Boca-Delray Masonic Lodge #171 F&AM will hold its 3rd Annual Golf Tournament on September 17 at Boca Lago Country Club, 8665 Juego Way, Boca Raton. The tournament will feature 18 holes of golf, a BBQ lunch, awards and a silent auction, with proceeds benefitting Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA). Boca-Delray Lodge #171 has been doing charitable work in the area for over 100 years. Each year, the Lodge selects a deserving nonprofit organization as its Flagship Charity. This year’s organization is AVDA.

Since 1985, AVDA has been providing a safe haven for thousands of victims of domestic abuse. Adults and children are provided with 24-hour, 7 days a week emergency shelter, crisis counseling, food, clothing, individual and group counseling services. The BBQ lunch will feature Miami Dolphins cheerleaders, and the Silent Auction will feature sports memorabilia from the Dolphins, Florida Panthers, Miami Heat, Joe Gibb, 3 times Super Bowl winning Coach of the Washington Redskins, NFL Hall of Fame and owner of Joe Gibb Racing, NASCAR, a 3 nights, 4 day cruise from Celebrity Cruise and some interesting surprises, as well. The cost to participate is $150 per player, or $600 per foursome. Guests may attend the lunch and participate in the auction without playing in the golf tournament for $40 per person. Space is limited. Hole sponsorships are available for $150 for an individual or $700 including a foursome. Boy, 12, Meets Lifesaving Bone Marrow Donor For First Time

An emotional meeting of a 12-year old bone marrow recipient and his heroic donor marked by tears of joy took place during the Gift of Life Marrow Registry Campus Ambassador Program Symposium banquet on August 9, 2016 at the Boca Raton Marriott. Marrow recipient Airius Blaser was only three and half weeks old when he was diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD), a hereditary condition that causes a malfunction in the immune system, leaving the sufferer open to chronic infections from common bacteria and fungi. Blaser’s childhood was spent in and out of hospitals undergoing chemotherapy, multiple surgeries and the par-

tial loss of a lung. He wasn’t able to attend school outside the home. A worldwide search was initiated to try and find a compatible donor for the little boy who only wanted “to be a normal kid.” A match was eventually found in the Gift of Life registry. Donor Rachel Amar joined the registry in 2009. September 2014, Amar donated bone marrow through a short surgical procedure. After the transplant, Blaser began to recover, but still needed a boost for the transplant to really take hold. Amar donated again in December 2014. Blaser’s recovery began in earnest, and he is now able to ride a bicycle and go to school. The first year after the transplant, donors and recipients may not meet or learn each other’s identities. The Blaser family came to Florida from Illinois to meet Airius’ donor. Over 130 college students witnessed the dramatic introduction. These students will run donor recruitment drives across the United States during the 2016-17 academic year. “Around two years ago I got the call from Gift of Life telling me that I was a match. I gave bone marrow and later went through the stem cell procedure,” said Amar. “I didn’t think it was such a big deal at first, but after meeting him I realized, wow, this is such a huge thing! A little thing like that [a cheek swab] could save someone’s life.

Fest Poster Artist. Rebecca’s inspiration behind the 2017 Garlic Fest painting “Big Garlic” was inspired by a classic Allman Brothers album cover, Eat a Peach. Loveless, who is a true southern rock fan, wanted to evoke a feeling of joy with this particular piece of art. “Color can speak volumes to the eye, I just want it to look happy”, Loveless shared. The artist frequently uses mixed mediums to convey her vision - “Big Garlic” is no exception. Charcoal, acrylic, and watercolor were all used in its creation. Loveless wanted to incorporate lots of intricate details to be appreciated by a careful eye, including a band, balloons, and even a tiny picket fence. Small flowers, fluffy clouds, and lots of love fill the canvas that transports the viewer to an idealistic and fantastical land including subtle representation that the “Big Garlic” party was moving north.

The Garlic Fest draws international media attention including a featured spot on the Food Networks “Unwrapped”. It has been featured in over 40 national magazines, two network appearances and countless hours of local media coverage. Rebecca Loveless, 34, raised in South Florida, graduated from University of Florida 2004, cum laude with a degree in Visual Art Studies. She then moved to New York to pursue a career in gallery work but was sidetracked when she found tattooing. Loveless apprenticed in Queens, NY and eventually returned to Florida in 2010. Recently, Loveless received attention when she opened the first tattoo shop of Delray in June 2016. Tradition Tattoo, located at 165 Avenue L in Delray Beach, opened in 2012 in Boca Raton, then made history by relocating to Loveless’s home in Delray Beach. Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in September for $50 or less.

