July is a Special Month Can you guess why?
I
f you guessed because we celebrate America’s Indepen-
dence, you’d be right. If you guessed because it’s my birthday month (the 12th - mark your calendars *wink), you’d be
right again!
But there is one more reason...
10 years ago, July 2006 we launched the very first issue of
Atlantic Ave Magazine!!!
All of us here at Atlantic Ave Magazine would like to thank our
loyal advertisers and readers for your continued support, we
couldn’t do it without you. Here’s to many more decades serving our beautiful City by the Sea that we love so much.
Looking for something to do July 4th? Well, look no further!
Delray Beach is chock full of activities to keep you busy all weekend long! Check out Delray Under $50, the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative article, and our special feature Celebrate 4th of July for suggestions on activities.
Our City Person this month is Bettina Young. This amazing
mother of 5 (yes, 5!), and former ballerina, is a Woman of Grace. She shares with us her story, along with her passion for philan-
thropy and literacy. We are lucky to have her advocate in our city. Love pizza? Well duh! Diane Feen stopped into Scuolo Vech-
hia and sampled their specialty pies. They now make gluten free pizza! Yes!!! And YUM!!!
Remember to take a moment and reflect on the true meaning
of Independence Day.
Have a safe and wonderful Fourth of July! Happy Birthday Atlantic Ave. Happy Birthday America. XO

Local Traders Need
YOU
There has never been a more crucial time to support your local businesses than right now!!
Summer is upon us and most of our winter visitors are long gone. The streets are pretty quiet which in turn means that our local restaurants, bars and shops are pretty quiet too. However, consider this - quieter streets mean easier parking along Pineapple Grove, Atlantic Ave or any of our streets enticing the local consumer. Many businesses are offering “summer prices” for us locals which makes enjoying all that Delray Beach has to offer an all-round nicer and more attractive idea, with the added bonus of being able to shop comfortably or get seated immediately with no long wait times for a table. Savor and relish in getting your “town” back for you to explore and enjoy. Those winter months you considered a stroll

along the Avenue, a trip on The Lady Atlantic, Happy Hour in your favorite bar made you reconsider because the thought of the crowds and the hustle and bustle… Well now the time is right for you to venture out and delight in yourfavorite snack or meal you’ve been hankering after, peep into that store that has intrigued you for months, saunter round the art galleries, take in a show at Old School Square, check out the Green Market or even consider your health and wellness and take up yoga, join a gym or try your hand at tennis….. Downtown Delray Beach has a lot to offer its tourists but don’t miss out this summer because it has just as much to offer its local patrons.

to raise money for education initiatives in Delray Beach and to have a fun communitywide event. For those who think they know Delray and local businesses, this is the perfect competition to test that knowledge. Whether you are good at strategizing, navigating, photographing, clever with clues, or even creative with making costumes, become a Seeker to participate in the Scavenger Hunt. This fast paced educational and fun activity is primarily for adults who are familiar with the Delray community businesses and landmarks. A team of up to 5 participants may register now online at www.seekinthecitydelray.com for $150. Only 50 teams may participate this year; sign up early, as previous years nearly sold out. The entry fee includes an afternoon of fun including participation in the event, light snacks, and a chance to win prizes at the Awards Ceremony. Seekers will check in at the newly renovated Elks Lodge at 2pm, the site of the Kick Off and Awards Ceremony and will receive a list of clues they must decipher and locate during the Hunt. Clue Stops are assigned a point value based on difficulty of the clue, distance, and other factors. The more Clue Stops the teams discover, the more points are accumulated to potentially win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place prizes. Clues such as: “It takes a lot of will power to buy no more than “TWO” desserts when visiting this bakery” and “This venue is not really a “Garage” but is a hub for cultural artists, musicians and performers” sent Seekers to their businesses to get credit for discovering their Clue Stops during scavenger hunts in the past. For more information, sign up to be a Seeker, a Sponsor, a Clue Stop or Donate www.seekinthecitydelray.com or call the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, (561) 278-0424, e-mail seek@delraybeach.com.

come from the Commercial Real Estate market in metropolitan New York City. In 2007 I worked with Commercial Real Estate firm, Messrs. Sheldon Gross Realty. Eventually I became a Vice President of Weichert Commercial Brokerage before moving to Delray Beach permanently in 2013. I have had extensive business and academic experience in addition to commercial real estate. I started my own international chemical trading firm in 1986 which I successfully sold in 1998. I am currently Treasurer and Board member of my Condo Association, Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Delray Beach Club, active in the Delray Beach Rotary Club and active in the Brotherhood of St. Andrew at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Delray Beach. The growth and prospects for Palm Beach County, made my decision to enter the Real Estate market with POSH Properties who have been active in Commercial Real Estate. It was the owner’s commitment to the market that attracted me to work with POSH to strengthen and expand that part of the POSH Properties business.

was born and raised in Germany. My family and I moved to America with the expansion of our business. In 1998 we moved to Florida after spending a few years in the Cayman Islands. Having been an independent entrepreneur in Germany and the United States, I have a very good understanding of European and American clients. Architecture and design continue to inspire me in all of my endeavors. I have a knack for aesthetics and design and a very good sense for space. My interior decorator portfolio is comprised of numerous properties from design stages to completion. For many years I have been an accredited Real Estate Agent specifically in South Florida. I earned the designation of CIPS (Certified International Property Specialist) and the ASP (Accredited Staging Professional). I have advised and guided local and international clients on purchases from Miami to Port Saint Lucie. As part of my service to my clients, when they list with me I offer the part of staging. I believe my talent and professionalism and my ability to listen to my client’s needs brings people and real estate together seamlessly. I also love the Florida beaches, cooking, eating out at local restaurants, traveling and exercising. am a firm believer that success follows passion. There is nothing I love more than helping others live the South Florida lifestyle! What’s better than coastal living? The sun, sea, warm temperatures, fantastic restaurants and culture! I received my undergraduate degree in business from Georgetown University and a Master’s Degree in Real Estate from Johns Hopkins. Originally from Maryland, I began my career in real estate in 2009 as a licensed Realtor®. I also owned and operated a property tax appeal business. After spending time in South Florida for the past several years, I decided to make the move permanently 3 years ago. Having lived as far south as Boca Raton and as far north as Palm Beach Island, now as a licensed Realtor® in Florida, I’m dedicated to staying relevant on the market in the surrounding areas. Whether you’re buying or selling, my priority is commitment to professionalism and client satisfaction. My results-oriented mindset lends itself to me being organized, focused on details and always being available to my clients. I’m associated with the National Association of Realtors and the Realtor Association of the Palm Beaches. When not working, I enjoy playing golf (1 handicap), practicing yoga, contemporary art, modern design and cooking. Christy L. Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in July for $50 or less.
ong live red, white and blue! We claimed our independence from England 240 years ago (thankfully for that!) and have used this time wisely perfecting the perfect celebration. July 4, or Independence Day, falls on Monday this year, so we are able to spend the entire day with friends and family enjoying this special holiday. If you want to celebrate with thousands of your closest friends, head to the beach for the July 4 Celebration and enjoy the festivities. Held from 4 to 9:30 p.m., the Celebration features live music from MainStreet Dreamers and The Holidazed; family activities with a splash zone; a kid’s corner with face painting, crafts and sidewalk chalk; a beer garden for adults; a custard eating contest for kids and a burger eating contest for adults; a sand sculpting contest and putt-putt mini golf course; and more. Let’s not forget about the amazing fireworks! The fireworks will launch from the north end of the beach at 9 p.m. so grab a great spot early, and make sure you tune into Wild 95.5 to hear the music timed for the fireworks. The July 4 Celebration is one of the biggest parties the City hosts for the community. The Celebration is held along A1A and Atlantic Avenue and is free and open to all. Visit www.julyfourthdelraybeach.com or call (561) 278-0424 for the detailed schedule of events. 22 July 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

t’s getting steamy, folks. Yes, we live in a tropical paradise, but sometimes it’s just too hot to move. Air Conditioning Appreciation Days takes up most of July and, while I appreciate air conditioning, I much prefer natural air conditioning: the breeze! I unfortunately don’t own a boat, but I do know the perfect place to go to get my boat (and pina colada) fix. Delray Yacht Cruises invites everyone to cool down with them aboard the Lady Atlantic for a two-hour sightseeing cruise. You can either take a seat on
the rooftop deck and get some full-frontal breeze action, or enjoy the air conditioned space inside the ship. Either way, you’ll be able to see a variety of marine life, learn a little history and some fun facts about the waterway, and get to live the nautical life for a couple of hours. The cruise departs at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and, for a limited time, the tickets are discounted to $16 per person! Delray Yacht Cruises is located at Atlantic Avenue and the Intracoastal, 801. E Atlantic Ave. Visit www.delraybeachcruises.com or call (561) 243-0686 for more information and to download your coupon.

