Boy, 12, Meets Lifesaving Bone Marrow Donor For First Time
An emotional meeting of a 12-year old bone marrow recipient and his heroic donor marked by tears of joy took place during the Gift of Life Marrow Registry Campus Ambassador Program Symposium banquet on August 9, 2016 at the Boca Raton Marriott. Marrow recipient Airius Blaser was only three and half weeks old when he was diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD), a hereditary condition that causes a malfunction in the immune system, leaving the sufferer open to chronic infections from common bacteria and fungi. Blaser’s childhood was spent in and out of hospitals undergoing chemotherapy, multiple surgeries and the par-

tial loss of a lung. He wasn’t able to attend school outside the home. A worldwide search was initiated to try and find a compatible donor for the little boy who only wanted “to be a normal kid.” A match was eventually found in the Gift of Life registry. Donor Rachel Amar joined the registry in 2009. September 2014, Amar donated bone marrow through a short surgical procedure. After the transplant, Blaser began to recover, but still needed a boost for the transplant to really take hold. Amar donated again in December 2014. Blaser’s recovery began in earnest, and he is now able to ride a bicycle and go to school. The first year after the transplant, donors and recipients may not meet or learn each other’s identities. The Blaser family came to Florida from Illinois to meet Airius’ donor. Over 130 college students witnessed the dramatic introduction. These students will run donor recruitment drives across the United States during the 2016-17 academic year. “Around two years ago I got the call from Gift of Life telling me that I was a match. I gave bone marrow and later went through the stem cell procedure,” said Amar. “I didn’t think it was such a big deal at first, but after meeting him I realized, wow, this is such a huge thing! A little thing like that [a cheek swab] could save someone’s life.
I saved a little boy’s life.” To learn more about Gift of Life Marrow Registry, visit www.giftoflife.org.

Fest Poster Artist. Rebecca’s inspiration behind the 2017 Garlic Fest painting “Big Garlic” was inspired by a classic Allman Brothers album cover, Eat a Peach. Loveless, who is a true southern rock fan, wanted to evoke a feeling of joy with this particular piece of art. “Color can speak volumes to the eye, I just want it to look happy”, Loveless shared. The artist frequently uses mixed mediums to convey her vision - “Big Garlic” is no exception. Charcoal, acrylic, and watercolor were all used in its creation. Loveless wanted to incorporate lots of intricate details to be appreciated by a careful eye, including a band, balloons, and even a tiny picket fence. Small flowers, fluffy clouds, and lots of love fill the canvas that transports the viewer to an idealistic and fantastical land including subtle representation that the “Big Garlic” party was moving north.
The Garlic Fest draws international media attention including a featured spot on the Food Networks “Unwrapped”. It has been featured in over 40 national magazines, two network appearances and countless hours of local media coverage. So Garlic Heads get ready to regale, rejoice, refresh and renew at the 18th Annual Garlic Fest on Feb. 10 - 12, 2017. For more information, visit our website at www.sflgarlicfest.com and don’t miss the “Best Stinking Party in South Florida”.

Rebecca Loveless, 34, raised in South Florida, graduated from University of Florida 2004, cum laude with a degree in Visual Art Studies. She then moved to New York to pursue a career in gallery work but was sidetracked when she found tattooing. Loveless apprenticed in Queens, NY and eventually returned to Florida in 2010. Recently, Loveless received attention when she opened the first tattoo shop of Delray in June 2016. Tradition Tattoo, located at 165 Avenue L in Delray Beach, opened in 2012 in Boca Raton, then made history by relocating to Loveless’s home in Delray Beach. Loveless has been featured in many local art shows and continues to stay active in her community.

I
’m originally from New York and I relocated to Delray Beach more than thirteen years ago. Continuing to follow my passion for an already successful profession as a New York Realtor, I immediately acquired my Florida Real Estate license. What originally began as part time summer work, during my college years, for the family real estate business, turned into a profitable choice after I retired from a lucrative career of laddering High Net Worth Municipal Bond Portfolios on Wall Street. Choosing to work with Posh Properties was an obvious and an easy decision for me. Aside from the qualities of strength, vision, and success ... the agents at Posh Properties inspire me every day to push the envelope in becoming an even more cutting-edged Realtor who exceeds my documented proven sales. The benefit of having my office in the heart of Delray Beach has positioned me in the center of all that I love ... waterfront, midrise, country club, or single family. Whatever you are considering, let’s talk. I would love to hear from you.

I
was born in Brooklyn, NY - later moved to South Florida, and grew up in Delray. After the diagnosis of my mother with CLL and my Uncle with ALS, I began partnering with organizations to create fundraising events, raise awareness, and help others. That quickly turned into a career of Event Planning, leading my path to working TV, Film, and Events. I still wanted to create something special while giving back, so myself and someone dear to me decided to open our own company this past December. I then also discovered Silverball Museum. I was able to continue my dream, while helping the owners of Silverball create visions of making their dream a reality. Silverball started as an act of love from the Owner to his daughter- that was the ultimate selling point to me when I took this job, something I related to. I am currently the Events Director and Manager here at Silverball where I am fortunate to connect with many people, organizations, and the Community of Delray Beach. Silverball has enabled me to pursue my own growing company, as well as be a part of a family at Silverball that has the same ideals as my own. I truly believe everything happens for a reason. delray under $50 By Darien Arden

“I
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in September for $50 or less.
’m on a whisky diet. I’ve lost three days already,” said Tommy Cooper, British pop comedian. I, too, fancy a good bourbon (and time traveling). My future library room will be complete with leather sofas, velvet slippers and a vat of this fiery-yet-smooth, honey-colored nectar, and I will never leave. Luckily for us, September is Bourbon Heritage Month (and my birthday month, cheers to me) and we have a local watering hole that is ready to fill our gullet and put hair on our chest. Park Tavern’s philosophy of “whiskey for your mouth, not for our shelves” encourages broad tasting options for their favorite spirit: whiskey. They have more whiskeys than you can shake a drunken stick at – 37 to be exact – and are available in 1 oz. and 2 oz. pours, or as an old fashioned (with sugar, bitters and twist of citrus). Treat your palate to Basil Hayden’s, 80 proof, for $6 for 1 oz. or $12 for 2 oz., or maybe the Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2015 (don’t mind if I do), 100 proof, for $9/$18. If you want to get fancy, wet your whistle with the George T. Stagg Antique 2015, 138.2 proof, for $15/ $30, or the Four Roses Limited 2015, 108.5 proof, for $20/ $40. Whatever your big bourbon pleasure, you should be able to deliciously indulge yourself at this one stop shop. Park Tavern is located at 32 S.E. Second Ave. Visit www.parktavern.com or call (561) 265-5093 for a complete list of whiskeys.

ter time to go mad. If you are looking for a shroomin’ good time, fall down the rabbit hole to our local hangout spot, Mellow Mushroom. Their Magic Mushroom Soup is one of my favorites and includes wine and herb broth, creamy Italian MontAmore cheese and topped with grilled shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms and fresh chives for $3.99. Let’s move right along to the Righteous Portobello Reuben with grilled Portobello mushrooms, Swiss cheese, Bavarian-style sauerkraut with Thousand Island dressing on a crunchy rye hoagie roll for $9.49. If you prefer a pizza pie, get ready for the Holy Shiitake Pie with and olive oil and garlic base, shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella and MontAmore cheeses, drizzled with garlic aioli and black truffle oil and garnished with fresh chives and shaved parmesan for $24.99 for the large. No matter the culinary ride, Mellow is ready to take you on the trip. And, while we’re here, it’d be rude not to indulge in their mountain of draft and bottled beers. Head in on a Monday
for half-priced drafts and Tuesday for halfpriced bottles. Sounds good to me. Mellow Mushroom is located at 25 S.E. Sixth Ave. Visit www.mellowmushroom.com or call (561) 330-3040 for their detailed menu and nightly specials.

ice, rice, baby. September is National Rice Month and is a perfect time to indulge in rice in its best form: wrapped around raw fish. Lemongrass Asian Bistro is one of my favorite local sushi spots and there is no better day when you can take lunch out of the office and treat yourself to a rollin’ good time. Take a chopstick stab at the sushi lunch with five pieces of sushi and four pieces of a California roll for only $9.95, or the double rolls special with your choice of California, spicy tuna, tuna, vegetable, avocado, salmon or cucumber rolls for only $9.95. If you are heading in for dinner, they’ve got more specialty rolls than you can count. cannot live without Brussels sprouts, avocado, tomatoes, asparagus, raspberries, or, pretty much all fruits and vegetables. They’re delicious and nutritious, and part of a recipe for life-long health. September is National Fruit and Veggies Month and even though the GreenMarket is closed this month, we still have Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market for our fresh shopping experience. Bedner’s mission is to provide a variety of locally-grown produce that is tasty, yet affordable, and they really hit the mark. This family owned and operated farm focuses on sustainable farming and this means not only healthy farming practices, but also the most delicious food that is picked and sold at the peak of ripeness. In addition to fresh veggies and fruit, they also have wine, packaged goods, eggs, meat, cheese, bread and more, so you’re all set for a fabulously healthy picnic lunch or dinner party. Mark your calendar for their u-pick season, which includes strawberries, red and green peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and sunflowers, and their holiday events later this year. They make it so easy to get your daily dose of fruits and vegetables that you have no reason to get yourself in super healthy shape. Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market is located at 381 N.E. Third Ave. Visit www.bedners.com or call (561) 501-5177 for more information.
T
hree’s a crowd, so move it or lose it. September is Oneon-One Month and is the perfect time to get steamy in steamy Florida. You have a million reasons to be busy, so allow yourself just one reason to do nothing and enjoy the day. Grab your birthday – oops, I mean bathing – suit and head to the beach for a relaxing day with your number one. Treat yourselves to a beach set-up with two lounges and an umbrella or cabana for $40 from Oceanside Beach Service. You can meet the attendants at the pavilion entrance off of Atlantic Avenue and the A1A and forget about doing anything for yourselves for the rest of your beach experience. We are so fortunate to have one of the best beaches in Florida so it’s always a good time to act like a tourist and spend the day at the beach (minus the lobster-like burn). If you want a snack, head to Sandbar and order some food and libations, and play cornhole or just enjoy the DJ. Date days are the best days and lucky for us we don’t have to go too far. Visit www.beachservice.com or call (561) 840-3373 for more information.