AVDA Announces Two New Board Members

Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc. (AVDA) has announced that Gail Veros and Barbara Rodriguez will serve on the organization’s Board of Directors. Gail Veros has been a member of AVDA’s advisory board since 2012 and currently serves as Chair. Veros is also the co-chair of AVDA’s Heart of a Woman Committee and most recently co-hosted AVDA’s Girls and Pearls event, along with FAU’s First Lady, Carolyn Kelly. In January 2016, Veros was honored at AVDA’s Heart

of a Woman Luncheon. An advocate since 2006, Veros has held a number of fundraising events, raising thousands of dollars for and greater awareness about AVDA’s programs and services. Barbara Rodriguez moved to the South Florida area a few years ago and immediately felt a connection with the organization. Since then, she has donated her time and talent to bring positive experiences to the families at AVDA. “To see the kids’ smiles is priceless. They include Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia and Martin Sensmeier up against evil industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) in the town of Rose Creek. Remember how storks allegedly delivered babies? In the CG-animated “Storks” they have gotten into the global package delivery internet service with Cornerstone.com. Junior, the top delivery stork,

is about to be promoted when he inadvertently activates the forbidden baby-making machine, producing an adorable girl. Junior and his human friend Tulip must deliver the girl before the boss gets wise. The “Queen of Katwe” is the true story of a girl who sells corn in the streets of rural Uganda whose life is changed when she is introduced to the game of Chess. With the support of her family and community she sets about to become a Chess master. Lupito Nyong’o stars as Harriet Mutesi. David Oyelowa is Robert Katende and Esther Tebandele is Sara Katende. Peculiar director Tim Burton is back with “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” Jacob discovers a secret refuge and its residents with unusual powers. He learns safety is an illusion and danger lurks in hidden enemies. Asa Butterfield is Jacob Portman, with Aiden Flowers as his 10-year-old self. Eva Green is Miss Peregrine, Samuel L. Jackson is Barron, Terence Stamp is Abraham Portman and Allison Janney is Dr. Golan. The story is based on the novel by Ransom Riggs. Let’s guess, “Masterminds” is a heist movie? Right you are Johnny. Zach Galifianakis stars as David Ghantt, a humdrum armored truck driver who gets talked into a scheme by his work crush, Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig). David enlists the help of harebrained criminal Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and his band of baddies. Miraculously David makes off with $17 million, but the money falls into the hands of double-crossers. David must elude an inept hit man (Jason Sudeckis) and turn the tables on his traitors. Jared Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite) directs. Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are also featured. “Deepwater Horizon” tells the terrible but true story of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that blew and caught fire April 20, 2010, killing 11, injuring 16 and causing the worst man-made environmental disaster the world has known. Manly men include Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich and Dylan O’Brien. Equally brave women are played by Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson. Peter Berg (“Lone Survivor”) directs. What made the dates even more significant was that Dave is going on hiatus after the current tour. This does not mean he is quitting music, but it does mean there will be no Dave Matthews 2017 summer tour. So fans will have to content themselves

with Matthews’ six studio albums, all of which topped the Billboard charts and have sold more than 30 million copies. Some fans came from far afield in their RVs and campers. South Florida Fairgrounds opened their lots at 2 p.m. each day to accommodate campers. No two Dave Matthews shows are alike, but the West Palm dates included most of the singer-songwriter-guitarist’s greatest hits such as “Crash Into Me,” “Don’t Drink

the Water,” “Cornbread” “Gravedigger” and “Ants Marching.” Born in South Africa 49 years ago, Matthews has spent most of his time in the USA where he currently lives in Seattle with his wife and three children. Matthews is also an actor with more than a half dozen movies to his credit. The Dave Matthews Band is scheduled to play Farm Aid 2016 September 17 in Bristow, Virginia. Matthews may be on hiatus next year and perhaps beyond, but it’s a safe bet that performing live in front of his adoring fans with lure him back onstage again. “You have no idea how grateful I am you are here tonight,” she told her fans. “It’s been seven years. You are just a huge puddle of love.” Stefani turns 47 on October 3rd. Though she has three sons with former Bush front man Gavin Rossdale, she still has a size 4 body and moves like a teenager. The formal title of the tour is “This is What the Truth Feels Like,” named after her 2016 album. Opening was friend and longtime collaborator, female rapper Eve, who was warmed up by an onstage DJ. The concert was a catalog of Stefani’s greatest hits, both as lead singer with No Doubt (1986-2004) and her solo career (2004 to date). Stefani had a crack onstage band with an especially strong lead guitarist and a keyboard man who also doubled on trumpet. The greatest audience response was for her greatest hits, such as her earliest, “Don’t Speak,” “Rich Girl,” “Hollaback” and Grammy Award winners “Hey Baby,” “Underneath it All” and “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” with Eve. Stefani was accompanied by four danc-

Injured in an Auto Accident? A Review of the Most Common Injuries and the Most Effective Treatments

There are several variables that contribute to the likelihood of being involved in an auto accident which include the speed of the vehicle, design of the vehicle, road design, skill of the operator, and whether the operator was impaired while driving.

The most common injuries sustained in an auto accident include strain/sprains of the neck (whiplash) or of the lower back, herniated discs, contusions (bruises), abrasions (scratches), lacerations (tearing of the skin), knee injuries, and rotator cuff injuries. The most ominous injuries include traumatic brain injuries, fractures, and internal organ disruption. The neck and the lower back are the most vulnerable and susceptible regions in the body for injury in an auto accident. In regards to the neck, whiplash is the most common occurrence. It is impossible to prevent the neck from snapping forward and backward during impact. This action creates micro-tears in the ligaments and tendons that hold the neck on top of the body. Subsequently, secondary to the forceof the impact the rubber like material between the vertebrae called the intervertebral disc can tear. The intervertebral disc is made up of an outer, resilient layer called the annulus fibrosus and an inner gelatin-like substance called the nucleus which is an irritant to nerves. Upon tearing, the nucleus can herniate out of the disc and irritate spinal nerves producing neck or lower back pain and pain into the arm or leg. The impact experienced in an automobile accident may also have more ominous results such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Physical and cognitive symptoms may result such as headache, nausea, dizziness, problems concentrating, difficulty with short term memory, spasticity, weakness in the limbs, and gait difficulties. The brain can shift forward and backward in in the skull in response to the violent forces put on the body producing a brain contusion which is termed a coup-contrecoup injury. Another

