Spirit Of Giving Announces Its Annual Back To School Bash
The Spirit of Giving is thrilled to announce that its annual Back To School Bash, an event that aims to prepare children for the upcoming school year by providing them with all the supplies they will need for school, will take place Saturday, August 6th at the Delray Beach Village Academy. The Back to School Bash is part of Boca Chamber Festival Days – a series of fun-filled events held at different locations during the month of August – and is facilitated by the Boca Chamber. This event aims to provide local children with new backpacks full of grade-appropriate supplies, uniforms, new shoes, haircuts, healthy snacks, vision screenings and access to medical resources and information. At the event, students will be paired with a volunteer personal shopper to assist them in selecting their own backpack and supplies. The Spirit of Giving—a collaborative, nonprofit organization with a focus on children and families in Palm Beach County—utilizes its 60 nonprofit member organizations for this event to provide supplies to more than 4,000 local at-risk children. Mizner Country Club Using Drone Technology to Keep Members Informed About Golf Course Renovation
Whether you love them or hate them, drones (also known as UAVs or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are surging in popularity and are increasingly being used in a wide range of industries. From the Real Estate industry to Wedding Photography, drones are entering mainstream content strategy and into diverse marketing initiatives. According to U.S. aviation officials, there could be 7 million small drones in the sky by 2020, with as many as 2.7 million of them used for commercial purposes. Mizner Country Club in Delray Beach, Florida is using drone technology to keep its members informed about its $6 million dollar renovation of their 18 Hole golf course with bi-weekly video updates. Construction of the highly anticipated course redesign is expected to be completed by
December 1, 2016. “For our vacationing members or those with northern summer homes, the drone videos are keeping them in tune with the construction progress, and they are loving it,” said Larry Savvides, Mizner General Manager. According to Adam Jalowiec, Mizner Director of Golf Course Maintenance, “Justin Fuller is our drone operator/video editor. He puts a lot of effort into the videos to insure our viewers can see the progress without actually being on the course. He works closely with us to make sure we are showing all the items of importance, and the drone perspective is spectacular. Florida rarely has elevated picture opportunities unless you own a helicopter and that is where the drone videos really stand out.”

