And Representing The United States In Paris is…

Before the first ball was struck in April’s round-robin matches, we knew we would have a player we would be proud of representing the United States in Paris when the dust settled in Delray. Sportsmanship was as abundant as a new brand of tennis we saw. The 2016 Longines Future Tennis Aces hosted by the City of Delray Beach delivered an aggressive, winning brand of tennis we haven’t seen in the 12’s, at least of this character. Nerves held in the no-ad format when the next point wins a game. And these girls were going for it, not waiting for mistakes. In the end it was Nikki Yanez, Florida’s lone entrant in the elite 8-player event, who stood up to a field of incredible athletes from across the U.S., defeating Katrina Scott (Woodland Hills, CA), 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match at Delray Beach Tennis Center. The Sarasota kid lost the first set of her first match and then reeled off eight straight sets to finish the event with a 4-0 record. So much for being a gracious host. And the scary part for her fellow competitors is that she practices four hours a day…on gymnastics. A latecomer to tennis, Yanez practices her craft on court only one hour a day.

Congratulations to all our players who earned their way to Delray and proved their case with each match. And good luck to Nikki Yanez, United States’ official entry into Longines’ 16-player international event played during the French Open, “Roland Garros” – A once-in-a-lifetime, all expenses paid (travel, accommodations, food for them, plus a parent/guardian) trip to Paris, France from Monday, May 23-Sunday, May 29, 2016.

Volunteer Pilots Recognized for Service to Angel Flight Southeast

Pilots from Miami, Delray Beach and Sebastian will be honored for transporting patients to far-from-home medical appointments.

Sometimes a visit to the doctor can be complicated because of a patient’s inability to travel long distances due to physical or financial challenges. That’s when David continued page 12

Rivero, Brecker and Snell volunteer with Angel Flight Southeast (http://www. angelflightse.org), donating their time, personal aircraft and fuel to fly patients to life-saving medical appointments that otherwise would be too far away or too costly. They are part of a network of 650 pilots who volunteer to make approximately 3,000 missions each year.

The three men were recognized as honorees for the “2015 Pilot of the Year” Award for the South Florida region. They were honored on Friday, April 8, 2016 at the Dr. Franklin G. Norris Pilot Awards Gala for Angel Flight Southeast, at the River Ranch Resort and airport (2RR) in River Ranch, Fla. David Rivero, who joined the Angel Flight Southeast network in 2012, flies a Grumman Tiger out of Tamiami Airport.

He resides in Kendall and was the 2013 Pilot of the Year recipient.

Manfred Brecker, who also flies a Diamond Twin Star is based out of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. He has been flying for Angel Flight Southeast since 2004 and resides in Delray Beach.

Marc Snell, who flies a Piper Seneca1, is based out of Sebastian Municipal Airport.

He has been an Angel Flight Southeast pilot since 2000 and resides in Sebastian.

Some flights require multiple legs and these volunteers play an important role in coordinating the trips with precise timing so their passengers arrive safely and on time,” said Steve Purello, CEO of Angel Flight Southeast which is based in Leesburg, Florida. “Often pilots will fly the same passenger to multiple appointments and they develop close relationships with the patients and their families and friends.

While the pilots often say their reward is the smile or hug from the passengers, we want to recognize each of them for their unselfish dedication to our Angel Flight Southeast passengers.”

HUKA Entertainment announced today a record year for the fourth annual Rock The Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival, held over the weekend at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park. Nearly 90,000 fans flocked to the beach for three days of performances from superstars Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw and Dierks Bentley, along with Sam Hunt, Elle King, Thomas Rhett, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kelsea Ballerini and 25 more musical acts!

What began as country music’s first large-scale festival on the beach, primarily attended by local fans, has grown to become the world’s dominant destination location event, drawing attendees from 47 states and 16 countries to Tortuga.

At 75, the blues/jazz legend is among the most distinctive and influential electric guitarists to arise in the past four decades.

The American jazz, free-funk, and blues guitarist and singer has been influenced largely by Jimi Hendrix. While he started his career playing in funk bands in Pennsylvania and Ohio, he moved to New York and turned his focus to jazz, playing with both Art Blakey and with John Coltrane’s former drummer. In the early 1970s, Ulmer became the first electric guitarist to record and tour extensively with Ornette Coleman, who he credits as a major influence.

This exhibition explores the artistry of traditional Japanese tattoos along with its rich history and influence on modern tattoo practices. Perseverance underscores Japanese tattooing as an art form by acknowledging its roots in ukiyo-e prints and examining current practices and offshoots of Japanese tattooing in the U.S. and Japan. As Japanese tattoos have moved into the mainstream, the artistry and legacy of Japanese tattooing remain both enigmatic and misunderstood.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in May for $50 or less.

American Craft Beer Week is May 16-22 and you are more than welcome to peruse the many restaurants that have beer on tap and find a new favorite. If you want to get the pre-party started, mark your calendars for the Delray Beach Craft Beer Fest. Held Friday, May 13 at the Old School Square Pavilion and Park, you’ll have front row access to unlimited samplings of more than 100 craft brews, international beers and ciders from national, local and home brewers. As if that wasn’t enough,

am literally obsessed with salads. I’ve eaten a salad for breakfast, lunch and dinner before and had no qualms about it. May is National Salad Month and if you’re looking to introduce more leafy greens into your life or get some new ideas for your salad nights at home, you have tons of restaurants downtown for your herbivore pleasure. The southwest chicken salad from Deck 84 is one of my favorite salads on the Avenue. Served with roasted corn, black beans, vine ripe tomatoes, roasted chicken, chipotle lime barbeque glaze, avocado, cheddar-jack cheese, crispy tortilla and a cilantro-buttermilk dressing, it’s just a really delicious and fresh salad for $15. If you’re in the mood for a classic salad, Park Tavern has one of the best Caesar salads on the Avenue. Served with Parmigiano, sourdough croutons, a lemon-anchovy dressing and blackened chicken (my $6 add on), it’s the perfect blend of creaminess, brightness and spice for $9. For a super light salad, head to Senor Burrito. Leave it to me to go a Spanish restaurant and order a fish salad but it’s worth the stares from the flaming fajita goers. The mahi salad is grilled mahi atop romaine, avocado, tomato, feta and blue cheese with their house vinaigrette, which is the key to the salad, for $11.25. y name is Steve Bedner and I’m proud to be a 4th generation farmer and a native of South Florida. My family has been farming in Palm Beach County since 1960. At first it was just my parents, Art and Henrietta and over the years we’ve grown into a family business.

