“Summertime and the livin’ is easy...” - Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin
A
s a child, June was my second favorite month of the year. In the Northeast (NYC, where I’m from), June meant
school was over, and the beaches were officially open.
June is also when we celebrate DAD - a son’s first Hero, a
daughter’s first Love.
In this issue of Atlantic Ave we look at the history of Father’s
Day. You’ll be surprised how it came to be and how relatively new it is as a recognized national day of observance.
Do you enjoy Thai food? We do! Our Restaurant Review this
month is House of Siam, and if you haven’t ventured in, we recommend you do! It is a full immersion Traditional Thai experi-
ence. The dishes are a work of art and the owners/servers wear clothing from their native Thailand.
Have you had the pleasure of meeting Elizabeth Burrows? She
is a legacy in Public Service and a shining star in her own right.
Read about what this incredible woman is doing for our community, and a bit about her personal life in our City Person feature. Schools Out for Summer!!! Keeping the kiddos active and
entertained can be a challenge. Delray Beach has many Camp op-
tions, as well as other activities to keep kids moving and learning. Check out Summer In Delray Beach for some suggestions. June is great - get out and enjoy our town. Hug your Dad ♥

Abbey Delray Resident’s Tireless Mission to Combat Kidney Disease
16 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
An Abbey Delray resident is on a quest to help the thousands of South Florida residents living with kidney disease. Ron London began his journey when he was diagnosed with the disease, and was told his kidneys were failing him. That was nine years ago. Since then, he’s undergone two years of dialysis and two transplants, after the first kidney failed. Ron says those were the toughest years of his life, but he saw hope through the eyes of fellow kidney disease survivors in his support group. Those were the people he turned to with questions, and he eventually became the person others would turn to for advice. For years, Ron has launched campaigns to help raise money for others who can’t afford their surgeries or dialysis. In all, he’s raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Kidney Association in South Florida.
That campaign continues at his new home at Abbey Delray, a Life Care community in Delray Beach, where he’s planning to launch new fundraisers this year. For more information on how to help or to learn more about his goals to raise awareness for kidney disease in Delray Beach, Chelsea March, at 913-317-2225 or cmarch@glynndevins.com.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in June for $50 or less.
ature is the best. The sound of clouds moving, plants growing and animals exploring is really intoxicating, and the outdoors is definitely my favorite place to fall into deep thought. June is Great Outdoors Month and there’s a great little spot to delve into: the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. It’s unlike any other place in Delray because you really feel like you’re in a maze of bonsai, sake and Japanese culture. The Morikami Sushi and Stroll is held Friday, June 10 and is a great way to end your week and start your weekend on a high note. It’s the beginning of summer and the perfect time to stroll with some sushi. Sake it to me! You are invited to explore the Japanese gardens, as well as indulge in Pan-Asian cuisine from the café, shop in the museum store and enjoy roaring taiko drum performanecs by Fushu Daiko at 6:30 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 8 p.m. The Sushi and Stroll is held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $6-8, with another $2 for the drum performances. It’s a great spot to enjoy the sunset, spark up a great conversation and peruse the tranquil gardens, so make sure you get there early to beat the crowds. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road. Visit www.morikami.org or call (561) 495-0233 for more information.

activity for your family or friends, or want to get a little more color in your life, lace up the running shoes because you’ve got some fun running to do. The First Annual Cason Color 5K and Fun Run is held Saturday, June 25 and you’re invited to take part in the first electrifying, family-center, colorful athletic event in Delray Beach. I can’t believe we haven’t had one of these fun runs sooner! You can run – or walk – through a series of color zones with LED lights and music. Running isn’t always fun but this sure sounds like three miles of a good time, especially because you’ll be helping people with every step. Proceeds from this event benefit four local non-profits that contribute every day to our community: Habitat for Humanity, The Achievement Center for Children and Families, the Delray Beach Literacy Program, and Cason United Methodist Church. Registration is $35 per person and the event begins at 6:30 a.m. at Anchor Park, which is the perfect backdrop for a running excursion. I’ll smile for that! Anchor Park is located at 340 S. Ocean Blvd. Visit www.casonumc.org or call (561) 276-5302.

pace: a continuous area or expanse that is free, available, or unoccupied. But is it? I am intrigued by space and what is out there in the universe, so hopefully in my lifetime we’ll find out even more information. If you were faced with visitors from space, would you heed their advice and rebuild or restructure your life? June is Rebuild Your Life Month and if you’re into sci-fi’s, mark your calen-
dar for The Day the Earth Stood Still. WLRN Radio Theater presents this science fiction classic where Klaatu, an alien, and his mighty robot Gort land their spacecraft on Cold Warera Earth just after the end of World War II and tell the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets. This came out in 1951 so can you just imagine the thought process of people around 65 years ago as to outer space, aliens and the future? I can’t wait to find out! The show (and the rest in the sci-fi series) is an accurate recreation of radio plays from the golden age of radio, with professional actors performing multiple roles and utilizing authentic sound effect devices. They are very interactive, with the audience providing many of the sound effects themselves. Admission is $15-25 per person and the show is held at the Crest Theatre on Friday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. Visit www.oldschoolsquare.org or call (561) 243-7922 for more information and to purchase tickets.

ven though “season” is over in Delray, we can still keep our GreenMarket! June is National Fruit and Veggies Month and also the first month of the summer GreenMarket. Held Saturday, June 4 in the Tennis Center parking lot, you’ll be privy to the season’s freshest veggies, fruits, plants, homemade goodies and more, on just a slightly smaller scale than the standard GreenMarket. Taking advantage of the GreenMarket is not only a great way to continue to get your locally sourced food, but also a great way to support your local vendors. You can even ride your bike for exercise and enjoy lunch downtown so you can make it a complete Saturday event. The sun is out, the streets are less busy and that just means there’s more GreenMarket to go around for the summer visitors and us locals. The GreenMarket is held 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Saturday from June 4 through August 20, and let’s not forget that it’s pet friendly and always features entertainment! There’s no better way to get your fix on the freshest food around and also enjoy the beautiful summer weather. The Tennis Center is located at 201 W. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.delraycra.org or call (561) 276-8558 for more information.

e live on a peninsula so it’s undoubted that we must love the ocean. I know I do. Sand, sun, saltwater – what’s not to love? June is National Oceans Month and if you want to take a deeper dive into land and sea, plan to attend the Sandoway Discovery Center Beach Walk. Held Saturday, June 11 at 9 a.m., you’re invited to take a guided walk of the beach and investigate plants on the dunes, animals found on the beach and in the water, as well as learn about interactions of the land and sea. It’s a great way to get more knowledge about the beach and hopefully learn answers to the questions we always ask like “Woah, what is that animal?!” or “I wonder how old this shell is!” The hour-long program is only $8 per person and includes admission to the nature center after the walk, so it’s a double whammy of knowledge. Bring your beach blanket and bathing suit for some fun in the sun afterward and share your nautical knowledge with your beach neighbors. The Sandoway House Nature Center is located at 142 S. Ocean Blvd. Visit www.sandowayhouse.org or call (561) 274-7263 for more information.