AVDA Announces Two New Board Members
Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc. (AVDA) has announced that Gail Veros and Barbara Rodriguez will serve on the organization’s Board of Directors. Gail Veros has been a member of AVDA’s advisory board since 2012 and currently serves as Chair. Veros is also the co-chair of AVDA’s Heart of a Woman Committee and most recently co-hosted AVDA’s Girls and Pearls event, along with FAU’s First Lady, Carolyn Kelly. In January 2016, Veros was honored at AVDA’s Heart
of a Woman Luncheon. An advocate since 2006, Veros has held a number of fundraising events, raising thousands of dollars for and greater awareness about AVDA’s programs and services. Barbara Rodriguez moved to the South Florida area a few years ago and immediately felt a connection with the organization. Since then, she has donated her time and talent to bring positive experiences to the families at AVDA. “To see the kids’ smiles is priceless. It is our goal, through our interactions with the families, to bring them new hope and happiness,” said Rodriguez. “We treat them with respect, love and genuine care to inspire them to be strong, independent and empowered to follow their dreams.” AVDA’s growth reflects the dedication of the organization to empower victims of domestic abuse to enable them to live their lives independently and free of fear. September 2 “Morgan” is a horror-thriller by director Luke Scott and writer Seth Owens. Kate Mara stars as Lee Weathers, a corporate analyst who is sent to a remote, top-secret location to investigate a terrible accident involving a seemingly normal human named Morgan (Anya Taylor-Joy). Maybe she’s not so normal. The cast includes Rose Leslie, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Giamatti, Michelle Yeoh and Toby Jones. September 9 “Before I Wake” is a horror-supernatural thriller starring Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane as Jessie and Mark, a married couple who take in a sweet and loving 8-year-old boy, Cody. The problem is, Cody is terrified of falling asleep. When Jessie and Mark explore why, Cody’s nightmares begin invading their life. Annabeth Gish, Dash Mihok and Kyla Deaver provide support. Mike Flanagan (“Oculus”) wrote and directs. “When the Bough Breaks” tells the tale of John and Laura Taylor (Morris Chesnutt and Regina Hall), a young professional couple that desperately wants a baby. After failing to get Laura pregnant, they hire Anna, a perfect woman (Jaz Sinclair) to be a surrogate mother. Anna
Kate Bosworth “before I wake”
gets pregnant, but she develops a dangerous and psychotic fixation on John Taylor. Additional cast is Theo Rossi, Romany Malco and Michael K. Williams. Jon Cassar (“Forsaken”) directs. September 16 Tom Hanks is “Sully,” the steely veteran pilot who saved the lives of 155 passengers when his US Airways flight 1549 became disabled after takeoff from La Guardia when it struck a flock of Canadian Geese. With no power, Sully calmly glided the plane to a safe landing in the Hudson River. Clint Eastwood directs. Laura Linney plays Sully’s wife Lorraine and others are Anna Gunn, Aaron Eckhart, Autumn Roeser and Jerry Ferara. “Snowden” tells the true story of Edward Snowden, a hacker who exposed illegal surveillance by the National Securities Agency, and became one of the wanted men in the world in the process. Oliver Stone (“Wall Street”) directs Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, with Timothy Olyphant as a sympathetic CIA agent. Others are Shalene Woodley, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood and Melissa Leo. Renee Zellweger is back as Helen Fielding’s heroine in “Bridget Jones’s Baby.” Also back is Colin Firth as dashing Patrick Darcy, Jim Broadbent as Bridget’s dad and Sharon Maguire, who directed the 2001 original. Out is Hugh Grant. In is Patrick Dempsey as Jack, an American who charms Bridget, who finds herself fortysomething and single again. Is nothing sacred? “The Magnificent Seven” is a remake of the 1960 movie starring Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. That in turn was a remake of the Akira Kurosawa 1954 Japanese masterpiece “The Seven Samurai.” Let see how director Antoine Fuqua (“Southpaw”) and his cast of young bucks fare. They include Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia and Martin Sensmeier up against evil industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) in the town of Rose Creek. Remember how storks allegedly delivered babies? In the CG-animated “Storks” they have gotten into the global package delivery internet service with Cornerstone.com. Junior, the top delivery stork,
is about to be promoted when he inadvertently activates the forbidden baby-making machine, producing an adorable girl. Junior and his human friend Tulip must deliver the girl before the boss gets wise. The “Queen of Katwe” is the true story of a girl who sells corn in the streets of rural Uganda whose life is changed when she is introduced to the game of Chess. With the support of her family and community she sets about to become a Chess master. Lupito Nyong’o stars as Harriet Mutesi. David Oyelowa is Robert Katende and Esther Tebandele is Sara Katende. Mira Nair (“Amelia”) directs. We’ve known a few of these. Peculiar director Tim Burton is back with “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” Jacob discovers a secret refuge and its residents with unusual powers. He learns safety is an illusion and danger lurks in hidden enemies. Asa Butterfield is Jacob Portman, with Aiden Flowers as his 10-year-old self. Eva Green is Miss Peregrine, Samuel L. Jackson is Barron, Terence Stamp is Abraham Portman and Allison Janney is Dr. Golan. The story is based on the novel by Ransom Riggs. Let’s guess, “Masterminds” is a heist movie? Right you are Johnny. Zach Galifianakis stars as David Ghantt, a humdrum armored truck driver who gets talked into a scheme by his work crush, Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig). David enlists the help of harebrained criminal Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and his band of baddies. Miraculously David makes off with $17 million, but the money falls into the hands of double-crossers. David must elude an inept hit man (Jason Sudeckis) and turn the tables on his traitors. Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are also featured. “Deepwater Horizon” tells the terrible but true story of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that blew and caught fire April 20, 2010, killing 11, injuring 16 and causing the worst man-made environmental disaster the world has known. Manly men include Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich and Dylan O’Brien. Equally brave women are played by Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson. Peter Berg (“Lone Survivor”) directs. Revenge in a Cold River: A William Monk Novel
by Anne Perry Released September 6, 2016 Master of mystery and historical intrigue Anne Perry once again transports readers to the banks of the Thames in Victorian London for her thrilling new William Monk novel. In “Revenge in a Cold River,” Monk faces his darkest hour ever as he spars with a quarry hellbent on vengeance. When Commander Monk of the Thames River Police is called to investigate the drowning of an escaped prisoner, he’s forced to contend with customs officer McNab, who clearly bears a bitter grudge against him. But the reason is a mystery in itself. Monk’s memory loss—a secret he guards closely—leaves him vulnerable to repercussions from his missing past, especially his exploits overseas in the tumultuous Gold Rush days of San Francisco. And now McNab, as icy and unfathomable as the steel-gray Thames itself, appears intent on using whatever damning facts he can find to his advantage to ruin Monk’s future as an officer of the law. As Monk explores the possibility of a conspiracy, McNab’s game of cat and mouse escalates, with veiled threats and cryptic insinuations. Snared in an unforeseen trap, a desperate Monk must turn to his wife, Hester, and friend and attorney Oliver Rathbone for help, as his life literally hangs in the balance.