et’s get social! July is Social Wellness Month, and social wellness refers to the relationships we have and how we interact with others. If you’re an introvert learning how to better create social connections, or someone who loves the social scene and wants to interact more with others, I’ve got you covered. The Delray Beach Public Library’s Lifelong Learning Community Institute is full steam ahead with their summer calendar and a particular class of interest is The Ultimate Creative Writing Class. The Institute states that writing doesn’t have to be a lonely endeavor and that, with the right instructor and a group of like-minded peers, it can feel more like playing in a great band. Regardless if you are currently working on a piece
and want feedback and tips, or just want help putting pen to paper, everyone is invited. All participants will first read the works of their classmates, then learn from each other and from the instructor as to what works, why, and how to grow, all in a safe, supportive and professional atmosphere. Not only will you create better connections with your classmates, but also with your inner writing guru. The class is taught by Dr. Caren Neile, a professional writer for more than 30 years, who is back by popular demand! The classes are held July 6, 13 and 20 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and the cost is $45 for the course. The Delray Beach Public Library is located at 100 W. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.delraylibrary.org or call (561) 266-0194 for more information.

t’s back, the Dog Days, named for the most sultry period of the summer, have graced our environment once again for the greater part of July. But, with the help of Max’s Harvest, we will prevail! Beat the summer heat with their cool, daily specials and revel in the fact that you’re only as hot as you want to be. Bottoms up on Monday with halfpriced bottles of wine and follow that with $12 burgers and $5 bourbon or Beaujolais on Tuesday. Wednesday is a slammin’ night with their Chef vs. Chef competition where you get to watch local chefs create culinary masterpieces as they battle for the title. Thursday features a $35 one-and-ahalf pound lobster with salad and dessert, and $5 wines to wash it down. Drink to the weekend on Friday and Saturday with half-priced wine from 5 to 7 p.m. To finish it off, Sunday dishes up $29 family-style southern fried chicken and $5 southern spiked tea and lemonades. It’s like a yellow brick road of delicious food and beverage, and I’m totally okay with it because I’ll take any steamy summer for these sweet deals. Max’s Harvest is located at 169 N.E. Second Ave. Visit www.maxsharvest.com or call (561) 381-9970 for more information and reservations.
S
lice it, dice it, tot it or wedge it, no one cares. Drop it in oil and deliver straight to my face. July 13 is National French Fries Day and, all I can say is, it’s about time. French fries are probably one of the best comfort foods ever because you can dress them up (poutine, anyone?), serve them for breakfast, lunch or dinner (give me your tots!), or just dip, munch, repeat after some bar hopping or a beach adventure. If there was a fry tour of the Avenue, I would have to say the first stop would be the good ol’ fashioned basket o’ fries at Blue Anchor for $4. Grab a pint and a picnic table, and douse those chips with pepper and malt vinegar, and you’ve got yourself a screaming good time. Next, head to The Office for their sweet potato fries with an herb buttermilk dressing for $7 and just remember that they’re sweet potato, so it’s good for you. If you like options, head to BurgerFi where you can get their hand-cut fries (starting at $3.27) with a load of toppings ($.97 to $1.77) including salt and vinegar, bacon, cheese, parmesan and herb, chili and cheese, or chili. Get frisky and double down on the toppings. There are no rules! If you’re feeling fancy, head to Cut432 for their parmesan truffle fries ($8/$11) and savor the flavor of fine eating. No matter what you’re in to, the Avenue has you covered, one potato at a time. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com for restaurant location and menus. Happy eating!

July 1 Me Tarzan, you Jane? The vine-swinging jungle hero Tarzan is recreated for a new generation in “The Legend of Tarzan,” starring Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan, who becomes Lord Greystoke with his loyal wife Jane (Margot Robbie) back in England. When Lord Greystoke is called back to Africa as trade emissary for Parliament, he runs afoul of greedy Belgian Capt. Leon Rom (Christolph Waltz), who wants to ransom him for diamonds. Dijimon Hounsou is Chief Mbonga, John Hurt is Prof. Archemedes Q. Porter and the director is David Yates, who led all those Harry Potter movies. Characters are loosely based on Edgar Rice Burroughs originals. July 8 Who knew about “The Secret Life of Pets?” Find out in a 3-D animated kids’ film starring the voice of Louis C.K. as the top dog, a sharp-witted terrier in a Manhattan apartment building. His life changes when his owner brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a sloppy mongrel with no class. On the streets the duo meet adorable white
mila kunis “bad moms”
bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) who in reality is a firebrand determined to lash back at humanity for abandoned pets everywhere. They have to save the day and be back home in time for dinner. Additional voices are Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell and Albert Brooks. “Mike and Jake Need Wedding Dates” is a high concept comedy about two good-looking dudes (Adam Devine and Zac Efron) who place an online ad for wedding dates and get Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza. Things don’t turn out as the guys imagined (do they ever?). Director Jake Syzmanski does not have much of a track record, but he must be doing something right. He has two more film projects on the horizon.
July 13 “The Infiltrator” is a U.S. Customs agent named Bob Mazur, played by Bryan Cranston in this fact-based story set in 1986. Mazur, posing as a moneylaundering U.S. businessman, infiltrated the Pablo Escobar Colombian drug and money-laundering cartel. Teamed with Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo) and rookie Kathy Ertz (Diane Kruger) Mazur befriended Escobar’s top lieutenant Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt) to build a case leading to the indictment of 85 drug lords and corrupt bankers. Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer) directs. July 15 Who ya gonna call? “Ghostbusters” is a reboot of the 1984 not-so-scary comedy hit, starring Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert and Melissa McCarthy as Abby Berman; two unheralded authors who wrote a book asserting ghosts are real. Gilbert lands a position at prestigious Columbia University, but when the book resurfaces she is laughed out of academia. The two women join with Jillian Holtzman (Kate McKinnon) and Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) to form a supernatural-battling squad, with Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) as their male receptionist. Paul Feig, who previously directed Melissa McCathy in “Spy,” is at the helm and co-wrote the script with Katie Dippold.
July 22 “Star Trek Beyond” is a third sequel to a 2009 reboot of the initial motion picture series and the groundbreaking science fiction television series that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The new crew of the USS Enterprise is back: Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk; Zachary Quinto as logical Vulcan Spock; Zoe Saldana as exotic Nyota Uhura; Simon Pegg as Scotty, and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. The gang encounters the greatest, and most mysterious force in the farthest reaches of uncharted space. Justin Lin, who directed a bunch of those “Fast & Furious” thrillers, is the new director on board. Afraid of the dark? “Lights Out” is a horror film for you. When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought she left childhood fears behind. Then the same fears begin to bedevil her younger brother Martin, and now her mother Sophie is experiencing a mysterious intervention. Others in the cast are Amiah Miller, Gabriel Bateman and Alexander DiPersa. Director David F. Sandberg based the story on his 2013 short film. Matt Damon is back as “Jason Bourne” after three go-rounds as the super-duper ex-CIA operative from 2002-2007. Bourne comes out of the shadows to be menaced by bad guy Vincent Cassel. Riz Ahmed is the everuseful CIA tech specialist. Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones add support. Paul Greengrass, who directed Damon in 2004 and 2007, is back in the director’s chair and shares screenwriting credit with Damon. You’ve got your good moms and then you have your “Bad Moms.” Mila Kunis is Amy Mitchell, who lives for her family first and always. But her man-child husband and idiot boss push her to the brink. Amy snaps, and becomes a “Bad Mom,” with fellow misfits Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell. The baddies take on the alpha moms Christina Applegate, Annie Mumolo and Jada Pinkett Smith. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (“the Hangover”) co-direct.