Mostly we grow bell peppers and cucumbers which are primarily distributed on the east coast.

In 2010, our business diversified and we opened the first farmer owned and operated green market in Boynton Beach. Besides shopping, you can take a hay ride around our 80 acres and see what we’re producing. We have a u-pick of strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and sunflowers seasonally. We also harvest a vast array of products daily.

Recently we’ve expanded again, opening another market in Delray Beach. We offer the same delicious home grown and locally grown produce that is tasty, yet affordable, as well as grocery items, wine, and prepared foods. hile performing as a singer on a cruise ship in 1991, I met my soon to be wife, Susan. We were married six months later and decided to make South Florida our home. Soon thereafter, we began our growing family. And although show business is still in my blood, (I continue to perform locally when my schedule allows), I needed to get a “real job”. I began, what became a 22-year career in the automotive industry, from Salesperson to Sales Manager and eventually, General Manager, for luxury brands such as Mercedes Benz and Lexus. During this time, I had the opportunity to get to know the tastes and lifestyles of those folks who call our part of the world, Home. In early 2005, I got the real estate bug where we purchased and sold over $50m of real estate in less than two years. I have made the leap as a full-time realtor and love it! I’m thrilled to be joining the prestigious firm of Posh Properties, in downtown Delray Beach where I will bring my passion for the people, places and homes that make up our little piece of paradise that is South Florida.

The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum Presents Historic Nassau, Bahamas January 18 - May 20, 2016

For younger generations, these images of Nassau may be a new and unfamiliar world view in which they may try to create an understanding of the past. The exhibition explores how the images created by early photographers may have influenced visual representations of the Bahamas even to this day. Spady Cultural Heritage museum is committed to the historical research of our early pioneers, some of which migrated from the Bahamas.

This exhibit allows us to make the connections between our pioneer early lives in the Bahamas and links to the professions, traditions and culture they brought with them to Delray Beach. Several photographers a featured in the exhibit including Jacob Frank Coonley, William Henry Jackson, and O. Pierre Havens. Many of the sites and people in these photographs are still well known and widely identified with the Bahamas today including, The Queen’s staircase, Gregory’s Arch, Parliament buildings and the markets.

The Holocaust Remembered: The Stories That History Missed

They will be exhibiting over 40 images from the Caribbean photo archive collection relating to the Bahamas. These photographs are from the 19th and 20th century.

The images provide a look at what life was like for the inhabitants of Nassau during this era. For older generations the photographs provide a nostalgic look through the streets pictured in the photographs, where they can trace familiar paths they may have walked or visual reminders of people and places

The Holocaust began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany and ended in 1945 when the Nazis were defeated by the Allied powers. Examine in depth, some of the stories that history missed.

May 2 – Learn about little-known stories of resistance to the Nazis and the Holocaust— Did anyone oppose the Nazis? Did the Jews try to fight back?

The therapeutic use of light, photobiomodulation (PBM), has been utilized in Europe for over 40 years and recently gained FDA clearance in the United States in 2002. In essence it is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and nearinfrared) to create therapeutic effects in damaged tissue through the enhanced metabolism of local cells, increased blood flow, and increased immunity.

A laser is any device which can be made to produce or amplify electromagnetic radiation in wavelengths ranging from 180 nm to 1 mm by the process of controlled stimulated emission. Tales About Nails

There is much more residing in our nails than the color we choose or the date of our last manicure. Nails are telltale of wellness and may be the first clue that an underlying disorder is present. Changes in natural color, thickness or shape sometimes point to conditions like anemia, diabetes and heart disease.

Watch for these warning signs often appearing first in fingers and toes.

1. Dark Streaks Many people, especially those with darker skin tones, have harmless vertical bands running from the base to the tip of the nail.

In rare instances, a similar band could signal an aggressive form of skin cancer called Melanoma. The appearance of a new band plus a family history of Melanoma calls for an immediate visit to a dermatologist.

2. White Lines Single or multiple transverse lines called Mees’ Lines occur in the nail plate and move out as the nail grows. These lines can indicate kidney disease or arsenic intoxication. Muehrcke’s Lines are pairs of white lines in the nail’s vascular bed that don’t migrate. Classically they indicate kidney or liver disease.

3. Club Nails Fingernails that have taken on a bilateral swollen appearance (bulb-like) are called Club Nails. Most often, they indicate low oxygen in the blood and possibly an underlying respiratory disorder such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or even lung cancer.

4. Spoon Nails Medically, this condition is known as Koilonychias. Spoon Nails take on the shape of a spoon, that is they are concave enough to hold a drop of water. Most commonly they point to anemia linked to an iron deficiency.

Anemia can result from nutritional deficiency but could also occur from stomach bleeding, gastrointestinal cancers or celiac disease.

5. Splinter-like Lines Trauma, such as slamming a finger in a door, is the most common culprit for the 50 May 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

creation of reddish brown vertical lines in the nails; however they also may indicate a heart infection known as Endocarditis.

