THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER ARTIST

JUDIE JACOBS

J

udie Jacobs has been a presence in the Atlanta art community for over 25 years. She has mastered various art media including ceramic sculpture, oil painting and currently her work combines the ancient art of encaustic with modern digital imagery. Encaustic painting is rooted in a process first used by Greek artisans that incorporates the use of hot beeswax and pigment binders. Combining a variety of media, the artist richly layers her painted images and photography with digital manipulation, text from Hebrew prayers and poetry written by her late husband, Warren Jacobs. Many of her new works portray the disappearing rural buildings, barns and farmhouses in the Southern landscape. Judie’s works are intended to summon forth meditative personal spaces that allow the viewer to connect with deeper moments of inner reflection and a sensitivity to important life events. Judie works in her studio/gallery at the Tula Arts Center on Bennett Street in Atlanta where she has maintained a studio since 1984. Other artists are represented in her studio/gallery as part of the First Thursday Gallery Walk on Bennett Street each month. She has been a major influence in the lives of many young artists through her work as an art educator at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta. Sculptural works, paintings and encaustics created by Judie are found in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the country. Thomas Deans Fine Art Gallery, The Watson Gallery, Frameworks Gallery and The Art House currently represent Judie’s art in Atlanta. For more information and representations of the artist’s work, please visit her website at www.judiejacobs.com

VINCE ANTHONY’S FASCINATING PUPPETS by Holley Calmes

T

he Center for Puppetry Arts has been one of Atlanta’s most popular and respected arts organizations since founder Vince Anthony, Jim Henson and Kermit opened its doors on September 23, 1978. What led Mr. Anthony to our City, and what about puppetry arts continues to fascinate the public? Mr. Anthony Anthony offers some insight below: Q. What was it about the City of Atlanta that led you to settle here back in the 70’s? I was raised in Florida and wanted to settle near my family. In NYC, before making a decision, I read the Atlanta Sunday paper and realized that the (then) new Woodruff Arts Center was being built and there wasn’t much puppetry activity. There seemed to be a lot of Arts enthusiasm in Atlanta. I wanted to start my company in a place with little or no puppetry activity so the audience could grow in number and enthusiasm along with the work. This has pretty much happened. Q. Education seems to have played such a part of the CPA’s development. What do puppets have to teach us? Puppets have an intrinsic quality of reaching out to people in a very honest way. Since they, themselves, are not living beings, puppets can articulate feelings and thoughts in very clear-cut, often naïve, terms that tend to resonate with people, especially young people. Q. What do puppets “do” that live actors can’t? Why is this worthy in an artistic sense? Why do puppets continue to intrigue audiences? Due to their ability to be and do anything, puppets can be used to teach in abstract ways that can’t be done by human actors. For example, who better to teach about nutrition than an actual piece of pasta? How better to understand the pre-historic ages than by watching dinosaurs roaming around in their environment? Want to really experience a day in the life of the Amazonian Rainforest? Why don’t you just move into our theater for an hour? Q. What did you bring from your relationship with Jim Henson that has had the most positive effects on CPA? Jim and I were both very involved in the National Organization for Puppetry, The Puppeteers of America, back in the late 70s, when we started planning for an International Puppet Festival to be held in Washington D.C. During the planning stages of this festival, I mentioned to Jim my dream of creating a permanent puppet center that would stage new and innovative productions, as well as bring in puppet artists from around the world, and house an international puppet museum to further the understanding and appreciation of the art form. Jim had always been fascinated in the origins of puppetry, as well as the puppet traditions from around the world, and was incredibly supportive of my endeavor from the beginning. Jim was very involved in the early development of the Center and brought Kermit with him to cut the ribbon on opening day. To this day, Jim’s family and legacy remain an integral part of the Center’s tradition Located at 1404 Spring Street in downtown Atlanta, the Center for Puppetry Arts has productions designed for every age and member of the family. Audiences can enjoy “Rudolph the red Nosed Reindeer,” through January 2; “Randel McGee and Groark” from January 6-14; and “The Body Detective” from January 18 - March 13. THE TWISTS AND TURNS THAT LED FREDDIE ASHLEY UP ON STAGE