One duel could be considered a matter of honor, but three duels are attempted murder! With enlightened society outraged at such reckless behavior among young noblemen, the Prince Regent orders Robert Whitworth, the Earl of Tamdon’s heir, and Lord Dominic Wolfe to end their dispute by allying their families through marriage. Whichever party refuses to comply will forfeit his lands and title. Whitworth relishes the idea of sending his younger sister Brooke to his enemy’s remote estate. He knows the Wolf will reject her as a bride, thereby losing his wealth and status. The Wolf, however, is determined to scare away the Whitworth chit. Ageless Rockers
Paul Rodgers and Joe Walsh RoCk on
By skip sheffield photos by tom craig Too old to rock ‘n’ roll? Never. Paul Rodgers’ amazing voice is as strong as ever at age 65. Rodgers opened the show with his reunited group, Bad Company, May 29, 2016 at Perfect Vodka Amphitheater in West Palm Beach in the aptly-named “One Hell of a Night” tour. Joe Walsh, who turns 69 November 20th, has been performing professionally since 1965. He still plays with the joy of a kid with his first guitar. Rodgers and Walsh have been trading places as opening acts. In West Palm Beach Paul Rodgers & Bad Company took to the stage after a solo acoustic act who called himself Makana, after the Hawaiian slack key guitar. Paul Rodgers is looking trim and fit, with 42 July 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
a fashionable 5 o’clock shadow light beard. Though regular Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs was absent, two replacement guitarists more than made up. They were Howard Leese from Heart and Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes. Original drummer Simon Kirke is the de facto band leader. The set list was heavy on greatest hits from the groups Free and Bad Co. Rodgers has never sounded better. He must have forged steel vocal chords. Joe Walsh has never been noted for his vocals, though he does fine. It is his guitar skills that really make him a special performer. Walsh must have an amazing guitar collection, for practically every song in an 11 song set, a roadie handed him a different guitar to strap on.
Walsh began playing professionally in his native Ohio in 1965. He burst on the national scene with the hard-rocking trio James Gang in 1968. Walsh opened the set with James Gang’s biggest hit, “Walk Away,” aided and abetted by his longtime guitarist-in-arms, Waddy Wachtel and Joe Vitale on drums and vocals. He also played the group’s most difficult number, The Bomber, which is a medley of “Closet Queen,” “Bolero” and “Cast Your Fate to the Wind.” Walsh also gave a bow to his latest gig, The Eagles, with “Take It To The Limit,” which he dedicated to the late Glenn Frey. Walsh strapped on a plastic tube and yet another guitar for his fitting finale, “Rocky Mountain Way,” complete with “talk box” effects. Yes, it was one Hell of a night.

Holistic Treatment for Vertigo and Dizziness Symptoms
{
By Dr. haley girard
You’ve likely heard someone you know speak of “having vertigo”, or maybe you have experienced the unpleasant symptoms of abnormal spinning sensations, lightheadedness, or imbalance. Vertigo itself is a symptom, not a condition, and can be caused by a number of vestibular conditions.
According to a poll on vestibular.org, participants were asked “In a year’s time, how many days of work do you miss due to your vestibular disorder?” Out of 494 respondents, 253 (51%) responded that they are unable to work, and 101 respondents (20%) reported missing two to five weeks of work per year. This is a significant amount of time, and these symptoms are obviously very negatively impacting the quality of life of those afflicted. While this poll is questioning sufferers of many vestibular disorders, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo symptoms. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or 44 July 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
BPPV occurs when otoliths (small calcium carbonate particles) become dislodged from the membrane where they are normally embedded, inside of the organs within the inner ear, that detect movement. When these particles become trapped in the inner ear canals, abnormal perceptions of movement of the environment around you or of yourself occur due to the vestibular stimulation caused by the improper position of these particles. Specific head movements usually trigger the vertigo when true BPPV is occurring. These head movements result in reflexive eye movements, or nystagmus, which indicate which area of the inner ear
is involved. Board certified chiropractic neurologists use their extensive functional neurological training to detect the area involved, and are well equipped to treat BPPV through conservative measures including the Epley maneuver, specific chiropractic adjustments, balancing exercises, and general habituation exercises. Medical Microneedling
{
By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
Having hundreds of needles in your face sounds a little unappealing, right? Microneedling (rolling of a wheel covered in microscopic needles to create tiny skin punctures) is the latest and greatest dermatologic procedure for no downtime skin rejuvenation.
The hugely popular procedure in Europe and Asia has been booming in the USA as well. Actually, it’s not as threatening as it sounds. Microneedling is a quick, safe and effective way to refresh the face, neck or hands. Using a device called “SkinPen”, microneedling can be performed in as little as twenty minutes. SkinPen is a medical grade, state-ofthe-art microneedling device designed to reverse years of sun damage, improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation as well as enhance the
overall appearance of aging skin. SkinPen allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process by creating thousands of precise micro-injuries in the dermis, automatically triggering new collagen synthesis without causing scar tissue formation. It’s called Collagen Induction Therapy. Collagen Induction Therapy, is the procedure by which the body’s natural response to healing is used to increase the amount of extracellular matrix such as collagen or elastin in the skin. These tinsy “injuries” are enough to initiate the wound-healing
cascade. Multiply it by the hundreds of tiny channels created by the SkinPen devise and presto, thousands of new collagen and elastin fibers are produced – successfully providing excellent skin rejuvenation results with little or no downtime. Your skin will look and feel healthier! The actual procedure typically takes twenty to thirty minutes depending on the size and number of areas treated and the severity of damage to the skin. Patients typically tolerate microneedling treatment with SkinPen very well; many report little or no discomfort during the procedure, mostly since a numbing cream is applied to the treatment area thirty minutes prior to the procedure. Microneedling treatment is a minimally invasive procedure; however, since the skin is being penetrated there will be some mild visible effects afterwards. These effects will vary based on the needle depth used and the intensity of treatment. Acne scar treatment may produce slightly more side effects due to deeper treatment levels required. Typically even the most aggressive treatments only have a day or two of mild swelling and redness. However, compared to laser ablasion or deep chemical peels, the downtime is insignificant. Microneedling is a quick, safe and effective way to generate new collagen without using thermal energy or having any risk for scaring. It is the most natural and organic dermatologic method to revitalize skin. Dr. Thomas C. Balshi 4665 W. Atlantic Ave 561-272-6000 southflderm.com www.balshimd.com