Men Empowering Change: The First – Impact 100 Men – Palm Beach County If the women can do it, and do it well, then the men should try too!
These were the thoughts of the local men who have founded Impact 100 for Men - Palm Beach County. They were inspired by the women’s group, Impact 100 – Palm Beach County, The Power of Women Giving As One, which started in 2011. Chuck Halberg, Ted Hodkinson & Stephen Greene, the founding members of Impact 100 Men – Palm Beach County saw an opportunity to give back to the local community in a big way, and they may be the first, as they haven’t been able to find another Impact 100 group for men. So how does it work? The concept is to engage at least 100 men to contribute $1200 each, awarding at least one annual grant of up to $100,000 to a local nonprofit in Palm Beach County that focus on children, which is voted for by the members. Membership is a one-year commitment and renewed annually. The only other criteria is you must be 21 years of age or older. Once you join, your level of involvement in the group is totally up to you. You can simply cast your vote at the Grant Award Celebration or you can get involved on any number of committees. Old School Square presents Silent Disco at the Fieldhouse. Held August 4, Silent Disco is a high energy performance in a silent atmosphere! At this DJ dance party, the music is experienced through high quality, wireless headphones where you can control the volume, and I am really loving this idea. I can just picture hundreds of people jumping, contorting, sliding and morphing their body as their jam out to music that innocent bystanders can’t hear, or understand. The cool part is that there are different DJs so everyone will be dancing to the beat of their particular DJ’s drum. It’s almost a battle of the DJs where they each try to get as many people dancing to their tunes as possible and win over the crowd. How cool! t’s pretty amazing to think that what you write, document, paint or photograph now could end up being studied in hundreds or thousands of years. (So make it good!) August is What Will Be Your Legacy Month? and the possibilities are endless. If you’d like a little artistic inspiration, head to the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens for their Sumi-e ink painting workshop. Sumi-e is a form of Japanese ink painting brought from China to Japan in the 12th century. Asian aesthetic writing is generally consistent in stating the goal of is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its spirit. To paint a horse, the artist must understand its temperament better than its muscles and bones. East Asian ink wash painting may be regarded as a form of expressionistic art that captures the unseen, which says a lot for the finished product. The class is held on August 13 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and students will not only learn composition and how to paint with brush and ink, but will also have the opportunity to create a simple painting using the learned principles of composition. Instructor Susan Wilders has had the privilege of studying sumi-e ink painting from two of our country’s foremost masters, Mr. Chow Chian-Chiu and Mrs. Chow Leung Chen-Ying. I recently had the pleasure of a VIP visit onboard the MSC Divina cruise ship while she was in Miami port, courtesy of Jeff and Joel from Dash Travel.
The upscale décor of this beautiful ship astounded me. Apparently inspired by the award winning actress Sophia Loren, MSC Divina is a real beauty! Starting first and foremost with the Swarovski crystal staircases (yes, Swarovski).
The ship is elegant and glamorous! Carrying over 4300 passengers plus 1400 crew, Divina boasts 18 decks including 14 for guests. Other facilities are your choice of seven restaurants, 20 bars and lounges, four swimming pools, a bowling alley and the stylish Casino Veneziano. The huge, luxurious MSC Aurea Spa is located adjacent to the sophisticated, state of the art gymnasium on deck 14 and offers a vast array of treatments and aromas! The “Broadway style” theatre seats 1,500 guests, where they perform twice a day. The sports arena will keep you trim with sports such as basketball, volleyball, tennis and a 235m jogging track. A Smurf-themed play area is located on deck 15 in a dedicated children’s area. The list of things to see and do goes on and on! We were treated to a decadent lunch in The Black Crab Restaurant located on Decks 5 & 6. The best and only way to describe the food was…Divine, Delectable….Fantastic!!! ugust is often called “the dog days of summer,” but that is not true in the world of movies. We have some provocative titles with bigname stars to shake up the doldrums.
August 5 Will Smith is back in action as the star of “Suicide Squad,” in which a group of well-known and little-known operatives band together against a common enemy. Smith’s nickname is Deadshot, aka Floyd Lawton. His compadres include Rick Flag (Joel Kinnamon), The Enchantress (Cara Delevigne), Capt. Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and Dr. Harleen F. Quinze (Margot Robbie). The story is based on a DC Comics series, directed by David Ayer (“Fury,” “End of Watch”). Kevin Spacey is trapped in the body of his family’s pet cat in “Nine Lives.” Spacey plays an obnoxious Type-A daredevil billionaire developer who is building the tallest skyscraper in the Northern Hemisphere. Bryce Dallas Howard is the voice of his mom Grace, a forest ranger, and Robert Redford is the voice of her eccentric father Mr. Meacham, a wood-carver who likes to tell stories. “Sausage Party” is not what you think. It’s about an actual sausage (Seth Rogen) who leads a group of supermarket foods on a quest to find the truth of their existence. Other food groups are voiced by Jonah Hill, who co-wrote the script; Edward Norton, who plays Carl Bagel, Jr., and Kristen Wiig, James Franco and Salma Hayek. This is billed as the first R-rated CG-animated film, directed by Conrad Vernon (“Monsters vs. Aliens”). The Streepster is back in another scenery-chewing role. Meryl Streep plays “Florence Foster Jenkins,” a New York socialite with zero talent but a ton of ambition. Stephen Frears (“The Queen”) directs this truth-based story of a woman who tried to be an opera star. Hugh Grant plays her long-suffering husband, who soothes his suffering with a secret mistress. Simon Hedberg is her pianist, Cosme McMoon.
August 19 Roll over Charleton Heston. Mr. Heston starred in more than 100 films, but perhaps his most famous was “BenHur,” which won him an Academy Award in 1959. “Ben-Hur” has been remade with Jack Huston in the lead
role of a Roman Prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother, Messala (Toby Kebbell). This new version reverts to Lew Wallace’s epic 1880 novel, which focuses on the nature of faith. Rodrigo Santoro plays Jesus Christ and Timur Bekamretov (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) directs. “War Dogs” is another allegedly true story about two friends in their early 20s, living in Miami Beach during the early years of the Iraq War, who discover a US Government initiative that encourages small businesses to bid on US Military contracts. The boys (Miles Teller and Jonah Hill) get in way over their heads when they win the $300 million contract to finance the Afghan military. The screenplay is based on a March 2011 Rolling Stone article co-written and directed by Todd Phillips (“The Hangover” I, II and III”). “Kubo and the Two Strings” is a CG-animated movie about clever, kind-hearted Kubo (Art Parkinson) who makes a modest living in his seaside town telling stories. His friends include Hosato (George Takei), Hashi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and Kameekichi (Brenda Vaccaro). One day Kubo inadvertently summons up the forces of a long-dormant spirit, and he must join forces with The Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) to save the world with a magical musical instrument. Ralph Fiennes plays the evil Moon King. August 26 “Mechanic: Resurrection” is a sequel to the 2011 thriller starring Jason Statham as a professional assassin. Jessica Alba is Gina, a deceitful, cunning but beautiful villain. Tommy Lee Jones and Michele Yeoh co-star in the business of killing. “Don’t Breathe” is a horror-thriller about a group of friends who break into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking it would be easy pickings. Think again. Many of the team of “Evil Dead” are involved, including director Fede Alvarez; writers Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, and producer Sam Raimi.

Primary fibromyalgia syndrome (PFS) affects nearly 6 million people in the United States with a greater prevalence in women. The age groups typically affected are between 45 and 60 years of age.
PFS was originally thought of as a byproduct of clinical depression and was not deemed a valid diagnosis by the majority of physicians in the United States. Due to the lack of understanding and because it resembles other disorders such as hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue, arthritis, and infectious mononucleosis it was routinely misdiagnosed. Thanks to new, cutting edge research utilizing functional MRI and PET scans we now know that PFS is a true disorder taking on epidemic proportions in this country. WHAT IS PFSAND HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? PFS is a disabling disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and stiffness described as aching, burning, throbbing, and shooting. The pain is typically greatest in the morning and in muscle groups that are used repetitively. Fatigue and sleep disturbances (stage 4) are also cardinal signs of this disorder. Associated symptoms may include irritable bowel and bladder, headaches and transformed migraines, restless leg syndrome, TMJ and face pain, numbness and tingling, impaired memory and concentration, dizziness, anxiety, and depression. According to the American College of Rheumatology, the criteria for diagnosis of PFS includes finding tenderness or pain in at least 11 of 18 specified tender points when pressure is applied. Widespread pain must also be experienced in all four quadrants of the body for a minimum of three months. WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF PFS? is pointing towards faulty brain processing as the causative agent of PFS. A study conducted by the National Institute of Health found that patients with PFS who were given relatively low levels of pressure seemed to experience the same amount of pain and subsequent brain activity as the control group which were given high levels of pressure. Due to this faulty brain processing the brain becomes very efficient at transmitting pain so that even a soft touch may produce a pounding sensation. Over time, an individual may experience pain even without a pain producing stimulus or injury. BRAIN-BASED TREATMENT: The human brain is highly plastic (changeable). Sixty percent of the brain is genetically predetermined while forty percent is constantly changing according to environmental influences (work, home, exercise, food, etc.). We also know that our brain cells require oxygen, proper nutrients, and stimulation for optimal function. Understanding these concepts, neurophysiologic rehabilitation utilizes oxygen acquiring techniques, nutrition, and specific forms of stimulation (light, sound, touch, oculomotor exercises, one-sided balance exercises, cognitive exercises, one- sided chiropractic adjustments) targeted to the under functioning brain regions. The goal is to restore proper function. Specifically pertaining to PFS, we have also found that graded aerobic exercise and supplementation of malic acid, magnesium, and melatonin are highly effective. Lastly, Class IV High Power Laser Therapy has been proven to be effective in treating some of the sore and tender points in the musculoskeletal system. This therapy,
also known as photo-bio-modulation, sends particles of light called photons trans-dermally into the cell level. The photons dock on receptor sites on the cells and trigger the cells to produce more proteins and energy, thus stimulating the healing effect. Body contouring has been growing in popularity, and not just among celebrities. Most of us have a little “pooch” that we would love to get rid of. With so many options to choose from it can be easy to get confused about what works, what doesn’t and which option is best for you.