Unfortunately, the village she lives in is about to get a little less cozy. Lord Bellington, a wealthy land developer, wants to turn the community garden into a housing estate. When Agatha and her friend Sir Charles Fraith attempt to convince Lord Bellington to abandon his plans he scoffs: “Do you think I give a damn about those pesky villagers?” So when Agatha finds his obituary in the newspaper two weeks later, it’s no surprise that some in town are feeling celebratory. The villagers are relieved to learn that Bellington’s son and heir, Damian, has no interest in continuing his father’s devel-
opment plans. But the police are definitely interested in him—as suspect number one. His father’s death, it seems, was no accident. But when Damian hires Agatha to find the real killer, she finds no shortage of suspects. The good news is that a handsome retired detective named Gerald has recently moved to town. Too bad he was seen kissing another newcomer. But when she is also found murdered, Gerald is eager to help Agatha with the case. Dave Matthews By skip sheffield photos by tom craig The devotion of Dave Matthews fans is such he sold out back to back concerts July 29 and 30 for Matthews’ 25th Anniversary 2016 Summer Tour at Perfect Vodka Amphitheater in West Palm Beach. What made the dates even more significant was that Dave is going on hiatus after the current tour. This does not mean he is quitting music, but it does mean there will be no Dave Matthews 2017 summer tour. So fans will have to content themselves
with Matthews’ six studio albums, all of which topped the Billboard charts and have sold more than 30 million copies. Some fans came from far afield in their RVs and campers. South Florida Fairgrounds opened their lots at 2 p.m. each day to accommodate campers. No two Dave Matthews shows are alike, but the West Palm dates included most of the singer-songwriter-guitarist’s greatest hits such as “Crash Into Me,” “Don’t Drink
the Water,” “Cornbread” “Gravedigger” and “Ants Marching.” Born in South Africa 49 years ago, Matthews has spent most of his time in the USA where he currently lives in Seattle with his wife and three children. Matthews is also an actor with more than a half dozen movies to his credit. The Dave Matthews Band is scheduled to play Farm Aid 2016 September 17 in Bristow, Virginia. Matthews may be on hiatus next year and perhaps beyond, but it’s a safe bet that performing live in front of his adoring fans with lure him back onstage again. Gwen Stefani By skip sheffield photos by tom craig Gwen Stefani should have called her 2016 national tour “The Gratitude Tour.” Stefani seemed genuinely overjoyed to be back on stage when she played Perfect Vodka Amphitheater in West Palm Beach.
42 September 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
“You have no idea how grateful I am you are here tonight,” she told her fans. “It’s been seven years. You are just a huge puddle of love.” Stefani turns 47 on October 3rd. Though she has three sons with former Bush front man Gavin Rossdale, she still has a size 4 body and moves like a teenager. The formal title of the tour is “This is What the Truth Feels Like,” named after her 2016 album. Opening was friend and longtime collaborator, female rapper Eve, who was warmed up by an onstage DJ. The concert was a catalog of Stefani’s greatest hits, both as lead singer with No Doubt (1986-2004) and her solo career (2004 to date). Stefani had a crack onstage band with an especially strong lead guitarist and a keyboard man who also doubled on trumpet. The greatest audience response was for her greatest hits, such as her earliest, “Don’t Speak,” “Rich Girl,” “Hollaback” and Grammy Award winners “Hey Baby,” “Underneath it All” and “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” with Eve. Stefani was accompanied by four danc-

ing “Harajuku Girls” and four equally agile male dancers. She founded her own L.A.M.B. clothing line in 2003, and she showed off her designs with four costume changes. Stefani filed for divorce from Rossdale in August 2015, and she had as a comeback single “Used to Love You” in October 2015. She has achieved some notoriety as a coach on “The Voice” and has appeared in several motion pictures, but it seems live performing is her first love. “I feel your energy every day,” she gushed. “Every single night is different for me. This is not the Internet. This is real.”

Injured in an Auto Accident? A Review of the Most Common Injuries and the Most Effective Treatments
{
By Dr. John Conde
There are several variables that contribute to the likelihood of being involved in an auto accident which include the speed of the vehicle, design of the vehicle, road design, skill of the operator, and whether the operator was impaired while driving.
The most common injuries sustained in an auto accident include strain/sprains of the neck (whiplash) or of the lower back, herniated discs, contusions (bruises), abrasions (scratches), lacerations (tearing of the skin), knee injuries, and rotator cuff injuries. The most ominous injuries include traumatic brain injuries, fractures, and internal organ disruption. The neck and the lower back are the most vulnerable and susceptible regions in the body for injury in an auto accident. In regards to the neck, whiplash is the most common occurrence. It is impossible to prevent the neck from snapping forward and backward during impact. This action creates micro-tears in the ligaments and tendons that hold the neck on top of the body. Subsequently, secondary to the forceof the impact the rubber like material between the vertebrae called the intervertebral disc can tear. The intervertebral disc is made up of an outer, resilient layer called the annulus fibrosus and an inner gelatin-like substance called the nucleus which is an irritant to nerves. Upon tearing, the nucleus can herniate out of the disc and irritate spinal nerves producing neck or lower back pain and pain into the arm or leg. The impact experienced in an automobile accident may also have more ominous results such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Physical and cognitive symptoms may result such as headache, nausea, dizziness, problems concentrating, difficulty with short term memory, spasticity, weakness in the limbs, and gait difficulties. The brain can shift forward and backward in in the skull in response to the violent forces put on the body producing a brain contusion which is termed a coup-contrecoup injury. Another
44 September 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
brain injury occurs when the brain shifts excessively in the skull shearing the neurons on the outer surface of the brain. A comprehensive examination must be conducted after the accident to detect the extent of neurological and orthopedic compromise. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment should be conducted immediately with a goal of reducing inflammation and restoring function. The current gold standard for soft tissue injuries such as strains and sprains and even intervertebral disc injuries is Class IV High Power Laser Therapy. This FDA approved, orthopedic tool enhances tissue healing by tenfold. The gold standard for the rehabilitation of disc herniations is a procedure termed nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy. This process significantly reduces intra-discal pressure and promotes retraction of the herniation into the disc and facilitates influx of oxygen, proline and other substrates. The most recent trial sought to correlate clinical success with
MRI evidence of disc repair in the annulus, nucleus, facet joint and foramina as a result of treatment and found that reduction of disc herniation ranged between 10% and 90% depending on the number of sessions performed, while annulus patching and healing was evident in all cases. Lastly, neurophysiologic rehabilitation must be conducted to treat the under functioning brain regions. The gold standard for TBI and MTBI rehabilitation is the Dynavision D2 which is used across the world in major rehabilitation hospitals and in many collegiate and professional athletic programs. It works on visuomotor-spatial skills as well as on a neurological process termed “efferent copy” which integrates two very important regions of the brain; the cerebellum and the frontal lobe. Medical Microneedling
{
By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
Having hundreds of needles in your face sounds a little unappealing, right? Microneedling (rolling of a wheel covered in microscopic needles to create tiny skin punctures) is the latest and greatest dermatologic procedure for no downtime skin rejuvenation.
The hugely popular procedure in Europe and Asia has been booming in the USA as well. Actually, it’s not as threatening as it sounds. Microneedling is a quick, safe and effective way to refresh the face, neck or hands. Using a device called “SkinPen”, microneedling can be performed in as little as twenty minutes. SkinPen is a medical grade, state-ofthe-art microneedling device designed to reverse years of sun damage, improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation as well as enhance the
overall appearance of aging skin. SkinPen allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process by creating thousands of precise micro-injuries in the dermis, automatically triggering new collagen synthesis without causing scar tissue formation. It’s called Collagen Induction Therapy. Collagen Induction Therapy, is the procedure by which the body’s natural response to healing is used to increase the amount of extracellular matrix such as collagen or elastin in the skin. These tinsy “injuries” are enough to initiate the wound-healing
cascade. Multiply it by the hundreds of tiny channels created by the SkinPen devise and presto, thousands of new collagen and elastin fibers are produced – successfully providing excellent skin rejuvenation results with little or no downtime. Your skin will look and feel healthier! The actual procedure typically takes twenty to thirty minutes depending on the size and number of areas treated and the severity of damage to the skin. Patients typically tolerate microneedling treatment with SkinPen very well; many report little or no discomfort during the procedure, mostly since a numbing cream is applied to the treatment area thirty minutes prior to the procedure. Microneedling treatment is a minimally invasive procedure; however, since the skin is being penetrated there will be some mild visible effects afterwards. These effects will vary based on the needle depth used and the intensity of treatment. Acne scar treatment may produce slightly more side effects due to deeper treatment levels required. Typically even the most aggressive treatments only have a day or two of mild swelling and redness. However, compared to laser ablasion or deep chemical peels, the downtime is insignificant. Microneedling is a quick, safe and effective way to generate new collagen without using thermal energy or having any risk for scaring. It is the most natural and organic dermatologic method to revitalize skin. Dr. Thomas C. Balshi 4665 W. Atlantic Ave 561-272-6000 southflderm.com www.balshimd.com