In need of a crown? No problem!
{
BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA
Patients are now able to enjoy convenience and quality of care with the CEREC System.
From slight enhancements to major repairs, dentists offer a variety of techniques and procedures to improve your smile, regardless if you have cracked, broken, root canal-treated, missing or misshapen teeth. Dental crowns are a long-standing and proven treatment option to fix many of these dental issues, and crowns have come a long way. Traditionally, a dental crown is constructed in an off-site dental lab, meaning that the patient has to wear a temporary crown for at least two weeks before they are able to have their permanent crown placed. If you’ve ever had uncomfortable temporary crowns that kept falling out, or felt like you’ve spent your entire day at the dental office, then you know just how uncomfortable this traditional method is. However, modern technology now allows dentists to create crowns in just one visit. There is no longer a need for goopy impressions, a temporary crown, or additional wait time. Digital dentistry enables patients to enjoy their new smile from the moment they leave the office, allowing for greater quality of care and comfort. No waiting. No temporaries. No kidding. The CEREC CAD/CAM system has been on the market for roughly 30 years and more than 250 scientific studies have confirmed the clinical safety of tried and tested CEREC tooth restorations. Worldwide, more than 30 million tooth restorations have been produced with CEREC. CEREC, which is an acronym that stands for ceramic reconstruction, is a system that creates crowns that are milled by a hightech milling machine. Crowns are made using CAD/CAM software (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing), which is the same software used by architects and engineers. The process begins with a digital scan 48 JuLY 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
taken of the patient’s mouth, which takes about 10 minutes. This digital scan is much more precise than traditional impressions because it measures down to the micron, which is 1/1000 millimeters. The lab technician then takes the scan and creates a 3D render of the patient’s upper and lower arches using the CEREC software. This system creates a proposal of what the crown should look like based on the average anatomy of the patient’s adjacent teeth. The technician then modifies the design, taking into account the individual’s unique arch form and wear patterns. Once the design is finalized, the restoration is sent to the CEREC milling machine, where the machine mills the design in as few as eight minutes. As soon as the crown is finished milling, it is fit into the patient’s mouth. The technician makes any necessary adjustments and places the final aesthetic touches through staining and glazing the tooth so it matches the unique characteristics of that patient’s smile. The restoration is then baked in a kiln at 1500
degrees Fahrenheit, which takes about 15 minutes, and is then cemented in the patient’s mouth. This entire process, which used to take several weeks, is now complete in as few as three hours. The two main advantages of CEREC crowns are, by far, quality and convenience. Traditional crowns are usually made in an off-site lab where the technicians have had no contact with the patient. With this modern system, the dentist and technician have the capability to not only create a customized crown that matches the exact aesthetics of the surrounding teeth, but it can also flawlessly match the color as well as the anatomy of the missing tooth or of the adjacent teeth. So if you need a crown, ask your dental team if the CEREC System is right for you. They’ll have you smiling in no time! Mapping Your Fitness Plan
{
By Ashley Sica
When it comes to fitness many people find it very difficult maintain an exercise program. Most people start off with a bang, but soon after quit their exercise routine entirely. Hectic schedules, boredom and not having a “fitness plan” are usually the culprit. Below are some tools to help you plan and stay on your best fitness track.
The first thing to consider when mapping out your fitness plan is to ask yourself, “Do I have a fitness schedule?” If you have a fitness schedule, that’s awesome; if you don’t, now is the time to make one. One of the challenges with not having a fitness schedule is that you have nothing holding you accountable and little to work toward other than a desire to be in better shape. Having a fitness schedule is a must. Decide what times and days work for you and put your allotted time into your daily planner just as you would a work meeting, hair appointment and so on. Make the time (Yes, there is time in the day!), hold yourself accountable, and get to the gym. Next on the list is goal setting, which is one of the most important components when putting together a fitness plan. Having a “specific” goal will allow you to focus on training and give you extra motivation to exercise. It’s a lot easier to make it to the finish line if you have an attainable goal in sight. Whatever this goal may be, write it down and put it somewhere where you will be reminded of it everyday. Committing your goal to paper and seeing the written words are more powerful than just having a thought or talking about it. The next step is to decide on your fitness timeline. Whether it is 2
50 July 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
weeks or 2 months having a fitness timeline will help hold you accountable. For example, “I would like to loose 2 pounds in the next two weeks or in 2 months I would like to increase my aerobic capacity and drop a pant size.” Be specific about your timeline and try your best not to deviate from it. Last but not least you need an action plan. Before you get to the gym you NEED to have a specific game plan of what you will be working on that day. A lot of people waste time meandering around the gym wondering what they should do next. Decide ahead of time the specific body parts and exercises you will be performing along with the amount of repetitions and sets you plan on doing. Having an appropriate action plan will keep you focused and your time in the gym efficient and quick. If this all sounds foreign to you or you feel like you need a some guidance in getting your fitness plan started then call in the help of a nationally certified personal trainer to get you going and on the right track! Palm Beach Botox is the brainchild of Samuel Siddiqui, MD. For the past 10 years he has been administering Botox and fillers to women who want to turn back the clock.
As the doctor puts it, “We have been using these products and fillers for over 10 years to help our patients’ live better lives. Botox has been a miraculous discovery that is extremely safe in professional hands and has been used for a myriad of indications including cosmetic, migraines, excessive sweating and spasms. At Palm Beach Botox our professional staff treats all of these indications.” Part of living a better life is often times having smoother supple skin that glows. If a celebrity can age backwards, then many women (and men) are asking themselves, “Why not me?” That is the reason Dr. Siddiqui has added esthetic services to their roster of treatments. Their medical grade DiamondTome® Hydrofacial has diamond tips that exfoliate the top layer of the skin and help erase fine lines and wrinkles leaving it supple and smooth. Removing the outer layer of skin cells leaves a smother texture and promotes the growth of healthy new skin cells. Skin Resurfacing also stimulates the elastic tissue beneath the surface of the skin and gives it a healthy firm appearance. This treatment can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, back, elbows and feet. The best part is that the DT2 Skin Resurfacing treatment is non-invasive, pain-free and requires no down time afterwards. Their state-of-the-art Hydro Wand® is another non-invasive treatment that uses different serums for varying soothing effects on the skin. The Vitamin C serum brightens firms and plumps the skin and renews its in-
herent moisture. The best part of this treatment is that it takes only 30 minutes and has little if no downtime. According to the creator of this revolutionary treatment, “No other system can provide a deeper exfoliation and product penetration than the combination of the Altair Instruments Diamondtome® and Hydro Wand®. The results are instant and skin benefits greatly from the depth of penetration, hydration and nourishment all in one treatment.” The infusion therapy can also help decrease brown spots, wrinkles, fine lines, oily and acne prone skin. Guests are pampered and treated like royalty while getting their bodies and faces smoothed and sealed with exclusive products that protect them from the harsh winds of reality (the wind and sun too). European Wax Center is the object of affection from clients because of their patented products and exclusive wax. “Our wax is known as ‘Comfort Wax’ because it doesn’t adhere to the skin, instead it takes hair from the follicle,” said European Wax Center Franchisee Amy Cropper. The patented four-step process takes your skin from rough to ready and is called “4 Steps to Gorgeous™ Process”. They prep and pamper the skin with a pre-wax cleanser that removes make-up, oil or lotion from the skin. Next is a pre-wax oil that ensures the wax adheres to the hair and not your skin. Then a comfort wax is applied and gently removed, and the last step is “Renew Me” Restoring Serum.

But he’s smitten with European Wax Center of Delray. “I go to European Wax Center every six weeks. I find European Wax Center’s four-step process to be the best. It cleans the skin, treats it and the wax doesn’t stick to the skin. It also lasts longer than any other shop. The quality of the wax is excellent,” said the insurance broker. Not only do first time guests enjoy a complimentary brow, underarm or bikini line wax (for women) or ear, nose or brow (for men) but their products and process is one

that leaves guests with smooth luxurious skin and an expansive feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation. European Wax Center is also a place that values the concept of luxury without the sky high price tag. You get pampered and beautified for reasonable prices that range from yearly unlimited Wax Passes to discounts with multiple visits. There is also a Student Wax Pass that gives you one free visit with every three. They have six highly trained aestheticians who see the inherent superiority of the European Wax Center’s exclusive products and four step process. “This is by far the best wax, I use it on my skin and get amazing results,” said Lindsay Taylor. “It smoothes the skin, exfoliates and adds nutrients and anti-oxidants to the skin as well.” According to Cropper guests love their patented wax process and don’t like to use razors. “Our process removes hair from the root and cleans out the pores. It’s a life-long process but the skin grows less dense as time goes on. Come here to be pampered and feel beautiful.” They also have beautifully packaged products so you can continue this beauty regimen in your home. There is Strut Smoothly™ that offers “lightweight exfoliates, secret-weapon ingrown hair treatments and soft-to-the-touch restoring serum.” The Strut Lavishly™ products cleanse, restore, and pamper you with soothing moisturizing Bath and Body products. Available in three scents there are ultra-hydrating body lotions, dualaction body washes and soothing body polish. This collection slows hair re-growth and makes skin supple and soft. The Strut Boldly™ is their exclusive brow collection of natural powders, highlighters and other tools to achieve brow-perfection. Guests who come to European Wax Center range in age from 12 to 94 and all have one thing in common – they value European Wax Center’s superior quality products, luxurious pampering and know that beauty should be seamless from the inside out. You also have the option of waxing any area of your body from your head to your toes (literally). It’s private, classy and clean. Don’t wait - head over to European Wax Center of Delray Beach. Their mantra is: “We believe luxurious waxing isn’t just for the privileged. Everyone deserves beautiful, gorgeous skin by not concealing who you are, but by having the courage and confidence to reveal your natural beautiful skin.” European Wax Center of Delray Beach Delray Place | 410 East Linton Boulevard, 706 Delray Beach FL 33483 (561) 303-0908 www.waxcenter.com/fl-delray-beach