Nearly 30 percent of American seniors over the age of 65 are missing all of their teeth and roughly 180 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. However, losing teeth as you age is not natural. Teeth are firmly rooted in your jaw for a reason and that reason is to provide you with a lifetime of use. There are several causes for toothless Americans, and, surprisingly, age isn’t a factor. So what is?
Gum Disease As we get older, we are at more risk for developing gum disease, or periodontal disease. The senior population has the highest rates of gum disease, but roughly 50 percent of all American adults have some form of periodontitis. This could be due to a few factors, including a lack of home hygiene care and poor dietary habits. Gum disease is often not noticeable – if there are any symptoms at all! – until it’s too late to reverse, and this is especially true if you smoke. Smoking constricts blood vessels in the mouth and inhibits the signs and symptoms of gum disease from appearing. Symptoms include red and swollen gums, bleeding while brushing and tooth sensitivity. Gum disease will eventually begin to affect your tooth’s roots. Your teeth need healthy, firm gums to support them and when the gums and connective tissues are compromised, teeth can become loose and fall out. Oral Hygiene Habits It is important to take the very best care of your teeth starting early in life. It’s almost back to the books and homework for Delray Beach students, and there’s no better way to start the year off right than to plan ahead for the first day back.
Set your alarm clocks… The first day of school for Palm Beach County and Delray Beach students is Monday, August 15. While students are looking forward to seeing their friends and classmates, they might be nervous about starting back in a new classroom with a different teacher or at a new school. Parents can help ease the back to school jitters and the transition from summer to another school year by using these helpful tips. Get familiar with the school. eteria and school office so your child will know how to navigate their way around their new school. Make a doctor appointment for your children before they head back to the classroom. Students must be healthy before they get back to school so they are ready to learn. State law also requires all Florida students to have their immunization records showing their vaccination history. In addition, parents enrolling their children for the first time in any Palm Beach County school must provide a Florida Certification of Immunization (DH 680 form). The Florida Department
of Health in Palm Beach County has a full list of immunization requirements and its immunization van schedule at palmbeach. floridahealth.gov. Start early in all areas of back to school from bedtime to mealtime and homework time. Tuck your child into bed earlier. Start back with earlier bedtime hours a few weeks before school starts so they can get adjusted to the new schedule. Also, start the healthy breakfast routine now so they won’t be craving junk food. Establishing schedules for homework, dinnertime, TV and sports times also helps. Arranging play times for your child and their classmates to
meet before the start of school will help them get excited to go back with their friends. Back to school safety is the first priority. Children should know who to contact in case of an emergency and the best contact telephone number. Students should also be aware of traffic safety if walking or taking a bus to school. Find out the bus times and routes, know the bike and walking paths or chart out your carpooling plans ahead of time. Bullying is also an important conversation to have with your children. They should know how to report bullying instances, and be aware that it is okay to talk about what happened if they were bullied or witnessed bullying. Check your Back to School shopping lists. The earlier you shop, the better the deals on school supplies and clothing. But make sure you check the list first before buying supplies because some teachers require specific supplies. Also, be aware of the school’s dress code and what your child can and cannot wear during the school year. Now is the time to check with your school on any changes to their policies, as well as to find their suggested donation list for school supplies. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. School meals are also an important preparation for the school year. If you are packing your child’s lunch, be sure to include healthy meal items and mix it up during the week so they don’t get bored eating the same food over and over. If your children are eating at the school cafeteria, be sure to put aside enough lunch money and encourage choosing healthier meal choices. When your child gets home from school, make them some healthy snacks and be sure to prepare some hearty meals for dinnertime! The planning doesn’t stop during the school day. After care or after school activities are also an important part of the preparation process. Make sure to know the dates and times for after school sporting practices, games or after school club meetings so you can arrange pick-up or carpooling. If you need to utilize after care programs, some local schools offer this service at the schools, while others do not have the programs or space. Check with your child’s school for more information on after care programs, sports or club activities. Check your child’s school website as a resource. It is filled with important dates, phone numbers and event information. Many times, the school’s website will be updated and announce school activities, half days and other important information for students and parents. Encourage your child to do their best and enjoy a successful school year ahead!

It was there that Bob Turner and daughter Brenda would let loose their passion for birds. They fed baby birds until they were ready to spread their wings and nurtured neglected birds. They also created a bird sanctuary and retail store among the chirping noises that emanated from the building Bob owned that housed this migrating species. Turner is still aiming his affection toward birds – but the location of its natural habitat has been shifted a bit Westerly. Brenda’s Birds is now located on Military Trail just North of Atlantic Avenue (next to The Girls U-Pick Strawberry Patch). This new location is a bit smaller – and newer – but has the same grand selection of colorful birds with names like English Budgie, Blue Billed Western Finches, Purple Granadier, Java Rice Sparrows and Diamond Doves. The birds await a new home and spend time as one would at a spa. They hang out on

a perch with their relatives (or friends) and bathe on a whim (if you happen to be standing nearby you might get a little splatter of water on you). Some birds sing or chirp and others can be taught to talk. But make no mistake birds have been known to have varying personalities just like human beings. “Birds have a lot of personality and character,” said Bob’s youngest daughter Brenda (who the store is named after). “People need to know that Brenda’s Birds is not a regular pet store. We take in mistreated birds and keep them until they are healthy. Some are donated and others might be rescued. One thing for sure we give birds a second chance.” They sure do. Turner has been honoring wayward birds since he was a kid. “When I was a little boy I once rescued a wild sparrow and nursed it back to health. After I set it free the following summer (in New Jersey) the bird came back and sat on my shoulder.”