Let’s be wise about wisdom teeth
{
BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA
You can wait for a possible problem, or have them removed as a precaution.
Dentists are committed to helping their patients keep their teeth for a lifetime. At times, however, an extraction is deemed the best course of treatment. Some people are born without wisdom teeth, some people have enough space in their mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth, but some people end up getting their wisdom teeth removed as a precaution. Then there are the majority of people who wait until they’re in pain before seeing their dentist. There are several factors that dentists take into account before recommending treatment, and all depend on the severity of the case.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are often impacted, meaning that they’re not able to fully erupt through the gum line due to limited space. If you’ve had braces or Invisalign prior to your wisdom teeth coming in, this could ruin your straight teeth by pushing your bottom and top rows of teeth forward, causing overcrowding, crooked teeth and bite problems (and additional future work to re-straighten). Overcrowding can ruin a healthy smile because teeth that are too close together can become breeding grounds for plaque and bacteria. Crooked and crowded teeth are more difficult to clean when you brush and floss your teeth, allowing trapped food to remain in place. Built-up bacteria might not be removed until you have a professional cleaning, allowing plenty of time for tartar to form, increasing the chances of tooth decay and gum disease. Gum Disease or Tooth Decay Wisdom teeth are some of the most difficult teeth to clean, simply because of their location in the back of your mouth, making
48 September 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
it more complicated to reach with your toothbrush and floss. They’re also difficult to clean if they don’t actually erupt through the gum line, and their suspended state can lead to gingivitis, or the beginning phase of gum disease. Gingivitis is a swelling of the gums caused by the buildup of plaque around the gum line. Without proper care and maintenance, your gums will eventually recede, you may lose bone density in your jaw, and your teeth might need to be extracted. Gum disease can spread and lead to tooth decay and increase the potential need for extractions. Infected Wisdom Teeth If your wisdom teeth are impacted, they could irritate the surrounding gums and cause painful cysts. These cysts need to be treated by your dentist as they can hollow out your jaw and damage nerves. Due to the high possibility of infection, irritation and pain, many people choose to get their wisdom teeth removed before any of these problems arise.
Pain More mature wisdom teeth could grow near the nerve in the jaw and be difficult to remove, not to mention more painful. They can also cause headaches or migraines, in addition to jaw or facial pain, and make it harder for you to chew. Studies show that wisdom teeth will cause complications over your lifetime, and although they may not be causing symptoms that you feel or aware of, there could be issues going on under the surface that are problematic. If you’re not sure about the status of your wisdom teeth, or just want more information, make an appointment to see your general dentist and oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Getting your wisdom teeth removed is a personal decision and your dentist will take a look at your X-rays and work with you to ensure a happy, healthy smile. Back to School, Back to YOU!
{
By Ashley Sica
Summer has come to a close and now it’s back to the school year grind. Summer is a time for loose schedules… aka missed workouts, family vacations…lots of extra calories and kids to entertain. No time to yourself!
Although fun and exciting, all these summer activities can reek havoc on the body and make getting back on track that much harder. There is no better time than now to make your fitness regime part of that “grind.” Here are a few tips to get back on track, feeling good and beat those summer blues. The first and most important component of getting back on track is to have a “fitness” plan and to set a goal for yourself. Setting a fitness plan could be as simple as saying you’re going to get to the gym 3x per week. Make sure it’s at a time that will not be interrupted and a time that will work for you. Next up is to set a small goal. Having a “specific” goal will allow you to focus on training and give you extra motivation to exercise. It’s a lot easier to make it to the finish line if you have an attainable goal in sight. Whatever this goal may be, write it down and put it somewhere where you will be reminded of it everyday. Committing your goal to paper and seeing the written words are more powerful than just having a thought or talking about it. Next order of business would be for you to get your eating in check! I highly recommend keeping a daily food log of exactly everything that you are consuming…the good the bad and the ugly! This will help you easily pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. Make sure to get in the proper mix of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and of course lots of veggies. Skip anything that is processed and stick to all homemade prepared meals (yes, with preparation and thought…you can do it!) The other nutrition component is water! Your body can not properly burn fat if it is
50 September 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
dehydrated. It’s such a simple thing many people don’t do. Aim for 1oz of water per pound of bodyweight. Drinking proper amounts of water will also help to keep you feeling full, flush out toxins and help debloat you faster than you may realize. So get out that gallon and start your chuggin! The last step to help you get back on track is to find an accountability partner. Surely you can find someone…a friend, the neighbor, your dog (just kidding!) who is looking to get in shape or even just live a healthier lifestyle. An accountability partner will help keep you on track and honest. I see greater fitness retention when friends pair up. Think about it….you’re much less likely to
skip your workout if someone is meeting you and it gives you someone to call when you’re ready to throw in the towel. If you follow these three principles it should help you get back on track in no time! My last piece of advice, don’t do the old…”I’ll start on Monday!” There is no better time to start than now! Come up with a plan, set a goal, clean up your eating, grab a friend and get moving! You’ll be glad you did. Sandra Bonfiglio McNiven had a dream of opening a luxury day spa. Though she is a family law attorney she felt a need for something that would calm the stormy waters of her profession. “I fight all day and deal with extremely emotional issues. For ten years I really wanted to open a spa.”
Her dream finally came to fruition when she opened Massage Heights Delray Place eight months ago. “My job was so stressful that I found going to a spa regularly helped me relax, clear my head and reduce my stress level. I used to joke with everyone and say, ‘I am going to open a day spa someday.’” Eventually Bonfiglio McNiven made her dream a reality. She wanted to help others experience the mental and physical wellness of a luxury day spa with skilled massage therapists and estheticians. The upscale 2,500-square-feet spa is just that. It’s luxurious and beckons one to slow down and hop on one of their customized tables for a treatment and a respite from the chaos of real life. The tables have breast plates for comfort, are wider, have a table warmer and go up and down hydraulically. The candles and soothing music leave one with a euphoric feeling that makes it hard to remember what you were upset about 10 minutes before entering. The real element of surprise – and revelation – is that Massage Heights has a motto that seems antithetical to our times. They are client-centric, friendly and want to make sure everyone feels embraced. “Our goal is to touch as many lives as we can and give them a better quality of life. There are so many health benefits of a massage and it’s affordable so people can come on a regular basis.” There are massages and facials accompanied by star treatment from their team. The retreat director (Tara Pearl) has a goal to make everyone feel like a guest, not a customer. They also have a staff of well trained and licensed massage therapists says Therapist Director Michelle Lindenau.

After multiple surgeries left me with an uneven gait, my hips, back and legs hurt terribly. Michelle was compassionate, professional and listened. She knew exactly what to do to make me feel comfortable. The ladies up front were the same. Five stars from start to finish!” That’s exactly why Bonfiglio McNiven makes sure only the most qualified people work at Massage Heights Delray Place. “Our goal is to give back and help others avoid going through life with aches and pains physically, emotionally and spiritually.” Called a Spa Retreat they give custom facials and massages to help sooth or heal whatever the client needs. “My goal was to put together a team of people who care for others.” This philosophy is what permeates the premises. “We have dual services that can be done in the same room. You can get a facial and massage with a complimentary aromatherapy or a couples’ massage,” said Retreat Director, Pearl. There are also face elevations including skin enriching, skin purifying, and skin refining which the estheticians will recommend appropriately per each clients individual needs. “I had a one hour massage from Frank and it was the best massage I ever had! significant other with a new dress, step out on Atlantic Avenue in style, or if you want to add just the right accessory or heels to spice up one of your outfits. Blings & Things is the place to shop to find an accessory or clothing that can’t be found at a big chain retail store. In fact, their items can’t be found in a mall or any other store on Atlantic Avenue. Blings & Things is truly a store concept where clientele are able to find any kind of valuable and quality accessories for their everyday life. They specialize in women’s accessories and clothing, but also carry merchandise for men and children; and they have accessible price points. Some of the rare items include: jewelry, clothing, shoes, handbags, clutches,
luggage, sunglasses, watches, tiaras, phone cases, stuffed animals, pillows, wallets, hair accessories, cosmetic cases, men’s watches and much more! “When our customers come in for the first time, they don’t have time to see everything,” said Maryse. That’s what keeps shoppers addicted to the store and keeps them coming back each week. Maryse and her husband Tristan Bavaria decided to open the boutique store in April after moving to South Florida from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Maryse has a background in the health and beauty industry and is a fashion stylist who helps clients dress for any occasion. Tristan has a background in marketing, web and video
design, sales management and interior design. The couple, who were both also TV hosts, have merged their talents to design the entire store with a modern and posh look complete with black and white chandeliers, upbeat music, and TVs to entertain shoppers. They even went one step further by purchasing merchandise from around the world to provide customers with the best in quality and a unique shopping experience. Their clothing and jewelry lines come from Miami, New York, LA, Canada, Europe and Asia. The store offers only quality products from specialty designers including Nicole Lee from Hollywood, California; and Chelsea Gunn from Jupiter. The owners wanted to stock these distinctive items in the store to match the look of the Delray Beach scene. “Delray Beach has a great diversity of different stores, fashion, art and restaurants with a mix of tourists and locals, and that is what drew us to this location,” said the owner, who moved the boutique from Fort Lauderdale. The ambience and message of the boutique is to treat yourself and someone special to a gift or accessory that no one else has. “Many of our customers come to the store for gifts for their friends or themselves. We have a mix of eclectic items and something for any style. With Blings & Things, the consumer has acquired the ability to buy jewelry outside the contexts of usual purchases, such as weddings, first communions, Bat Mitzvahs or birthdays, and buy jewelry just as a gift to oneself,” added Maryse. The staff at Blings & Things creates a welcoming and fun shopping experience. All the accessories and jewelry are displayed on table trays for the customers to look, touch and feel. Clients don’t have to be intimidated by asking a salesperson to open a glass cabinet that is locked. 95% of their merchandise is displayed for the customer to have an easy access to try it. It’s like an open buffet of jewelry and accessories! Pets are also welcome and the owners encourage their customers to bring their furry friends shopping. Giving back to a good cause is also a major part of their business. The Blings & Pink collection offers a display of jewelry engraved with the pink ribbon to raise money for breast cancer research. Ten years ago, Tristan’s mother passed away after a battle of 8 years against breast cancer. When customers buy this collection of jewelry, 10% of the sales are donated to local charities that

special feature ║ BEACHCOMBER ART
Fresh From The Sea
BEACHCOMBER ART By diane feen
The reason is quite simple – Debbie Brookes is at the helm. Brookes is the silent genius in the crowd of creative artists that elevate seas shells to their rightful place. She knows how to take an ordinary object and make it glisten with varying sea shells that have a luminescent quality. But it’s not just the sea faring message that is so mesmerizing. It’s that Brookes has a knack – and the knowhow – to take a lamp or box and make it a study in contrast. Her mirrors are adorned with driftwood and sea glass (that she tumbles in a cement mixer) or embellished with chamber nautilus shells, jumbo sea shells and coral. For a lighter take on the subject of domestic furnishings Brookes creates Mother of Pearl handbags and lamps with Mother of Pearl and sea shell bases. There is no end to her creative juice flow. It’s just part and parcel of her years of varying creative endeavors. “In my career as a hairdresser, florist and artist I learned that it’s all about balance. There’s such a thing as positive and negative space and balancing the right colors. It’s about taking things away and leaving others behind.”