6. Yellow or Green Discoloration Changes in nail color may point to a bacterial, fungal or yeast infection. The color will appear in the undersurface of the nail plate and at the edges of the nail. Infectious causes should be cultured and treated to prevent complications. Diabetics are prone to suffer from nail infections.

7. Pitted Nails Nails having small round pits are often seen in patients with Psoriasis, a condition associated with skin plaques. Nail pits are also frequent in Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune hair loss condition. Injections of corticosteroids directly into the nail beds usually resolve this condition.

8. Splitting Nails Ironically, people worry most about splitting, brittle, soft or thin nails, none of which indicate disease or deficiency. These conditions occur after repeatedly having wet hands, which slowly remove natural skin oils present in the nail plate. Brittle nails can also occur from too many harsh manicures or from acrylic nails. Breakage can be prevented with the use of oils and moisturizers or by wearing gloves when performing chores. Biotin, a Vitamin B supplement, is known to strengthen nails, but it might also help to take a vacation from manicures!

While we tend to think of nails just as part of a cosmetic routine, the health of our nails ultimately belongs with the monitoring of our dermatologist.

It would suit us to occasionally peer beneath the polish and make certain the natural colors are in line with overall good health.

Do you have dental restorations?

There are new guidelines for how to care for and maintain your restorations.

There are roughly 120 million Americans who are missing one or more teeth and now have crowns, bridges or veneers. However, only recently have there been established guidelines for proper care and maintenance of these dental restorations.

The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) has created updated clinical practice guidelines that are aimed to keep restored teeth healthy and strong through lifelong athome and professional maintenance. After all, no one wants to have additional work performed on their restorations due to improper care or neglect.

Published in the Journal of Prosthodontics, the new guidelines are actually pretty simple and straightforward. The most significant detail is that they urge dentists to

educate patients on how to best care for their restorations at home. Many patients may believe that because they have a crown, for instance, that they can’t have any decay because the tooth is no longer there. However, the crown is merely a “cap” on your natural tooth, and the natural tooth can still get a cavity or infection.

Patients who have had dental work are encouraged to visit their dentist at least every six months for clinical examinations to clean, adjust, repair or replace their restoration. If followed properly, the guidelines are aimed at protecting patients from doing permanent damage to their remaining teeth and, in turn, helping them maintain their natural teeth for as long as possible.

A summary of the guidelines include: • Get a dental exam and cleaning at least every six months • Follow your dentist’s at-home maintenance recommendations • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride • Floss your teeth at least once a day • Use a mouthwash recommended by your dentist • Wear a night guard regularly if recommended by your dentist to protect your restorations Additionally, it is also very important to your overall health that you do not smoke or chew tobacco and avoid a high-sugar diet.

A recent 17-year study confirms that implant failure rate is roughly 90 percent less in patients who actively participate

in a maintenance dental program as compared to patients who did not. As people live longer, so should their restorations – if cared for properly. The guidelines are in place so patients can hopefully avoid the treatment, expense and process of getting another restoration simply due to the lack of regular professional and at-home maintenance.

Prosthodontists are highly educated dentists who were selected after dental school to become dental specialists. It takes three to four years of advanced residency training beyond traditional dental school to become a prosthodontist, who is a specialist in solving oral health issues such as replacing missing or broken teeth with implants, crowns, bridges or veneers. They are also considered pioneers of digital dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and oral health solutions.

The new guidelines were created by a panel of experts from the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Hygienists Association and the American College of Prosthodontists. Until this point, there have been no clear, evidence-based guidelines that dental professionals can encourage their patients with restorations to follow. The overall goal is to provide preventative dental care strategies in the form of oral hygiene and professional dental care that enhances patient care and overall quality of life.

Stop The Excuses

I often hear people talk about wanting to be fit, healthy and in shape but then its shortly followed by excuses as to why they are not. Not enough time in the day, no motivation, traveling…there will always be obstacles!

Let this be the month where there are NO excuses.

If bikini season and this hot Florida weather isn’t enough to motivate you to get in shape, then find something that will.

Here are some tips to help overcome some of the “excuses” that I commonly hear.

1. “I don’t have enough time” A one-hour workout is 4% of your day!

Not so bad when you look at it in those terms. I find great success in working out early in the morning before my day starts.

It’s one less task that I have to worry about and it feels great to check it off your list.

If early morning workouts aren’t for you, maybe a mid-day workout would be best on your lunch break. Find what time works best for you and stick to it. It’s true when they say, “The only workout you’ll regret is the one that didn’t happen.”

2. “I travel too much” These days little to no equipment is needed for a sufficient workout.

If you’re traveling and the hotel doesn’t have a gym, workout in your hotel room or go for a quick run if it permits. I have written many “hotel” workouts for my clients while they are traveling. If you don’t have a personal trainer to write your workouts get creative and write your own. Think bodyweight exercises- squats, pushups, lunges, dips, etc. Make sure to get your workout in at the beginning of your day to ensure it gets done. As far as nutrition goes when you’re traveling, always pack healthy snacks with you such as fruit, nuts and protein powder. If you will be having an extended stay in a hotel, make sure there is a refrigerator in the room and hit the nearest grocery store to stock up on healthy snacks.

3. “I have no motivation” Motivation comes from within, so dig deep and find it. Grab a friend who has likeminded fitness goals and workout together.

Having someone to hold you accountable is very valuable. Have a dress you’d like to fit into? Hang it somewhere where you’ll see it everyday. Set small goals for yourself that are attainable. Once you reach these goals your motivation level will increase. However, it takes time to see results so be patient and don’t be so quick to throw in the towel.

Give yourself at least 8 weeks to see any noticeable changes.