brain injury occurs when the brain shifts excessively in the skull shearing the neurons on the outer surface of the brain. A comprehensive examination must be conducted after the accident to detect the extent of neurological and orthopedic compromise. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment should be conducted immediately with a goal of reducing inflammation and restoring function. The current gold standard for soft tissue injuries such as strains and sprains and even intervertebral disc injuries is Class IV High Power Laser Therapy. Having hundreds of needles in your face sounds a little unappealing, right? Microneedling (rolling of a wheel covered in microscopic needles to create tiny skin punctures) is the latest and greatest dermatologic procedure for no downtime skin rejuvenation.

The hugely popular procedure in Europe and Asia has been booming in the USA as well. Actually, it’s not as threatening as it sounds. Let’s be wise about wisdom teeth

You can wait for a possible problem, or have them removed as a precaution.

Dentists are committed to helping their patients keep their teeth for a lifetime. At times, however, an extraction is deemed the best course of treatment. Some people are born without wisdom teeth, some people have enough space in their mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth, but some people end up getting their wisdom teeth removed as a precaution. Then there are the majority of people who wait until they’re in pain before seeing their dentist. There are several factors that dentists take into account before recommending treatment, and all depend on the severity of the case.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are often impacted, meaning that they’re not able to fully erupt through the gum line due to limited space. If you’ve had braces or Invisalign prior to your wisdom teeth coming in, this could ruin your straight teeth by pushing your bottom and top rows of teeth forward, causing overcrowding, crooked teeth and bite problems (and additional future work to re-straighten). Overcrowding can ruin a healthy smile because teeth that are too close together can become breeding grounds for plaque and bacteria. Crooked and crowded teeth are more difficult to clean when you brush and floss your teeth, allowing trapped food to remain in place. Built-up bacteria might not be removed until you have a professional cleaning, allowing plenty of time for tartar to form, increasing the chances of tooth decay and gum disease. Gum Disease or Tooth Decay Wisdom teeth are some of the most difficult teeth to clean, simply because of their location in the back of your mouth, making

it more complicated to reach with your toothbrush and floss. They’re also difficult to clean if they don’t actually erupt through the gum line, and their suspended state can lead to gingivitis, or the beginning phase of gum disease. Gingivitis is a swelling of the gums caused by the buildup of plaque around the gum line. Without proper care and maintenance, your gums will eventually recede, you may lose bone density in your jaw, and your teeth might need to be extracted. Gum disease can spread and lead to tooth decay and increase the potential need for extractions. Infected Wisdom Teeth If your wisdom teeth are impacted, they could irritate the surrounding gums and cause painful cysts. These cysts need to be treated by your dentist as they can hollow out your jaw and damage nerves. Due to the high possibility of infection, irritation and pain, many people choose to get their wisdom teeth removed before any of these problems arise.

Pain More mature wisdom teeth could grow near the nerve in the jaw and be difficult to remove, not to mention more painful. They can also cause headaches or migraines, in addition to jaw or facial pain, and make it harder for you to chew. Studies show that wisdom teeth will cause complications over your lifetime, and although they may not be causing symptoms that you feel or aware of, there could be issues going on under the surface that are problematic. Summer has come to a close and now it’s back to the school year grind. Summer is a time for loose schedules… aka missed workouts, family vacations…lots of extra calories and kids to entertain. No time to yourself!

Although fun and exciting, all these summer activities can reek havoc on the body and make getting back on track that much harder. There is no better time than now to make your fitness regime part of that “grind.” Here are a few tips to get back on track, feeling good and beat those summer blues. The first and most important component of getting back on track is to have a “fitness” plan and to set a goal for yourself. Setting a fitness plan could be as simple as saying you’re going to get to the gym 3x per week. Make sure it’s at a time that will not be interrupted and a time that will work for you. Next up is to set a small goal. Having a “specific” goal will allow you to focus on training and give you extra motivation to exercise. It’s a lot easier to make it to the finish line if you have an attainable goal in sight. Whatever this goal may be, write it down and put it somewhere where you will be reminded of it everyday. Committing your goal to paper and seeing the written words are more powerful than just having a thought or talking about it. Next order of business would be for you to get your eating in check! I highly recommend keeping a daily food log of exactly everything that you are consuming…the good the bad and the ugly! This will help you easily pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. Make sure to get in the proper mix of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and of course lots of veggies. Skip anything that is processed and stick to all homemade prepared meals (yes, with preparation and thought…you can do it!) The other nutrition component is water! Your body can not properly burn fat if it is