At his parent’s summer cabin in New Jersey Turner befriended wildlife of all stripes. He had a pet deer, a raccoon and a tender spot in his heart for birds. He made bird houses (and still does), fixed cars and mixed cement. To support his four children and wife (Rosemary) Turner ended up in the building business. But he never forgot that bird that sat on his shoulder after a long winter hiding in the woods. That acknowledgment of grace has extended to the entire Turner family. They often took in neglected (or baby birds) that needed hourly feeding in the back of their house. The situation has changed a bit, but the love and admiration for birds of all colors and personalities is still evident at the new location. There are also some new faces and familiar ones at the helm. There’s Tammy who watches over the birds and can tell you about all of their habits and harmony. There’s Trish who will help you pick out a bird, toys or bird food, Ryan and Jose (who with Tammy grooms birds on weekends). There are graceful birds with designer col-

oring and elegance, others are chatty (the Singing Canaries) and some are docile like the Java Rice Sparrows that sit together like life-long mates would at retirement. The male Zebra Finch is tiny with a red beak and striped chest and the Society Finch comes in brilliant colors and makes excellent foster parents. Up front is a large yet colorful bird that seems a bit human in his colossal stance. Known as a Scarlet Macaw, this one-year-old bird can be taught to talk and is awaiting a new home. Birds, like humans, get bored when left with nothing to do. That’s why they carry a large selection of bird toys. They’ve garnered clients, fans and supporters who follow the Slash way of life. It’s one that uplifts, beefs up and creates a healthier and more confident you. Their dedication to clients – and helping them reach inner and outer perfection – has made Slash Fitness one of the most sought after places to work-out or train for upcoming events. Their journey toward success has been a long and winding road. All three founders (Austin Brock, Andy Sziraki and Joe Ardagna) had to find inner strength to pursue their passion despite the obstacles thrown their way. “When we first started we had a studio in Delray but were forced to leave. We had nowhere to go, nowhere to train. It was the middle of summer in Florida but we didn’t give up! We built a temporary solution - we moved into Austin’s garage. Even though our situation was not what we planned, our clients came with us! It was an amazing sight to see upscale clients roll up in Bentleys and Porsches to train in a garage! It is this perseverance against all odds that motivated owners Brock, Sziraki and Ardagna to start a new phase of Slash Fitness’s development. “The community has done so much to help us grow and now we want to give back. It’s our way of saying, ‘Thank You.’ Without the locals we would not be where we are today,” said Ardagna. And where they are today is a great place. Owners Joe Ardagna, Andy Sziraki, and Austin Brock
Slash Fitness is where people can beat their demons and grow spiritually, physically and emotionally. “We are a group training facility that takes people through endurance training, personal training and group training for men and women of all ages,” said Sziraki. This next step entails taking clients on another journey - one that benefits those in the community who need financial and
moral support. It goes like this: Each month Slash picks a local charity that helps the community and donates money to that charity. Slash donates one dollar for each person who checks into Facebook when they enter. “When someone comes to here and signs in on Facebook we donate a dollar to a local charity. We do this each month and donate up to $1000 per month for that particular cause,” said Austin. The cause for July was the Coastal Conservation Association. They work to conserve, promote and enhance coastal resources for the benefit of the general public. The charity benefiting from Slash’s Give Back Program in August is the Women’s Foundation of Palm Beach County. The organization is made up of local leaders committed to investing in women and girls to encourage leadership and affect their economic, political, and social status in a positive way. For the month of August anyone who goes to Slash and posts it on Facebook will result in a dollar donation to this charitable organization. “We like to keep the charities local because we want to give back to the community that has helped us grow so much,” said Ardagna. So far some of the recipients of their generosity have been the Tri-County Humane Society, Help Our Heroes, Delray Students First, and Runwell. Slash Fitness also sponsored Runwell employees who are running the New York City Marathon. They get to train at Slash and the owners and trainers at Slash help raise funds as well. “We help churches, schools and organizations. We also volunteer for causes and local events and let people warm-up at Slash before special events for free,” said Brock. The owners of Slash Fitness (and the trainers) helped organize a Beach Clean-Up event and also sponsored a beach style workout, paddle boarding and full body workout at the beach. They also raised $19,000 for the organization called Help Our Military Heroes. The funds were raised to buy Handicap Accessible Vans for military vets. They had a car wash, donated an entire days proceeds to the organization (during the month) and did other in-house marketing events to raise money for that cause. Slash Fitness is also having a 21-Day Challenge for new members. The contest is to see who can make the biggest personal change in themselves in one month. “We have all been in fitness since college and are expanding our brand. Our plan is to change the fitness industry and are looking into new areas,” said Ardagna. They’re also offering corporate discounts and extending discounts to military personnel, police officers, fireman and students. For the month of August they are offering new members a special membership that costs only $98 per month with unlimited group training. “We believe we could change the direction of the industry and create an impact in the lives of many people ... and that’s when the Slash Fitness dream began!” Great. Historic Homes on North Swinton Avenue Help Create Unique Neighborhood By Rich Pollack

When David and Andrea Harden first came to Delray Beach in 1990, the couple who had just left their historic home in central Florida had a difficult time finding an older house they felt could be transformed into a unique and comfortable place to live.
“We looked and couldn’t find anything we really liked,” said Andrea Harden, whose husband had just taken the job as Delray Beach’s City Manager at the time. “Nothing that we had any interest in was available.” So the Hardens, who were searching for a home with special character, possibly from the 1920s era, did the next best thing. They had a 1926 home shipped in – literally – down the Intracoastal by barge from West Palm Beach where it had sat in the way of expansion plans for the Norton Museum of Art. Today, four years after Harden retired as City Manager, the 1926 home is one of several older and historically significant ones dotting North Swinton Avenue. “I think it’s important for people to see how these houses create a neighborhood,” says Harden, who along with Andrea, still lives in the home. “Part of what makes Delray Beach unique is that it has neighborhoods like this with historic homes.”