Gotta See

June 3 Want to see what Emilia Clarke looks like without the platinum wig she wears in “Game of Thrones?” You’ll find out in “Me Before You,” a drama based on Jojo Moyes best-selling novel. Clarke plays Louisa Clark, a 26-yearold woman who works hard to help support her family in the English countryside. Her life will change when she takes a position to a young, wealthy banker, Will Traynor (Sam Clafin), who lives in a virtual castle. Will is embittered because he is paralyzed and in a wheelchair from a car accident. Louisa tries to convince him life is worth living. I’ll wager she does. The Teenage Mutant Turtles are back in “Out of the Shadows,” a sequel to the 2014 hit. Paramount Pictures doesn’t say much about the plot beyond “more adventures by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael.” Megan Fox is in the cast as April O’Neil. Stephen Arnell is Casey Jones. Will Arnett is Victor Fenwick and Tyler Perry is Baxter Stockman. Dave Green (“Earth to Echo”) directs.
Blake Lively “the shallows”
Andy Samberg as a rapper/pop star? Yep, Samberg plays a character named Conner4Real in “Popstar: Never Stop Stopping,” a comedy by Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who direct and are also in the cast. When Conner4Real’s second album flops, everyone goes into a tizzy. Sarah Silverman, Ted Meadows and Maya Rudolph co-star. June 10 “WarCraft” is another movie based on a video game. In the once peaceful realm of Azeroth, a band of Orc warriors attack, bent on domination. The cast includes Paula Patton, Travis Fimmel, Ben Foster and Dominic Cooper. Duncan Jones (“Source Code”) directs. In “The Conjuring 2: The Endfield Experiment,” Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles as paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren. Their latest case takes them to North London, where a single mom with four children is being plagued by malicious spirits. James Wan, who directed the original and “Furious 7,” returns. In yet another sequel, “Now You See Me 2” reunites the Four Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Lizzy Caplan) for their most challenging heist caper yet when they are forced into it by tech whiz kid Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe). Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher and Morgan Freeman are also featured. Jon Chu (“Justin Bieber’s Believe”) directs. June 17 “Finding Dory” is also known as “Finding Nemo 2.” Yes, it is a sequel to the 2003 Academy Award-winning animated feature. Ellen DeGeneres returns to voice Dory, the forgetful blue tang who lives with Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence). The trio
embarks on a journey to California’s Marine Life Institute to find Dory’s mother (Diane Keaton) and father (Eugene Levy). They are aided by cranky octopus Hank (Ed O’Neill), Beluga whale Bailey (Ty Burrell) and a nearsighted whale shark named Destiny (Kaitlin Olson). Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson a bullied dweeb? That is the back story of “Central Intelligence,” where Johnson grows up to be a lethal CIA agent named Bob Stone. At a high school reunion, Stone persuades a meek classmate, Calvin (Kevin Hart) to help him out on his latest mission. Havoc ensues. Aaron Paul and Amy Ryan co-star. Rawson Marshal Thurber (“Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”) directs. June 24 As if we did not have enough sequels already, we have “Independence Day Resurgence,” again directed by Roland Emmerich. Will Smith is out. In his place is Jesse Usher, who plays his stepson. Books of a Feather
by Kate Carlisle Released June 7, 2016 From the New York Times bestselling author of “Ripped from the Pages”, San Francisco book-restoration expert Brooklyn Wainwright’s latest project is for the birds, but it may have her running for her life. . . . Brooklyn’s friend Ian runs the Covington Library, which is hosting an exhibit featuring John James Audubon’s massive masterpiece, Birds of America, currently on loan from an Arab sheik. During the gala celebrating the book, she is approached by Jared Mulrooney, the president of the National Birdwatchers Society, who urgently needs Brooklyn’s skilled hands to repair a less high-profile book of Audubon drawings that’s fallen victim to spilled wine. At the same party, Brooklyn is flying high after she’s asked to refurbish and appraise a rare copy of Poor Richard’s Almanac. But everything runs afoul later that evening when Mulrooney’s body is discovered in the library. Rumors fly about a motive for murder. Perhaps Mulrooney wanted to sink his claws into the pricey Audubon book, but Brooklyn believes the man died fighting off a daring thief. Soon more troubles ruffle Brooklyn’s feathers. Her parents pop in for a visit with an unsavory friend in tow, and there’s a strange man on her tail. With danger beginning to circle Brooklyn’s every move, it’s clear she must find answers before things really go south . . .

Vinegar Girl
by Anne Tyle Released June 21, 2016 Pulitzer Prize winner and American master Anne Tyler brings us an inspired, witty and irresistible contemporary take on one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. Kate Battista feels stuck. How did she end up running house and home for her eccentric scientist father and uppity, pretty younger sister Bunny? Plus, she’s always in trouble at work – her preschool charges adore her, but their parents don’t always appreciate her unusual opinions and forthright manner. Dr. Battista has other problems. After years out in the academic wilderness, he is on the verge of a breakthrough. His research could help millions. There’s only one problem: his brilliant young lab assistant, Pyotr, is about to be deported. And without Pyotr, all would be lost. When Dr. Battista cooks up an outrageous plan that will enable Pyotr to stay in the country, he’s relying – as usual – on Kate to help him. Kate is furious: this time he’s really asking too much. But will she be able to resist the two men’s touchingly ludicrous campaign to bring her around?
First Comes Love
by Emily Giffin Released June 28, 2016 In this dazzling new novel, Emily Giffin, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of “Something Borrowed,” “Where We Belong,” and “The One & Only” introduces a pair of sisters who find themselves at a crossroads. Growing up, Josie and Meredith Garland shared a loving, if sometimes contentious relationship. Josie was impulsive, spirited, and outgoing; Meredith hardworking, thoughtful, and reserved. When tragedy strikes their family, their different responses to the event splinter their delicate bond. Fifteen years later, Josie and Meredith are in their late thirties, following very different paths. Josie, a first grade teacher, is single—and this close to swearing off dating for good. What she wants more than the right guy, however, is to become a mother—a feeling that is heightened when her ex-boyfriend’s daughter ends up in her class. Determined to have the future she’s always wanted, Josie decides to take matters into her own hands. On the outside, Meredith is the model daughter with the perfect life. A successful attorney, she’s married to a wonderful man, and together they’re raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Yet lately, Meredith feels dissatisfied and restless, secretly wondering if she chose the life that was expected of her rather than the one she truly desired. As the anniversary of their tragedy looms and painful secrets from the past begin to surface, Josie and Meredith must not only confront the issues that divide them, but also come to terms with their own choices. In their journey toward understanding and forgiveness, both sisters discover they need each other more than they knew . . . and that in the recipe for true happiness, love always comes first. Emotionally honest and utterly enthralling, “First Comes Love” is a story about family, friendship, and the courage to follow your own heart—wherever that may lead.

Garrison Keillor makes me feel better about growing older. Keillor, 73, made a “Farewell Tour” stop at Broward Center for the Arts. After 42 years with the NPR program “Prairie Home Companion,” Keillor is calling it quits. It is amazing how entertaining one man, occasionally accompanied on piano by his musical director Richard Dworsky, can be so entrancing. Keillor is a storyteller; a master storyteller, and he has a decent baritone voice and an encyclopedic knowledge of American music. Keillor comes from a state I don’t know much about: Minnesota. In fact I don’t know much about America’s heartland, but thanks to Keillor I have developed a fondness for the fictional Lake Woebegon, where “all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children
are above average.” I was surprised at how religious Keillor’s show was. He was brought up Lutheran, but his hymns are familiar to most of us. Surely everyone knows “My Country Tis of Thee,” “Amazing Grace,” “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.” Keillor is proudly old-fashioned. He boycotts bottled water. He still reads print newspapers. He is bewildered by cash cards. Keillor confesses he intended to be a “serious writer.” I would argue he has provided a greater public service through his whimsical stories of Lake Woebegon. “Prairie Home Companion” will go on with a new host. I suspect Keillor will go on performing in one form or another. He is after all an American institution.