The Rumors Are True:
THE ELEVEN DREAM TEAM By diane feen
{
photos by melissa korman
Eleven Spa is truly a class act. “The space and luxury of it is so unique you have to see it to believe it. And the best news is that we’re introducing our new partnership with Peter DeRosa,” said Eleven Spa founder Nikki Oden.
Not only is the Spa, which has an outdoor pool and cabanas, recently been updated to include a boardroom and art gallery, but it’s now upped its celebrity status to include DeRosa as its Master Stylist and Partner. Now named Peter DeRosa Salon at Eleven, this new name signifies a luxurious turning point in the elegant pedigree of this Salon and Spa. “This is the biggest thing that’s happened in our 11 years in business. I’ve never had a partnership of this level of professionalism.
58 July 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
We’re stepping up our level of service, education of employees and celebrity status,” said the ever glamorous Oden. Oden has a point. DeRosa has a following – that includes celebrities Sam Edelman, Jennifer Gimenez, Brandi Glanville and Paula Abdul. But it’s not only the celebrity buzz that surrounds DeRosa, it’s his energy and inherent sophistication for everything beautiful. He has a client following that travels to see him in Florida from all over the world. It’s
not unusual for DeRosa to travel to Dubai, Hawaii, Brazil, St. Maarten and other parts of the globe to be on site to make his clients look beautiful and coiffed. That is exactly why Oden is thrilled to make this merger. “This signifies a true calling for the utmost in salon sophistication and elegant offerings. Peter has a command of what’s going on and this new partnership is where people will connect and collaborate, start businesses and meet people. We have the perfect
venue for your next business meeting as well as host your next special event or party.” When you attend to one of their parties you will enjoy this California cool experience that is missing in South Florida. The space invites you to relax and drop your cares at the door, and the selection of guests that gravitate to this modern structure with outdoor pool and cabanas is eclectic and cool. As for DeRosa, he’s found his professional and personal match in charisma and charm with Oden. A former money manager with a Fortune 500 Financial Firm Oden has style, class and smarts. She’s transformed this warehouse-like space into a Hollywood retreat with amenities not found anywhere else. “Don Ebbert (Oden’s partner) and I have been obsessed with creating a world class spa experience at Eleven, but we’ve always been one puzzle piece short. In my first strategy session with Peter, it was evident that we found our missing partner,” says Oden. And if you ask DeRosa he’s equally as excited about this merger of the minds and matter. “I’ve never been this excited about a project. I truly believe this opportunity will not only springboard my personal creativity in the salon and style industry, but also allow me to work closely with the Eleven team in making it one of the most unique salon, spa and event experiences in south Florida.” According to Oden, DeRosa brings not only sophistication and experience necessary to succeed in this business (salon and spa) but he also brings over 20 years of experience as former co-owner of Delray based PeterMark Salon. Oden has an equally impressive pedigree. She has grown the brand over the last eleven years with a location in the Versace mansion and another in Las Vegas. She also created her own skincare line called ElevenSkin. “I know
what my guests want in a salon, which is why I am joining forces with Delray’s top stylist Peter DeRosa.” This new chapter in the history at Eleven Spa, which also includes a savvy clothing and accessory boutique, is the biggest thing to happen to the beauty and spa business in South Florida, not just Delray Beach. “Peter brings a celebrity level of professionalism to the salon. We compliment each others’ strengths and have been friends for years. We always wanted to do something together and this decision to come together for the 11th Anniversary of Eleven is the perfect marriage,” said Oden. Both Oden and DeRosa are geniuses when it comes to products, elegance and beauty. “We are fun and have an electric energy that is magnetic and draws people to us. This new venture is about Partnership and Attraction. People will want to come be part of this group, that is much stronger than it was before,” said Oden. Oden’s original vision remains integral to
the guest experience. “Eleven Spa is about better; it’s about the little things.” To celebrate the new Peter DeRosa Salon at Eleven there will be a Sexy Summer Pool Party on Sunday July 10th, starting at 11:00 am. DeRosa, Oden, and Ebbert are redefining what it means to have a true salon and spa escape in Delray Beach, and the upcoming celebration of Peter’s official first day will be a day to remember, said Oden. Guests can enjoy an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment. Dedicated cabanas are available to reserve while soaking up the sun and mingling with celebrity influencers. And to make it even more enticing - there’s ample parking just behind this heavenly spa retreat. I
f she were a person, Atlantic Ave Magazine would still be a child, but for a publication 10 is a big number; a milestone that signals that readers and advertisers value the magazine because staying afloat in a competitive, ever changing market is not easy. So excuse us if we feel good about this anniversary. We are proud of our work, grateful for your continued support and attention and excited about what the future brings. And we believe that our future is indeed a bright one. Despite the headlines that decry “the death of print”, we find a different truth. Indeed, local magazines that are laser focused and hyperlocal are still great businesses and very important parts of the community. While digital media and the Internet are wonderful technologies, they are often so broad that you can’t find
out what’s happening in your hometown. From our beginnings—a decade ago—we have been focused on one thing and one thing only—Atlantic Avenue and Delray Beach. For 10 years—and 120 issues—we have covered the local businesses, personalities, issues and everyday people that make Delray such a dynamic and fascinating city. Each month, we are a 100 plus page celebration of Delray—its fashion, style, events and culture. In these pages we have identified the entrepreneurs, dreamers and key movers and shakers while also capturing life on the Avenue and in Pineapple Grove through text and photos. It’s a labor of love for us— love of this city and love of its people, promise, potential and unique personality. Delray is a city unlike any other in South Florida. It’s still part small town, but
has big city amenities, charm, art, music and talent. Delray wrestles with major issues—and over the years we have covered more than a few, but this community is teeming with promise and creativity which draws an eclectic brew of people to its vibrant downtown and beautiful neighborhoods. We have been thrilled to see Atlantic Ave Magazine travel with our readers across the country and world; and pleased to print your pictures when you take selfies with our magazine. From the beginning we have strived to be an attractive, well-written, beautifully photographed and relevant publication; a magazine where residents, business owners and tourists can find advice, news, features, fashion, health and food tips on a regular basis. We wanted our readers to hold onto the book all month and let it serve as a guide to how to live and experience Delray in

the best way possible. Over the years, we have been fortunate to have loyal readers who regularly stop us and compliment the magazine on its look and content. And we have to say we beam when that happens. But we also welcome ideas and ways we can get better. That’s how magazines grow and stay important to their reader’s lives. We have also been blessed with loyal advertisers who make our publication possible and keep it free to our readers. Our goal has always been to help grow our advertisers’ businesses and to promote shopping local, which is a core principle of our company. We have also been fortunate to have talented staff and contributors from great designers and photographers to talented writers, sales reps, editors and columnists. During the past 10 years, we have become family and many of our talented staff has been here for most if not all of our history. That is both a testament to the culture of our magazine and also shows a dedication to our mission and to Delray. Highlights of our first 10 years? Too many to list; but let’s say we have enjoyed spotlighting 120 special Delray Beach contributors in our “City People” feature, we have loved Melissa Korman’s photos of life on the Avenue and The Grove and it has been a joy to spotlight the events, culture and businesses that make our town sing. It’s been an amazing ride— with so many people and supporters to thank that we could fill these pages twice and still need more room. Here’s to the next 10 years of success, your success and Delray’s success. We plan to be here—capturing it all as our amazing city evolves and continues to delight. Thanks for so many memories and here’s to the memories to come.

Want A Classy Fashion Stance? Head Over To
HY PA - HY MA By Diane feen

photos by melissa korman
Fashion, like food, has many dimensions and taste levels. But one thing you can’t dispute is good taste and elegance.
Elegance doesn’t have to be expensive or flashy, it’s doesn’t require a hip designer name or superstar endorsement. Class is in a category of its own – perceived by those who covet its inherent value. When you see someone or something classy a bell goes off – the thrill of it is enchanting. The subtlety is exhilarating and the nature of it is expansive. That’s why discerning customers flock to Hy Pa - Hy Ma. This hidden gem in the Waterway East Shopping Plaza has exciting clothing for women (jersey fringe skirts and silk chiffon tops) that you won’t see anywhere else. You’ll also get one-on-one personalized service with a staff that is dedicated to all customers whether local or out-of-towners. It’s nice to go shopping, but it’s even nicer to explore the roots of your material creativity in a pleasant stress-free environment.
62 July 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Hy Pa - Hy Ma has free parking in front (and back) and you won’t have to fight crowds, beg for service and walk a mile to see if your size is on the rack. As a matter of fact, their fashion savvy staff awaits your visit. If you need a different size or color it will be brought to the fitting room for you. If you want to chat about your latest heartbreak or heartthrob, they’ll be all ears. But if fashion is your favorite competitive sport then Hy Pa - Hy Ma is your oasis. They have an excellent selection of trousers to simplify and slenderize your torso, swing jackets in playful prints, dresses in horoscope print pastels and glitter adorned tunics. To complete your look there are Frank Lyman belts that are whimsical and
JAW MEET FLOOR sexy, and Sondra Roberts handbags that are part art and part utilitarian in nature. A trip to Hy Pa - Hy Ma is an upbeat creative fashion endeavor. There’s so much to see, so much to fawn over and so much to admire. Whether you’re 25 or 95 they have clothing that will suit your lifestyle and personal style. Hy Pa - Hy Ma will perk up your endorphins and uplift your spirit for special occasions, business, beach days or cocktail parties. If you are a summer bride or mother-of-the-bride there is something show-stopping that will make everyone wonder, “Where did she get that?” That’s why women enjoy shopping at this hidden retail gem. The clothing and accessories have a colorful exuberance and elegance for any occasion. “We are a boutique for busy executives, CEOs, socialites, moms and more. We have customers on the Washington social circuit and others who belong to yacht clubs. If you need an outfit for a resort or a charity luncheon we have the perfect outfit for you,” said owner Nance Bernet, one of the first shop owners in the Waterway East Shopping Plaza when it opened 38 years ago. Since then a lot has happened in Delray Beach, but Hy Pa Hy Ma has remained a mainstay in fashion. They also serve the community with graciousness. “We do a lot of fashion shows and support local charities and churches as much as we can. We provide instant service and excellent customer service.” They also have a popular $25 clothing rack that sports fun fashion items like crochet fringe vests, slenderizing Capri pants, printed tunic tops and whatever else seems to flow that way. “We are well known for our sale racks and summer specials. We have women who stop by every week to see what’s on our sale racks,” said Joan. There is also a half-off rack and a $50 rack – and you’ll never know what will be there, but for sure it will be colorful, stylish and unique. “There’s no end to our bargains,” adds Joan. If you’re in the mood for a retail pick-me-up or a stylish dress, pants, tunic or show stopping necklace, stop by Hy Pa - Hy Ma. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the standard of excellence in material matter and their friendly neighborhood welcome.