I challenge you to take the “No Excuse” stand and push yourself. Get up an hour earlier and start your day off with a workout. On your next trip or vacation set a goal of getting sweaty a certain amount of days. Make it a point to eat healthy when traveling. Set a vision for yourself with small attainable goals along the way. Don’t let silly excuses stand in your way of looking and feeling your best.

Both Boca Raton born and bred doctors completed their medical education at the University of Miami School of Medicine. “After years of excelling academically and surviving the brutal winters of the Northeast we both decided to come back to South Florida to be near our families,” said Dr. Nestor.

Both doctors were inducted into the elite Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society and completed their training at the University of Miami Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, one of the nations’ top ten dermatology residency programs.

During their training, Dr. Norton and Dr. Nestor were devoted to medical research.

Dr. Norton spent three years doing graduate research on cancer genetics at Harvard and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, while Dr. Nestor completed a year-long fellowship in a science lab studying wound healing.

As a matter of fact the General Contractor and Real Estate Development Company has made a rather large imprint on the Delray landscape from all sides of the sea. The most notable (in a public sense) is the opening of the new Stuart and Shelby Theatre at the Arts Garage.

That’s just the tip of the community iceberg, so to speak. President and Founder of Stuart & Shelby Chuck Halberg has been notorious in reaching out to non-profit organizations and educational programs to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Those who have been touched by his generosity see Halberg as a saint (in the mortal sense of the word). “The Stuart & Shelby name has become synonymous with reliable support in the non-profit world. Chuck has supported the Achievement Centers for more than a decade and I cannot recall a time when we’ve reached out for help and he didn’t re-

spond with an enthusiastic, ‘I’ll take care of it.’” said Stephanie Seibel CEO of Achievement Centers for Children & Families.

If Karma is something to be celebrated then what goes around has surely come around. Stuart & Shelby recently expanded their office space from 500-square-feet to 1,250-square-feet and are in the midst of expanding their staff. “We get a lot of referrals because of our quality and reputation in the community. We are also getting larger projects such as the Emerald Place, a private development of 31 townhomes, and the Davis Landing West Project consisting of 16 single family homes and eight townhomes for the Land Trust of Palm Beach County. We currently have projects from Hallandale Beach to Lake Worth,” said Halberg, whose name is on the Donor wall at the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce as a presenting sponsor.

Halberg’s partners Bill Neville and Chuck McGovern make up the executive order at Stuart & Shelby. Between them they have over 90 years experience in the construction industry and over 60 years in the development and contracting industry in South Florida.

If reputation is everything then Stuart & Shelby is batting 1000. “Stuart & Shelby is a company that does what it says it’s going to do. I had a home built in Delray Beach and Chuck H & Chuck M gave me exactly what I wanted. They spoke to me in layman’s terms, were good communicators and were beside me throughout the entire process,” said Noel Malave, a retired healthcare executive.

Ernie DeSimone, an attorney from Rhode Island, also found his way to Stuart & Shelby.

And the results are worth touting. “Stuart & Shelby did fabulous work on a condo I bought in Seagate Towers. Their follow-up is terrific and the workmanship is wonderful. I have owned three homes in different states and this is some of the finest work I’ve seen.

They also stand behind their work and Chuck is a wonderful guy.”

Kokie Dinnan feels the same way about Halberg. “Chuck is an amazing guy. He’s been the driving force behind many of our fundraisers. Last year we raised $10,000 from the Woodstock party at the Elks Club. Chuck is on our advisory board and helps with ideas and planning. He’s there for us for anything we need. Family Promise of South Palm Beach County is so blessed to have Chuck Halberg as an integral supporter and partner of our program,” said Dinnan, Executive Director of Family Promise of South Palm Beach County.

Their upcoming fundraiser to benefit Family Promise will be at Putt’n Around on May 14th.

Halberg has also returned to the Arts Garage Board of Directors and is a founding member of The Delray Beach Initiative, devoted to enhancing the lives of local children.

Halberg started in the construction industry in 1975 in Michigan and has been building in South Florida since 1980. He was a Construction Management Executive for three top 200 National Builders before starting Stuart & Shelby in 2006. He excels in product development, budget management, quality control and customer satisfaction.

Partner’s Bill Neville has managed purchasing departments for five of Florida’s top builders and Chuck McGovern has overseen construction in all forms and shapes (including historical renovation) in New Hampshire, Colorado and Florida. The construction team also includes office administrator Patty Eldredge and field staff - Javier Gonzalez, Steve Weiss, Tom Peyton and Brian Young. Chuck’s wife Pam Halberg (of Re/Max Advantage Plus) handles sales of Stuart & Shelby spec homes and marketing strategies.

Together they make a terrific team. Just ask Bill Schroth. “I just built a home in the historic district of Delray Beach and Chuck was in the center of the GC organization. His team worked out terrific. He was involved in all the details, made everything happen and was extremely helpful.”

That is the master plan of this dynamic organization. “This year we very excited to be celebrating out 10th year in business. We have built our reputation with the utmost integrity and pride,” said Halberg.

But when he came to Delray Beach two and a half years ago he knew he had found the perfect home. He also knew that his corporate days were over. “I wanted to be in the salon suite business because I love the concept. It’s a great way to give people a chance to start their own business without the initial capital investment,” said Martell, the owner of My Salon Suite in the heart of Pineapple Grove.

Al also made sure his new security system is state of the art and monitors everyone who enters the premises. A camera is strategically placed next to a key pad at the entrance so tenants can see their clients and allow access at any time. Tenants also have access cards in case they need to enter the building early or later in the day – giving them 24/7 access. There is also free online reservation system for all tenants in the building.

These new changes – combined with the professionalism of this modern space – has allowed My Salon Suite to attract the top Health and Beauty professionals from salons in the surrounding areas. “I am most proud of the community we have built. There’s a synergy between Whitney Smith and Joe Ardagna that is electric.