Tennis Injuries:
Cutting Edge Treatments and Prevention Strategies
{
By Dr. John Conde
Studies have shown that 2/3 of tennis injuries are due to overuse and the other 1/3 is due to traumatic injuries. For completive tennis players overuse injuries are the most common and for the novice players, the acute injury variety is most prevalent. Tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis, and chondromalacia patella are of the most notable injuries in tennis.
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is by far one of the most prevalent injuries in tennis. It is caused by the micro-tearing of the extensor group muscles of the elbow. These muscles are located on the thumb side of the elbow and allow us to bring our wrist back and side to side. Scar tissue can form in the muscle belly which can compress important nerves and blood vessels. It typically occurs secondarily to the use of an aluminum racquet, incorrect grip measurement, improper backhand technique, excess weight of the racquet, and due to too much tension in the strings. Rotator cuff tendonitis is also caused by micro-tearing in the belly of the muscle. The muscles involved are the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder which originate in the shoulder blade (scapula) and attach to the upper arm (humerus). Typically we see this occur with players who serve with an elbow to side angle of less than 90 degrees. Due to the improper mechanics of the serve it typically also requires the player to serve repeatedly. A byproduct of the constant running and cutting in tennis is anterior (front) knee pain located deep, beneath the knee cap (patella). The patella fails to track or move correctly within the knee resulting in frictional forces applied to the lower femur bone and subsequent braking off of small pieces of cartilage. This can lead to a condition called chondromalacia patella. Pain is usually experienced when going up stairs and stopping abruptly while running. The primary goals in treating these disorders are to reduce inflammation, break 46 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
up the fibrotic adhesions (scar tissue), strengthen surrounding musculature and neurological pathways, and restore proper joint motion. This entails some simple procedures including myofascial release, passive and active mobilization, isometric and isotonic strengthening, and joint manipulation (adjustment). New cutting edge procedures involve the use of high power class IV lasers which accelerate tissue healing by nearly tenfold and the use of mirrors in a technique termed mirror imaging technique which attempts to strengthen the neurological and immune pathways in the affected limb. In addition, cross cord applications and eccentric fast stretching are novel procedures which decrease the healing time. In terms of nutrition, supplementing with proteolytic enzymes and essential fatty acids will help to reduce inflammation and break down scar tissue. Sticking to an anti-inflammatory, low glycemic index diet will also help to reduce inflammation and insulin surges which can promote neurological degeneration Lastly, prevention is the key to avoiding injury all together. Here are some key tips to increase your longevity and effectiveness on the court: 1. Utilize a ceramic or graphite racquet with reduced vibration. 2. Choose a lighter racquet-10.5-11.5 oz. 3. Make sure you have a correct grip measrement. 4. Use natural gut strings, which have tension 3-5lbs below what an athlete is used to.
5. Use proper backhand technique. 6. Warm up prior to playing. 7. Focus on core muscle training. 8. Keep your spine in correct alignment. 9. Strengthen lower extremity musculature. 10. Take multivitamin with plenty of anti-oxidants. A real cutting edge procedure is termed motor imaging technique. In essence the athlete visualizes in sets and repetition format, a learned movement such as the various movements on the tennis court. The visualization must be very detailed in nature. Scientifically, the neurological pathways involved in the particular movement are enhanced and other non-pertinent pathways inhibited. This activity is gaining great notoriety as many of the top athletes in the world are incorporating this into their treatment regimen. Vanquish Your Imperfections
{
By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
As summer fades in South Florida, the zest for diet, exercise and alluring shape only accelerates. “If I could just be one size smaller,” is not reserved for swimsuits. We are a people addicted to healthy, fit bodies and beautiful contours, and now, those of us who pine for any easy fix to love handles, muffin tops and man boobs have a resource that seems too good to be true.
The technology is called Vanquish, a completely non-invasive procedure to annihilate fat cells using radio frequency. Dermatology and Laser Medicine claim it as an enormous breakthrough. There is no surgery involved and no needles are required; in fact, the procedure is completely pain free. The machine never even touches the patient’s skin. Deep tissue heating without damaging skin or muscle effects measurable results in this FDA approved approach to the destruction of fat cells. Results can be seen after just four sessions of forty-five minutes each. Vanquish fat melting sessions are controlled and comfortable. The dermatologist will adjust the laser to hover over the areas of the body to be treated, never touching the machine to the skin. The heat produced from the laser will feel warm, never hot, and will resemble the sensation of a heating pad on the belly. Sensors built into the device “tune” the patient’s fat and customize the energy required for each patient’s treatment session. The science involved is simple. Once the fat cells have been overheated, they die off and are filtered through the lymphatic system, metabolized in the liver and then excreted through urine. For this process to be effective, patients are asked to drink plenty of water before and after the procedure, aiding in the elimination of dead fat. Some minimal redness may occur at the site of the procedure, but swelling is extremely unlikely. 48 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Patients are not reporting any contraindications. They are losing two to four inches after four treatments without changing their diets or increasing exercise. Of course there are skeptics, but the ease of delivery for Vanquish speaks bundles about its ability to please patients. Unlike the other fat buster technologies of the last thirty years, treatments don’t involve downtime or discomfort for the patient. Liposuction, while capable of eradicating larger volumes of fat, requires anesthesia and surgery and sometimes delivers uneven results. Ultrasound, in which a hand piece is moved around the body to destroy fat with deep-diving sound waves, generally requires pain medication. Cryotherapthy, which freezes fat cells, does work, but is a slow process for both the patient
and the technician and requires a significant time commitment. Vanquish, from all sides, seems to be the fat busting venue of the future. Vanquish is new, exciting and full of promise. Today it is eliminating beer bellies and love handles. Tomorrow it will reach to contour flabby arms and fatty necks. From the point of view of the dermatologist, this is very “cool” technology; from the point of view of the patient, this may be the hottest technique on the planet for looking good. Dr. Thomas C. Not sleeping restfully?
{
BY Daniel Torres, DMD
If you snore heavily, wake up tired or are sleepy during the day, you might want to see your dentist.
We’ve all woken up from a night’s sleep where we felt like we could have gone right back to sleep. However, if you or someone you know feels like this all the time, you might want to dig deeper into the problem so you can find a solution. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a very common and potentially life-threatening medical disorder that occurs when the soft tissue in a person’s throat repeatedly collapses and blocks the airway during sleep. These partial reductions and complete pauses in breathing typically last between 10 and 30 seconds, but can persist for one minute or longer. These pauses can happen 100 times per night, leading to abrupt reductions in blood oxygen levels causing less oxygen being delivered to your organs, including the heart and brain. The brain alerts the body about the lack of oxygen, causing brief arousal from sleep that restores normal breathing, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. The result is a fragmented quality of sleep that often leads to excessive daytime sleepiness. Untreated OSA increases your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, depression, memory loss and more. Sleep apnea patients are often older, obese and have thick necks, over the age of 65 and smoke, but men and women of any age or body type can suffer from the condition. Additionally, the sleep disorder progressively worsens with age and weight gain, but there is a solution. Dentists play an important role in helping diagnose and treat sleep disorders, and have pioneered the use of oral appliance therapy for the treatment of sleep apnea and sleep related breathing disorders. Custom-made oral appliances are an affordable, more comfortable solution to OSA than Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). The CPAP 50 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
device is a mask-like machine, worn during sleeping, that provides a constant stream of air that keeps your breathing passages open by blowing air into a mask that covers the nose and mouth. Most patients find the CPAP to be incredibly uncomfortable for trying to fall asleep and staying asleep. An oral appliance, however, is a device worn in the mouth only during sleep, repositioning the tongue and lower jaw forward to maintain an open airway, without sleeping with a mask and tubes connected to you like with the CPAP. Dentists trained in dental sleep medicine know how to select, fabricate, fit and adjust these devices, which look like a mouth guard or retainer, to help patients breathe freely during sleep. With
an oral appliance, dentists can minimize or eliminate the symptoms of sleep apnea in mild to moderate cases. In order to diagnose and treat sleep disorders, make an appointment with a dentist who is skilled in this area and who can provide you with the best treatment possible so you can breathe easy. This gives you, your loved ones, family members and friends an avenue for getting a good night’s sleep and reduces your risk for having heart problems or fatigue. Heavy Weights, Big Results
{
By Ashley Sica
Ladies, are you one of those women who is afraid to pick up a heavy weight? And I don’t mean a 60lb dumbbell — I’m talking 10lb or more, in fear of getting “big and bulky?” As a fitness professional I often hear this fear from women time and time again.
They want to reshape their bodies, burn fat and look fabulous but are afraid to lift more than 10lbs, thinking they will suddenly appear with bigger muscles than their husband. Ladies, this is absolutely not true and a long time myth. Lets take a look at why in simple terms. In order to hypertrophy your muscles in a manner that become “big and bulky” you would need to consume enormous amounts of calories each day. Meaning that you must eat more calories than your body burns off, creating what is called a caloric surplus. Proper nutrition absolutely has to come into play when adding muscle. Unless you are eating the right amounts of extra carbohydrates, fats and proteins it would be very hard to reach your fear of becoming “big and bulky!” Women’s bodies are not biologically inclined to carry large amounts of muscles; unlike fat, which is an entire different story. Another factor that comes into play when putting on muscle is your repetition range. In order for muscle to tear, repair and grow you need to lift heavy and keep your rep range below 12, usually 6-10 reps per set. You’re not going to create “bulky” muscles from doing 15+ reps, which most women normally do. On top of the repetition range, the weight you are lifting has to be heavy, and I can promise you are not going to get big from lifting 15 pounds. If anything, your arms will jiggle less and your tush will become tighter! Sounds nice, right? In order to re-shape your body you must lift enough weight to shock your muscles to create change and tiny weights for 20 reps is not going to get the job done. The bulky women you are afraid of looking like are usually taking some kind of special “supplement.” 52 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Which brings me to my next point. The majority of women who have larger than average “bulky” muscles usually use some type of pharmaceutical aid to get them there. I can assure you they didn’t get there from lifting heavy weights alone, except for the few genetically gifted ones out there. So rest assured the only thing you can benefit from lifting heavier weights is a well shaped tight body! Still afraid of picking up that weight? Here are some more tidbits for you! Did you know that adding two weight training sessions a week can reduce overall body fat by about 3 percentage points in just 10 weeks, even if you don’t cut a single calorie. That translates to as much as three inches total off your waist and hips. A study in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that women who completed an hour
long strength training workout burned an average of 100 more calories in the 24 hours afterward than they did when they hadn’t lifted weights. At three sessions a week, that’s 15,600 calories a year, or about four and a half pounds of fat….without having to move a muscle. Muscle burns up calories even when you’re not in the gym. Replace 10 pounds of fat with 10 pounds of lean muscle and you’ll burn an additional 25 to 50 calories a day without even trying. That’s what I call Burning At Rest! Have no fear ladies, pick up some weight and lift! I can promise the results will amaze you. Father’s Day Why We Honor Fathers By Debbi Miller Gutierrez
{
The third Sunday each June is reserved for fathers. Everywhere loving sons and daughters plan picnics, barbecues, and outings to demonstrate their gratitude for having strong, loving, and caring fathers in their lives. Where flowers and candy dominate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day gifts are more likely to include sports equipment, tools, and the good old traditional tie.
54 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
A brief history of Father’s Day Father’s Day was created almost simultaneously in the early 1900s by two women on opposite sides of the United States. In 1908, West Virginian Grace Golden Clayton asked her minister for a church service to commemorate the deaths of 360 men in a disastrous mine explosion, which left 210 families fatherless. In 1909 Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired to celebrate fatherhood while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in Spokane, Washington. Though the West Virginia commemoration of fatherhood came in response to the tragic loss of numerous fathers, the Washington celebration grew from a grateful daughter’s desire to honor the father who had raised her after her mother’s early death. Because Dodd’s father was born in June, Father’s Day soon became a recurring celebration on the third Sunday of June. Though many American families celebrated Father’s Day over the ensuing decades, it took over 60 years to make it official. Unlike Mother’s Day, which was first celebrated in the US in 1905 and officially recognized in 1914 by Woodrow Wilson, Father’s Day was not designated as a national observance until 1972.
The importance of fathers in the family A child that has an actively involved father is exponentially more successful in every aspect of his life. Even if the father is a stepfather, adoptive father, or an unrelated male in the home taking on the father role, the well-fathered child develops socially, intellectually, and physically better than a child who has no father present or a father who is emotionally unavailable. Even if there is no male figure living in the home, a father who interacts regularly with his children or a volunteer father figure, such as through the Big Brother program, can have a decidedly positive impact on a child’s life outcomes.
Fathers, Sons, and Daughters In addition to the obvious role fathers play in providing a good model as a father and husband, a father actively involved in his son’s life can also play an essential part in promoting self-esteem building behaviors. A strong positive father figure taking an interest in his son’s activities and including him in his daily life (taking his son to work or out running errands) can lead to decreased aggression and risk-taking behaviors outside the home. Boys who
have no male role model may try to fill this need for attachment by finding unsuitable companions and exhibiting attention-getting behaviors. Daughters receive many benefits from having a positive male role model in their lives. Studies have shown that a girl with an involved father present in her early childhood has a later onset of puberty and a decreased likelihood of early pregnancy. Fathers demonstrate masculinity, moral values, and social skills. They teach their son what it means to be a man, a husband, and a father, and their daughters what to look for in a husband. Fathers play an essential role in the family and with effort and will can learn to be as effective as possible in promoting positive characteristics in their children’s future.
An effective father: • Is actively involved with his child A father who is involved in his child’s day-to-day activities naturally gets to
know who else is involved with his child— friends, teachers, bus drivers, coaches, and neighbors. This not only helps the child feel connected on every level, but allows the father to be aware of the positive and negative influences in his child’s surroundings. • Listens to his child A father who actively listens to his child not only shows he is interested in what the child has to say, but may also pick up on warning signs that the child is in distress. Focusing on the child’s conversation, not just nodding and smiling while reading the newspaper, is essential to building the child’s feeling of validation. • Spends time with his child Almost 40% of American children don’t live with their fathers. This does not mean, however, that fathers cannot play an effective role in the lives of their children. Regularly scheduled visits and planned activities can benefit children almost as much as daily interaction. • Supports his child Supporting their children—emotionally, intellectually, financially, and spiritually— effective fathers help their children feel secure, develop self-respect and self-efficacy, and promote maturity, empathy, and the ability to say no in questionable situations. • Gives his child unconditional love Making sure his child knows he loves him or her by smiling, hugging, giving genuine and thoughtful compliments, or just sitting quietly together watching the sun set, an effective father can express his affection openly. • Disciplines his child in appropriate ways An effective father sets rules and boundaries that are age and life-stage appropriate for his child. He can enforce these rules firmly but gently without anger or force. • Reacts to situations in a consistent manner Although an effective father can modify his reactions to circumstances in respect to his child’s age and developmental stage, he attempts to keep consequences and reactions consistent. Knowing what to expect is fundamental to a child’s feeling of stability and security. Fathers are so much more than just breadwinners for the family. They are nurturers, caregivers, role models, support systems, and teachers. Effective fathers provide their children with a life-long feeling of security, self-efficacy, and validation—qualities that help children become strong, independent, healthy adults. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | June 2016 55