F

reddie Ashley has been Artistic Director of Actor’s Express since July 2007. But to this Rome, Georgia, native, the road to running one of Atlanta’s most respected and provocative theatres was full of unexpected twists and turns. Ashley was initially hit by the acting bug and earned degrees in acting from Shorter College in his hometown, and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. After graduate school in Mississippi, Ashley acted for a season in Kentucky before returning home to Georgia to plot his next move. Following some retail work and adjunct university teaching, he moved to Atlanta in the fall of 1999 and got his start in the scene shop of the Alliance Theatre, where he first began working as the buyer/ bookkeeper. He soon moved from the production department to the Literary Department, where he was assistant to the Senior Dramaturg on staff. Before long, he was working on dramaturgy projects of his own and was promoted to Literary Associate in 2001. He became Literary Manager in 2005, a position he held until he moved across town to the Express. Since Ashley moved to Actor’s Express, the theatre has received many accolades, including three of its productions in the AJC’s Top Ten of 2009 list. Ashley himself has been nominated for five Suzi Bass Awards for directing, winning for last year’s smash hit musical Grey Gardens. But before too much more water flows under the bridge, Ashley plans to bring his experience full circle by returning to his acting roots. He will tread the boards at Actor’s Express this summer in The Judas Kiss by David Hare, in which he will portray the legendary Oscar Wilde. He has not acted since 2004, so the return to the stage does not come without some nerves. Ashley says, “I know it sounds silly, but I’m honestly worried about memorizing lines. I haven’t had to memorize lines in almost seven years, so it’s a muscle that hasn’t been worked out in a while!” For more information about The Judas Kiss, please visit www.actors-express.com. 10

FLY TO NEVERLAND IN WORLDS FIRST 360-DEGREE CGI LIVE THEATRE by Jan Anderson

H

igh-Tech Presentation of Peter Pan at Pemberton Place presented by British Production Company threesixty entertainment starts January 21, 2011. Snug in a cushy theater seat just a few rows from the stage, you happily settle in to enjoy threesixty entertainment’s presentation of the familiar story of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan performing at Pemberton Place, staged in a beautiful white tent set up adjacent to World of Coca-Cola. You’ve seen the play many times in many productions, but this time as you watch Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael rise in flight from the stage, you’re gripped by a new sensation: your feet seem to be leaving the ground! That’s because the theater in which you’re seated is the first in the world to integrate 360° projection screening, complete with computer generated images (CGI), into live theater performance. The thrilling illusion of movement is the result of twelve synchronized projectors running highresolution CGI video onto more than 15,000 square feet of screens that entirely surround the audience; it is the equivalent of three IMAX screens. Combined with staging effects where characters fly above London and on to Neverland, it creates an incredibly realistic sensation of gliding among star-flecked skies, careening around towers, drifting through clouds, eluding bloodthirsty pirates, darting through archways, skimming waterfalls, and speeding through dense jungles teeming with crocodiles. They even dodge sharks and swim with a mermaid in a brief, spectacular underwater sequence. All of this takes place within a 128-foot-high tent theatre, so new that Atlanta will be only the fourth stop on its world tour and the first on the East Coast. It started in London in 2009, followed by 2010 runs in San Francisco and Orange County. For scenes of London, threesixty entertainment first built a scale model representing 400 square miles of Edwardian London and shot it with the 360° lens. The goal was to create an expansive sense of space from any angle at all times. According to designer William Dudley, it took nearly three weeks for a room filled with supercomputers‚ the same that did the CGI work for the movie Spider-man, to convert his team’s instructions to finished images. The timing couldn’t have been better: the 360° lens system had only just become available. Up to that point, the lenses could only cover 220°. The new system represented a quantum leap for melding live theater with CGI. Projected seamlessly on walls of the cylindrical theater, the images enfold actors and audiences alike in a realistic setting unmatched in live theater. For someone familiar with London, the flying scenes over the city are pure delight. Tickets for Peter Pan start at $20 for children and $35 for adults, and behind-the-scenes “Into Neverland” tours will be held every Saturday during the run. Order tickets online at peterpantheshow.com or by phone at 1-888-ppantix (1-888-772-6849). Group discounts are available by calling 404-881-2000. 12

A MAN IS KNOWN BY THE COMPANY HE KEEPS Local Theatre Brings International and Local Artists Together

