Nnamdi Okonkwo

o view the figures of Nnamdi Okonkwo is to witness the presence of peace, resilience and strength. One is able to glimpse movements and gestures, which demand more than a passing glance but a delving into their simple lines and fluid shapes. Okonkwo, born in Nigeria, was drawn to art from childhood, an inclination always encouraged by his mother. By the time he was seventeen he knew two things: he was artistic and he was tall—six feet nine inches. After receiving a diploma in painting in Nigeria, he was recruited by BYU-Hawaii to play basketball, and there he found his opportunity to nourish all his talents. He graduated in 1993 with a BFA in sculpture, and later with his MFA from BYU-Provo in 1997. In his indigenous culture, womanhood is venerated, which made the female form an obvious focus in graduate school. Okonkwo’s sculptures of women are rotund forms that symbolize the abundance of life, “an outward manifestation of a largeness of soul,” he explains. The souls are full of life, even in their seeming stillness. t the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech, new Director George Thompson has been on the job for just a few months, but is already putting the finishing touches on the new season that starts next September. He comes to the position with a full background of experience in presenting the arts, from managing the business side to being a professional dancer himself, and while it will be no surprise that dance will have an important place on the season roster, he is just as passionate about presenting music. Thompson began his arts career in 1979 as a dancer with American Ballet Theatre in New York. In 1987, he was named business manager and promoted to assistant director for Finance and Development for the Purchase College Performing Arts Center, launching a 20-year arts management career. He has served as executive vice president for the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Photo by by Bola Adedire Center, executive director of The Washington Ballet in Washington, D.C., senior vice president of Programming and Operations at Omaha Performing Arts, and conservatory general manager at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre. “The Ferst Center’s history of performances is solid and has deep roots,” Thompson said. “I want to build on this history and expand the interaction with the campus and the community.” “Building on the strong jazz and dance programs already established here, I am planning for future programming to include young and new choreographers in the dance line-up, and for the Ferst Center to be the place to experience contemporary dance in Atlanta. Look for a great mix of musical artists, with the addition of a new seating section up front for jazz shows that has a nightclub feel.” At the Ferst Center he is tasked with overall leadership, selecting the season, fundraising and integrating the Center with the Atlanta arts community and Tech’s academic community. This winter he will continue getting to know the Atlanta community, and understanding what audiences are interested in seeing. He is especially looking forward to performances by the comic dance troupe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Monterey Jazz, and Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance. ASF specializes in hand-made theatre; every production is created by skilled artists working at the theatre to design, build and breathe life into every performance. ong of Atlanta Show Chorus has a wonderful history. Some of our performers are even beginning to make membership a family tradition, by also recruiting their daughters! We’ve come a long way on our journey with many interesting highlights, and we look forward to our bright future. The “Atlanta Chapter” was chartered in 1957 as a chapter chorus of Sweet Adelines International. This original chapter, consisting of about 20 women, met weekly for the purpose of becoming educated while singing and performing the barbershop style of harmony. In 1970, two small chapters (The “Atlanta Chapter” and “Song of the South Chapter”) decided to merge and became the “Song of Atlanta Chorus” and voila, an amazing chorus was born! We were exceedingly proud when our director, Becki Hine, became the very first director in our region to be awarded the revered title of “Master Director”. We feel certain that her constant vigor to achieve new goals and musical excellence will gain us even greater achievements in the future. We currently have members ranging from age 16 to senior status. Some of the things we share are our deep love for the close harmonies we sing, lasting friendships and the amazing achievements we make together. We are truly a family of sisters and are thrilled to have three mother/ daughter teams among us making SOA a real family event! Song of Atlanta is extremely proud to be 13-time Regional Chorus Champions of Region 23, having won the competitions in 2009, 2007, 2005, 2003, 2001, 1999, 1997, 1995, 1993, 1991, 1988, 1986 and 1983. We are also thrilled to be three-time International medalists having placed 6th in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2008, 8th in Nashville, Tennessee in 2002 and 10th in Orlando, Florida in 2000. History of Sweet Adelines International: After World War II, barbershop singing was growing increasingly popular for men. In 1945, a small group of women wanted to participate in the chord-ringing, fun-filled harmony that the men were singing. So these women organized “Sweet Adelines in America.” From its humble beginnings in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sweet Adelines International, as it is now called, has grown to a membership of almost 30,000 women in countries all across the globe. BEHiND tHE 8 CouNt A Choreography Perspective By tina A. Fears (AADR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR)

he African American Dance Review’s “The Progressive Realization of Dreams” is a thought provoking and visually stimulating production consisting of over 15 choreographed pieces. This production captivates audiences by giving a historical account of how African American dance has evolved into what we see today. It also shows how both dance and music are like threads that help make up a blanket of African American history. The choreography is built upon a jazz and contemporary foundation; however as the show progresses popular dances from numerous time periods are easily identified. When developing the artistic direction for AADR, it was important to be authentic to the story being told while making sure the production was educational and entertaining. The AADR cast consists of extremely talented dancers with the majority less than 30 years of age. With several of the choreographed pieces covering time periods as early as the 1800’s, historical research was required. Our dancers are encouraged to become the story in movement and expression. Many times dancers get so wrapped in the technical perspective that the story is lost. Our dancers are taught that a raised eyebrow or a sway of a hip can communicate emotion and connect with the audience. Music selection is also a key element as the song choices needed to take viewers back to the place and time in their life. If someone attended college in the late 1970’s Parliament’s “Flashlight” should make the viewer want to get up and dance. Artistic and historical influences include the Roaring 20’s, The Civil Rights Movements and the Birth of Hip Hop to name a few. BuNRAku CoMES to AtlANtA

unraku is a unique and revered traditional Japanese puppetry art form. Historically, Bunraku puppets range in size from two-and-a-half feet to four feet in height requiring three puppeteers for realistic manipulation—one for the feet, one for the left arm, and one for the right arm and head. As a result of precise synchronization this ensemble work evokes tremendous emotion through its beauty and realism. It is often said that Bunraku puppets move so freely and naturally that they appear to be alive. The training process is rigorous; traditionally, it takes a Bunraku puppeteer ten years to master manipulating the feet, twenty years to master the left arm, and thirty years to master the right arm and head (the features that most define the puppet’s personality). Bunraku originated in the Japanese city of Osaka in 1872; however, after World War II, the number of Bunraku puppeteers declined and conservation measures were taken by the Japanese government. Shortly thereafter, the Bunraku puppetry art form was declared a national Japanese treasure. Thematic Bunraku dramas revolve around Confucian concepts of loyalty at the cost of personal feelings and underscore the tragedy that ensues. Today, Bunraku puppetry is seen as art form through which younger generations can become attuned to the past. This past September, a private ceremony was held at Atlanta’s own Center for Puppetry Arts in which Japanese Bunraku Puppet Master Kiritake Kanjuro III dedicated two historically significant Bunraku puppets to the Center’s permanent museum collection. Named “Osome” and “Hisamatsu,” the puppets were used to perform the Japanese play Nozaki, a story in which their divergent familial backgrounds ultimately cause them to commit love suicide—an overarching theme in Bunraku theater. The two Bunraku puppets will join the hundreds of other historical puppets already on display in the Center’s Puppets: The Power of Wonder exhibit, the largest collection of global puppetry in the nation. As the largest American non-profit dedicated solely to the art of puppetry, the Center for Puppetry Arts is a cultural steward of the art form’s international and historical legacy.
