CHESTER HIGGINS

A

favorite among collectors for his classic image “The Moslem Woman,” Chester Higgins has emerged as one of the premier photographers of his generation. Because he believes art humanizes us, the subjects of his photographs are most important to him. Higgins gives voice to the unseen interior spirit. His images resonate with a spiritual echo, which maintains the image and frees it from the constraints of time. Much of Higgins’ imagery is inspired by his quest to re-define the visual document as it relates to people of African descent. Over the past five decades, he has produced six books of compelling images reflecting a sensitive and in-depth diary of his explorations of the human Diaspora and his concern with his own humanity. Viewers gain a rare insight into cultural behavior—a window to another place and time—through Higgins’ portraits and studies of living rituals and ancient civilizations. His images of ordinary moments enable us to see and appreciate the fullness of humanity. “With the camera I embrace the spirit that is the essence of all existence, “ he says. “I search for the signature of the spirit in my subjects, and through my art, I become whole.” Higgins is the author of the photo collections Black Woman, Drums of Life, Some Time Ago, Feeling the Spirit: Searching the World for the People of Africa, Elder Grace, and his memoir Echo of the Spirit. A native Alabamian, he has been a staff photographer for The New York Times since 1975; his photographs have appeared in ArtNews, New York Times Sunday Magazine, Look, Life, Newsweek, Fortune, Ebony, Essence, Black Enterprise, GEO, The Village Voice, New York Magazine, The New Yorker and Archaeology. His work is the topic of two PBS films: “An American Photographer: Chester Higgins Jr.,” and “Brotherman.” He has been featured on CBS: “Sunday Morning News,” PBS: “The NewsHour,” ABC: “Like It Is,” and “Freedom Forum.” His one-man exhibitions have appeared at the International Center of Photography, The Museum of Photographic Arts, The Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of African Art, Musee Dapper Paris, The Schomburg Center, and The New-York Historical Society. His current exhibition “Nubian Dreams: Images of the Sudan” is now on view at the Schatten Gallery at Emory University from June 20 through August 15, 2008. INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE MAGNET PROGRAM

Making It Happen – The Teachers by Pamela Turner The Setting: Spring, 2008, a beautiful clear day. A conference room at a large High School in a growing suburb of Atlanta.. As the play opens, three 18-somethings sit with a teacher they address casually but with evident admiration. The Characters: Victoria – thick blond hair, bouncy, talkative, expressive—must be played by someone who loves musicals and can sing, dance, and act. Especially fond of jazz hands and tap. Claire – light brown hair and matching eyes, gentle, gracious, soft spoken—must be played by someone who is practical and can see the big picture. Especially fond of reinterpreted Shakespeare. Robby – spikes of ash-colored hair on sculptured head, wry, thoughtful, circular— must be played by someone with a rich internal life who can write musical lyrics. Especially fond of misunderstood dramatic characters. “Kimmel” – director of the theatre magnet program—must be played by someone who is dedicated to excellence and can command the respect of feisty teenagers.

sk a committed theatre professional like Brian Kimmel if “Those who can’t, teach?” and watch him explode. Kimmel, the Theatre Arts Instructor and Director at North Springs High School Theatre Magnet Program for the past 11 years, says that “I can do, and that is why I teach.” As a 1995 graduate of Emory’s theatre program, a journeyman at the Warehouse Theatre in Greenville, North Carolina, and one of the founders of the Atlanta-based Out of Hand Theatre in 1999, Kimmel showed his chops as an actor, director, and teacher both before and after he came on board at North Springs. “I found I was most satisfied sharing my skills and experience with high school students.” He began at North Springs as the tech director, and then, when another working professional, Marty Aikens, came on board in that position five years ago, Kimmel was able to concentrate on teaching the performance classes and directing the three-show season that is part of the program. Kimmel is adamant that they need a full-time technical director: “in order to have a viable performing arts program, you can’t have an industrial tech guy who just comes in and builds a couple of sets.” He and the program lucked out with Aikens, who has 17 years of professional experience in theatre, film, and television, including Cirque du Soleil, Utah Shakespeare Festival, NBC, and several award-winning indie films. Aikens had moved to Atlanta to start his own company, Jack in the Black Box Theatre Company, and along the way was enticed to interview at North Springs. “…it turns out that teaching is my kind of gig. I fell in love with it,” says Aikens. “We are teaching our classes as professional training models—preparing them to take on the realities of the profes6