There are gift shops and home furnishing stores along the South Florida coast, but none have the sparkling brilliance that Beachcomber Art has.
Though Brookes occasionally goes away, or leaves the shop in the hands of others who care about her crafty flair, it is Brookes whose creative footprint is all over the place. Watching her work her magic is sheer genius. She knows what shells to use and how to balance the colors, shapes and style of each earth laden treasure. They hang from the rafters and are displayed on walls, shelves and tables that make up this bright luminescent retail store. One popular item – you won’t see anywhere else – is an urn to keep the ashes of your loved one. There are even companion urns for those who want to comingle in the afterlife. “I had a customer who had five Yorkies and she said they all used to play together and liked each other. So she bought a companion urn and put all their ashes together in one box.” Another customer bought a wooden urn with chamber nautilus and spiny murex shell with Giga clam shell top. It turns out the urn was for the ashes of her beloved horse. And the best part according, to Brookes, is that you can keep the urns in your house or condo as décor. “I had a customer who kept her husband’s ashes in the living room and she spoke

to him every day. You don’t know grandma Moses is in the box, it just looks like a decorative piece.” Brookes also makes custom urns. On occasion someone will send her the seashells of their loved ones to become the decoration on the box that holds their ashes. All you have to do is ask Brookes to create something special for you and it gets done pretty quickly. “I make a new item every day,” she says. There are also wooden medicine cabinets and shadow boxes that make perfect décor for a wall or a bathroom, but can also be used to cover an electrical panel. Beautiful mirrors are everywhere in all shapes and sizes adorned with colorful tiles shells, iridescent abalone shells and other eclectic pieces from nature’s ebb. The shop also has extraordinary seashell chandeliers, tables, candlestick holders, vases, bird cages, candle boxes and large shell adorned fish. Brookes takes special orders and has been known to embellish a surf board or two. “People bring things to my shop all the time to decorate and embellish. I do shell adorned

Christmas trees, cremation urns and boxes, medicine cabinets, electrical box covers and mailboxes.” Her talent – and the store - is so extraordinary that people are constantly telling her how much they adore its one-of-a-kind wizardry. “People always say, ‘You’re my favorite store on the Avenue, we love it here.’ Some come here year after year when they’re in Florida,” said Brookes, who has been married to Ed for 40 years. It’s easy to see how diehard fans can obsess over the creative flair that stares them in the face from all angles at Beachcomber Art Delray Beach. Though Sea Shells are the mainstay of her creative prowess, Brookes has a clothing boutique as well. There are lacey knit tunic tops with sheer intrigue, comfy wide legged pants with knit waist, flouncy dresses and hats to fit any head or occasion. The colors are subtle and neutral, but the styling is upbeat and elegant, casual and cool. She also has a collection of jewelry by Chris Bales in sterling silver and semi-precious stones. Like Brookes sensibility, the jewelry is colorful and decorative with an artistic bent that resembles fine art. A trip to Beachcomber Art Delray Beach is a trip to an unending series of artistic wonders. The color, the freshness and the creative spirit make it a beauty to behold. Brilliance On Hand
DIAMONDS EAST INTERNATIONAL By diane feen
Not only do they have the largest selection of beautiful diamond wedding rings and engagement rings, but they will help you find one with the “wow” factor you demand. Diamonds by nature have a sparkle element that dazzles the eye, but you need to make sure you’re buying a good diamond. That’s where the owners of Diamonds East come in first place. “We have a lot of young people coming here for wedding rings and engagement rings and we make sure we educate our customers with the four C’s – Color, Clar-

Luxury knows no bounds, which is why the owners of Diamonds East International continue to offer the most luxurious diamonds and prestigious watches the market has to offer.
ity, Cut and Carat Weight. We also make sure they are comfortable and have fun shopping here,” said Liz, who presides over some of the most dazzling of classy and classic diamond rings in South Florida. The diamonds sold at Diamonds East are all certified by GIA and EGL and range from small diamond rings to very large ones. Let’s just say if you want to impress your neighbors (or your nemesis) with a very large wedding ring Diamonds East will make that happen. But it’s not just size that matters – its quality.
“We have people coming to shop here from New York, Miami and all over the US because we have the best selection of diamond rings, pre-owned and new luxury watches for men and women. We treat our customers well and our prices are below what most stores sell them for. We also stand behind all of our merchandise,” said owner Ken Mordechai. And their unique selection of diamonds and watches all have one thing in common - rare beauty. From an elegant diamond ring with brilliant halo mounting to a Rolex Submariner or Audemars Piquet watch, the jewelry at Diamonds East is unsurpassed. They also have meaningful pieces like the classic Cartier “Love Bracelet” in gold or diamonds. Their selection of beautiful diamond rings varies in size and dimension, but
they’re all equally as impressive. Some are round with brilliant center cut stones and a diamond halo, while others are pear shaped d’encrusted diamond settings with a split shank and halo (that weighs in at 6.99 karats). Diamonds – like all things of beauty – change with preference and time. Fifteen years ago the “Radiant Cut” (with triangular side stones) and “Princess Cut” (with round cut diamonds set into the ring band) were the most popular. Now the most sought after is the “Halo Mounting”. But that’s not to say that you can’t have the diamond shape of your dreams. “We have many different diamonds styles and mountings. We can show you the shapes and sizes of different diamond rings, but if you want something different we can change the mounting while you wait. We do all our own mounting on the premises so you can get the ring you love right away. We make it fun, it’s laid back here,” said Liz. Diamonds East also sees a rise in the demand for “Push Gifts,” which is a gift a husband gives to his wife after giving birth. For this auspicious occasion diamond earrings, necklaces or bracelets are the preference. Also popular are bride and groom gift giving right before the wedding ceremony. Wedding gifts tend to be luxury watches for men and are often purchased from Diamonds East because of their diverse selection of collectable antique, stunning designer watches from Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Piaget, Brietling, Jaeger LeCoultre, Panerai, and Chopard. Some are sporty others are elegant, but one thing for sure they’re all prestigious time keepers. According to Mordechai, the Wedding Gift is an important part of the wedding ritual today. “You can look at a marriage just like you would a Rolex, it’s timeless.” Part of this timeless elegance is that all their watchmakers are CW-21 certified and the retro or antique watches from estate
sales are often one-of-a-kind or rare finds. That’s only part of the Diamonds East story. They will repair your watch or jewelry, and you can trade yours in for something new that fits your current state of mind or lifestyle. “People often get tired of their jewelry or watches and want to trade them for something new. It might even be worth more over time,” said Mordechai. Mordechai is adamant that customers always get a good deal when buying at Diamonds East. “Most of our business is from word of mouth and referrals. The reason is that no one beats our prices. You’ll never hear a bad word about our customer service or our prices. We cater to our clients and assist them with all of their needs.” And it doesn’t have to be a large ring or top tier watch. “It doesn’t matter what your budget is, every customer is treated like royalty here,” said Mordechai, who added that diamond rings can range in price from $1,300 to six figures.
They also know how intimidating it can be to buy an engagement ring. That’s why they educate clients on everything they need to know about each diamond and each setting. Diamonds East is one of the largest jewelry wholesalers (and Estate Buyers) in South Florida. That explains why their selection of elegant time pieces and diamond engagement and wedding rings are the most coveted and precious. Come celebrate your love and partnership with a new diamond ring that will say what words cannot easily convey. And if you want to sell or buy a premium designer watch, Diamonds East is the only place to go. Diamonds East International 4251 N. THE SALT SUITE Breathing Easy

complimentary salt products available
Elliot and Jessica Helmer found this out serendipitously. A good friend of theirs in LA had allergies that plagued her relentlessly so she went to a Salt Room for relief of her symptoms. The results were amazing and the Helmer’s took note of this grand solution to an age old problem. That’s when they had their aha moment. “Jessica and I wanted to start a business that would help people and have a positive impact on their lives. We saw the demand for something like The Salt Suite in Florida because allergies and asthma are so prevalent.” They were right. According to the CDC over 25 million people have asthma and the numbers are increasing. The Helmer’s found this out first hand. Their havens of salt sniffers – at Salt Suite – have been so satisfied that they just opened a second location in Lake Worth.

