year in addition to the acclaimed Candler Concert Series and Schwartz Artist-in-Residence series. The Candler Series features young, up-and-coming performers alongside

Rachael Brightwell, Managing Director of Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts the world’s most established artists. The Schwartz Artist-in-Residence series bring to the campus artists who teach and engage with Emory and Atlanta-area students. Enhanced focus on Diversity is also planned. Blackwell says, “Representation matters, and it’s important to us that our students and community see performers on our stage that are reflective of the student body and the community in which we live. Beyond ensuring that there is a more diverse representation in our roster of visiting artists, we work with Atlanta area schools to bring in primary and secondary aged students to learn directly from our visiting artists.” The Schwartz Center is also a prime venue for productions featuring dance and other types of performing artists. And although the public must wait until March to see the 2022-2023 Season, Brightwell has an announcement. “I am thrilled to give a sneak peek and tell you that we’ll present the return of Anne Sophie Mutter and the Mutter Virtuosi in February 2023, nearly 20 years to the day the Schwartz Center opened its doors!”

The Pirates of Penzance, Photo by Jeff Roffman

his January, The Atlanta Opera takes to the high seas with the pirates who take pity on orphans, with a lively production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance. The first opera to sell out five nights for The Atlanta Opera when it last appeared in 2016, the return of Seán Curran’s colorful production features Atlanta favorite Santiago Ballerini, recognized as one of the leading tenors in the bel canto repertoire. He sings the role of Frederic, the pirate apprentice with an unfortunate birthday. Next, the company stages The Barber of Seville, Rossini’s perennially popular comedy of errors, in a revival of the highly stylized staging by Michael Shell that impressed Opera News as “hilariously delightful with every random turn.” Combining Rossini’s bubbly and worldfamous score with inspiration drawn from the work of acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, this production transports audiences to a pop-culture world populated by outrageous characters and one pampered rooster. Rising mezzosoprano Stephanie Lauricella, who recently joined the roster at the Metropolitan Opera in 2020 and last sang in Atlanta with the

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 2019, will sing the role of Rosina. The Atlanta Opera music director Arthur Fagen will lead the production. The Mainstage season concludes in May with the Southeast premiere of Zvulun’s new production of The (Re)volution of Steve Jobs, winner of the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording. Written by Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates to a libretto by Silent Night’s Mark Campbell, (R)evolution follows the visionary Apple co-founder as he looks back on his life and career and confronts his own mortality. Zvulun’s new treatment is just the second production to date, demonstrating that the opera has the kind of durability that places it firmly within the canon. Featuring sets and costumes by Jacob Climer and projections by S. Katy Tucker — the creative team behind The Atlanta Opera’s memorable The Flying Dutchman — (R)evolution is co-produced with Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Austin Opera. Flex Packages are now available to customize your mainstage opera experience. Get yours at https://tickets.atlantaopera.org/packages.

Ga Tech Arts Kicks off 2022 with Extraordinary Dance and Music!

BTJAZ What Problem? Photo Maria Baranova

W

ho are you, and where do you belong? The search for “we” and “me” is at the heart of the extraordinary new works by Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Company and Gabriel Kahane. Enjoy their artistry as they reflect on these powerful questions onstage at the Ferst Center for the Arts. On January 29, 2022, the legendary dance-theater group Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company offers the Atlanta premiere of the new work What Problem? Jones conceived of this highly personal piece — adapted from his massive work, Deep Blue Sea — in pursuit of the elusive “we.” What Problem? includes a cast of local community members along with the company dancers, a deconstructed text from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and themes from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. On February 5, 2022, renowned musician Gabriel Kahane will return to the stage with Magnificent Bird, a chronicle, in story and song, of the final month of an entire year off the internet. Through piano, vocals, and guitar, Kahane creates a personal and impassioned exploration of how we can strive to see ourselves in each other, to renew trust and empathy, and to build coalitions sufficiently powerful

to make a more just society and healthier planet. Georgia Tech Arts weaves art into the learning and research happening across the Institute through a blend of professional performances, exhibitions, installations, residencies, and support for student and faculty ideas. Join us for live performances, public art installations, and artist engagement opportunities. One of the greatest comedies in the English language. It follows the exploits of John Worthing and Algernon Moncrief as they pursue freedom from the constraints of family obligations by inventing alter egos who provide an escape from boring social obligations. Everything works perfectly until John declares his desire to marry the intoxicating Gwendolyn, and Algernon becomes a bit too interested in John’s ward, Cecily! Director Kathleen McManus’ adaptation is imbued with a steampunk ethos — the marriage of Victorian art-nouveau design and anachronistic technologies that creates a fresh, energetic take on the beloved classic. www.aristheatre.org