We want our customers to feel and look their absolute best and it makes our day when someone comes in after being referred by a friend or, even better yet, when a customer brings a visiting family member or friend in to see the store!” Make sure to stop by Circe & Swag this summer for fabulous summer pieces and an unbeatable shopping experience. Passionate Kisses: Getting the Love You Want By john davis, lmhc
The Sweetness of Long Lasting Love “Passionate Kisses” is a Grammy-winning song penned by the American Alt Country performer Lucinda Williams and made famous by the 1993 single version by Mary Chapin Carpenter. In it she cries “Shouldn’t I have this? Shouldn’t I have all of this, and passionate kisses?” She shouts: “Is it too much to ask? I want a comfortable bed that won’t hurt my back, food to fill me up and warm clothes and all that stuff.” “Shouldn’t I have all of this, and passionate kisses from you?” One of my favorites for many years, her words are tucked gently into my mind and surface often in my counseling with couples seeking better, stronger, more resilient marriages. It is especially rewarding with marriages that have stood the test of many years, and life’s adversities, maturing into delicious, sustainable partnerships giving back ever increasing gifts. Raising children, building estates, discovering what matters most...it is in mature relationship that we know ourselves most ful- ly and deeply. We discover what inspires us, but we also learn what may scare and defeat us.
How We Lose It It’s deceptively easy to leave out the “passionate kisses” over time. We make routine at home and work. We forget to touch and linger. We assume our partner will “be there” for us when we turn toward them...sometimes for any number of reasons, some sub-conscious, we fear kissing with force and feeling and, instead, get by on “cheek pecks” and “air hugs”. Evenings spent checking Facebook. Too much time at the gym. Over reliance on alcohol. Rarely alone with our beloved. This isn’t enough for healthy sexuality to flourish. The real thing is called “making love” for a reason. In our intimate, wet, hot, passionate sexual contact, we create an extraordinary experience that has staying power and a quality that can nourish our lives and give them meaning. It is an experience of magic and delight when we get it right, especially when it’s with someone who’s known us for a long time. How do we keep “passionate kisses” in our marriages? How do we keep “finding” our partner and friend and lover? How We Get it Back Internationally renowned couples therapist Hedi Schleifer refers to the “space” between couples as
“sacred” and teaches that this “sacred space” requires maintenance, not unlike a garden. She warns that, if not “maintained”, the space will “self-pollute”. Vigilance is essential. Frequent tender dialogue critical. Without passionate, intimate physical contact, without our willingness to take risks and be vulnerable by revealing ourselves to our partners... the space will falter and become stale and produce stress. Hedy defines “intimacy” as “intome-I-will-allow-you-to-see”. I ask couples seeking help if they’ve arranged their home to promote the intimacy they say they seek. So many of life’s central concerns, if poorly managed can deaden us to our partner’s needs. Excess work, excess focus on children at the expense of “mommy and daddy time”, failure to take good care of ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally, substance abuse and dependency. Dr. David Schnarch, author of the excellent book “Passionate Marriage” cautions that sometimes below our awareness, undercurrents of hostility and sadness may run through our marriages and keep us fearful, angry and distant. We grow afraid to try repairing our partnership. Unwittingly, we treat each other carelessly. Struggles over money and control can flatten desire and build resentment that undermine authentic, passionate connection. (And create fertile ground for extra-marital affairs.) Mature relationships require constant “gardening”. Slowing down and spending quiet time is essential. Listening. Sometimes brief periods of marriage therapy can create healthy patterns that last a lifetime. The myth of “automatic erotic arousal” is an adolescent fantasy. If lucky, and mindful, we know more and want more as adults, and it takes effort to get it. Mary Chapin Carpenter asks: “Do I want too much? Am I going overboard to want that touch? I shout it out to the night: Give me what I deserve, ‘cause it’s my right!” John Davis, LMHC Licensed Mental Health Counselor 561-213-8030 www.johndaviscounseling.com

FIDO’S PLAY N STAY By Diane feen
Rusty is here to play!
But if you ask Tom Petro, owner of Fido’s Play N Stay in Delray, he might disagree. “When my dog was home all day and I was working in the corporate world her boredom would become destructive. After I started taking her to doggie daycare she was ecstatic,” said Petro, who left the corporate world and opened Fido’s Play N Stay six months ago. Petro didn’t leave the corporate world to increase his workload from 50 hours a week to 80; he just loves animals and wants dogs to be happy. This immersion in doggie behaviors and synchronicity with its owner is a product of our obsession

with the ones we love – even if they have four legs instead of two. “Dogs are increasingly becoming part of the family and are treated like our children. Dogs (like people) need to be socialized, eat well and get exercise when their parents are away for the day or week.” So that’s exactly what happens in this newly created 7,400-square-foot dogcentric facility off Linton Blvd. In this vast doggie terrain dogs get to play off leash with other dogs (while getting proper exercise and playtime) in a safe supervised fenced area. “Fido’s Play N Stay is a fun, safe, stimuFun with Friends!

lating environment so owners can work, shop or run errands. The daycare ensures the safety of your dog and makes sure they all play nicely together. We have a caring compassionate staff and safe fun playground equipment,” said Petro, who has doggie treadmills for dogs who want to lose weight or run indoors. This type of doggie daycare ensures that owners don’t come home to a hyper (or destructive) dog that’s been alone all day. Instead owners pick up an exhausted dog whose energy level matches their own, said Petro. According to experts many of the maladaptive dog behaviors come from lack of exercise which is why this type of daycare helps alleviate canine behavior problems. Owners will also have peace of mind knowing their dog is well cared for and

exercised throughout the day. The facility is 100% climate controlled with air filtration systems to provide a healthy environment. Dogs are separated into different play groups depending on size, temperament and activity level. If you’re planning a trip out of town Fido’s Play N Stay offers Dog Boarding. Dogs get to play all day and sleep off the day’s activity in individual indoor secure suites in the evening. “Dogs can be as active as they choose. Some dogs want to play all day while others
like to lounge on the playground equipment or take naps,” adds Petro. They also offer dog scales, healthy treats and free initial treadmill exercise. They offer bathing, but in the near future they will be offering full grooming services. The facility is also alarmed and monitored and open 365 days a year. And the best part is that you can watch your pooch from the comfort of your home – or while on vacation - with one of their apps for your iPhone or live Webcam on your computer. They also do Evaluation-Temperament Tests and Administer Medication. For dog lovers everywhere Fido’s Play N Stay has become a safe port in the storm. “My dog has done daycare and overnight boarding at Fido’s and absolutely loves it. I can tell each time I pick her her up that she had a great time. Also, when I check in on her using the webcam she is playing and having a blast. The facility is new and extremely clean. The owner and staff are passionate about what they do and care for the dogs very much. My wife and I are glad to have found such a wonderful place for our pup for when we are at work or out of town,” said Doug Johnson.
Hours are Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 6:30 pm, Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 9 am to 11 am and 3 to 5 pm. You can drop off or pick up your dog anytime during those hours. It is recommended you make reservations at least 24 hours in advance to ensure space to play. What are you waiting for? Your beloved pooch deserves the best. Pak It Tight is more than your typical postal office or big box shipping center.
For over 20 years, the Delray Beach store has offered a Mom and Pop atmosphere that helps customers with all their postal needs. When owners James Giannuzzi and Robert Mooney purchased the store five years ago, they expanded the services offering custom boxing and shipping, notary, selling packing supplies, greeting cards and art; along with printing, scanning and faxing services. They are also experts at custom boxing and shipping high-end merchandise from auction houses, and can help you sell and ship your eBay items. Pak It Tight also has a gift shop with beautiful trinkets and specialty gifts for the entire family. Convenience is at the core of their mission as they offer passport photos and will guide you through the process from start to finish; and you can get a P.O. Box for your mail. “We pretty much do everything and serve