sional world.” Kimmel explains that he focuses on process rather than product and is very interested in helping his students find out what their own process is—“I hope each student will leave here with a sense of how to work, not just in theatre but in other things.” He begins by breaking the bad habits students arrive with on the first day and then initiates them into the mindset of a cohesive theatre ensemble. Because of misdirected coaching in the past, says Kimmel, ”Kids have built up performance habits that are bad—overacting everything, acting just with the face and a big smile and jazz hands on everything.” They also arrive with the notion of being the star, an attitude that is poison to Aikens’ and Kimmel’s philosophy of ensemble work. The foundation of that idea comes from Kimmel’s experience in 1996, when “my theatrical world was flipped upside down while training with Anne Bogart’s SITI Company, in residence at Emory.” This work, known as Viewpoints, provides a comprehensive system for a physical approach to theatre and to ensemble-building. Training in Viewpoints is also a gift for the North Springs students who will most certainly be expected to learn it in their college theatre programs. This and Kimmel’s empowerment of his students may be why he gets “calls from universities who want people who have trained with me.” Students currently working with Kimmel mention that the movement-based, ensemble work they do is what wins them awards, such as those for Best Ensemble, Best Tech, and Best Actress won by their production of Bat Boy at the 2007 Georgia Theatre Conference. The show has also been selected for the 2008 American High School Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Aikens mentions that the students challenge him as much as he does them. “I constantly have to stay on top of my game…they get it…you can approach the material with high expectations and a professional attitude, and they rise to the occasion.” Kimmel adds that he has learned to be a “kind but firm teacher” and that he encourages students to mentor each other in the same way by using examples of an individual student’s approach or work ethic in class. Fortunately, since this is a magnet program, Kimmel and Aikens are not required to follow a prescribed curriculum. They hit the various recommended benchmarks when each is most affective for the group. That is consistent with Kimmel’s assessment that “the best leader always walks into a room and says this is what I have in front of me, this is my set of challenges and set of strengths, so how am I going to maximize that?” He feels that he is especially effective at casting, sometimes choosing a role for someone that requires them to stretch either up or down. In the latter case, an actor may need to learn more about the challenges of being an effective chorus member or to learn a new skill that had not previously held an interest for them. In any case, since both Aikens and Kimmel are able to observe their students “constantly” in classes, through auditions, and during shows, they can tailor roles or responsibilities to the particular stage of the student. Regardless of who is given what, Kimmel says that he wants all of the students to know that he values them and their unique contributions. In all the midst of the huge job that Kimmel and Aikens do, they are also able to find much humor. Asked for a best quote from a student, Aikens repeats, “Do you want round wheels on that?” Kimmel’s contribution is, “Mr. Kimmel, do you want us to Act in this part?” If these guys aren’t doing, then the word has no meaning. But rather than talk about it, they’re too busy preparing to open Fiddler on the Roof, getting ready for Scotland, and choosing the three shows that will go up next year. You see, North Springs students want to use their summer vacation to get ready for the fall. For more info, go to the North Springs website at www.northspringshigh.com.