There’s a lot to be said about the value of salt. Though restaurants prefer pepper to spike the flavor of their food, salt has an equally illustrious pedigree.
kids enjoy playing in the salt while receiving the treatment
Their first location – on Federal Highway and Lindell Boulevard – is so busy they’re adding another room for guests who prefer to re-
lax and breathe easy amidst 24,000 pounds of dry salt from the Dead Sea. And it really works. The microscopic particles of dry salt penetrate the room - and your respiratory system - alleviating congestion in your sinuses and pulmonary tract. The quiet serene room with its Zen countenance works miracles for those who enter. When asked how she liked the Salt Suite Nancy Nolan just stood there with a euphoric look on her face muttering Ahhh. “I feel so phenomenally relaxed it doesn’t get any better than this. I am coming back again for sure.” Carol, a Salt Suite devotee, has been coming for three years. The businesswoman had sinus problems most of her life but found astounding relief by sitting in the Salt Suite for double sessions. According to Elliot the salt creates a negative ion environment similar to that of the ocean.
just put your feet up and breathe easy
“The anti-inflammatory benefits of salt flush out bacteria and allergy triggers from the body. Our salt is less than one micron and is able to reach the lower respiratory system and bronchial area.” Even Boca Raton pediatrician Dr. Aaron Kaweblum has seen stellar results with Salt Suite patients. “I had a two-year-old patient with severe persistent asthma who was on strong asthma medications. After going to Salt Suite for a few weeks I was able to stop most of his medication – he is doing better than ever.” Salt Suite manager Jessie Henderson’s son John also had serious respiratory problems. After sitting in the children’s Salt Suite room for a few months his symptoms abated and he was able to stop most of his medication. Because of these miraculous results with children there is a clear glass room in front solely for children equipped with toys and a large screen TV. Over 30 percent of their clients are children who come with their parents to play amidst the microscopic dry salty floor and walls. The concept of salt’s healing property is not a new one. There have been salt rooms in Europe for years and its history dates back to the 1800’s when a health official in Poland realized that salt mine workers rarely got colds, lung disease or respiratory ailments. If you ask the Helner’s about the benefits of Salt Therapy they will tell you it can help skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. It also reduces bronchial inflammation, improves lung function, reduces triggers for respiratory illnesses and strengthens the immune system. It’s also heaven on earth for stress relief. You get to sit on a comfy soft recliner and listen to a meditative tape with music (or breathing instruction) on headphones. You also have the luxury of tuning out the noise and nonsense of the world for a 45-minutes session or an hour and a half double session. But that’s only one part of this amazing journey toward health and wellness. “I had asthma and bronchial spasms for many years and used two different inhalers. After going to the Salt Suite for two weeks twice a week I have not used my inhalers. I used to cough all the time and now I don’t. I feel great and have more energy – It’s been a miracle for me,” said client Lorrain. These salt induced miracles are helping so many people that the Helmer’s offer a monthly rate that allows you to come as often as you like (with an appointment). The first session is half price and all you have to do is show up, don a pair of socks and walk onto an oasis of salt induced euphoria. The Helmer’s are looking to franchise more Salt Suites (they’re in Palm Beach Gardens and Ft. Lauderdale) contact them if you are interested.

Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament By Leon Roberts
{
Blessed with excellent weather and “only” 4 -6 foot seas’ on Saturday August 13th, the Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament was held for the 22nd time.
There were 38 boats entered in this year’s tournament with over 200 participants enjoying the 2 day event. The Captain’s Meeting was held at one of Delray’s great local spots The Hurricane Bar and Lounge (640 East Atlantic Avenue). The Captain’s Meeting was a huge success and Paul’s Hurricane Bar offered a great atmosphere for all to enjoy. With so many participating this year, food and drink was a must and generously donated from 3 of the best eateries in town. Henry and gang over at Delray’s Pizza Rustica filled us with deliciously large hot pizza-pies. While Pedro at Anthony’s Coal Fired offered up their famous chicken wings and giant meatballs. Adding to the goodies, Challo at Jimmy Johns Subs made a mound of their fresh sandwiches. Along with food, a tasty libation is a must and what better beverage then an ice-cold IPA brew cooked up at our famous local Saltwater Brewery out on West Atlantic Ave. During the 2 day event many raffles prizes and fishing goodies were won. Most donated by our fantastic supporters and sponsors. A few of the items included a custom Beach Cruiser donated from Albert at Richwagen’s Bike & Sport, a high-grade set of binoculars from Delray Camera, and our annual set of custom Adirondack chairs painted by a wonderful local artist, Tina Black. That’s not all, a 3 day/2 night stay at the best beach spot in town, Wright By the Sea, and an electric green 6 seater street legal Golf Cart rental for the weekend donated by Cindy and Family at Exhilaride Rentals. Plus, a lot of fishing gear donated by TJ from Ray’s offshore tackle shop and we can’t forget Tuppen’s Marine & Tackle that each

some gesture, we certainly appreciate it. ..! The tournament was started by Mark Gerretson as the original Delray Beach Jaycees Fishing Tournament to raise money for the Delray Beach Kids and Cops program, among other worthy causes. Mark ran the tournament for 11 years before he passed in 2005. At that time his friends and family made a promise to keep the tournament going and to continue to raise money for a variety of charities that support the kids and families directly in our Delray Beach Community. The tournament has raised well over $150,000 for charities over the years and has provided many children and families with help and hope during tough times. Current committee members: Noel Bourque, (President), Patricia Gerretson, (Marks mom), Tim Knapp, Jen Buce, Gary (Falcon) Musial, Paul Shersty, Deena Chapman, Chris Reich, Jim Gerretson, and Britta-

A list of the charities that the tournament supported in 2015 can be found on our website. We are excited about the opportunities that this gives us to help the Delray Beach community and look forward to next year’s tournament. “Growing up in this town and seeing all the changes to “lil old Delray” and how this event still brings out the local community year after year is truly a heartwarming feeling” Bourque adds. Noel invites you to check out the charity’s website and Facebook page and to please patronize the sponsors on the site and in the tournament’s official booklet. Claudia Willis’ 1996 purchase of a historic home in the Delray Beach’s Historic Marina District was meant to be.
“Fate definitely had a hand in it,” says Willis, who was already living in the district and bought the house as an investment property. The purchase of what she now refers to as one of her babies – “because I put my heart into it” – almost didn’t happen, she recalls. Willis had seen a sign go up in front of the 1939 home and rushed to make an offer only to learn that someone else had made an offer at the full asking price earlier that day. Willis asked the owner to let her know if that deal fell through and sure enough, 10 days later, the potential buyer withdrew her offer. “I really wanted that house,” Willis said of the home she bought at 42 Palm Square, just a half block south of East Atlantic Avenue. “It had been taken care of so well.” What made it so attractive to Willis was
that much of its original charm had been untouched. The home still has a working fireplace and Dade County pine floors in perfect condition. There are wooden ceilings throughout and walls made of cypress. “It was in perfect condition,” she said. Now 10 years later, the house continues to be well taken care of by Willis, who two years ago took advantage of two tax-related incentive programs – to make major renovations to the property. Those tax breaks would not have been possible had if the house had not been in the Marina District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 and remains the only district in Delray Beach with the federal designation. The area, south of Atlantic Avenue and just

west of the Intracoastal Waterway, is also recognized as a historic district by the city of Delray Beach. Willis says she spent more than $200,000 renovating the historic house, knocking out a wall separating a small kitchen from a dining room which had earlier been a screenedin porch. The improvements opened up the space to make the area more functional and comfortable.Willis also made changes to the roof as part of the renovations. Through a program offered by the city of Delray Beach and Palm Beach County, called the Tax Abatement Program for Historic Properties, Willis is able to avoid paying property taxes on the value of improvements for 10 years. In other words, when the house is assessed, tax appraisers will wait a decade before recognizing the increased value due to improvements. The property tax benefit is also passed on to any new owner should the house be sold before the 10-year period expires. And, because the house is in a National Historic District and is income property, Willis was eligible for a $40,000 tax deduction through the Federal Tax Credit for Rehabilitating Historic Properties, which offers a 20
Before and After. Renovations included removing a wall to join the kitchen and dining area
percent deduction for qualifying expenses. “Many people fear that there are too many restrictions on historic properties but I see only the benefits,” said Willis, who also owns a third historic home in the Marina Historic District. “It’s not as restrictive as people think.” One other incentive offered by the city of Delray Beach to owners of historic homes is the ability to obtain variances from city regulations. “City leaders want to save the property so they’re willing to grant variances to make it more livable,” says Willis, who is currently on a city-sponsored task force looking into the
possibility of adding additional incentives to encourage owners of older buildings to seek historic designations, thus helping to preserve them. That effort is supported by the Delray Beach Preservation Trust, which works to preserve and restore buildings of historic value within the city. Like other members of the Delray Beach Preservation Trust, Willis is a strong believer in preserving properties, which she believes are an integral part of Delray Beach’s character. “If and when I sell a historic home, I’m
looking for someone to adopt them, not buy them,” she said. About the Delray Beach Preservation Trust The mission of the Delray Beach Preservation Trust is to identify, preserve, restore and enhance all buildings and sites deemed to be intrinsic to the history and architecture of Delray Beach. The organization strives, through education, to foster an understanding and appreciation of the cultural, social and economic benefits of historic preservation. It provides grants and assists owners in applying for grants for restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures.