as a home office for anyone who doesn’t have one. Anyone can come in and if they don’t have an office at home or need to send a document, we can assist them with faxing, laminating, print work, and more. We are able to handle everything here,” said James Giannuzzi. Pak It Tight goes above and beyond the typical shipping business for their customers. The owner focuses on alleviating customers’ stress, helping with time management and solving your problem. “You can bring anything in here that is not boxed, and we will find a way to ship it,” said James. Pak It Tight even offers a convenient pick up and delivery service. The owner will go to your college students dorm room, box all their belongings and ship them to their par-
ents home. Snowbirds can rest easy because Pak It Tight can pick up all their clothing and items they need to ship back up North. The owner has much experience in the shipping business having worked for UPS for over 20 years. James noticed a need for custom boxing and shipping and bought the business five years ago. “When I was in the shipping business prior, I would notice that many customers did not know how to box their items. Before I bought the store, they did not offer custom boxing, only postal service. I decided to implement the custom boxing aspect and it took off. That convenience is critical and cuts the customers time in half. What would take an hour for a customer to box themselves, now only takes 10 minutes,” added James.
Pak It Tight has been compared to an old time general store where everybody knows your name and your family. “We like to establish a relationship with our customers and get to know about them and their families; and they know about me and my family. We go above and beyond with customer service. We will come to your house and pick up your items and then box and ship them at our store,” said the owner, adding, “You are not just coming in and getting a service and leaving. Personal relationships are established. I like to go home at the end of day and know that I can help someone out in a small way.” Customers praise the family owned and
operated full service postal store for exceeding all expectations. Ken Shand, a long-time customer, stated, “The manner in which I make my living requires the assistance of a professional packer and shipper on a daily basis. For the last 3 years I have relied on the services of Pak It Tight because of their professionalism, honesty and genuine attempt to keep costs within reason. I highly recommend them.” Regular customer James Amira, added, “My best experience was at Pak It Tight. The owner James and his son Timothy were very professional and I always know I’m in good hands when I bring my stuff to them to ship. I ship a lot of artwork and sell a lot of stuff
on eBay and I trust all my merchandise with James and his staff. James always makes sure to take the time to make me feel comfortable and to show me that my item will arrive safely and without damage. They are full service Post Office and will do anything for the customer to make the shipping experience less stressful on the shipper. I highly recommend them.” Bring any valuable item to Pak It Tight and you can trust that James will make sure it is custom boxed and shipped without worry! Medical Bills Got You Down?
Try Human Health Advocates By skip sheffield
{
Feel like you are being ripped off by your doctors, hospital and insurance companies?
Chances are you are being taken advantage by the sorry state of the American medical profession. Ken Klein has made it his mission to help people in financial distress due to medical emergencies. Klein founded Human Health Advocates, LLC to go to bat for people beleaguered by unexpected medical bills. For a fee, Klein will investigate the claims and confront the doctor, hospital or insurance company that may be over-charging or falsely charging for services rendered. Klein confronts those billing, and is often able to negotiate down or even eliminate fees. “Most people don’t understand balance billing,” explains Klein. “That happens when an in-network hospital sends in a specialist who is out-of-network. The patient is billed for what insurance won’t pay. It can run up into thousands of dollars.” Patients are at their most vulnerable when they are rushed to an emergency room. Sometimes they are not even conscious. The harsh reality comes weeks, even months later. Challenging an insurance company is particularly difficult. “It is very difficult for an ordinary person to contact an insurance person who has any authority,” Klein continues. “Often the initial call is not even a real person, but an android.” If you get the idea Klein doesn’t much like insurance companies, you are right. Even when a person thinks he is fully covered, there are ways the insurance companies can weasel out of paying. Klein has developed a way to break through the barriers. He does the same thing with hospital billing and doctor billing. He says there are three categories of people who find themselves in arrears. The first is the victims of balance billing, which is for
legitimate service, but out of the covered insurance network. Klein cites many examples when he dealt directly with the insurance company or the billing specialist and got charges reduced. The second category is uninsured people. You may think insurance premiums are too high and you can get along without it, but when something catastrophic happens, it can wipe you out financially. Klein has an inhouse coding specialist who presents what would be a more reasonable charge for someone of limited means and negotiates with the biller. A much larger category is the insured who has a very large deductible. Klein urges people to get Estimates of Benefits (EOB)
when signing up for insurance. Then there is the category of human error. Klein estimates 50 to 80 percent of medical bills have errors, including double billing, inappropriate billing or overcharges, and procedures deemed not necessary. Klein, a former lawyer, has devised a 45-minute counseling session to help people with the pitfalls of medical billing. “I have been doing this for several years, and I moved back to Boca Raton, where my wife and I used to live, two and a half years ago,” reveals Klein. “When I have a victory it makes me feel really good.” The web site is www.humanhealthadvocates.com. Woman Of Grace
BETTINA YOUNG By Diane Feen
{
Photo by melissa korman
Bettina Young is a ray of sunshine that peeks through the clouds of randomness. When her husband Greg first met her he was mesmerized by the mere wattage of her being. “When I met my husband he said everything faded to black and white and I was in living color.”
Greg has a point – Bettina is a force of invincible magnitude – but it’s not an inward pull, it radiates outward. This gravitational pull is her motto and as well as her mission. “There is nothing in my life that has given me more and made me happier than being able to give,” said the former ballerina who resides with her family in Delray Beach. If there is truth to the saying that “to whom much is given, much is expected,” then Bettina is on the right side of history. She grew up in the suburbs of New York, was accepted to the School of American Ballet at Julliard, modeled in the US and Europe, and settled down in Lake Cuomo, Italy. She eventually moved to Palm Beach County, met and married Greg Young and concentrated on raising her five children. But to Bettina raising children is more than taking them to school and making sure they’ve eaten well balanced meals. “Every morning I tell my boys to be kind. I want them to be good fathers, good husbands and gentlemen.” And so far her wish has been granted. Her three sons Andrew, Jack and Daniel have all played violin in the St. Andrews School orchestra and have taken their talent on the road to raise awareness and funds for those in need. The family unit (that includes daughter Alexandra and son Nicolo) is one that Bettina has choreographed into a cohesive harmonic resonance that extends to those around them. They often host dinners at their home for AmeriCorps Volunteers from the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. And each year Bettina raises funds and emotional capital for boards and organizations that support worthy causes. Though she doesn’t like to draw attention to herself she has played a vital role in organizations such as the Literacy Coalition and the Bethesda Hospital Foundation. She is the co-Chair of the Magnolia Society, is on the Women’s Wellness Luncheon Committee and the

Board of the Bethesda Hospital Foundation Woman of Grace Luncheon committee. Bettina has been on the Literacy Coalition Board for five years and is the upcoming vice-president. She was chosen as a Woman of Grace in 2013 for her work with the Literacy Coalition, Bethesda Hospital Foundation, Boys & Girls Club, Lupus Foundation of Southeast Florida, Gulf Stream School and The Renaissance Learning Center. Though it is daunting to collect all her accolades and affiliations, it was a calling that broke through her consciousness like a speeding meteorite. “I discovered my passion when we enrolled our children at Gulf Stream School 20 years ago. There I met wonderful mothers who were very involved in the community. I was invited to serve on the Women of Grace committee and at the luncheon I heard the most heartwarming stories from the nominees. I immediately became involved with Bethesda Hospital Women of Grace committee and The Magnolia Society.” Bettina’s affiliation and dedication to these boards and organizations is not one of frivolity – it’s truly a selfless act of compassion. “Fundraisers are not just about going to lunch or dinner, it’s about learning and listening to others and seeing where I can make a difference.” So what does this golden girl do when she is hosting, serving, chairing or doing other charitable activities? “I work on fundraising, sponsorships, table decorations, location, sometimes even the menu. It’s a lot of brainstorming with a wonderful group of women.” Amen. Bettina is also a literacy wonk. It is something that showed up her depth of field a while ago and has become one of her biggest passions (aside from her family). “I am very involved in the Literacy Coalition. Our newest program, Building Better Readers helps struggling students learn to read. We trained 150 volunteers to work with first and second graders in 25 Title
1 schools. The students are showing great progress and our volunteers love to see the impact they’re having in children’s lives. We are focusing on raising funds to continue this important program.” One thing about this blond beauty with the porcelain skin and effusive hand gestures is that she shuns the spotlight. If Bettina were a banner it would be shrouded behind shrubbery – but her importance in the community is as vital as an Olympic Torch. Just ask Kristen Calder CEO of the Literacy
Coalition. “Bettina is extraordinary. She’s thoughtful, dedicated, kind and very committed. If you ask her to do something she follows through with grace and an enthusiasm that is contagious. She’s helped so many organizations in the community.” Bettina and her charitable angels are looking forward to The Women’s Wellness Luncheon on September 27th. The event includes a Health Expo where guests can learn about the Centers for Excellence at Bethesda Hospital, speak with doctors and staff, and learn
about services provided. The guest speaker will be pop culture icon Leeza Gibbons, who cared for her mother with Alzheimer’s. Gibbons will speak about women’s health issues and living a healthy balanced life while juggling chores and inevitable pot holes of reality. But luckily these organizations have someone like Bettina to spread goodness, raise awareness and funds for causes that are often neglected yet vital in a society that values humanity. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | July 2016