Both are superstar hair stylists and colorists who are admired for their genius and natural ability to make everyone who crosses their path look beautiful.

Many stay-at-home moms experience severe depression, increased levels of anxiety, mood swings, and other mental health problems. Why?

Raising a child can be one of the most challenging things anyone will ever do.

Babies demand constant attention, young children ask questions incessantly, and teenagers have the power to make even the sanest person believe they’re going crazy.

doesn’t mean they’re not a person. It’s important to take time each day to refresh the mind and body.

Do I Really Need “Me” Time?

Burnout happens when a person continually does the same task for extended

periods of time. A parent might think that they do different activities with their child throughout a given day (eating, playing, bathing, etc.), but caring for a child is one continuous activity. And it’s a job that requires constant attention. People aren’t meant to function that way; parents need to give their brain a few breaks to relax and refresh itself. Some of the other benefits of taking time to relax include: • Greater ability to focus • Lowered stress levels • Increased levels of patience • The ability to sleep better

• Improved mood • More satisfaction with circumstances • Lower levels of depression • Improved relationships with friends, family, and spouse “Me” time is also a great opportunity for partners to bond more with the child. It can help them understand what it’s like to be a caregiver, and they will be more likely to show compassion to the mothers of their children.

But ... I Feel Guilty.

Guilt is common among mothers. They always seem to ask themselves, “What kind of mother wants to be away from their child?” But it’s not that moms want to be away from them; they just need time to be on their own. They need that space to remember who they are and what they do. A child dictates so much of a person’s daily life: when it’s time to wake up, when meals need to be prepared, whether or not a family can go to a movie theater, what kind of recreational activities are allowed.

Remember, you’re not just a mother. You are a whole person with feelings, beliefs, likes, dislikes, opinions, and ideas. The need to express yourself or to do activities that make you happy should not make you feel guilty. You will be a more patient, attentive parent when you take time to love yourself.

What Are Some Ways to Relax?

The main idea is to find a diversion to get your mind off of your daily responsibilities. Your options depend on your personal preferences. It’s important to do the activity on your own or with a friend; having the child in the room with you will defeat its purpose. It sounds selfish, but it will help you be a better parent. Here are a few ideas to get you started: • Read a book or magazine (e.g. Atlantic Ave Magazine) • Take a bath or a nap • Do yoga, meditate, or burn candles/incense • Go for a run or a swim • Give yourself a manicure • Drink a cup of coffee/tea, have a snack, or eat a meal • Sit outside or work in the garden • Go for a drive, to the store, or to a restaurant • Play a game on your phone/computer / do a crossword • Watch a TV show or listen to music • Clean something or get rid of clutter

• Bake or cook • Look through old photo albums • Knit or crochet • Take a class at the local community college • Write a blog, letter, or bucket list The list can go on. As long as you are giving your brain a break from your normal tasks, you are on the right track.

Your Kids Will Thank You You need mental breaks just as much as you need food and sleep. Look at it like the oxygen masks in an airplane. It may

seem selfish to put yours on first before helping your child, but if you pass out trying to help them first, you are hurting the both of you. Help yourself to help your children. Not only are you giving yourself some relief from stress, but you are also setting a good example for your children.

Let them know it’s OK to be a little selfish sometimes, and make sure they know that, by improving their mental health in this way, they can live a much happier life.

A dose of “me” time may be just what the doctor ordered!

“Don’t Just Give Up, Do Something!”

Dear Friend, I could tell you story after story.

In my office, I see people who’ve refused to give up. They didn’t accept the answers they’ve gotten before. They didn’t accept “there’s nothing we can do,” or “there’s actually nothing wrong with you.”

Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon also experience the greatest yearly temperature fluctuations of anywhere in the world. During the peak of the summer, daytime temperatures can reach well above eighty-six degrees. The winter is truly formidable, however. Not only is the place almost entirely dark throughout the day; temperatures hover around -49°F. This is so cold that exposed skin will be subjected to frostbite within minutes and a hot cup of coffee thrown into the air will turn to snow

before it hits the ground. As if that’s not chilly enough, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Verkhoyansk is -93°F.

Dallol, Ethiopia

The Hottest Place on Earth If you prefer something a little warmer on your next trip abroad, how about the remote ghost town of Dallol, Ethiopia? While the highest temperature record on Earth

belongs to Death Valley in California, Dallol holds the record for the highest average temperature throughout the year. This is 95°F with highs of up to 113°F. Dallol was once a potash mining town, although it is now abandoned. The remaining buildings are mostly built from salt bricks and the town is scattered by rusting heaps of metal. The only visitors today are the occasional camel caravans coming to collect salt.

Dallol is very near the world’s most bizarre volcano, a place where the landscape is truly otherworldly. Highly acidic geysers, sulphur deposits, salt pillars and acid pools cover the area. The unusual chemical makeup and geology of the place leads to an incredibly strange rugged landscape coloured many shades of red, yellow and orange.

Unfortunately, only the truly adventurous will ever make it to Dallol due to its remoteness and the political instability of the region.

The Dead Sea, Jordan

One of the Saltiest Lake on Earth

The Dead Sea is the fourth saltiest body of water and the deepest salt lake in the world. About nine times saltier than the ocean, the Dead Sea gets its name because the extreme salinity makes it inhospitable to almost all marine life. The only life in the lake comprises a few forms of algae and possibly some extremophile bacterium.

The Dead Sea is actually quite a popular holiday destination and one of the most visited regions in Jordan. It is well known for its health benefits thanks to the rich cocktail of minerals of the water. The region also boasts some beautiful landscape.

Be aware, however, that the place is very

hot, with average spring temperatures hovering around 86°F and summer temperatures above 104°F. Another thing that the Dead Sea is well known for is the fact that it is almost impossible to sink, at least if you lie on your back.