dehydrated. It’s such a simple thing many people don’t do. Aim for 1oz of water per pound of bodyweight. Drinking proper amounts of water will also help to keep you feeling full, flush out toxins and help debloat you faster than you may realize. So get out that gallon and start your chuggin! The last step to help you get back on track is to find an accountability partner. Surely you can find someone…a friend, the neighbor, your dog (just kidding!) who is looking to get in shape or even just live a healthier lifestyle. An accountability partner will help keep you on track and honest. I see greater fitness retention when friends pair up. Think about it….you’re much less likely to

skip your workout if someone is meeting you and it gives you someone to call when you’re ready to throw in the towel. If you follow these three principles it should help you get back on track in no time! My last piece of advice, don’t do the old…”I’ll start on Monday!” There is no better time to start than now! Come up with a plan, set a goal, clean up your eating, grab a friend and get moving! You’ll be glad you did. The reason is quite simple – Debbie Brookes is at the helm. Brookes is the silent genius in the crowd of creative artists that elevate seas shells to their rightful place. She knows how to take an ordinary object and make it glisten with varying sea shells that have a luminescent quality. But it’s not just the sea faring message that is so mesmerizing. It’s that Brookes has a knack – and the knowhow – to take a lamp or box and make it a study in contrast. Her mirrors are adorned with driftwood and sea glass (that she tumbles in a cement mixer) or embellished with chamber nautilus shells, jumbo sea shells and coral. For a lighter take on the subject of domestic furnishings Brookes creates Mother of Pearl handbags and lamps with Mother of Pearl and sea shell bases. There is no end to her creative juice flow. It’s just part and parcel of her years of varying creative endeavors. “In my career as a hairdresser, florist and artist I learned that it’s all about balance. Watching her work her magic is sheer genius. She knows what shells to use and how to balance the colors, shapes and style of each earth laden treasure. They hang from the rafters and are displayed on walls, shelves and tables that make up this bright luminescent retail store. One popular item – you won’t see anywhere else – is an urn to keep the ashes of your loved one. There are even companion urns for those who want to comingle in the afterlife. “I had a customer who had five Yorkies and she said they all used to play together and liked each other. So she bought a companion urn and put all their ashes together in one box.” Another customer bought a wooden urn with chamber nautilus and spiny murex shell with Giga clam shell top. It turns out the urn was for the ashes of her beloved horse. And the best part according, to Brookes, is that you can keep the urns in your house or condo as décor. “I had a customer who kept her husband’s ashes in the living room and she spoke

All you have to do is ask Brookes to create something special for you and it gets done pretty quickly. “I make a new item every day,” she says. There are also wooden medicine cabinets and shadow boxes that make perfect décor for a wall or a bathroom, but can also be used to cover an electrical panel. Beautiful mirrors are everywhere in all shapes and sizes adorned with colorful tiles shells, iridescent abalone shells and other eclectic pieces from nature’s ebb. Blessed with excellent weather and “only” 4 -6 foot seas’ on Saturday August 13th, the Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament was held for the 22nd time.

There were 38 boats entered in this year’s tournament with over 200 participants enjoying the 2 day event. The Captain’s Meeting was held at one of Delray’s great local spots The Hurricane Bar and Lounge (640 East Atlantic Avenue). The Captain’s Meeting was a huge success and Paul’s Hurricane Bar offered a great atmosphere for all to enjoy. With so many participating this year, food and drink was a must and generously donated from 3 of the best eateries in town. Henry and gang over at Delray’s Pizza Rustica filled us with deliciously large hot pizza-pies. While Pedro at Anthony’s Coal Fired offered up their famous chicken wings and giant meatballs. Adding to the goodies, Challo at Jimmy Johns Subs made a mound of their fresh sandwiches. Along with food, a tasty libation is a must and what better beverage then an ice-cold IPA brew cooked up at our famous local Saltwater Brewery out on West Atlantic Ave. During the 2 day event many raffles prizes and fishing goodies were won. Most donated by our fantastic supporters and sponsors. A few of the items included a custom Beach Cruiser donated from Albert at Richwagen’s Bike & Sport, a high-grade set of binoculars from Delray Camera, and our annual set of custom Adirondack chairs painted by a wonderful local artist, Tina Black. That’s not all, a 3 day/2 night stay at the best beach spot in town, Wright By the Sea, and an electric green 6 seater street legal Golf Cart rental for the weekend donated by Cindy and Family at Exhilaride Rentals. The tournament was started by Mark Gerretson as the original Delray Beach Jaycees Fishing Tournament to raise money for the Delray Beach Kids and Cops program, among other worthy causes. Mark ran the tournament for 11 years before he passed in 2005. At that time his friends and family made a promise to keep the tournament going and to continue to raise money for a variety of charities that support the kids and families directly in our Delray Beach Community. The tournament has raised well over $150,000 for charities over the years and has provided many children and families with help and hope during tough times. Federal and Local Tax Incentives Encourage Preservation and Restoration of Historic Homes By Rich Pollack

Claudia Willis’ 1996 purchase of a historic home in the Delray Beach’s Historic Marina District was meant to be.