The Florida Festival and Events Association held its annual convention and awards luncheon last month and Jarrod White, Events Manager of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC) walked away with its most prestigious statewide award.
White has been planning and executing events for Delray Beach for the last 5 years. The Florida Festivals and Events Association, Inc. (FFEA) represents 3,500 events throughout the state of Florida and recognizes those companies and individuals who excel in the field of events. While the DBMC as a whole walked out with 5 of the coveted awards, White was presented the last and most distinguished award of Emerging Leader. “This was a genuine shock. A big thanks goes to my DBMC team for nominating me and going along with some of my crazy ideas. Also to the city of Delray Beach for giving me the platform to be creative and allowing me to push boundaries,” exclaimed White. Jarrod’s dedication to entertaining the city with innovative and safe events can be witnessed all year long. From creatively bringing Santa in to light Delray’s 100ft Christmas Tree at their annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony to managing all the moving parts of the City’s 4th of July celebration which brings out 100,000 people. “I’ve seen him chase down a stolen golf cart

Delray Beach does not stop with events. His love of the arts has driven him to take a personal interest in beautifying the Pineapple Grove Arts District through murals. He is currently working with artist Marcus “Grabster” Borges to have the brick wall on the side of El Camino turned into art this October. The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative continues to push its events to the next level and produce some of the country’s best events, entertaining locals and bringing in people from all over. “The DBMC wins a lot of awards for our events and Jarrod is one of the biggest reasons why we do”’ explains Immelman. For a chance to experience the DBMC’s next award winning event and to see Jarrod White in action come out to Grove Week the first week of October. City Commissioner And People Person
MITCH KATZ { By Diane Feen
Photo by melissa korman
Mitch Katz has a saying that it’s better to act than to talk. That is precisely the reason he ran for Delray Beach City Commissioner in 2015. And he won.
“I never thought I would run for office but there were things that needed to be done in Delray and I wanted to make them happen,” said the Chattanooga, Tennessee native who has lived in South Florida since he was five-years-old. Some of those things have come to fruition. Katz was insistent on more transparency in city government and currently all board meetings (that take place in the city chambers) are streamed on the Internet and recorded for future information. Katz is also proud of the city employee morale boosters put in place. “We have recognition programs such as the Employee of the Month. We also worked hard to negotiate an employee contract for Fire Department employees.” As a way to get to know constituents – and hear their concerns – Katz holds quarterly town hall meetings. He also hosts groups of residents at his “Coffee with Commissioner Katz” meetings where residents of Delray can express their concerns and ask questions about the city. “Sometimes people’s ideas have the potential to turn into policy,” he said. If there’s a theme that runs through this Delray resident’s life – it’s one of public service. He has been an Eagle Scout since he was 17-years-old and has volunteered with the Boy Scouts since he was a teen. Katz served as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster and various volunteer positions for the South Florida (and Gulfstream) Scout Councils that foster leadership. Katz also enjoys speaking to children to boost their morale. Helping others is a lifetime passion that is near and dear to his heart. “I was raised by a single mother (Fran) and older sister (Sindee) and had a lot of mentors growing up. My Big Brother and Scout leaders were mentors to me as well.” If you look at the trajectory of Katz’s life, it seems
September 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
to follow a predictable path. One that is strewn with supporting young people and helping them find their way in the world. It is something that Katz navigated with the help of others and he seems to take pride in paying it forward. He was a chair of the Education Board of Delray Beach for two years, is on the PTA of Banyan Creek Elementary School and is an assistant Scout Master in Delray. Katz is also president of his homeowners association in Bexley Park. Being a people person is one thing that helped Katz start off on the right foot in life. At the age of 15 he sold the Miami Herald after school and also worked in Fort Lauderdale at a department store (called Jason’s) selling menswear. He also volunteered in numerous political campaigns and was a volunteer for Michael Dukakis in Sunrise, Florida. Katz worked closely with Dukakis’s daughter Andrea and found that his passion was identical to those he supported. “I like supporting people who have a true desire to help others. I enjoy helping people.” That seems to be one reason that Chuck Halberg of Stuart & Shelby has a fondness for this local family man. “Mitch is someone not afraid to go against the odds, even when he is told he can’t succeed. He is also passionate about things he feels strongly about. I also really admire his family values.” Katz has been married to Heather for 13 years and has two children, an 11-year-old son Hayden and nine-year-old daughter Shayna. They enjoy attending local Delray events together such as the July 4th celebration, First Night on New Years’ Eve and the Delray Affair. Another thing that Katz feels strongly about is helping teachers get their graduate degrees online. He accomplishes this by working with non-profit
universities across the country as Manager of Education Programs for The Learning House. Katz has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and a Master’s Degree in Leadership from the Ken Blanchard College of Business at Grand Canyon University. He has worked in various admissions management positions in higher education and is dedicated to helping adults achieve
their lifelong education goals. In his spare time Katz has found a new vocation (and avocation) with Dash Travel in downtown Delray Beach. It is there that Katz works his magic with people by helping arrange trips to fulfill their lofty goal (or bucket list) of seeing the world. For this local commissioner seeing the world means keeping Delray Beach in good stead with its residents – and keeping everyone happy.
So far he seems to be on the right track. “Commissioner Katz is fair and thoughtful and brings a valued perspective to the process. As a longtime resident he took it upon himself a few years ago to become actively involved in the community by joining the City Commission. We look forward to working with Commissioner Katz in the future and appreciate his efforts on behalf of the community,” said Marc Yavinsky, Executive Vice President of Menin Development, Inc.

IL CONTADINO RISTORANTE From Farm To Table
By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman
{
When you go to Il Contadino it’s like going to your family’s Italian country house. It’s relaxed, the food is homemade and there’s little pretense in this intimate culinary experience.
That’s the way Michael Menna likes it. He enjoys making guests happy and listens to their heartiest desires - and makes them come true. Of course, this aim to please is mostly geared toward your palate and your plate. But, Menna has been known to chat with those who want to nurse a glass of wine and spend time in the serenity of his Pineapple Grove restaurant. For those who want a special dish, or a family favorite recipe, Menna is ready to whip it up for you. All you have to do is ask (and perhaps give him a little notice). That’s why he only has a few menus on hand. The rest of his culinary offerings are in his head and vary depending on the freshness of the local food available. Like an artist Menna can take different ingredients 88

and make them harmonious and meaningful. Take the Stuffed Mussels for example. As someone who shuns mussels quite often I was delightfully surprised by the presentation and the exquisite taste of the Stuffed Mussels at Il Contadino. Prepared with Italian sausage, fresh mozzarella cheese, bread crumbs, extra virgin Olive Oil and Garlic they were superb. One of Menna’s signature dishes are his homemade meatballs. You can get one with a short rib in the center or order this savory dish as an entrée. The meatballs are tasty without overbearing spices that camouflage the inherent flavor of the meat. If you’re a lover of Osso Buco, you’re in for a treat. This veal dish is braised in a luscious vegetable tomato sauce over homemade spinach fettuccini. It’s also no flash in the pan – it takes Menna all day to prepare this hearty dish. If you like short ribs Menna will make them for you in a tasty homemade vegetable tomato sauce as well. The short ribs are so tender they fall off the bone, yet are so delicious your fork will be there to meet them. Though presentation is of paramount importance to this 40-year foodie veteran, his primary goal is to create comfort food that makes guests feel good. “I like to create scrumptious meals for people who come to my restaurant. I also take pride in the fact veal chops caprese, made with house made mozzarella, fresh basil and local tomatoes

that I offer my customers their favorite dishes cooked to perfection.” He sure does. His customers can attest to his generosity of spirit and perfection in the kitchen. “My husband and I went to Il Contadino for dinner. We had the fresh Mahi Special with broccoli and roasted potatoes and the Insalate de Contadino salad. We also enjoyed the delicious homemade key lime pie. Everything was prepared to perfection and Michael (the owner) served us personally. The restaurant’s atmosphere makes you feel like you are at an intimate restaurant in the heart of Italy. We highly recommend Il Contadino,” said Julie of Boca Raton. Menna has a gift when it comes to preparing terrific homemade meals. As a child his parents worked a lot and often their son would gather food he found in the refrigerator and whip up a special dish. “My parents were hairdressers and they rarely cooked so I would take whatever was in the house and prepare a gourmet meal.” He still has that savvy ability. “As a resident of Delray who eats out a lot I love Il Contadino. The food is excellent and Michael takes great care of us. It’s not noisy, busy or as pretentious as other Delray Restaurants, but it’s my favorite. The service is good, the food is excellent and the ambience is cozy and friendly,” said Gordon. That’s one of the perks of dining at this cozy restaurant in Pineapple Grove. You never know what Menna will cook up. He has been known to create a homemade Bolognese Sauce with fresh ground beef bathed in his grandmother’s secret tomato sauce with pasta. One of his newest creations is a whole Branzino with peppers, Kalamata olives and onions. He’s also serving a rib veal dish with breading, homemade mozzarella cheese and locally grown tomatoes with basil. Another new dish is the Pasta Carbonara. Made with bacon and onions in a
stuffed mussels appetizer
cream sauce this dish will really wow you. When it comes to wines Menna has the globe covered. “I have 1000 different wines from all over the world. I even have a vintage wine from the 20’s. We cater parties and welcome groups (or families) celebrating special occasions – we’ll cook your favorite meal or help you plan the menu.” Il Contadino also serves lunch with dishes such as Italian antipasti, soups, wraps, salads, veal and pasta. If you don’t see what you want on the menu chances are Michael will make it for you. “All of the food I make comes from my heart. Each dish is homemade and I can make any type of food you want, from any country,” said Michael, whose children often help their dad in the kitchen. There are also monthly wine tasting dinners, vegetarian platters, homemade focaccia bread and dessert platters with cannoli, key lime pie, carrot cake and cheesecake. “My mission is to make you feel at home at my restaurant, I am proud of the homemade food we serve and happy with our signature meatball dish. Come and enjoy yourself – we aim to please.” IL Contadino Ristorante 165 NE 2nd Ave Delray Beach (561) 330-0004 Open for lunch and dinner Catering and take-out available