Balancing Beauty And Well-Being
ONE AVEDA SALON By diane feen
New invati men hair care system
{
One Aveda Salon is doing what comes naturally. And that’s exactly what their namesake had in mind when they created eco-friendly organic health products and beauty regimes.
That’s what keeps their client base as loyal as a newborn Labrador. It’s also what keeps salons like One Aveda busy and constantly moving in a sustainable yet beautifying direction. Clients rave about their products but also about their services that range from coloring, cutting, styling, hair extensions, makeup and other services. Just ask Jeanette. “Aveda is top-notch and One Aveda is no exception. Sarah is a terrific stylist, skilled and very personable. Everyone in the salon is friendly and helpful, and it’s easy to get an appointment that works for your schedule. I highly recommend them!” Loyal client Bonnie also has a similar opinion on this eco-friendly salon. “It’s always a pleasure to get all my hair needs at One Aveda Salon. The staff is very friendly and I think they’re the best hair salon in Delray. Even if you don’t live close by it’s worth the trip. Thank you One Aveda for being the best!” The fearless leader - and owner of One Aveda - is Sue Anger. The former model is a walking embodiment of the Aveda signature of natural beauty. She also happens to be an Aveda educator, master stylist and colorist. Sue oversees new talent and mentors new stylists so they understand the Aveda approach to beautification and are in sync with the high standards of the brand. These high standards continue to flow into new products that are good for the planet and the person. One of the most important for summer is their “Daily light Guard™ Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen. derived. You can tell the difference the moment you put it on. This product is sheer, not sticky and doesn’t have the insidious chemicals that permeate other sunscreens. It also protects against environmental pollution and has a coating that makes zinc oxide and titanium dioxide glide on sheer and smooth. Their new Beautifying Radiance Polish is made of mineral-rich salt crystals in a moisturizing plant oil blend that exfoliates the skin with flower and plant essences. It’s made with certified organic sunflower, safflower and olive oils such as organic rosemary, lavender and bergamot. Just recently “O” Magazine touted the benefits of Aveda’s Stress Fix Composition Oil™ because it softens and nourishes the body, bath and scalp and comes in organic Lavender and Clary
Sage from the French Alps. From a top perspective One Aveda is following the curve when it comes to color, cutting and hair styling. It’s what makes their shop so popular and what keeps clients clamoring for the Aveda way. Their products are naturally derived with plant oils that leave the hair glowing and soft. “We’re using a lot of Prism Coloring and Balayage Techniques on our clients because they add a variety of contrasting colors and dimension to compliments clients’ natural hair color. We custom make the color for each person so it is uplifting to add beauty and highlight their features and skin tone.” One Aveda stylists attend conferences and are always in the know about the latest hair styles and color techniques. the Bob and Blades (a razor technique for movement) and the Lob (the long Bob) are what’s on tap for hairstyles. The newest trend for young people is color. “Everyone is embracing themselves and bringing out their true colors. It might be royal blue or purple,” said Manager Ariel. Beauty, as we all know, is not confined to women. Aveda knows that very well. That’s why they recently came out with a new line of products (sold at One Aveda) called “Invati Men™. The Nourishing Exfoliating Shampoo exfoliates refreshes and conditions the scalp to strengthen thinning hair. The Invati Men™ Scalp Revitalizer thickens the hair at the root and invigorates the scalp. It also reduces hair loss, makes hair feel stronger and look thicker. “We sell a lot of Invati Men™ products to men because they want stronger thicker hair in a natural way without chemicals. Many of our products have Turmeric as an active ingredient,” said Sue. That’s the beauty of going to One Aveda. They imbibe the Aveda culture that takes it inspiration from nature and knows that nature is not merely something to be cherished and protected, but emulated as a model of sustainability. If you want to be a part of this growing Salon, One Aveda is looking to expand their team of stylists. They welcome newcomers and will train you in the Aveda way. All are welcome. Brilliance On Hand
DIAMONDS EAST INTERNATIONAL By diane feen
Not only do they have the largest selection of beautiful diamond wedding rings and engagement rings, but they will help you find one with the “wow” factor you demand. Diamonds by nature have a sparkle element that dazzles the eye, but you need to make sure you’re buying a good diamond. That’s where the owners of Diamonds East come in first place. “We have a lot of young people coming here for wedding rings and engagement rings and we make sure we educate our customers with the four C’s – Color, Clar-