The Hardens are among a group of residents who form the Delray Beach Preservation Trust, a non-profit organization that serves as an advocate for saving the historic and architectural heritage of Delray Beach. Andrea Harden now serves as a member of the Delray Beach Historic Preservation Board, which is a city government review board. Preventing homes with historical significance like the one the Hardens have owned for more than two decades from being destroyed is critical to the future of Delray Beach, says Andrea Harden. “If you allow historic neighborhoods to change, then you destroy the flavor that makes Delray Beach unique,” Andrea Harden said. The Hardens, who have a strong affinity for rescuing and restoring historic homes, plan to apply for placement of their home on the local historic registry to ensure it remains standing
for years to come. And they are encouraging others to do the same. The two-story home, which sits back on the west side of Swinton Avenue, has several unique features, among them Solomonic or twisted style columns and more than 50 original double hung wood sash windows. “It has a lot of architectural interests and styles,” Andrea Harden says. “It’s a beautiful example of Mediterranean revival architecture with keystone arches and ornate columns.” The stucco-over-wood frame home comes with four bedrooms and three baths on the upper floor, along with two small second-floor screened-in porches. There’s also a screened-in patio on the ground floor, along with a breakfast area and a sunroom. An unattached garage is also part of the home. With a fireplace, and kitchen and dining room

cabinets made by craftsmen decades ago, the home is rich with wooden floors and ceilings. Except for some plumbing and electric work, as well as the addition of hurricane straps to keep the barrel tile roof from disappearing in a storm, the Hardens have made few major changes to the home. “I love the textured walls,” Andrea Harden says. The Hardens first discovered the house dur-
ing a visit to West Palm Beach where they saw a few other homes that were being moved to make way for airport expansion. When none met their standards because of their neglected condition, the couple then visited two houses near the Norton Museum. With several others wanting the home, David Harden wrote to leaders of the museum, explained why he and Andrea wanted it. He mentioned that they had restored a home in
Apopka that was now on the National Register of Historic Places. After they were awarded the house, the Hardens paid to have it floated down the Intracoastal Waterway on a barge and then moved to the almost quarter acre vacant lot they had purchased on Swinton Avenue. Like many other residents in the area, the Hardens believe preserving older homes benefits an entire community. “A historic district isn’t just historic houses,” Andrea Harden says. “It’s how they relate to one another and create a neighborhood. The fact that you can go down Swinton Avenue and see these homes that’s what makes Delray, Delray.” About the Delray Beach Preservation Trust The mission of the Delray Beach Preservation Trust is to identify, preserve, restore and enhance all buildings and sites deemed to be intrinsic to the history and architecture of Delray Beach. The organization strives, through education, to foster an understanding and appreciation of the cultural, social and economic benefits of historic preservation. It provides grants and assists owners in applying for grants for restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures.

The Man With A Plan

If you were shipwrecked on a deserted island Mark Stivers is the person you would want by your side. The Principle Planner of Delray Beach has a wealth of experience planning, implementing, creating, coordinating, budgeting and making sure all goes as planned.
To say that he has a wealth of knowledge about city planning, land use, economic development and goal setting would be underestimating his talent. But reading his resume and bio are as daunting a task as re-constructing Rome after its fall from grace. Stivers, who has been on the job for a year, grew up outside Washington DC in Maryland. His mother Ruth was a nurse in the Air Force and his father Albert was a Navy Communications Specialist and Technical Writer for security protocols. You could say that Stivers is a chip off both blocks. He has the discipline of a military officer and the creativity and communications skills of a media expert. He graduated Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania with a degree in Geo-Environmental Studies and had a small town idea of what his life would look like. “I was going to become a park ranger because I loved the outdoors and did not like dealing with people. I was a shy kid,” said the man who has been declared the person most likely to settle a dispute between nations. But change is something that defines Stivers, and is something he is not afraid to approach with vigor (and rigor). He started his career as a Transportation-Environmental Planner in Lancaster and Harrisburg, PA and went on to become Senior Community Planner for the Lancaster County Planning Commission. The next step in his governmental passage was as Director of Planning and Development for East Hempfield Township Landisville, PA. Before coming to Delray Beach Stivers was the City Manager of Manheim PA. In this position he was responsible for all phases of the city, including weather related emergencies, FEMA meetings, budgets, labor contracts, setting long term goals and making sure the city was living up to its potential. If there’s a buzzword in Stivers vocabulary that describes his loftiest aspirations it’s potential. “I care about people and like to enable them to do what they do best.