hildren and adults are invited to experience the 2008 Children’s Education Village through hands-on activities, cultural performances, workshops, demonstrations, films and a multi-cultural book fair. This year six unique three dimensional destinations have been created to depict Afrika and the Afrikan Diaspora. Find the flag of South Afrika, smell the sweet grass of South Carolina. Make the Hand of Fatima, listen to the music of Ali Farka Toure. Travel with us to North, South, East and West Afrika. Don’t forget to stop in the Caribbean before returning home. The 2008 Children’s Education Village will feature legendary author Eloise Greenfield. The author of more than a dozen prize-winning books for children, Ms. Greenfield has helped give black youngsters a literature about their own life experiences. Greenfield’s simple yet eloquent tales cover the familiar territory of childhood, from fantasies to fears, even to living with disabilities. The characters in her books wrestle with all the challenges of growing up as seen from a black American perspective. According to Betty Valdes in the Interracial Books for Children Bulletin, Greenfield “consistently ... illuminates key aspects of the black experience in a way that underlines both its uniqueness and its universality.” As an author, Greenfield feels she has an important and essential task. Despite the limita10

tions of the written word, she told Horn Book Magazine, literature can leave a lasting effect on young minds. “I want to encourage children to develop positive attitudes toward themselves and their abilities, to love themselves,” she stated. “As for abilities, self-confidence is half the battle. Children must be able to face their mistakes and weaknesses without losing sight of their strengths. I want to give children a true knowledge of black heritage, including both the African and the American experiences. The distortions of black history have been manifold and ceaseless. A true history must be the concern of every black writer. It is necessary for black children to have a true knowledge of their past and present, in order that they may develop an informed sense of direction for their future.” Various theme topics engage children and adults to experience the extraordinary power of the arts and culture of the African Diaspora, including: • Read It! Target Multi-Cultural Family Book Fair – Three days of literary based fun for the entire family. The Book Fair is open and free to the public. Children, grandparents, book collectors, and interested members of the public are welcome to attend. Each participating child gets to select a free book. • Enjoy It! Cultural Stage – The performing arts have extraordinary power – they feed the soul, they increase creativity, they add meaning to day-to-day lives—but most of all, they offer joy. • Hear It! The Story Circle – Stories from throughout the African Diaspora fill the imaginations of all ages. Folk tales, family stories, fables, recollections, tall tales, fairy tales and classic stories are presented. • Learn It! Family & Adult Workshops – The pervasive spirit of learning from music and artistic expression makes these workshops not just an intense creative experience, but a significant opportunity for personal grown. Learning about the history of jazz, the visual arts, quilting, the art of storytelling, and selected children’s literature is featured. • Make It! Hands-on Activities – Children 5-12 years in age explore the African Diaspora and participate in interactive and engaging arts-based activities designed to sprout imagination, nurture creativity, and inspire a sense of wonder. • Touch It! Artist Demonstrations – Creative people invent, imagine, problem-solve, create, and communicate in fresh, new ways. Craft persons, including wood carvers, quilters, and potters, will demonstrate skills. When: July 17th, 18th and 19th, 2008 Where: Held at the Woodruff Arts Center More: www.nbaf.org

year ago, the 26-year-old Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus—one of the world’s first such choruses and a local institution—took a giant leap, hiring its first full-time Artistic Director, Kevin