People can float effortlessly on the surface due to the extreme salinity. The area is home to many resorts and spa towns offering a wide variety of things to do. The most popular beach is the Amman Beach.

The Atacama Desert

The Driest Place on Earth

ited, although there are a number of nitrate mining towns which have now been abandoned. With many deposits of various valuable materials, the region was once an important economic area. There are around 170 settlements, most only consisting of no more than half a dozen buildings. All of these towns are now abandoned.

Due to the lack of cloud cover, light pollution and the altitude of the Atacama Desert, the place is ideal for astronomical observatories. The two major ones are La Silla and the famous Paranal observatory, home of the Very Large Telescope.

The Largest Salt Flat on Earth

The Atacama Desert is a six-hundred mile long stretch of land near the Pacific coast of Chile and Peru. The region is often compared to the surface Mars, since it is completely barren, dry and almost devoid of life. Some of the weather monitoring stations in the desert have never reported a single drop of rain during their existence and it is even speculated that the region has not had any significant rain shower for around 450 years.

Salar de Uyuni is an enormous salt flat formed from a prehistoric lake. It is the largest salt flat in the world, occupying an area of more than four-thousand square miles in Bolivia. It is also the flattest area in the world. Beneath several metres of the salty crust of the surface is a lake comprised of brine. In this otherworldly lake is an enormous amount of lithium, accounting for up to seventy percent of all of the lithium reserves on Earth.

There are some islands in the salt flat, including Isla Incahuasi, where various cacti and other plant life grow. The region is quite popular with tourists and fairly easily accessible on a three or four day tour.

Tours will typically take people around the whole region and include accommodation and food. There are even hotels in the area made entirely made from salt!

Listening to Steve Hynes speak about his new position as Director of Emergency Management in Delray Beach is quite an enlightening experience.

There’s no talk about Delray Beach gentrification or small talk about the pros and cons of adding theaters or restaurants. The reason is because of the magnitude of Hynes’s job and the ramifications of its implementation. “You don’t just prepare for a hurricane, you prepare for any emergency – but you have to plan,” said the 20-year veteran of law enforcement.

Unlike planning for a birthday party or vacation, Hynes’ goal is to get citizens (and business owners) to make a plan for something more life-threatening like a hurricane, tornado, cybercrime, terrorist attack or nuclear explosion. Though it sounds rather morbid Hynes just wants to make sure we’re all taken care of if (or when) disaster strikes.

His new position (the first of its kind in the city) has made him adamant about reaching people before disaster strikes. “My job is to implement citywide strategies in Preparedness, Planning, Mitigation, Response and Recovery. We need these planning strategies to get things back to normal after any catastrophe. Our concern is about life safety, incident stabilization, property conservation and evidence preservation.”

There are times when conversing with this dedicated law enforcement officer (who was born on Memorial Day) that you begin to think you’re in a planning meeting for a doomsday movie at Paramount. But then he snaps you back into clear headedness by his sincere devotion to his career. “I always wanted to serve my country. I was born Irish Catholic in Queens, New York.

I have a strong work ethic.”

He sure does. He’s been a Patrol Officer, Detective, Training Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant, Police Diver and Terrorist Response Expert. Hynes’ expertise is so finely honed that he’s been on state and regional emergency management teams deployed to disaster areas in other communities.

When it comes to his home turf (Delray) Hynes has reached out to the Chamber of Commerce, businesses, churches and schools. But it’s not something he can do

himself. “We always have potential for some form of incident to go on in our city. I’m trying to get the community aware that they need to start planning for all hazards. Since September 15th we’ve had a hurricane warning (Erika), King Tide Floods on Marine Way, and a Tornado on Homewood Blvd and Lake Ida.” It’s not that Hynes is a buzz kill or doomsday prophet. “I’m trying to take care of the city and plan for things like a plane crash, civil unrest or a flood. The last time we had a storm surge flood was 1912, what would business owners do today if there was suddenly three feet of water on Atlantic Avenue?”

Good question; and one that rattles around in Hynes’ brain quite often (we assume). That’s why he’s asking everyone to go to http://floridagetaplan.com to create a plan for their families, businesses and special needs relatives. “You can create a free CodeRed account at http://mydelraybeach.com/codered so the city can communicate with you during a disaster.”

Hynes also wants everyone to have extra food and water, be able to board up windows (or put up hurricane shutters), have an exit strategy and plan family communications. He also talks about the need to have a will, auto insurance, homeowners insurance and flood coverage. “FEMA will no longer cover homes that should have had flood insurance if you live in a flood zone.”

To know Hynes is to know that he takes his job seriously and is accomplished in almost everything he does. As proof of his leadership skills and accomplishments there’s a heavy binder that sits on his desk with his awards and certificates of achievement.

But if you ask him about them he gets quiet preferring to talk about the fact that he enjoys the challenge of his new job and that he is very close to his 14-yearold daughter.

Hynes back story (and enthusiasm for law enforcement) makes you feel like you’re in the company of a character out of a Tom Cruise movie. But when asked what action figure he might resemble there is silence

on the other end of the phone. But make no mistake Hynes is as capable as any Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D when it comes to creating calm after an unplanned storm.

That’s why he teaches FEMA and Department of Homeland Security courses in Emergency Management, Terrorism, Chemical, Biological, Nuclear and Explosives Incidents as well as active shooter response.

Hyne’s was in the Marine Corps and graduated from American Military University in West Virginia. He went to the Police Academy in Colorado and become a Patrol Deputy. In

2000 Hynes came to Delray Beach to become a Patrol Officer, but his path instead led him to become the quintessential disaster dude.