All of us were born with skill sets and talent and if you’re not doing what you were meant to do, you’ll end up frustrated. I like helping people become who they were created to be.” Stivers is so committed to this altruistic goal that he took time out of his city planning career to work for an international faith-based organization in the Netherlands for nine years. He taught and counseled young adults, organized programs, prepared budgets and worked with the homeless, drug addicted and needy in 12 countries. But it’s not just overseas that Stivers has made an impact. Manheim Borough Police Chief Joseph Stauffer has seen Stivers work his magic up close. “We are building a 10,000-square-foot police station that Mark had a large part in coordinating and planning. He helped me bring a critical public safety campus to fruition that is a legacy project for Manheim Borough. Every once in a while, someone comes through the office that truly makes a difference in our community. Mark motivated his employees and was a leader willing to work in the trenches when needed. He was there for storms that downed trees, and snow storms that tested our ability to operate. I truly respect and trust Mark, and for a skeptical Police Chief, that’s earned by actions not words.” His actions in Delray Beach have been impactful as well. “Mark is the ultimate ‘go to’ guy. He is sought after for advice and mentorship. He can assess a situation and get everyone to common ground. I’m a fan of Mark’s, whether it’s his technical skills or a shoulder to lean on. He does it all,” said Francine Ramaglia, Assistant City Manager of Delray. The ability to befriend everyone in a room – and to make sense of a situation from all angles – is what people admire about Stivers. “Mark is exceedingly talented. When we’re in a pressured situation he can diffuse the room and get the mission done. He is very well rounded and knows how government operates,” said Steve Hynes,
Director of Emergency Management in Delray. Stivers attributes some of this ability to his wanderlust. He has traveled to 19 countries and appreciates each one for their unique diversity. “It all comes down to people and relationships. My job is to build a bridge between different departments and help elected officials make the right decisions. It’s important that everyone know the impact and consequences of actions on both sides.” One situation that Stivers is enthusiastic about is the revitalization of the Congress Avenue Corridor. His vision is to make it at-
tractive and desirable for businesses and residents. “It would be great to have an artist community, new restaurants and housing in that area. We can make it like Europe with different neighborhoods. Individuals need to work together and honor the history and culture of each neighborhood,” said the recipient of the Irving Hand Excellence In Planning award given by the PA Chapter of the American Planning Association. Stivers’ people skills also spill over to his personal life. He is married to his soulmate and consummate traveling companion Chris, a land-
scape architect for Palm Beach County. Their blended family is made up of his two grown daughters Selah and Terah and Chris’s son Ian. They both love to travel and enjoy camping, biking, hiking and cooking. They also have a passion for animals – especially their 85-pound rescue lab and five rescue cats. One surprising thing about this planning czar is that when he is out of the office and on the road (or in the kitchen) he doesn’t like to plan. “Chris and I are free spirits, we enjoy going on trips with few rules and minimal plans.” Go figure! www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | August 2016

That’s why award-winning restaurateur Thierry Beaud had a light-bulb moment when he tasted the scrumptious French pastries made by Patrick Léze. Léze had left his French roots (and celebrated status in France) to open a small bakery in West Palm Beach. As luck would have it Léze’s bakery (Champs Elysees) was right next to Beaud’s restaurant PB Catch Seafood & Raw Bar. While delighting in his morning ritual of having a fresh croissant and Napoleon, Beaud had a thought. “I realized that Patrick’s products were amazing yet underpromoted. I was eating there every morning and was shocked at the high quality of everything.” As someone with a restaurant Geiger counter made of gold (he is the owner of PB Catch and Pistache) Beaud decided to part-
ner with Léze to create Paneterie. The success of their West Palm Beach location convinced them that opening a second location in Delray Beach was the right thing to do. We couldn’t agree more. The new Paneterie is a bastion of delight tucked into a small shopping plaza on Jog Rd (across from Morikami). Though its parameters are small in stature, its namesake is quite large. Léze was a pastry chef in France for 40 years. He was a member of the Tour de France baking team and a celebrated pastry chef at Laduree and Gaston Lenotre. He also had his own bakery in France. But while touring the Florida coast on a motorcycle Leze and his wife decided to leave France and move to Palm Beach County. Though Léze left his native country he brought with him his best recipes. That might explain the extraordinary Napoleons, Croissants, Grilled Paninis, Sandwiches, Salads, Quiches and Pastries sold at Peneterie. To some people the act of eating is a divine experience, while for others this spark of greatness needs a reason to be lit. We knew this to be true the moment we tasted the Spinach and Cheese Quiche at Paneterie. This light and fluffy quiche was divinely ordained by Léze’s recipe and handiwork. Their oven-fresh Croissants can be devoured individually – or be part of a breakfast sandwich. The most popular of the Croissant sandwiches are the Croque Monsieur (made with Tavern Ham and Swiss cheese and Bechamel) and the Omelette with Cheddar Cheese on a Croissant. If you find yourself crying out in joy while eating their Croissant sandwiches don’t be alarmed – it’s a side effect of this high-level endorphin rush. If you thought running or working-out created a sense of well being in your cerebral cortex, try one

of their freshly baked Napoleons. I did. And I found myself moaning in a small voice “Oh gosh, this is amazing.” Though I try to keep my ecstatic moments in tandem with life’s greater achievements, this was an experience of involuntary joy. If you want to try another of their famous culinary treasures indulge in a grilled Panini made with fresh bread (it cooks while being steamed). The Caprese was simply superb with Tomato, Fresh Mozzarella, Basil, Olive Oil and a Balsamic Drizzle. They also have a Mediterranean Chicken Panini (with Roasted Chicken, Piquillo Peppers, Artichokes, Goat Cheese and Roasted Tomato) as well as a Shaved Roast Beef Panini and a Three Cheese Panini. If you want a healthy lunch - or snack try one of their sandwiches. Unlike the sandwich of your childhood, these are more gourmet and less pedestrian. Our favorite was the PB Club on a whole wheat baguette. Made with hand-carved Turkey Breast, Brie cheese, Avocado, Mayo, Roasted Tomato and Crisp Bacon it was wonderful. Other sandwiches are the Vegetarian, Smoked Salmon, French Brie (with Fig Preserve, Walnuts, Golden Raisins on a baguette) Rustic French (with classic Pate) and Tuna or Roasted Chicken Salad. The sandwiches come on multi-grain Ciabatta, Baguette or Whole Wheat Pita bread. There’s also fresh Tomato Soup and a selection of fresh Salads. Try their Nicoise Salad, Atlantic (with Smoked Salmon), Roasted Vegetable and Quinoa Salad, or Kale and Roasted Chicken Salad. If you want to try some of Léze’s most famous (and fresh) pastries saunter over to the glass enclosed case up front. There you
will encounter rare treats – such as the KeyLime Raspberry Tart (with Key-lime custard and pistachio cream filling topped with raspberries), Napoleons that will make you cry out in delight, chocolate truffles, homemade Macaroons (that are gluten-free) and other dreamy treats. They also cater special events and make divine cakes and pastries for any occasion. For the holidays there are special pastries and for Birthdays the cakes are over the top amazing. August is National Peach Month! So to honor our favorite fuzzy fruit, this month we are featuring recipes with - you guessed it - PEACHES!!!
Peach, Mozzarella and Basil Salad