cups of the milk and the corn to a boil. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining milk and the cornmeal. Whisking constantly, slowly add the mixture to the boiling milk. Reduce heat and simmer gently, stirring frequently, for 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in the butter, thyme, salt, pepper, and eggs. Transfer to a buttered casserole or cast-iron skillet. Cauliflower is an often over looked vegetable. But no more! Try these two ways to prepare broccoli’s cousin. Ingredients: 3 cups whole milk 2 cups fresh corn kernels or one 10-ounce package frozen corn, thawed 3/4 cup finely ground cornmeal 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for the dish 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 large eggs, lightly beaten Directions: Heat oven to 350° F. Spicy Whole Roasted Cauliflower
Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 head cauliflower 1½ cups plain Greek yogurt 1 lime, zested and juiced 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon curry powder 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon black pepper Directions: Preheat the oven to 400° and lightly grease a small baking sheet with vegetable oil. Set aside. Trim the base of the cauliflower to remove any green leaves and the woody stem. In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt with the lime zest and juice, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, curry powder, salt and pepper. Dunk the cauliflower into the bowl and use a brush or your hands to smear the marinade evenly over its surface. (Excess marinade can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days and used with meat, fish or other veggies.) Place the cauliflower on the prepared baking sheet and roast until the surface is dry and lightly browned, 30 to 40 minutes. The marinade will make a crust on the surface of the cauliflower. Let the cauliflower cool for 10 minutes before cutting it into.
Mix flour, water, garlic powder, salt and pepper together in a bowl with a whisk until batter is smooth and a bit runny. Add cauliflower to batter and mix until cauliflower is coated. spread onto baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned, 20-25 minutes. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Remove saucepan from heat and stir in hot sauce and honey into butter until smooth. Brush hot sauce mixture over each piece of cauliflower until all mixture is used. Bake until cauliflower is browned, about 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cauliflower cool 10-15 minutes.

Buffalo Cauliflower Add in cooked chicken, shrimp, or steamed broccoli for a complete meal!
Ingredients: Olive Oil cooking spray 3/4 cup baking flour 1 cup water 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste 2 heads of cauliflower, cut into bite size pieces 2 table spoons butter 1/2 cup Franks Red Hot Buffalo Sauce 1 teaspoon honey Directions: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet with cooking spray.
Ingredients: 1 cup of fresh blueberries 1/3 cup Gin 1 pint vanilla ice cream 4 waffle bowls Mint for garnish Directions: In a small saucepan combine blueberries and Gin. Simmer, stirring frequently until berries burst and mixture begins to thicken - about 5-8 minutes; let cool. Divide one pint of ice cream among 4 bowls evenly and top with sauce. Garnish with mint.
Ingredients: 1 lb angel hair spaghetti 4 large garlic cloves, minced 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon dried hot red pepper flakes 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil Finely grated zest from 2 lemons 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Directions: Cook pasta in a 6-quart pot of boiling salted water until al dente. Reserve 1 cup cooking water and drain pasta in a colander. While pasta is boiling, cook garlic and red pepper flakes (to taste) in oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet over moderate heat, stirring, until garlic is golden, about 5 minutes. Stir in zest, then juice, salt, pepper, and 1/2 cup reserved cooking water and bring to a simmer. Toss pasta in sauce with parsley. (Add more cooking water if pasta seems dry.) www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | September 2016

A Natural Life in Every Way... How Do We Achieve?
I
n today’s crazy world, how do we achieve a more natural lifestyle for our pets, our families and ourselves? It seems we are facing the whole alphabet of challenges from Anxiety to Zika. Every day we are confronted with new health challenges from diseases, toxins, environment, pharmaceuticals, drugs or a pollution challenge with no solutions in plain sight. So what are we to do? Many of these challenges are beyond our immediate control. The government is nonresponsive to the concerns of the general population. Large corporations are exempt from the problems that they create. Chemotherapy for instance, was recently reported with statistics from the FDA stating it is only 3% effective in long term effectiveness in treating cancers. You will notice I said “treating”, not CURING. Now, let’s look at this in another light. That is a 97% FAILURE rate and a very costly one at that! Most of the health challenges our pets and ourselves face are because of the toxins and deficiencies provided by our society. These components are all around us including the air we breathe, water, foods, prescription drugs and other medications. What are we to do?
The key to leading a healthier, more natural life is knowledge. If you are reading this, you are on the right path. It starts with several basic paths that are right in front of our eyes. For natural health we need three things, clean air, clean water and clean nutritious food. It is difficult to control our air with all the chemtrails, pesticides, pollutants and toxins in the air today but not impossible. Air purification, from expensive ozone generators to inexpensive sea salt absorbers will help but it’s up to you to NOT contribute more of these toxins to the environment. The same is true with our water. How many pollutants were produced to make those toxic plastic water bottles you purchase to consume water? Is the water quality really better from the bottle than from the tap? Is fluoride more dangerous than BPA? There is a plethora of water conditioning products from mineral additives and filters to complete water modifying systems to reduce our risk. The area we have the most control over is our food. The cleaner, more nutritious and naturally raised foods are, the stronger our immune systems will be to fight, repair and cure the body. Species ap-
propriate diets of clean, nutritious foods for ourselves and our pets are the single most important items to keep us healthy. The diet needs to be as local, fresh chemically and processing free as possible. The diet must be widely varied with macronutrients which are the major food groups as well as micro-nutrients such as herbs, spices and botanicals. By balancing the diets in this manner, the body is able to grow, detoxify and regenerate health at a cellular level making most of the toxic drugs unnecessary. It means the body will heal itself from within and will be able withstand the air and water assaults better. For the sources of these toxins, vote with your dollars. Source your food, healthcare, prevention and all necessities to be local and smart. Find the real experts that can answer your questions with knowledge and wisdom, and then share what you’ve learned. GETTING OLDER By Susan Harris
{
Face it - aching knees, embarrassing trips down the Depends aisle in the grocery store and being unable to read a restaurant menu without a magnifying glass are no fun. Getting older can certainly be an adventure in itself. But, rather than dwell on the downside, how about looking at some of the things that make life better now than it was when you were young?
Here are five advantages of getting older that you may not have thought of before:
You Make Lots of New Friends Just think – you never would have met that guy who makes birdhouses if you had not been sitting with him in the doctor’s office waiting room for an hour. You would never have heard that the lab technician who takes your blood every month has a daughter who is getting her third divorce. And, don’t forget all of the people at the senior citizen center and church suppers. Your horizons have really expanded since you got older. You’re Still a Baby No matter how old you are, there is always someone who, upon learning your age, will say, “Oh, you’re still a baby.” Seek those people out.
You Have Lots of Ready-Made Excuses Everyone expects you to have trouble remembering things and to have lost your hearing - whether you have or not. Selective hearing is probably THE greatest benefit of aging. Maybe you can still hear perfectly, but the older you get, the more you can pretend not to have heard something. Didn’t take the garbage out? Sorry, didn’t hear you ask. Didn’t fix the garage door? Oops, couldn’t hear you. Memory loss is another great excuse. If it’s too late to pretend you didn’t hear something, you can simply say that you forgot. It’s expected that someone of your advanced years will have trouble remem-

bering. You can really play this one up. Try walking around the house muttering, “Where did I leave my keys?” Of course, you know very well where the keys are but no one else knows that you know.
Other People Can Take Care of You For a Change Remember those years of taking care of crying babies, dressing toddler’s wounds, feeding picky children and driving the kids to soccer practice and piano lessons? Now, it’s your turn! Those same kids should now take care of you. They can mow your lawn, paint your house, fix your roof and even bring you food. It’s about time, right?
Sweet Freedom At your age, you have the freedom to do practically anything you want. No one will blame you for anything you do. If you want to wade in the fountain at city square, go for it. Enjoy yourself. What do you have to lose? Feel like flirting with the pool guy? Go ahead. People will smile, roll their eyes, shake their heads and secretly wish you would act your age. They don’t realize that’s exactly what you are doing! It’s time to celebrate your age and all the benefits that go with it. Make the most of your golden years while you still can. It’s now or never.

Five Simple Yoga Stretches for a Public Toilet Stall By Antonia Anderson
{
Date from hell? Stressful business meeting? Lunch with the in-laws? From these and other miseries, the public restroom is the traditional refuge. Why not put your time inside the stall to good use? A spot of yoga relaxes and invigorates, preparing you for the daunting world outside.
Here are five simple yoga stretches you can do in a public toilet stall of any shape or size. Just don’t forget to lock the door.
1. Forward Bend While seated on the toilet, straighten your back and take a deep inhale. Exhale, hinge at the waist and lower your torso onto your thighs. The head comes to rest on the knees and the arms hang down loosely.
2. Neck Rolls Still seated, place hands on thighs and let your head hang with chin tucked. Shoulders are relaxed. Slowly roll the head all the way to the left, then to the right. Remember

not to strain (that goes for any toilet stall activities, yoga-related or not).
3. Side Twist Sit up straight and turn your torso as far to the left as possible without moving your legs. Grasp the back of the toilet tank to increase the stretch (unless hygiene conditions are unfavorable). Take a few deep breaths, than turn to the right and repeat.
4. Upward Stretch This one is done standing. With an inhale, stretch your arms over your head and clasp your hands together. Turn your clasped hands so the palms face the ceiling, and look
up. Hold for a few breaths and release.
5. The Scream Stretch your mouth open as wide as possible. Inhale slowly, and then exhale fast and forcefully. Imagine all tension, anxiety, or boredom being expelled from your lungs. Do this three times…or until you feel ready to face whatever drove you into the toilet stall in the first place. Now you can exit the public toilet feeling refreshed and rejuvenated by these simple yoga stretches. And if that tedious meeting or nerve-racking lunch drags on for another two hours…well, nobody can fault you for taking another bathroom break.