I

tried to keep up, scribbling maniacal notes as I sat across the table from Heidi Howard, Education Director and Production Manager of 7 Stages. We were discussing the international collaborations 7 Stages has been involved with over the years: Netherlands, South Africa, Poland …the list went on. The strongest of these stories involves the relationship between 7 Stages and Dah Teatar Research Center in Serbia spanning the fall of the former republic of Yugoslavia. It’s a story that many of us were blessed to only experience through the news reports, but for the artists involved it was their realities, shattered by violence and loss. During that time 7 Stages was utterly helpless as we watched the horrific events unfold on TV but our telephones, the only tie we had to our friends in the region, lay silent. Our relationship with Dah started in 1995 when our staff journeyed to Serbia to learn first hand about the conflict that raged within. The group performed during 7 Stages’ Cultural 24 hour Freezone for Artists Festival during the 1996 Olympics. The years that followed saw both organizations criss-crossing the world to assist each other in their educational and artistic pursuits. Heidi spoke about visiting Belgrade after the 1999 NATO bombings, the hollow remnants of a library graffitied with “f*ck the USA”, of the train conductor that saved her travel party from disappearing with a group of soldiers, and when she watched the streets erupt from the balcony of the National Theatre with the announcement of the results of the first democratic election in 2006. Our collaborations are not just performances, but a personal investment in the stories and people behind them. For 31 years, 7 Stages has been committed to embracing new works from international and local artists alike in an effort to raise cultural understanding. Our pieces push the edge and even when they spur extremist responses, we stand solidly behind our art. This fall we sponsor the first major United States tour of the Dah Teatar: 14 venues in 2 months. The tour wraps up here at 7 Stages with Crossing the Line on November 4 and The Story of Tea on November 5 -6. More information on these pieces, the theatre and the tour can be found at www.7stages.org.

ALABAMA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL A CITY WITH TWO TALES

O

ne hundred and fifty years ago in Montgomery a store owner with a secret, a slave guided by love, a fiery politician, and a divided family took sides and took a stand. Their story is your story. This spring the Alabama Shakespeare Festival will premiere two plays telling the stories of unknown heroes and villains of the early days of Civil War in Montgomery, Alabama. The Flag Maker of Market Street by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder follows the story of George Cowles, a Connecticut merchant and transplant to Montgomery. As the fires of war ignite, Cowles and others secretly meet to stifle the movement. At the same time, Cowles is commissioned by Jefferson Davis to create the first Confederate flag. Cowles’ unexpected high profile and underground activities put himself and those around him in grave danger. Jeffry L. Chastang, in Blood Divided, turns his focus on a young man trying to make sense of his chaotic world and a father desperate to keep his son and family safe in dangerous times. Fifteen year old Willie Baldwin wants to be seen as a man in his father’s eyes but the adult world is difficult to navigate. A cacophony of impassioned voices make it difficult to listen to his own heart. Still Willie is determined to be a maker of his own destiny. These two productions are the product of the Southern Writers’ Project and a partnership between with the Alabama Tourism Department to mark the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. ASF commissioned two playwrights with Alabama roots to craft compelling stories of that turbulent time. The history that was uncovered created two moving stories that are not to be missed. The Flag Maker of Market Street runs from February 4 – March 19, 2011 and Blood Divided runs from February 18 – March 20, 2011. A unique audio tour of local sites mentioned in the plays and narrated by the characters in the plays is being created to enhance you’re the experience. Group discounts and travel packages are available. For more information please visit www.asf.net or call 1.800.841.4273. 16

SONG OF ATLANTA TO WARM THE WINTER WITH MUSIC by Dana Dolan

F

rom high-schoolers to seniors, women of all ages express their inner diva in Song of Atlanta Show Chorus. Song of Atlanta rehearses on Tuesday evenings at St. John United Methodist Church in Buckhead. Several times a year, visiting coaches come to hone particular skills in vocal production, music interpretation, or performance. Most rehearsals are open to observers. This winter offers several opportunities to enjoy Song of Atlanta’s unique sound. Special events include the annual Diva Day Festival, Singing Valentine delivery, and a headlining show. Diva Day, a one-day workshop open to high-school girls, will take place at Chattahoochee High School on February 5. The event will culminate in performances by the festival chorus and Song of Atlanta. “StarStruck,” the chorus’s upcoming show, will feature MAXX Factor, whom you loved on the NBC program The Sing-Off. This past October, the foursome became Sweet Adelines International’s quartet champions; the same week that Song of Atlanta earned its highest-ever chorus placement, finishing fourth. Speaking of sing-offs, Song of Atlanta will host its own this year. The competition is open to teenage singers or small groups, with the preliminary round held during the Diva Day Festival. The top five performers will compete at StarStruck performances. Shows are February 26, at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Throughout the year, Song of Atlanta keeps a full calendar of local and regional events. The chorus performs at parties, conferences, and fundraisers. It’s also kicked off several sporting events, including a Braves game and NASCAR race, with a traditional rendition of the National Anthem. Every year brings a mix of performances and audiences in the metro Atlanta community and beyond; in March, the chorus will compete for the regional championship of Sweet Adelines International in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The winner earns a spot at international competition in October 2012. For more information about Diva Day, Singing Valentine deliveries, “StarStruck”, membership, and event bookings, be sure to visit their website at www.songofatlanta.com or contact them by phone at 770-509-0322 or by email at contact@songofatlanta.com.