“Fate definitely had a hand in it,” says Willis, who was already living in the district and bought the house as an investment property. The purchase of what she now refers to as one of her babies – “because I put my heart into it” – almost didn’t happen, she recalls. Willis had seen a sign go up in front of the 1939 home and rushed to make an offer only to learn that someone else had made an offer at the full asking price earlier that day. Willis asked the owner to let her know if that deal fell through and sure enough, 10 days later, the potential buyer withdrew her offer. “I really wanted that house,” Willis said of the home she bought at 42 Palm Square, just a half block south of East Atlantic Avenue. “It had been taken care of so well.” What made it so attractive to Willis was

that much of its original charm had been untouched. The home still has a working fireplace and Dade County pine floors in perfect condition. There are wooden ceilings throughout and walls made of cypress. “It was in perfect condition,” she said. Now 10 years later, the house continues to be well taken care of by Willis, who two years ago took advantage of two tax-related incentive programs – to make major renovations to the property. Those tax breaks would not have been possible had if the house had not been in the Marina District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 and remains the only district in Delray Beach with the federal designation. west of the Intracoastal Waterway, is also recognized as a historic district by the city of Delray Beach. Willis says she spent more than $200,000 renovating the historic house, knocking out a wall separating a small kitchen from a dining room which had earlier been a screenedin porch. The improvements opened up the space to make the area more functional and comfortable.Willis also made changes to the roof as part of the renovations. Through a program offered by the city of Delray Beach and Palm Beach County, called the Tax Abatement Program for Historic Properties, Willis is able to avoid paying property taxes on the value of improvements for 10 years. In other words, when the house is assessed, tax appraisers will wait a decade before recognizing the increased value due to improvements. The property tax benefit is also passed on to any new owner should the house be sold before the 10-year period expires. And, because the house is in a National Historic District and is income property, Willis was eligible for a $40,000 tax deduction through the Federal Tax Credit for Rehabilitating Historic Properties, which offers a 20

percent deduction for qualifying expenses. “Many people fear that there are too many restrictions on historic properties but I see only the benefits,” said Willis, who also owns a third historic home in the Marina Historic District. “It’s not as restrictive as people think.” One other incentive offered by the city of Delray Beach to owners of historic homes is the ability to obtain variances from city regulations. “City leaders want to save the property so they’re willing to grant variances to make it more livable,” says Willis, who is currently on a city-sponsored task force looking into the

possibility of adding additional incentives to encourage owners of older buildings to seek historic designations, thus helping to preserve them. That effort is supported by the Delray Beach Preservation Trust, which works to preserve and restore buildings of historic value within the city. Like other members of the Delray Beach Preservation Trust, Willis is a strong believer in preserving properties, which she believes are an integral part of Delray Beach’s character. “If and when I sell a historic home, I’m

looking for someone to adopt them, not buy them,” she said. It provides grants and assists owners in applying for grants for restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures.

The Florida Festival and Events Association held its annual convention and awards luncheon last month and Jarrod White, Events Manager of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC) walked away with its most prestigious statewide award.

White has been planning and executing events for Delray Beach for the last 5 years. The Florida Festivals and Events Association, Inc. (FFEA) represents 3,500 events throughout the state of Florida and recognizes those companies and individuals who excel in the field of events. While the DBMC as a whole walked out with 5 of the coveted awards, White was presented the last and most distinguished award of Emerging Leader. “This was a genuine shock. A big thanks goes to my DBMC team for nominating me and going along with some of my crazy ideas. Also to the city of Delray Beach for giving me the platform to be creative and allowing me to push boundaries,” exclaimed White. Jarrod’s dedication to entertaining the city with innovative and safe events can be witnessed all year long. Cornell Art Museum Opens Two New Exhibits September 16th

Opening Reception, Thursday, September 15th 7-9 p.m. “Fifteen Minutes” focuses on the idea of fame and the fact that Hollywood and celebrity are prevalent in contemporary art, as well as other facets of our contemporary culture. It includes artists who depict celebrities, celebrities who create art, and different ways that the culture of fame influences artists. Also included is work by the great Andy Warhol, who had an obsession with fame and who once stated that “everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes!” Participating artists include: Annie Kevans, Jemima Kirke, Jack Newman (based Boynton Beach), Nathan Ritterpusch, Daniel Stanford (based in Miami), Ken Tate, Andy Warhol, and Russell Young. “A Life in Portraits” brings together world-renowned, contemporary, American artists, spanning five decades, who have created portraits of art patron and collector, Joan Quinn. The exhibition includes over 50 portraits, from a collection of approximately 300, realized in all mediums by artists that Quinn has believed in and supported. The exhibition explores the relationship between artist and subject and is a rare but fascinating look into the creative process of some

Mitch Katz has a saying that it’s better to act than to talk. That is precisely the reason he ran for Delray Beach City Commissioner in 2015. And he won.

“I never thought I would run for office but there were things that needed to be done in Delray and I wanted to make them happen,” said the Chattanooga, Tennessee native who has lived in South Florida since he was five-years-old. Some of those things have come to fruition. Katz was insistent on more transparency in city government and currently all board meetings (that take place in the city chambers) are streamed on the Internet and recorded for future information. Katz is also proud of the city employee morale boosters put in place. “We have recognition programs such as the Employee of the Month. We also worked hard to negotiate an employee contract for Fire Department employees.” As a way to get to know constituents – and hear their concerns – Katz holds quarterly town hall meetings. He also hosts groups of residents at his “Coffee with Commissioner Katz” meetings where residents of Delray can express their concerns and ask questions about the city. “Sometimes people’s ideas have the potential to turn into policy,” he said. If there’s a theme that runs through this Delray resident’s life – it’s one of public service. He has been an Eagle Scout since he was 17-years-old and has volunteered with the Boy Scouts since he was a teen. Katz served as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster and various volunteer positions for the South Florida (and Gulfstream) Scout Councils that foster leadership. Katz also enjoys speaking to children to boost their morale. Helping others is a lifetime passion that is near and dear to his heart. “I was raised by a single mother (Fran) and older sister (Sindee) and had a lot of mentors growing up. My Big Brother and Scout leaders were mentors to me as well.” If you look at the trajectory of Katz’s life, it seems