SCUOLA VECCHIA The Greatness Of Italy Now Gluten Free By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman
{
Making great Italian food is an art form. No one knows that better than Sharon and Shaun Aloisio. The duo (mother and son) have put a hold on history to honor the pizza of Naples, Italy.
Both mother and son were so taken with the heritage of this time honored tradition that they insisted on bringing it back to South Florida in all its glory. And a lot of people are thankful they did. “This is the best pizza I have ever eaten in the United States. I go to Naples, Italy and I can tell you what good pizza is,” said Tommy Quinn, who lives in Cannes and is visiting Delray. The dapper foodie has been to Scuola Vecchia two times since his arrival and he’s smitten with the lightness of being and the flavor-filled calzones and pizza at this local Italian restaurant. That’s an honor coming from a man (Quinn) whose father made fresh mozzarella and Ricotta cheese for a living. It’s people like Quinn who understand the subtlety and precision of fresh pizza dough imported from Italy and hand-stretched to 86

make it light as a feather. It’s not only lower in fat and carbs, but it has a sweet flavor that inherits its taste from the imported San Marzano tomatoes that land on its terrain. The real news – for those who can’t eat gluten – is that Scuola Vecchia now makes Gluten Free Pizza with any of their toppings. And that’s a big deal in the gluten free world. “I had one customer who almost cried when she found out she could eat a gluten free pizza,” said President of the Associazone Pizzaliola Napoletani, Roberto Caporuscio. It wasn’t an overnight creation at this Napolitano Pizza restaurant (that also serves fresh homemade pasta from the Gods). “My mentor Roberto Caporuscio showed me how to make gluten-free pizza by hand stretching and kneading the dough,” said Sharon, who makes all the delightfully decadent fresh pasta dishes that grace the menu. When you have a restaurant that is owneroperated you get the essence of their passion and the dedication of their labor. “I take pride in the authenticity and the whole culture of Italian cooking. That’s why people remark how fresh our food is – that’s important to us.” It’s also important to Rich Buckhantz and his wife Emily, who frequent this quaint Italian neighborhood haunt a few times a month. Rich is so taken with the meatballs and the tomato sauce he swoons over it like a lover. “The tomato sauce here is light and amazing. I also love the pizza Margherita, the Fettuccini pasta and the meatballs. The sauce is so good I could drink it like soup,” he said gleefully. Buckhantz isn’t the only one who knows the difference between real Napolitano Pizza and the imposters. That’s the reason that Scuola Vecchia has won numerous national and local awards. And all of their pizza and pasta dishes have no preservatives and are imported from Italy or handmade from local vendors (think heavenly gelato). Even though the menu impresses everyone who eats there, Sharon is never satisfied with the status quo. That’s why she continues to experiment with new pizzas, new pasta dishes and desserts that will have you unbuttoning your pants on a whim. It’s also the reason that Scuola Vecchia was just voted one of the best pizza restaurants in South Florida by Trip Advisor. They also received a new certificate from Caporuscio (who is a celebrity in the Pizza world). But despite all the accolades Sharon and Shaun remain steadfast in their careful watch (and strict adherence) to this Napolitano legacy. Their newest dishes (created by Sharon and Roberto Canonico) are Caprese
Caprese Di Tonno
Con Mozzarella with fresh imported Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese from Italy and homemade Barrata cheese with sliced tomatoes. Another newcomer is the Caprese di Tonno, imported Italian Tuna with yellow tomatoes drizzled with fresh Pesto Sauce. For a new twist on an old favorite they recently introduced Pizza Pescatori, a white pizza with jumbo Shrimp and Clams drizzled with Pesto and imported Buffalo Mozzarella (this can be made with gluten-free). One of our favorites was the Pizza Romeo, a White Pizza with homemade mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced potatoes, crispy pancetta and fresh rosemary. This delicate, yet flavorful pizza will ring in an ecstatic thrill to the palate. And why not? The mission at Scuola Vecchia is to tantalize the senses with fresh ingredients that make it impossible to eat pizza elsewhere. But a word of caution – Don’t discount Sharon’s homemade Pasta dishes. The Lasagna de Carne is superb, the Eggplant Parmigiana is thinly sliced and fried with Parmesan Cheese and oven fired Tomato Sauce. Their homemade Meatball dishes with San Marzano Tomato Sauce are also legendary.
There’s one Award Winning Pizza that begs for attention - the Keste’. It’s made with homemade imported fresh Buffalo Mozzarella, Tomato Sauce, Prosciutto de Parma, Arugula, Shaved Gran Cru, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Basil. Served piping hot it’s deliciously decadent, and one of the finest examples of the Neapolitan Pizza tradition. The Gluten Free Pizza is also terrific. It has a unique crust that is tasty and light and can be prepared exactly like any pizza on their menu. Before you leave this quaint Italian culinary treasure try their homemade Gelato. It’s creamy, luscious and will take you to your pleasure zone in seconds. It comes in Vanilla Bean, Chocolate and Pistachio. Also a Must is their Award-Winning Homemade Tiramisu that is so good it’s hard to put into words – Ecstasy perhaps? Stop by Scuola Vecchia and indulge in one of the Freshest Meals befitting the time honored tradition of Naples, Italy. Air fare not necessary! Why do pets continue to suffer, when so much more can be done?
T
his question actually triggered a response straight from our hearts and actually posed a question of my own that I am constantly asking myself… Why, with all the information that we provide through numerous articles, discussions on our Pet Health Café radio show plus other internet radio and TV shows as well as our blog, videos and social media, do we still see an ongoing stream of pet parents at our store and at pet events still concerned for their pets that are suffering? This concern was also so blatant to me when a long-time client of ours had taken her pet to the vet to check out a possible ear problem and was told that their practice of “engaging in an all-natural, raw food and herbal regimen was NOT good for their pet.” Sadly, over the 50 years that I’ve been working in the animal health field, I have seen many changes in the way we treat our pets. Gone are the days when our pets were free to be our best friends and left to develop “as is” minus the complicated procedures like obedience training, unnecessary vaccinations and medications for challenges that were and still not a crucial issue. Of course we see similar tendencies in human society today as well.
As an example, weekly I see pets that appear to be going blind that come into our store or through their owner’s photos posts on the web. Most of the time, these pets are not diseased, but rather exhibiting symptoms of an imbalance in their bodies. Why are their bodies that far out of balance that they are exhibiting so many problems? What are we doing to them to cause this? We are the parents that decide what veterinarian is to use and which type of services to follow. We are the ones making decisions on diet, meals, vaccinations, treatments, preventions, training and every aspect of our pets’ lives. All too often, we relinquish this responsibility through blind acceptance of suggestions and recommendations of others. While it is good to research and seek the advice of experts, are these experts truly educated in what we need? I hear cancer clients tell me how wonderful this oncologist or doctor is that saved my life when realistically it is our own bodies and minds that contribute greatly to the healing. Understand that disease is nothing more than a symptom of something out of the norm in our body. To heal we must produce healthy replacement cells. Most medication is designed to eliminate the bad cells
but does nothing to promote the growth of new healthy cells. What can we do to build new healthy cells? It is simple, provide a healthier immune system. We must eliminate the toxins that are creating these diseased, malfunctioning cells and provide the nutrients through good species appropriate clean living and proper nutrition. Health is actually that simple but we must take charge for ourselves and our pets. Instead of poisoning them every month with a synthetic flea and heartworm treatment, you can build a strong immune system that defends itself and only treat if and when there is a challenge. Before we jab with that vaccine, know the probability of contracting yet another challenge. And before you ask a professional about health, ask if they have been trained in medicine alone or health as well because they are radically different. By doing so, we hope to eliminate so much suffering in our beloved pets. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe. com radio show. Our 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients on a daily basis. We can be reached at Fiesta Pet Deli or www. ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card
Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.

He Said/She Said:
Summer Lovin’ By Robert V and Marie T
With summer upon us, the signs of the swelling of the summer dating pool are everywhere. Just look around and you can see what I am talking about. The gyms were full of neophytes trying to lose those pesky last 10 pounds before July. The stores are all full of summer fashions, which get smaller and leave less to the imagination every year. So as a service to you, our faithful reader (we have at least one, right?); here are our suggestions for summer dating preparation.
He Said
Get a tan, but don’t overdo it a la George Hamilton. A tan is slimming, forgiving and distracts people from zeroing in on our flaws. Don’t go all Trump on us with the orange raccoon look, either. Only pumpkins look good in orange skin. If you hear snickering and don’t 100 July 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
get the joke, you are the joke. Hit the gym, but do it safely. Diet and cardio will help you lose the weight. Lifting heavy objects improperly will put you in traction. I cringe when I see people in the gym that don’t have a clue. If you are going to lift, get a trainer. And guys, don’t just work out arms and chest. Women like (or at least I think they do) a balanced physique. Look at your wardrobe. Time to brighten it up and show off your bronze toned body. Face it, the sexist thing you can wear is confidence. New clothes = new attitude = confidence. Take a woman shopping with you so she can tell you what looks good, because you have no clue...
She Said
Ok - so everything He Said. Get tanned, toned, and trendy.
Summer here is almost year round - but our true summer season is HOT! So during this time of year I pack a few extras in my purse and car to keep me refreshed during our Dog Days of Summer. I couldn’t survive these months without a travel sized deodorant, my Evian facial spray, SUN SCREEN (apply, reapply, and then reapply again), a towel and a swimsuit. Oh! and an extra pair of underwear. TMI? Whatever. With a toned bronzed body, new threads, confidence, and a few extras in your bag (car) to keep you fresh throughout the day - you will be ready to network, date, or just hang with friends at a moment’s notice. And in case you’re wondering He and She have been dating regularly for the past month or so... *insert Cheshire Cat grin here*