INGREDIENTS 3 ripe peaches (peeled, if desired) 1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, cut into 1-inch chunks 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper DIRECTIONS Cut each peach into 6 to 8 wedges, then cut each wedge in half crosswise. In a large bowl, combine the peaches, basil, and mozzarella. Drizzle with the oil, sprinkle with the salt and pepper, and toss. (You can cover and refrigerate the salad for up to several hours.) Serve cold or at room temperature. Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS 5 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon honey 82

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes kosher salt and black pepper 4 firm but ripe yellow peaches, cut into eighths 2 large sprigs fresh rosemary, broken into pieces 20 large shrimp, peeled and deveined, tails on 4 medium Belgian endives (preferably 2 red and 2 green) 3 tablespoons crème fraîche or equal parts sour cream and heavy cream 1 teaspoon coarse-grain mustard 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 2 tablespoons milk 1 tablespoon corn oil
DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 500° F. Line a baking sheet with 2 layers of foil. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, 1 tablespoon of the honey, red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper to taste. Brush the peaches with the honey mixture and place them on the foil, cut-side down. Scatter the rosemary over them. Roast for 15 minutes, turning once. Transfer the peaches and top layer of foil to a counter to cool. Slip off the peach skins, if desired. Brush the shrimp with the remaining honey mixture, place on the bottom layer of foil, and roast for 8 minutes.
Meanwhile, slice each endive crosswise into ¾-inch-thick strips. Place the peaches and endives in a large bowl. In a medium bowl, combine the crème fraîche, mustard, vinegar, milk, the remaining 1 teaspoon of honey, and salt and pepper to taste. Whisk in the corn oil. Drizzle ¾ of the dressing over the peaches and endives; toss. Divide the salad among 4 plates, top with the shrimp, and drizzle with the remaining dressing.
Roasted Pork Chops and Peaches

INGREDIENTS 1 10-ounce package couscous 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 bone-in pork chops (3/4 inch thick; about 2 pounds total) kosher salt and black pepper 2 peaches, cut into wedges 1 small red onion, cut into thin wedges 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 400° F. Cook the couscous according to the package directions. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Season the pork with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper and cook until browned, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Add the peaches, onion, vinegar, and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper to the skillet and cook, tossing, for 1 minute. Return the pork (and any accumulated juices) to the skillet. Transfer to oven and roast until the pork is cooked through and the peaches are tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle the pork and peaches with the basil and serve with the couscous. Serves 4.
Roast Chicken with Balsamic Peaches

INGREDIENTS 1 3 1/2- to 4-pound chicken 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 4 peaches, quartered (peeled, if desired) 4 small shallots, halved 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 6 sprigs fresh thyme DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 400° F. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Rub the chicken with 1 tablespoon of the oil and season with 1 1/2 teaspoons of the salt and 1/4 teaspoon of the pepper. Place in a roasting pan or baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the peaches, shallots, vinegar, thyme, and the remaining oil, salt, and pepper. Scatter the peach mixture around the chicken. Roast until the chicken is cooked through and a thigh registers 180° F on a meat thermometer, about 1 hour, 10 minutes. Let rest for 10 minutes before carving. Serve with the peaches and pan sauce. Serves 4.
Peach Cobbler

INGREDIENTS 8 peaches (about 2 1/2 pounds), cut into 1/2-inch-thick wedges 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 2/3 cup heavy cream vanilla ice cream, for serving
INGREDIENTS 6 ripe yellow peaches 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 1cup heavy cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract DIRECTIONS Cut each peach in half, then cut each half into 4 slices. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, sprinkle the sugar over the butter, and stir until dissolved, about 1 minute. Add the peaches, increase heat to medium-high, and cook, stirring frequently, until the peaches are softened and coated with a thin sauce, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand a few minutes. Meanwhile, in a bowl, beat the cream and vanilla until soft peaks form. Spoon the peaches and sauce into bowls and serve with a dollop of whipped cream. Serves 4.
Fresh Peach Bellinis
DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 350° F. In a bowl, toss the peaches with ¼ cup of the sugar and 2 tablespoons of the flour; transfer to an 8-inch square baking dish. In a food processor, combine the remaining 1¼ cups flour and ¼ cup sugar with the butter, baking powder, and salt. Pulse until coarse crumbs form. Add the cream and pulse just until moistened (the dough will be slightly shaggy). Drop spoonfuls of the batter onto the peaches. Place the baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until golden brown and bubbly, 50 to 60 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired. Serves 6.
Warm Peaches With Whipped Cream Ingredients 2 ripe peaches, seeded and diced 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 teaspoon sugar 1 bottle chilled prosecco sparkling wine