to follow a predictable path. One that is strewn with supporting young people and helping them find their way in the world. It is something that Katz navigated with the help of others and he seems to take pride in paying it forward. He was a chair of the Education Board of Delray Beach for two years, is on the PTA of Banyan Creek Elementary School and is an assistant Scout Master in Delray. Katz is also president of his homeowners association in Bexley Park. Being a people person is one thing that helped Katz start off on the right foot in life. At the age of 15 he sold the Miami Herald after school and also worked in Fort Lauderdale at a department store (called Jason’s) selling menswear. He also volunteered in numerous political campaigns and was a volunteer for Michael Dukakis in Sunrise, Florida. Katz worked closely with Dukakis’s daughter Andrea and found that his passion was identical to those he supported. “I like supporting people who have a true desire to help others. I enjoy helping people.” That seems to be one reason that Chuck Halberg of Stuart & Shelby has a fondness for this local family man. “Mitch is someone not afraid to go against the odds, even when he is told he can’t succeed. He is also passionate about things he feels strongly about. I also really admire his family values.” Katz has been married to Heather for 13 years and has two children, an 11-year-old son Hayden and nine-year-old daughter Shayna. They enjoy attending local Delray events together such as the July 4th celebration, First Night on New Years’ Eve and the Delray Affair. Another thing that Katz feels strongly about is helping teachers get their graduate degrees online. He accomplishes this by working with non-profit

universities across the country as Manager of Education Programs for The Learning House. Katz has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and a Master’s Degree in Leadership from the Ken Blanchard College of Business at Grand Canyon University. He has worked in various admissions management positions in higher education and is dedicated to helping adults achieve

their lifelong education goals. In his spare time Katz has found a new vocation (and avocation) with Dash Travel in downtown Delray Beach. It is there that Katz works his magic with people by helping arrange trips to fulfill their lofty goal (or bucket list) of seeing the world. For this local commissioner seeing the world means keeping Delray Beach in good stead with its residents – and keeping everyone happy.

So far he seems to be on the right track. “Commissioner Katz is fair and thoughtful and brings a valued perspective to the process. As a longtime resident he took it upon himself a few years ago to become actively involved in the community by joining the City Commission. We look forward to working with Commissioner Katz in the future and appreciate his efforts on behalf of the community,” said Marc Yavinsky, Executive Vice President of Menin Development, Inc.

When you go to Il Contadino it’s like going to your family’s Italian country house. It’s relaxed, the food is homemade and there’s little pretense in this intimate culinary experience.

That’s the way Michael Menna likes it. He enjoys making guests happy and listens to their heartiest desires - and makes them come true. Of course, this aim to please is mostly geared toward your palate and your plate. But, Menna has been known to chat with those who want to nurse a glass of wine and spend time in the serenity of his Pineapple Grove restaurant. For those who want a special dish, or a family favorite recipe, Menna is ready to whip it up for you. All you have to do is ask (and perhaps give him a little notice). That’s why he only has a few menus on hand. The rest of his culinary offerings are in his head and vary depending on the freshness of the local food available. Like an artist Menna can take different ingredients 88

and make them harmonious and meaningful. Take the Stuffed Mussels for example. As someone who shuns mussels quite often I was delightfully surprised by the presentation and the exquisite taste of the Stuffed Mussels at Il Contadino. Prepared with Italian sausage, fresh mozzarella cheese, bread crumbs, extra virgin Olive Oil and Garlic they were superb. One of Menna’s signature dishes are his homemade meatballs. You can get one with a short rib in the center or order this savory dish as an entrée. The meatballs are tasty without overbearing spices that camouflage the inherent flavor of the meat. If you’re a lover of Osso Buco, you’re in for a treat. This veal dish is braised in a luscious vegetable tomato sauce over homemade spinach fettuccini. It’s also no flash in the pan – it takes Menna all day to prepare this hearty dish. If you like short ribs Menna will make them for you in a tasty homemade vegetable tomato sauce as well. The short ribs are so tender they fall off the bone, yet are so delicious your fork will be there to meet them. Though presentation is of paramount importance to this 40-year foodie veteran, his primary goal is to create comfort food that makes guests feel good. “I like to create scrumptious meals for people who come to my restaurant. I also take pride in the fact veal chops caprese, made with house made mozzarella, fresh basil and local tomatoes