Luxury knows no bounds, which is why the owners of Diamonds East International continue to offer the most luxurious diamonds and prestigious watches the market has to offer.
ity, Cut and Carat Weight. We also make sure they are comfortable and have fun shopping here,” said Liz, who presides over some of the most dazzling of classy and classic diamond rings in South Florida. The diamonds sold at Diamonds East are all certified by GIA and EGL and range from small diamond rings to very large ones. Let’s just say if you want to impress your neighbors (or your nemesis) with a very large wedding ring Diamonds East will make that happen. But it’s not just size that matters – its quality.
“We have people coming to shop here from New York, Miami and all over the US because we have the best selection of diamond rings, pre-owned and new luxury watches for men and women. We treat our customers well and our prices are below what most stores sell them for. We also stand behind all of our merchandise,” said owner Ken Mordechai. And their unique selection of diamonds and watches all have one thing in common - rare beauty. From an elegant diamond ring with brilliant halo mounting to a Rolex Submariner or Audemars Piquet watch, the jewelry at Diamonds East is unsurpassed. They also have meaningful pieces like the classic Cartier “Love Bracelet” in gold or diamonds. Their selection of beautiful diamond rings varies in size and dimension, but
they’re all equally as impressive. Some are round with brilliant center cut stones and a diamond halo, while others are pear shaped d’encrusted diamond settings with a split shank and halo (that weighs in at 6.99 karats). Diamonds – like all things of beauty – change with preference and time. Fifteen years ago the “Radiant Cut” (with triangular side stones) and “Princess Cut” (with round cut diamonds set into the ring band) were the most popular. Now the most sought after is the “Halo Mounting”. But that’s not to say that you can’t have the diamond shape of your dreams. “We have many different diamonds styles and mountings. We can show you the shapes and sizes of different diamond rings, but if you want something different we can change the mounting while you wait. We do all our own mounting on the premises so you can get the ring you love right away. We make it fun, it’s laid back here,” said Liz. Diamonds East also sees a rise in the demand for “Push Gifts,” which is a gift a husband gives to his wife after giving birth. For this auspicious occasion diamond earrings, necklaces or bracelets are the preference. Also popular are bride and groom gift giving right before the wedding ceremony. Wedding gifts tend to be luxury watches for men and are often purchased from Diamonds East because of their diverse selection of collectable antique, stunning designer watches from Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Piaget, Brietling, Jaeger LeCoultre, Panerai, and Chopard. Some are sporty others are elegant, but one thing for sure they’re all prestigious time keepers. According to Mordechai, the Wedding Gift is an important part of the wedding ritual today. “You can look at a marriage just like you would a Rolex, it’s timeless.” Part of this timeless elegance is that all their watchmakers are CW-21 certified and the retro or antique watches from estate
sales are often one-of-a-kind or rare finds. That’s only part of the Diamonds East story. They will repair your watch or jewelry, and you can trade yours in for something new that fits your current state of mind or lifestyle. “People often get tired of their jewelry or watches and want to trade them for something new. It might even be worth more over time,” said Mordechai. Mordechai is adamant that customers always get a good deal when buying at Diamonds East. “Most of our business is from word of mouth and referrals. The reason is that no one beats our prices. You’ll never hear a bad word about our customer service or our prices. We cater to our clients and assist them with all of their needs.” And it doesn’t have to be a large ring or top tier watch. “It doesn’t matter what your budget is, every customer is treated like royalty here,” said Mordechai, who added that diamond rings can range in price from $1,300 to six figures.
They also know how intimidating it can be to buy an engagement ring. That’s why they educate clients on everything they need to know about each diamond and each setting. Diamonds East is one of the largest jewelry wholesalers (and Estate Buyers) in South Florida. That explains why their selection of elegant time pieces and diamond engagement and wedding rings are the most coveted and precious. Come celebrate your love and partnership with a new diamond ring that will say what words cannot easily convey. And if you want to sell or buy a premium designer watch, Diamonds East is the only place to go. Diamonds East International 4251 N. There’s nothing ordinary about Our Boat House, you know why? Because this new home furnishings store with the coastal furniture and accessories is extraordinary.

Reclaimed wood dining table and natural rattan chairs
The furniture is outstanding, the mindset of the owners is beachy and eclectic, and the flow of nature is effortlessly transported from the sun and sea inland. That was the mission - and the mighty scope - of this family business started by Karen Marcil and Sister Lori Auer-Smith. The story goes like this: Karen’s Vero Beach home was decimated by the hurricane so her sister Lori helped rebuild (and design) her domestic domain. Since both girls grew up in “The Hamptons” their lifestyle and passion was solidly anchored by the azure simplicity and the authenticity of the Atlantic Ocean. This merger of talent, and search for the purest essence of style, has propelled them

from an online store to a 3,500-square-foot loft-like showroom in Delray Beach. “Our philosophy is to offer true nautical elements and a mix of styles, finishes and textures that all work together to distinguish your home from all others. By adding pops of sea-glass green, watery blues and sandy neutrals we re-create the relaxed feel of summer vacation right at home,” said Karen Their mission is truly accomplished in this new spacious yet joyful store highlighted by eco-friendly slip cover sofas, driftwood coffee tables and maritime twinkling lights. It’s hard not to get giddy among all this one-ofa-kind ethereal furniture that hails from the earth and sea. There are real driftwood coffee tables with glass tops and armchairs that combine the real with the surreal. One large comfy upholstered chair has circular driftwood accents with a Tibetan fur trimmed pillow that will beckon you to sit down or take it home. Nearby, a rectangular wood coffee table with earthy stones symmetrically arranged under glass makes it more a museum piece than mere furniture. There are also reclaimed wood dining tables with Rattan Bench seating, a bleached white coffee table with teak wood base and sea grass swivel chairs with navy and white ticking striped cushions. Add that to coral chandelier lighting and decorative fish traps from Bali and you have a serene setting that culls the finest elements of nature directly to your inner sanctum. “Our passion is to create homes that are welcoming and bring the essence of the sea into the home. That’s what led us to search for the most special, unique nautical beach-inspired furnishings we could find,” said Karen. This vision – and mission – was eternally cemented when Karen’s friends were wowed by her newly decorated home in Vero Beach. Karen and her sister didn’t just stop by a neighboring furniture store and load up the car. Quite to the contrary, it took a lot of
Custom sized and signed art
work, creativity and travel to find the right pieces with the harmonious feel they coveted. “It was like a treasure hunt. We found one-of-kind-pieces in our travels and on vacations. We scoured the country for things with an eclectic Hamptons’ character. It took us years.” But it won’t have to take you years to find these amazing sofas, chairs, decorative pillows, lighting, rugs made of recycled water bottles, sea themed artwork and synthetic wicker outdoor furniture. It will only require that you stroll over to 5th Avenue (South of Atlantic) and put your interior space and faith in their accomplished and dedicated creative hands. They’re definitely up for the challenge. “We want to share our special nautical finds and help homeowners and designers create a beach home that is comfortable for the entire family - a place to enjoy life and to nourish the soul.” They have accomplished this goal by searching the globe for washed reclaimed woods that mix the classics of rich woods, natural cottons and linens. An example of this is the large white slipcover sectional couch (called The Bar Harbor) with high back and soft cushions that let you nestle inside its nurturing nature. Grandchildren can sleep inside its warm cloth womb or guests can kick off their shoes and make themselves comfortable. “The mix of these elements creates a warm welcoming and timeless home that’s not trendy, but authentic. Whatever your personal taste - from contemporary to transitional - we can help you capture the drama and mood of the sea and create your own sea-inspired escape.” To augment the larger pieces are selective works of seafaring art by local artists. There are boat scenes, aquatic scenarios and ethereal background pieces to sooth and serenade your existence. There’s even a hanging bed with wood base, soft cotton
cushion seat and nautical pillows to accent its elegant stance. “Our mission is to make your home the most comfortable place on the planet. We also provide an elevated level of design and care – because we care,” adds Karen, whose sister-in-law Christina Auer runs the new Delray store. The entire crew that works at the Delray Our Boat House Store is upbeat, friendly, helpful and designer ready. A word of caution though, once you enter this loft like space with the high ceilings and environmental eye candy you may never want to leave. But that’s a good thing. “If you’re designing a house at the beach, or just want to bring the beach design back to your house, Our Boat House has the solution. We are your complete source for unique coastal style home furnishings - furniture, lighting, accessories and rugs inspired by the Salt, Sand and Sea.” Our Boat House works with designers and offers a Design Service to fulfill your domestic dreams and make your home a sanctuary to nurture your spirit and create harmony for all who enter. The open space in the facility allows for greater doctor-patient relationships
40 Years in the Making
Spodak Dental Group By Darien Arden

