THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER VISUAL EXPRESSIONIST

CARLOS SOLIS

I

n my infinite world of my imagination, I tried to convey and stimulate the mythical and spiritual elements of visual expression. My passion in painting started with tthe he magnificence elements of nature, fauna and flora, and it’s natural beauty that involves it’s selective conditions. For example, the majestic animals of the Amazon or Indians from Venezuela (Guajiros). However, I always try to expand my work to other areas of reality and with a spiritual meaning; therefore, I, occasionally, have the tendency to go from one extreme to another in order to explore, and show the ranges of styles and techniques by creating the most beautiful and delicate components of life to the most complex and strange art. Fortunately, I have the pleasure and the opportunity Escalador de Suenos to experience the richness of many cultures in South and North America, which allow me to expand my imagination even more; it also helps me to understand the differences and similarities of both worlds. My work reflects the distinctness of my artistic perception from those experiences, which provides vivid colors and physical details in order to make Fishing Illustions something visually pleasing, grotesque or unfamiliar to look at. Furthermore, I also try to create an awareness and express an opinion about our delicate habitat and lack of knowledge about cultural and racial diversity S. America and spiritual concepts. My work can be seen at KoKoSphere Gallery in Roswell (kokogallery.com). I can be reached at 678-9203425 or Carlossolis735@hotmail.com. Untitled

NEW TRINITY BAROQUE’S PREDRAG GOSTA by Holley Calmes

redrag Gosta might find it easier to live in his car or in an airport. Such is his life, one of constant travel to perform and conduct in venues throughout the world. Although he calls Atlanta his home, he is frequently in Washington DC, Europe, and numerous points in between. He recently returned from the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in South Carolina where he performed with his renowned Atlanta-based ensemble, New Trinity Baroque. Predrag, known as “Pedja” to his friends, immediately then left Atlanta for the nation’s capital where he serves as Assistant Conductor for the National Philharmonic. Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Gosta started playing violin at the age of six. Not satisfied with one instrument, he eventually became accomplished on piano, harpsichord, singing and, finally, as a conductor. The recipient of both academic and performance scholarships from Trinity College of Music in London and Georgia State University, he received an undergraduate degree and Postgraduate Certificate from Trinity, and three Master of Music degrees from GSU. Atlanta became a destination for Gosta when he heard tales of the city’s amenities from people returning from the 1996 Olympics. In Atlanta he has found a home. Inspired 6

by his tenure in London, he established a full concert season with New Trinity Baroque, which has been a jewel of Atlanta’s music scene since 1998. New Trinity Baroque has offered an abundance of concerts featuring some of the world’s finest musicians such as the British violinist John Holloway, Dutch virtuoso on recorder Marion Verbruggen and others. In 2006, Gosta found himself conducting an altogether different type of ensemble: a ballet orchestra. Although this was a new challenge for him, his talent and enthusiasm gave Gwinnett Ballet Theatre a wonderful Music Director and Conductor. Since then, its fledgling orchestra has become a strong force behind GBT’s annual, sold out “Nutcracker” performances. Maestro Gosta’s international experiences include guest conducting in Russia, Poland, Mexico, plus performances in Boston, London, New York and Washington DC. Constantly on the move, Pedja now commutes between Atlanta and his other destinations often on a weekly basis. But music is not Gosta’s only talent. A wizard with slight-of-hand and various magic tricks, the conductor mystifies Gwinnett Ballet’s young ballerinas during breaks in Nutcracker rehearsals. Yet his finest magic is reserved for his music, in whatever city or venue he happens to find himself. Fortunately for Atlantans, his focus continues to be on the Olympic City he calls home. Find out more about Mr. Gosta and his work by visiting his web site at www. predraggosta.com. 8

M

usic has a unique power to bring people together. Thus, it’s appropriate that some of the best-known classics of American jazz bring together the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus and Jazz Orchestra Atlanta in partnership with the National Black Arts Festival this summer to present a concert sponsored by Macy’s. “Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn” will feature the timeless music of the man behind hits associated with Duke Ellington, Lena Horne and other superstars for one special performance Saturday evening, Aug. 1 in Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center in midtown Atlanta. “Billy Strayhorn was chief composer and arranger for jazz giant Duke Ellington for nearly 30 years, writing some of the most memorable music of the big-band era. He was a friend and ally of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and above all, he was out and true to himself. What a perfect person and body of work for these groups to come together to celebrate,” said Kevin Robison, artistic director of the AGMC. The concert melds Strayhorn’s musical genius with the choral excellence of the AGMC and the artful jazz stylings of Jazz Orchestra Atlanta to present an event worthy of being included in the National Black Arts Festival. “We are proud to be part of the National Black Arts Festival,” stated Brenda Pruitt, AGMC executive director. “The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus was founded nearly 30 years ago to foster musical excellence and an atmosphere of diversity. The NBAF’s mission statement is very similar: ‘to engage, cultivate and educate diverse audiences about the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and provide opportunities for artistic and creative expression.’ And Jazz Orchestra Atlanta is dedicated to presenting a wide range of jazz events that appeal to a broad cross-section of the Atlanta area. This incomparable musical event will fulfill the missions of all three of these organizations, as well as continue Macy’s commitment to diversity and enhancing the quality of life of its communities.” For more information or to purchase tickets, see www.agmchorus.org. 12

SHOWGUIDE PROFILE

THE LEGACY THEATRE

ithin almost five years from a cold February night in downtown Manhattan in 2002, when they realized they both dreamed of opening their own professional theatre, Mark and Bethany Smith had married, moved to south Atlanta, and realized their dream with the opening of The Legacy Theatre in Tyrone, GA in November of 2006. The journey from dream to reality was not an easy one. While overseeing the building of the theatre, Mark juggled a full-time job with Landmark Christian School in Fairburn, and Bethany worked as a choreographer for Dorris Russell School of Performing Arts in Tyrone. Mark and Bethany credit the support of LCS, Steven Ball, owner of Dorris Russell, their current Sales/Marketing Manager, Dustin Lewis, visionary developers and contractors, as well as hundred of volunteers and financial supporters for the successful opening of Atlanta’s only full-time professional theatre, a for-profit venture. They also credit the city of Tyrone for providing them with a highly visible location off of Highway 74 between I-85 and Peachtree City. When asked what she thought the main reasons for the theatre’s success, Bethany Smith named two. “We wanted to bring back the rare ‘night out’ to the theatre by providing our patrons an elegant, comfortable state of the art facility, but we also had to provide the talent and production quality that people were used to seeing in Atlanta. We like to think we’ve given them both” The theatre has seen its share of successes in what will soon be it’s fourth year of existence. The Legacy was granted the World Premiere of Joe Landry’s Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play as well as the Regional Premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Dance. The theatre’s most recent success was the Song and Dance Regional Premiere of Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald’s Jen, deemed eligible for this year’s Suzie Bass Awards, John & Jen a first for the theatre. Their successful children’s theatre series and popular Broadway Workshop help make sure that a new generation of theatre goers will continue to frequent live theatre Vintage Hitchcock by Steve Thrasher in years to come. This summer the Legacy will bring High School Musical 2 to its stage and in 2010 look for great shows like My Way: A Tribute to Frank Sinatra and the too-seldom produced Baby to grace the stage.