that I offer my customers their favorite dishes cooked to perfection.” He sure does. His customers can attest to his generosity of spirit and perfection in the kitchen. “My husband and I went to Il Contadino for dinner. We had the fresh Mahi Special with broccoli and roasted potatoes and the Insalate de Contadino salad. We also enjoyed the delicious homemade key lime pie. Everything was prepared to perfection and Michael (the owner) served us personally. The restaurant’s atmosphere makes you feel like you are at an intimate restaurant in the heart of Italy. We highly recommend Il Contadino,” said Julie of Boca Raton. Menna has a gift when it comes to preparing terrific homemade meals. As a child his parents worked a lot and often their son would gather food he found in the refrigerator and whip up a special dish. “My parents were hairdressers and they rarely cooked so I would take whatever was in the house and prepare a gourmet meal.” He still has that savvy ability. “As a resident of Delray who eats out a lot I love Il Contadino. The food is excellent and Michael takes great care of us. It’s not noisy, busy or as pretentious as other Delray Restaurants, but it’s my favorite. The service is good, the food is excellent and the ambience is cozy and friendly,” said Gordon. That’s one of the perks of dining at this cozy restaurant in Pineapple Grove. You never know what Menna will cook up. He has been known to create a homemade Bolognese Sauce with fresh ground beef bathed in his grandmother’s secret tomato sauce with pasta. One of his newest creations is a whole Branzino with peppers, Kalamata olives and onions. He’s also serving a rib veal dish with breading, homemade mozzarella cheese and locally grown tomatoes with basil. Another new dish is the Pasta Carbonara. Made with bacon and onions in a

cream sauce this dish will really wow you. When it comes to wines Menna has the globe covered. “I have 1000 different wines from all over the world. I even have a vintage wine from the 20’s. We cater parties and welcome groups (or families) celebrating special occasions – we’ll cook your favorite meal or help you plan the menu.” Il Contadino also serves lunch with dishes such as Italian antipasti, soups, wraps, salads, veal and pasta. If you don’t see what you want on the menu chances are Michael will make it for you. “All of the food I make comes from my heart. Each dish is homemade and I can make any type of food you want, from any country,” said Michael, whose children often help their dad in the kitchen. Butter Boiled Corn

Ingredients: 6-8 ears of corn, shucked 1 stick of butter 1 Cup of milk Salt to taste - optional Directions: Fill a large pot about halfway with water. Bring water to a boil. Add milk and butter. Add corn and reduce heat. Simmer corn for 6 to 8 minutes Remove corn from cooking liquid and its ready to serve. 90

Bake until golden and set, about 30 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 head cauliflower 1½ cups plain Greek yogurt 1 lime, zested and juiced 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon curry powder 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon black pepper Directions: Preheat the oven to 400° and lightly grease a small baking sheet with vegetable oil. Set aside. Trim the base of the cauliflower to remove any green leaves and the woody stem. In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt with the lime zest and juice, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, curry powder, salt and pepper. Dunk the cauliflower into the bowl and use a brush or your hands to smear the marinade evenly over its surface. (Excess marinade can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days and used with meat, fish or other veggies.) Place the cauliflower on the prepared baking sheet and roast until the surface is dry and lightly browned, 30 to 40 minutes. The marinade will make a crust on the surface of the cauliflower. Let the cauliflower cool for 10 minutes before cutting it into.

Mix flour, water, garlic powder, salt and pepper together in a bowl with a whisk until batter is smooth and a bit runny. Add cauliflower to batter and mix until cauliflower is coated. spread onto baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned, 20-25 minutes. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Remove saucepan from heat and stir in hot sauce and honey into butter until smooth. Brush hot sauce mixture over each piece of cauliflower until all mixture is used. Bake until cauliflower is browned, about 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cauliflower cool 10-15 minutes.

Buffalo Cauliflower Add in cooked chicken, shrimp, or steamed broccoli for a complete meal!

Ingredients: Olive Oil cooking spray 3/4 cup baking flour 1 cup water 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste 2 heads of cauliflower, cut into bite size pieces 2 table spoons butter 1/2 cup Franks Red Hot Buffalo Sauce 1 teaspoon honey Directions: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet with cooking spray.

Ingredients: 1 cup of fresh blueberries 1/3 cup Gin 1 pint vanilla ice cream 4 waffle bowls Mint for garnish Directions: In a small saucepan combine blueberries and Gin. Simmer, stirring frequently until berries burst and mixture begins to thicken - about 5-8 minutes; let cool. Divide one pint of ice cream among 4 bowls evenly and top with sauce. Garnish with mint.

Ingredients: 1 lb angel hair spaghetti 4 large garlic cloves, minced 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon dried hot red pepper flakes 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil Finely grated zest from 2 lemons 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Directions: Cook pasta in a 6-quart pot of boiling salted water until al dente. Reserve 1 cup cooking water and drain pasta in a colander. While pasta is boiling, cook garlic and red pepper flakes (to taste) in oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet over moderate heat, stirring, until garlic is golden, about 5 minutes. Stir in zest, then juice, salt, pepper, and 1/2 cup reserved cooking water and bring to a simmer. Toss pasta in sauce with parsley. A Natural Life in Every Way... How Do We Achieve?

n today’s crazy world, how do we achieve a more natural lifestyle for our pets, our families and ourselves? It seems we are facing the whole alphabet of challenges from Anxiety to Zika. Every day we are confronted with new health challenges from diseases, toxins, environment, pharmaceuticals, drugs or a pollution challenge with no solutions in plain sight. So what are we to do? Many of these challenges are beyond our immediate control. The government is nonresponsive to the concerns of the general population. Large corporations are exempt from the problems that they create. Chemotherapy for instance, was recently reported with statistics from the FDA stating it is only 3% effective in long term effectiveness in treating cancers. You will notice I said “treating”, not CURING. Now, let’s look at this in another light. That is a 97% FAILURE rate and a very costly one at that! Most of the health challenges our pets and ourselves face are because of the toxins and deficiencies provided by our society. These components are all around us including the air we breathe, water, foods, prescription drugs and other medications. What are we to do?