Robison. Today, “We can’t imagine not having a full-time AD…and, more importantly, not being under Kevin’s inspired leadership,” says Board Chairman Frank Bragg. With roots in Alabama and Virginia, Kevin has enjoyed his return to the South and its rich choral heritage. “Early on, I asked how many AGMC members had previous church choir experience—long an important ‘musical training ground’ for singers. Over 90 percent did. That’s indicative of the broad musical experience you typically see in the South, and it’s an exciting foundation upon which to build.” And build he has. Under Kevin’s leadership, the chorus’ membership has grown and season subscribers have tripled. Both main-season productions to date—the Holiday Concert at the Cathedral of St. Philip and the Divas and Dilemmas: Opera OUR Way spring show at the new Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre—have been huge hits with audiences and chorus members alike. And they’re making money to boot…which helps cover not only the salary of a full-time AD but that of full-time new Executive Director and respected arts administrator Brenda Pruitt, while fueling the group’s continued growth. Kevin's other skills as a much-sought-after composer/arranger are about to take center stage. The AGMC will present the Southeast premiere of Kevin’s They Had It Coming: The Music of Kander & Ebb June 27-28 at the Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center. John Kander, who attended the original Kansas City premiere, calls it “brilliant and inspired.” “I strongly believe your performance space has an impact on the audiences’ and the performers’ total experience,” Kevin says. “So the Alliance is the perfect setting for a tribute to the Broadway ‘Dynamic Duo’ that brought us such hits as Chicago, Cabaret and Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Robison’s and the chorus’ busy summer also includes appearances at the annual Atlanta Pride Festival and a much-anticipated performance in July for the 8th-annual GALA Choruses Festival in Miami. “I'm truly blessed to lead this talented group of men,” Kevin says. “I’ve been entrusted with a group really poised to take its place as one of our area’s musical leaders. And the fact they’re all unpaid volunteers capable of this greatness is simply extraordinary.” For more about Kevin, see www.kevinmusic.com; for details about the chorus, see www.agm chorus.org.

hakespeare fun? That was a first!” wrote Juan, a student at Decatur High School. After Georgia Shakespeare’s Education Director, Allen O’Reilly, completed an in-class workshop where the students studied Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet, Juan and his classmates sent back thank you notes stating how surprised they were that they actually had fun while doing Shakespeare. Allen O’Reilly has been affiliated with Georgia Shakespeare for nineteen years as an actor and teacher but was only more recently named as the Education Director in 2004. This summer Allen can be seen on stage during Georgia Shakespeare’s summer festival as Adam and Hymen in As You Like It and Antonio in The Merchant of Venice. But when not on stage, Allen can be found in classrooms and rehearsal halls across the metro-Atlanta area, bring Shakespeare to a whole new generation. “It’s so important to get students out of their seats and onto their feet when dealing with Shakespeare,” said O’Reilly. “Shakespeare’s texts are plays and they’re Allen O’Reilly (Center) gives directions in a teacher meant to be acted out, not read. Students in the 2007 Camp Shakespeare at Georgia Shakespeare act out a scene from Hamlet.

Shakespeare, the words come alive and they find that it’s not scary or intimidating at all. These are stories about people like them…they really get it.” Georgia Shakespeare’s educational offerings are divided into two components; Shakespeare for Students and the Center for Theatre Education. Shakespeare for Students is designed for teachers and schools to incorporate into their classroom teaching, utilizing the Georgia State Performance Standards. Shakespeare for Students is centered on student matinee performances of Georgia Shakespeare’s fall performance as well as a touring production of an abbreviated version of one of Shakespeare’s classics in the winter and spring. The 2008 high school tour of Romeo and Juliet traveled to more than 50 elementary, middle and high schools across the state and even crossed state lines into Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. In-school workshops and residencies are also available, allowing teachers to bring one of Georgia Shakespeare’s professionally trained teaching artists directly into their classrooms for a day, a week, or even longer. The Center for Theatre Education is intended for individual students from elementary on up to adults looking to continue their education. Summer programs include Camp Shakespeare (June 16-27) for elementary students, Shakespearience (July 7-18) for middle school students, and High School Conservatory (July 22 – August 2), an intensive two-week program for the serious acting students. Other classes include Fall and Spring Semester offerings for students and adults of all ages. Information on classes and other educational offerings can be found at www.gashakespeare.org/education.asp or by calling 404.504.3401. “We’re looking forward to another great year of programs,” said O’Reilly. After summer camps and the high school conservatory, Georgia Shakespeare’s education department will prepare for the fall and spring classes, the student matinee performances of Antigone in October, the 2009 High School tour, presenting Julius Caesar and the 2nd Annual High School Acting Competition—a state-wide event open to high school age students who perform scenes and monologs for prizes and scholarships. “It keeps us busy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.” 18