“Do the HOA’s have a Community Emergency Response Team and know how to help themselves before, during and after a disaster? Do our businesses and places of worship have proper insurance and an emergency plan? The more prepared you are, the more likely you will be able to quickly recover from a disaster. I’m trying to lead everyone in right direction, but I can’t do it alone.”

After talking to Hynes you get the impres-

sion he is all business. But if you pry gently he will spill some personal details. He works out every day, is an avid surfer and paddle board enthusiast, and enjoys free diving where he experiences serenity and Mother Nature’s divinity 60 to 80 feet below the surface.

Hynes also enjoys cooking, playing guitar, singing, riding his bike and going to the beach.

He is also an early to bed early to rise kind of guy. But make no mistake he probably always has one eye open. Because superheroes are always ready to defend their territory. And Hynes is no different. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | May 2016

This oversized cavernous space has colorful charm, an authentic polished woodwork bar and outdoor seating. Luigi came to the United States nine years ago with family recipes, culinary experience and bravado. His parents owned a restaurant in Naples and when he was 16 he enrolled in a Culinary School in Italy. When he came to the United States he worked his way up to head chef of Tuscan Grille in Ft. Lauderdale and then opened his first Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza on Las Olas Blvd.

Though Luigi’s started on Las Olas Blvd. the Delray Beach location is larger and the menu is larger. There is one thing that is static – and it’s that Luigi continues the Napoli legacy of authenticity when it comes to pizza, especially the Margherita Napoletana Pizza.

That means he uses Caputo “OO” flour, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes from Naples and

the San Marzano region of Italy. He also follows many of the rules of the Verace Pizza Napoletana, an internationally recognized group of authentic Neopolitan-style pizza makers.

Their Margherita Napoletana Pizza is made with Tomato Sauce, Fresh Organic Basil, Fresh Homemade Mozzarella and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. “Did you know this pizza is from the 4th century in Naples. The King of England was on vacation in Italy and he was hungry so they made him the Margherita Napoletana Pizza the recipe has never been changed,” said Luigi, who still adheres to this recipe.

There are other wonderful pizzas on the menu and all are made in one of their special Coal Ovens. Favorites are the Vegetariana (with Mozzarella Cheese, Tomato, Olives, Artichokes, Sweet Peppers, Peperoncini and Fresh Sautéed Mushrooms) and the Truffle Pizza with mozzarella, Romano, French Goat cheese, spinach, sautéed mushrooms and drizzled with White Truffle Oil. Their Margherita Napoletana Pizza is a favorite of many people, especially Delray Police Sergeant Steve Hynes. “Luigi’s Margherita pizza is the only Gold Medal Pizza around and the eggplant Parmigiana is phenomenal.

I also love the sautéed Calamari and Caesar Salad,” said the new Director of Emergency Management for Delray Beach.

Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza Delray also has Wonderful Homemade pastas. Specialties include Rigatoni Bolognese, homemade Cheese (or meat) Tortellini and Meat Lasagna. The Lasagna is made with Ground Beef, Celery, Carrots, Onions, San Marzano Tomatoes, Fresh Ricotta and Mozzarella Cheese.

Other excellent pasta dishes are Rigatoni Carbonara (with Sautéed Onions with Imported Italian Pancetta Apple Wood Smoked Bacon with a Touch of Cream and Egg with Pecorino Romano), Paglia e Fieno, made with Spinach and Egg Fettuccini and then Sautéed with Imported Prosciutto di Parma, Sweet Peas and a Touch of Cream, and their Four Cheese Ravioli with Luigi’s Homemade Marinara Sauce and fresh Basil.

Luigi also serves Fresh Fish of the Day, Homemade Meatballs and Spaghetti (the recipe was his grandmother Anastasia’s), Eggplant or Chicken made either Parmigiana, Francese, Saltimboca, Piccata or Marsala.

Luigi’s Delray also has a great Happy Hour menu. You get a plate of Fresh Homemade Pasta – such as Four Cheese Ravioli with Luigi’s Marinara Sauce, Baked Ziti with Ricotta and Mozzarella, Meatball sliders, Cheesesteak Napoletana Sliders, Italian Sausage with Sweet Peppers and Onions and other dishes for under $9. There are also Happy Hour Salads such as a House Salad, Caesar or Homemade Mozzarella Salad.

They also specialize in chicken wings made with a special savory recipe. The Organic Chicken is marinated with Italian herbs, roasted in the oven and served with Caramelized Onions and Focaccia Bread. They also serve Panini’s with homemade bread and a variety of meats and cheeses.

There are other surprises at this local Italian restaurant - Luigi Fries that are thinly sliced homemade potato chips and Luigi Truffle Fries with Romano Cheese and Truffle Oil. French Toast Casserole with Maple Syrup

This very easy make ahead breakfast casserole is always a crowd pleaser and makes your home smell delicious!

Prepare the day before and bake in the morning!

ingredients (serves 6 to 8)

• 1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces) • 8 large eggs • 2 cups half-and-half • 1 cup milk • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • Dash salt • Praline Topping, recipe follows • Maple syrup

Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture.

Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

Praline Topping: • 1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup • 1 cup packed light brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 cup chopped pecans • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well.

DO WE REALLY KNOW HOW TO PREVENT TOXIC OVERLOAD?

I

am feeding my pets the highest quality species appropriate fresh foods daily and yet they still get sick. I know it can’t be the food, so why are they vomiting and having diarrhea?

How can I prevent this from reoccurring?

All disease has only two causes, deficiency and toxicity. Feeding the highest quality species appropriate fresh food rotational diet will minimize the deficiency aspect that leads us down the toxicity path, however it is important to know where ALL the poisons are coming from.