The key to leading a healthier, more natural life is knowledge. If you are reading this, you are on the right path. It starts with several basic paths that are right in front of our eyes. For natural health we need three things, clean air, clean water and clean nutritious food. It is difficult to control our air with all the chemtrails, pesticides, pollutants and toxins in the air today but not impossible. Air purification, from expensive ozone generators to inexpensive sea salt absorbers will help but it’s up to you to NOT contribute more of these toxins to the environment. The same is true with our water. How many pollutants were produced to make those toxic plastic water bottles you purchase to consume water? Is the water quality really better from the bottle than from the tap? Is fluoride more dangerous than BPA? There is a plethora of water conditioning products from mineral additives and filters to complete water modifying systems to reduce our risk. The area we have the most control over is our food. The cleaner, more nutritious and naturally raised foods are, the stronger our immune systems will be to fight, repair and cure the body. Species ap-

propriate diets of clean, nutritious foods for ourselves and our pets are the single most important items to keep us healthy. The diet needs to be as local, fresh chemically and processing free as possible. The diet must be widely varied with macronutrients which are the major food groups as well as micro-nutrients such as herbs, spices and botanicals. By balancing the diets in this manner, the body is able to grow, detoxify and regenerate health at a cellular level making most of the toxic drugs unnecessary. It means the body will heal itself from within and will be able withstand the air and water assaults better. For the sources of these toxins, vote with your dollars. Source your food, healthcare, prevention and all necessities to be local and smart. Find the real experts that can answer your questions with knowledge and wisdom, and then share what you’ve learned. Face it - aching knees, embarrassing trips down the Depends aisle in the grocery store and being unable to read a restaurant menu without a magnifying glass are no fun. Getting older can certainly be an adventure in itself. But, rather than dwell on the downside, how about looking at some of the things that make life better now than it was when you were young?

Here are five advantages of getting older that you may not have thought of before:

You Make Lots of New Friends Just think – you never would have met that guy who makes birdhouses if you had not been sitting with him in the doctor’s office waiting room for an hour. You would never have heard that the lab technician who takes your blood every month has a daughter who is getting her third divorce. And, don’t forget all of the people at the senior citizen center and church suppers. Your horizons have really expanded since you got older. You’re Still a Baby No matter how old you are, there is always someone who, upon learning your age, will say, “Oh, you’re still a baby.” Seek those people out.

You Have Lots of Ready-Made Excuses Everyone expects you to have trouble remembering things and to have lost your hearing - whether you have or not. Selective hearing is probably THE greatest benefit of aging. Maybe you can still hear perfectly, but the older you get, the more you can pretend not to have heard something. Didn’t take the garbage out? Sorry, didn’t hear you ask. Didn’t fix the garage door? Oops, couldn’t hear you. Memory loss is another great excuse. If it’s too late to pretend you didn’t hear something, you can simply say that you forgot. It’s expected that someone of your advanced years will have trouble remem-

Enjoy yourself. What do you have to lose? Feel like flirting with the pool guy? Go ahead. People will smile, roll their eyes, shake their heads and secretly wish you would act your age. Five Simple Yoga Stretches for a Public Toilet Stall By Antonia Anderson

Date from hell? Stressful business meeting? Lunch with the in-laws? From these and other miseries, the public restroom is the traditional refuge. Why not put your time inside the stall to good use? A spot of yoga relaxes and invigorates, preparing you for the daunting world outside.

Here are five simple yoga stretches you can do in a public toilet stall of any shape or size. Just don’t forget to lock the door.

1. Forward Bend While seated on the toilet, straighten your back and take a deep inhale. Exhale, hinge at the waist and lower your torso onto your thighs. The head comes to rest on the knees and the arms hang down loosely.

2. Neck Rolls Still seated, place hands on thighs and let your head hang with chin tucked. Shoulders are relaxed. Slowly roll the head all the way to the left, then to the right. Remember

3. Side Twist Sit up straight and turn your torso as far to the left as possible without moving your legs. Grasp the back of the toilet tank to increase the stretch (unless hygiene conditions are unfavorable). Take a few deep breaths, than turn to the right and repeat.

4. Upward Stretch This one is done standing. With an inhale, stretch your arms over your head and clasp your hands together. Turn your clasped hands so the palms face the ceiling, and look

up. Hold for a few breaths and release.

5. The Scream Stretch your mouth open as wide as possible. Inhale slowly, and then exhale fast and forcefully. Imagine all tension, anxiety, or boredom being expelled from your lungs. Do this three times…or until you feel ready to face whatever drove you into the toilet stall in the first place. Now you can exit the public toilet feeling refreshed and rejuvenated by these simple yoga stretches. And if that tedious meeting or nerve-racking lunch drags on for another two hours…well, nobody can fault you for taking another bathroom break.