Directions Place the peaches, lemon juice, and sugar in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade and process until smooth. Press the mixture through a sieve and discard the peach solids in the sieve. Place 2 tablespoons of the peach puree into each Champagne glass and fill with cold prosecco. How do I Build a Stronger Immune System to Fight Cancer?
A
s leaders in the animal health industry, we cannot stress enough times how important the role of nutrition plays in building a strong and healthy immune system. This is done simply by following a good species appropriate clean diet that nourishes all the parts of the body. Once a strong immune system is achieved, it can then heal the body of all types of challenges including cancers. When we hear the doctor or veterinarian say the diagnosis is cancer, most of us have been programmed to immediately think of an impending death sentence. It is unfortunate that this type of situation tends to be propagated as a tool for a highly emotional purchase from a limited selection of drugs and treatments provided by conventional medicine. In most cases, these treatments attack and mitigate the symptom but ignore the cause. According to the FDA, chemotherapy only has a 3% success rate. We trust our doctors to be the experts and they continue to sell us treatment that has a 97% failure rate. It is a fact that the body is truly capable of curing itself of cancer and other disease as long as it is provided with the right nutritional and detoxification tools. Fighting and defeating cancer or achiev-
ing an actual cure is for us to approach this disease as a whole body challenge and to support the body with the tools it needs to accomplish this. Cancer is a man-made disease that has its’ roots in the plethora of toxic chemicals that ourselves and our pets are constantly exposed to. These toxins disrupt the normal functions of the organs that must work in unity to produce healthy cells and also destroy the unhealthy ones. We are aware that cancer thrives when fed a high glycemic, carbohydrate diet. Sugar creates inflammatory conditions that further compromise the whole system. When this happens, the body becomes further out of balance in the production, utilization and balance of the biochemical system of enzymes, hormones, minerals and nutrients. Cooking and processing foods also degrades the quality of the nutrients which are usually replaced in manufactured foods with synthetic (chemical) supplements. The body produces cancer cells daily, however a healthy immune system will keep them in check as long as we follow a species appropriate, clean, natural diet and lifestyle. For carnivores such as dogs and cats, this consists of a rotation of meat, fish, poultry and eggs as the macro nutrients. Most of
the major nutrients are found in these foods when they are fed in their natural raw state. The micronutrients they need also come from botanical and herbal sources that are high in antioxidants, bio-available minerals and have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, fungal, virus, parasite properties which add to immune health and support the endocrine system production of hormones and enzymes. In addition to these benefits, most will also support the cleansing and health of the liver, kidneys, heart, thyroid and the internal parts that all work together to create the immune system. The goal is to provide your pets and yourself with a variety of foods, herbs, and botanicals that will maximize and optimize the body with good health from the time of conception until the end of a long life. If we use this as a daily guide, you should greatly reduce the risk of cancer and most other diseases. My Dirty Little Secret By Susan Harris

I remember the day I confessed my secret life to my mother as though it was yesterday. After living a lie for 9 months, it was almost a relief when I mentioned Allie during a casual conversation. My mother must have sensed the affection in my voice, almost bordering on reverence. She confronted me.
“Who the heck is Allie?” I gulped. How could I ever explain that I was turning my back on the very moral and ethical foundations on which she had worked so hard to instill? Then I decided that I was tired of living in fear. Tired of living in a world where society told me that I was evil for my actions. I took a deep breath. “Allie,” I stated calmly, “is my cleaning lady.” My mother gasped. “Ami, how could you? Don’t you know that this will kill your father if he ever finds out?” In a way, I could understand her horror. My mother is a child of the fifties, and she had solid notions about the roles of women in the household. While other women were burning their bras in the 70s, my mother was bravely pulling the singed underwires from the ashes and passing them out to the members of her Girl Scout troop. She then showed the girls how to tie several hundred clear plastic baggies to the wires, fashioning Christmas wreaths that were festive, yet chic, in a way that non-food storage-based wreaths can only dream. Thus, my mother spent many hours teaching her children the domestic arts. These skills were divided along strict gender lines. My two sisters and I spent each Saturday learning to scrub toilets, mop floors and vacuum carpets, while my two brothers learned the equally important task of reading the colored funnies while slipping their feet into the heat registers to avoid the perilous drafts that could occur when one of the thoughtless females opened a window to release the oven cleaner fumes. After I admitted my perfidy to my mother, it became easier to openly speak about Allie with my close friends. I chose a quiet moment 92

during a casual play date and then waited for their reactions. Nancy said, “Wow. I never thought I’d admit this in public, but I use a cleaning service too.” Michelle said, “So do I.” She quickly added, “But they only come once a month. And I always vacuum before they come, because I don‘t want them to think we’re slobs.” Karla, whom I’ve never really trusted, said, “I could never use a cleaning service. I just feel like it’s part of my job as a stay-at-home mother.” Nancy, Michelle and I responded to this blatant attack on our mothering skills with a classic defense mechanism: justification. Nancy declared, “Well, it’s not like the service saves me that much time! It takes me hours to pick up the house before they arrive.” Michelle quickly agreed. “That’s right! All they really do is clean the bathrooms and wash the kitchen floor. And I usually spend the extra free time teaching little Madison new words in Spanish.” Nancy wisely grasped the opportunity to change the subject. “I didn’t know you could speak Spanish!” Michelle said, “I don’t. We watch Dora the Explorer together.” Karla frowned. “Oh. I don’t allow my children to watch television. The American Academy of Child Experts Who Have No Children of Their Own say it causes social maladjustment and acute hyperactivity.”
Michelle looked crestfallen at this unforeseen assault on her mothering skills. Nancy and I, veteran mothers who would never foolishly admit that we allow our preschool children to watch television, smiled guiltily and muttered our agreement that television was horrible. I think it’s safe to say, however, that I wasn’t the only one who imagined pelting Karla in the head with a low-fat blueberry muffin. Then I thought of all the crumbs that would fall on the floor. That’s when I figured ‘why not?’ After all, that kind of thing is the very reason I’m so glad I have Allie.