Let’s look at the pet’s environment. Homes are filled with all kinds of toxins. Furniture, flooring and building materials all contain harmful chemicals such as glue, dyes, synthetic fiber, flame retardant, stain repellants and stabilizers, just to name a few. Studies have shown that the average home has 500 different toxins with many as a result of combining the aforementioned chemicals creating new, untested compounds. Our pets are breathing these fumes daily. Their bodies also absorb these compounds as they lay on the floor and furniture. While the amounts may seem miniscule, they accumulate over the course of our pet’s life and are stored in fat cells throughout the body.

Now let’s look outside the home. Yards are

treated with all kinds of harmful lawn products that are labeled with warnings. Spraying for mosquitoes, chemtrails and pollution from all kinds of sources also add to the toxic load. We don’t see or realize this constant exposure as most is invisible.

Our water is also treated with unnatural additives. Chlorine, fluorides, lead, mercury and hundreds of others along with all the chemicals mentioned above are seeping into our ground water and reservoirs then ingested by our pets.

How about those treats that you give them? Read the ingredient label and ask questions. How many chemicals are in “natural” flavors? What about the actual ingredients? Is the corn and wheat genetically modified or chemically treated? What are these treats preserved with?

Another group of toxins that pets are exposed to is in the form of drugs and treatments. From flea, tick, heartworm and parasite control medications to various grooming products and vaccines. These products all contain health and adverse event warnings.

You can now see why your pet can exhibit signs of illness such as vomiting and diarrhea when they may simply be trying to eliminate those toxins. The greater the expo-

sure to toxins, the more damage that is done to their immune system. The filters of the body, the liver, kidney and lymphatic system work hard to clear the poison. When their system is overwhelmed, the result is failure and more disease.

So how do we prevent toxic overload? Control the use of toxins that we have pointed out to you here. Read the labels, specifically the warning section on ALL products. If it has a warning, find an alternative natural product that is safe. There are many holistic minded health practitioners and pet owners that have found herbal and botanical solutions for both detoxifying and meeting one’s health challenges. Be sure you are feeding a proper diet including their treats and water as well.

There is nothing small about small business month in Delray Beach as May offers up a big lineup of fun and informative events. 93% of Delray businesses have fewer than 30 employees making small businesses a vital part of our community.

All month long we will show our appreciation with events throughout the city, a large number of them taking place at The Chamber of Commerce and Old School Square. The First Date

He Said

So, faithful readers; as promised, we completed our first date. Along the way, I violated every bit of advice I have dispensed over the past year. Here is my account (Think “Summer Lovin’” from Grease).

I picked her up in my rented Yugo and we went to a beach resort. The Valet did not want anything to do with the car and 114 May 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

it stayed there, dejected for the longest time. We sat by the pool and drank from buckets, no less. She looks amazing in a bikini (good call, He). We talked, laughed and had a good time. We even played ping pong and neither of us had game. I felt bad, so I let her return a few softball serves. It was a great time and I think I was as clever and witty as I am humble.

I dropped her off and we made plans for

happy hour and dinner later.

I took a shower and combed my hair and attained my version of presentable.

I picked her up and we went to an upscale restaurant bar in Boca. We walked in and the mean age dropped ten years. I was buoyed by the fact that I was the only man there with all his own hair and teeth and did not have a sweater tied around his neck. She was stunning in a dress and

every man gawked. We talked and chatted as if we were meeting for the first time (our version of role playing) and decided to leave before the conga line started. We moved to a nicer, quiet restaurant in Boca where she happened to know EVERYONE there. Did I get thrown off my game? Hell yes, I did. I stammered my way through dinner and endured the stares of her friends. I’m pretty sure an old world Italian gypsy curse was cast on me.

I took her home and the Yugo was still at 7/8 of a tank.

Yes! I thought it went great. She is pretty, eloquent and engaging and I did my best to maintain eye contact, despite the obvious distractions. I tried to be a good listener and genuinely cared about the things that mattered to her. We did not discuss politics or religion and kept it light. There was a nice, proper kiss at the door. It will be interesting (or not) to read her take.

Soooo...I broke my dating rules. ALL. OF. THEM. But I have (fairly) good reasons why...

Let me explain.

He asks me to a beach resort and offers to pick me up.

(Not our original plan) After doing a good amount of recon and from what he writes, I figured he’s got a nice physique and admittedly, I was curious. All I can say is...WOW. Fit is an understatement. He totally downplayed his level of fitness.

From the moment he took off his shirt, I couldn’t stop grinning (or staring).

Now my guard is slipping, fast. We found lounges and ordered refreshments. Ok, drinks, that came in buckets. We chatted, we laughed a lot, and had a nice time. There was a very quick dip in the pool, and a pathetic game of ping pong.

When we decided it was time to go, he asked me to Happy Hour and dinner, later that day. At this point I had broken almost every First Date rule I have, so I agreed!

He picks me up and off we go to an upscale lively mature restaurant bar. It was Happy Hour and Ladies Night. The perfect storm. The woman to man ratio was 3:1. Women were literally whipping around in their stools and staring at him.

Once again, all I could do was grin. He obviously could have engaged ANY woman there in conversation, but in true gentleman form, his gaze never strayed from my eyes. Then the music started and it became impossible to hear each other, so we decided to change venues for dinner.

This time I got to pick the restaurant, a quiet popular upscale place where I know some of the staff and get treated like a VIP. We had a lovely dinner, good wine, and even better conversation. Despite the occasional “check ins” from my friends, the rest of the night flowed with ease...(I’m sure the wine helped).

It was a very nice day into night date. He is very charming, polite, and handsome. So, why is he single??? Hmmm...I may have to dig a little deeper *wink* He walked me to my door, and I did the classic key fumble to see if he would go in for the kiss...

He did! Phew! A proper, closed lipped kiss. I waited 15 minutes, sent him a text thanking him for a nice evening, and told him I had a lovely time.

That’s all She wrote.