What it means to have a truly established business.
Yes, you can have a business that merely exists to make money. But, do you want to? Dr. Craig Spodak certainly didn’t and has spent the greater part of his professional career not only trying to change the field of dentistry, but also to change the world through the power of compassion. It’s been a long work in progress, but he wouldn’t change a thing.
Dr. Myles Spodak opened the Spodak Dental Group doors back in 1976 on West Atlantic Avenue. Even though Delray Beach was a quiet town, there was still a need for a quality, reliable and honest dentist. Dr. Myles was happy to serve his community and his patients, but it wasn’t until his son, Dr. Craig, joined the practice in 1998 that you could really see a difference. Dr. Craig had a different vision of how to run the family business and inherited the practice in 2006. He had a dream to change the way patients experience dental care and worked tirelessly to reinvent the patient perception of just how great a dental appointment could be. “It’s all about relationships,” said Dr. 70 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Craig Spodak, owner of Spodak Dental Group. “Patients want to feel like you really care about them, that their doctors and hygienists and dental team members are invested in their livelihood. The truth is, in our practice, we do. We all do.” A business can have the very best techniques, equipment, policies and procedures, but without the personal touch, it’s just a service. “A business should be more than what it does or what it makes. It’s about the ‘why’,” Dr. Craig said. “Our ‘why’ is to take the very best care of our patients and our community. To serve those who put their trust in us.” The Spodak Dental Group team has always seized the opportunity to give back,
Dr. Craig Spodak, Giancarlo Stanton and Dr. Myles Spodak at the 2015 All-Star Smiles Day
whether it be time, resources, money or in-kind donations. However, for their 40th Anniversary, they decided to make a nationwide impact with a mission to feed America’s hungry. Thus began the partnership with patient and friend, Tony Robbins, and Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief foundation. In honor of their 40th Anniversary, the team launched a “40 Days of Giving” campaign to raise $40,000 in the 40 days preceding the June 2 anniversary date, and will donate all monies to Feeding America. Tony Robbins will match the Group’s net proceeds, dollar for dollar, to ensure that 880,000 meals will be distributed through the network of food banks served by Feeding America. According to Feeding America, one in seven people in the United States struggles with hunger. Both Dr. Craig and Tony Robbins believe that no one should go hungry and have taken the pledge to help solve hunger. Every dollar raised through the program helps to secure and distribute 11 meals through the nation-wide network of member food banks, so all monies raised go directly where it’s needed most. “I’m grateful for Spodak Dental to join my 100 Million Meals challenge in partnership with Feeding America,” commented Tony Robbins. “Last year we provided 102 million meals to our neighbors in need. We’re going to do it again this year, and one of our most valued partners is my own family dentist, Spodak Dental Group. Our partnership will provide relief to those who struggle with hunger right here at home, as well as bring an increased awareness to this issue that affects so many.” Yes, the company began 40 years ago, but
Dr. Myles Spodak, Dr. Craig Spodak and Tony Robbins

to simply state that Spodak Dental Group has been established since 1976 is a great understatement. To be established merely means having been in existence for a long time and therefore recognized and generally accepted. However, to become an established business means that you’ve had to give back, share hardships as well as congratulations, and push toward a greater good for your community, all of which Spodak Dental Group has done since 1976. “A truly established business is entrenched in the community because it’s a virtuous circle: patients, team, community,” Dr. Craig said. “A business has to think locally and globally, regardless of how small or large the business. The team has to be pioneers of the positive growth and responsibility of the community and its members. The business cannot merely exist to make money. Without a doubt, it has to give back.” The future looks bright for the Spodak Dental Group team. They have set many wheels in motion, including creating a nonprofit to provide free dental care to under-
privileged children; crafting a community garden to teach local children about the importance of healthy and sustainable living; and providing complimentary dental care to military members and their families as part of Freedom Day USA. Spodak Dental Group has shown the Delray Beach community just how much it’s willing to give back and thank those who have grown with them. Let’s see what they are able to achieve in the next 40 years! Spodak Dental Group is a comprehensive dental destination providing all general and specialty services in one convenient, state-of-the-art, LEED Gold Certified facility. The team of General and Restorative Dentists, Endodontists, Periodontists, Prosthodontists, Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Anesthesiologists are uniquely equipped to treat all dental health needs. There is exciting public artwork and working artists throughout the district. Experience nature with your children without having to leave your hometown. Visit the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, located in suburban Delray Beach on the east side of Jog Road between Woolbright Road and Atlantic Avenue. The park was created on 50 acres of unused utility land and transformed into a recreation wetlands open to the pub-
lic with a three-quarter mile boardwalk that crosses between open water pond areas, emergent marsh areas, shallow shelves, and islands with shrubs and snags to foster nesting and roosting. This site is part of the South section of the Great Florida Birding Trail and offers many opportunities to observe birds in their natural habitats. Another unique park in the city is Atlantic Dunes Park, located one block north of Linton Blvd. on A1A, and is lifeguard supervised by the Ocean Rescue Division. You won’t find the cliché windmills or clowns here. On the ocean’s course, you’ll find beautiful fish statues, seashells and a magical mermaid. On the Everglades course, you might find quite a few bird statues and of course, life-like alligators! They will even bring beverages to you at your hole while you play!

This summer the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative invites you to have your Perfect Day in Delray.
The team responsible for marketing the city as a destination is launching its summer advertising campaign aimed at luring travelers in the somewhat slower summer and shoulder months, and it kicks off this month. The ads aim to showcase the almost infinite combinations of ways you can experience Delray Beach. Ads will spotlight real residents and describe how they spend their morning, noon and night providing insight to visitors on the various ways one can spend a whole day in Delray. “It’s a great way to show how locals spend their days and it gives visitors an idea of the specific places we like to go and things to do”, explains Stephanie Immelman, Executive Director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. After just seeing several of the advertising profiles it becomes obvious the city has a lot more to offer than one can experience in a single day. Whether it be enjoying some outdoor activity, dining at a favorite spot on the Ave or enjoying some live entertainment, the locals really know how to enjoy the city and it’s fun to read all the different variations, not to mention get new ideas for yourself. Hotels have jumped on board with the campaign, offering great deals and summer specials to allow visitors to stay longer and do more. With deep discounts and enticing packages it allows people who may not be able to stomach the prices during high season to have chance to experience the city. Delray Beach will be happening this summer and it’s a great place for a weekend visit. The town boasts two miles of some of the prettiest beach in Palm Beach County, but the beach is only the very beginning. This exciting, elegant and yet unpretentious oasis of the county has temptations to tantalize any temperament. With culture, sports, art, shopping, nightlife and much more, there are so many ways to enjoy a day in beautiful Delray. There is still time to participate so send in your perfect day and have it posted for all to see. Send a description of your day and a photo to tmazer@delraybeach.com. Public Servant Extraordinaire
ELIZABETH BURROWS By Diane Feen
{
If adults got report cards like they did in grade school Elizabeth Burrows’ would read, “She gets along well with others.”
But that’s only part of the story of a woman who has walked the corridors of Delray Beach City Hall since she was two-years-old. Though she was not officially employed at City Hall as a toddler, her mother Lula Butler was the Director of the Community Improvement Department. Her father Leonard worked for the city as well, and young Elizabeth imbibed this calling as part of her family legacy. Though her interests and vibrant spirit could easily have landed her in Beverly Hills or Manhattan, this Delray Beach native made the decision to follow in the footsteps of her impressive pedigree. “I pretty much grew up in City Hall but as a kid I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I just knew I was a big nerd, loved learning and experiencing new things,” said Burrows, who has been the Economic Development Manager of Delray Beach for the past two and a half years. When asked what her department does she quickly retorts, “We try to present a unified implementation of initiatives that will enhance the business activity within the entire city of Delray Beach.” Say what? In laymen’s terms that means Burrows and her colleagues try their best to help businesses improve their bottom line, get grants, change their geographic location (or improve existing ones), find out about permitting, networking, navigate bureaucracy and anything else that improves the entrepreneurial spirit of Delray. Often times bureaucrats tend to fit into a similar mold but Burrows is a free spirited brainiac who floats above the tide of ordinariness. She is charming, beautiful, brilliant and has all the components of a superstar (including the animal print stilettos) yet is as down to earth as a camp counselor. She first started working for the city when she was 17-years-old in the Records Department of the Delray Beach Police Department. After graduating University of Florida she worked for the Parks and Recreation after-
June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
school program. “I had to make it fun for the kids and create rules such as ‘no kicking, no hitting and be nice.’” Being nice is one of the hallmarks of this young woman, who has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from University of Miami, worked as marketing and administrative assistant at Old School Square and Marketing and Grant coordinator at the CRA. The panorama of goodness and graciousness that surrounds Burrows is palpable to those who know her. “Elizabeth Burrows is a shining star in Delray. If I could bottle her effervescence, smarts and sound mind, I’d go on Shark Tank and they’d fight over my product! She’s incredibly articulate, dependable and carries a great deal of joy along with a humble and collaborative spirit. Unlike many leaders who have fans and foes – Elizabeth has fans and more fans,” said Karen Granger, CEO and President of the Delray Chamber of Commerce. It’s easy to see why. “I feel compelled to give back. By working here I know I can make a difference in people’s lives, especially on a local level. People who chose public service do it as a calling. You don’t it because you’re going to get rich or because people will like you.” But the reality is that people do like Burrows, and it’s easy to see why. She’s charming and personable and has a sparkle that makes you want to be around her. Connor Lynch, COO of Plastridge Insurance couldn’t agree more. “Elizabeth is a beautiful and amazing mix of creativity and intellect. She is a positive force for bringing people together, is present to the needs of the community and has a vibrant energy that is easily felt when you’re with her! We are fortunate to have people like her willing to dedicate their career (and life) to working for our community.” Connor isn’t the only one who saw her golden aura on first glance. When she was seven-years-old she met Travis Burrows at summer camp in Delray and he pro-
fessed his love for her. Though she thought boys were icky at that moment in time Burrows feelings did not abate. “Travis told me he wanted to marry me when we were kids and I thought ‘oh yeah, that’s pretty funny.’” Fast forward 18 years and Burrows did put a ring on it. Elizabeth and Travis found each other (via Facebook) seven years ago and on their first date he declared, “You know I’m going to marry you.” Travis is indeed a man of his word. They married five years ago and have a two-yearold daughter, Naomi, who is obsessed with
sunglasses, music, water, and like her mom, is a brainiac in training. Burrows not only has a full robust family life, but is on the Young Professionals Association of Delray executive committee, the board of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative and is a trained facilitator of race relations study circles. She also sings (and is an active leader) at St. John Primitive Baptist Church. And, after five years of marriage Travis is still her number one fan. “My husband has a large tattoo of my name across his chest, my monogram tattooed on his ring finger, our
wedding date on one arm and our daughter’s name on the other.” It’s pretty easy to see that everyone who meets Burrows is enamored with her character and charisma. Some even see her as a long term asset to the city of Delray Beach. “Elizabeth has an incredible passion for Delray and has done a lot in our city, but I think we have yet to see the amazing impact she will make on the community,” adds Lynch. We agree. If there’s an “it” girl in Delray Beach public service today, we’re convinced it’s definitely Elizabeth Burrows. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | June 2016

Flavors Of Ecstasy
HOUSE OF SIAM By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman
{ 92
The restaurant business by nature is one that is never static. Restaurants, like celebrities, come and go with the tide. One day they’re in, the next day they’re out.
June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Dancing Eel Roll
That is not the case with House of Siam. They have been serving fresh homemade Thai food in Pineapple Grove for the past 17 years and have a loyal following that sees this restaurant as part of their extended culinary family. The reason is simply that the food is a reflection of the owner’s passion for maintaining a delicate balance of herbs, flavors and texture that reflects their homeland of Thailand. And it’s not just the food that ushers in this exotic tropical oasis. The servers wear colorful Thai dresses – called Chut Thai – that are wrapped around the body and adorned with jewelry and a beautiful headdress. Everyone flocks to House of Siam because the food is fresh, homemade and has integrity. It’s not often that a dish like the Siam House Sizzler will grace your table like it
Lobster Rangoon
does there. This stir fried dish comes with a choice of chicken, beef, shrimp, pork or tofu and is serenaded in a sweet savory sizzling sauce with diced cucumber, onion, red bell pepper topped with cashews and spinach in a fresh peanut sauce. Their Vegetable Eggplant with Basil is so popular that it’s often a specialty of the day – and for good reason. The eggplant is bathed in vegetables with a traditional flavor-filled Thai sauce (you can also get it with tofu, chicken, pork, beef or seafood). House of Siam is also renowned for their Duck dishes, including Roasted Duck, that’s de-boned and served crispy on a bed of mixed vegetables. For a pungent spicy palate there’s Siam Duck, and for the sweet ones among there’s Duck with Orange Honey Sauce. For Delray resident Debra Rosen House of Siam is like a home away from home. She’s been eating there for ten years and often dines outside among the lush palm trees with her pug named Aura. “They have the best food here. I love the Spicy Tuna Salad, the Aged Tofu and the Miami Heat Roll. The food is delicious and it’s one of my favorite restaurants,” said Rosen as she raced outside after picking up her meal on the go. There are a lot of people who feel the same way as Rosen. “House of Siam has some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had. The curry dishes are amazing and it’s a cozy great date spot. My fiancé and I like sitting around and chatting while we wait for our food. Trust me the food is worth the wait,” said James. He’s right. The food is fresh and made to order so it’s like being catered to like royalty. You can luxuriate in the outdoor flora and fauna and leisurely dine outside, or stay inside where the sights and sounds of Thailand permeate the premises like a soft breeze. That was always the master plan of owners Pian and Patrick. “Everything here is homemade and authentic. When we left Thailand we searched for an authentic Thai restaurant that would capture the flavors and tastes of the rich culture we left behind. We couldn’t
Shrimp Pineapple sweet & sour
Seafood Tom Kha
find such a place so we created one,” said Pian, who is always beautifully dressed in the authentic splendor of Thailand. Part of this homage to their homeland comes with unique Thai specialties like Chicken (tofu, shrimp or vegetable) Tom Kha Coconut Soup that is creamy and delicious, and Maine Lobster Rangoon served inside a crispy outer batter. Since variety is the spice of life – Pian and Patrick like to offer their guests a variety of different flavors and dishes from exotic locales. So to augment their Thai specialties they also offer Sushi specials and rolls. The Dancing Eel Roll is one of those dishes that make you wonder, “what happened to my food, did I eat the whole thing already?” Yes, it’s that good. House of Siam offers over 22 different fresh Sushi dishes. Their Sushi chef is expert at his craft and is always standing by to make your life just a little more exciting and flavorful. One of the most popular rolls is The Siam Lobster Roll made with whole lobster tail tempura, asparagus and cucumber with spicy mayo and eel sauce. There are also Sushi and Sashimi combination dishes for the vegetarian or seafood lover. The Sushi Boat is not only a sight to see but it’s filled with amazing sushi, sashimi and a California Roll.
Chicken Volcano Sizzler
Other popular dishes in the Thai tradition are homemade chicken and shrimp Dumplings, Summer Rolls, Young Coconut Curry in a fresh coconut with chicken or tofu, Volcano Sizzler and Pad Thai. We also love their wonderful Vegetable Fried Rice with fresh Golden Pineapple topped with cashew nuts. Whether you stop by for lunch or dinner chances are you will be charmed by the excellent Thai food set in front of you. The preparation is world class and the flavors will astound you with their intricate measure of devotion. If there’s a special sushi roll you want, but you don’t see it on the menu, just ask and it will be yours. With the summer upon us you might want to try their Thai Iced Tea and saunter inside for what could become your favorite meal. This off the Avenue restaurant has been named one of the Best Thai Restaurants in Delray and continues to be a favorite for locals and tourists. They also serve luscious dishes for Vegans and Vegetarians. There’s no pomp and circumstance and no long lines to navigate, just the down home splendor of food made with love and passion. HOW LONG ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO FOLLOW CERTAIN DIET REGIMENS?
W
e all have pets here…dogs, cats and others. We are all faced with health and medical challenges today. But what was it like in yesteryear? It’s interesting when we look at the types of problems and the solutions. If you search 50 years ago, veterinarians rarely saw cancer, dental, allergy and many other modern day health challenges. What has changed over this time period? Let’s look at diet first. We used to feed our carnivore pets plenty of meat, either canned or ours. Today, we find many pets are on a diet of dry products. How much meat is really in dry pet food? On average, dry kibble consists of less than 8% real meat according to reports from the pet food industry. So, what is YOUR pet carnivore eating and how does it influence their physiology? To have a healthy life, whether for yourself or your pet, it is about species appropriate nutrition for the life of that being. We often get questions from patrons asking how long their pets would need to consume an all-natural and REAL food diet and botanicals. Why would they even ask those questions when they should already know the answers? If you choose to have a carnivore as a pet, it is simple…they must have a meat
and animal based diet! We shouldn’t choose to convert them to something other than their physiological base. They will eventually die from deficiency and imbalances that their owners provided to them. Nature has given us the path we need to follow. Why do you buy and feed your pet a dog or cat food? Is there any reason to believe that we can create anything better than nature? Is baby food better than Mom’s milk and real foods that the older generation grew up on? We picked fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and berries from the yard, garden or purchased them at the market. Our meat and fish were fresh, usually from a special butcher or seafood shop. Today we speak of “dog food”, “cat food” and even “people food” as if this is the natural order of nutrition. The question is whether it is real food or not. Is it edible and nutritious or is it created from waste and unnatural products. The key factor is it needs to be species specific. The point is that we are making a life choice decision to provide our pets with optimal health. It is not about waiting until symptoms of a health challenge to develop or for a test result implying that something is wrong but rather being proactive to maintain their health ultimately through preven-
tion. Health is not about medicine, procedures or vaccines. It is about the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. If these are contaminated, the body constantly fights vehemently to bring it back to health. It has the inane capacity to create antibodies to fight harmful pathogens, produces agents that can segregate and neutralize toxins. It replaces dead, dying and diseased cells with healthy new ones when given the natural tools like a proper diet. We must be vigilant in our quest to educate ourselves in the proper care of our pets. The source is not from the viewpoint of medicine or from that of a manufactured brand of food, but rather from the bodies’ natural essence and being, the way nature designed their physiology. For a good source of information on the uses of all natural diets, herbs and botanicals we recommend visiting, www.BioCompleteNaturalDiet.com Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe. com radio show. ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card
Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.
By Stephen Chrisanthus
The reach of the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has now gone as far as the West Coast! A Delray Beach delegation has been working on a west coast marketing initiative: Delray to Del Rey, focusing on Marina del Rey, CA as its contact point and conduit to the other surrounding cities such as Santa Monica and other parts of Los Angeles. They have hosted media events to garner publicity in west coast media, made relationships for further cross promotion of the cities and had success with their Beach Buddies social media campaign. Delray Beach and LA are home to a surprising number of the same companies such as GSky, iPic, PeterMark Salon and It’Sugar. On the delegation’s most recent trip they had meetings with publishers and social media influencers. They also cohosted an event alongside Ocean Properties that attracted key media and even celebrity comedian and Delray Beach fan, Bobby Collins.

The Delray to Marina del Rey/LA initiative is exciting to me—not only do we love talking about tourism between the two vibrant coastal destinations to media representatives, we’ve discovered multiple synergies between the two coasts.

These are two of the most exciting coastal areas to visit in the country, it’s no surprise we have uncovered so many great cross marketing opportunities. The press continues to roll in from our efforts!

He Said/She Said:
The Second Date By Robert V and Marie T As promised, He and She decided to further our research and go on a second date. The things we will do for our readers!
He Said:
After breaking all our rules on Date #1, I decided to go “old school” and adhere to my teachings (mostly) for Date #2. I couldn’t rent the Yugo again (it must now be very popular, you’re welcome), so I picked her up in my car. She was wearing a dress that made me forget all but monosyllabic words. But composure was my friend this evening, as I was intent on reigning it in and making this a real date. We went to dinner at a very nice steak house and sat at the bar waiting for our table. I was intent on looking her in the eyes, asking all the right questions and listening as if every word of her answers was potentially life changing. As it turns out, we had a great time. She is smart, easy to talk to and the conversation flowed like the superb cabernet we shared during dinner. Normally, these things can be a tad awkward. Maybe because we already pseudoknew each other by proxy, or maybe because we both needed material for the article, or MAYBE because we actually enjoyed each other’s company, we hit it off! I am an intellectual snob of sorts and she hung in there like a pro. The evening ended way too early, because it was a work night. We didn’t kiss goodnight, but if there is a third date, she won’t get off that lucky. So I have three takeaways form our second date. 1. Be a good listener. Everybody wants to feel relevant and listening to what they have to say does just that. 2. Keep it esoteric. Don’t delve into politics, religion or exes early on. Talk about commonalities, fun things and subjects that are sure not to cause conflict. 3. Step back after the date and assess how it really went. We might be inclined to fool ourselves one way or another because of mitigating factors like looks, desperation, loneliness, or plain old fear. Once I decom106 June 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
pressed, regained myself and thought about things, my first impression was right. It was a great experience, but it was a great experience for different reasons than I thought initially. Sure, there has to be chemistry, but there has to be more. Moral, ethical, religious (yes, I said it) and political acceptance (notice I didn’t say compatibility) all have to be a part of the long term equation. Note: If she says the date bombed, I couldn’t agree more and all of the above is purely fiction for our readers. I can still remember what she wore and probably always will. Gulp!
She Said:
Ok - so Date #2. A “real” date following the rules (sort of). He picked me up and took me a very nice steak house. To say he looked handsome is an understatement. He definitely is a man with style. I hope he didn’t catch me staring. Ok. Lie. I hope he did. While waiting to be seated, we had a predinner cocktail at the bar and kept the conversation light. He’s an attentive listener, or a very good actor. I’ll quiz him on Date #3 - assuming there is one. Regardless whether an act or not, we got along famously. At dinner he ordered an exceptional Caber-
net. Turns out he’s a wine connoisseur (translation wine snob). Admittedly I don’t know too much about wine, but he undersold the deliciousness of this one! A perfect wine with my filet. And funny enough, we continued to converse seamlessly - such a nice feeling. Since it was a weekday evening, we ended our date at an appropriate time, but if I read him right, he wanted to stay longer. And truth be told I wanted to stay too, but also was anxious to get to “the kiss.” Needless to say, I wasn’t coy with my keys this time. As we said goodbye I waited for it...annnnnd...he was a gentleman. Same kiss as our first date. Siiiighhhh.... “Always leave them wanting more.” If we go out again, I might go in for the real kiss. Key word: might. If he makes the move and it’s a good kiss, I may be able to accept (ignore) his political affiliation and the fact that he doesn’t care for baseball. (Who doesn’t like America’s Pastime???) We seem very compatible, on many levels. There definitely is an attraction (at least on my end), and a curiosity to get to know him better. It’s easy to be attracted because he is fit and handsome, but he is also intelligent and interesting to say the least. Date #3 is inevitable.
